Not many bold faced names expressed any outrage, which is not that surprising as Hollywood is a liberal town, after all. That was left to folks on the other end of the political aisle, such as presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich who took to Twitter to decry the decision….
Here’s a look at some of the best responses to the news.
Olivia Wilde
Woohoo!! Die Prop 8 Die!!!! 9th Circuit just ruled you unconstitutional. Next step Supreme Court!
Seth MacFarlane
Prop 8 architects: Every civil rights battle is eventually won by the oppressed party. Save your hundred mil and buy some Bud platinum.
Celebrities make strange bedfellows, and rising starlet Olivia Wilde may be one of the few souls rushing to defend Kim Kardashian after the reality star’s blink-and-you-missed-it marriage.
Wilde, recently divorced herself, tried to shush the commoners from being too critical of Kardashian’s 72-day marriage.
The “Butter” star, who finalized her own high-profile divorce from Italian aristo Tao Ruspoli last month, told us at a Standard Hotel after-party for “Another Happy Day,” “I empathize. It’s not easy. It’s the hardest thing in the world. People judge you because divorce is seen as failure. [Kim] took a risk. No one should be attacking her. Our attention should be focused on things that are truly scandalous.”
Hmmm. Wilde’s marriage, while not the “Happily Ever After” variety, did last for eight years. That’s an eternity in Hollywood. The bigger question is, why can’t we judge a woman who treats the institution of marriage like another insipid reality show plot?

The stars of two recent films mirroring elements of the Occupy Wall Street movement, “In Time” and “Tower Heist,” couldn’t be happier to throw their arms around the alleged 99 percent.
“The movie is a comment on the inequalities that are crushing 99 percent of the people in our society,” “in Time” co-star Olivia Wilde told Fox411.
Something else is in play of late, a sign that the nascent movement may not have pop culture on its side after all. This week featured three OWS slams, one from a not so unlikely source but two that took entertainment consumers by surprise.
It was only a matter of time before the “South Park” gang took on OWS, and the results pulled no punches. But who would have expected a liberal like Stephen Colbert to use his comic pulpit to mock the movement?
The latest OWS insult comes courtesy of “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” and it’s the harshest one yet. The film depicts Harold (John Cho) as a Wall Street executive forced to dodge angry protesters outside his office building. The protesters are a surly lot, angry and unfocused, and they hurl eggs at Harold’s hapless assistant who endures the barrage to protect his boss.
Those “mostly peaceful” protesters weren’t done yet.

It’s been six years since Andrew Niccol seated himself in a director’s chair; after the powerful Gattaca (1997), misfire S1m0ne (2002), and sleeper Lord of War (2005), the inventive writer is headed back to the big screen with another original sci-fi concept, In Time. A couple trailers have already dropped; this sizzle reel does a good job introducing the heady premise without giving away exactly where the story will go (I hope).

The biggest reason I’m pulling for the film is Andrew Niccol’s name. In a market full of adaptations, remakes, reboots, prequels, sequels, and any combination of those categories, Niccol remains committed to telling original stories through the medium of film. Both Gattaca and The Truman Show had all the qualities of great literature, yet video was an absolutely integral element of their storytelling. Barring Sucker Punch (haven’t seen it), the last time Hollywood offered a completely original blockbuster like this was Inception, and I welcome any attempts to make it the rule and no longer the exception.
The Brave New World-esque universe he’s created here is intriguing, and the concept of a world where every action you take temporarily staves off death shows he’s exploring weighty themes through speculative fiction, not just “ooh shiny future stuff!” sci-fi. It appears Niccol’s taken a far more action-oriented approach than his earlier films, so it’ll be interesting to see how well he does. He’s recruited cinematographer and longtime Coen brothers collaborator Roger Deakins, and most of the action shots appear wide and/or steady, so I’m not worried about the kind of shaky-cam anarchy common to untested action directors (I’m looking at you, Marc Forster). Last weekend, your choices of new movies at the box office came down to watching apes try to act human in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” and watching grown human men try to act like apes in “The Change-Up.” Actually, some of the behavior these guys wallow in would be an insult to apes, as “The Change-Up” traffics in some of the grossest, laziest, most self-indulgent bad behavior and horrid tastelessness of just about any mainstream film I’ve ever seen – and I’m no prude: “There’s Something About Mary” and “Animal House” are among my top five favorite movies.
The premise of “The Change-Up” alone seems like a copycat of the slew of body-switching comedies that flooded theaters in the late 1980s (“Big,” “Like Father Like Son,” “18 Again,” “Dream a Little Dream,” and “Vice Versa,” to name a few). And to add to the sense of laziness, it stars Jason Bateman in what’s starting to appear to be his Movie of the Month Club, playing an uptight corporate lawyer who can’t seem to get a promotion — virtually the same character he played just a month ago in “Horrible Bosses.”
Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds reverts to the crude shenanigans of his breakthrough film “Van Wilder” in playing a constantly stoned slacker whose idea of a big break is landing a role in a soft-core porn flick. One wishes immediately that both they and the filmmakers – who are talented in the R-rated comedy genre, as Jon Lucas and Scott Moore created the first “Hangover” and David Dobkin directed “Wedding Crashers” – had followed their own title and attempted to create a film that relied more on clever writing and reinventing the body-switching subgenre than just attempting to push the envelope until it’s torn wide open and shredded to pieces. The left constantly reminds us on the right that we are corporate shills playing the politics of fear while they preach hope and represent the little guy. That’s what they say, of course, but what do they do? Since you asked…
They trot out a rich, beautiful Hollywood actress set to star in a $170M Disney blockbuster and the guy from “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and put them in a PSA backed by a George Soros-funded advocacy organization to tell us, ever so subtly, that if we vote GOP this Tuesday, it could mean the end of humanity.(more…)
A couple weeks ago I wondered aloud where Hollywood was in the health care debate. And almost on command, this video appeared. It looks like the NEA’s call for artists to promote health care initiatives has been heard by some comedy artists.
Hollywood superstar Will Ferrell is surrounded by eight “celebrities” in a satirical defense of the health insurance companies.
And I use the term “celebrities” loosely. One is the only recognizable character from the cult series “Heroes,” another is a star of a popular cable series that was recognized at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, another is a star of a cable series that nobody ever watches, one is from Comedy Central’s Reno 911, another is his best friend, one is the star of the hit movie franchise “Scooby-Doo,” and to give the clip credibility, two of the “celebrities” actually play doctors on TV. I will give a prize to anyone who can name all eight without using Google®. (more…)
