			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A common refrain used by progressives against conservatives is a deconstructionist war against the concept that there even is such a thing as the Left: “There’s so much diversity and disagreement in ‘the Left’ that you can’t just call it ‘the Left.’”</p>
<p>This is just a defense mechanism the leftist employs to avoid having to actually examine their movement. Cult members need to have criticism of their cult obscured. It’s the equivalent of “The first rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about Fight Club…”</p>

<p>There’s a grain of truth here, though. All leftists share core ideas – particularly hatred of conservatives and an infinite faith in big government – but there is a range of thought, not unlike denominations within religions. There are variations in doctrine and tactics between Marxists, Alinskyites, <em>Mother Jones</em> populist progressives, <em>Nation</em> socialists, <em>Daily Kos</em> Democrats, <em>Counterpunch </em>communists, and <em>Dissent</em> social democrats. Grouping them all together under the label “the Left” is no more inaccurate than describing Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, and Lutherans as Christian.</p>
<p>Today, thanks to the extraordinary journalism and research of <a href="http://benjaminshapiro.com/" target="_blank">Ben Shapiro</a> for his must-read book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Primetime-Propaganda-True-Hollywood-Story/dp/0061934771/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1308574902&amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank"><em>Primetime Propaganda</em></a>, the focus is on one “church” in particular: the Hollywood Left.<span id="more-485912"></span></p>
<p><em>Primetime Propaganda</em> is not a content analysis of the last 60 years of TV. Instead, Shapiro wore his Harvard Law baseball cap and interviewed some of Hollywood’s most influential television creators. Assuming from his alma mater and last name that he was one of them, the Hollywood insiders were too honest for their own good. Time and again Shapiro found them confessing that A) Yes, the Left dominates Hollywood, B) Yes, conservatives are blacklisted, C) Yes, they did try and use television to push their politics, and D) No, they did not see anything wrong with any of this in the slightest.</p>
<p>(For the evidence <em>on tape</em> see <em>Big Hollywood</em>’s <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/author/ppropaganda/">thorough archive</a> of the many damning admissions from the creators of history’s most influential TV shows.)</p>
<p>The revelations Shapiro unearths are only the beginning. This is also a masterful history book that will transform readers’ understanding of television. Shapiro leaps back to the 1950s and in the first 220 pages of the book interweaves his blockbuster interviews with the story of how a small clique of executives, producers, and writers created most of the TV shows that have shaped four generations of Americans. The heart of the book is the second and third chapter, focusing on the history of TV comedies and dramas. Shapiro goes down the line from <em>The Honeymooners </em>to <em>All in the Family</em> to <em>Cheers</em> and <em>Friends</em>. He documents the subversion of the cop and legal dramas from the early days of righteous cops and prosecutors to the nihilism of <em>Hill Street Blues</em> and <em>Picket Fences</em>.</p>
<p>The picture that emerges from Shapiro is of Hollywood leftists distinct from Washington, DC Democratic Party leftists, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Subversion-Inc-Terrorizing-American-Taxpayers/dp/1935071149/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1308575039&amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank">ACORN community organizing leftists</a>, and the academic Ivory Tower leftists. The defining characteristic of the Hollywood leftist is an embarrassing abundance of anti-intellectualism. Most of the producers and writers Shapiro profiles have barely thought through their politics. If that’s the case then what drives Hollywood to embed leftist ideas in their programs and exclude conservatives? Superficial notions about what <em>feels</em> right. The Hollywood Left fantasizes that they are the champions of the “have-nots,” the outsiders, the oppressed.</p>

<p>This anti-intellectualism is why in Hollywood the ABSOLUTE MOST IMPORTANT politics are the social issues. (As evidence that Hollywood leftists care about these subjects above all others, observe how they will tolerate hawkish, fiscally conservative Republicans as long as they’re pro-gay and pro-choice. Shapiro’s example: “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry.)</p>
<p>Hollywood is not a town of deep thinkers. It’s a bubble filled with deep <em>feelers</em>. Next time a Hollywood leftist is on TV spouting their clichés note how often they “feel” instead of “think.” That’s a Freudian slip confessing a disagreement not with <em>what</em> conservatives think but in <em>how</em> conservatives think. The rejection is not just the Western tradition of individual liberty, but in the Enlightenment process of rational thought.</p>
<p>What are the unique implications for apostates of this church of the Left?</p>

Each author’s book is an important component in the revolt against the Hollywood Left’s mental gulag. They each bring the best of what their generation has to offer in the fight to retake our culture and our country. Read all three along with Shapiro’s book and a comprehensive picture of the Hollywood Left – and the means for defeating it – emerges.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em><a href="http://bigjournalism.com/journolist/">JournoList</a> scandal is back and prepare for it to be a driving force in the news for quite some time. </em>The Daily Caller<em> published an article tonight indicating they&#8217;ve obtained emails from the JournoList and the initial details are as damning <a href="http://bigjournalism.com/?s=journolist">as we expected</a> when the list-serv,  founded by the </em>Washington Post&#8217;s<em> Ezra Klein in 2007, surfaced with the Dave Weigel kerfuffle last month.</em></p>
<p><em>Snippets from the article below, but make sure to <a href="http://dailycaller.com/2010/07/20/documents-show-media-plotting-to-kill-stories-about-rev-jeremiah-wright/">read the whole thing</a> at the </em>Daily Caller<em> and return to Big Journalism early and often as we unpack the details that emerge and track the fallout from this seminal event in the history of left-wing media bias.  It&#8217;s unclear exactly what </em><em>the</em> Daily Caller<em> has, but there&#8217;s certainly no  indication from this article they&#8217;ve already laid all  their cards out on the table.<br />

<p>According to records obtained by <em>The Daily  Caller</em>, at several points during the 2008 presidential campaign a group  of liberal journalists took radical steps to protect their favored  candidate. Employees of news organizations including <em>Time, Politico, the  Huffington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Guardian, Salon</em> and the <em>New  Republic </em>participated in outpourings of anger over how Obama had been  treated in the media, and in some cases plotted to fix the damage.</p>
<p>In one instance, Spencer Ackerman of the <em>Washington Independent</em> urged  his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with  Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative  critics, Ackerman wrote, “Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call  them racists.”<span id="more-376666"></span></p>

<p>Jeremiah Wright was back in the news after making a series of media  appearances. At the National Press Club, Wright claimed Obama had only  repudiated his beliefs for “political reasons.” Wright also reiterated  his charge that the U.S. federal government had created AIDS as a means  of committing genocide against African Americans.</p>
<p>It was another crisis, and members of Journolist again rose to help  Obama.</p>
<p>Chris Hayes of the <em>Nation</em> posted on April 29, 2008, urging his  colleagues to ignore Wright. Hayes directed his message to “particularly  those in the ostensible mainstream media” who were members of the list&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230;Katha Pollitt – Hayes’s colleague at the <em>Nation</em> – didn’t disagree on  principle, though she did sound weary of the propaganda. “I hear you.  but I am really tired of defending the indefensible. The people who  attacked Clinton on Monica were prissy and ridiculous, but let me tell  you it was no fun, as a feminist and a woman, waving aside as  politically irrelevant and part of the vast rightwing conspiracy Paula,  Monica, Kathleen, Juanita,” Pollitt said.</p>
<p>“Part of me doesn’t like this shit either,” agreed Spencer Ackerman,  then of the <em>Washington Independent</em>. “But what I like less is being  governed by racists and warmongers and criminals.”</p>
<p>Ackerman went on:</p>
<blockquote><p>I do not endorse a Popular Front, nor do I think you need  to. It’s not necessary to jump to Wright-qua-Wright’s defense. What is  necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In  other words, find a rightwinger’s [sic] and smash it through a  plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out  in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a  state of constant fear. Obviously I mean this rhetorically.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>And I think this threads the needle. If the right forces  us all to either defend Wright or tear him down, no matter what we  choose, we lose the game they’ve put upon us. Instead, take one of them —  Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists. Ask: why do  they have such a deep-seated problem with a black politician who unites  the country? What lurks behind those problems? This makes *them* sputter  with rage, which in turn leads to overreaction and self-destruction.</p></blockquote>

<p>The article itself is even more nauseating, detailing the O-effect on men.<span id="more-148186"></span></p>
<p>It&#8217;s rough being a man who leans right and wants to stay up to speed on the latest fashion, style, etc. I&#8217;ve tried to read Esquire and GQ but found their liberal bias suffocating. Hey, just tell me which suit to buy and which male actor to emulate. I&#8217;ll groove on politics elsewhere.</p>
<p>I even had to say &#8220;so long&#8221; to &#8220;Men&#8217;s Health&#8221; magazine, and that hurt. It&#8217;s the best place to find healthy recipes, articles about things that matter to men over the age of 21 and photos of ripped dudes to shame me back into the gym. The latter also made my wife into a devoted reader. But last October the mag all but voted for Obama with a lovey dovey cover story, and that&#8217;s when I said goodbye. The mag&#8217;s editors <a href="http://whatwouldtotowatch.com/2008/12/27/reason-no-528-why-old-media-is-dying/">looked down at anyone who disagreed</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to say, &#8216;Hey, lighten up, it&#8217;s only a magazine.&#8217; And that&#8217;s true, to an extent. And I have no problem with &#8220;The Nation&#8221; or other lefty publications. Have at it. I read my conservative blogs and always make time to sample CNN.com, The Washington Post and other publications which occasionally veer left. But I don&#8217;t want to contribute to a popular culture that walks in virtual lockstep with President Obama.</p>
<p>TV. Movies, Academia. Most major news outlets. If right leaners hope to win back a share of said culture we have to take a stand, even if it&#8217;s as minor as canceling a magazine subscription.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s why Big Hollywood matters. Because if every media outlet is telling us the new president is cool/honest/hip/Spock-like/etc., after a while people believe it. Who cares if he tramples on every other campaign promise with alacrity?</p>
<p>The narrative will soon be set in stone. And that&#8217;s not healthy for politics, or the country no matter who you voted for last November.</p>
<p>So, goodbye, &#8220;Details.&#8221; I hope I can find another men&#8217;s magazine savvy enough to gain my readership &#8211; and wise enough not to rub its partisan politics in my face.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Few shows illustrate how low the state of popular music has fallen than <em>&#8220;</em>American Idol.&#8221;  While AI regularly finds singers of talent, the songs they feature are mostly chestnuts.  The show also encourages the type of singing that is more at home on Broadway than in small smoky clubs.  The judges put an inordinate amount of focus on vocal pyrotechnics encouraging contestants to test the outer limits of their ranges.  The most exciting news to come out of the most recent season is the possibility that Adam Lambert might join Queen, replacing the ill-considered Paul Rogers.</p>

<p>I would love to see Adam Lambert join Queen.  I already know all the songs.  And that&#8217;s a problem.  Singer/songwriters have been moving off-grid since the nineties.  With the demise of the major music conglomerates, innovative talent understands it&#8217;s up to them to record and release their own material.  The internet makes this possible.  No one knows the extent of the effect downloading has had on the music industry, but if we are to judge from the reaction, it has been devastating.  The Recording Institute Association of America has brought suits against parents whose children illegally download songs.<span id="more-147966"></span></p>
<p>The music press that used to serve a vast range of interests is dying.  <em>No Depression</em> and <em>Blender</em> bit the dust last year.  <em>Paste</em> is asking its readers for financial contributions.  <em>Rolling Stone</em> and <em>Spin</em> long ago gave up covering innovative grass-roots rock in favor of the ever-dwindling supply of &#8220;mainstream&#8221; acts.  <em>Rolling Stone</em> now resembles an uncomfortable cross between <em>The Nation</em> and <em>Vanity Fair</em>.</p>
<p>The remaining music rags seem to be involved in a conspiracy to cover the same artists.  How else to explain the simultaneous cover appearances of such bands as Vampire Weekend, Connor Oberst, and Bat for Lashes?  These are the &#8220;official,&#8221; industry sanctioned &#8220;edgy artists.&#8221;  Trouble is, all these music venues are waiting for someone else to sanction an artist before they&#8217;re interested.  They are missing the forest for the trees.</p>
<p>The internet and home recording obviate the need for Big Music.  Yes, having some edgy TV show choose a song off your record can be a career-maker (The Fray, anyone?), but somebody has to hear that song first and have the power to use it.  So let me tell you what&#8217;s been going on in the pop underground this year.  Like last year and the year before it, 2009 is shaping up as one of the most exciting pop music years ever.  It&#8217;s early June and I&#8217;ve been stunned with the breadth and quality of releases thus far.</p>
<p>Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder: <em>Makes Your Ears Smile</em>.  Andy Morten, formerly of The Nerve and Bronco Bullfrog has recorded a masterpiece of summer pop that is simultaneously simple and liltingly complex.  Andy Morten made all the sounds himself.  The closest precedent might by the Dukes of Stratosphere (XTC) who donned the mantle of psychedelic warriors to record songs that echoed their inspirations.  <a href="http://www.myspace.com/campbellstokessunshinerecorder">Morten</a> is an excellent singer and an inspired composer.</p>
<p>Roger Klug: <em>More Help For Your Nerves.</em> Two years ago power pop aficionados were gob-smacked by Bryan Scary&#8217;s debut which displayed superb musicianship, terrific dynamics and strong songwriting.  Last year it was Josh Fix.  This year it&#8217;s Roger Klug whose <em>More Help For Your Nerves</em> opens with &#8220;Tinnitus,&#8221; an ear blast comparable to Greg Pope&#8217;s &#8220;Sky Burn Down.&#8221;  This disc is an embarrassment of riches clocking in at just under an hour with 17 tracks.  None of them are throwaways.  Klug&#8217;s mostly a one-man band with inspiration up to his ears and a voice that hints at hidden cabaret chops.</p>
<p>The second song, &#8220;Dump Me Hard,&#8221; announces that this is an artist who&#8217;s got it going on in every department.  Every song is a standout although I would single out &#8220;For the Kids&#8221; for its bittersweet poignancy.  And it&#8217;s not just verse/verse/chorus/verse.  Klug breaks it up as in &#8220;About Time&#8221; which segues from upbeat pop to exuberant bluegrass before falling back into a hard rock groove.  <a href="http://www.mentalgiant.com">Mental Giant</a>, his music label, is just Klug.</p>
<p>Broken Promise Keeper: <a href="http://www.brokenpromisekeeper.com"><em>Ice Cold Pop</em></a>.  Another one man band.  Seldom have I heard such a strong debut of songs.  As powerful and memorable as <em>Marshall Crenshaw</em>.  Rob Stuart possesses an effortless musicality that affords his songs good bones-the changes, choruses and bridges are both surprising and inevitable.  Stuart has a radio friendly voice and the songs segue from one to the next.  Superb dynamics-one listen and you&#8217;re hooked.</p>
<p>The opener &#8220;Directions&#8221; with its insanely catchy hook contains the lyrics: &#8220;Change &#8211; new scenery sure would be nice/Change &#8211; but before we turn, let&#8217;s think twice/‘Cause when you take that fork in the road/ It helps to know where you&#8217;re trying to go.&#8221; Hmmm&#8230;.</p>
<p>Greg Pope: <a href="http://www.gregpope.net"><em>Pete</em></a><em>.  Pete&#8217;s</em> an extended play-seven songs-but they hit with the impact of last year&#8217;s triumphant <em>Popmonster</em>, which perched at the top of most Ten Best last year.  And here&#8217;s something the music dinosaurs can only dream about: Greg recorded these songs in March and April and the CD, with beautiful cover art, came out in May.  This type of inspiration to market in two months occurs because the lone singer/songwriter doesn&#8217;t have to wait for the suits&#8217; approval.</p>
<p>Valley Lodge: <a href="http://www.valleylodgemusic.com"><em>Semester at Sea</em></a> Second release from New York-based rock quartet jangles and buzzes its way from start to finish with delicious hooks, unique vocal choruses and great dynamics.  Highly reminiscent of Plimsouls, if slightly more sophisticated.</p>
<p>There is more.  Much more.  These independent releases are coming at the rate of about four or five a day.  That&#8217;s over a thousand records a year.  The music is infinitely better than what Big Music seeks to cram down our throats, yet one will search in vain for any mention of the above bands-or the hundreds of others of similar vein-in the traditional music press.  So what&#8217;s a pop fan to do?</p>
<p>There are numerous websites devoted to power pop.  My favorites are <a href="http://absolutepowerpop.blogspot.com/">Absolute Powerpop</a><a href="http://absolutepowerpop.blogspot.com/">,</a> <a href="http://www.popaholic.com/">popaholic.com</a>, and of course <a href="http://www.notlame.com/">notlame.com</a>, which in addition to being a label (The Toms, The Well Wishers, The Shazam) acts as a clearinghouse for all these great new bands&#8230;.</p>
<p>Two notes: A lot of these bands are releasing their CDs in simple cardboard sleeves.  You can get all the info you want on the back of one of these, and if the band chooses to print lyrics, such as <a href="http://www.fastballtheband.com">Fastball</a>, cardboard sleeves come in fold-outs like miniature versions of deluxe LP sleeves, which allow for more art.  This is a big step up from the odious plastic jewel box.  It&#8217;s also a big step back.  This is the way 45&#8217;s and LPs used to come.</p>
