First Name in News You Can Use
by Tom ShillueThis CNN video shows us that in these tough economic times, there is only one place to turn for tips on how to live well–Communism.

Watching this report from Havana, it almost seems fun living under totalitarian rule–Cubans are certainly “free” to work long hours on their cars. Communism also teaches you to make do with less, helping you to be more creative and resourceful, and affording you the opportunity to tool around in a classic Chevy or Caddy. Just look at that grill–living in Cuba is like being in the movie “Grease!”
CNN forgot to mention the other way that Cubans love to tinker with their vehicles.

Nice boat.
(sarcasm)
Can’t you see? Those ignorant peons don’t know how good they have it! There’s no advertising in Cuba telling you to buy more things so you can line the pockets of fat-cat corporations and the wealthy!

Nice boat. I hope those Cubans made it over here to the US of A…
Dear Kendama and Tom,
Castro will be dying soon and Hollywood will have a love-fest.
So I’d like to provide some information on what’s become an oddly rare subject: Castro killing Cubans.
Please look up my new book, “Mercenary’s Tale: fighting Fidel Castro” on Amazon.com and decide if you’re interested.
When Fidel reaches room temperature our Media will crow about his life and accomplishments – education and health care, Cuban style – and how he improved the lives of farm workers and so-called Cubans of color.
But the man’s a monster who killed many thousands of innocent Cubans in direct furtherance of his warped ideology.
They don’t care about the truth. The CIA hired me as part of Operation Mongoose in the early 60s and we raided into Cuba and rescued hundreds of refugees. We also found the bloody evidence of Castro’s secret “refugee policy”.
I wrote a book about one such rescue; it reads like a novel, less than 300 pages.
Former U.S. Marine and Tucson Police Officer, with a BS in Criminal Justice, I was Chief Investigator for the Governor of Arizona in the late 80s and have been Director of an Investigative Agency in Arizona for over two decades. “Mercenary’s Tale: fighting Fidel Castro” recounts an actual incursion into Cuba after The Bay of Pigs.

One question. If Cuba is so good, why does so many swim through shark infested water to get out of it?
Just asking.
That’s a bitchin’ ride yo’.
I <3 Tom Shillue!!!!!!!!
Tom, sorry buddy, but in this post, you’re guilty of the thing that we (rightly) accuse liberals of. When I read your description of the video on Cuban car maintenance, I figured, as you suggested, it would be a “puff piece” on Cuba. The fact is, CNN actually succeeded in telling the truth. True, they did NOT say that Cuba is a communist infested swill-hole that requires American purging, but the report WAS balanced in that it told the truth about how the communist system makes people slaves to their cars instead of the other way round. The overall point of the story was to show how the Cubans struggle everyday with the things we take for granted: A result of a communist society, which was indeed mentioned. When I saw the video, it actually reinforced the fact that Cuba really is the anal sphincter of the planet. So, if we want to pick apart CNN’s media bias, I would suggest reporting on the stuff that really shows it off, rather than the ones that tell the truth about a communist country’s shortcomings. In other words, they got that story right. It didn’t make me think that it would be nice to live there, it made me feel glad that I do NOT live there.
I’m a pro-American conservative citizen of Taxada… er… Canatax… well, in the “Great White North” anyway (no, you P.C. libs, that’s not a racial thing, it means the SNOW we get up here!). But we do our side no good when we make mountains out of molehills the way the libs do. We need to be better than that. We, mainly, need to be more accurate than that.
Meanwhile, I do wish you the best and hope you’ll keep up the good fight.
EjIMBo.
I remember that Cuban pickup from 2003, and I thought to myself “Man, if I was in the Coast Guard and I saw that, I’d LET those guys get to America. And then I’d hire them to be my team on Junkyard Wars.”
But hey, Cuba is an island paradise, right? Because health care is free.
Keep up the great work, Big Hollywood! Love this blog.
My Dad was an auto mechanic. That all looks normal to me. He would run cars into the Ground. We never sold a car, it was our house, and the next stop the junk yard. We were sort of the nursing home for used cars. That being said, Communism sucks. But I think we all agree on that. Wow JIM is taking this post a little seriously! I just love the phrase “P.C. libs!” Wow what a zinger, he got us!
Yes. That was certainly no puff-piece.
Let’s at least accurately represent the content before criticizing it, okay?
They should spend a few of those hours converting their engines to run on vegetable oil.

I like that most of these commenters seem unaware that you are a comedian, and that you don’t really think Cuba is just like Grease – it’s not even Grease 2.
But listen to the tone of the piece, and remember that CNN correspondent who basically lied and ignored the autrocities that Sadaam was committing in Iraq so he wouldn’t get kicked out of the country. Then listen to the tone of CNN when they start reporting about Americans having to keep their cars for few years instead of buying a new one every year. You think CNN will sound as positive about that? No they will be blaming Bush for the hardship he is causing Americans because we can’t buy a new car every year. No, this was report was not accurate. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that much of it was just a lie the reporter created to file his story.
They so stole their ideas from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the Six Million Dollar Man ( “we can re-build him…”).
Comedy is hard. : P
Tom yer great. Love the piece.
Can you say “embargo?”
Why do I half expect to see those vintage cars lined up in fourth of July parades all across the States after their owners trade them for a Geo Metro and a pair of Levis…. (In a few years…)
“You’re wrong! Here’s why…..”
