This is a brilliantly thought-through and highly nuanced essay. Well done, Mr. Lifson. It encompasses something I have thought about frequently with regard to breaking the seemingly monolithic Leftist grip on the entertainment industry. You wrote: "But no man is an island. In figuring out how to behave, people pay attention to others’ actions, noting what works and what doesn’t - what gets rewarded and what gets penalized." It has long been my contention that the vast majority of entertainment professionals are anything but ideologues. i suspect only a few are true believers (Ed Asner, Norman Lear and the like) while the majority are fairly apolitical and just go along for the ride. It's cool to be accepted and why bother thinking too deeply about such things anyhow? As you point out. Big Hollywood can and will begin to turn the ship in another direction. I'm an optimist, so I don't believe that all is lost or that It will take as much effort as many think. We just need to get to a point of critical mass. Thanks for a push in the right direction.

Most "professional" creative people are liberal (free) thinkers anyway. That's the essence of creativity..seeing possibilities beyond the given. The "broader" culture is an odd statement..has anyone in the "broader" culture chased a 25 foot shark, been to an exorcism, been head of a mafia family, been on an oceanliner that's hit an iceberg, seen a 30 foot gorrilla climb to the top of the Empire State building..etc?

Curious disconnect here between the verbose hypothesist and the pithy public.

Let's aim for the middle ground folks.

For the "recovering academic":
* Bulletpoint those ideas.
* Lose the theory, shrink the critique, cut to the chase.
* Where do we go from here? Propose solutions.

For the voices from the crowd:
* Offer a viable strategy to address the problem.
* Enumerate recommended action items.

Some great points for us to digest. Lifson hits the nail on the head. "Self-preservation is the primary imperative for any group. When group members observe behaviors which seem likely to impair the survivability of their group or themselves, they tend to sanction that behavior - punishing it publicly, by word or deed or both."

John, your contribution is about as stupid as some of the so-called important big wigs deciding which project is green-lighted.

This site is not for the typical Hollywood types who are more interested in if the current "in" starlet is wearing panties while partying at the local "in" nightclub. It requires an ability to read big words without moving your lips or resorting to a dictionary.

It is agreed that you have to go through a lot of slush piles to get a pearl of beauty. The beauty of this site is that it is already done for you. You just have to re-train your brain to be able to retain a few extra thoughts while reading.

Yes. No education for the last generation and a half. Tough to change idiots. Reading is definitely out so visula media is the best way. Not certain yet whether the youngin's could understand a real story.

No strategy, bankroll or marketing campaign can overcome all the BS that hollywood stands for and does. Only one thing beats hollywood and the skanks that run it. Better stories in film. If those better stories are better directed, better edited, better produced then it doesn't matter what the lefties, socialists and commues (aka communitarians) and commies do in the movies because everyone will know they suck by comparing them to the good films.
