Obama Uses Stimulus For Anti-Choice Measure
by Tim SlagleWe all remember how during the last administration, any government money spent on an affirmation of life, was protested and ridiculed. Adoption counseling and abstinence programs were called unworkable, anti-choice and a squandering of taxpayer money. Any government investment in limiting the full range of choice was considered antagonistic to freedom. One of the first measures of the New Administration was to fund more abortions and eliminate any curbs on their frequency.
So it is with great surprise, that in today’s Drudge Report, I see this headline: “Stimulus to pay for anti-suicide fence…”
According to the article, up to 1.5 million dollars will be spent, putting up a fence on the Y-Bridge across the Cuyahoga Valley in Akron, Ohio, to prevent people from exercising their right to Department of Transit assisted suicide. Perhaps, the headline should read: “Obama funds anti-choice program,” because it has long been an established principle on the Left that suicide is a choice.
Many on that side of the aisle, have fought for the right to enlist the services of a doctor to help them out of this world. Suicide doctors are respected for their ability to see the penumbra of the Hippocratic Oath, and their willingness to do just a little harm.
Personally, I have long been an advocate of the right to suicide–especially for environmentalists. For the past forty years we have heard how the world will run out of food and resources within twenty years if we don’t take drastic steps to control population, so I believe that every individual who thinks the world is over-crowded has the right, the duty and the obligation to reduce that population, by one.
In Asian cultures it is considered an act of honor to take your life if you have disgraced your family or associates. Were criminals like Bernie Madoff and the perpetrators of the Stanford-Biden investment scheme raised in that culture there would be no court cases or tabloid headlines. And rather than enlist the Treasury Department, the whole mess could be cleaned up with a call to Aftermath Inc.
So will there be any fallout for the President? Doubtful. It is amazing how adept the Left has become at being on both sides of an issue, and they can always find a victim on either side to spin the story around.
Part of the movement behind the fencing of the Akron Y-Bridge are the parents of a troubled youth who believe he might not have taken his life if he had to climb a fence first. Conversely, in the Terri Schiavo case, the parents were the villains for wanting to keep their suffering daughter alive despite Terri’s heroic husband whose efforts helped her out of her miserable existence.
We can’t fence off every high spot in the nation. Furthermore, when we do it ruins the view for those of us who only want to take a walk across a long, high bridge with an unrestricted view. One of my favorite brisk walks is across the Golden Gate Bridge (a bridge that might also soon be fenced off). At the midpoint, I get an incredible moment of awe from the confluence of human ingenuity and natural beauty aligned there that literally takes my breath away. (Or maybe, it’s just too long a walk for someone so out of shape.)
Fencing off bridges, is just another step in the Ralph Naderization of America; a notion that we are capable of removing every single hazard in America with adequate legislation and disposal of treasure.
Ultimately, we will be left with a diminished nation, barely visible from between the slats of a safety fence.

That's a very interesting comparison. Certainly one I never considered. The left is fixated on "choice" and "rights" yet somehow differentiates between a woman's right to choose death for her child (aka her body) but would deny her the right to chose life or death for herself.
Tim,
Powerful expose of the insidious hypocrisy and illogic of the nanny-state.
One change suggested: Ultimately, our diminished nation will be barely visible to us through the locked doors of "Special Psychiatric Emergency Care Units" which exist now in most major hospitals, and are used routinely by law enforcement to cage the "non-conforming" and begin their life-long 'processing' by the "mental health profession."
The American gulag is here. It just doesn't have many 'residents' yet.
More every day, though.
Oh, great. I won't have time to settle my affairs before they raise the anti-suicide barriers on the Golden Gate Bridge. Oh, well, there's always the Transamerica Tower.

I'm single, I'll be happy to handle any affairs you've lost interest in…
P.S. S'mores good?
Delicious. The s'mores, not the affairs. Meanwhile, I realized that the Bank of America building was a much more appropriate choice for my leap of faith. "I left my heart in San Francisco," but I left my money in a BofA IRA.
it will probably be built by acorn. it will stop no one. but it will register them to vote as they fall by.
anybody ever see "the bridge". one of the most fascinating and morally ambiguous things i've ever seen.
Not Acorn, it'll be built by illegals–who'll, along with Union members, be the only laborers affected positively by the porkulus bill.
“Stimulus to pay for anti-suicide fence…”
On the front page of the "Weekend Journal" (WSJ), there's an article about the recent rise in suicides in the military.
Scanning the article, it seems there has been an uptick in military suicides of late. While the WSJ's editorial page is conservative, I find the rest of the writing in the paper to lean lefty — probably the result of the reporters' "journalistic education" (an oxymoron, I know). I turned to Spouse and wondered aloud if this uptick in suicides was — like the reportage of military personnel and murders a few years back — another Lefty move to disparage the military that protects their right to speak freely and disparagingly of the military — talk about convolution! Anyway, then I clicked
on Drudge and saw that Lefty Paradise San Francisco is going to get an anti-suicide fence.
I wonder of the WSJ reporters are getting ready to do a story on jumpers in San Francisco.
Suicide is an option for environmentalists- such and idea. Where do we sign them up?
This is a great line!

I posed the same conundrum to 'climate change' zealots;
If the end of the world is neigh why don't we use all of our might to take over those countries who do not comply with rules that will 'save the planet'? Is it because they would rather let the earth die than conquer and rightly convert all polluting nations or is it more likely they are using the 'crisis' to scam the world out of its $$? If we are actually preventing the end of all life on our planet then why aren't all resources being expended?
Here's another example: Octomom. The reason she is hated is because liberals hate the idea that additional mouths are now here, breathing in their precious oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. They hate the notion that she had more than two children, to "replace herself and the father" which is what I've been told is the new liberal credo, similar to the Chinese law of one child per family.. Yet, liberals are the ones pushing and promoting the very technology — in vitro fertilization — that allows women to be impregnated and give multiple births: genetic research. When it works, they decry it because it wasn't used in the way they intended, for example, to create embryos that can be destroyed to "harvest" stem cells. Who's sick now?
The end of the world is "neigh?" Is that when the Four Horsemen arrive?
I think that's a stretch. EVERYONE hates her because she's clearly bat s**t insane, on top of being incredibly irresponsible and a media w**re. Across the board people are asking why she chose to have more kids when she could barely take care of the six she already had. Even people who are glad she chose to carry all eight to term instead of 'slective reduction'/abortion can't in their hearts think this woman should have had so many children. She makes the Duggars look like the model family and I always thought they were a bit crazy to have so many kids, although they're well looked after.
For liberals, "choice" only applies below the waist. Everywhere else liberals–being the most highly-evolved beings which they know themselves to be–will make the choices for you.
Nay.
It's when the Almighty Spell-checker beats our asses for being so looosey-gooosey with the verbiage. : )

It's an idea that I've been working on for a while. Not only do we help them kill themselves, we fly their remains to the Continent of their choice, where we will feed them to any endangered species they believe has more of a right to exist on this Earth than humans.
They'll never put a fence on the Golden Gate Bridge, there'll be a lawsuit. If they put up a fence it'll discourage illegals from crossing the bridge.
They'll also claim it's some sinister evil Republican plot, planned by the Bush administration. They were hoping once the fence goes up, the illegals would automatically try to get to other side.
I hate it when ignorant people use Terri Schiavo as an example for assisted suicide. (Yes, I'm talking to YOU, Hillary!) Terri Schiavo was not given assisted suicide. She was starved to death at the request of her husband against the protests of her family by order of the state.
The higher fence means that if we manage to climb over it it is not a suicide anymore, but a consumer protection issue. Everybody wins
I think the real underlying issue is most people just have never visited Akron, if more people would, they'd see the point. Not the point of the walls absolutely being necessary mind you, but the point of why suicide off that bridge is common enough to warrant the walls in some people's eyes.
Don't get me wrong, Akron is full of very nice people, but believe me if I were forced to live there, I'd consider it as an option as well. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that if Gitmo ever is actually closed, Akron would be a strong contender as a replacement location. Just to prove I'm not Ohioist, I'd also submit Johnstown to the list from my very own birth-state of PA. Johnstown has several points in its favor; the most important of which is that weekly visits from John Murtha could be part of the correctional plan, and after a few of those…well let's just say he's a walking, talking Y-Bridge and there are plenty of scenic vistas (and runaway trains) available to help the detainees along. I am firmly in favor of allowing these new guests in the US the ability, freedom, and right to choose.
That is an idea that's time has definitely come. Kudos!
To steal (and modify) a line from "A Chorus Line," "committing suicide in San Francisco is redundant."
Funny!
It's more symbotic to off yourself in Johnstown by drowning. How I do love the cogency and straitforwardness of the moonbats. I think they should electrify the fence. There's nothing like a jolt of 20,000 volts to right the suicidal. Problem solved!
Also add that the left likes to 'throw money' at suffering, like an indulgent parent of brats. As President Obama himself stated, the stimulus bill is a spending bill, aka, wasting money on your pet project bill to buy votes. When will we learn?
The problem with that is the river does provide a lot of irrigation for the surrounding farms, and no one really wants tomatoes fortified with essence of detainee after all.
Well except maybe PETA, they could put the Jihadi-fu right next to the Clown-fu or whatever the heck they want to call the Clooney sweat laced foodstuffs. I call it simply: Eww.
Whether the Duggar family is or isn't your cup of oolong, I fully support their right to have as many kids as they want, and as long as Michelle's uterus doesn't fall out onto her shoes. They seem to be excellent parents, and take nothing from the government. However, that freaky Octomom heifer shouldn't have been impregnated by that goofy, money hungry doctor, who surely knew she was bat s#it crazy after spending an hour with her. I saw a few days ago where they free nurses that she had been provided were quitting, due to the fact she refuses to try to control any of the chaos. One nurse said of the 150 or so hours she had spent w/the children, Octoho had spent maybe 8 of those with her children. They also said the kid's were not doing schoolwork, getting enough sleep, and were in general running wild. I am all for people's freedoms, but someone should take those kids away from that crazy beeyotch before one or more of them end up dead.
AJ,
So make them see the light, huh? That's a good plan.
"I am all for people's freedoms, but someone should take those kids away from that crazy beeyotch before one or more of them end up dead."
Agreed!
And since we're suddenly in the age of mystical retroactive taxes on people that annoy us, I think the government should tax whatever harebrained fertility doctor that agreed to do the procedure at 90% to pay the taxpayers back for all the social services money that will wind up being spent just to keep those poor kids going.
Exactly! I think this is an issue on which all sides of the political spectrum can agree: the indisputable b@tsh*t crazinessof the Octomom, and the irresponsible dou**eb*g of a "doctor" who impregnated her. I fear we'll be hearing more about her, none of which will be good for the kids.
Hasn't everybody heard of the old saying "When it's your time, it's your time and there's nothing you can do about it"? Well for heavens sake it's that persons time. Besides fences don't work, ask congress.

Where is Darwin when you need him!
Octoho. Perfect.
The "replace herself and the father" isn't new, just recycled. My best friend and his wife both bought into the "even replacement" nonsense. They were having their first when we were having our third. He told me he wondered if I understood what all those babies were doing to the world overpopulation. So I asked him if he had figured out yet what causes babies. That was 1976.
And an old boss of mine who had one kid and whose wife said that they weren't having any more because of the population bomb came by to see me about the same time. That was the first time he realized that we were about to have our third. The first comment out of his mouth was "Thank God somebody still has the sense to pop out those little taxpayers."
< . . ."before one or more of them end up dead."> Or flies a plane into a skyscraper.
I used to think "overpopulation" sounded like a crock. Then I turned 15 and had to start commuting. Through New England traffic. To jobs in retail. So, by now, consider me on board for that one: If there's one thing I definately don't need, it's a greater number of PEOPLE to put up with.
Suicide ought to be legal, but it's proper to discourage/prevent people from doing it publically – it can create serious health and safety issues for people around who do NOT want to die that day.
Regarding Octomom: My general dislike for about 90 to 98 percent of my fellow humans aside, I don't REALLY have a fundamental problem with people having tons of kids – I have a problem with THIS derranged nutcase having tons of kids. Now, if the world population of Nobel-winning scientists wants to pair off with, say… the world population of Japanese supermodels and pump out eight gorgeous and brilliant progeny per-coupling? HAVE AT IT! Hell, I'd DONATE to that! Suleman, on the other hand? No, no thanks. One of THOSE was already too many.
People are already eating tomatoes fortified with essence of illegals, excuse me, migrant laborers. You don't see porta-potties scattered around the fields, and breaks are discouraged. Detainees couldn't be worse.
Maybe Mom was right and I should wash the bagged salad.
Explains why Chi-Chi's went under though, which is a darn shame, I loved the Cancun seafood burrito.

By her husband who actually already had another common law wife and had thus, legally relinquished any and all claims to his first wife … though that was just a minor technicality legally speaking. Not to mention that adultery is not only grounds for divorce n many states, but also a felony in others and for members of the armed forces. But hey, why all the legal mumbo jumbo when it is only a human life at stake?
The cause of depression for the people in Akron is that they don't have THE "Y-bridge" in their town. That's downstate in Zanesville. That Y-bridge is the only bridge you can cross and stay on the same side of the river!
Liberace sometimes used a line in his show of his visit to Zanesville and how mean the people were to him. He would quip, "It's the only town where they told me to go to the middle of the bridge and turn left."

"essence of detainee." They should sell that at the perfume counters to all the crazy moonbats who want to give those little buggers a hug. Did ya'll see where a would-be (as they called him), suicide bomber was going off to do his "mission" the other day, and when he was leaving his fellow brothers-in-bombs hugged him goodbye? He experience a case of "premature detonation", and blew himself and another 6 wannabes up! Now that is efficiency! Wonder if the sign outside the bomber camp now says " 0 days since last work work accident?" I just love a story with a happy ending!
we all live in a world of our own making. What is funny is that the father of the so-called Population Bomb theory, Paul Erhlich, was SO WRONG on his numbers. If can find that book today, read it. It will make you laugh till you cry.
And we all took him at his word in the 70s. What the h** did we know, we were just in college, where we learned, ah, nothing.
Well, a fence will never work. These people need counseling. There's plenty of places that offer it..
Oops, not that one!
What threads! Terry Schaivo should shame the right. When they autopsied her, huge parts of her brain had gone away. Anyone who SAW her acting like a conscious being was delusional. She was, under any definition, brain dead. I was a teacher a decade ago and taught sex ed. Teaching abstinace in Alaska…how's that working for you? My state teaches abstinance only after "W"'s work as governor. Now we have the 2nd highest teen pregnacy rate in the nation. My hometown banned sex ed early. Guess which school district in Texas has the highest teen pregnacy rate in the state?
I have the same problem with OctoHo as I do with the Mormon polygamy compouds. The state is paying for their wacky ideas. Since the extra wives are not LEGAL, the families get assistance. Where does that stop?
For all the mean comments about the Obama programs, He only got elected because of the hugely incompetent policies of the last eight years. Bush and the republican congress elected Obama.
Now that's funny, wrong on a whole host of levels, but still funny.
I am not a LDS, so someone can correct me if I have it wrong, but Joe Tex, I believe no one thinks those polygamy compounds are Mormon. They are an offshoot that practices polygamy, and is not condoned by the LDS community. As for Terry Schiavo, the problem I had with it mainly was due to the fact they starved her to death. If it was deemed legal, not sure why, then couldn't they have found a more humane way to end her life? They do better at the vet, for an old dog. As for abstinence only education, I have a problem with schools teaching anything about sex, other than biology, in any sense. That is the job for PARENTS. If they don't do their jobs, then they should be the ones punished.
