Cockroaches in the Hospital on Your Chest
by Victoria JacksonSince I turn 50 next month, I’m focused on my Bucket List. There are only 2 things left I haven’t accomplished. 1) I’ve always wanted to be “an airhead on a sitcom.” Of all the roles I’ve played, many of which I wasn’t suited for, strangely, this one has eluded me. 2) Attend a weekly Bible study. So, I am now in a Bible study group on Wednesdays and the rest of the week I pursue airhead roles, which basically means I wait…for an audition. I get about one a year. This year I got an audition for American Pie IV, but I turned it down because of the sexual content.
At my Bible study group this week I was sitting between Mavis and her Chihuahua named Pedro, and Sonia, an Iranian who lived five years in Russia, where she waited to receive her legal U.S. citizenship. I asked Pastor Joel “Why does the Bible say Jesus was from the lineage of King David, if he had no blood from his father in him, since he was born of a virgin? Pastor Joel excitedly replied, “Oh, well turn to Matthew 1 and Luke 3! Mary and Joseph were both descendants of David as you can see by these genealogies. So, the Old Testament prophecy was fulfilled that said the Messiah would be from the priestly (through Nathan) and kingly (through Solomon) lineage of David. The blood of Mary which was from David ran through Jesus. Oh. I always wondered about that.
As we were leaving, Sonia and I started talking about the 48 pages of “Hate Speech” I received on The Huffington Post after my last Big Hollywood article. Sonia said, “When people can’t defend their position on an issue, they attack you personally.”
“Yeah,” I said. “I would love someone to talk me into being a liberal. But they can’t give me one good reason. Take socialized medicine for instance, the ‘Health Care Reform’ that the President is trying to shove through the Senate as quickly as possible. They can’t give me one good reason I should want it. I mean, they say it will be cheaper, but that’s not true, because our taxes will go up to pay for it.”
Sonia told me that when she lived in Communist Russia, her friend had appendicitis and was sent to the hospital. She told Sonia that cockroaches crawled over her chest at night. Sonia then went on to explain that with socialized medicine, desperate patients resort to an “underground” system. Deals are made “under the table.” Deals involving your life! She compared it to the police force there. She said that when you are pulled over for speeding, the police expect you to slip them a folded up bill under your driver’s license. Sonia said, “Did you hear the story about the professor and the classroom? It explains communism so well. The professor told the class that after every test, all the students’ grades would be averaged and all would receive the same grade. So, after the first test, the A students who studied all night and the F students who partied all night, all received a C. As the semester went on, the A students quit studying, and all received an F.”
With no competition, humans reach the lowest common denominator. If capitalism dies, and there is no competition for patients let’s say, doctors will all study and work as little and as poorly as possible…as will hospital maintenance workers. Thus, the cockroaches.
I walked to my car in the parking lot humming the theme from Camelot. At least I got to live at the tail end of a magical place called America. I’m an eyewitness who can tell my grandchildren about a faraway land of freedom where the people who worked the hardest were rewarded. And everyone tried to out perform each other and so, everything was top quality. Houses and cars and pools and food. They were all the biggest and best in the world. And people respected God and humbly thanked Him for their blessings. But gradually, the people started taking their blessings for granted. They started to expect rewards without working for them. They felt entitled. Even the strangers who moved into the land felt entitled. No one thanked God. They even started to mock Him. Bible studies started to be referred to as “Hate Speech” gatherings…Leviticus 26 was a crumpled, yellowed page blowing in the wind…
I put my dog-eared Bible in the back seat of my car and stared at it. Someday soon we both might be “underground.”
My friend Liz called me today, “I think there needs to be a call-to-action rather than just resolving that this is our fate. Obama, who shouldn’t be President in the first place, is systematically destroying this country. It used to be called TREASON. He’s NOT upholding the constitution — that’s treasonous! And we’re just watching as though it’s all right!”
“Okay,” I sighed, ”I’ll stay in the fight.”

Yes, girl, stay in the fight!
You are truly a good person. You don't come across many people like you anymore. Thanks for being yourself and not changing just because some people find you too honest. Sunshine is the best disinfectant. Shine on, Victoria.
If you ever get a change, come speak at Creation Festival (east coast, please).
Anyways, you've been in "UHF", one of the greatest comedies of all time.
Yes, PLEASE do stay in the fight!
Victoria, good article. I weep for the future of this country if we continue to head down this path. I wonder if my faith in mankind to do the right thing is misplaced. I want to act but don't know how. I want to keep disaster at bay but no one around me even acknowledges that it exists. And daily I try and determine what investment is best for me long term, gold or guns. My son is starting college this fall, joined Army ROTC so I have a few years before I really have to worry about him (though technically I've been worrying about him for the last 18 years and I'm sure the next 4 will be no different).
Thank you for providing a voice from the Left coast that many of us long to hear. What happened to my fathers Hollywood? Why is it so hard to acknowledge that America isn't perfect but it's still the greatest country on Earth. Where do these "blame America first" people come from?
More questions than answers these days, and more sadness than hope about the future.
I know what you mean Victoria. I'm 54 and often tell myself "Well at least you got to see America at it's finest". To me that was the day we put men on the moon. Now, as I reach the end of my life I don't think I'll miss what's to come.
Sadly, even if Obama was gone tomorrow, the people who supported him would still be there, nibbling away at the fringes of the Constitution, subverting whatever they can whenever they can. They're like a wart or a toenail fungus that never goes away. At best you can only hold them at bay. If you treat them aggressively.
…and it's not just the Cuban or the old Soviet hospitals that have a hygiene problem. The British Spectator and the U.K. Telegraph have featured horror story after horror story of filthy hospital wards (resulting in secondary infections) and slovenly, ill-mannered nurses and maintenance workers in British hospitals (Britain has had nationalized health care since just after the Second World War). If this national health care bill goes through, we're finished – skyrocketing taxes, rationed treatments, and what treatments that will be available will be low-quality.
I have decided that if you ever do get to play an airhead you should get an Oscar, (or an emmy, or Tony–depending on the venue.) Because, based on your essays, it would be SUCH a stretch for you to play someone without a brain.
Great essay! (And I hope it's not just because I feel the exact way.)

The Prez says you can keep your health care insurance. What he doesn't say, you can't change it unless you pick up the public option. It says so on page 16 of the health care bill.
http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=...
Basically, the bill will entice business people to drop the current plans in place in favor of the public option. If you still don't want the public option, too bad. It becomes your only choice. This is the CHANGE that is given to us. I HOPE it fails miserably, and laid squarely at the feet of Obama.

Victoria, when you're attacked personally, you know you've hit a nerve. People only get hysterical when there's no other way to defend their positions. Don't give up.
Happy Birthday, VJ!!
Our country, due to several reasons, has become infested with parasites – cockroaches, if you will. We have too many people like the lazy students willing to let others carry their share of the load.
Hopefully there are far more citizens than parasites of this country very much aware of the peril we are in that will stand up and be heard, and we can turn this ship of state away from the Obamacare iceberg dead ahead of us and approaching fast.
"Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves." ~~D.H. Lawrence, Classical American Literature, 1922
Victoria, you ain't quittin'!! You got more brains and looks than Huffpo, combined. Hang in there.
I won't say it's refreshing to read, in a public venue, of an entertainer going to weekly Bible study (and even some details about the content of the study), and I realize it's not for every reader. But I value any tales of small, "humble," Bible studies like that. I wish there were more, from the entertainment crowd, as I know there are more who go to Bible studies, etc. We should not be shy, or reserved, *just because* we acknowledge God's handiwork in the cosmos. That seems silly.
Thanks for taking the time to write; thanks for the mental stimulation! ;o/
'Sonia then went on to explain that with socialized medicine, desperate patients resort to an “underground” system. Deals are made “under the table.”'
Every immigrant from the former Soviet Bloc that I meet is cared to death of what Obama will do to America. It's almost like they've seen the movie or something.
Keep smiling! You've made a bunch of REAL friends here!
Thumbs way up on the Bible study!
"Noodles….you should be more careful."
Victoria,
Failure is not an option!
We must never surrender.
Loved the anecdote about Jesus's lineage. I never knew that…
I don't know VJ. You know, I read a lot of post on this web sight but I think I look forward to yours the most. They are so down to earth. I can tell they come from the heart . Stay in the fight and I will continue to look for next post. And stay in that Bible. All the answers are there. Love Ya!
Seen the movie, they stared in it.
Sorry, everybody, for such a long post. The "lowest common denominator" thing hit home and I got on a soap box. Won't happen again.
Victoria, don’t let the jackals get you down. Wear it as a badge of honor if you were attacked by the nit-wits over at that other board, and I’m sure you know …the louder they scream the closer the point must be hitting home, lots of fun. Being challenged in the town square is something leftist can not long endure, scrutiny is the enemy of the left, it flourishes in the shadows. Keep up the pressure people, conservatives are the real majority, and it’s working. Liberal = slave — Conservative = freedom!
King Shamus, you are right. A couple I know (she's Russian, he's Polish) are already putting their bailout plan in place. They love the USA, but not enough to tolerate the commie/fascist stuff again.

Since you mention the Bible, have you read the Book of Mormon? This is a very succinct abbreviation of what that book warns will happen.
and you thought the vitriol from hufpo was bad last time?
I was completely shocked at the responses to last weeks blog. The fact that a simple essay could drive the statists into such viscious personal attacks is scary, and should serve as a warning to everyone what these so called open minded liberal drones are really about. If this is how they are now, what will they do to society if they ever truely break the constitution and take control. I have no doubt that they are following the Moa or Stalin play book., and anyone who disagrees from state doctrine will be in for a trip to the re-education center.
Thank you for putting your name and reputation out there. I have to admit that I have been somewhat underwhelmed by some of your professional efforts, sorry. After reading your postings, I can say that your courage in speaking out and facing such vitriol is truely inspiring, and that you are a women of great character to be admired. Thank you
I totally had forgotten about this movie! I wish I had remembered so I could have brought it up at the Woody Allen thread yesterday- UHF blows ANYTHING Woody Allen could ever hope to do right out of the water, probably because it's not all bloated with pretentiousness. Michael Richards was great in this movie. "I'm thinking of something orange…"__Thanks for the reminder, DMCM
Jesus lived in occupied Palestine. The Romans extracted enormous taxes and subjected the people to cruel punishment. Yet Jesus didn't circulate any petitions. The religious leaders of the time also turned God's word into an oppressive system. Yet Jesus didn't try to implement change from the top down. When his followers tried to make him king, he refused. When he had an audience with a king, he was silent.
What are you fighting for? Or more importantly, Who are you fighting for? Should a Christian be defined with a political party or a political movement? Is that what the kingdom of God is about?
I'm so happy to see another article so soon from Victoria Jackson! Please PLEASE stay in the fight!
Hmmm.. first Dennis Miller becomes a conservative, Norm McDonald announces that he's pro-life, and now Victoria Jackson is becoming one of our clearest voices. It must be something about that Weekend Update desk! (And can a Tina Fey 180-degree political-turnabout be far off?).
Everyone who cares about this country's promise and potential, and all who care about the awful turn our culture is taking need to do the following things at least:
1) Go find your representatives' contact information and POST IT at your computer and your phone. (That means STATE and NATIONAL congressional reps and Senators' email, fax, phone # and mailing addresses!!) Use these DAILY if you can, as there is ALWAYS something worthwhile to support, oppose or give your opinion on. They may seem to ignore you ( I live on LI, and Schumer and Bishop have nothing but contempt for me, I'm sure), BUT BE HEARD! IF YOU DO NOT MAKE NOISE, YOU WILL BE IGNORED FOR SURE.
2) Reject the parts of our culture which are unworthy. Turn off the TV most times. Consider boycotting certain channels altogether. Cancel subscriptions. Subscribe to media that supports and cares about your concerns and values.
THINGS TO DO, CONTINUED:
3) Challenge those around you to defend THEIR values. Take a cue from Victoria: ask the liberals around you "What positive thing can you say about liberalism that would make me re-consider my views? I am always willing to change my mind about things if facts support doing so. Tell me what positive values liberalism has, and show me how those are manifested."
IF the liberal can give you ANY positive liberal values and tell you how those are manifested today, (and if they are factually accurate), then you can begin your arguments. Chances are really good that they will NOT be able to articulate much more than "Bush lied kids died" or "Cheney is a criminal", or, more than likely, something deragatory about Sarah Palin.
THINGS TO DO, PT 3
4) Consider making your party affiliation "INdependednt". If you feel the GOP no longer represents you, leave. As their membership (and contributions) drop, they will have to re-consider how to get people back. Right now they are pre-occupied with being more moderate to attract the less-than-rabid-far-leftist Dems and Independents. Conservatives are shut out. Make them NEED YOU BACK.
YOU ONLY WASTE YOURVOTE WHEN YOU VOTE AGAINST SOMEONE OR VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T REALLY REPRSENT YOU. We ALL need to stop wasting our votes. Now.
Go Victoria! Stay in the fight…..we can take our country back! Too bad so many people were clueless about Obama and his band of revolutionaries before Nvember '08.
Heck, even Lorne Michaels had nice things to say about Sarah Palin.
THINGS TO DO , PT. 4
5) Go to the Tea-Party rallies. They're all over the place. Go online, find out where and when there next one is, and go!
a) You will get a real boost from seeing that you are NOT alone in how you feel. There are MANY others who think and feel like you do. You will learn how to help get involved.
b) You will enjoy seeing and hearing the contrast between these rallies and the ones the leftist typically have. There is no profanity, no violence, no pot smoking, no riots, no heavy police presence. They are largely self-policed; if someone has an inappropriate sign, that person is politely asked to remove it. There is usually a prayer or two, the Pledge of Allegiance may be said, sometimes the National Anthem is sung.
c) Everytime I attend one, I notice that more people have come out to see what it is all about. More mailing lists are filled out. More signatures on petitions are collected. People seem happier that they are DOING something.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST:
When you DO something, you will feel less helpless.
We don't have the money. We don't have the corporate backing. We don't have the gov't backing like ACORN does. We don't have the media coverage.
What we DO HAVE, is NUMBERS. 40% of people in this country self-identify as "conservative".
This may tick some people off, but we also have righteousness on our side also.
Now get out there!
God Bless America!
Victoria, as my fiance is fond of saying, only people that matter have opinions that matter. Don't let the jackals get you down. Keep up the fight!
You're no airhead. You described the difference between free enterprise and socialism clear as a bell.
Last year I was setting up a computer system for a company that had the following business: It's clients were medical offices and clinics, it analyzed the clinics claims/payments from insurance companies so that the clinic was in a position of knowledge when it came time to negtotiate contracts with insurers.
The first requirement for any report was to take the Medcaid payment amount and multiply it by 150%. You need to average that to break even. The point? The government underpayment for procedures was being covered by overcharging private insurers. It's the hidden cost we all currently pay for the Medicaid system.
When Commie-care comes, this is how they will drive private companies out of existence.
I still say that President Reagan becoming the greatest leader in the whole world was the beginning of the end. Sure that idiot carter tanked America before and the many well back then too, but President Reagan attaining this mantle began the acceleration into the abyss.
He gave the citizens hope. He gave them wealth. He allowed for all of us the possibility to become more than we ever dreamed of. It made us ignore the cancer already festering in the government, and allowed the scums like lady slayer kennedy to skulk in the massive shadow that he made.. Allowed them to plan for the future. Allowing it to grow, when the cigar stuffing first "black" president grabbed his throne, the settings was perfect -but again stopped by a maverick name Newt- and ready to be made. It was slightly set back by Mr. Gingrich, but they destroyed him quickly enough to the point that his is just a talking head on a few news shows and without actual power for changing a thing. Corruption occurs in many obvious ways, like homeland security as the newest example of which the idea was interesting, but soundly ineffectual. This is where Bigger Governmental Invasiveness combining all security forces into one big gestalt providing absolutely useless to its overall duty. I can't even blame the demorats for that!
Like Cassius Clay's rope-a-dope, the demorats took those hits to wear down the nerves of the people while corrupting the few new Republicans that came into office in '94. This is the seventh round for America and we are the Foreman about to fall. Fall…
Fall.
Johnny H – Following that to it's logical conclusion, why do you bother to reply to Victoria's article? Why not just leave the keyboard alone, if that's what Jesus would do??
Vic – Very proud of you.
If you want to know how to live as a Christian, just ask any non-Christian–they're always "prepared to given an anwer" to exactly what we should and shouldn't be doing.
In the meantime, I'm just trying to be salt and light according to the light I believe God has given me. Not too concerned about what the JohnnyHes of the world think of me, but very concerned about what my new grandson will think of me when he grows up and asks: "How did your generation allow this to happen?"
What was that business with the moneychangers at the temple, then?
Christianity is responsible for great good in the world. It is a Christian's duty to go out and spread the good word by speech and actions. YOU may affiliate Christianity with "the Right", but Christians do not. It is the left's problem if most of them, or the most vocal of them, are atheists, pagans or whatever they are.
We suffer under injustice. Our inalienable rights are being infringed. God gives US rights, and WE LEND those rights to the government. The government does not LEND RIGHTS TO US!
Great column. One of the few that got out of Hollywood intact. While many may thing American healthcare can't ever get as bad as that in Russia or any other third world nation, think again. We're setting ourselves for failure. The healthcare bill Congress is currently negotiating will not bring down the cost of healthcare one bit. It will only pass the costs onto others. Down the road when top tax rates need to go even higher than what congress is now proposing in order to offset still escalating costs, congress will limit cost increases by decree. Hospitals will bring out numbered tickets and slow up the processing of new patients. Hospitals will need to cut costs and standards will drop. We're staring disaster in the face.
I wish you would quit type-casting yourself Victoria. There are enough blonde airheads out there as it is, why make up more of them? Then again you could always try and get on 2 and a half men as the girl John Cryer's character finally has sex with this year.. But stick to entertainment, I find your simplistic dogmatic reasoning laughable. Just because we aren't all trying to kill each other for jobs and such doesn't mean the system is malfunctioning. If we can get beyond tribalism,I think we can also begin to take responsibility for our actions. Blaming everything on god makes about as much sense as believing anything a career politician says.
As for "socialized medicine"? I think medical treatment should be free for people who pay taxes. I also believe in a flat tax system. One that EVERYONE pays a percentage of their income into (something like 5 to 8%). The people who should pay for my medical treatment should be those who have the most interest in my being healthy (other than me) like my employer and my government.
As for god…"A man without god, is like a fish without a bicycle."
-Oz
Sorry, Victoria, we cannot hire you as an airhead. You just don't fit the role.
Don't blame socialized medicine for appalling and unsanitary conditions. There was a US hospital in Washington D.C. that was in the news 2 – 3 years ago because of mold, faulty plumbing, crumbling walls, etc.
O wait, that was a military hospital, run by the US government. Never mind
Victoria, you beautifully made the case for why libertarian conservatives and social conservatives have no significant differences and must get together. God bless and strengthen you for the battle ahead. You joined the side that will lose in the short run and win in the long run. Glad you know where your real hope is being kept for you secure and untouchable.
This is the most devious deception in a package of unprecedented deceptions.
Medicare is the "public option" (paid for by patient premiums and co-pays) for those over 65.
Ask yourself – how much of the market share for the over-65 cohort belongs to the private insurance sector? Basically zero, which is what will happen for all age groups once this "option" has been available for a year or two; that is the overall plan they keep denying. As much as I feel insurance companies need drastic regulatory overhaul, you can't compete against government-subsidized competition.
NO, the problem is those reps in the GOP that DON'T stand up for conservative principles and those on the left that don't shame THEIR reps into behaving with some decency. Get your head screwed back on correctly.
Shoulda been Victoria in the Senate – not Al…
Victoria is smarter than you. Much smarter. Compared to you, she is a genius.
I think if you reread Folourned's (somewhat satirical) post again, you might find that you are actually in agreement with what was written.
Remember what happened eventually to Cassius Clay? He now is a walking vegetable like most of the hard left's democrats.
Weird! I watched your "I love You to Death" hospital scene with Kevin Kline. I wondered then when you would post again here and presto!
That the "blonde airhead" from SNL could make such a clear, succinct and winning argument while other SNL alums are stumbling, bumbling and defending systems with no track record of success…Well, I say that we declare this the "Victoria Jackson Decade!" Then maybe Floridians will elect you to that open Senate seat we keep hearing about.

The college anecdote was awesome. That is exactly was statist dogma will lead to.
I watch David Asman on both Fox Business and Fox biz block on Saturday morns, and he says he experienced first-hand the rotten mess of healthcare in England. He said he's also seen the horrible conditions in Cuba. That's where we're headed if we don't stop in now.
My wife Hanna was born and lived in Communist Poland. Her parents still live there. When the communists were in power, we sent packages from Berlin with things like coffee, fruit, etc, all the things that they could not normally get. In turn, they traded those things to doctors and nurses for proper medical care. Glad Obama and the democrats are taking us that way.
I have all of my state and national reps contact pages in my "favorites". Just point, click and write.
Taxes are really just another way to limit freedom. Taxes on "the rich" only insure that the rich will move to a more business friendly place ( like China ) So how do we keep them here? Perhaps we can build a wall…hmmm…
Weird Al Yankovic has been a HUGE influence on my life and humor, so I felt I would have been negligent big time if I didn't mention "UHF".
Not just in Russia and Cuba. But also Central Alberta, one of the most prosperous places on the planet. Socialized medicine at its finest.
"A class-action lawsuit alleges that an Alberta hospital at the centre of a sterilization scandal was negligent in failing to ensure that instruments used on patients were properly cleaned.
The claim alleges the hospital "failed to satisfy the standard of care and breached its duty of care to the patients" by not properly maintaining and sterilizing the equipment. It also alleges the hospital didn't properly sterilize water, sufficiently train staff or warn patients quickly enough — if at all — about the risks they may have been exposed to."
Victoria, after this article, I think your chances of landing a role as the "sitcom airhead" will be greatly increased. Unfortunately, I have no doubt that they will intentionally cast you as the stupid Christian/conservative that ignores science and logic and who quotes the Bible in inappropriate situations. They will never reveal their true motivations at your audition, but instead, will slowly transform your character over time into a mockery of all things conservative.
Be careful not to fall for the trap.
Dear friends of mine from Sweden are planning to move – as they said they left Sweden to get away from Socialism and now it is staring them in the face here~they are leaving….
God Bless you for being the smart, dedicated, true woman of God and a patriot to our country.
I am not yet convinced that we have lost all – we must fight for the Constitution.
Keep up the great work!
Almost Happy Birthday!
We love you Victoria. The truth will always offend in a world whose prince is the father of lies.
If they don't outright attack you I notice that they put SUGGESTIVE ADS on a conservative's blog or article.
Those working for the devil find a way to slime things up somehow. You have to be on the alert these days and squash the evil infiltrations.
Thanks for your thoughtful truth.
In Christ and His Holy Mother…The best to you.
Perfect example, although I think you were trying to make the opposite point through sarcasm. The fact that the government can't manage a tiny portion of the healthcare industry is not a strong argument to support having them take over the management of the entire system.
VJ, if I hadn't lived through all this I would not believe it. I live in suburb of Chicago and told the truth t as many people as possible about Obama. I was written off as a kooky and mean right wing hater. So here we are with an extreme leftist doing his best to bring radical change to our country. I also am in a Bible study, and I also feel like giving up, but I can't. My kids are going to suffer greatly for the foolishness of Obama unless we can alter the course of our political future.
Our Dear Leader may be one of the best tools we have in the fight to bring attention to the lunacy of socialism/big gov't health care etc. He is erecting a house of cards built on lies and cons. AS we get into more and more debt, and more and more of his misguided and dangerous policies fail we have to do our part. We have to vote out the incompetent loons. Short of another revolution, or civil war, neither of which are good choices, we have to exercise our privilege to get rid of these fools.
Keep up the good work. We need more nice people like you.
You have made me laugh for years. Now you make me proud to know who you are.
[...] by sanityinjection on July 17, 2009 This excerpt is from a recent blog by Saturday Night Live alumna (and smoking hot conservative) Victoria [...]
Lovely article, Victoria. It's so encouraging to know that there is at least one brave individual like you staying faithful to the One True God while living in your own Babylon (that would be Hollywood). Congratulations on starting a Bible Study! Bible Study changed my life and outlook so much for the better that I've constantly been in one for the last eight years. Timeless, never-changing wisdom and comfort from our unchanging, loving, almighty God.
As to the rest of your comments — so true. In studying the Bible, I see history repeating itself over and over again. Freedom is a gift from God and was the foundation of the this country. Now this country is turning its back on Him and replacing His ways with man's, and I fear that we'll lose the blessing. I fear that we are the last generation that will know freedom as we head down into the Godless pit of socialism.
Your friend's stories will never be told in our increasingly liberal government-loving press and entertainment industry.
thanks!
Nice… Capitalists get rich by striving to be better than and outperforming competition. Liberals get rich by forcing others to give up their money. In short, by grift.
Oh, please don't apolgize. Really enjoyed your comments and thinking.
Delete me if I've said this already, but is it wrong of me to say I've loved you since you showed your butt with Lea Thompson?
Seriously, though, you were a gem on SNL. I cannot believe you haven't played the dumb blonde in a sitcom yet. There's nothing better than an actress who plays a ditz (sp?) turning out to be bright and smart, like you!
Oh boy, thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who has feelings of hoplessness about the fate of our beautiful country.
One just feels so helpless – will enough people wake up in enough time to undo the damage that Obama and his minions in the House and Senate are doing?
Listening to the news with this latest breandead healthcare scheme, I hear that the majority of Americans don't want this plan, yet they seem hell bent on doing it anyway. What's wrong with this picture?
Nice article! Why not write us a good book to read, this had a feeling like something apocalyptic like "The Day of the Triffids". I always make sure to read your articles. Well, pretty much everyone's here though… Though then again I guess anything apocalyptic these days is sadly just seeming less and less like fiction.
And I've got an idea for the TV role for you. You can play the smart, sexy, Conservative gal who just really stumps and flummoxes the poor nitwit Lib types the sitcoms are so flooded with, when they finally realize what the heck you've been saying… You know, just play yourself! We already love you so your character would be immensely popular!
Thanks for another great article, your writing always cheers me up.
Does anyone out there wish we had a real candidate to support? John McCain? What a GOP joke! Where are the real conservative leaders? Where's the next Jefferson, Adams, or Hancock?
And when the private companies go down so there is no one to shift the shortfall to, how will good medical care be provided?
By definition, as those who boast of "jobs saved" will boast that government health care is the best in the nation.
"…occupied Palestine." (underlining added)
I should have stopped reading right there, I knew nothing good was going to come of it.
Jesus was the Messiah but did not tell people that, and asked his followers who they thought he was.
Obama was crowned the Messiah by his followers, who then started taunting others "What are you going to do about it?"
Slight difference.
It's a heresy to hold a Bible study on any night except Wednesday.
You're obviously in the right place, V.
[...] II: More relentless optimism! This time from Victoria Jackson at Big Hollywood. A trend! At least I got to live at the tail end [...]
(sigh) This was not about Obama.
"It is a Christian's duty to go out and spread the good word by speech and actions."
Yes, but that has to do with how God is reconciling all things to himself through Christ Jesus. It has nothing to do with Democracy or Socialism.
"God gives US rights"
Really? What rights does God give us?
One of my high school teachers had lived in Russia for a few years (after the end of communism there) and occasionally she would give us a taste of the communist mindset. The people who did the best at whatever we had been doing were given no reward, whereas those who were average got something (i.e. candy). In other words, mediocrity was rewarded, not exceptionalism. She did it to make a point to us, and I got that point. Communism gives no reason to attempt to do well; there's no point in doing anything better than average in such a societal/economic system.
"just ask any non-Christian"
So many people think "christian" and "conservative" are synonymous that the church has lost its prophetic voice in society. Christians are identified more with politics and politicians, not with Christ. Makes it kind of difficult to be salt and light to half of the country.
another plus for a fellow Close Personal Friend of AL
Yep, great comment. I haven't come to an answer (almost there, though). But soon, if I am to practice what I preach, I won't be spending much time at all treading through political news (although I have been a political junkie this last year).
"What are we fighting for? In the truest sense Freedom. Who are we fighting for? The rights of mankind."
That's what you're fighting for. From reading the article, it sounded as if Ms. Jackson was ambivalent to this. Or maybe I'm just projecting.
Great article, Victoria!
With regard to the "lowest common denominator" thing in society, please consider that the problem is really not rooted in intelligence or productivity.
The lowest common denominator is a failure of morality in our society.
Liberals seek to replace morality (which is the inculcation of understanding the difference between right and wrong, desirability to do right and appreciation of sanctions for doing wrong) with ETHICS (which teaches people to accept VALUES such as "diversity", "gay rights" and such.)
With respect to morals, understanding that people are not perfect, and that we all fail to live up to higher moral standards, IS THE KEY (a little basic Christianity here for you non-believers) to appreciating that mercy and forgiveness are the cornerstones of civilization. Without an appreciation of the fact that all people fail to be "good" 100% of the time, all we are is a bunch of legalistic jerks. That doesn't mean that there is no punishment; rather, it means that punishments are tempered as warranted by the situation, and should always be administered with an eye towards correcting the person – not beating them down.
Mercy is uplifting. But merciful people are also charitable and afraid of consequences. They shy away from corruption and cheating more often because they are afraid of consequences.
With regard to ethics, anything that society declares as "not bad" must therefore be good and, perhaps, even desirable. If it is bad, well, ok. It has a punishment. Take your punishment and that's that.
Ethics boils down to this: how big of a price are you willing to pay for your pleasure? If you get caught, that is?
And what happens when something becomes "not bad"? It's hard to stop the argument of desirability.
What is so desirable about being gay? If everyone adopts that point of view, human extinction is just a few generations away.
What is so desirable about "diversity" for the sake of "diversity"? Ignorance is no more useful in blacks than it is in whites, latinos, asians, etc. But we give people a pass (i.e., Sotomayor's Ricci decision) for not being good enough because their past life experience didn't equip them to be smart enough to do what someone else could!
What is so wonderful about smoking weed? Sure, it gets you buzzed – but it is also carcinogenic (smoked or otherwise) and we all certainly know that ingesting carcinogens is something to be ERADICATED – much like tobacco.
Victoria, you're hitting the nail squarely. Use your platform of prestige to sound the alarm. Millions of us ordinary people will never have the opportunity you are blessed to hold in your hand.
And don't worry about people taking shots at you. There's a lot of folks out here who will back you up, and our "underground" is big.
Christians should be allied with the Kingdom of God, not a political party. But if they vote, then they should vote in accordance with God's laws. Quite simple, really.
"Yet Jesus didn't try to implement change from the top down."
Jesus directly confronted the most prominent and influential Jewish leaders of his time. He very bluntly exposed their wickedness and hypocrisy. That's why they killed him, remember? His silence in front of Herod does not define His whole ministry. Let's read the whole passage. Note that Jesus defied Herod by not giving him what he wanted:
Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him.
And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing.
And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently.
And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.
Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.
Right on, VJ!

Keep up the good fight,
I believe we are seeing the re-awakening of America.
It's important to let people know out thoughts and how we feel, that is why I so appreciate your honesty.
Otherwise, it's easy to feel that you are the only one left that is sane.
Have a good week and God Bless!
"Really? What rights does God give us? "
A right to life, for starters. Were it not by that, you wouldn't be here!
FYI, that's in the preamble of the Declaration of Independence.
If you want British style health care, just pray you don't get Alzheimer's, my husband died from it. In GB you won't get the meds available here, and ladies, pray you get get breast cancer–and I'll bet you know someone who does have it, because in GB you won't get the proper meds for it that we get here.
To paraphrase Michelle Obama, for the first time in my life I'm afraid to be an American.
There was another Tea Party today, it is the 17th of July hassle your representatives.
The leadership of the Jews were largely accommodationists who tried to maintain what power they still had by working with the oppressors, while the people cried out to be freed from tyranny. Note how conservatives, and even some independents and libertarians, view the leadership of the Republican Party.
He allowed and even encouraged disobedience against the leadership by pointing out their lack of commonsense, such as when they complained about his followers stripping off some grains of wheat because they were hungry, and pointing out the fallacy of not saving an animal in trouble, because it was the Sabbath. We are critical of the leadership for not acting when needs are critical, despite them saying "it is not the time."
He was mocked and derided for his humble beginnings, even by those of his people desperate for a savior who declared that, despite his wisdom and accomplishments, he was too common to be the one. We note how Sarah Palin is treated even within the party.
For the taxes, he said to give unto Caesar what is Caesar's, since his face was on their money. I look at my money, I see the symbols of America. I will give to America as she has given to me, my fair share. He did not say anyone, even the poor, should be exempt, thus all should pay their share, which should be noted was not a flat amount in total as those who had more naturally paid more. Nor did he say the government should take care of the poor, and encouraged charity among all as the solution.
Jesus also recognized a situation could be so abhorrent that immediate action was required, even violence, as with the moneychangers in the temple. In Luke 22:36 he ordered the buying of swords, the most powerful personal weapon available, for he knew a dark time was coming. Yet, the fight was not that night, so why the order? From this may be inferred he knew his followers would have to fight to survive, and we are in the dark time until he comes again. Thus I choose to believe our risen savior not only recognizes there are times requiring urgent action, even violence, even revolution, but understands and approves of exactly what the 2nd Amendment means.
Jesus was far from silent in his opposition, but rather than be loud and attention-grabbing he lead by example and taught what was right. He did not "try to implement change from the top down" since he knew that was pointless, those in power do not want to believe they are doing anything wrong. So he built support for change from the bottom, a grassroots effort, but while many would give blind devotion for one who would deal out payback, instead he educated the people to see to their own needs and help each other, and so they would know what is really best for the people as a government.
I think we conservatives are doing an excellent job of following "the Christian way."
I know, but offhand your post looked like it could be one of those liberal "And you call yourselves Christians!?" comments with "Obama is a better Christian that you!" implied, so I put up a "just in case" reply while thinking out a serious one.
Dear, Baby Jesus!
Thank you for our still-smoking-hot-at-fifty Vicky J.
Victoria made an aside about Jesus' lineage. She referenced Leviticus (which is in the Old Testament), which outlines how ancient Hebrews turned from God and bad times befell them.
But beyond that, most of her article was simply recounting the coming effects of Obama's attempted implementation of his elitist socialist utopian fantasies on America. The fight is not as Christians, the fight is as free men, endowed by our creator with rights to life, to liberty and to the pursuit of happiness. The right to life does not infer the right to a free lunch; you have the liberty to work, struggle and produce and to own what you've worked for, your efforts are not owned by the government; and from the fruit of your labor you have the right to pursue you vision of happines, not to be restricted to what the Fabian Socialists running Washington decide that they will allow you.
What are we fighting for? In the truest sense Freedom. Who are we fighting for? The rights of mankind. A Christian should be opposed to a political movement that at it's core which wishes to enslave men to it's earthly vision of utopia.
If you think that's bad, when people decide that they'd rather not pay for their insurance, they'll sign up for Obama care. But insurance companies give you pricing on policies that depend on many policy holders. If they lose 20% of their clients, guess what? Your insurance is going to cost 40% more. Then more people will drop private insurance and the spiral of death continues.
Once you do sign up for national healthcare, you're stuck for ever. Also, The Mayo Clinics of the world have days that are numbered. Once this National Healthcare passes, Government is not going to pay for top quality and the great health care facilities will close one by one. Government will call the shots and make the rules. Government can run at a loss to compete with the private sector. Just look at the post office and Fed Ex. Post office is running a $2 billion loss for multiple years and they are undercutting Fed Ex in prices.
What can you expect from national healthcare?
My grandmother fell and hit her head leaving a giant bloody bubble on her head. Now, in Greece, Healthcare is free because it's Government run. I don't know too many Government workers other than politicians that get paid well and in Greece it's no exception. So, when the ambulance arrived, he refused to take my grandmother to the hospital unless they paid $500. So, they drove her to the hospital and they couldn't get in the door unless they paid the receptionist. They couldn't get in to see a doctor unless they bribed the nurse and the Doctor couldn't do anything for her unless they bribed the Doctor.
All this, constitutes as free healthcare. Good luck and make sure you ask the ambulance driver to stop at the cash station before you get to the hospital.
They had one here too- about 4 dirtbags got hassled. Was sorry I couldn't make it (I still have a job, had to be there), so I emailed the lowlife scumsuckers instead.
What a great teaching aid! That kind of lesson sticks with you. Statists can't have the average citizen do well or be extraordinary; the individual must succumb to the group, as is done in China, N Korea, etc. Individuals are dangerous. They have dangerous ideas about "freedom", and "rights".
Great post!
Keep in the fight, Victoria. They cannot win — unless we quit. He will give us strength.
It's true that following Christ is apart from politics. However, since we live in a democratic republic, we are all responsible for the actions of those we elect. We ourselves are, in a sense, the government, and are therefor morally obligated to participate in the discussion and debate over what that government does. This includes, of course, any attempt by said government to suppress our freedom to worship God as we believe appropriate.
"Give to Ceasar what is Ceasar's and to God what is God's." In a Roman province that just meant pay your taxes and obey the law. In America it also means you pay attention and vote. It doesn't define you as a Christian, it's just one of those things you do.
You know, like laundry. I'm fairly confident my relationship with God isn't defined by the cleanliness of my socks but I wash them anyway.
all you bible thumpers are wacko. you are all so scared that our society is changing that you hang on to aesop's fables (bible) and have imaginary friends like jesus. evolution is REAL. We ALL evolve. stop holding on to the past and shake your paranoia.
if there is a god, i doubt he or she is against all of your fellow men and women getting medical help even if they can't afford it. and if god's against poor people getting healthy, then god's a jerk.
live and let live and look out for each other instead of trying to target people you don't deem worthy. pretty judgemental, huh? nothing in this world will ever be even. healthy people who excercise and eat well have to subsidize obese people and smokers. is that fair? of course not, but should we lock them out of coverage?
stop being hypocrites and worry about yourselves
LET'S MARCH ON WASHINGTON Sept. 12, 2009. Emails are going out now about it. I'LL BE THERE.
C'MON EVERYONE. WE ARE ALL BROKE, BUT WE HAVE TO DO IT.
Started an account just to be able to comment to this. Loved this post and so edified to learn of another Hollywood conservative. Gives one hope.
Anyway, I lived in St. Petersburg Russia in '94. I taught English there to college students & they would try to explain the culture to me. Instead of our American attitude of trying to keep up with each other, they believed in knocking each other down to the lowest level. They had this story about 2 neighbors. If one got a cow, instead of working hard to get a cow himself, the other one would just shoot his neighbor's cow.
One of my American colleagues got sick there and we visited her in the hospital. I wish I could post the pictures–the conditions were horrendous. They would give us these bags to place over our shoes "for sanitation"–to keep the dirt from our shoes from being dragged in. The thing is, the bags had big holes in them. I think there's a great metaphor in that for socialized medicine. Give everyone coverage, yet on the other end, they'll be draining out our money in taxes (& being generally inefficient to boot). One big joke.
Exactly. 48 pages of personal attacks at the Huffington Post is something you should brag about. To me, that is a badge of honor.
This reminds me of an old joke about Communist Russia:
A man in Russia saves up his money to by a car. Once he had enough, he called the commissar of cars to place his order.
The commissar told him "You car will be delivered in exactly ten years from today."
The man replied, "Will the car be delivered in the morning or the afternoon?"
The commissar responded "What difference does it make, ten years from now, whether the the car is delivered in the morning or the afternoon!?!"
The man said "Well, the plumber is coming in the morning."

Thank you – insightful and funny, the best combo to make a strong point. Fight the good fight.
HEADS UP! Victoria is going to be on with John Zieglar in about 20 minutes!!
http://www.1260.am/programming/listen/
This will be a headline in about three years….and it will be in the United States….. Socialized medicine, will be the DEATH SENTENCE of our HEALTHCARE SYSTEM….I lived overseas for a few years and had to deal with a NATIONAL health care system and I would travel to the United States for ANY thing to be done… it is pathetic, that the OBAMA NATION wants this pushed through and we will HAVE NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS!!!
Plus, Victoria… you where attacked by the LIB at PUFFY HO???? big deal, they are all living at home with there parents sucking on there NESQUICK threw a FUN straw….. BIG DEAL, they are LIB's BIG DEAL!!!!
Yup. The only answer will be rationing. A lot of people are making hay about Obama's comment that maybe older people shouldn't want tubes and needles, and that they should accept death as a part of life. People (such as Laura Ingraham) are syaing "No one will like it when Obama shuffles your granny off to the Hospice". I was doing some research recently…guess what… a lot of countries in Europe don't have Hospices, they are too expensive. You go home to die and your family takes care of you as best they can.
Amen and Amen!
Can you spot the guys without self respect!
Another interesting read, Victoria, thank you! You may want to buy yourself a John MacArthur (Grace Community Church in the valley) Study Bible , answers your questions while you're studying. That pastor is a genius (IMHO).
Also, being an Armenian (Dad's side of family massacred in Turkey), and Russian (Communist oppression made them flee to freedom here), I can safely say as a first generation American that whatever we can do (tea parties, trying to contact our congressmen, Senators..I highlight the word, 'trying,' never could speak to one person ever!!), to stop this socialist regime led by the Shyster-and-Thief needs to be done now!
Conservative revelations from entertainers just grab our attention, we are amazed when one of them steps into the light, and you have certainly done that! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, I admire you for it!
Yet looking back, how many of us wish we could trade just these six short months of Der Leader for four years of McCain's "bipartisanship?" With Palin as an added bonus?

The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time
Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong
You got to read between the lines
Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can
Make it through another day
Make it worth the price we pay
The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive
I do my best to do my part
Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart
Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby
I am counting on you

Perhaps I'm reading you wrong, but are you endorsing government action to eradicate cigarette smoking? That's not very conservative.
Who is giving the thumbs-down to JohnnyH on this? His comments were thought-provoking and civil.
There are a bunch of things in there you have to read a few times to get the slant of the sarcasm right, but…
I think it says liberals want to ban harmful things with carcinogens like tobacco, but they want weed which is carcinogenic. Standard lib hypocrisy.
You might want to ask yourself the real reason her post upset you. She made some interesting, valid points. I'm sure it wasn't the truth of what she pointed out that bothered you most, was it? Was it any Christian daring to speak out and apply their faith in areas that overlap our collective public life? If she had championed same-sex marriage, or single motherhood, or any other celebrity partyline cause, would you have nodded approvingly and moved on? It's a sincere question–I don't know you're other issues, but I do know the black-list savaging a celebrity gets when they dare step off the Hollywood reservation.
You have a valid point. I agree many people think "christian" and "conservative" are synonymous, but it's not unanimous. Of course from the time of Christ on, people have used His name to justify the evil they do, as well as the good. I agree with Reagan who said (paraphrasing) "what's more important than having God on our side is that we are on His side."
Christians are under orders not to confuse politics and faith. But the opposite error–being so heavenly minded that you are of no earthly good–brings to mind Burke's quote that the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. In these modern secular times that is exactly what is constantly demanded of Christians (like Victoria J) who dare polk their heads above their fox holes and express an opinion. Doesn't matter whether you're right or wrong, if you're a Christian shut up! You can see what happens when Christians meekly surrender their role in public life (Nazi German, the USSR, etc.), vs. when they stand on philosophical and biblical principles (USA 1776).
I added a disclaimer for a reason, and I'm glad I did. After another reading, I believe you're right. Thank you.
Sort of like I noticed above, it looks like we a high degree of troll sensitivity right now, there are many fingers on the triggers looking for the slightest indication something is off. We have less of the attention seekers and more posting subtle insults.
Several days ago, I noticed some odd postings, different names but they looked like they were written following the same rules. I read them several times and still could not decide if they were actually insults or some sort of mocking ironic sarcasm. Thankfully they gave up the approach when people voted them up and replied in agreement.
LOL. A confession: I am conservative, always have been, and don't think I have ever voted for a Democrat mainly because of the abortion issue (although I did vote for Perot in 1992 – I know, I know).
Don't mean to sound like a smart *ss, but God didn't write the Declaration of Independence.
God doesn't give us any rights, and if fact, expects us to give up our rights. This is what I see in the life of Jesus.
Thank You Victoria, I too approach the big "5-0" with trepidation, not for me personally, but for our country. As I've said before, suddenly up is down, front is back and our country is being turned inside out and upside down. Congratulations on your "bucket list" I also have moved down that list, I'm collecting a few university degrees as my main task. I salute you on your Bible study and will happily watch any sitcom that is fortunate enough to have you as a cast member. Like alot of the posters here, I fondly remember you in your role as "Teri" in "UHF"…I rewatched it carefully the other night to see if there were any gratutitous attempts to exploit your "physical assets"…there were none. Even with you and "Weird Al" in a dating relationship, you lived in SEPERATE HOMES! What a REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT! Most of us here appeciate a beautiful woman as you are Victoria, but "flashing skin" totally out of context of the movie would have been unneccessary in "UHF". "Weird "Al is a good guy and I know you have pricipals. I forgot how much I enjoyed "UHF" and Micheal Richards and the entire cast, even ol' super lib Fran Drescher.
I voted for Perot that first time too! Sure the charts looked corny, but I was out of college and making my own money, I wanted someone with business smarts who would make sure my taxes were put to good use.
48 pages? What is wrong with people? Have we all gone insane? Somebody wake me up…..
Two things.
One, universal healthcare isn't going to provide better medical help for the poor than our current system does; it will worsen the situation, especially for the poor. Conservative concerns about universal healthcare aren't based in selfishness or callousness to the needy. Scroll down BH and watch Steven Crowder's ObamaCare video. Or talk to anyone who's lived in a country under such a system.
Two, looking out for each other is precisely what we're trying to do here. If Christians were to "worry about themselves" instead of reaching out to others in love, then we would be hypocrites. If we were to give our support to a healthcare system that we know will ultimately harm people instead of helping them (see above), then we would be hypocrites. I may be going out on a limb here, but in my experience when people say "live and let live" they usually mean "stop trying to tell others what they should believe." If this is the case, you have proven yourself a hypocrite by calling us names, insulting our faith, and telling us to "stop holding on to the past."
Given that you can't tell us any solid details about the nature of God, perhaps you might consider holding off on dismissing Jesus as a figment of the imagination out of a book of fables until you can prove that He is precisely that?
"You can see what happens when Christians meekly surrender their role in public life (Nazi German, the USSR, etc.),…"
Good post, and I appreciate your thoughts. This is exactly what I'm wrestling with. Was Bonhoeffer justified in plotting to kill Hitler? Would I have done anything differently? Can we speak against oppression as the people of God and not as a political entity?
You've misunderstood my initial post – I'm not upset. Ms. Jackson does make interesting and valid points, and I enjoy reading her articles. It is just that this time, she frames her article with a Bible study, and ends with a sigh "I'll stay in the fight." What's the reason for that?
The right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, to vote, freedom. These are all good things. Unfortunately, I can't find anything in the Bible to support that these are God given. Could you help me here?
"God does not like criticism and expects respect." Umm, you've lost me here. Criticism to who and in what heart? Respect to who and what for? And finally, do you criticize liberals or do you respect them?
"…are therefor morally obligated to participate in the discussion and debate over what that government does."
I want to agree with this. But then I think of guys like Dobson and Warren, and think that they have crossed into the political realm (or movie star realm), possessing worldly wealth and influence that Jesus rejected.
More than anything, Jesus preached about the coming Kingdom – when God's grace breaks into a person's heart. Followers of Christ are to do likewise as they mediate God's presence. When Christians align with a political party, the main message gets diminished. Therefore, Christians can participate in the debate, but do so without losing sight of the main message.
I'm shut out by the moderators. I appreciated everyone's comments – wish I could have replied more.
Thanks for bringing in the entire context – it brings out my point. Christian leaders seem to play into the hands of politicians. Even guys like Dobson and Warren have crossed a line into the political realm (or movie star realm) – they possess wealth and influence that Jesus rejected during his time on earth. And non-Christians notice this.
Jesus' harshest words were to the religious leaders of the day because they were arrogant towards God and also because they oppressed the people instead of mediating God's presence. The issue, I think, was spiritual, not political.
Thank you for standing up for what is right. I enjoy your writing.
Please run for the Senate.
Thanks for the encouragement. I'm 74 and worry about my kids and grandkids. Although discouraged, I also pledge not to give up… at least while able to breathe.
On the contrary, he gave us many rights.
The right to life, he gave us this gift and it is ours to do with as we will. He did let us know what the consequences and rewards brought about by our choices are, and I have learned to be astute enough to recognize the "hints" given in this life. And man, do some of them hurt.
The right to liberty, expressed as many freedoms which are part of the right to life. We are free to worship as we choose, to assemble, to say what we want, etc.
The right to the pursuit of happiness. There are many things we can do that can make us happy. Sure, individuals may have limitations, obstacles to overcome, perhaps there are even certain exact things one will be denied. But not everything is dull and dreary, if you cannot find something to enjoy then you are not trying hard enough.
We even have the right to vote. What, you may say, that is not in the Bible. But then it was known as voting with your feet. If you do not like something, move. You could always find somewhere you could fit in, or to simply be alone. Also, in a fashion, the people voted. A population could decide to be wicked or righteous, and as a whole they could suffer the consequences when not enough demanded the doing of what is right.
Now, what God expects us to give up is not rights, but certain freedoms and certain expressions of freedoms. God does not like criticism and expects respect, so do not play with "freedom of speech" that way. You are not to take what is not yours, even though technically you can, you are not even to want the actual thing someone else has. Etc.
Go back to your musings, and see if the things you think you have identified as one thing are really better considered as something else. I hope this helps your deliberations.
Enjoyed you on the John Ziegler show, and hope to hear more of your original songs on the radio.
That's just crazy.
"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are inalienable rights endowed by The Creator. I will be shot DEAD before I allow a government to decide if I may ive or not, if I may determine my own fate and my own path toward happiness or not. God gave us minds, reason and FREE WILL. We are to use those gifts wisely and honor our Creator by doing so.
What "rights" do you think God is "expect(ing" us to give up?
EXCELLENT post. Well done.
If those rights DON'T come from our Creator, then where do they come from? Is someone here on Earth GIVING them to us? That makes us chattel from birth, doesn't it?
God expects our love and respect for His Creation, both the object and the act. Criticism is not for us to give God, because we cannot create as He does. We are not wise enough to criticise God.
As far as liberals, go, I tend to criticize them as a group but respect them as individuals.
Part 1 (although the thread is stale by now)
“The leadership of the Jews were largely accommodationists who tried to maintain what power they still had by working with the oppressors, while the people cried out to be freed from tyranny.”
I dunno. It’s hard to find an equivalent of the Pharisee today – they were like rock stars/movie stars/politicians/famous athletes all rolled into one. Nothing came close in the Jewish society – all boys strived to be Pharisees. They had plenty of power, Roman occupation or no. They were able to roll Pilate.
”He was mocked and derided for his humble beginnings, even by those of his people desperate for a savior who declared that, despite his wisdom and accomplishments, he was too common to be the one. We note how Sarah Palin is treated even within the party.”
Jesus was mocked more for being a Galilean – it was a regional thing, not an issue of wealth. And comparing Palin to Jesus is like comparing Obama to Jesus – please don’t compare a politician to Jesus.
Garland, TX?
Both post were great. The fact that Huff and Puff post called you unhinged is proof that they have no counter to the arguments you made in your post.
Even though we don't share the same zeal in our religious beliefs (stopped going to church when the Steelers started winning on Sundays in the 70's) we hold the same values. That is America.
How many signs were there in the past two decades that sent up a red flag about where this country was headed? Too many to list but I found one.
RED INK. How many parallels can be expounded from these two rather innocent three-letter words? Red ink and debt. Red the color of blood and those unborn who never had the chance to spill it on there own fruition. Ink and the power it holds. The constitution was written in ink so those futures generations were able to read EXACTLY what they meant when it was written.
And of course to our beloved teachers who used red ink to let us know that we needed to do better in their class assignments. Red ink became such an agonizing symbol that it somehow managed to capture the psyche of America's youth.
Yes. Red Ink. Not the failure of the teacher to capture the students attention or recognize that that student should perhaps go back one grade. Not the failure of the student to work harder or the parents failure to cope with the fact that Junior was in over his head and should go back one grade.
It was the RED INK. So what happened? They changed the color of the ink to purple. Don't know if you remember that.
Well. Who do they blame now? Red ink is gone. Bush is gone. The money is gone. Ahhhh. But that's okay. Money is after all just ink. And we have plenty of ink. Print more money. Teachers can pretend they are teaching. Parents can pretend they are parenting. And Junior…what time is American Idol on?
Yeah, it was a cast of millions. With a death toll in the millions too.
Can't say I blame them. I mean, you vote with your feet to get out of a totalitarian cesspit just to have your adopted homeland go the same route. That's gotta bite.
It's all about the priorities, of course.
As for god…"A man without god, is like a fish without a bicycle."
I see it differently…
“As for God, a man who rejects Him becomes like a fish and no longer needs a bicycle.
When we refuse to acknowledge our Creator, our experience of life is reduced to the likes of a fish in a muddy pond. We can look up and see the sun and the sky and perhaps some grass and trees on the bank, but we see it through murky water in wavy distorted lines. We lose the capacity to experience the life for which we were created.
We were made to breathe the air and ride our bicycle through forests and deserts and valleys and mountains. We were meant to experience the snow and rain and the sun and the rainbow. We were meant to smell the smell of a delicious Animal-Style Double-Double as it gets lovingly passed through the window of our car at lunch time!
But alas, when we suppress the truth about God in our desperate efforts to ease our conscience of the nagging sense of our accountability to Him, we also trade the full life in Him that He has created us to enjoy for a life of darting among the reeds, fearfully avoiding predators, protecting our square inch of sand, and dining on flies and worms.
But when a man turns to God in repentance and faith in His Son, God restores his lungs and legs and teaches him to ride!
Amazing Grace! How Sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!
I once was legless, but now I ride. Had gills, but now I breathe!
Our rights come either from our Creator or our fellow creatures–there is no third option. If the former, they can't justly be taken from us (as our Founders all believed); if from man, then those in power can grant or remove them at will (as the French Revolutionaries believed). That's why we've had one government since our revolution while the French…
You won't find the right to vote in the Bible because it is not Roberts Rules of Order or a "how to set up and run your own government" handbook. It provides the eternal, universal, true and trustworthy principles that work in whatever culture and time we live in. The leaders who have been guided and bound by its precepts are generally acknowledged to be the best history has produced. (I know that's a sweeping generalization, but for some other debate.)
Appreciate you asking questions to learn, not just rhetorically.
As someone who has fought on both the conservative side, and the Christian side, in the public arena–if you have to ask, I can only assume you have not. That you have never experienced the vicious hatred the secular Left vomits at anyone who does what VJ did. I'm not saying I'm a better conservative or Christian than you, but a lot of your positions suggest a lack of firsthand experience, though a good heart and head. You are misinformed about a number of key items you've brought up or replied to, but I do appreciate your passionate and civil level of debate.
Victoria,
Don't forget Matt. 5:11 & James 1:2-4 & Gal. 6:9. Thanks for the good article.
Your sister in Christ,
Laura
yep!
Yeah she's got to be, she has a "career" in showbiz (which means she is probably smarter than you too). Notice I didn't attack her personally, I stayed on subject. Next time I request you do the same.

Consrvativ_KDH,
No need to apologize, I enjoyed your post along with Victoria's article. Both intelligent and well worth the length. Write as amny long posts as you want, as far as I'm concerned.
SranH,The term "jackals" as applied to liberals is an insult to real jackals everywhere.
I stand corrected!
