Will Ferrell and Co. Answer the NEA Call, Shill for ObamaCare
by Tim SlagleA couple weeks ago I wondered aloud where Hollywood was in the health care debate. And almost on command, this video appeared. It looks like the NEA’s call for artists to promote health care initiatives has been heard by some comedy artists.
Hollywood superstar Will Ferrell is surrounded by eight “celebrities” in a satirical defense of the health insurance companies.
And I use the term “celebrities” loosely. One is the only recognizable character from the cult series “Heroes,” another is a star of a popular cable series that was recognized at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, another is a star of a cable series that nobody ever watches, one is from Comedy Central’s Reno 911, another is his best friend, one is the star of the hit movie franchise “Scooby-Doo,” and to give the clip credibility, two of the “celebrities” actually play doctors on TV. I will give a prize to anyone who can name all eight without using Google®.
Is this the best Hollywood can come up with? Other than Ferrell, most of these people don’t even have a Q score high enough to make it on “Dancing with the Stars,” or “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here!”
So where are the A-listers? It seems like most of them have been trying to rebuild their careers. People who were stars in the early part of this century saw their earnings take a nose dive as they learned that a lot of conservatives watch TV and buy movie tickets, CDs, and DVDs.
As for the video, it seems a little hypocritical that Will Ferrell is complaining about insurance company profits since he made scads of money just for wearing tights and doing pratfalls. Meanwhile, health insurance companies do a lot of good for people by providing life saving health care most people would never be able to afford otherwise. They also cite unfounded statistics like 80% of America supports a “public plan” and that insurance companies have denied claims based on spelling errors.
Oh yeah, and it’s supposed to be funny. The clip is posted on the site “Funny or Die”… In the immortal words of Patrick Henry, “Give Me Death!”

OK, I could only watch the first 40 seconds of that crap.
They seem really confused about the difference between insurance regulation and health care reform, but apparently, so is our President.
Someone please tell me where they got that "80% of the American public supports the public option"…I noted at the end that the video (yes, I took a deep breath and watched the whole thing…) was sponsored by MoveOn. Which should tell us all we need to know about these people.
I am happy to say I can only identify about 4 of them and one does upset me. Olivia Wilde – not because of her but because shes' on my fave TV show, House.
I beat you! I made it to 50 seconds before I threw up a little…..
Even if this video was actually good, its still a gutless attempt by Ferrell and his pals to preen about their liberal credentials and support for Obama without really doing anything. A 2:10, it's a video that's never going to show up on TV' it's only going to be seen on YouTube or other Internet sites, while only snippets show up on news channels or entertainment shows. That way, Will and the gang can show their love for ObamaCare® without ever having to really wade into the debate and explain at length why they think it's so great, and risk making fools of themselves in the process (I may think 99 percent of what Janene Garafalo says is looney, but at least she puts herself out there for her causes. Will Ferrell endorsing ObamaCare® like this carries about as much weight as when those well-known laundy experts Arthur Godfrey and Eddie Albert were peddling detergent on TV back in the early 70s).
hollywood jesters are making my brain bleed. yes they are!
nothing to celebrate here folks….try personalities
Buh-bye Will. You were funny on SNL, in fact hilarious and you peaked with "Ricky Bobby" but now, you have become the very characters you once parodied for us all to laugh at and so…we now laugh at you.

Interesting.
Just found a health insurance company with a market capitalization of $6.7 million. Since Mr. Farrell is such an expert in running such companies, I suggest he take one-third of his earning from "Bewitched" and buy the company. He could then offer life-time, no limit coverage plans without regard to existing conditions, at "affordable" rates. Set it up just the way he thinks right. Let's see just how long it takes before he manages to run it into bankruptcy.
You make an interesting point, maybe the video was satire? Poking fun at the I Pledge videos?
Still love Ricky Bobby. Although pretty certain it wasn't a real stretch for Ferrell.
I'm guessing they are looking at polls that asked people if they would like "free" health care. Of course, a lot of people are all for free health care; heck, I would be if it were truly free. The problem with that number is that most people are smart enough to realize that even if you don't pay directly out of pocket for your health care, you will pay in other ways. When you ask questions relating "free" health care to increased costs in other ways, the support for it plummets.
I would guess they took that free care number and are stretching it to mean support for a public option which we are told will be "free" even though many of us know it won't be.
i believe it was Mark Twain who said, "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."
a successful pollster always asks his clients what he'd like the results to be, before designing the poll, and especially before drafting the questions.
Tom,
Confused doesn't even begin to cover our President's ideas about insurance. He sees "rich" companies and thinks they should just give. Price product according to risk? You have got to be kidding. Set maximum exposure to protect other customers and shareholders? Unfair!
Why, we have the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation to take care of those pension funds who invested "safely" in "health insurance companies". And thus we will have more people dependent on Big Brother, oops, the government, for their very existence.
You have hit the nail exactly on the head. The people pushing this monstrosity are counting on the fact that most people don't really understand what insurance is.
An insurance policy is a legally binding contract, and if the insurer doesn't live up to it, you drag their butts into court.
What happens when the insurance agency is already the federal government? Where do you go then?
I didn't watch any of it, but I wonder if they'll give up their private doctors and opt for the public option. These poor celebrities who are so mistreated they have to wall in their palatial estates and put up surveillance cameras, hire body guards, get fruit baskets if they are force to appear on talk shows. How do they do it? Those brave souls.
Problem is, a significant number of Americans think the government can provide it for free. We're approaching a very dangerous point in American politics. When we reach the point where 50% + 1 voters don't pay federal taxes, all hell is going to break lose.
Big Hollywood/BigGovernment creatives should find several "middle managers" at Humana, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Healthcare, etc willing to put their faces & names on a video which would go something like this:
"Hi Will Ferrell, I'm Jane Smith and I've worked at Humana as a Claims Manager for 15 years. I earn in one year what you made for a few skits in your early years at SNL. There are hundreds more Jane Smiths in my building. Will you pay for our healthcare premiums, our life insurance policies, and our mortgage payments after you and your cronies have worked to shut down our company and put many thousands of middle class Americans out on the street?"
"As for the video, it seems a little hypocritical that Will Ferrell is complaining about insurance company profits since he made scads of money just for wearing tights and doing pratfalls."
What does making money as an actor have to do with insurance company profits?
Has Ferrell denied insurance claims of anyone? Have people died because Ferrell told them he wouldn't pay for their operation?
"So where are the A-listers?"
Uh,Ferrell is an "A-lister". Ferrell vehicles have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars. Last year's 'Step Brothers' made over $100 million. Even a piece of garbage like 'Land of the Lost' made $49 million.
The real question is "why aren't the right wing Hollywood A-listers posting at 'Big Hollywood'? Where's Bruce Willis? Where's Stallone? When the biggest names you can get here are has-beens like Orson Bean,Jon Voight & Adam Baldwin, you're in trouble. Could it be that even conservatives like Willis or Stallone know that Andrew "Potato Day" Breitbart is a raving lunatic? Don't give me that "they're afraid of losing work because of their politics" bs either.
Once again, I have my Breitbot-to-English translator machine here to interpret all the other comments:
"This video makes us feel frustrated, because we wish the right had a star as big as Ferrell who was willing to shill for insurance companies or attack Obama. Victoria Jackson doesn't cut it."
Funny or Die got a mysterious sum of funding recently … like $3mil… when I saw the announcement I thought that I wouldn't be surprised if it came from Soros…
can't sue the government unless they give you permission
can't sue the government unless they give you permission
yeah that is going to be a problem
Would you really even want to try to have an in depth debate with Will Farrell on health care? My guess is his eyes would glaze over during the opening remarks. By 5 minutes he'd be doing fart jokes.
[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Michael Chavez and Debra of Sardar. Debra of Sardar said: Hypocrite??? yes! » Will Ferrell and Co. Answer the NEA Call, Shill for ObamaCare http://ow.ly/r41h #tcot #tlot #icon #912 #iamthemob [...]
he is on my avoid it list, not because of his politics, but because he isn't funny.
His SNL stuff was good untill he had to rely on nudity. Around the lime he left the show that was all he had, running around in his tightie whities.
That's a great point and why tort reform will HAVE to happen for the universal healthcare pipedream to work. In Europe, you can't sue for malpractice. You receive a minor settlement to cover very basic costs. Otherwise, their system would go bankrupt handling all of the shoddy medical treatments. Europe's finest students no longer go into medicine because it is like working for the post office. It is easier to make money and be treated better elsewhere, so healthcare quality trends downward.
For Americans, and our inability to be patient or live with mediocrity, Obama's health reform will be a FUBAR of epic proportions. Americans simply won't stand for it. There isn't enough of our grandchildren's money available today to pay for universal healthcare and keep Americans satisfied with the service.
sorry oily but if will farrell is an a lister then hollywood is in worse shape than imagined….
Same here as far as Olivia Wilde is concerned. Although House is one of my favorite shows, I never liked her on it and never could really put a finger on what it was I did not like about her. Now it's becoming very clear.
Farrel has more money than talent. If he is a real believer in Obama's redistributive religion, let him be the first to give up his wealth
I think it qualifies as all kinds of 'moron' not just 'oxy.'
you must be the pivot man in the One's circle jerk
This week's episode of The Office did its bit for the cause.
Warehouse manager Darryl is explaining to HR rep Toby how he broke his ankle. Dwight, the caricature authority-loving right winger, is eavesdropping.
Dwight: How did a ladder end up on top of you if you fell off of it?
Darryl: This doesn’t concern you man, you need to walk away.
Dwight: Oh I’m sorry, I thought this was a free country. I didn’t know we were in communist Sweden.
Darryl: If we were living in Sweden I wouldn’t have to worry about this because we’d have universal healthcare.
Dwight: Um… that’s….
Darryl: Be quiet.
[Close up of Dwight to show how frustrated he is that he “lost the argument“]
Not that they're listening, but MoveOn.now … please.
"What does making money as an actor have to do with insurance company profits?"
On the other hand what makes Will Ferrell an expert on insurance claims?
WHAT IS WITH THE PUSH TO GET AT OUR CHILDREN?
After Americans sent a loud and clear message to Obama, "HANDS OFF OUR KIDS!", he changed his indoctrination speach and gave it anyway. Now it seems the government is increasing the pressure to get at our children.

"Is this the best Hollywood can come up with? Other than Ferrell, most of these people don’t even have a Q score high enough to make it on “Dancing with the Stars,”

Uh, okay, Tim- just a sampling of the cast's resumes:
Olivia Wilde
Jon Hamm
Masi Oka
Jordana Spiro
-Compared to your hot gigs:
Jokers, Cedar Falls, IA.
Courtney's Comedy Club, Fargo/Moorhead, MN
Skyline Comedy Cafe, Appleton, WI
Are you billed with that hot conservative comedy duo, Crocs & Stretch Pants?
"And I use the term “celebrities” loosely. "
The feeling is mutual, Tim.
I found their infomercial quite amateurish and boring. The hypocracy is the only thing entertaining about it.
It's 'funny' but not "Ha Ha" funny.
Here's a parody of the Will Ferrell PSA: http://optoons.blogspot.com/2009/09/celebrities-r...
Yes, 'Land of the Lost' took in $49 milion. Unfortunately, it cost over $100 million to produce. It's a bomb. Can Ferrell be sued for malpractice?
he addressed individual arguments with a reasoned analysis not befitting this whiny post, and your counterargument is to make a vulgar and nonsensical ad hominem attack. well played, sir.
or you, for that matter? or anyone besides the insurance executives who have been bankrupting people without compunction?
Yes – "oxy" as in "lack of" – to the brain!
Since, as illustrated by Farrell's video, sarcasm is now the very pinnacle of sophisticated Hollywood humour, I posted a message at pjtv asking (well, begging) Steven Crowder to make a video in a similar vein, this time defending the poor Climate Change cultists from the reality of flat or declining temperatures, a lull in hurricane activity and growing skepticism toward their claims. Next stop, Iowahawk!
How does an insurance company bankrupt someone?
The reason you don't see more hollywood types come out for ObamaCare is that A) they know they'll be in the jackpot too once they get too expensive to care for and all their millions won't be able to give them the treatment they need to live. Or B) they know if they back this increasingly unpopular president, they do so at risk of losing half of their audience.
So the lobotomy WAS successful. Good for you.
I can't remember the last time I laughed at a Will Ferrell film.
FYI: attacking the messenger doesn't work anymore. We've read "Rules for Radicals," too.
Can I sue him to get my $12 back?
You're being too hard on the Oily Taint Troll. He knows not that he isn't that bright. And is told what to say from his daily updates from the DailyKos or HuffPo.
Can I sue him to get my $12 back?
Not to mention the two hours of my life I pissed away by going to this mess.
So it's more like $12.50
Good, they can be the most notable A-list celebrities out there and I'd still think the ad is a piece of crap.
I love how these dipsh!t Hollywood types are talking like they know the first damn thing about politics and healthcare reform.
This is actually pretty disappointing. I cannot recall anywhere in this entire healthcare debate where Insurance executives were ever even part of the equation. Farrell is such a funny guy, I wish he would just shut his mouth and stick to his craft that he is actually good at. When he does stuff like this video, he just loses points on the respect meter.
Why is anyone surprised-does any remember his last film? He needs to keep his me out there somehow and this is the method he uses to keep it out.

I found the encyclopedia entry for this video:
"Hollywood Lib Syndrome" (also known as Maher's Disease)*
A sordid mental disorder in which the sufferers claim and presuppose to have an innate intellect about all political issues simply because they identify as a left-leaning person. The disease does not discriminate and reaches across all educational levels as celebrities who have not even attended college can be sufferers of this disease as well. They're known to be very hostile towards anyone with conservative leanings and ponder frequently why the rest of the world can't evolve into the cesspool that is Hollywood.
*Can also be applicable to non-celebrities, most notably college students, professors, and community organizers
(Related Articles: hypocrisy and Obama is Hip and that is all that Matters Syndrome)
I'm currently working on his biography.
"Will Ferrell: Dumbass"
Interesting the hypocrisy. Didn’t Michael Jackson have a zoo and an amusement park in his backyard? Don’t actors John Travolta and Tom Cruise have private jets. What about their friends like Donatella Versace, David Bechham, and Simon Cowell? It’s been reported that they too have private jets.
And I like the fact that Ferrell bad-mouths insurance executive pay while he is commanding $20 million a movie. Maybe we should let them know what we think about the diminishing quality and content coming out of Hollywood. Why aren’t they going after Big Pharma which is making so much more money yet not curing anything?
This is nothing more than a disingenuous NEA/White House propaganda piece, which thanks to BigHollywood.com we now know there are growing problems between the two.
You suggesting they have a political mind of their own is a bit suspect. While you make absolute sense
in your assessment of the situation you assume they have a firm set of values as you do.
How Obamacare will effect them they may or may not be considered privately it does not effect their
outwardly show of agreement with the left. The folks they work for, the folks they hang around with,
the parties they attend are all influences in their outwardly display of unity with their brethren.
As long as movies make money, regardless that its only the nonpolitical movies that do, they will
not politically rock any leftist boats. Some left thinking "stars" may be reluctant to be more visable on behalf of
the left but they will do so if directed. You may be correct about their consideration for half their audience
but I don't think it is part of the equation at this time.
And I didn't even recognize the Heroes person. Don't watch network t.v. or hyped hollywood/emmy programs.
They charge people for a service. Therefore they are evil!
No more Will Ferrel movies for me!
I happen to own an official "Talladega Nights" Wilson leather jacket.
What? You can't change the rules now! Slagle's entire post was nothing but attacks on the messengers!
If anyone is equating popularity = intelligence, look no further than your VP candidate, the one-woman word-salad who's idea of leadership is quitting her job. That's the kind of ammo you use to shoot at each others' faces.
2 minutes for the fart jokes……….by 5 minutes he would be running around in his underwear screaming.
I was trying to be charitable, but you're probably right.
You're completely stupid. Just repeat that over and over and it may, just may sink in.
Oh there, there. I'll PayPal you some Kleenex.
BOYCOTT!
You're so nice.
It's not an "attack" so much as the truth!
You're so nice. Stupid, but nice.
Cheri Oteri, for the record…
WTF? Jacko was too busy gassing himself to make ANY political statements, so how is he in this equation?
Hey, at least Arthur and Eddie were ENTERTAINING in their commercials (and how hard is it to be an "expert" in laundry, anyway ;? )…
Ferrell and comedic talent. An oxymoron if you ask me.
YES PLEASE…GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!!!

Besides these chumpy pinkos, there's something so inherently wrong with government funding art. Art implies free so to accept money from a govt is contradictory.
I've often wondered how "Hollywood superstar Will Ferrell" doesn't qualify as an oxymoron.
But doesn't Darryl, the guy who wants universal health care, turn out to be a liar in the end? Dwight is the one who thought he was lying about the injury and he turns out to be correct.
The government should keep its grimy hands off private healthcare. They should be allowed to rescind policies they sold to people. It's a private contract, none of the governments business. Insurance companies should cap the amount of money they payout. Those people are going to die anyway. How will the company make money for their shareholders if they are paying for sick people. Everyone in America can be rich. If you're not it's your own fault. You don't deserve any help. You should just die and make way for more productive people.
We can all count on Paul_D to put us all in our place. He actually thinks that celebrity's popularity = intelligence. That's why Dems make fun of Republican celebrities. Because ours aren't as HIP as theirs. If that's the baseline you use for the integrity or character of liberals or the Democrat party (who's on the cover of People magazine), you're giving us more ammo. And you prove that the Democrat party is nothing more than a marketing institution. Which is the only reason Obama was elected. Because the Dem's did a hell of job marketing a guy with ZERO practical experience to the presidency. Boooyah!
Will Ferrell is not funny. He obviously WORKS toward funny but he seems just "off" in every single attempt. I think the only time I ever laughed at his work was when he was coupled with Sherri O'Terri (spelled?) on SNL in those cheerleader skits.
Ferrell works best in comedy when and only when he's working "off" a comedian, like when he appeared with Jim Carey on SNL. Otherwise, not funny. And it just sinks my interest in anything else from Ferrell to see his awful politics revealed, as if his Bush imitations weren't bad enough.
You suggesting they have a political mind of their own is a bit suspect. While you make absolute sense

some mention was made about the proper reponse to this artistic endeavor, and similar efforts of longer duration… don't watch. I've gotten so good at it, that I don't know any of these people. Think they care?
Yeah, I noticed that as well.
However, on The Office, it was funny (unlike the Ferrell clip which just seemed juvenile).

80% for the public option.
The explanation for this seems to be that the exact question is. "…do you think the public option is important?" So if you answer, "I think it will be the end of our health care, bankrupt the treasury, and I am very concerned." They put you down as a yes. That's where the 80% number comes from

Given that American economic success was built on conservative principles along with steam power and the telegraph (which rendered homing birds obsolete, by the by), why should he be ashamed of these 19th Century inventions?
Facts don't matter. In the mind of the effin demopig the ends justify the means because they are wrongly convinced that they are morally superior. So superior they are allowed to tell lie after lie. Seems like a conflict if you ask me.
Run it into bankruptcy and no one gets help. Kinda sounds like what Obama and Peeelosi has planned for America.
You see when the government denies someone SS disability or Medicare/Medicaide coverage then they are blameless for you must understand that it is ok for government to have absolutely no reguard for the 100% profits that they wasted and did ABOSOLUTELY nothing to earn. They did not do an EFFIN single days work for the money that they took from the taxpayer. Insurance companies would love to have a business plan that would allow them to make money without having to work for it. I am soo tired of the stupid lies that the democrats/progressives spew on a daily basis. If the effin government was soo good at providing health care then no one should be dying from any lack of assistance provided by insurance companies. SED
That goes for the majority of hollyweird and the nutjobs at huffpoop.
