As Spengler (the columnist) said, Russian leaders including Putin tend to be smart because the dumb ones are dead. And if Putin were president of the US, we would probably have solved the Iranian problem by now.
He didn´t mean to endorse Putin´s nasty methods, but the world is what it is. These people are realistic about their interests and they understand the smart application of power.

Yer, good discussion, but the difference is Gorbi was selected by the KGB thugs (Andropov, Suslov and the Finnish thug) to put lipstick on a pig, as the commenter above said, and protect the KGB interests, which he did, whilist Obi actually believes in the "new socialist man" crap that neither the KGB or Gorbi really wanted. Another difference is that Gorbi got hit with a failed coup when he failed to deliver on his sponsors interests, while Obi will go in a successful election ( I can hope).
