–GREG GUTFELD MOVES TO PRIMETIME!
Is five p.m. primetime? Let’s just say that it is. After all, we here at Big Hollywood have been pushing for Primetime Greg for a while now and unlike the Soros’ funded, tax exempt Media Matters, we’d like to move on from bothering Fox News.

Is five p.m. primetime? Let’s just say that it is. After all, we here at Big Hollywood have been pushing for Primetime Greg for a while now and unlike the Soros’ funded, tax exempt Media Matters, we’d like to move on from bothering Fox News.

But take heart “Red Eye” lovers. Nothing’s changed in Unicorn Land. Greg’s simply doing double duty. The new Fox News Channel show is called “The Five” and it’s on at five p.m. and it’s on at five p.m. with five panelists. Get it? Along with Greg, you’ll find Bob Beckel, Dana Perrino, Eric Bolling and others talking about the big issues of the day — including, coincidentally, Soros’-funded Media Matters and their tax exempt status. Check out that clip. Yes, there is a leg chair.

Congrats and good luck, Greg. Well deserved. Though we do miss those ‘logues over here.

And now the Big Hollywood push to get Bill and Andy to primetime begins…

–BIG HOLLYWOOD CONTRIBUTOR DANA COMMANDATORE NEEDS YOUR VOTE

Through her invaluable blog, Rethinking Autism, and her superb work here at BH, Dana has (among other things) taken on some in Hollywood who have used misguided and even dangerous medical causes to promote themselves.
It’s one thing for an increasingly desperate Hollywood to remake a decent concept, it’s another to try and remake an iconic character. Like the ill-fated television reboot of “The Rockford Files” (that never got past the pilot stage), you can’t recreate Darren McGavin’s Carl Kolchak any more than you can create James Garner’s Jim Rockford or Red Foxx’s Fred Sanford. These are lightning in a bottle, character-driven classics.

Furthermore, television already tried and failed to reboot “The Night Stalker.” Is Hollywood now so out of ideas they’re actually remaking failures?

Note to Hollywood: You can call it “The Night Stalker,” but it won’t be “The Night Stalker.”

CLASSIC PICK FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 13TH

Turner Classic Movies:

8:00 PM Music Man, The (1962) — A con artist hawks musical instruments and band uniforms to small-town America. Dir: Morton DaCosta Cast: Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett. C-151 mins, TV-G, Letterbox Format

Robert Preston delivers one of the greatest and most infectious screen performances of all time as a con man looking to take a small town of “rubes” for everything they have until he meets and falls in love with a local librarian played by a luminous Shirley Jones. There are too many highlights to list, but if forced to pick one … it would be this.

If there’s a more perfect film for young kids it’s called “The Wizard of Oz.”

Other than that…

So let me tell you about Storm, a baby. It seems when Storm was born, his (or her) parents sent out an email. It read:

“We’ve decided not to share Storm’s sex for now – a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm’s lifetime (a more progressive place? …).”

Yes, they want to raise a genderless child. No boy toys. No dolls! No surprise.

Kathy Witterick is Storm’s mom – who I’ll call Goofball, since Kathy is so gender specific. Goofball practices “unschooling,” which says a child’s curiosity trumps the learning process.

Forget report cards, tests or books – junior’s intuition should lead to the best decisions.

It did for me: I ate a lot of paste.

And then there’s Goofballs’s hubby, David – who I will call Doreen, because David is so patriarchal.

Doreen teaches at a school that deals with class, race and gender.

Yeah, that’ll get your kid a job!

Talk about a self-perpetuating machine of stupidity. Who needs the three R’s when you only need one, and it’s rage?

Man, your kids are gunna love competing for jobs with Goofball and Doreen’s kids.

A gender studies major? Prepare for a life of temp work.

Now, this couple is weird, for they place the political before the personal. So self-involved, they feel the sacrifices and oddities they burden their families with, are for a greater good.

They live communism to the fullest: i.e. making everyone miserable. They can tell you what’s wrong with America, but never buy any toilet paper.

But hopefully, despite Goofball and Doreen’s selfish idiocy – their children will grow up fine. And then they can wonder: when will their parents finally grow up?

Probably around the time mom and pop need cash.

And if you disagree with me, you’re a racist homophobe.

So a couple of years ago, legendary playwright David Mamet wrote a scathing piece in the Village Voice, on his journey from a well-meaning lib to a contemplative conservative.

If you aren’t familiar with his work, he also wrote movies like The Untouchables, The Verdict and Glengarry Glen Ross.

—–

His new book, “The Secret Knowledge,” elaborates on this journey, condemning the left in devastating fashion.

What happens to people who do such things?

My prediction is that Mamet, if he isn’t disowned by his industry already, will be.

The break will be ugly, but clean.

He will be dismissed as a bitter crank who probably sucked to begin with.

All those awesome plays and films once praised by critics and celebs will now be reassessed.

As crap.

Because Mamet abandoned group-think.

Overnight, he will turn from legendary to lackluster – whose attack on the left must be due to artistic suckiness.

Which is why Red Eye has started the David Mamet Attack Countdown, which monitors the days until a once glorified artist is dismissed as an untalented buffoon.

He is not, of course, but it won’t matter. He walked away from his tribe, and will suffer for it.

While our clock counts down to reputation annihilation, I beg you to buy his book.

I read it, and it reminded me of my own journey: an abandonment of phony, wrong-headed earnestness, coupled with a growing disgust for the toxic stupidity that is political correctness.

That he chooses America over his craft – requires that he now be trashed by those around him.

Which says more about them, than him.

While we always worry when we find ourselves in agreement with Mediaite, we are happy to see the idea we promoted last week picking up some steam. And nothing doubles our resolve in seeing “Red Eye” moved to a more prominent Fox News Channel time slot than what we’re witnessing this week at the hands of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. With 2012 looming, the Right desperately needs a dog in this satirical fight, preferrably one that’s allowed to howl before 3 a.m.

The only thing more maddening than not having a weapon, is having a weapon that’s not being used properly. In the form of the “Red Eye” crew, Fox News has a proven talent at their disposal and there’s obviously a market for a primetime, satirical look at the day’s events. Does anyone doubt that Colbert and Stewart’s relentless leftism drives people away? And anyone who’s seen an episode of “Red Eye” knows there’s no one better suited to pick that audience up than Greg Gutfeld.

Mediaite’s Matt Schneider makes the same case:

First, why does Red Eye deserve the larger audience that would no doubt be waiting for it at an earlier time slot? Besides regularly featuring intelligent debates, provocative guests and hilarious comedy bits, Red Eye is unique in that it is basically the only conservative answer to many left-leaning successful comedy shows like Real Time with Bill Maher, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. Today’s generation of young information seekers often prefer to be entertained while getting the news and Maher, Stewart and Colbert can often be the only means by which some young people stay informed. Red Eye can serve a similar purpose and fill the comedic void that young conservative-leaning Americans no doubt desire.

That’s true to a point but there’s something bigger and more important to consider here. The mainstream media — and that includes Mediaite — uses the likes of Colbert, Stewart, and SNL as weapons to bludgeon conservatives with. Call it the Tina Fey Factor. These entertainers know and count on the news media viralizing their most potent attacks against the right — and the news media never fails to comply. With a potent talent like Gutfeld in a slot that doesn’t require DVR viewing the next day after the news cycle has already moved on, right-of-center ideas have a real chance at earning a seat at this table.

People who understand the power of satire, especially in the way the mainstream media intentionally amplifies it to damage conservatives, say all the time, “Why don’t we have our Jon Stewart? Why don’t we have our own Stephen Colbert?”

Well, guess what? We do. And it’s time to stop making such a secret of him.

First off, we want to wish Glenn Beck the best in whatever it is he and his media company decide to do next. The way he and Fox News handled the decision to part ways is a model for all in the art of professional dignity — or in the art of doing the complete opposite of what MSNBC does. But as the saying goes, when one door closes another opens and we, the editors of the Bigs, would like to take this opportunity to politely suggest to the powers at Fox News that Red Eye w/Greg Gutfeld is ready for primetime. Actually, strike that. We don’t want to suggest it, we want to declare it. Because it’s a fact.

For over three years now, Greg Gutfeld, TV’s own Andy Levy, Bill Schulz, Pinch, a myriad of fascinating guests from all walks of life, and the Leg Chair, have been producing the best news/satire/interview/comedy show on television. It’s an hour of cool, funny, irreverent, intelligent and informative entertainment, but … it airs at three in the morning. And yet, “Red Eye not only has as dedicated a following as anything on television right now, it’s also been known to pull in more viewers than CNN’s primetime … at three in the morning.

Furthermore, we live in a world where popular entertainment culture rules as much as the news, where Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, and SNL can help to set the national debate and steer the political narrative as much if not more than political newsmakers. Fox News grabbing a piece of this only makes sense from a business, influence and ratings point of view, but for those of us tired of the Hollywood left owning almost every square inch of this valuable turf, having “Red Eye’s” conservative-to-libertarian ideas penetrating this world would be a real breath of fresh air.

There is an untapped market here, somewhere in the, oh, 50% range.

Since 2007, night after night, those of us dedicated to the show have all seen what the Red Eye crew can do with a newspaper puppet, virtual robots, paper unicorns, a full-time ombudsmen (that would be TV’s Andy Levy), and … did we mention the Leg Chair? The talent and ability to sustain a quality show with what must be a budget smaller than whatever Jon Stewart spends on goatee consultants, is not in question, and there’s no reason that same talent and dedication can’t make a successful transition to primetime.

For you “Red Eye” fans worried about what fixing something that currently ticks like a Swiss watch might do to your favorite show, we get that. We also get that a move to a primtime slot would obviously mean changes to the show and change isn’t always good. But keep in mind that Fox News is very, very good at what they do and so is the “Red Eye” gang.

America deserves an alternative to the the Stewarts and Mahers and Lettermans and Tina Feys, and we all know that in a just pop culture world it would be Greg Gutfeld accepting the Mark Twain Prize next year.

“Red Eye” is currently the best kept secret in the world of political satire and we think the time to share that secret has arrived.

The petition is below. Please sign away you signing petition signers, uhm, signatories– See what we mean? There’s only one Greg Gutfeld.
