If NBC Really Wanted to Save the Planet They’d Go Out of Business
by Tim SlagleI just saw this AP article, where California is again discussing how big of a television set you can own. This time, they are pitching a limit on how bright your television set can be. I believe is an attempt to curb greenhouse emissions, by forcing television consumers to turn out the lights when watching television and sit closer to the set.

This is a new proposal, concocted after California Legislators failed to regulate the size of their televisions. That one didn’t sit too well in the land that coined the phrase “Size Does Matter.” I would suggest that the more intelligent legislation would be to ration inches. For instance my (not to brag) 110″ television, would be the same as some people who have a 12″ set in every room of the house.
But I digress. Buried in the article is this tidbit of information: Apparently television watching contributes to 10% of the entire American electrical requirement. Holy Moly. Ten percent is more than the entire Cap and Trade Bill expects to cut over the next hundred years.
Which leads me to my proposal. If people in Hollywood REALLY wanted to go green, they should just quit making TV shows, and get a real job. All of them. Writers, Directors, and Producers as well. (It wouldn’t be an issue for tech people, they’re quite familiar with work already.) Without television programming, TV would become completely unwatchable.
Which isn’t a new idea in Hollywood. Networks have already tried other ways to get people to stop watching Television. Last year’s “Kath and Kim” and the more recent “Parks and Recreation” both have been completely unsuccessful in their attempts to get people to turn off the TV before “The Office” came on.
Why should average Americans, the ones who actually provide necessities of life like food and shelter, be forced to pay more for their energy, when there is a solution right in front of us all? You want the rich to pay their fair share? Television stars make more for a single episode than some of us earn in our entire lives. If Al Gore’s apocalyptic predictions are true, certainly the leisure class of Hollywood must do their part to help save the Polar Bears.
It’s time for all of you out in Hollywood to show us all your acting abilities, and act like Americans. Your motivation is Saving the Planet.
Stop making the Television that is about to destroy us all.

"Without television programming, TV would become completely unwatchable." which would be different how, exactly, from the status quo? i mean really, how much more offensive would a blank screen be if the current programming isn't doing the trick?
Oooo, good, the CA legislature must have fixed that pesky budget shortfall and is moving on to more important things.
Living in CA is not easy. The CA legislation passed Assembly Bill 17 and as of November 1, 2009 started taking out an additional 10% from our paychecks. Naturally, it is not a new tax but a "loan" that they will pay back. If you want a lesson in frustration, try calling all our representatives in CA to voice an opinion about what they are doing in DC. It is not that all Californians are so laid back we don't care, it is that the people that represent us will NOT listen to us. Waiting till 2010 is taking a lifetime.

If NBC Really Wanted to Save the Planet They’d Go Out of Business
Based on their recent decisions, I thought this was the plan all along?
*blinks innocently*
I thought sitting close to the TV will ruin your eyes. Is California prepared to pay for all the glasses, contact lenses and corrective surgery that will be required in the near future?
No problem – Obamacare will pick up that tab, not CA.
CA is a joke and will be like a third world country in less than 20 years. Taxation, anti-growth policies, tree huggers and the like will serve to destroy the state. We have already lost 500,000 residents to neighboring business friendly states, all we have left is parasites who live off the rest of us. I will me moving my family out next year. Come to Nevada, low taxes, cheap property, and a lot less liberals!!!!!
Sadly, we also have idiot residents who voted for a $10 billion bullet train that would go from LA to SF…despite the fact that the state is already bleeding red ink, and despite the fact that the bill HAD NO PARTICULARS ABOUT HOW THE MONEY WOULD BE SPENT.
Have you actually watched Parks & Recreation this season? It's hilarious, a complete 180 from it's first season. Kath & Kim though, yeah, was terrible.

Aren't they already trying to do that with their current programming?
To be honest, I wouldn't miss the Hollywood crowd at all. I probably haven't watched more than a weeks worth of TV in the past 10 years and it's been longer than that since I went to a movie.
Did anyone else see the ad on NBC (I forget if it was for GE or NBC, but no matter) that said at the end of the ad something to the tune of "turn off your TV"? I laughed and said "with pleasure!" and promptly hit the off button.
Uh, question. Is that a huge cloth condom on top of the banister in the above photo?

You beat me to the punch line!
How about: I thought TV was doing that through the programs they broadcast?
No, there's much more important jobs than the ones they were elected to do.
They will not rest till every snail darter and every tiny smelt enjoy the same rights was We The People. Not while there are still people out there who are too dumb to realize they should be eating free range lettuce rather than Big Macs. Not while there is one citizen who doesn't bring a recycled hemp bag to the store!
Sleep well Californians, your legislature is on it!
Well, you can't expect the hip, happening elites from the metropolises to waste their precious time on the streets with the unwashed masses, no can you?
I do, football!
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Unfunded mandates are favorites of politicians.
Here is an idea how in one fell swoop we can rid the country of the intelligence black hole that is the California government as well as our massive debt to China. We sell California, and all registered Dems since they like living as slaves to the state anyway, to China in exchange for wiping out the debt. They get all the left-tard celebs, enviro-nuts and the house I own there, of course I expect to be able to sell the house to some lucky yuppie Chinese couple.
It's broke. Sell it to Texas so it can become profitable again.
Take a trip to upstate NY and you can see what's coming.
Between Albany and Washington, they've decimated upstate over the last 50 years. It's like a ghost town.
Then who would you have to validate how unworthy you are?
such as deadly potato chips:

a$$holes…
and yet they keep sending Harry Reid back to D.C. hmmm…
The thing I like about NBC is they are not bias any more than any other network — or any less. I am so glad to see the left wing networks being recognized as democrat support groups and newspapers going out of business; maybe then news will really be fair and balanced.
they pump out the most pulluted air, and it isn't out their mouth!
I'm sure the Liberal hypocrite that lives up the street from me will take care of that…
Worthy come back!
Touche!
I've got almost every TV in the universe beat. I have no TV's in my house at all… but I do have my Sat system piped into my Power Mac G5. That puppy – well, this puppy, I guess, since I'm posting from it right now – draws 250 watts of Gaia-ravaging power just idling. Seriously, I put my feet in front of it in the winter to keep them warm.
So, I'm surfing, watching HBO, and creating my own personal carbon crater all at the same time.
That reminds me: I gotta get that Quadro 4500 video card so that I can run TWO 30" Cinema HD Displays at the same time. HA!
Once again, the stupidity of Californians shines through. Either they are stupid for supporting their naive legislative efforts. Or, they are stupid for continuing to put lawmakers in their state legislature who continue to vote for these idiotic special interest causes that only a small but very vocal minority support. Either way, they are continuosly creating their own problems and do nothing about it.
Actually, not all of us are stupid (okay I voted for Ahnold – SORRY!). We are plagued, as many states are, with a rigged gerrymandering system whereby it ensures that the same dolts keep getting voted into office. There is also this thing where they hop from position to position within the City of L.A., or the County of L.A. up to the Statehouse, etc. etc.
Since I got back into voting 8 years ago, and specifically for Conservative candidates, I have tried my best to vote the bums out, but it has done no good. And I don't know if it ever will.
I feel like the whole thing is rigged.
I tried to watch a couple episodes of "The Office" a couple of years ago, but did not find it funny at all, and have not watched an episode since. Not even when I've got a glimpse of a promo did I find it funny, and usually the promos take the funny parts.
As Chance the Gardener was fond of saying, "I like to watch TV." I have a nice hdtv I worked hard for, and if the California nuckleheads decide I can't have it any more, or have to pay taxes on it, then I'll have to move back to Texas. Which means less money for them.
Here is a person who KNOWS how to have a GOOD time….!
Carbon crater- love it.
Uhh… no. The good citizens of Nevada send him back. Unless Albany was moved to Nevada when the folks in New York weren't looking…

The Democrat Party has destroyed the jewel that California was just a few decades ago. Barbara "Call Me Senator, Don't Call Me Ma'am" Boxer, Linda "I Love Castro" Richardson, Pete "I Wouldn't Waste My Urine by Peeing on You" Stark, Queen Nancy "I Loved Dissension When Bush Was in Office" Pelosi… these are but a few of California's political problems. Vote all the Democrats and RINOs out, and California may have a fighting chance to pull out of the financial hell hole it is in.
Cutting off all taxpayer goodies to illegal aliens would cut the deficit by at least one-third, maybe half.
Now that you've put that in perspective, what was I thinking? I'd like to see all our representatives at least have a town hall meeting. Yea, that's gonna happen with all the unwashed masses. I know because I called them all and asked them when and where they will be having their meetings. Not ONE had a town hall meeting.
Freaking Jerry Brown, how he could continue the sham of a lawsuit with a straight face is beyond me. Plus the chip co.'s paid penalties… thats it CA, keep busting companies and amybe you can shrink that deficit. Jeez, it seems like the CA legislature is filled with retarded monkeys (I'm looking at you Steinberg, Bass, etc.)
Now Mr. Nolte, a TV accounts for 10% of the electrical consumption in the U. S.? I think the AP needs to put 3 or 4 people on fact checking that. Surly if a relatively short political book can get 11 fact checkers, a blog is worthy of 3 or 4. The AP didn't get any federal stimulus money did they? I digress, but wait a minute, you are making this proposal to the elite Hollywood crowd, when did they ever need a real fact to do anything or to have an opinion. Mr. Nolte, I stand corrected, as always you are brilliant in your analysis and thanks for your thoughts.
That one made me laugh out loud when I read the Voter's Guide. I will be VERY surprised if I see a bullet train in my lifetime.
uhm, Ed, you forgot the fairy shrimp we had to protect. If Californians don't watch out for the critters, who will, even at the cost of the farmers' crops (America's food providers) and jobs? Those are soooo not important, dude.
you mean like detroit?
An even simpler answer to several dilemmas: Require all programming to stop at 10 p.m. and the tv's to be disconnected (as they draw energy even when turned off). This will require the stations to be more selective about their programming, i.e. if it ain't worth watching, replace it with a late-night show ….which would mean that there would be no late-night shows – Conan draws less than the ShamWow commercials, Letterman would last about as long as Kelsey Grammar's show, etc News could be squeezed into the two minutes before each program. Just think, the OJ carchase in two minutes; balloon boy in 1.5 minutes with 30 seconds to show the "concern" of the newscasters.
Ahhh, the days of staring at the static snow on the screen will be a fond memory for today's youth, too. You, as a good parent, can tell them they are watching the remnants of the Big Bang, thus making it educational.
Yeah, it's grown on me.
Want to know how GE products save energy? Read this.
I purcahsed a GE fridge. Great reviews. It was my 3rd GE fridge. I live in the California desert. The fridge comes with an ice maker. It is not a luxury in the desert with small children. Well this wonder new "energy saving" and "energy effecient" piece of crap makes ice all right. When it works it makes up to 20 ice cubes per 24 hours. It works when it wants which averages about 3 days per week. Now they can claim they are energy effecient but I wast gas and wear and tear on my car and pollute the atmosphere by having to go to the store to buy ice 2 times a week. Ain't energy effeciency grand.
NEVER NEVER NEVER buy a GE applicance. They meet energy effeciency by cutting down on performance. They are liars and cheats.
If Califonia wants to pass feel good laws that help destroy their economy by reducing jobs and their standard of living then they should foot the bills for it. California should get minimal Federal money for their pet eviro projects that only cut jobs and increase taxes. Its their problem and they have to live with it. they wanted it now live with it. I pay enough taxes to my foolish State tax hounds.
ROFL, If Californias got rid of the Illegals then who would vote Democratic?
LOL – Too funny!
haha you just have to watch Top Chef to learn never to buy a GE appliance, at least for the kitchen. They seem to have problems with the refridgeration or the ovens at least once a season and of course the editor's cut into show the logo really big whenever someone is complaining about something not working. IT is a highlight of the show for many of us viewers.
