Meet the New Batman: An Algerian Muslim Who Saves France from Nazis and Communists
by Warner Todd HustonReality isn’t always very fun. Because of that many people turn to comic books for a little escapism. But there’s escapism and PC indoctrination. Sadly, it appears that DC Comics’ Batman is angling for the latter and not the former. You see, Batman has decided to hire a Muslim to “save France.”
First the reality. The country of France is having serious domestic problems between its immigrant Muslim community and those natural-born, European Frenchmen. Immigrants have been rampaging across the country for several years now. Clashes between police and large groups of rioting Muslim youth have wreaked havoc on the Gallic nation. Violence is all too common — it is woefully common for hundreds of cars to be lit afire in these riots and dozens of arrests to be made. It has the country split and frightened.
It has gotten so bad in France that in some parts of its cities, those parts controlled by marauding gangs of Muslim youths, whites never enter for fear of their lives. Not only that but not even police dare enter these areas. This dangerous situation does not seem anywhere near being solved. In fact, it’s just getting worse.
Now for the fantasy: enter The Batman.
DC Comics recently launched a series called “Batman Incorporated.” Essentially, Bruce Wayne (well-known as Batman’s alter ego to comics fans) is cruising the world setting up a “Batman” for major cities across the globe. These Batman figures, though, will not be vigilantes. They will be sanctioned by whatever local police force is in charge of the area in which the new Batman is operating. In the case of Detective Comics number 12 (Part one) and Batman Annual number 28 (Part two), Bruce Wayne has come to Paris, France to find a “French savior.”
The story reveals to us a cult-like group that is assassinating France’s fringe political figures. The cult’s goal is to cause unrest and riots to be led by the murdered political figure’s followers. This group hypnotizes its members to kill and then to commit suicide so that the cult cannot be discovered.
First a “popular” French union activist “with ties to the French Communist Party” is murdered. Next the leader of a “break-away Neo-Nazi Party” is killed. Then Batman discovers that a “minor diplomat” from Saudi Arabia is targeted. Batman tries to stop the assassination but is too late.
Batman turns to a man that he helped police arrest earlier in part one. When first encountered the young man was dressed in a skin-tight, black costume and sported a face mask. Batman arrested him when this man tried to involve himself in some rioting. Batman didn’t know the young masked man was actually trying to stop the riot but later learns of his good intentions. Consequently the Dark Knight decides to put this man to work to help stop the cult that is assassinating French political figures and causing riots.
In the course of this story Batman, aka Bruce Wayne, decides that this man should become the French representative of Batman Incorporated. As Wayne styles the man, he’ll be the “French savior.” He ends up calling himself Nightrunner.
So what’s wrong with all this? Only that it is completely absurd and so badly misleads people from any understanding of why riots are really going on in France that it almost qualifies as a crime itself.
You see, DC Comics has decided that the “French savior,” the French Batman is to be a Muslim immigrant. The character’s name is Bilal Asselah and he is an Algerian Sunni Muslim and an immigrant that is physically fit and adept at gymnastic sport Parkour. Apparently Batman couldn’t find any actual Frenchman to be the “French savior.”
The whole situation is a misreading of what ails France. The truth is, neither communist Union members nor “Neo-Nazi” Parties are causing riots in France. Muslims are. Yet DC Comics is absurdly making a Muslim immigrant the “French savior”? This is PCism at its worst. Not only that but it is pretty condescending to France, too. France is a proud nation. Yet DC Comics has made a foreigner the “French savior.” This will not sit well with many Frenchmen, for sure. Nor should it.
As DC told the tale of this character’s origin, it badly downplays the seriousness of the actual racial tension in France. In essence, all you get from the story is that “they hate us, and we hate them.” There is no attempt at all to explain the real underlying problem. The true cause of the riots and violence between Frenchmen of European stock and that of immigrant Muslim stock is glossed over as if it doesn’t even exist. DC Comics makes the whole problem as simplistic as mere racism as if that is all there is to it ignoring the fact that Islam is the single most important factor in the strife.
Unfortunately, readers of Batman will not be helped to understand what troubles are really besetting France. In this age when Muslim youths are terrorizing the entire country, heck in this age of international Muslim terrorism assaulting the whole world, Batman’s readers will be confused by what is really going on in the world. Through it all DC makes a Muslim in France a hero when French Muslims are at the center of some of the worst violence in the country’s recent memory.
But it isn’t surprising for DC, a comic book company that has a character whose creator based it on “corporate greed.” Nor is it surprising in an industry where tea party members are made the enemy of super heroes. For the character based on “corporate greed” look up DC’s Larfleeze character and see the Marvel comic Captain America issue 602 where The Captain makes Tea Partiers into an enemy to America (Marvel later apologized). For that matter, check out the words of the director of the new 2011 Captain America movie who said that his Captain America won’t be a big “flag waver.” Imagine that. Captain America not being that into America.
These few examples aren’t the only ones, either. Among many other instances, last April the venerable Archie Comics announced they were adding a gay character and back in 2007 movie makers announced that they intended to remove all mentions of the U.S. military from G.I. Joe (they later relented to a degree).
It all adds up to a PCing of the American comic book industry that has been going on for far too long.

And this is why I don't read comics anymore! What a dopey idea, and now I know why DC canned Frank Miller's Holy Terror Batman!
*Shrugs* The shot at the tea party was over the line, but I don't expect realism (or fact based portrayals of the reasons behind crime and terrorism) from comic books.
Heck, in real life I've never heard of any rich guys that put on battlesuits and beat up criminals or of mass murders who get out of the insane asylum (or prison) every couple weeks.
On a related note, I'd be a little worried about someone who obtained their understanding of world events through comic books.
Epic, epic, epic fail.
Used to be a fan of the Dark Knight. Used to be.
It's a shame DC is taking the mythos that Frank Miller created, and turning it into sewage. Then again, comics, like most other media in the US, are dominated by lefties.
Frank Miller must be mad enough to spit nails. Read this partial transcript from an interview in 2007:
http://hangrightpolitics.com/2007/01/26/frank-mil...
Thought batman was supposed to save the innocent? Not blow them up.
Turns out "The Joker" in the Batman Series is DC Comics itself
Reflective of many artists and creative-types, the comics industry is full of Leftists. This has been true at least since the second generation Baby Boomers started entering Marvel and DC in the 60s and 70s, and today a Leftist bent is practically company policy at both houses. Could at least be a factor, along with rising costs, distribution issues and competing forms of entertainment, as to why comic book sales are in the crapper across the board.
Back in the Golden Age of the 1940s, like Hollywood, American comics wore patriotism on their sleeve. This was also the era of numerous million-plus selling monthly titles – a level of success the comics industry has never enjoyed again in its past 70 years.
Yngblkcons has a valid point. This is, after all, a created universe and not the real one. You can choose to visit it or not. As a retired military NCO who has a BA in Arabic, I recently stopped collecting comics, something I'd been doing since 1974. I will not be visiting that created universe.
Batman a dhimmi??? WTF??? NO WAY… Batman is an American, and a product of our Judeo-Christian heritage, which is apparent because he is not a vigilante. If he was a Muslim, he would have just blown himself up with the Joker. Crazy Crap happening. If a company wants to deal with our enemies (and yes children, Islam is the enemy as clearly as Nazis, Communist, or any MFers that want to kill us), than strike the company where it counts. In the wallet.
To be fair, you missed the point where this new batman goes through pains to make sure hes not seen as fighting for anyone side, muslim or not – the mask even hiding that fact from the public. You can read this comic and choose to see the over bearing PC factor or you can read this comic and see that batman is about taking control of the circumstances life puts you in – in this case being muslim in france.
As far as the failure of the comic to show the true underlying cause of tension in france, one its a comic not a political diatribe. Two, very often the people in those circumstances dont even understand the causes.
better comics than the daily show?
Yeah, I've got nothing against Stewart or Colbert but its kind of bizarre that guys whose shows are essentially extended versions of the old Dennis Miller newscaster skit are viewed as legit journalists.
Come on DC Comics, you are fantastic at fables, sooo..
Move the Maginot Line. I mean it worked so well in WWII. Then through your COMIC talents, rename this mighty fortification TO: The iMaginNo Line.
Case closed, all is well. OH, I would demand a 25% cut for the implementation of my idea. BTW, those checks had better cash, else wise I'll be forced to don my Erwin Rommel outfit.
Frank Millers Batman: hunting and killing terrorists, of course DC wont publish this.
" …..“Holy Terror, Batman!” Miller — arguably the most important comic book artist of the last 30 years — envisioned a story in which the Caped Crusader went on a blood quest against Al Qaeda."
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/07/29/frank-m...
Ahhhh….the myth of the 'good' Moslem.
This is what helped kill "24"…..and will help kill you…..and France ….and the USA….and the world.
It'll be a toss-up whether or not Frank Miller pulls a decent story off. His writing's been going downhill since Sin City so I won't bet on it.
DC has been pretty damn PC since the 90s, but I would say that Marvel has suffered the worst. Read up on Civil War or that anti-Tea Party Cap issue and you'll see what I mean.
Actually, I think this is the best move The Batman franchisers have made since casting Cesar Romero as the campy, pseudogay Joker in the original "Batman" series.
How could Jack Nicholson's or Heath Ledger's depictions of the Joker ever hope to stand up to Romero's over the top, drag queenesque menace? No wonder those two films tanked!!!!
Getting to the point where I'll be dropping DC comics from my list. Even if not for this, they're taking Batman into new directions, and it's just not as fun reading it anymore.
Anything Frank Miller writes I buy, if only to send a message. Aside from that he is an iconic figure who transformed comics into a story telling medium that appeals to adults.
DC Comics has been going downhill for a long time.
I remember some years back when I was reading Green Lantern and WHOA! ARE THOSE TWO GUYS KISSING?
I never bought that Title again.
–FS
DC just finished off the complete move to political correctville with the new Thor film as well. Heres where the libs can label me a racist, but in Norse mythology, there were no black gods, or gods of color, as there now are in the new film.
I stopped collecting most of the main stream titles over 10 years ago. They had rehashed every idea they had multiple times and most were simply repeating past storylines with new artist. DC used to be a little more edgy and independent from Marvels rabid Liberalism and PC universe. I guess today the term "edgy" means you go against the logical and real world realities.
Good column, but "France is a proud nation"? There's no need to embellish to make your point.
Is that a lantern in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?
You know for far too long we have let the Left take over education and pop culture. Even now, many youth get their information from Stewart and Colbert. Now they're going to be getting it from DC Comics.
The point is – enough is enough.
The Left likes to get them young, indoctrinate them and set them upon the world, ignorant and willing to do anyone's bidding.
You can choose to keep the blinders on, but the Truth is out there – indoctrination. We see on this site and all over – repeating the same meme over and over again.
I know, because I was like that in my youth and grew up thinking Reagan was a stupid old dolt based on comedians making fun of him.
Then I grew up.
We don't have time for these youths to grow up. Our Republic is failing NOW. We need the youth to wake up, take the Red Pill and get out of the Matrix. This Batman comic doesn't help.
Hey, I'm just shocked they have someone trying to save France from the communists as well as the Nazis (though I can't help but picturing the Muslim Batman with a suicide belt instead of a utility belt on, and using that to solve the problem with the Nazis and the Commies, but — like Daffy Duck at the end of an old Bugs Bunny cartoon — telling everyone after he's getting all the accolades that he can only do it once).
To bad. I guess I've seen my last Batman movie. Stupid multiculturalists.
Excellent comparison — and conclusion.
Dammit! This wasn't the way it was going in the first issue of "Batman Incorporated." I knew it was too much to ask for a Muslim to be a bad guy.
Oh well … it's more money I'll save. Nothing inspires me to boycott something than outright dhimmitude.
Pop Quiz…
Who was the Joker working for when he killed the 2nd Robin, Jason Todd?
muslims love nazis… why would a muslim fight their favorite ideology outside of islam?
-7/10/10 Sunday Times, UK: Islamic law has been officially adopted in Britain, with Sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.
-1/29/07 Daily Telegraph UK: 40% of Muslims, ages 16 to 24, want Sharia law; 13% admire al-Qaeda; 36% believe apostates should be executed; 75% believe that women should wear veils.
-5/22/07 Reuters: 25% of young American Muslims believe in suicide bombings to fight the West.
-7/27/08 Sunday Times UK: 33% of Muslim students support killing for islam; 33% want world Islamic law.
-2/09 The Finnish Ministry of Defense published a position paper stating: In 1991 there were approximately 300 mosques in Russia; today there are 8,000, financed by Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia.
-1/30/09 Times: In the UK the Muslim population multiplied 10 times faster than the rest of society between 2004 and 2008.
-10/28/10 Daily Mail: In 2009 Mohamed (or variations of that name) was the most popular name for newborn boys in the UK.
How about a comic book character called "Adolf Hitler"? Would you be equivicate about that too?
Why doesn't DC come up with something closer to the truth? How about Mohammed dressed in pink tights with a large codpiece flying around molesting children.
That's Marvel, not DC.
As a fan of Batman, I'm obviously upset about this. As an observer of culture, I'm not at all surprised. The real question is: who are they hoping to draw into their readership? Do they think Muslims will appreciate this and become loyal Batman fans? I guess they might as long as they don't draw Muhammed.
Well, this is the same DC that in the 90s had Green Arrow running around with a bunch of anarchists blowing up firearms manufacturers while trashing the Second Amendment. You know, the guy who's very survival had depended on having access to weapons. But I guess he was just opposed to civilians having firearms when they lack the intense training of a dilettante millionaire shipwrecked on a deserted isle.
Rocoll, the racial make-up of the Norse gods doesn't bother me… hell, I liked Mr.Clarke as Kingpin in the Daredevil movie.. and he wasn't a black character in the comics.
There are certain characters that the color of the skin wont' matter one way or the other.. in this case, some of the Norse gods fall in that category to me.
Yeah, Im just pointing out that the portrayal is not so simple. Sure hes muslim, and sure the subtle nature will be lost on many, as i think it was on the reviewer. We are however talking about a muslim whoes concerned about all people from both sides of the issue (explicitly said in the issue), and as a batman, refuses to use a gun. Obviously this is not your average person of that background, just as someone taking up the batman position is not supposed to be average.
Rather than say this is bad and just stop, I actually hope they do more stories with this charecter. If the story tellers do their job correctly people will see the charecter as the exception, not the rule. Besides, seeing him confront his muslim background now makes him the most interesting possible choice as a charecter to fight terrorists. Theres a fine line here, sure. But as far as story telling goes, there are many many possibilities.
you obviously missed the point. Im not equivicating. Im not saying muslims are peaceful or some such meme. I'm saying that the story while showing he is muslim also showed that he is anything but typical or what you'd expect.
So tell me, did you actually read the comic before you judged it or me? Or did you just hear super hero with a muslim background and go straight into your assumptions?
Ra's Al Ghul
I quit collecting comics when Marvel made The Rawhide Kid a fudge packer. I can't believe DC has gone the Marvel route and became a bunch of pansies.
Sarcasm understood so I gave you an up thumb.
Well they are a proud nation. But I didn't say I was proud OF it!! THEY are proud… and I didn't say it was for a good reason, either! LOL
It's being repositioned as "The Groin Lantern"
I've got you all beat. I stopped collecting comics in the early 70s. It was already getting lefty with the Green Lantern Green Arrow team up.
Hear me out.
While I have no doubt this is not the publisher's intention, this might not be a bad idea.
Who better to appeal to the rioting Muslim youths in France, than a Muslim youth, who says "stop it."?
They certainly aren't listening to the French authorities.
Does anyone remember when Captain America had to save us all from the rrrraaaayyyyccccyyyssstttt Tea Party? That happened only months ago. So now over in the DC camp The Dark Knight has to save the Heathen Mohammedans (and Communists!), who hail from the Dark Continent, from the rrrraaaayyyyccccyyyysssstttt citizens of France. OMG WOW WTF??!! Where is the Marseilles Mafia or the Union Corse when you need them? Once again it's going to take the criminal underworld to save France from itself. I never liked Batman, movies are pretty cool I guess…, but I never liked Batman…Where's the Joker when you need him?
Heck, in real life I've never heard of any rich guys that put on battlesuits and beat up criminals
They may not put on battle suits and fight criminals, but there a lot of rich guys who quietly do a lot of good in the world.
And that's good enough for me. At least they're not making things worse.
Agreed. I miss the days when American super heroes loved America and took out the bad guys.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt3daGeAe9s
Agreed. They can't force us to buy and read them. If we do it's our own personal choice. And we're all entitled to our own personal opinion.
"The story reveals to us a cult-like group that is assassinating France’s fringe political figures. The cult’s goal is to cause unrest and riots to be led by the murdered political figure’s followers. This group hypnotizes its members to kill and then to commit suicide so that the cult cannot be discovered."
AMAZING!
What a great description of ISLAM itself.
And of course it is a TOTAL FANTASY that a MUSLIM would help
deal with the "hypnotized cult members".
Muslims NEVER say ANYTHING against their murdering brothers.
Islam is not our enemy. Radical jihadists are. Muslims have been fighting them since the 600's AD. And jihadists have killed a lot more Muslims than they have Christians or Jews.
That's brilliant. great to know that Frank Miller uses both sides of his brain.
Not with an "innocent", but he did it in the second Micheal Keaton batman movie~
_
Remember at that beginning with all those thugs with bombs strapped on them? They would skate around and throw them everywhere causing havoc. batman beats up one of them, pulls all the pins off the thug and drops him down a sewer hole… he goes Boom! See~ DC remembers that! They're just reliving the jolly '90s again~
I agree. It's a comic. They can write with they want.
If if people don't like it, they're free to produce and sell their own comics.
And if people don't like your new comics, too bad. Freedom of speech baby!
Would you prefer a law that says congress has the authority to prevent a comic book character called Hitler?
Because if congress has that authority, they have the authority to shut down Big Hollywood.
Once the line of freedom of speech has been crossed, the question becomes, who gets to draw that new line. I agree with Thomas Jefferson. Leave it up to the individual.
You should make your sarcasm a little more clear….
And how about all the Muslims who are fighting side by side with American soldiers and Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan?
They're putting (and in many cases losing) their lives on the line ever day in the fight against radical jihadists.
I consider them our ally, not our enemy.
You owe me a new keyboard…..LMAO
You say it's not a political diatribe, but that is precisely what it is. DC didn't have to address the real political/religious problems facing France, if not the world. They could have confined themselves to the fictional world of Gotham City. But they have chosen to wade into the quagmire of real world politics, and as such, have made utterly ridiculous assertions as to the causes therein — with intention. They didn't just toss off a misinformed comment at the water cooler: they chose to redirect an extremely valuable, iconic hero in this clearly PC direction, just as they did with the Tea Party slam. That suggests they learned nothing from that arrogant move. The DC editors are clearly out of touch with America. I hope they are out of touch with their readers too.
If they had chosen a Muslim Frenchman, but also had chosen to characterize the civil unrest using its actual causes? Perhaps the BH story would be different, but they did not. They intentionally misrepresented the reasons for the rioting in France and that opened the door for DC to choose a stand-in for Batman who is from the same strata as the rioters themselves. It was very intentional. You argue as if it were some naive choice. Far from it.
You have a point, but consider this:
Do muslim youths read comic books? If that answer is no (which I believe) then who is reading them? Right, non-muslim youths. And the narrative they're ingesting is that the muslims are trying to stop the rioting instead of the truth, which is that they are the ones starting them.
Also, consider this:
If non-muslim youths are being fed the wrong information, and they don't see the truth that it's the muslims starting this trouble, who will they blame?
Well said, and you got to the point much better and faster than I was, thank you.
On that note, for those of you who are seeing a liberal boogie man everytime you enter the comic book shop a few suggestions on conservative titles…
Bomb Queen – possibly the most vulgar comic ever, but it is about a "villian" who fights overbearing government and sticks it to barack obama on a frequent basis
Secret Warriors – Super spy and former leader of shield takes a bunch of super powered people who never took up costumes, and people who fought in or were trained by those who foughtin WWII, and ignores federal restrictions so he can fight a terrorist organization on his own terms.
uncanny x-force – a team of one time or current x-men admit that sometimes you have to take off the kid gloves and go after a genocidal bad guy proactively insteaad of constantly reacting to his plots
Superman – I shouldn't have to explain this one, but while the writing can be heavy handed at times, the current walk across america story line is no less than a love letter to the nation.
EdSki, I often agree with you, but your reasoning here is severely flawed.
To whit, this site is about reclaiming the culture. It is about pointing out the areas where culture has been lost to the Left, and critiquing the whys and wherefores. This site isn't about stopping Freedom of Speech, but it isn't run by some naive college junior who thinks anything should be said just because it can be said. This site is a conservative/libertarian site about politics in entertainment media. As such, no one is saying that DC CAN'T ruin a comic book icon and spew left-wing nonsense. The point is that they SHOULDN'T, and about examining why they shouldn't.
Sorry I was less than clear. I wasn't taking a shot at the wealthy, I was just saying that Batman, his menagerie of enemies and the world they inhabit is so different than anything in the real world that I don't think it makes sense to look to comics for explanations of real world problems.
Well said, you're starting to turn me into an "L" word…..
Like these Iraqis?
http://www.paratrooper.net/commo/Topic270797.aspx
I understand what you're saying, but I wonder how many of those Iraqis that were smacking Saddam's statue with their shoes are now planting IEDs for the bad guys….
"The whole situation is a misreading of what ails France. The truth is, neither communist Union members nor “Neo-Nazi” Parties are causing riots in France. Muslims are."
No.
I must say, I couldn't care less about comic books in general, but the responses here are what has really inflamed me. To read so many comments, even from regular posters, that say "It's just a comic book," or "Hey, we can't be thought police."
You just don't get it! It's one of many canaries in a coal mine.
If even comic books — which are still read by a lot of kids and impressionable students who are regularly bombarded by the same nonsense worldview in schools & colleges — spew this ridiculous leftist spin, is it any wonder why a site like Big Hollywood has to exist!? Of course DC has the right to publish such a stupid, naive notion about the state of the world, but this site is about reclaiming the culture. It is about pointing out the areas where culture has been lost to the Left, and critiquing the whys and wherefores. This site isn't about stopping Freedom of Speech, but it isn't run by some naive college junior who thinks anything should be said just because it can be said.
This site is a conservative/libertarian site about politics in entertainment. As such, no one is saying that DC CAN'T ruin a comic book icon and spew left-wing nonsense. The point is that they SHOULDN'T, and about examining why they shouldn't. And on the macro level, it's another brick in the foundation of liberalism that has to be fought and called out. It isn't just a comic book any more than Mein Kampf was just a memoir or Triumph of the Will was just a movie or Obama is just another politician. It's just a book. It's just a movie. He's just another leftist politician. We can't abdicate any territory any more with a libertarian shrug of the shoulders.
Ideas matter and bad ones have to be repudiated. And that's what this article is attempting to do.
I don't read DC, or Marvel..independents are far better to pick and choose from. even better is writing your own
"The whole situation is a misreading of what ails France. The truth is, neither communist Union members nor “Neo-Nazi” Parties are causing riots in France. Nor should it."
Was the guy born in France? If so, he is not a Muslim immigrant, but a French Muslim – this is what the French call "droit du sol" and I seem to remember the USA has something like that, too. Also, France being the only Western country without a national super-hero (French comics have little interest in heroism of any kind) the locals might actually end thanking DC for finally giving them one.
sounds like youve got a good idea there, get out your ink and go to town on it!
Well made points, conceded.
I'm not so sure Muslim youths in France aren't reading comic books. Or Muslim youths anywhere aren't reading them. Kids like comic books.
And for the ones that are, this sounds like a great way to reach them. Even if it's not the publisher's intention.
DC…PC
Not a whole lot of difference.
Unfortunately, Islamic religion and government are inseparable, and increasingly, it's the radicals in charge defining belief for the rest. I understand that Sufis are fairly laid back and Islam in Indonesia is still relatively tolerant although the Saudis are exporting their Wahhabist clerics there, too.
Where law is concerned, everyone should be an "L." When it comes to social issues, feel free to pick your poison just don't start crying "there oughtta be a law …"
French youth – especially those living in the suburbs, not all of which are Muslims – favor Japanese comics over American ones – not only France has no superhero of its own, but it doesn't care much for those from other countries. So I'm afraid Nightrunner doesn't make much of a splash there.
I like the /sarc tag myself when humor gets as dry as yours.
I don't know the answer to that either, but this exchange on an islamic web forum might shed some light….
http://www.turntoislam.com/forum/showthread.php?t...
One person named "tariq2005" provides an answer, and if that is what muslim kids are being taught then I'd have to say that no, they do not read comic books.
How about Spider Man?
How can you get more pro American than having a crush on the girl next door named Mary Jane?
"Islam is not our enemy. Radical jihadists are. Muslims have been fighting them since the 600's AD. And jihadists have killed a lot more Muslims than they have Christians or Jews."
+ 1
To be honest I've never been one to call for more laws, maybe I'm already an "L" word….
I didn't have a problem with the idea until the unreality got injected. I could go with the idea of a Muslim Batman; I could even swallow the idea of him being a Sunni Muslim. However, French muslims are neither allowed to assimilate by current French culture nor do they want to assimilate. A muslim Batman would be hated by his fellow muslim if he were to speak out against the religion of pieces. That kind of storyline, one where a brave muslim voice speaks out against all hatreds, including the hatreds of his own religious brothers, in an effort to save them in the end would be edgy and interesting. The comic wouldn;t even have to be dominated by storylines featuring evil muslims for it to work either; I think there are plenty of corrupt interests in the Euro social democracies for any Batman to fight including the corrupt interests of radical Islam.
Maybe if he shot apple pies out of his wrists instead of webs…..
Whenever I read stuff like this or Theodore Dalrymple's writing about Muslims in Europe – I just substitute Muslim with Illegal Immigrant – and it matches up quite nicely with what's happening in the states.
Leftist/Progs would have us forget that there were two Muslim divisions of the Nazi SS in the Second World War: the 13th SS "Handschar/Kroatische" Division and the 21st SS "Skanderbeg/Albanische" Division that were used primarily against partisan forces in Yugoslavia and to hunt down Jews. The men of "Handschar/Kroatische" Division wore Islamic-style fezzes sporting both the Nazi eagle-and-swastika and SS "death's head" insignias. This division was personally inspected by the Palestinian Muslim Grand Mufti of Jerusalem.
I'm not a conservative, I'm a libertarian. When ever I see comments that appear to drag the dialog to what I consider the political left (censorship), I start questioning people trying to tug them ever so slightly to the what I consider the political right (freedom).
It's not a far stretch from saying people shouldn't do something to saying people can't do something. I just respectfully and friendly point out when I think people are getting a little too close to the line.
In reply to myself, Yes I'm being SARCASTIC!!. The portrayal of the Joker was the worst thing about the original Batman series with the possible exception of Batgirl constantly getting tied up in that skintight leather outfit (SARC ON AGAIN! — I was 13 freakin' years old when she showed up — the mere mentionof Yvone Craig's name still causes sympathetic tumescence)
And I actually do think that the succcess of the first Batman movie can be traced to the fact that everyone finally got to see the Joker played as the menacing SOB that he was in the comic
If only it were true, the mary jane marriage got retconned out in what I still think is the worst editorial decision in comics history. So for storyline purposes, it never happened.
But yeah, the focus on personal responsibility is decidedly conservative. Point being, lets not let one misguided charecter serve as an indictment on comics as a whole, both sides of the political spectrum have reading options and as they are suppose to reflect culture as a whole, thats how it should be.
Apologies, I may have read too much into your response. This being the Christmas season the MSM is full of feel good stories about those who have helping out those who don't.
I think it was either yesterday or the day before the local paper had a story about a secret Santa who handed out $20,000 to the less fortunate. Before a person can do that, they need to have that.
These good people who do these things deserve a lot more credit than a few stories the week before Christmas.
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you and your family!
"Why doesn't DC come up with something closer to the truth? How about Mohammed dressed in pink tights with a large codpiece flying around molesting children."
That's what lefties do – they come-up with elaborate, "out-there" story-lines instead of using the what's right there in front of them. You know, the truth.
See:
""The story reveals to us a cult-like group that is assassinating France’s fringe political figures. The cult’s goal is to cause unrest and riots to be led by the murdered political figure’s followers. This group hypnotizes its members to kill and then to commit suicide so that the cult cannot be discovered.""
Thomas Jefferson absolutely despised the free press. They raked him over the coals with out mercy.
And he still said he'd rather live in a society with freedom of the press, than one with out it.
The way I see it, there's over a billion Muslims in the world. If we were at war with them it would make WWII look like Grenada.
There is a very small number of Muslims who believe in violent jihad. But I understand, even a small percentage of over a billion people is still a significant number.
The jihadist want to convince the west we are at war with Islam, and they want to convince Muslims that we in the west are at war with Islam.
Screw them, I'm smarter than that. That's why I have a wife and don't have to resort to sex with goats.
I agree that a lot of wealthy people (and some not so wealthy people) are generous and that the generosity doesn't get the coverage it should.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family as well!
Ironically enough those very same despots, dictators and thugs running government are the real target of the jihadists. The west is simply a different battle field for there war.
The jihadists ultimate goal is to topple the Saudi royal family, seize control of the Islamic holy sites in Arabia, and there by proclaiming the right to define Islam for Muslims world wide.
As a bonus they also get all the Saudi's money, and the oil. That gives them money, leverage and staging ground for nukes.
We in the west aren't their targets, they see us as in their way.
You never heard of the Great Surrender? A French super hero who can fly to any place in the world and surrender in under 5 minutes?
Okay, that was a cheap joke. The French get props from me for taking on – and taking out – the Somali pirates.
That's what I mean about the unintended consequences of the publisher's decision.
If one side is preaching violent jihad, this can be one – of many – ways to counter their argument.
We're never going to convert the hard core violent jihadists. We have the armed services for those ones. But the ones who haven't decided to join, we can help influence. This could turn out to be one positive method.
Would make it kind of hard to swing from sky scrapper to sky scrapper.
But could be a lot of fun at frat parties.
How sad. Having no ideas of their own and not having the necessary talent to think up their own characters and put together a story about those characters leftist hollyweird has begun digging through the past searching for more once great ideas to trash. Leftist hollywood craps on everything they touch. But then again they are playing to the 14 year old and crap jokes are popular with that crowd.
They are playing to the 14 year old because they already know most adults won't buy this crap. Still, I'm not sure that even 14 year olds are going to buy this garbage.
Send me your address. Would you like it pre-coffeed or just coffee ready?
right, caught up in the moment. sorry about that.
