Daily Call Sheet: ‘RoboCop,’ ‘Starship Troopers’ Remakes, Kevin Smith’s Meltdown and Oscar’s Salvation?

THE PROBLEM WITH KEVIN SMITH

Yep:

So it pains me to have to say that ‘Real Life’ Kevin Smith is anything but “silent” in our sphere of reality. Instead, Smith has become more and more adept at alerting everyone in the industry to the fact that he is one of the most insufferable, irritating, and loudmouthed actors and directors this side of Uwe Boll.

In my mind, Smith just hasn’t handled the fall of his career very well. Rather than focus on rehabilitating his craft, Smith’s neurotic insecurities have gotten the best of him and his need to bare his ass in public is only a symptom of a much larger problem.

There’s a second act in Smith. He just needs to make another “Chasing Amy.” He has it in him, obviously, but there’s no shortcut to a “Chasing Amy.” That kind of genius only comes from inspiration and hard work.

The wretched “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” was a gimmicky shortcut: “I’m going to be Judd Apatow now.” “Cop Out” was a gimmicky shortcut: “I’m going to bring back 80’s style action now.” “Red State” was a gimmicky shortcut: “I’m going trash the Right to earn back that love from the Leftist entertainment media and Hollywood now.”

Smith’s most desperate move was announcing his retirement.

I predict that once Smith removes his head from hindquarters and is able to mature to a point where he realizes he’s his own worst enemy, that will motivate him to get back to the hard work of making his own “Gone Baby Gone.”

Smith is reportedly pretty close with Ben Affleck. They should talk. They have much in common.

STARSHIP TROOPERS’ REMAKE IN THE WORKS

You can’t “remake” Doogie Howser in a SS uniform. You can’t remake the tone, the subversive anti-fascist themes, the epic presence of Michael Ironside, or all of that glorious nudity.

You can steal “Starship Troopers” story points but you can’t remake it.

Slate Says Detroit ‘Needs’ Anti-Christian, America-Slamming Statue

by Warner Todd Huston

For some strange reason the left-wing Internet site Slate.com thinks that the City of Detroit needs a statue erected to an anti-Christian, anti-American pop icon. That’s right, Slate thinks that Detroit needs to diss Jesus, slam capitalism, and attack the United States of America as an evil, violent nation. Strange recommendation for a city that literally drove America’s capitalist success story, isn’t it?

Well that is precisely what Slate is suggesting in an entertainment feature about raising a Motor City statue to the Hollywood sci fi movie character Robocop. After all, the Robocop movie was a purposeful slam on the United States and Christianity, not some celebration of her genius. This is exactly what the film’s director has said numerous times. Strange that Slate wants to use a character that presents what it claims is bad about America as something worthy enough to which to build a memorial.

For Slate Patrick Cassels, a 20-something actor, “Internet enthusiast,” and entertainment writer, announced his support of the statue to the violence-soaked movie icon mostly because it is an attack on “Reaganomicss” and corporations. But, as if supporting a paean to Marxism isn’t grating enough for building a statue in an American city, he spends no time at all on the anti-Christian theme of the movie.

Regardless a statue to Robocop is a great idea, Cassels asserts. “Robocop,” Cassels claims, “is a great ambassador for Detroit.” He thinks that a Robocop statue has “something important to say about the place and its plight.”

Director: Robocop Was an ‘American Jesus’ Because He Kills People

by Warner Todd Huston

Andrew Breitbart appeared at an awards ceremony in Chicago on Friday the 16th and one of his remarks was that Hollywood is “40 years into the left injecting bad into America.” To counter the bad, Breitbart urged us all to remind each other what is good in our great nation. As an illustration of Breitbart’s warning, I give you Paul Verhoeven, the director of the 1987 film Robocop.

robocop jesus

Verhoeven recently spoke to MTVs Josh Horowitz about the underlying symbolism of Robocop and his main conception was that the Robocop character was an “American Jesus” because his method of righting wrongs was to shoot and kill all evil doers. Robocop was judge, jury, and executioner all in one and that apparently makes him an “American Jesus.”

It was Verhoeven’s contention that America is little else but a violent nation that has no interest in peace, law, order, or diplomacy, but is the quintessentially violent cowboy, self-interested, and mostly a lawless place. (more…)

Lonewolf Diaries: Arresting Black People is Racist, You Pigs!

by Steven Crowder

I hate to say this, but it must be noted to understand the situation at hand: Black people commit more violent crime per capita than any other race. Now before you go all Johnny Cochran on me here and declare me a racist, let me just state that I am simply addressing a statistic, much like President Obama did last Wednesday. The only difference is that my statistic doesn’t fit into a politically correct agenda with an end game designed to demonize the members of our law enforcement. Do you folks out there honestly assume the worst in all cops? Does it insult you that Barack Obama assumes you do?

“There is a long history of African-Americans and Latino’s being stopped by law enforcement, disproportionately” – Barack Hussein Obama. Boy, there’s a prejudiced little statement… against cops.

Sure it may be true that more minorities in this country are pulled over or even given the once-over by our police officers… But a disproportionate amount… Really? (more…)
