ObamaCare: Where is Hollywood?
by Tim SlagleWith the health care debate getting loud and furious, you have to wonder why Hollywood has been so remarkably silent. Maybe the Celeberati don’t care whether citizens have health care, or maybe they are happy with the generous coverage they get from SAG and AFTRA, and believe the President who tells them they will get to keep their current coverage.
It can’t be accidental. Certainly there must be one celebutard who has an opinion on the debate. I long for a wonderful bit of wisdom from Sheryl Crow, perhaps a suggestion to save costs and the environment by washing and re-using band-aids.
Where is Barbra Streisand? Barbra has been noticeably absent from all political debate lately. Probably not coincidentally, she just released a new album. Perhaps her handlers advised Babs to tone it down; that her target audience is composed primarily of senior sitizens now, a demographic that has a tendency to skew conservative and worry greatly about their health care. (The profit motivation is an awesome force, strong enough to restrain torrents of wisdom from the Great Barbra Streisand.)
Even Mike Farrell, a frequent advocate of government health care, has been silent lately. Mike is a fortunate celebrity, whose name would be unrecognizable to anybody, if Wayne Rogers hadn’t stormed off the set of M*A*S*H 35 years ago. Farrell is still making an incredible living based on those eight years of work he did more than a quarter century ago; he gets a little bit of change every time you watch a re-run of M*A*S*H.
He is one of those who believes in a “right” to healthcare. The flaw in his thinking is that health care does not exist without the labor of others, and you have no “right” to the labor of others. I wonder if Mike Farrell believes that access to free reruns of M*A*S*H is a basic human right?
For instance, the people who developed the Viagra which helps Mike Farrell enjoy his M*A*S*H residuals, spent many long hours in a laboratory developing that medicine. I would suggest they worked more hours than Mike spent in his location trailer while his show was being filmed. The creators of medicine are just as entitled to residuals as the creators of television.
Is it related to need? A critic might suggest that medicine should be free since people need medicine to live, whereas television is only a want. But to me, that is more reason why it should be paid for. People don’t like to do things for free.
My Grandma used to give me five bucks every time I cut her lawn. I felt guilty, and tried to refuse it because after all she was my Grandma. “You did me a big favor,” she insisted, “At least let me buy you a little beer.” (She had to know I was only sixteen, right?) Eventually I relented.
What my Grandma understood quite well was that a task unpaid for stops getting done. Sure enough, I would be over her house every Saturday, picking up a little beer money by mowing her lawn. I was young and energetic back then, and I probably could have found many different ways to spend those Saturday afternoons. If it was just for the love of Grandma I might have put the mow off for a couple of days. But because I wanted a twelve-pack of Carling Black Label, I was pushing a lawnmower around her yard every single Saturday afternoon in the Summer.
It is the same with medicine. The only reason why we have wonderful things like botox, chemical peels, laparoscopic bariatric surgery, liposuction, collagen injections, implants, steroids, anti-virals, and the vast array of anti-depressants that keep actors young, slim, shiny, and smiling on the red carpet is because people in the medical industry wanted a little extra beer money on Saturday night. Maybe actors have figured this out, and oppose the President on this issue for that very reason.
A comic friend once suggested that the second amendment should be viewed in its historical context, that the right to bear arms should only apply to the right to own the high technology of the 18th Century: flintlocks, muskets and blunderbusses. I suggest that if the Constitution suggests that Americans have a right to health care, that it also be taken in historical context. You have the right to bleedings, leaches and arsenic therapy; and unlimited access to the barber of your choice. Surgery will be paid for, but anesthesia is extra.
Still interested, Mike?

Is Mike Ferrell still alive? I thought he was dead.

Excellent point. I'm tired of hearing people say that the government should pay for their health care. Its not the government that will end up paying – its your neighbors, and its people like you and me.
Actually, they're out there, Edie Falco for one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-89Is9Bl2ZA
Oh man, that last paragraph is hilarious!
Wait, when did Wayne Rogers storm off the set? I never heard why he left.
I think Hollywood celebutards may finally be starting to realize they usually hurt whatever cause they "endorse."
Excellent. As a SAG/AFTRA member, all too often I have to "hear it" while on set from the loons…and while My Voight is so often quoted by me, I think, on this issue, the lack of "quotes" from the leftist "elite" will speak volumes more than even Mr Voight can say.
Is it Holywood or reality? President Obama at his news conference on Wednesday September 9, 2009, willannounce that he has put foreword his own health care plan entitled: HEALTH CARE- HOW TO SERVE AMERICANS. See it here, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/search/label/...
Great analogy on the 2nd A and 18th century technology, Tim.
If that analogy were applied to the 1st A as well, look at all the mis-spelled words we'd have to deal with, confufing esses for effs, as well as the stilted language actors would find in their scripts.
Might make it even tougher for libs to engage in civil discourse, though.
I think Babs is staying mum because she heard that Zippy's trying to create a czar position for shooting Nancy Pelosi from the left (with a camera.. just clarifying).
And Mike Farrell may be selected as another spokesman for Hussein.. that is when Gibbs' sarcasm and Barry's coldness wear too thin on America. They'll call up old Mike and he'll pour on his trademark liberal earnestness, thus convincing the people that Zippy's only doing what's best for America. Laughter will be stifled when he bats those sensitive eyes at them.. Ohh.. there's that shiver.
site admin must be having a slow day re comments to approve………
Great read! Maybe they don't want to be subjected to yet another tax on the rich? After all, I doubt they feel obligated paying for anyone else's healthcare.
You are the only other commentator I have heard support my point that health care is a service provided by a human being…
I always present it this way: How can health care be an intrinsic or basic human right when it is a service provided by one human (the doctor) to another human (the patient). It is the doctor's basic human right to either provide or not provide the service as he/she chooses. It is not the patient's basic human right to take the service from the doctor if the doctor does not wish to provide it. If the patient thinks that the doctor should be compelled or forced to provide the service against their will, then that is the basic theory behind rape, or at least serfdom.
And to drill deeper: if there were no doctors (as there may not be if we bludgeon them all out of the system) then the only basic human right to healthcare lies within the individual… to diagnose themselves and treat themselves healthfully.
stop mocking Sheryl Crow. i'm still using the same single square as last month.
i think i'll frame it and donate it to The Obama NEA project, couldn't hurt.
I ctually think he simply looks like he is dead.
"Maybe the Celeberati don’t care whether citizens have health care..
Yeah..Where are they…Where did the gorgeous idiots go?"
ANSWER: they are probably getting drunk, using drugs, or having sex with random individuals…that's what they do in their natural habitat.
Yes..they will support their Master.
Let's send Mike Farell to North Korea—forever.
Oh, no! The Obamster is going to make a Czar to replace Nancy!
Truth—he is creating the socialist cabinet. Beware!
Next step is the military. Then, dictatorship.
Donate? You can apply for funding for another square, or two!

This is my new facebook status – with proper accreditation, of course!
CELEBUTARD!!!! Oh Man, that's rich!!!! How drole!! How witty!! CELEBUTARD!!!!! I'm gonna start using that all the time.
If we all typed "an@lysis" and syncronized our comments we could keep them hopping for awhile.
Do-do do-do, do-do do-do…
Wonder what the reaction will be from those who sign up after the lawyers finish translating it. Can they CGI Rod Serling endorsing it?
+1
Nah, Barry will not-really unofficially send a Clinton to pick him up. Maybe Hillary will do it this time, provided she's "on vacation" and just stopping by while in the neighborhood.
He is, that's a picture of his re-animated corpse!
There's one thing a celebutard CANNOT change…
The get old, and they want the very best…something that they can't access if Barry and the libtards have their way…
Babs and Mikey, Moore the Blimp, the rest of the usual suspects, as well as their families, will all need the Doc one day. And they just may want someone with a few more brain cells than MJ's family physician.

Health care should- and could be a no-brainer on reform…
But it isn't- and it's because it's red herring for cradle to grave socialism. ergo, the hysteria from the left on the 'Public Option'. Believe us when we say a 'trigger' is still a public option and the government will not compete fairly while they wipe out the insurance companies.
Make it portable, cover pre-existing conditions, allow interstate competition and open free clinics in the inner city.
How long did that take?
You do realize if the celebrities would speak up now with the focus on health care, people might want then to financially support free clinics in poor downtown LA neighborhoods rather than third-world countries. And they feel safer doing photo-ops in third-world countries.

Excellent post, Tim. You never disappoint. Your final paragraph was FABULOUS.
Like most on the Left, I think he is just brain dead.
Health care as a right? Do I have the right not to have to pay for the rights of others? Why do so many think that their "rights" are contingent upon money being forceably taken from someone else? We live in an odd time, parasites everywhere. How about a right to a cruise? It does not seem fair to me that the only ones that are able to take their families on a Disney cruise are the weatlhy, or those fortunate enough to scrimp and save some money from their labors. I think someone should fork over some dough so that i can excerise my 2nd amendment rights and buy a firearm for the upcoming storm.
Farrell's "career", barely breathing since MASH went off the air, was officially pronounced dead right after the show "Providence" went off the air. He played a veterinarian, a really, really sensitive veterinarian.
In other news, he is married to Shelley Fabares, whose career was tragically killed when "Coach" was cancelled.
Troll, it's droll.
Celebutard is almost as funny as republidouche and conservadope
When any actor is ready to put in writing that they are willing to give up their SAG benefits, and not use their money to go to private clinics in Switzerland, etc., then they can speak in favor of Obamacare, and not a minute before.
I dare any one of them to put it into an enforceable contract.
Well, if health care is a human right – and ol' Mike Farrell is doin' so damn well with this MASH residuals, I wonder if the rich SOB is gonna pay my doctor bills if I list him as the responsible party?
Mike, what do you have to say about this?
(crickets….
chirping….
sporadically….)
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Sumbych.

Liberals = laxatives.
Ironic that you dismiss Mike Farrell as a has-been, known only for MASH, when you have Burt Prelutsky blogging here!

Bravo, but mainly because I despise Mike Farrell. I hated his smarmy mustache-wearing character on MASH, I hate his scream-based 'rationale' for getting rid of the death penalty … I just hate everything about him. The perfect symbol of a rich elitist trying to tell everyone how to run the world.
Oh wow! Capital letters really provide some passion to that comment of yours. And those multiple exclamation points are lovely indicators of feigned indignation!
You my good man, are Dissent Commenter of the Week! Your prize is an expired Cash for Clunkers coupon. Enjoy!
Yep, Todd, that's the guy.
Great episode, saw it last during the 4th of July marathon on SciFi, or is it SyFy now.
What do you have against Burt Prelutsky?
Is there anyone out there voting for this that will actually be covered by it??
Be sure and frame it with something brown and recycled. And I'm pretty sure you can get a tax credit, or maybe a carbon credit from the Church of Gore, in return!
Just by the way Farrell doesn't ern any royalty money from me. Every time that cr show comes on I change channels. I cannot abide those snide adolescents abusing our soldiers. As for their (celebutards') treatment of the North Koreans… anybody besides me love Team America, World Police?
Try it!
Healthcare is a privledge to me, not a right.
People are under the illusion that you can buy goods so out of your pricing range and then expect someone to take care of your necessities. I like earning my rewards, not having my wants given to me by the government.
They're not that smart to realize no one cares what they say. Look at how George Clooney's influence got his dad elected. Oh that's right, he didn't.
I think Babs is staying mum because she heard that Zippy's trying to create a czar position that will ensure that Nancy Pelosi is shot from the left (with a camera.. just clarifying).

Wasn't Mike Farrell the other husband on 'Bewitched'? No that was Dick Sargent. Who is Mike Farrell again? Oh, he's that extreme lefty who thinks Mumia (the cop killer) is a swell guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, holding a gun and shooting cops in the head. That's the guy!
Mike Farrell is an embarassment to this nation, but what would any one expect from a man who pals around with Commissar Ed "Flatus" Asner, eh? I wish Farrell would just dry up and blow away, but the blowhard loves the sound of his own voice too much for that I reckon. As it stands now, Farrell's more associated with "Tookie" Williams than with his M*A*S*H or Providence days in most thinking adult minds. Oh, what an accomplishment!
"HEALTH CARE- HOW TO SERVE AMERICANS." It's a cookbook! It's a cookbook!
Ewww… Carling Black Label man that’s some nasty suds but cheap. I have always wondered why Hollywood stars haven’t made a mass exodus from Malibu to Castro’s paradise where they could cut sugarcane, and get “free” healthcare. I know hypocrisy is a liberal virtue. I would pay to be in line with Barbara Streisand in a DMV type line to get “free” healthcare, oh… that’s right she would get special care, silly me. Tim, don’t hold your breath buddy.
There's alot of shrapnel in the air right now. The Hollywood twits will come out when it's safe . Career first. Let's not forget many a man has been zapped by a ricochet
Thancks!!!!!!
Thanks!!!!!!!
Geez…that picture of Farrell looks like he's about ready for Obama's end-of-life counseling. Come to think on it, MASH" was quite some time ago.

The reason Hollywood is so quiet now is because a D is running things. All is well in their world, nothing disturbs the beachs of Malibu, their Mercedes seem to run a bit smoother, Whole Foods has a much better selection, the effects of botox seem to last much longer than they did before. Obama could be marching people off to camps, executing people out behind the White House, but still, Hollywood would be silent. Bush farts in the Rose Garden and they take to the streets, petition the UN, and run crying to Chavez.
I aim to please.
actually, i've now read and heard quite a few people make this point. a "right" to healthcare presupposes that people have a "right" to the time and money of others.
the "right" of free speech does not obligate the taxpayers to buy you a printing press or radio station, etc., nor does it obligate anyone in the business of building printing presses, satellites, etc., to donate their time and products to your cause.
the "right" to bear arms does not obligate the taxpayers to buy your weaponry of choice, nor does it obligate anyone in the arms business to donate their time and products to support your right.
same with the right to religion, etc., but a "right" to healthcare, by its very nature, necessarily requires someone else's expense to actually realize/exercise it.
That's perfect Tom!
You mean Burt has some other life before writing insightful, interesting, and funny columns? That guy is a gem.
EEEEWWWWW!!!!!
Nobody has more contempt for a degenerate Stalinist like Farrell, but he is a good actor and had a good 5 – 6 year run on an NBC show called "Providence" in the 90s…he played a vet, father to the woman who is on CSI/NY now…
Why should I care about another's health? Look out for you and yours and leave others be.
Uh, are they ignoring the boycott of Whole Foods? Wouldn't be surprised.
I hope the Government never tell me how I should save for the future and take money out of my paycheck, err wait, what they do. Then I hope they never replace the local militia and form national army, err wait, what they do, then I hope they never ………
I've actually been to Castro's paradise. We smuggled Tylenol and Lactaid through Cuban customs as a "housewarming gift" because the common people can't get luxuries like that. We were picked up at the airport by the husband of a Cuban medical doctor who was driving a 15-year-old Renault that you wouldn't have paid 500 bucks for. They waited on a list for six months before they got that car. Their other vehicle was a bicycle. Cuban healthcare is nearly non-existant. But everyone has the same coverage.
We should also keep in mind that in the dreaded 'public option' comes into play, AFTRA, SAG and all the other unions will drop ALL the working actors and only cover the uber rich like Tom Hanks and his pals.
You should be ashamed that you're using any paper at all. I've been using a rock for about three years now.
Watched the Edie Falco video. Why doesn't she pay for health care?
Memo to far-left celebrities: Stick to acting. You add nothing but your emotions to it. Move to Cuba, North Korea, or Venezuela & see if the leaders of those countries will let you keep your millions, or if you'll have to, as Obama once said, spread your wealth around!!
