Cheetos (Poor People Need Fathers Not Government Programs)
by Victoria JacksonI’m sitting in a waiting room. I’m waiting for my auditioning squad to execute me. I’m wearing my black and red plaid, $1400 St. John audition outfit. I’ve worn it to every audition for six years. It has a small hole in it. I hope they don’t notice. I have time to kill so I’m trying to crawl inside the head of a liberal.
The people auditioning me will all be liberals. Should I hide my recent, passionate Tea-Bagging activities, if the topic comes up? Why should they hate me? I only want the best for everyone. My beliefs in the Bible, and freedom and capitalism are only ideals that bless people. And, they worked real good from 1776 to 2008…with a hitch in the 60s where immorality, free love, the pill, drugs, divorce, and the breakup of the family started the thread of morality unraveling. You can’t have a great country without the spirit of The Ten Commandments hovering in the hearts of its citizens.
This execution squad has probably already labeled me. But, the labels, they are a’changing. Republicans have moved left. Liberals have moved left. I guess it’s The Second Law of Thermodynamics, “the world is in a state of entropy,” or decay, or left-moving. Now the word “radical” is in the mix. It’s a swirl of words that represent belief systems, or “world-views” as Chuck Colson put it in his book, “How Now Shall We Live?”
One must watch the news all day to keep up with the swiftly changing currents. Dennis Prager had the author of “Heaven and Earth” on his radio show today, and I sighed with relief. Finally, someone is addressing the global warming hoax with a real scientist. But, suddenly KGIL has canceled all of it’s conservative talk radio programs and replaced them with music. The hairs on my arms pop up. Has the Fairness Doctrine begun? And we didn’t even get to fight it?
I saw a real fat girl once, slowly walking down the middle of an empty street in a “poor” neighborhood. She was eating from a bag of Cheetos. I was in my car at a stop light, watching her. I thought maybe no one told her that Cheetos make you fat, or maybe her life is so sad that that bag of Cheetos is the highlight of her day. Sometimes, Cheetos is the highlight of my day. I said a little prayer for her. Then, she dropped the empty bag in the middle of the street.
My empathy dissipated.
Statistics confirm the fact that most “poor” people have no fathers. My father told me that Cheetos makes you fat. He also built a gym in our backyard. We lived in a very “poor” neighborhood. Our house cost $10,000 when he bought it in the 50’s. The neighborhood then got worse. All of our neighbors’ houses began to look dirty and have five broken cars and beer cans in their front yards. Our house was always immaculate and our front yard always had freshly mown grass. My father took us to church 3 times a week. He read the Bible out loud to Grandma and Grandpa every Sunday night, at Grandma’s house, because Grandpa was an agnostic and wouldn’t go to church. My father taught me how to read when I was 5, so that when I started first grade I was the best reader. I skipped second grade. My father played the piano every night and taught us show tunes, and how to harmonize. My father taught us how to water ski. My father was a gymnastics coach, so he taught me a “flip flop” and I was the only cheerleader who could do that. My father protected us. He bought a bee bee gun that looked like a real gun, to scare burglars away. We were robbed four times. He said, “I could never kill anyone.” My father made us feel safe. He gave us confidence and a history and a future.
That Cheetos girl probably doesn’t have a father. And, no amount of government assistance, housing, food stamps, free college, or ObamaCare can give her that. She needs a father.
Obama didn’t have a father. Maybe that’s why he sees the government as Daddy.
My auditioning/execution squad enters the room and all my thoughts start to swirl away. The only thought that remains is that I must tell the truth. I only want the best for everyone.

I hope that the audition went well for you. You might be on to something though. The lack of fathers and the marginalizing of fathers is one of the great ills of modern society. This is the fruit that has been born of the Great Society and Radical Feminism. Men are now considered guilty and have to prove thier competence.
Victoria, best of luck with your audition. I’m sure your Dad, also told you to be yourself. If by being a decent proud American precludes you from a job, that speaks volumes about the job, and explains the deterioration of the entertainment industry as a whole.
Good luck Victoria! However, please don't use the term "tea-bagging." It is strictly a liberal construct and has a pornographic meaning. We are Tea Partiers.
I'm poor – I live in a very poor neighborhood, I survive because of the things my father taught me. I completely sympathize with you Victoria. I can tell you that there are very few 'fathers' in my neighborhood and amoung those there are very few that are 'husbands' and even fewer without criminal records. Hopefully one day the things my father taught me will help me not be so poor and I can move.
"That Cheetos girl probably doesn’t have a father. And, no amount of government assistance, housing, food stamps, free college, or ObamaCare can give her that. She needs a father.

Amen! Sadly, many are missing the most important Father of all.
It is a shame that these folks have no standards and the government that would feed, cloth and house them also has no standards and requires nothing of them…..look at Detroit, LA and numerous other inner city graveyards………
seriously, why don't you live next door to me?! we could have so much fun together solving this country's problems. i'll bring the cheesecake. cheescake only makes you fat if you don't rail against the socialist path the gov'ment is on afterwards.
Bruce,
I suggest you clean the "turds" out of your comments. It really removes any slight hint of intellect factor from your original question.
I hope your audition went well. Thank you for being so bold.
And thank you for what you've said here. I too was blessed with a good and loving father. The problems that come when that is not present are too many to list. You've pointed out a few here. And yes, I agree with the theory about Barack Obama.
I think you're on to something. I noticed a long time ago that our society has really marginalized fathers in general, much less a strong father figure in the family.
Any sitcom on TV you look at, the father is portrayed as a bumbling idiot who would not be able to find the nose on his face without his wife's help. No wonder a 'Father' is starting to become extinct. They're merely sperm donors these days.
Perhaps some misguided feminist ideals have gone a little too far.
The more I read Victoria the more I love her. She was always my favorite on SNL and I was never sure why. Now I know. God bless and keep up the great work!
"You mind is probably made of turds"
I read this and thought, "a classic example of projection."
And then I thought,
"Bruce, turds for brains would be an improvement over whatever is in your head."
Another brilliant post VJ. Thoughtful and incisive. I always look to your contributions to BH. Keep up the good work.
You post actually made me cry. Very awesome. Hope the audition went well. Thanks for posting.
It's an observation. One that many people happen to agree with. You, however, seem to have a problem with freedom, religion and capitalism. I do hope you don't live in the US, but if you do, perhaps a move to a country that's more to your liking may be an option. Your mind is probably made of turds ("shut up and _______" what ever it is you do.)
The Democrat's "Great Society" of 1964 was supposed to replace the father in families. It is time for the Liberals to admit, daddy ain't comin home.
From Thomas Sowell's most recent column:
"The great escape from our time is escape from personal responsibility for the consequences of one's own behavior . . . government programs are far less likely to solve the country's problems than solve the politician's problem of getting the votes of people who believe the answer to every problem is for government to {do something}."
profound. please enlighten us some more.
My husband and I went to our children's open house yesterday. He was one of three men who showed. Andy usually wants to be involved, and if I sense a hesitation, I hassle him him til he agrees to show. Anyhoo, he went, and then got to hear how the teacher is looking for a "home room mother" to help. This was said numerous times, and I got a little perturbed. As the session ended, I saw Andy talk to the teacher. He later told me that he had mentioned to her how it was odd that she kept saying "home room mother". I was so glad he brought it to the teacher's attention. When fathers are involved, sometimes it seems that they are not acknowledged or shown the same respect that the mothers are given. Maybe it is assumed that Mom will do it? Andy gives our children things I cannot, due to differences in personality, gender, experience, etc.. I cannot imagine, and do not want to imagine how we would cope without him. Thank you Andy! Your lovin' wife
Wow Bruce, is that what passes for discourse in the 57th state. You really do love your Barry that’s sweet. We’ll use your metaphor so you can understand, “Barry fails much, …you can’t polish a turd.”
"…they worked real good from 1776 to 2008"
Not really.. Obama is just the latest calamity.
In 1812 US thought it was a good idea to invade Canada.. (mostly for internal political reason, those short victorious wars and all)
Then civil war..
Federal reserve gets formed.. gov manages to drive country into depression. Comes up with the solution that is worse then the problem.. Then we get to 60s and later stagflation. Even under the best (Reagan) deficit is rising and rising..
Oh and 10 commandments.. you remind me of the sentiment of US servicemen in Japan after the war. They could not believe that people with no real religion could move from society were people walked around with swords 1868.. to defeating a major european power in 1905 to challenging the superpower (an losing) in WW2. Nation's culture, morals and spirit have more to do with this then any religious dogma.
Very thoughtful post indeed. I feel like that Indian from the old commercial long ago minus the tear when I see people so easily just dump their trash when they are done and as they do so they look as if they have zero guilt in doing it. Well said that without any kind of guiding light in your formative years you just don't know what is right or wrong. I also feel sad for anyone that judges Victoria on her voice or her time on SNL, there is a wonderful and bright mind behind that facade.
I wouldn't be knocking the influence of religion in a nation's morals. It sounds like you're just making a statement off the top of your head.
Yes, fathers are so important! I have believed for a long time that many social ills are caused by fatherlessness.
Men need to step up and be MEN. I married a MAN who takes initiative, is a leader in the workplace, is a leader in our church, and is a loving husband and father. We work as a team, but I believe God wants him to have the daunting responsibility of being the leader of our family. I have my important roles. I respect him and he values me and my input tremendously. It works for us.
My father was absent. I did not feel loved by him because he did not love my mom, he did not provide for us financially, he pursued his own interests, he did not protect us, and he did not teach my brother how to be a MAN.
Fathers need to teach their sons to be MEN, as well. No more extended adolescence playing video games and mooching off Mom and Dad!
I recently started to read your entries. I truly enjoy them.
I am a father of six children. All mine, all from the same wife, my one and only wife to whom I have been married for 15 years today. She is a stay home mother and wife who home schools and reads the Bible to them each day. I wake up at 5 am each morning to have my 'quiet time'. I have my coffee, read my chapter of Scriptures, and pray for my wife, my children, my community, my brothers and sisters in Christ who suffer persecution all around the world before I leave for work at 6:30. I believe this is critical.
We too were poor, but never thought of ourselves as being poor. We had a father, and that made all the difference. My beautiful wife is twelve years younger than me and has had 5 fathers in her life. She recently, after twenty five years reacquainted with her real father. It has made all the difference in the world.
None of my children have friends that have both parents, most without a real father, and it shows in their attitude and world view, many of them tell my children how lucky they are to have a mother and father who are not divorced, and more importantly, are amazed that we don't hate each other.
God has blessed me more than I could possible imagine or deserve and I have a wife that is straight out of Proverbs 31:10 that testifies to this.
I am convinced that my wife plays a major part in me being the kind of father I am called to be. It is my hope that when I leave this world, my legacy will be that my sons and daughters enjoy a healthy relationship with their husbands and wives and that my sons will never abdicate their responsibilities of fatherhood. We need it so much in our current society, and ALL the evidence proves it.
Thank you.
"many social ills are caused by fatherlessness. "
For example, lack of a good, loving, servant-leader father can lead to…
disregard for authority (which leads to disregard for laws)
emotional and mental illness
poverty
no motivation to succeed
no motivation to learn
no motivation to work hard and make a living in our free economy
poor reading and math skills
poor achievement in school
selfishness
And as Victoria noted, good fathers teach their children to exercise, not litter, and keep their yards neat!
How nice it is to know that I am not the only conservative woman out there! The women rights movement was the beginning of the decline of the American family which has resulted in millions of people looking to the governemnt for that support. And with the secular movement moving into full swing, people now look to the governemnt as their "moral" compass. I have faith in myself and my abilities and not the government.
"I've never been poor, only broke. Being poor is a state of mind. Being broke is a temporary situation."
–Mike Todd, entrepreneur
Thank you Ms. Jackson.
As a father, it's nice to know we're appreciated. My own daughter, 16 years old, would not put it so eloquently, but I can tell, inside, she does feel the same. She comes to me when she's scared, confused, mad, looking for guidance, advice, or just a shoulder to cry on. And I consider that a blessing from God. I know deep down, she does too.
What statistics?
"Poverty rates are highest for families headed by single women, particularly if they are black or Hispanic. In 2007, 28.3 percent of households headed by single women were poor, while 13.6 percent of households headed by single men and 4.9 percent of married-couple households lived in poverty."

Don't bother actually spending three freaking minutes on a Google search before you post your vile, crude and pointlessly insulting crap. I'm sure your time is valuable.

"…you remind me of the sentiment of US servicemen in Japan after the war."
Could you please source that? I've never heard that from any U.S. serviceman who was stationed in Japan after the war. Including my uncle.
Nice testimony, Keith.
Stay away from the internet and you should be fine.
Uhhh…well, I guess it's too late for that good advice.
An awful lot of fathers are in jail, particulary in some neighborhoods, though sloth and stupidity know no boundaries when it comes to socioeconomics. . Maybe if we figured out why poverty and crime were so inter-related we could get to the root of the problem.
Gads Bruce, who pee'd in your Cheerios today? You SO do NOT have my sympathy.
Bad form, Bruce. Bad form.
Dear Ms. Jackson-
I've been reading your pieces ever since they began running here on BH, and I must say you've come quite a ways in that short time. You may be on the way to making a name for yourself as a serious commentator. I wish you the best of luck.
We are so uneducated.
Your father sounds like a wonderful person. The only place where I would disagree with him is in buying the BB gun instead of a real gun. While gun ownership is a big responsibility, it is also a right. I definitely don't want to shoot anyone, but you have to be prepared for someone breaking into your home, especially if you have children.
While I fully support the second amendment, I don't want a gun in my house if I can avoid it. I do have BB gun, but that's for shooting stray cats that use my back yard for a litter box.
For protection, I got me a dog. Big one too. Really big. Five months and he's already pushing 65 lbs. His father is a retired New York State trooper K9. And he has two uncles serving in Afghanistan. He's already got the attention and respect of every one in the neighborhood. And on top, he's a lovable, playful goof ball.
His name is Wolfgang!

A small correction of a suspicion: KGIL/Los Angeles' flip to from talk music had nothing at all to do with any potential return of the Fairness Doctrine.
The station, which is owned by a tiny company, changed formats because a new conservative talk station will be on the air in Los Angeles as of September 8, when KFWB is changing from all news to talk. KFWB is owned by CBS Radio, which is huge, and the station has a better dial position and better signal. KGIL simply wouldn't be able to compete. Just market forces in action.
KFWB is picking up Laura Ingraham from KGIL and bringing Michael Smerconish into the market, and putting Dr. Laura, formerly on KFI, on from noon-3pm. The rest of the lineup will likely be Salem or Talk Radio Network conservatives. With KFWB, conservative talk will soon have a far LARGER platform in L.A., as it goes head-to-head against the KFI talk powerhouse.
Which is not to say that there is no danger of a return to the Fairness Doctrine, stealthily or otherwise. But this change in L.A. radio is not an example of it.
"I bet the Cheetos girl doesn't have a dad." Jesus, how presumptuous. Jackson's piece is an exercise in right wing, back handed elitist pity, repackaged as the tired old half truths that have been spewing from Limbaugh's reactionary word hole for two decades. It's called motivated reasoning- "cherry pick" the ideas and assumptions that fit your predetermined worldview and the rest of the facts be damned.
Jackson's implication that socialism began a few months ago indicates her absolute disregard for history. This empty headed old bromide will be alive when some hopey Dem is elected in say 2040. Freedom 1776-2040 RIP. We've had "socialism" in numerous forms for decades, public schools, parks, medicare, public roads, rural electrification, and the golden calf of us conservatism the US military. The only way a volunteer force can be maintained is to promise the recruit some socialism (free room and board, free health insurance, free transportation, free clothing) If you think otherwise then start advocating for cutting these benefits and see how many folks join. If you are against the idea of health care access for all then why would you not call for the end of access to education for all? Stop the socialism of public education. (BTW this is my second post, I was invited back for more enlightening)
I stand by my reference to "turds."
There is no crime in being yourself. America is a nation that is grounded on values, none greater than individual liberty and with that, individual responsibility.
Nobody should be ashamed to say these values were planted here by Christans. Nobody should be shouted down for wanting to main these values, nobody should be ashamed to be yourself.
This isn't about Christans being better than other faiths, it is about individuals being free to be themselves without having to keep their faith in the closet, no matter what faith. And allowing America to be proud of what it is. The values of individual liberty and individual responsibility are what define modern conservatives.
Hi Tom,
Thanks.
Indeed, there is much to be desired on the internet.
Nonetheless, some things are worthy eh? like this site, Rush Limbaugh and Voice of the Martyrs to mention a few. Discernment in all things.
Take care.
There is no crime in being yourself. America is a nation that is grounded in values, none greater than individual liberty and with that, individual responsibility.
Nobody should be ashamed to say these values were planted here by Christans. Nobody should be shouted down for wanting to preserve these values, nobody should be ashamed to be yourself.
This isn't about Christans being better than other faiths, it is about individuals being free to be themselves without having to keep their faith in the closet, no matter what faith. And allowing America to be proud of what it is. The values of individual liberty and individual responsibility are what define modern conservatives.
WOW.. That says it all, Obama didn't have a father and wants the gov. to be the father…. Great article.. Hope you got the role, but we know how unsympathetic the left is to the right.
drug addiction, alcholism, eating disorders, etc, etc, etc…
Funny you say this, my Mom(79) has been saying if for years… She even sites childrens books, like Berenstein Bears.. Look at the Bill Cosby show, they did it there..
Oh. My. God. The expected dirty-mouthed response from a stupid, ill-educated (mental) adolescent whose notion of 'history' is Zinn's fabricated class-war fable. The sort of bratty punk who lives in the lap of the most prosperous society in the history of the world and all he can do is bitch because he can't get a free pony.
You want statistics (as if you ever took a stats course while pursuing your Anti-American Studies major )? All right- the US has GDP per capita (PPP)of $46,849, first among countries with populations of 10 million or more (otherwise Luxembourg and Macao are first). Median household income: $55,450, second after Switzerland. And that is gross, pre-tax income: in net after-tax we of course further blow enserfed Europeans away.
So, tell us what your beef is, do.
Bruce darling, you should be studying instead of showing off your dirty language like most eight-year-olds. Have mommy give you a note for the teacher to excuse you for being tarde.
Not quite. Mythbusters proved that indeed you can polish a turd. But it's still a turd inside. Much like Bruce's head, for example.
Speaking as a criminal lawyer, I think I can answer that: it isn't. In fact, a remarkable recent study confirmed what I had tentatively concluded from my own observations: the single principal factor in predicting criminality, controlled and uncontrolled for income etc etc, is *illigitimacy." So also for substance abuse, gang membership, drop-out rates and poverty.
The other factor is, not poverty, but existing poverty programs: the Great Society successfully disassociated entitlement from effort: money isn't earned, you 'deserve' it and it's given to you as of right by somebody else, the 'rich' or the 'Man.'
How unsurprising that some would choose to cut out the middleman! Especially if they are the product of three or four workless, fatherless households, often raised by Granma or Sis while Mama is out, pursuing and endless series of boyfriends (whose apperances often can be timed to the arrival of the monthly check).
You want to break the cycle? Abandon the welfare-benefit model and replace it with a jobs program. If you are between 18 and 65 and not disabled, you will *only* get taxpayer money to the extent you show up to engage in useful work, whether filling potholes or picking up trash or scrubbing graffiti.
28% is a very high number especially when compared to the other statistics. But what do you care, right? You're just another monkey flinging his crapola….
"Obama didn’t have a father. Maybe that’s why he sees the government as Daddy."
That says it all. It also bears noting that Bill Clinton didn't have one either.
Victoria! Another masterpiece of thinking! Being a real Dad to your kids requires the intestinal fortitude to face down the liberal world we live in these days and the bravery to overcome the immoral messages of the media and the entertainment industry with truth and logic. I am a real Dad and with you in spirit. Dads are the real heroes and the government is not even close. Obama doesn't have a real daddy and his subsitute is a shoddy, second rate government that doesn't care for their 'children'.
"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a hole goes through a net. Our Constitution was made ONLY for a moral and religious people: it is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." – John Adams
Where did you get your stats, Bruce? Are you suggesting things are typically better without Dad? Are you a father?
You look good standing next to turds.
"I stand by my reference to "turds.""
Only in reference to the substance occupying the vacancy between your ears.
Now sit still while I attemt to hammer this through your overhanging brow ridges. The following is a nonsensical statement, you boob: "We've had "socialism" in numerous forms for decades, public schools, parks, medicare, public roads, rural electrification, and the golden calf of us conservatism the US military." Here beginnith the lesson, dunce: there is an an enormous distinction, in fact all the difference in the world, between the *general welfare,* and *individual entitlements.* Try to wrap your cranial merde around that concept. Go on- I'll give you a while.
Everything you list (except Medicare) are benefits *for the populace generally.* Nobody gives you five feet of highway for your very own. Got it? If not, I'll move up to a twenty-pound sledge. The generation of 1776 most assuredly understood the distinction: Madison wrote in The Federalist, ""I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."
Medicare of course is a Socialist program: a system of involuntarily transferring money (or debt) from one set of individuals to another set of individuals , not as remuneration for services redered or goods provided, but as a matter of automatic personal 'entitlement,' which places it across the Red Rubicon; but it's only been around for forty years and of course as predicted is now poised to bankrupt the nation.
But if that (unsurprisingly) passed right over your microcephalic head, I'll put it in terms you might understand: Buy your own damn health insurance, ya bum. I owe you nuthin'
Yes, despite the good intentions of the 14th Amend, the US trampled many in its path to greatness. But never throughout ALL of history have so many had it so good. statistics- have you never studied anything. 300 million have some of the greatest oppurtunities this world has to offer. Out of 6 billion people on earth, few can even dream of having a life as good as what is here. Virtually ever home in America has electricity and running water for gosh sakes. Do you have ANY idea how many people DON"T have that extravagance? And contrary to what the radicals would like, you can still speak your mind and NOT get hauled off to the gulag. Try that in your little MARXIST utopias. ANY OF THEM. IN ANY TIME PERIOD YOU WANT TO PICK. NAME ONE! JUST ONE, that didn't require bayonets and "camps" to maintain control.
Dingleberry, does "single leading factor" convey anything to your tiny brain?
Tell us, o sanctimonious one, what does cause poverty?
I'm makin' popcorn- this oughta be funny.
he ran out of Cheetos.
Well, of course you stand by your reference to "turds". You haven't the ability to express yourself any other way.
You are simply a run-of-the-mill obot; tossing out straw man arguments and using somewhat nasty language because that's how you've been taught. (And you've quite obviously never been in the service. I'm sure the concept of sacrifice is alien to you. Though you are quite content to enjoy the rights and freedom bought for you with other people's sacrifice and blood.)
And of course you are enthusiastic about the idea of "universal health care". Leeches are always enthusiastic about the possibility of getting something for nothing. You and yours constantly go through life with your hands out, whining and sniveling that "people are selfish" and "the government doesn't do enough". You are all too ready to trade your freedom for a handout; because, to you, freedom has no value. You believe it really is free.
There are those, however, who are not so willing to trade their freedom for the soft slavery of a socialist utopia.
the revolution to establish individual liberty over government control
civil war to spread those ideas to more people
sufferage movement to spread those ideas farther
WW2 to keep those ideas from being turned back
Moon landing
Cold War Victory
my son being born.
I think we've had a pretty good run.
BTW shintoism is a religion, and so is worshipping an emporer. religion is the glue that binds the culture, morality and spirit together.
Agreed, that sentence really struck a chord with me as well! Victoria, best of luck with the interviews! But goodness, I hope nothing interferes with your writing for us…
I, too am blessed with a wonderful husband, who is also doing a great job as a father and grandfather.
I have also noticed society not acknowledging the great work men do with the children. Grandpa takes our little grandson and daughter to the river for fishing and when she was growing up he took her coon hunting on Saturday night and to Church on Sunday morning. She is such a loving daughter and I thank God daily for my family and especially my husband. Sheila
I have but one minor argument with your article: You shouldn't refer to "Tea Party" activities as "Tea-Bagging". That is a vile term, referring to a mainly homo-erotic practice, that was brought into use by the leftists in order to ridicule and denigrate the Tea Party Movement; and they seem to derive great pleasure from being able to use such a vile term on network television.
Other than that, it is a fine article; and I enjoyed it very much – as I have your other articles.
btw; I hope your audition was successful.
"what does cause poverty" Um…er…not being employed?
I knew I liked you. This is one of the best posts I've read today, probably because I can so easily identify with everything you just said.
I hope you get the part if you want it. Keep in mind though, when G-d closes one door, he opens another.
Russia was a "Major European Power" in 1905
"This isn't about Christans being better than other faiths, it is about individuals being free to be themselves without having to keep their faith in the closet, no matter what faith."
I couldn't possibly agree more. I think this quote goes hand in hand with your statement:
"It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." – Patrick Henry
I wish there were more men like you, the world would be a better place.
Victoria, you are bang on the mark. No fathers.
Here's a "bad father/no father" story that will leave readers shaking.
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/29787673/t...
Getting ready to say the same thing robobbob about Shintoism, also don't forget Buddhism, as well as plenty of cults, atheism, and an underground (nevertheless, strong) Christian community. And while perhaps not really a religion, Bushido needs to be considered as well. By the way, Bushido: The Soul of Japan by Inazo Nitobé (a Christian) is a very interesting read.
As a 40 year-old daughter who still calls her dad to chew the fat, discuss her fears, mull over the state of society, and laugh til she nearly hurls, I salute you too! My dad taught me to be strong, and still gives me advice on how to handle the mean people and the sad/bad times. I dread the day when one of us leaves this planet, for he has always been my solid and true sounding board. I hope that I do that for him as well now. Hopefully, you,one day, will hear something like this from your daughter, as is it is always good to hear it out loud
.
I'm an amateur comedian, and I'm teaching her how to tell jokes, timing, appropriateness, and most importantly, to know when its time to leave a joke alone, and let audience enjoy it.
Every time she makes me laugh out loud, I hear an 'I love you dad' in it.
I love you Victoria! Let's go have a drink sometime! ; )
Maybe you're not a hopeless cause after all. Ending the government's monopoly on education would be hugely beneficial, especially to the poor who are sentenced to a life of ignorance and poverty, because they don't have the extra resources to attend private schools, all for the sole benefit of the teacher unions.
Hoooo….not a bad answer, Grasshopper. Not great, but not too bad.
Leaving aside the distinction between unemployment and poverty (I've experienced the former, but never the latter), and ex arguendo jumping over the distinction between temporary and chronic unemployment, and the association of this last with the unemployable and the not-interested-in-employment….let's move on.
Tell me, O Critias, what diminishes unemployment? And what well-intentioned government actions actually increase it (damn that Law of Unintended Condequences)?
There is no profit in ensuring all members of the public have access to education. in fact there is no profit in ensuring all people have access to anything.
I see it as larger than that. If leftists can break apart our neighborhood communities, our faith communities, and finally, our famiily communities, what do we have left? To whom do we turn? In their plans, it's the government.
m, you have a point. Public schools are Socialst. That's why they are such miserable, opathetic failures. I agree completely: abolish them.
Be a man. Take responsibility for yourself and your children.
I love the fact that your Australopithecan cerebrum can't quite manage the rather patently obvious distinction beteween general and individual welfare, and so like most special-ed students describe as 'distortions' that which you can't comprehend.
P.S. The police: I take it you don't have a burglar alarm or a gun, then? Thanks for the info.
How about making poor choices with one's money? That's at least as much to blame.
Which is why Marxism always fails, without exception.
What a lovely adhominem attack. Do you actually intend to make a reasoned argument or are you too busy thinking up the next verbal slam?
Wow that kid has talent. I hope he ends up channeling in the right direction someday. He could really help on the war on terror.
I would say useful job is defined as any job that Americans won't do.
I do. Someone else put out the "lack of Japanese religion" comment. They were very religious, just not Christian. It is the transdendal belief in something beyond the ordinary world and of a greater existance. Very unlikely kamakazi would have given themselves to an the idea of a nietzchian super man marxist whatevers. Likewise nor would our brave guncrews stayed at their stations. Only the Soviets, and losing nazis, had to follow behind their own lines with shoot to kill commissars. That is why the destruction of religion is so critical to the NWO statists. Nothing may challenge the supremacy of the state, or their entire nihilist system collapses.
Daddy issues?
Nope, just the ones trying to destroy America.
Hurray for the GDP. Statistic don't lick stamps to pay my rising healthcare premiums.
No, but there is profit in supplying desired goods and services. Education is a commodity just like any other commodity and service. The most efficient method for distributing commodities and services is a free market.
And unless a customer has the means to acquire superior products and/or services, they are stuck with government hand outs, as is the case in public education. New York state has a 40% drop out rate. Does that sound like the government monopoly working?
Fortunately for my daughter, we have the extra resources so she attends a private Catholic high school which has a 100% graduation rate, and the only graduates who don't go on to college, enter the military.
Wouldn't it be great if instead of pissing away all the tens of billions on keeping the unions happy, instead the government let us keep it, and we could afford to send all our kids to best possible private schools? It would cost a fraction of what we pay now through property school taxes.
Thank you Victoria, for the lovely tribute to your Dad. You do him proud.
Poverty is largely a state of mind. Many live with low or limited incomes, but find ways to live WITHIN those incomes. These are usually in the 80% of bottom-quintile earners who rise into the higher quintiles in future years.
Your sad example with the Cheetos sounds like one of those who are perpetually trapped on the bottom. She's likely to spend much of her limited income on lottery tickets, junk food, cigarettes, have a wide-screen plasma TV with a premium cable hook-up, and keeps her children shod in Air Jordans and Sketchers while feeding them on food stamps.
As for future auditions, Break a leg.
Oh, you're too funny. First you demand statistics, and then insist they're irrelvent when you don'tlike the answer you get. Wotta rube!
Who, if not yourself, do you want to pay your "rising healthcare premiums?" There methinks we get to the rub- you want *somebody else* to pay them for you. You expect to be taken care of, you expect to leech off the productive. And then you have the gall to call your larceny-by-proxy a "right!"
Ecce Echt-liberal! (forgive the mixed languages, but I like the near-alliteration). The sponger, the deadbeat, the gimme-gimme-gimme spoiled child.
Love ya Victoria. But I just want to say that not all athiests are liberals and not all liberals are atheists. Some people convert to their religions but most people just take on the religion of their parents. I think personality traits such as empathy are inborn and are already present in us before we are old enough to learn about religion. Parents are important in continuing to behave according to consistent values (and religion can be one form of that … just not necessarily the only form available.)
I believe liberalism is motivated by empathy, but detached from the considerations of reality. It is a childlike philosophy that never grew up.
Wow! Great column. Simple point, yet so profound. Thank you Victoria.
Whoops, yah my Bushido comment was directed at that person robobbob, not you. But thanks for adding more, you make some good points! And I absolutely agree, we've had a heck of a run so far, I hope it's not even close to over.
Victoria thanks again for writing for us. I hope idiots like bruce h get edited before you ladies have to see their trash. Not that I want anyone silenced but gee whiz folks come on, do you have to sink right from exposing just how stupid you are, to reacting to someone pointing it out by regressing to 3rd grade (I'm being kind) playground language? Do you really think that encourages anyone to listen to you further? I simply start thinking about punching folks when they talk to ladies like that, myself.
The doctor prescribed meds too you for a reason. Therapy is good use of your time. Take a deep breath and relax. The world is not against you, only you are against yourself.
The "Poor" don't represent "people", like you are thinking. The "Poor" are political tools that are easily manipulated, and easily "hired" to perform political and social actions, with promises of someone else's money, or crumbs from social welfare budgets. The "Poor" are the weapon that the Marxist power elite use against private enterprise, private property, and traditional societies/economies. They are not "people", with rights, or minds, and absolutely no power of their own, as a class. They are tools, and when their functions are no longer needed, they are put in their places, or eliminated, because the Left's empty promises could be used against it, once the Poor understand these truths. So, don't start coming up with ideas to actually elevate the Poor, because the Left isn't done with them yet.
