The Left’s Privilege of Language

I was hanging out at a bar with a couple of lefties after a show one night talking politics. One lefty was a good friend’s husband, the other was his brother-in-law. I tried to keep the discussion civil, but the liquor prevented such from happening. The topic turned to welfare and my lefty friends started using a word that frankly shocked me. Since it is nearly impossible to tell this story without referring to the word, and in the interest of keeping this a family page, I will substitute a different word: the name of a beloved character from “Winnie the Pooh”…
That adorable rascal Tigger.
The brother-in-law started, “You people don’t care about the suffering, don’t care about the weak and under-privileged, you don’t give a rat’s ass what happens to them, because to you and your ilk they’re all just a bunch of Tiggers!”
I was shocked. Even more shocked was the black gentleman sitting at the bar who suddenly took a keen interest in the conversation. After all, this is a word so repulsive it can cut through the static of even the noisiest bar. My friends had their backs to him, so it was impossible for them to see they had attracted an audience.
Never being one to avoid a conflict, I feigned ignorance. “They’re just a bunch of what?”
My friend was happy to clarify, “Tiggers. You think they’re Tiggers. You don’t care about them because they’re just all Tiggers.”
Here were two long-time liberals demonstrating to me the privilege of language accorded only to those on the correct side of the aisle. I asked again, “They’re WHAT?”
The husband spoke, “TIGGERS TIGGERS TIGGERS! How plain do I have to say it for you? T-I-double GUH- ER!!!”
At this point the eavesdropping stranger could remain silent no longer, “Uh, excuse me…”
My liberal friends turned around, and I cannot find the words to describe the shade of red their faces took as their bravado sunk under the table. The moment of silence that followed, seemed to last an eternity. The husband broke, “Um, you don’t understand what’s going on here,” he pointed into my chest and indicted, “You see, he’s a REPUBLICAN!”
The gentleman pretended like he wasn’t listening, so when the husband rushed over to apologize, he had to say the word again, right to his face. It was a very embarrassing moment, almost too painful to watch. On the up side, the gentleman ended up getting a free drink out of the deal, as the husband was eager to put it behind him.
The puzzle of that night has befuddled my mind to this very day. Apparently, my political leanings are supposed to be more offensive than the horrible word those two shouted in a crowded public space. That I might have supported George W. Bush gave them the entitlement to scream such a vulgarity in a crowded public space and should also make it okay to this stranger simply because they’re liberals and have the right.
Watch Bill Maher. He LOVES to make jokes about race, jokes that would force many of us to apologize, and perhaps lose our jobs. And this is why I disagree with Tom Shilue about Janeane Garofalo being funny. I think she’s a snotty opportunist who wouldn’t be talking like that if there was any chance for her to do a second season of “24.” (Look for Janis Gold’s horrible death around hour 23, which is about two hours longer than her talk radio career lasted.) However, I think Shillue has a very valid point about how the Liberals view us.
Rather than skewering the messenger, we should be talking about how to change that opinion.

The kind of exception to the language you provide, drives me silly. The only two, true racist I know are both Democrats and union members. They use the "Tigger" word constantly, however they always look over their shoulder, doing it. I realize that was not completely the line of your story, however I felt it appropriate.
Leftists only celebrate diversity when it's within their own ideological framework, and even then much of it is only lip service, as they betray in situations such as you described and others. I'm thinking specifically about how the left treats conservative blacks such as Condoleezza Rice, and Clarence Thomas, calling them by racist epithets that would not be tolerated coming from a conservative. It's all a part of their two-faced, forked-tongue, double-standard, which many of them – bafflingly – seem to have absolutely no self awareness of. That's why I call leftists auto-vampires, among other things: They are invisible to themselves when looking in a mirror.

By the way, I normally reside in one of the most conservative counties in the US of A. I don't think I've heard the N-word used in years in said county. But of late, I've been working in a very democratic town in a very democratic state. Everyone around here is a lifelong democrat. Their parents were democrats, their friends are democrats. And I get to hear the N-word at least once a day — in bars, from clients, in stores.
But that's ok, because these noble liberals aren't racists. How do I know this? They tell me. Indeed, every one of them starts their racist diatribes with the exact same words: "Now I ain't racist, but them n…."
What upsets me is that while liberals are tossing around Tigger as if it's their inalienable right, people on the right are petrified of even alluding to race lest they give libs more fuel for their "racist" slander against the right. The pity for the libs is that the precise language they've claimed privilege to, as demonstrated by your post, is detestable and reveals them as exactly what they are.

but certain words are so vile not only will I not say them I will not hear them.
That is one of those words.
Another was used by a Mr. Hilton this past week to describe a young woman with whom he disagreed.
There are others but no need to elaborate further

Weird. I often hear the exact same thing, and most of the "verbally challenged' individuals employing it here are both Democrat and Hispanic.
There seems to be some kind of racial pecking order, too. Anglo, Hispanic, African-American, and Illegal aliens. There are epithets used on all rungs, but the most frequently used are N-word and the epithet most used for illegals, which deals with how most got across the Rio Grande. And they also use that very same phraseology you described, Andrew.

Democrats see blacks as inferior; they don’t see an individual that’s capable of accomplishing goals on their own they see a victim of skin color that needs to be helped by these guilt ridden white liberal bedwetters. Liberals condescension and soft bigotry of low expectations leads them to support concepts such as affirmative action and ebonics. If a Conservative comes across an @sshole they’ll call them an @sshole, a liberal will liken them to being black or a homosexual [liberals love to call people faggots].
I don't think using the n-word is in itself racist. It depends on context. In their circumstance, it was used to demonstrate how Republicans view black people. Obviously, this is extremely illogical and stereotypical, but not racist. That doesn't mean it should be said out loud in public, just that it isn't necessairly racist.
Nonetheless, liberals would probably be the first ones to condemn use of the word if it was Republican. Scratch that: if a Republican said something even remotely close, liberals would jump all over them. Can you imagine if Bill O'Reilly used the n-word. There would be calls for his boycott, death threats, etc.

My mother and sister are hardcore Obamabots, and they wouldn't say the "n" word if you waterboarded them.
HOWEVER, I had (past tense) a friend who was even farther to the left, a self-proclaimed "socialist" (his word, not mine) of the Chomsky/Zinn/Ayers variety. He was easily, without a doubt, the most racist American I've ever known. There is not a racial epithet in existence that didn't come out of his mouth at one time or another. He despised Clarence Thomas and Condi Rice with a passion that bordered on lunacy. And don't even ask how he felt about Israel and Jews in general.
When is the truth finally going to come out and how deeply racist the far left really is?
And by the way, it was the liberal welfare state that destroyed the black family. Even slavery couldn't do that.

That's an argument for situations such as repeating a conversation, or something you read, or historical context.
It is not a correct argument for someone just saying "You think this person's a …", because in reality the fact that the term occurred to the person making the statement reveals that THEY are racist. So it's still quite racist.
Anyone who spends time with liberals will know they are racist. First, many if not most white liberals live in white neighborhoods. All those college-educated liberals have money. Noam Chomsky has money, lives in a white neighborhood, works with all-white people. Their 'concern' for minorities is just another facet of their fascism – the belief that they know what is best for everyone.
I wish I knew the Vietnamese word for Tigger because I'm quite sure I hear it every time the Vietnamese nail techs see a black woman walk in the door. Second only to NRA members in the Republican Party voting bloc are the Vietnamese nail salon workers.
I have absolutely no idea what the word tigger means. At first I though it was a misspelling ot Tiger, but that didn't make any sense. What does this word mean anyway and why would anyone post an entire article about it without defining it?

Even thought I’m considered by the lefties to be a stupid, vapid, techno challenged, ain’t got no clue, don’t know how the younger gen. works, racist, I totally pawn these n00b’s on XBox live at EVERY on line multi player game. They hate me for it…heh.
You name the game, I smoke them. (Mainly because I’m older and wiser than them.) I would receive dozens messages in my folder after a match, (before I switched off comments to “friends” only), and during play from these 20 something bigots. Short list: “You’re a Tigger, Fa88ot, cu#t, b!tch, ect, well you get the jist, there is no end to what they know how to say.
Even during a match I can hear them talking this way, from start to finish, to each other. Sickening. This is their normal, everyday language. Not mine. Solution: Later, I find their gamer “tags” and mute them in my options menu.
Man, I wish it was as easy to "switch" he lefties and their talk off like that, in every day, real world life.

The problem with such labels is that they allude to the persons color as being the cause for whatever problem the user has a issue with. To identify the persons color as if it were relative to the discrepancy is surely to be perceived a racist. I believe that is the distinction many liberals chose to home in on. If you dare to acknowledge a persons race when making a derogatory comment then you will automatically be labeled a racist as a matter of convenience. It's these PC word games in which they seek to trap their opponents and nibble away at their credibility.
I find it very sad that otherwise intelligent people would give a simple word so much power over them.
Words have no inherent power on their own. They are simply sounds. They have only the power over you that you allow them to have. The most vile and hateful word you can imagine has no power over someone who doesn't know what it means, or doesn't care what you think.
Additionally, I would like to point out that simply calling someone a 'racist' doesn't necessarily make it so, either. I have been called many nasty names in my life, but I can assure you, my parents were married when I was born, my mother was not a dog, and my head is not full of feces.
At Hickam Air Force base when I was little the neighbor kid across the street (D). We became friends over a shared awe of Dinosaurs. We wanted to be Paleontologists when we grew up. Our moms were amused we even knew the word but to us what job could be cooler than digging up dinosaur bones. One day, I invited (D) to the public pool off base. He could not go and was told by my Dad that some people at the pool that thought black people were dirty but these people were very stupid and I was not to believe them. I said “Dad someone should tell them that’s dumb because (D)’s mother makes him bath twice a day”. (D)’s mom that week decided to make (D) and his brother bath in a tub outside that week. It earned (D) the derision of the other little boys in our gang. This is the first I ever learned of this “Racism”. Among Republicans this issue would never come up. Not in Lincoln’s time in 1868. Not when I was a little boy in the 1960’s and not now. Race has always been an obsession of the Democratic Party.

I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. Ideology will ALWAYS trump religion, race, gender, or any other issue you bring up (at least as far as the Left is concerned). Thus, Bill Clinton faced several credible accusations of rape, yet was defended by NOW and other feminists, some of whom said his policies meant he was entitled to a little oral pleasure from time to time; Bush = a monkey, Condi his house servant, without any cry from the left (but see what happens when a chimp cartoon that has NOTHING to do with Obama suddenly becomes racist); millions of black Christians, who are against abortion and against homosexual marriage, nevertheless vote lockstep for the party that is against their religious views.
The list is nearly endless. The fact remains that political ideology in America is the most important thing to the Left. It is therefore not so important what any of your views are as long as you are first not a right winger. They can have gay jokes from liberals, but you can't quote a Bible verse if you're a conservative, etc.

BTW, I disagree with your major premise. The N-word *IS* a racist term, especially in the context Mr. Slagle mentioned.
My favorite was "white tiggers." And in case we didn't get it the first time, the former KKK leader in the U S Senate repeated, "yes, white tiggers!" I think they named another highway in West Virginia after him the next day. But it's OK to speak of "white tiggers" when you're the conscience of the Democrat Senate.
Don't forget the classic "Individual tiggers are good people, but as a group, they're pushy."

I would think that any member of the extended Scholar family would have at least a nodding acquaintance with "Winnie the Pooh." We had to read "Winnie Ille Pu" in our Latin class, for chrissake. Public school student?
I have come to firmly believe that the Democratic Party at it's heart is inherently racist. Much of the evidence I have for this proposition are things most of us have seen happen before our very eyes. If one looks closely at the social programs Democratic governments have enacted in the US from the 1960's forward and compare them with the effects these programs have had on specifically the black communities, you would have to conclude that these programs were/are intended to destroy the family unit and the strongest community organization -the church of black Americans. And at the same time these programs prevented movement of black Americans from one economic strata to a higher one.
In more than one of his books, and in many of his columns Dr. Thomas Sowell cites real numbers comparing the relative similarity between illegitimate births in the black and white communities for the 20 years before the Great Society and the unreal increase in the black community versus the relatively unchanged rate in the white community. And he goes on to cite similar changes regarding one-parent families, rise in economic categories etc.
That Democratic Party never considers using govt. to allow equal opportunity for all Americans is more evidence that they desperately do not want black Americans to move up the economic ladder in great numbers, so as to better control them. It comes close to indentured servitude if not quite slavery. They refuse to allow black Americans the chance to provide black children with an actual educating education, which again is another method for insuring a lack of movement to a higher economic class and better standard of living.
Black America has lost at least two generations of it's youth to these pernicious racist methods of control used by the Democrats. When will Black America wake up and see what is being done to them by the Democrats? How many more black children have to grow out of adolesence and realize that the rest of their lives won't be getting much better from there on out?

Great point Dom—have you read Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism? He notes how Dems and their social engineering have close ties to Margaret Sanger (who Hillary just stated she is "in awe of") who was a big promoter of eugenics.
Welfare was the Democrat program to keep black kids away from their fathers and make them dependent on the government plantation. Affirmative action is the Democratic way of patronizing black people by pretending that they can't compete on a level playing field with white people. Slave reparations is the Democratic way of bribing black people into staying in the party without them noticing which party actually were the slave owners. Racial quotas are the method by which Democrats tell black people not to strive for a better life because they will always be able to get a job regardless of their qualifications. "It's a cultural thing" is the Democratic way of saying that it's good not to speak English well, or not to avoid loud, profane speech, or not to excel in school. "It's the result of four hundred years of oppression" is the Democratic phrase for enabling young, fatherless and unfocused black youth to justify an insane crime rate. Illegitimacy is a Democratic method for producing more Democrat voters. "Racial sensitivity" is the Democratic euphemism for treating all black people as a racial voting-pool instead of treating them as Americans joining in the entire panoply of American greatness, generosity and fairness. Racism is the Democratic word for what they practice, but project on us. The truth is that being "color-blind" is an impossible diversionary tactic. The greatness of America lies in seeing a person's color, and believing that it doesn't matter.
Dom–there are some black Americans who are waking up to this newer more insidious version of slavery propagated by the Democratic Party. The beautiful thing about it is that they are prominent black televangelists who get a lot of air time on BET and other such networks. They are attempting to spread the word. Maybe, hopefully, PRAYERFULLY the people will begin to listen. And the Dems are VERY racists. The KKK was created as a radical element of the Democratic Party. Everyone knows that conservatives are the racist party of today. The southerners are still angry they lost the civil war.
Actually, around here, they don't seem to make that distinction. Around here, "they" are "all criminals". And even more interesting, "they" don't seem to qualify as Americans. I've heard more than one local complain that "they" are taking benefits "that belong to Americans." Talk about a telling choice of words. And yet, these same liberals not only swear up and down that they aren't racist, they will accuse conservatives of being racist and therefore evil.

By the way, are we really doing ourselves any good pretending that we go into paroxysms of offense over a stupid word? Isn't that jumping through their hoops? I don't hear any blacks going into convulsions over the offense of calling me a cracker. Freaking whatever. It's a word, and not a very big deal. Grow up.
Oh Drie I am well aware of many black Americans who can see this result-that-dare-not-speak-it's-name. Folks in both the middle class and those not quite there yet. And I'm also confident that when a real paradigm shift in attitudes comes that it will emerge first in the black churches and be fortified thru the efforts of the black woman. No disparagement of black men, but the plain fact is that more black households are headed up by a woman. A consequence of these practices that we speak of. I'm a Christian and enjoy the preaching of several televangelists – the ones who really have the message. I particularly enjoy Bishop Jakes and Rev. Dollar to name just two. I've been listening to Jakes since the early 90's and always get some new kernal of insight or knowledge after his sermon. Thanks for the tip on the NBRA, I will make every effort to check out the website.

Do students still learn about Archie and Mehitabel? Mehitabel was Archie's friend. She was an alley cat with a certain, shall we say, fame among the other cats. Archie wrote bad poetry and worse prose with Mehitabel's advice. And Archie had to use only lower case, with strange punctuation and disjointed thoughts with occasional repetitive Tourette's-like bursts of unrelated words. This was because Archie had only an old manual typewriter to compose on. The other problem was that Archie was a cockroach. Apparently, Archie is still writing but he's using the pseudonym WEHA. And he's figured out how to do capital letters.

I know of no Liberal friends who would use this word. None. Not even in the context your [supposed] friend used it.
Now, you may be right about the way some Liberals view Conservatives. I know many who think Conservatives are closet racists. But I know that not to be true. However I read some of these comments and clearly many think Liberals are closet racists.

Great post. This reminds me of the time seven of my Lib friends and I were doing shots at TGI Fridays, and all seven of them started talking about why "faggots" (their word) should be allowed to get married. I was like, "Whoa! That's pretty hateful, guys!"

Many of us have occasionally used the public school jab. Believe me, it's not aimed at public school students per se, it's aimed at the teachers who have produced an ungodly number of ill-educated graduates. I attended public schools, and so did my kids, but by the time they were there our school district was a rarity in California. Most public schools in California today are either armed camps/holding facilities or leftist indoctrination camps designed not to educate, but to recruit semi-literate youngsters into the anti-American left. There are a few islands of sanity, but they become fewer each passing year. Good students will be good students even in those atmospheres, but it's usually a matter of strong determination on the part of the student, and often in spite of the unionized half-educated "teachers." So please don't take it as a personal attack when some of us use less-than-flattering verbiage concerning public schools.
I moved to Mississippi 8 years ago and haven't heard a white person use that word here yet. Sorry to disrupt anybody's nice comfortable stereotypes…..

I live in Austin, which is probably in the top five of the most liberal towns in the U.S. I can tell you that there are as many — if not more — racists on the left as on the right.

I wrote a fairly lengthy post on the subject, but it disappeared into moderation. A shorter version is that even though I know you meant well, the "n-word" is always racist when used by a white person, regardless of its intent. I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to plain speaking, but that word is just out of bounds under any circumstances. It's not hypocritical for a black person to use it, however crude it may be, but it is both hypocritical and racist when a white person uses the word even for purposes of accusing conservatives of racism. Just don't use it, under any circumstances.

My favorite experience was a loudly nasty liberal who called me everything but a death camp administrator when he found out I was reading "The Bell Curve." Within a couple of days, he had gotten a speeding ticket from a black police officer, and spent the whole day telling us about the sp–k who gave him a ticket only because he was white. And a few days after that, thinking himself among insider liberal friends, he proceeded to tell a grossly racist joke. Unfortunately for him, he told the joke to one of the office staff who just happens to be married to a black man from Ethiopia. He was fired shortly afterwards.

I had a friend involved in Charas, he ran the theater. Charas is a former lower east side school taken over by squatters in the mid 70s who then garnered a stabilized lease subsequently turning it into a community center for the poor people.
Then in 1998-1999 the city decides to sell the school sending Charas the organized community into a rage….. even Susan Sarandon came out to help the poor organized community 'fight the power' offering to help raise the $3 million to buy the building only another deal was already signed, sealed delivered.
The community organized whined and moaned about evil developers and whatnot stealing from the poor community however they left out one very important fact that being, during his tenure Mayor Dinkins had offered to sell the property for $100,000 to the Che's running Charas only they turned the down the real estate deal-of- the-century under the premise that they had a stabilized lease, paying low rent while avoiding property taxes and utilities.
The Che's running community organized Charas thought they could live there forever on the cheap and on the taxpayer dime….to this day they still whine and complain about how the man stole form them.
Liberalism only offers the illusion of care and concern; when one looks past the facade one can see an ideology void of substance and depth.

Honestly, I am so sick of the liberal argument that conservatives don't care about the poor and underprivileged. First off, conservatives GIVE MUCH MORE to charity than liberals. Second, conservatives want a country in which everybody is free to succeed to the level of their abilities. But personal responsibility plays a huge part of that. If you blow off school, mess around with drugs, get into a gang, or get pregnant young, you can't blame it on "the man" when you are suddenly in your 20's and have to provide for yourself (and maybe your family). Personal responsiblity has been destroyed by the Democrat entitlement system, that rewards people for personal failure instead of success. More fatherless babies? More money!
This is the greatest nation on earth and still the beacon of hope for millions of immigrants. The liberals will destroy it by penalizing the successful and dumbing down society to the level of the lowest performers in the name of "fairfness".

I was accused of being racist by liberal relatives because I planned to vote for McCain and because I shortened BHO's name into a contraction. This accusation originated from a relative who is one of the only two relatives I've had who ever used "Trigger" in casual conversation.
The rest of my relavites, mostly from the South, get angry when they hear that word.

Outstanding Tim, great post!! As a native Southerner, I've heard for years about how much of a rasist I'm because 1) I'm white, and 2) I'm a Southerner. And of course since I'm a conservative…. that makes me even worse than satan.
In the late 80's a car manufacturing facility was build in the county where I worked, and there was an influx of union/democrat-types to the area. As a county govt. inspector, I had to deal with many of them and I quickly learned just how racist these people were… I was horrified at the terms they'd use…. way worse that what was in Tim's post. Yeah, the fact that they were yankees was annoying, but I didn't care about that…. but the amazing amount of racist statements you'd hear from them was astonishing. Growin up and living in the South as I have, I never heard such language used before encountering those people.
