So on his radio show, Mayor Mike Bloomberg said that the cops won’t enforce the city’s new ban on smoking at beaches and parks.

So, who will?

Us.

That’s right, Bloomie said, quote, “This is going to be enforced by public pressure. [...] Mainly….everybody’s going to turn to you and say, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t be smoking.’ And you know, most people listen.”

Yeah, most people.

He must be referring to smurfs, pixies and tree nymphs. Cuz it ain’t us.

And so we see another example of Bloomie’s mammoth misunderstanding of human nature.

We don’t like busybodies. We don’t like meddlers. And we don’t like jerks butting in over our butts.

More important, everyone knows that the average life span of a snitch, is far shorter than a smoker’s.

People hate snitches more.

Imagine the rise in assaults between these intrusive nitpickers, and drunk vacationing Germans, chain-smoking coke dealers, or worse – angry, short talk show hosts looking for chain-smoking coke dealers.

The sad fact: every effort to manipulate smokers causes a new kind of suffering. When smoking was banned in bars, many closed – and hot, raspy waitresses were out of work.

Fights in front of existing bars increased, among outdoor smokers and sober tourists, causing a rise in nuisance complaints.

I got hit in the face a lot. mainly by me.

But this latest b-s is a sick clue into bloomies psyche – that he would make a law, and expect you to tell the tattooed biker to follow it.

Because Mikey won’t.

He’s too busy licking the salt off your cheeseburger and desperately reapplying it to our roads.

And if you disagree with me, you’re worse than Justin Bieber.

Okay. First of all let me start off by saying that I have been a musician (piano and more recently guitar – and the spoons) since I was a youngster. And very few bands influenced me more than the Fab Four. And of said mop-tops from Liverpool, Paul was my favorite but I always thought John Lennon was a little cooler in his edginess and willingness to explore musically…sometimes brilliantly (“She Said, She Said”) other times embarrassingly (“number 9?…number 9?…number 9?)

It was with great sadness this thirteen year old heard the news from Howard Cosell, thirty years ago today in fact, on Monday Night Football, that he’d been murdered by that scumbag Mark David Chapman. Actually, if I may borrow from Dennis Miller, I take that back for that would be an insult to bags of scum.

Fact: John Lennon changed the music scene for the better and enriched rock-and-roll and all off-shoots from the Sixties onward in a profound way that only a truly gifted artist could. Still, like his partner Paul, John’s music was never quite so there after the Beatles broke up, showing that a unique synergy did exist, even if by the end they were writing by themselves and for themselves.

That last observation is just a hint of honesty that I think is necessary to remember him properly. To eulogize Lennon the man rather than just the music takes some frank talk. And no Lennon song so instills in me the urge to have an adult discussion with the legions of fans who see not just a musician but rather a mystically enlightened figure than his anthem of the hippy pacifist culture: “Imagine.” It is a beautiful piece, elegant in its simplicity of melody. But the lyrics, quite frankly, irk me.

“Imagine no possessions. I wonder if you can.” What I wonder more is whether those who sing this modern-day kumbaya, an homage to an equalitarian society that Orwell would scoff at, are aware that the man who penned these words was worth an estimated $150 million when he died – much if it in real estate, including five apartments claimed in the Dakota co-op on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Three units just for storage—for all those possessions he couldn’t imagine … I guess. It sort of deflates the message, does it not? At least it reveals that, for all his talent, Lennon was at his core a textbook limousine liberal who bounced from four-star hotels, to luxury private jets, to castles in the country and posh penthouses in the glitziest of cities to pontificate his world without class, borders, countries, God or, of course, possessions.

Still, the faux sanctimony of his political and social views do not in my mind diminish by one iota the beauty and sheer musical genius I hear in that incredible whirlwind of creativity and almost vertical artistic development that would bring us from Rubber Soul to the amazing Abbey Road in an astonishingly short span of five years. (Yeah, yeah, I know. They were roughly 1962-70, but the Soul to Road period is when they went ballistic!)

So for me, John Lennon has always been what he truly was. An artist. And that is how he should be remembered. Like other members of the creative class who find so much fault with how the rest of us unenlightened trolls live our lives while never getting a whiff of the aroma of their own hypocrisy, Lennon may have been so lost inside himself that he never bothered to peer through his signature horn-rimmed glasses far enough see the world as it was, and his role as a willing participant in that same world he would have denied others.

All this being said, one’s shortage of political clarity should not lessen our appreciation for him as an extraordinary artist and, more important, a decent chap.

Lennon was both.

And so I plan on going home tonight, chilling out, and maybe, just maybe, allow myself to “turn off my mind, relax and float downstream.”

Thank you, John. You are missed.

George Soros, celebrity hedge fund billionaire and darling of the left, has been a busy man the last fifteen years. While his capitalistic business ventures that began in the 1970s may have brought him his fortune and international financial fame, it’s his activities in the 1990’s that are having the most impact here in America today, on our television and Hollywood movie screens.

We’re especially reminded of this in recent times, as we see the overabundance of falsely portrayed stories on film and video, and at the same time the complete absence of other stories from the mainstream view.

That’s no accident.

Soros gained his political reputation this last decade largely by staunchly opposing the Iraq war and publicly comparing former President George W. Bush to the Nazi Regime. Drawing on his proclaimed expertise on Orwellian propaganda techniques and modern day mind-control marketing, George Soros once vowed to dismantle the conservative infrastructure, a pledge that hoisted him to the mantel of hero to the far-left wing of the Democratic Party. By 2004,dozens and dozens of Soros’ political advocacy organizations had been erected and pumped full of millions of dollars aimed at evicting George W. Bush from the White House.

Soros has devoted a great deal of time and energy to dissecting the reasons why Americans should hate America. He has convinced droves of liberals into believing that we are living in an Orwellian state, warning us that everything from the US government (preceding Obama, of course) is nothing more than propaganda, and that right-leaning news sources are not news, but Orwellian Newspeak. In numerous conferences and symposiums, including this one in 2007 at the NY Public Library, speaking about the role of media in the U.S. today, Soros deems Americans to have been ignorantly shielded by the protection of Newspeak and Nazi-like propaganda filtered to the peripheral conscious mind of Americans through television and Hollywood movie screens.

How ironic, that Soros’ own rhetoric has so often taken on the very tone of conspiracy theory for which the left so famously criticizes the right. Similar footage from 2004 sounds as though it’s literally the same script from which leftists recite today. But whenever his rhetoric is challenged even by political neutrals, Soros repeatedly cites the Bush doctrine and “market fundamentalist propaganda” as his reason for engaging so heavily in the political process. It’s in the name of protecting our open society, Soros claims. The man who’s earned his billions via Capitalism has mastered the art of portraying himself as a world philanthropist who is fighting to protect society from the ills of Nazism and other oppression that he says are inherent of our American Capitalist system.

Meanwhile, the truth is that Soros’ supposed war on propaganda did NOT begin after the US invasion in Iraq, as he says it did. Rather, Soros began his own propagandist endeavors around 1994, when he made a conscious effort to merge his political undertaking with the ultimate purveyor of propaganda – Hollywood. In fact, by his own admission, he established a strategy that incorporated the three largest influencers of human behavior: business, politics, and film and video.

But why would Soros deliberately try to blur this timeline? Why would he keep such a low profile about his early 1990’s dealings and instead use Bush’s Iraq policies to justify his conspiracy theory talk? It starts with Soros’ realization that to execute his Utopian strategy, he would first have to force public opinion to the far left. He himself has often expressed that the best medium for propaganda in the US is through the Hollywood establishment. Before he could force himself into that arena, he’d have to contend with how best to infiltrate and integrate his political beliefs into Hollywood films. To do so, he’d have to get past the conservative values-based Democrats first – by quietly dismantling and then replacing the Democratic Party without average every-day Democrats even knowing it.

The FrontPageMag ran a piece several years ago that describes Soros’ plan perfectly:

Since 1994, he [Soros] had worked with a network of leftwing foundations to fund a $140-million-dollar lobbying drive in favor of “campaign finance reform.” The campaign succeeded in passing the McCain-Feingold Act, which, by outlawing “soft-money” donations, in effect de-funded the Democratic Party. As a result of the Act, the Democratic Party could no longer collect the multi-million-dollar donations from labor unions which were its lifeblood.

Soros stepped in with the Shadow Party to collect the donations instead.

Having driven the Democratic Party to the brink of bankruptcy, Soros then offered to save it.

Right under the noses of the working-class salt of the earth voters that once came from coal mining and farming families, and blessed by Republicans, Soros and his political partners eventually killed off the Democratic party as our grandparents knew it– cunningly replacing it with a new progressive version, installing a new establishment sponsored by liberal investors and Hollywood elites, like Progressive Insurance mogul Peter B. Lewis, Hollywood producer Stephen Bing, and actress Jane Fonda.

From the 7th Floor of the Motion Picture Association of America headquarters in Washington, DC, Soros convened with Shadow Party partners Hillary Clinton and Harold Ickes to map out the support network of their new progressive party, which relied (and still do) most heavily upon ACORN and the public sector labor unions.

In parallel, Soros turned his attention to powerful Hollywood – where his money could be well-spent on integrating his influence into the mainstream.

In 1996, one of Soros’ first Hollywood endeavors was to embrace the power of documentary film. Through his Open Society Institute, he created the Soros Documentary Fund to provide financial support to produce “social justice and human rights documentaries.”

Among the goals of this program is to raise public consciousness about human rights abuses and restrictions of civil liberties, to engage citizens in debate about these issues, and to give voice to diverse speech—all which are crucial to an open society. SDF started awarding grants in 1996 because the visual medium of film and video has enormous potential for effecting social change, increasing awareness and debate on significant human rights issues.

Soros has always fully understood the power of film and video for “effecting social change”, or more accurately, for influencing people’s minds. More recently, Soros described the power of this medium as a propaganda tool:

—–

“…the techniques of deception have been really perfected since [George Orwell's book] 1984. It’s partly the advertising industry that has really sort of [guided], it’s a commercial use that was eventually transferred to politics. And actually, the art of deception has become a science. Because there is cognitive science now, which has some very interesting findings about how the human mind works.

“And these findings actually justify or give a scientific basis for techniques that were sort of developed more as an art. The two key findings of cognitive science [are] that reason and emotion are intricately interconnected, that in fact, there is no reason without emotion, and you can actually overcome reason by appealing to the emotions. And there you have of course the television, which appeals to the emotions much more directly than the linear written word. So the appeal to the emotions is easier than it used to be.”

“…Another element I think is that because of this industry, [the] communications industry, we have become very used to pre-packaged thought. And so we actually use only information that is pre-packaged for us. And when it has been used in politics, there is now a packaging industry. And it does have some similarities to the institute where Winston, the hero of [Orwell's] 1984 worked, the Ministry of Truth.”

“And while you have pluralistic media, you have a parallel method of propaganda which parades as pluralistic media. FOX News is a prime example of that. And because it parades as a mainstream media, it’s accepted as a mainstream media. And deliberate untruths are accepted as one of the pieces of information that you have to consider. So you have FOX News which is ‘Fair and Balanced’ and that of course is Newspeak. And then you have the mainstream media that tries to be fair and balanced, and therefore information coming from Newspeak sources is accepted as one of the ideas that have to be presented. And you have a number of institutes that deliberately manufacture such information.”

We see this today in almost scripted fashion to Soros’ words – categorize something as “Newspeak” and you no longer have to treat it as a real story. The stories that harm the liberal agenda can simply be ignored and need not be presented, rather than introducing them into the content cycle for viewers to filter in or out for themselves. Case in point, the New Black Panthers story. At the same time, outlets that once accused some of manufacturing war propaganda have themselves become the manufacturers of propaganda. Case in point, the left’s portrayal of S.B. 1070, Arizona’s Anti-Illegal-Immigration Bill that was enacted into law earlier this year.

Politics and propaganda make an ugly yet powerful combination.

With such success in the medium of film and video from 1996 to 2001, Soros recognized two things. First, the need to place a buffer between himself and his politically charged documentaries, especially after 9/11, as he was about to embark upon injecting massive financial sums into the political campaign system. Secondly, the opportunity to take this success to the next level by bringing in a Hollywood heavyweight name to headline the program.

Enter Robert Redford.

To be continued in Part 2.

To view Soros’ session from “There You Go Again: Orwell Comes to America” on video in its entirety, it can be found on three videos: Section 1, Section 2 and Section 3.

In just one week on NBC, the detectives on “Law and Order” investigated a cash-for-clunkers scam, a nurse on “Mercy” organized a group bike ride, Al Gore made a guest appearance on “30 Rock,” and “The Office” turned Dwight Schrute into a cape-wearing superhero obsessed with recycling.

Forget product placement, NBC Universal is trying “behavior placement” with some of its shows. Characters from programs such as “30 Rock” and “The Office” are acting out eco-friendly behaviors that advertisers hope will sway viewers. WSJ’s Amy Chozick reports.

Coincidence? Hardly. NBC Universal planted these eco-friendly elements into scripted television shows to influence viewers and help sell ads.

The tactic—General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal calls it “behavior placement”—is designed to sway viewers to adopt actions they see modeled in their favorite shows. And it helps sell ads to marketers who want to associate their brands with a feel-good, socially aware show.

Unlike with product placement, which can seem jarring to savvy viewers, the goal is that viewers won’t really notice that Tina Fey is tossing a plastic bottle into the recycle bin, or that a minor character on “Law and Order: SVU” has switched to energy-saving light bulbs. “People don’t want to be hit over the head with it,” says NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker. “Putting it in programing is what makes it resonate with viewers.”

TV has always had the ability to get millions of people to mimic a beloved character. Ever since Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City” stopped in at the Magnolia Bakery, fans of the show wait in long lines for the once-quiet shop’s $2.75 cupcakes. When Jennifer Aniston as Rachel on “Friends” cut her hair, salons across the country reported requests for the shaggy, highlighted, layered look known as “the Rachel.”

Before we begin…

Perhaps it’s genetic and, because I’m Irish-American, I’m sounding like Joseph McCarthy when he railed against Communism with his Un-American Activities Committee. Plus, with a name like Moriarty, given that’s the “handle” for the major villain in the World of Sherlock Holmes, I’m doubly cursed.

My sometimes awkward efforts to trace the growth of communism in the American performing arts does not have the substantive weight of an historical scholar, but it does have my over-forty years of personal experience behind it.

In an almost childlike way but with plenty of time to ponder my past in film and theater, I offer up a truth that, for me, has only been glimpsed in depth by Glenn Beck.

If, for instance, I have been inaccurate about where Laszlo and Ilsa might have ended up, whether in South America or the United States, the message this hero of the Czechoslovakian Resistance brings will be the same in either continent: continue the work of the International Communist Party.

The hopefully final fruit of such labors is now the radically Left, Obama Presidency.

Given the proven endurance of Communist tenacity for over one hundred years, this American, hybrid version of Marxism called Progressivism, with its added commitment to the eugenics of abortion and the absolute omnipotence of pseudo-Science, yes, this blend of Communism and Nazism, not to mention the hovering lunacy of Islamic terrorism being labeled a “man-made disaster” by the Obama administration, all of this explosive evil in high office demands an explanation.

For those not interested in the war between good and evil but obsessed with where Laszlo and Ilsa finally ended up – in South America or the United States – such a question will, of course, be the solid grounds upon which they can try to discredit the messenger with charges of poor scholarship in the message.

My claims and supporting evidence for the communist infiltration of the performing arts in America can, indeed, be traced even beyond the 100-year-old beginnings of Progressivism in America.

The French Revolution and, as Voltaire described them, its “enlightened despots” or, in this case, the Obama Nation’s Elitists, began, with its communes, the Communist Revolution and its desire to literally tear the French Monarchy to pieces, starting with their royal heads first.

We now have the Obama Czars trampling all over the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, transforming the words “all men are created equal” into “all men are gestated as possible candidates for abortion”.

As a former Liberal myself, I’ll leave it to a supportive voice among the responses to my editorial, Deconstructing “Casablanca,” to state my case for me:

“George Orwell joined the International Brigades as a Communist, but he left Spain as a fervent anti-Communist. He even made a now infamous – infamous for the left, that is – list of people he suspected of being pro-Communist, just like McCarthy did. He saw commies under every bed, too. Later he wrote Animal Farm and 1984.

“As for the movie – during the early 40s only very few people, like Orwell, saw the reality behind the romantic illusions that Stalin’s genius for propaganda had created for the West. Hemingway didn’t see it. Most Hollywood writers didn’t see it. They created a romantic hero with a Communist background (the International Brigades) while Stalin was sending hundreds of thousands of his people to the GULAG and killing a few million Ukranians during the Holodomor.

“In the 1950s Simone Signoret and Yves Montand met Kruschev during a much publicized tour through Russia. This was shortly before or after the invasion of Hungary and a big victory for Communist propaganda. Decades later, both of them apologized publicly. They hadn’t realized that their romantic leftism had been used by the Communists. How about that – honesty and self-reflection, instead of attacking anybody who threatens your illusions.”

I much prefer this comparison of myself to George Orwell than to Joseph McCarthy.

McCarthy had never been a Liberal, as I had, let alone a Communist as Orwell had been.

As for Sherlock Holmes?

I have no doubt the famous detective would now be an ostensibly law-biding Progressive friend of Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and President Barack H. Obama and one of the invited guests at the White House.

Onward to High Noon at the Red River…

In regard to criticisms of the subtitle for one of my editorials for Big Hollywood, Riding the Rhone, I’m sticking – for the sake of a questionable posterity – with my original spelling of Rhone instead of roan because with closer analysis there are profounder inferences for an increasingly Marxist America within the Rhone River than the name of a horse which may or may not be red.

Arriving on earth out of the record-breaking neutrality of Switzerland, the Rhone enters France, where – as I’ve pointed out in my series, America’s French Revolution, the idyllic dreams of communes and Communism began. With a similarly and seemingly harmless idealism within the Obama campaign, our President arose to transform the White House into a Marxist and Maoist Czardom, a totalitarian oxymoron … Communist Czars?! … that actually marries a trinity of Isms, one of which veiled the horrors of eugenics. The other two, Communism and Fascism … well, please read Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism.

Reading a relatively long series of replies to one comment on my editorial, The Christmas of ‘09, I smelled a propaganda rat. The thoughts contained were gruesome and violent … and I said to myself … hmmmm …. sounds like a kind of sabotaging propaganda move, an effort to make conservatives sound bloodthirsty and … well … exactly like the infamous Madame Lafarge of French Revolutionary History.

Hmmm, indeed.

This might be out of the very book that George Soros contributed to: What George Orwell Didn’t Know. The Obama/Soros’ yearly half-a-billion-dollar contribution created very little that Orwell could not anticipate. I love the presumptuous title, though, the Marxist one-ups-man-ship of What George Orwell Didn’t Know … “about us Marxists”.

Regardless of the Sorosian backwash, Riding the Rhone is not only equestrian in its inference but aquatic as well … Riding the Red River … with all of the John Wayne implications and his battles with a new generation of Left-Leaning Americans that title might imply.

This inevitably brings me to the famous Hollywood political differences between John Wayne and Gary Cooper.

There are two films that involved these two great Hollywood stars that clearly defined not only their self-image but their politics as well, Red River and High Noon.

Gary Cooper turned down the role of Thomas Dunson in Red River because he thought the role too ruthless for his own screen image. John Wayne took the role with apparently little hesitation.

As for High Noon and the conflicting stories about a growing feud over it between Wayne and Cooper, the facts are fairly clear. The screenwriter, Carl Foreman, had always thought of himself as living the very showdown which Marshall Will Kane (Gary Cooper) faced. High Noon was intended as an allegory in Hollywood for the failure of Hollywood people to stand up to the House Un-American Activities Committee during the Red-baiting era of Senator McCarthy.

Wayne, in his typically combative fashion, helped produce and starred in Rio Bravo as a direct answer to what he saw as High Noon’s indictment of America in general.

The battles of John Wayne with an increasingly Leftist Hollywood are, without a doubt, on a counter-revolutionary level. He never, however, let his political feelings interfere with what is essentially the very Capitalist adventure that Hollywood has always been. Had he done so, he would never have agreed to appear and accept the Academy Award for High Noon.

Needless to say, the mounting successes of the Hollywood Left have reached their zenith (at this point) with President Barack Obama.

However, none of this could have happened without the Far Left subtext of the Clintons with their fiercely pro-abortion stance and William Clinton’s admitted love for Carl Foreman’s High Noon and his equal admiration for Edmund Wilson’s To The Finland Station. Wilson’s rather ill-considered and romantic view of Vladimir Ilytch Lenin is, I’m grateful to say, pointed out in Professor Louis Menand’s introduction to the most recent edition of To The Finland Station.

Vladimir Nabokov, with whom Wilson eventually feuded, described Lenin as “a pail of the milk of human kindness with a dead rat at the bottom.”

Ahhh, the American Left!

They’re all so brilliant and … Ivy League … and replete with Pulitzers and Rhodes Scholarships and Harvard/Yale degrees and … yes, Nobel Prizes!

They write mesmerizing films and inspire politically active stars … and they never realize how deeply Joseph Stalin is laughing in his grave, knowing full well what I have shared with many of my readers.

Now we have America hanging precipitously on the lip of a bottomless and deceptively tyrannical well called the Progressive New World Order.

The Soros/Obama/MSM/Hollywood/Chicago/New York/Far Left coalition would prefer that the Tea Partiers and 9/12ers and Fox News and Rupert Murdoch’s Counter-Revolutionary Empire sit silently by while the virtually Marxist New World Order is built!

Hmmmm, again!!

The Blue Dogs, however, those Democrats whose knees shake increasingly before they vote Obama Care into a fait accompli?

Blue Dogs have predecessors in Hollywood such as Gary Cooper, legendary stars who had discovered some of the political nightmares they were caught in … increasingly dark.

The first and most publicly challenged of the Hollywood Blue Dogs was Humphrey Bogart.

These Blue Dog Legends, seemingly poised in a kind of Swiss neutrality, were indeed carried by the Rhone River and frequently against their will, into the communes of legendary French Communism … now better known as the Objectives of the American Progressive New World Order.

The Public Broadcasting System’s taxpayer-funded ‘Sesame Street’ has, at cursory glance, presented young American children with what colorfully appears to be one of television’s few safe havens of educational fun.

Yet, embedded in its visually intoxicating muppetry and otherwise innocently entertaining educational content there lurks highly controversial political messages designed to promote multiculturalism and global citizenship:

–

”We all sing with the same voice, the same song, the same voice. We all sing with the same voice and we sing in harmony…

I live in southern France, I’m from a Texas ranch, I come from Mecca and Peru… I come from everywhere, and my name is you…”

That’s right kids! We’re ‘All’ the ‘same’… um, except that we’re all different.

As Orwell deconstructed: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

What next, “Monsters are entitled to their opinions and those opinions deserve equal respect to humans”?

NUTS!

Our tax dollars by the $tens of millions$ have been redistributed to the CPB/PBS for decades to ‘help’ its social change agents reach into our homes and preach the gospel of multiculturalism.

It is both ironic and hypocritical that the folks producing and airing such socially conscious segments for “Sesame Street” would certainly be among the very first to intolerantly decry the holy leftist “separation of church and state!” political canard.

Kermit the frog once sang: “It’s not that easy being green.”

Neither it seems is it that easy for leftists to foment coherent messaging, even towards our kids simmering in the pot. For those that argue, ‘just turn off the TV,’ I agree and that’s all well and good. The trouble is that we are not free to turn off the statist confiscation of our hard earned money that funds this nonsense.

When is the last time God Bless America was sung, or the Pledge of Allegiance recited on ‘Sesame Street?’

Our taxpayer-funded institutions of public education are using everyone’s hard earned dollars to inculcate the anti-American sovereignty values of progressives’ sectarian belief systems (e.g., ‘global citizenship’ & teaching for ‘social justice’).

Public schools are undermining patriotic exercises like the Pledge of Allegiance, while promoting outside political advocacy groups such as the American Bar Association to instruct ‘Pledge of Tolerance’ lesson plans.

The American president misappropriates Department of Education funds to produce a lesson plan designed to marginalize children away from their parents to Serve.gov himself as their iconic leader.

The National Education Association is recommends Saul Alinsky texts while hawking the president’s government control of health care.

The First Lady is peddling her little agrarian gardens.

The National Endowment for the Arts is being exploited to promote one-sided legislative agendas.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is producing anti-American-values-propaganda disguised as education.

Americans should demand the withdrawal of funding from divisive social justice organizers and educators whose goal is to subvert the family and our national motto, E Pluribus Unum.

It’s human nature to remember God when we’re in big trouble. Even agnostics offered up a prayer that day. We needed super human help from a higher power to defeat the Enemy Without.

God answered our prayers, and along with the excellent leadership of Bush, Cheney, our fantastic military, and superb FBI and CIA, we have been safe for eight years. Thank you.

Now we need that Divine help to defeat the Enemy Within.

Strangely, our present White House and Capitol seem to be crawling with sneaky subversives who are intent on destroying capitalism, freedom and the American Way as we know it. They have lots of different labels and labels that keep changing. They are like a cancer that slowly eats it’s way across the healthy host until it is fat enough to kill it.

When I was 12 years old, I was warned of Communism and required to read “1984″ by George Orwell. I hated the dark, sinister story of a free country that turned bad. I wanted to think about The Carpenters, and Bread, and how to get my hair to look like Farrah Fawcett. My high school was Christian, so we were aware of spiritual warfare, invisible enemies. We were taught that the 2nd Amendment, the right to “bear arms” would prevent a military takeover. Instead, they said, the Communists would try to destroy us “from within” by encouraging sin in our youth. Promiscuous Sex, Drugs, Rock ‘n Roll, and a disrespect for authority would render our citizens helpless and weak. (Rap and it’s profanity hadn’t been invented yet.) This subtle, invisible, inward takeover was more powerful. Apathy, lack of education, lack of a family unit…lack of God.

II Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” We had to memorize that Bible verse and I still know it by heart today. I graduated in 1976, the Bicentennial of our country, so we were wearing red, white, and blue bell bottoms when we recited that verse at graduation.

Now, every day, minute by minute, I have been watching the prophetic fiction of “1984″ become reality. My voice is irritating, but I’ve been squawking like a rooster, to my fellow Americans, “Wake Up! Wake Up!” I think it’s starting to work.

There is a painting of our first Congress humbly praying to God.

When I see Obama brag ”I have a gift,” “I just wanna spread the wealth,” or ”The police acted stupidly” or lie “My health plan will not add one dime to the deficit. It will not fund abortions or insure illegals.” When I see Pelosi sneer ”un-American, Astro-turf,” or ex-Czar Van Jones say, “Republicans are A–holes,” I replace those images with the image of our leaders humbly praying to God for help. This is my dream.

Then, I roll out of bed, humbly get on my knees and pray. “Help!”

Hollywood has, for the last thirty years or so, made military members the butts of jokes – they’re either crazy Vietnam vets (Rambo) or corrupt institutionalists (The Hulk). But most of all, they’re victims (see Platoon). They’re victims of uncaring governments, of obtuse generals, of racist politicians.

Such portrayal couldn’t be further from the truth. Since the end of the draft, America’s military men and women have courageously volunteered to defend our country; they have put themselves in harm’s way for a higher purpose than themselves. They aren’t selfish or stupid – or dupes, as John Kerry suggested (“You know education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don’t you get stuck in Iraq.”). They are heroes. As Orwell put it, “We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” And today’s soldiers have trained themselves to be rough and ready; they haven’t been coerced or forced. If the highest sacrifice is the sacrifice by choice, these men and women make the highest sacrifice every day.

Few books in history, if any, have left such a powerfully lingering effect with their last four words as the classic tale of a totalitarian nightmare by Eric Blair (aka George Orwell), ’Nineteen Eighty-Four’: “He Loved Big Brother.” In those four words, the utter destruction of a human being, and by extension humanity itself, was complete. The novel remains a most dark and compelling tale, and is even taught as a full course in many college classrooms.

John Hurt in Michael Radford’s ‘1984′

The essential fact, the very heart of the matter, in George Orwell’s timeless classic is “the ability to say two plus two equals four. If than can be done, all else follows.” Yet the nightmare Big Brother regime of ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ must by necessity keep redoing the math, even as it keeps rewriting history. Those who do the correct math, and refuse to see the equation otherwise, are the greatest dangers to Big Brother’s existence and are doomed to suffer fates worse than death.

Could not the loss of Winston Smith’s very soul to Big Brother in ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ not truly be worse than death? It is, in fact, a living death. At least until they fully cure Winston Smith with a bullet, an inevitable outcome that is only implied at the end of the novel.

Since that forever age long ago in 1948 when George Orwell penned his last and most important cautionary tale, the world has seen countless interpretations of Orwell’s worst fears. In fact, it has seen them in Orwellian fashion. In the year 1984 itself, the then-Soviet Union accused America of being Orwell’s Big Brother. It was rather difficult for Russians of the time to interpret that analogy, as the book was banned throughout the Soviet Union. Most Orwellian indeed.

But there was yet another stark development for Orwell’s classic in that infamous year synonymous with omnipotent and omniscient terror. Writer-Director Michael Radford tackled Orwell’s nightmarish vision for the big screen and won. Starring John Hurt as the doomed Winston Smith, Suzannah Hamilton as his equally doomed lover Julia, and Richard Burton in his final and most chilling performance as the cold and sinister O’Brien, Michael Radford managed to transport the terrors of the novel in toto to film.

A haunting original score by the Eurythmics is the black icing on this unpalatable celluloid cake.

It is now celebrating a quarter-century of existence, which is a very good sign indeed. And its importance could not be more significant in our twisted Age of Unreason, where declaring two plus two equals four is a major inconvenience to many in politics, the media and show biz.

In fact, isn’t that ongoing math problem by Hollywood movers and shakers a main reason many of us here now congregate at Big Hollywood? To counter and call to the Carpet of Truth film icons like Annette Bening when she praises women’s rights in Iran? A true Orwellian oxymoron, if ever there was one.

As a Bonus Prize, I have found Michael Radford’s brilliant film adaptation, performed by some the finest actors ever to stand in front of a camera, free for viewing and download at Google Video. No excuse not to see it now. Yet as great a film as it is, I doubt you’ll be thanking me later.

But that’s the whole point. Peace and Freedom, Everyone

In the past few days there have been several reports about officials, high and low, using new politically correct language to describe things which have been around awhile. The best example is the new head of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, refusing to use the word “terrorist.” She preferred describing terrorist actions as “Man Caused Disasters.” The problem with politically correct speech is that it hides the obvious. Even Big Freakin’ Hillbillies like me understand an illegal immigrant is someone who broke the law to get into this country. We of simple minds get confused when folks from the Ivy League start describing them as “migrants.” To us, migrants are plain spoken folk, those who waited in line, did the right thing and came here in accordance with our laws.

In order for us morons on the right to understand the newspeak of the Obama administration I offer this glossary of terms before and after being “Obamized.” Feel free to add to my list while you are still able.
