There Is One Lincoln
by Yervand KocharThe mystery of Abraham Lincoln was in his ability to unite opposing fractions of society while maintaining a divisive position. This ability to transcend opposites made him a subject of claim from diametrically opposed entities and worldviews.
Lincoln became an inspiration for Republicans and Democrats, evangelical conservatives and liberal-progressives alike. Even the ever dull Communists and ever angry radical socialists scraped a spark of inspiration from the mounting figure of Lincoln. But after every group had shaped its own statue of Lincoln according to its own manual, we’ve lost the real Lincoln. Lincoln has been turned into a concept and every concept began to be manipulated to fit ideologies and socio-political insecurities. And, as in the case of everything under the sun, the most insecure and the most unrelated ideologies manipulated Lincoln the most and claimed him the strongest.

In reality, there was and there is only one Lincoln. Many politicians have compared and continue comparing themselves to Lincoln without understanding that what transformed that poor tall Midwestern fellow into Abraham Lincoln was not his external attributes or his immediate surrounding.
Today many ‘Lincoln wannabe’ politicians believe that being young and charismatic, going from rags to riches, advocating the rights of oppressed, coming from Springfield, IL or even taking the same train trip to Inauguration is what makes the real Abraham Lincoln.
This is a ‘Victoria’s Secret’ version of Lincoln.
In fact, being shot in the back of the head for uncompromisingly fighting an unpopular war is what makes the real Abraham Lincoln.
It’s quite sad that 150 years after the Civil War, the mindset against which Lincoln fought all his life and by which he was eventually murdered, finalized the process of hijacking his legacy.
Through the ongoing “sissification” and castration of society, we ended up with an image of Lincoln as benign pacifist, kind and loving father who united the nation. We were given a half-portrait of a man and were taught to ignore the fact that before unifying the country, he divided it. He did not unify by his goodness alone, but by a ‘terrible swift sword’. He united by burning down cities, by sacrificing men in thousands and by destroying an entire civilization.
We are sold the image of Lincoln the lawyer, but before becoming a lawyer he was a rail-splitter, a ferocious wrestler who upon his arrival to a new town would challenge the strongest man around and beat him unconscious in front of an amazed crowd.
Let us not forget the toughness of the man.
He was neither a pacifist in his personal life nor in his politics; he was a fighter, a warrior. It is only on the background of this wild Midwestern force that we can outline and appreciate his kindness and goodness. It is also important to remember that it was not only his innate kindness that made him great but also his strong sense of justice.
Justice is a balance of mercy and severity. In this perspective, there is no doubt that Lincoln was a kind man of goodwill. When Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, he claimed that he surrendered to Lincoln’s goodness as much as to Grant’s army. Lincoln’s personal anxieties about the tragic war are legendary and his love for all his fellow Americans, both North and South, are beyond dispute. But in order to get a real picture of a man, we have to acknowledge the other side of his personality. The side that was there to kill and bring justice through punishing war, the strength of conviction that would stop in front of nothing, the ability to sacrifice others and ultimately his own life for an ideal.
This is the image that was erased by the scribes and Pharisees of modern American scholarship who turned Lincoln into an anti-war Marxist hero in order to suit their frightened worldview.
Through the media they paint an image of Lincoln in watercolors and hang it in their plastic exhibition halls. And as they would glorify this new image they could not even imagine that if they had happened to live in the time of Lincoln, they would be the first to eternally ban his image from display.
The mindset that glorifies Lincoln today is the one that crucified him yesterday and will deny and accuse him every time he returns.
But somewhere there in the forgotten attic of our national memory hangs another image of Lincoln. It is an image carved with a nail on a rusted iron, an image that can scare one in a fierce battle. It is an image that his friend saw when he compared Lincoln’s look to an Indian chief entering an enemy camp. It is an image that is so deeply engraved into the Southern psyche that many still cannot forget and forgive it for the destruction he brought upon them and their families. In short, it is an image that we have to come in terms with, otherwise we are doomed to see it through the eyes of those who never really understood the man and never appreciated what the man did.

It is also a fact that Abraham Lincoln did not leave us a mellow, everybody holding hands, unified country after the Civil War.
I remember well my elder West Virginia relatives recalling their late 1800s and early 1900s youth. There were numerous stories of a still bitterly divided people and families from that conflict.

I love asking young liberals who say they “LOVE ABRAHAM LINCOLN” what political party he belonged to. 9 times out of 10 they say “Duh! He freed the slaves! He was a democrat”!……I rest my case.
Brilliant article. It should be required reading.
I’m going to dispute that what he did to the South was anything but a desire to humiliate and destroy an entire nation. Sherman was the devil incarnate.
Brilliant writing Yervand. I heard a “Psychic” on a well known latenight radio show say Obama was Lincoln. Of course, the Media also wants us to believe he’s also FDR, JFK and George Washington too. It speaks volumes about the Collective IQ of the Country that anyone with an IQ of the Moron level could take it seriously.
Bev…hey..you realize that the Dixiecrats became Southern Republicans during the 1980’s? Ever hear of the Southern Strategy?
Thank you for this article. I’ve often wondered what happened to the Lincoln I’d learned about, and whose birthday was nationally celebrated, when I was growing up. He’d been revised and rewritten into a cariacature, and even stripped of his day of honor. Anyone who’s ever wanted to learn what the Democrats were doing at the time of Lincoln will have a hard time finding out. The DNC has seen fit to omit that era from their civil rights history section.
Thank you for your part in helping to release this great man from the murky swamp of revisionist history to which he’s been relegated for far too long.
Poodleskirt, while we’re talking about Civil Rights legacies, riddle me this. Was it a)wise or b)foolish for Reagan to open his 1980 campaign with a speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi on the topic of “states rights”?
I would never say that Reagan was unaware of history, so his choice of THAT theme in THAT city, given the events there in 1964, must have been a pretty calculated attempt to woo the Dixiecrats you rightfully condemn to join his election cause in 1980.
Speaking of tone deaf about the Civil Rights era, it WAS a Republican congressman who referred to the Obamas as “uppity” during the election, no?
You have to admit that the party of Lincoln very nearly had a vice-President whose spouse actually belonged to a SCECESSIONIST PARTY in Alaska is pretty damn hysterical.
What Legacy and Height don’t understand was that Reagan emancipated us from the shackles of government like Lincoln did.
Perhaps, they prefer those irons. After all, we’re about to be put in chains once more by Obama and the Democrats.
Russ -
You are so right about Reagan.
It’s absolutely ludicrous for ANYONE to compare BHO to Lincoln. The only thing they have in common is they’re both men. BHO’s ego gets in the way of him governing like a president. Instead he’s still in campaign mode and believes all the hype Chris Matthews and his comrades are saying about him 24/7. Lincoln wanted to unite our country. He wasn’t intimidated by those who disagreed with him. In the end it cost him his life. This Obamanation’s desire is to divide and conquer and we’ll all end up paying for it one way or the other.
Um, Russ…Reagan actually doubled government spending and left office with a record budget deficit. Hell, he even raised Social Security taxes.
….a ferocious wrestler who upon his arrival to a new town would challenge the strongest man around and beat him unconscious in front of an amazed crowd…..
Wow, so felonious assault is “cool” to you? This is sure telling and a good reason this tyrant should never have been allowed to come close to the WH. He destroyed the Constitution. A truly despicable man.
Bev, the POINT is that when Northern Democrats began to take back their party from the racist Dixiecrats, largely because of Civil Rights legislation, the Republicans seized upon that opportunity by reshaping conservatism to overtly appeal to disaffected Dixiecrats. This was called the Southern Strategy, a political gambit that would directly appeal to the so-called “angry white man” with culture war rhetoric like Reagan’s infamous “welfare queens” talking point. Considering the Civil Rights workers were murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi by proponents of “states rights”, it was fairly remarkable for Reagan to give a pro-states rights speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
Bev, 60’s Southern Dixiecrats are now today’s mainstream Republicans. Sorry, chief, but that’s the reality of your party these days.
Jim- Sherman was a genius. He understood what the war was going to be.
To a friend who joined the Confederacy…
You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.
You mistake, too, the people of the North. They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too. They are not going to let this country be destroyed without a mighty effort to save it …
And even if he was “despicable” he was right.
One more flash of genius
My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.
Sergeant Limp, not knowing what you or I was talking about tells me all I need to know about your IQ. Just sayin.’
“Considering the Civil Rights workers were murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi by proponents of “states rights”, it was fairly remarkable for Reagan to give a pro-states rights speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi.”
They were murdered by racist Democrats who were, at the time, using the idea of ’state’s rights’ as a way to hide their racism–much like they use various euphemisms to this day to hide their racism.
But who can deny the damage they’ve done?
I won’t reiterate, it’s been pointed out, as has the fallacy of the ‘party switch’ in the 60’s.
When ex-klansman David Duke tried to run as a Republican the national and Louisiana Republican parties told Republicans to vote for the Democrat.
Robert Byrd, elected AS a racist, remains in the Senate. The Democrats call their ‘ex’-klansman ‘The Conscience of the Senate’.
Best one-volume book you can read about President Lincoln is Philip Henry Paludan’s The Presiency of Abraham Lincoln, a scholarly study in the University of Kansas’ American Presidency series. It’s an examination of Lincoln’s whole presidency in context of his being a president, instead of looking at him as ABRAHAM LINCOLN the statue, if you catch my drift.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ABE! YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE “MY HERO”! GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL FOREVER.
It is hard to apply the party terms of Democrat or Republican to Abe Lincoln. It is true that he was the first Republican President. That party was not a conservative party at the time and certainly does not mirror the Republican party of today any more than Andrew Jackson reflects 21st century Democratic principles.
Lincoln was a great man of contradictions with a terrific sense of timing. He knew when the time was right to announce the great Proclamation – after a key Union Victory. He also understood mans imperfections.
Lincoln was a great person as well as a President and if were alive this past fall – I bet he would have voted for his fellow from Springfield, IL.
You live in exciting times just has Lincoln did. You could have supported Lincoln or Douglas as the key candidates in 1860. History says Lincoln performed up to the task although at the time newspapers in the north and south questioned his experience and ability. Today we have another exciting, intellectual and composed president in Obama. Hopefully your children and their heirs will cheer your insight to elect and support another transformational figure.
Lucky you – luck we all.
Brilliant.

“It is also a fact that Abraham Lincoln did not leave us a mellow, everybody holding hands, unified country after the Civil War.”
Miko.. yes you are right, but Lincoln was murdered by one of he most famous actors of his time, he never had the chance to finish what would have been a much more ‘mellow’ reconstruction… also we must remember the Democrats were working 24/7 to destroy what Lincoln did along with tripping up the freed slaves at every turn…..did not a Republican President have to make a law banning the KKK from being an arm of the Democratic party?
And most if not every black family had a picture of Lincoln and Jesus in their homes, voted Republican and outside of the Democrats creating segregation, were better off until the 60’s movements came and indoctrinated blacks, enslaving minds to a lie that all their troubles were the rich white Republicans fault… thus enslaving them once more to food stamps and public housing, broken families, all for a vote….the new plantation as I like to call it..
PS: Just a note, do not many of our most famous actors today along with much Democratic support murder Republicans with their tongues everyday. It is a never ending story, of a party ( Republicans) formed to stop slavey, that to this day are demonized by the very rich and very privileged of this country and the world.
My take, once a slave owner always a slave owner… now the Democrats have enslaved a country to big government, illegal taxes and gross immorality.
Thank you for an article I apprecited reading first thing in the morning. But I disagree with your narrow definition that the essence of Lincoln was to be “shot in the back of the head for uncompromisingly fighting an unpopular war.” That would imply that Bush would have been equal to a Lincoln for fighting the illegal Iraq war should that shoe have detonated upon impact.
And Lincoln did compromise and was pragmatic in fighting the war. That’s what made him great; he was not dogmatic. The Union had to be preserved, but as he said, he’d free the slaves to do it, he’d keep them all enslaved if that’s what it took, etc.”
Cliff, are you ignorant, stupid or just trying to be cute? Because in my book you failed at all three and came across as small minded, uninformed and offensive. You should be ashamed of yourself.
I’m sure Obama no more wants to be Lincoln in every way than Lincoln wanted to wear the same shoes as Washington or FDR wanted to emulate Teddy exactly. There are similarities from some presidents to others in certain ways – usually brought on by common challenges/strife. They say Washington founded the country, Lincoln preserved the Union and FDR rescued the nation. Obama may have to step in and restore America’s financial health and middle class and return us to a mantle of global respect and leadership.
He will have the opportunity to transform the country and the way the country views itself and it is seen by other nations. It is not simply replaying the past as in a cheap play. It is of course learning from the past and having the boldness to chart the right direction the new times demand. If Obama succeeds, as we should all hope he does, his presidency will be praise worthy and comparisons to past presidents who shared similar challenges, familiar backgrounds and achieved lasting results will be natural. Our part as vested citizens is to be informed, supportive, challenging and American.
Yervand, great piece about a truly great man. The revisionists will always present black as white, up as down good as bad. It's their nature. Keep swinging the sword of truth.
"… and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Except if your from the south… in which case I'm gonna send my boy Sherman down to f*ck you up.
Hey, what happened to all the older comments?
Cherubkid-
Powerful post. I don't see anybody attempting to debate you.
The bright sunlight of your truth has turned the trolls to stone – cold and silent.
Well done.
Alex Ivy-
Yeah, where's them older comments?
We wuz robbed!
Obama is the new Lincoln? Am I the only person who finds this insulting to Mr Lincolns memory. What has Obama done yet that qualifies this comparison. Organize the community? Everytime I hear someone proclaim BHO to be the greatest President ever I can't help but be reminded of my rabid Chicago Bears fans friends back in 06-07. Back in 06-07 when the Bears made it to the SuperBowl my friends would proclaim how much better this team was than the 1985 Bears (SuperBowl winners). I disagreed with them. They sighted stats (Votes?) and all sorts of other crap to prove their point! My responce was always the same, "Until they win the SuperBowl they are not better". (they didn't) My point is that until Barry does something (Anything would be nice!!!) shouldn't people lay off the comparisons? Abe Lincoln this man is not and he never will be. The modern day equavilant to what Lincoln did would be curing cancer, curing aids, solving world hunger, shutting Al Gore up etc.
A comparison between Abe Lincoln, and the Magnificent Barry “O” that’s funny. The Bambster is simply the far greater man, the many accomplishments, intestinal fortitude, the true grit, a real American. All of the trials of growing up on the dangerous beaches of Waikiki, it’s hard to think about the abject depravity, and continual hardships he must have suffered. Just think of Lincoln emerging from an Hawaiian surf all cut and buff in his spiffy bathing suit, no comparison people. Lets not forget the Messiah’s ability to deliver a speech, he’ll make you almost believe he knows what he’s talking about, and the Greek columns come on there’s no comparison. I think that now that, “He’s” among us we should shred the Gettysburg Address ,disassemble The Lincoln Memorial as there can be only one Lincoln, and that is now the most Magnificent, and Merciful, Barry the Bambster “O” is that man, praise be to Allah!
Great Abe Post! Remarkable post by Cherubkid, I recommend a vist to cherub's website., this person really get's what this country represents….Obama is the new Lincoln and Reagan and FDR, are the OBots insane or gullible.
The only way Nobama even comes close to Abraham Lincoln is in his dreams. Reality is a completely other issue.
Thank you for your uplifting and gritty piece. I loved it and will look forward to more from you.
Lincoln was a tyrant a racist , a warmonger a merchantilist and a front man for the northern industrial interest. He went to war to collect tariffs from the south not to free any slaves. If he wanted to free slaves, a good starting point would have been his generals. He could have pressured Grant to free his slaves but he didn't because it was not an issue with Lincoln. Grant finally freed his slaves in 1868.

food for thought
The amount of emphasis on Lincoln's political party is positively retarded. Republicans and Democrats in 1860 are nothing like the parties today.
Lincoln was arguably a liberal, given his steadfast support of individual rights and human dignity, but god knows I'm walking into a rats' nest by saying that here, where the term 'liberal' DOES NOT REPRESENT ANYTHING GOOD UNDER ANY CONDITIONS, EVER.
Unlucky.
[...] Yervand Kochar: People think Abraham Lincoln was a punkass bitch but he was really like Tupac, yo. [...]
Total nonsense. Lincoln kicked the American Taliban's ass (the Confederacy was the American Taliban).
