So the White House Correspondents Dinner came and went, and once again your charming host was not invited. No matter – I had other plans – that pint of Ben and Jerry’s wasn’t going to climb into bed and eat itself, as I quietly sob to the final season of Men in Trees (I had pressed my paisley shorty robe for just the occasion).

Anyway, it appears the press is making much of Wanda Sykes – which is hilarious, because she performed the way you’d expect her to perform. And that makes me think that these reports of outrage were written before the outrage actually registered. I mean – the room was packed with reporters, and Sykes made jokes about conservatives. The stories about angry conservatives are like a model airplane kit – all the parts were there, just glue them together.

But I can’t see much to get angry about. I mean, if there’s ever been a more predictable Saturday night, I’ve yet to hear about it.

Palin joke? Check.

Rush Limbaugh joke? Check.

Steer clear of any gay stuff about marriage and the military? From what Breitbart told me over the phone, check.

Now, for a gay comic like Wanda, you’d think that last part might have been a priority for teasing, but come on: it’s just bad taste to actually make a joke that might stick, especially if the target is your Messiah.

So instead, Wanda did what Wanda was supposed to do – tell jokes that meet the assumptions of those folks in the room. But it’s a real shame that the one joke that’s getting all the play wasn’t even hers. Remember, Bill Maher had wished Rush dead on his show over a year ago.

She needs to steal from better comedians.

Tonight’s guests: the delightful Kevin Godlington, the charming Sandra Smith, and Clayton Morris.
