			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As overly serious police procedurals have begun to saturate the primetime network TV schedules, the FOX network has quietly but wisely been exploring alternatives. Introduced a few years ago, the highly popular <em>House</em> varied the formula by moving it to a medical setting, and last year <em>Fringe</em> interestingly revived the delight in adventure characteristic of mid-1960s network TV dramas. </p>

<p>The new drama <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1327801/">Glee</a></em> (Wednesdays, 9 p.m EDT) represents another approach and a bolder break with current trends&#8211;and it may point the way toward a welcome increase in variety among network TV dramas. </p>
<p>Produced by Ryan Murphy (<em>Nip/Tuck</em>), <em>Glee</em> tells the story of high school teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) a married high school teacher in his thirties, who wants to restore McKinley High School&#8217;s glee club to its former glory, achieved when he was a member during his high school years and the club won the nationals. <span id="more-232130"></span></p>
<p>Unfortunately, glee is now way out of style and is just about the lowest rung on the school&#8217;s status ladder. But Will is not one to be easily stopped, even by the school&#8217;s powerful cheerleading coach, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), who hates the glee club and wants it stopped.</p>
<p>The presentation of high school status issues and depictions of how peer pressure paradoxically enforces conformity to an odd mix of rebellious attitudes is both insightful about high school and American society in general, where the media and much of the culture tend to function like the higher-status kids in high school, enforcing a foolish, unfocused sense of rebellion and entitlement. </p>
<p>Schuester, on the other hand, exemplifies what makes a good teacher: he takes great joy in developing young people&#8217;s talents&#8211;and the singing of the glee club is so entertaining that it induces the audience to share that feeling. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re all here for the same reason: because we want to be good at something,&#8221; says Finn Hudson, a glee club member and star quarterback who is forced to stand up to his coach and teammates in order to take part in the club, because of its unacceptably low status in the school&#8217;s social hierarchy. </p>
<p>That scene, from the pilot episode, exemplifies the kind of drama and meaning the producers are able to find in this seemingly inhospitable subject. </p>
<p>If comparisons to Disney&#8217;s <em>High School Musical</em> movies are inevitable, <em>Glee</em> can stand the heat. Its greater realism and recognition of the economic and social limitations of small-town life move <em>Glee </em>significantly beyond a mere show-biz story. </p>
<p>In fact, the show of which <em>Glee</em> is most reminiscent is <em>Friday Night Lights,</em> the brilliant DirecTV/NBC drama series centered on a Texas small-town high school football team. Each show looks sympathetically but realistically at a social organization in an American high school and extracts drama and real social insights. <em>Glee</em> includes a good deal more humor than <em>Friday Night Lights</em>, and is less inclined toward the tragic view evident in that show, but the result is the same: a show that&#8217;s both enjoyable and edifying. </p>
<p><em>Glee</em> could be misconstrued as making some political points or working toward progressive notions of social transformation, but so far that hasn&#8217;t been its emphasis. It&#8217;s true, for example, that the season premiere, &#8220;Showmance,&#8221; mocks teenage celibacy programs and caters to the myth that public schools teachers are underpaid. It also includes an exceedingly vulgar song-and-dance sequence. </p>
<p>Similarly, traditionalists might be tempted to take offense at the presence of so many references to homosexuality in the show, which could be taken as advocacy of it. One of the glee club members, Rachel, has &#8220;two daddies,&#8221; as the saying goes, and another, Kurt, reveals that he&#8217;s a homosexual, in episode two, &#8220;Acafellas.&#8221; Yet that is simply a function of the show&#8217;s realism: one could very well expect those particular kids to be among the few who would gravitate toward the high school glee club, given the low status of the group. Those of already low status have less to lose. </p>
<p>In addition, all of the episodes shown so far have mocked political correctness shibboleths and satirized moral failings such as disloyalty, selfishness, and dishonesty. Although <em>Glee</em> displays a certain amount of surface sympathy with contemporary moral relativism, it&#8217;s really showing sympathy with the individuals, not their failings, and the first three episodes of the show suggest that it&#8217;s on the right side regarding general moral principles. </p>
<p>Fox is taking a chance by going against contemporary TV drama conventions, but the rewards could be worth it&#8211;for network and audience alike.</p>

<p>When the new Fox show “Glee” (Fox Wednesdays at 9/8 c)  had a special sneak preview premiere in the spring, many television critics loved it. It had a unique and exciting premise, quirky characters and a spirit of fun and outlandishness that is often missing in contemporary comedy shows. With its musical interludes, it also seemed like a great addition to the Fox schedule that will soon, once again, include the hit reality show “American Idol.” Unfortunately, the first three new episodes of &#8220;Glee&#8221; that have aired this fall have not lived up to the high expectations that the outstanding sneak preview premiere created for the show, causing some disappointment. However, &#8220;Glee,&#8221; even with its faults, is still a fun and unique comedy with a great cast and an engaging premise. </p>

<p>As can be expected from the title, the show is about a high school glee club. The show began with a high school teacher Will Schuester (the immensely likable Matthew Morrison) realizing how much he loved performing in his own glee club and wanting to inspire a new glee club of students. The show revolves around that ragtag group of singers as they work together under the leadership of Schuester.  </p>
<p>The show itself is bursting with quirky and fun characters including the deliciously conniving cheer-leading coach Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch) who plots to destroy the glee club and Schuester&#8217;s well-meaning but manipulative wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) . In addition to Sylvester and Terri Schuester, the supporting cast is full of such unique secondary characters that it rivals shows like &#8220;The Office&#8221; for its strong ensemble cast. <span id="more-230418"></span> When the show had its sneak preview in the spring, critics applauded it. Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker <a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20278594,00.html">wrote</a> the following about the show in May: “Has there ever been a TV show more aptly named than <strong>Glee</strong>? It both embodies and inspires exactly that quality.” <a href="http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/blog/2009/05/review_39glee39.html">A Boston.com article </a>in that same month noted that &#8220;the dominant note in &#8216;Glee&#8217; is comedy, the production numbers are vibrant, and the cast is consistently winning. If Murphy can make the rest of the series as persuasive as the pilot, he may have a lot of people feeling &#8216;Glee&#8217; in the fall.&#8221;</p>
<p>Several months later, the show has been a bit disappointing in its newest episodes that have aired this fall.  Variety.com writer Brian Lowry recently <a href="http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117940959.html?categoryid=32&amp;cs=1&amp;nid=2562">wrote the following about such disappointment</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>The promise and energy associated with the debut of &#8220;Glee&#8221; last spring largely evaporates in previewing two additional hours, where the musical numbers &#8212; generally less infectious and buoyant than the first time out &#8212; can’t compensate for overly broad characterizations and absurdly soapy situations…</p>
<p>Put simply, &#8220;Glee&#8221; strikes too many sour notes for a series with precious little margin for error.</p></blockquote>
<p>I can completely understand Lowry’s analysis about the show and I agree that the spring episode of the show stands high above the recent episodes of the program in terms of quality. After hitting a high note in its spring episode, the show has admittedly suffered. Now, it seems to be struggling to find its full unique identity.</p>
<p>However, call me an idealist but I <em>do</em> continue to support the show in spite of its weaknesses. The show has a strong cast, which includes a sensational villain in Jane Lynch&#8217;s Sylvester and a great premise that can carry it through its rough early episodes. The show continues to be humorous and unique in its exploration of the formation of the glee club and I am looking forward to see more of it in the coming weeks.</p>
<p>Although the show is not as funny as it was in its sneak preview, it is still a hysterical show that TV Guide’s Matt Roush recently <a href="http://www.tvguidemagazine.com/matt-roush-daily-review/the-new-season-glee-2265.html">described as </a>&#8220;that rarest of rarities in network prime time: an absolute original, an authentic musical comedy that’s as outrageously funny as it is irresistibly tuneful.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the conclusion of the preview episode of &#8220;Glee,&#8221; after the teacher leading the  glee club leaves his post, the group of glee club students sing &#8220;Don&#8217;t Stop Believing&#8221; onstage as a newly formed team. Unsurprisingly, at the end of the song, the teacher returns to the team ready to believe in the glee club and their mission once again.</p>
<p>Despite its faults, &#8220;Glee&#8221; (the show, like the club itself) remains something that is worth believing in.</p>

<p>Proving once again its claim to the hotly contested title of Stupidest Television Network, ABC has canceled &#8220;The Goode Family&#8221; and &#8220;Surviving Suburbia,&#8221; continuing their business strategy of desperately trying new things and failing to give them a chance to succeed.</p>
<p>No wonder the cab/sat USA Network actually beat ABC (and the CW network) in <a href="http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=20090811usa01" target="_blank">the national ratings last week</a>. USA&#8217;s formula of original series with unusual but likable characters and sound values carries consistently impressive audience appeal.</p>
<p>Although the ABC cancellations were expected&#8211;given the fact that the network had brilliantly moved both series to Friday night, a network television Dead Zone, thus guaranteeing that the shows would not be able to generate an audience over time&#8211;they nonetheless prove that ABC hates anything with decent values and ideas and cannot appreciate good, solid entertainment with real sense (Castle being the rare exception).<span id="more-207446"></span></p>
<p>Expertly produced by Mike Judge (&#8221;Beavis and Butthead,&#8221; &#8220;King of the Hill,&#8221; &#8220;Office Space&#8221;), <a href="http://stkarnick.com/blog2/2009/05/another_goode_work_by_mike_jud.html" target="_blank">the animated sitcom &#8220;The Goode Family&#8221;</a> expertly satirized the conformist, braindead nature of much Green thinking and brilliantly identified the movement&#8217;s evolution into a commercialized lifestyle. Judge and co. also made merciless fun of countless other aspects of lefty conventional thinking, such as the passion for being seen as encouraging homosexuality and supporting public radio and other big-government nonsense.</p>
<p>They accomplished all this, moreover, while managing to make the central characters likable in spite of the silliness of their pursuits, by emphasizing their good intentions.</p>
<p>Naturally, Disney-owned ABC, widely known as the &#8220;gayest&#8221; network and a tireless promoter of statist hedonism, couldn&#8217;t tolerate the program once it realized what Judge and co. were actually delivering.</p>
<p>Given the high expense of animated shows, it&#8217;s unlikely that &#8220;The Goode Family&#8221; will be picked up by a cable network. It would seem perfect for Fox, of course, but that network seems committed to destroying the last semblances of taste and common sense in this society through its presentation of Seth McFarlane animated shows such as &#8220;Family Guy&#8221; and &#8220;American Dad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Like &#8220;The Goode Family,&#8221; <a href="http://stkarnick.com/blog2/2009/05/surviving_suburbia_morality.html" target="_blank">the Bob Saget sitcom &#8220;Surviving Surburbia</a>&#8221; was a sprightly, often satirical comedy which <a href="http://stkarnick.com/blog2/2009/05/surviving_suburbia_morality.html" target="_blank">promoted sound values</a>. Naturally, it couldn&#8217;t last on the network that has long promoted itself as the youthful, innovative, clever alternative but has in fact become a stagnant, boring bastion of statist hedonism.</p>
<p>Coming after the cancellation of the interesting and appealingly unconventional police comedy-drama &#8220;The Unusuals,&#8221; the jettisoning of &#8220;The Goode Family&#8221; and &#8220;Surviving Suburbia&#8221; show that even as it plunges ever-further into the ratings basement, ABC refuses to deviate from its evident mission of pushing modern liberalism instead of providing good, appealing television.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As Big Hollywood&#8217;s self-proclaimed <em>Arrested Development</em> Superfan, it is my sacred obligation to make fellow enthusiasts aware of <a href="http://arresteddevelopmentdoc.com/">The Arrested Development Documentary Project</a>, which just recently came to my attention.  The film&#8217;s website is a bit confusing, especially when it comes to ascertaining where and when one might actually see it, but the trailer seems promising (be forewarned, Keith Olbermann makes an appearance):</p>

<p>My major problem with these talent shows is they try to give the impression that all of the contestants are just diamonds in the rough that took an hour off from the Burger King to come down and give it a shot. The people at &#8220;American Idol&#8221; want you to believe they have discovered some guy with a day gig and a dream and they helped polish up their act and transformed them into stars. Adam Lambert and Kris Allen did not go stand in line with the rest of the mob. They were somehow pre-screened and told when and where to report. Is there anyone in American who thinks that Adam Lambert wasn’t a professional singer before he was on &#8220;American Idol?&#8221;<span id="more-138086"></span></p>
<p>The same is true of NBC’s &#8220;Last Comic Standing.&#8221; The people who are going to make the top twenty or ten or whatever it is are all long time professional comics. Many already have deals in place with NBC, or an agent and a manager before they “audition” to be on the show.</p>
<p>Here’s my point, after a certain point the show gets boring for me because all of the people have chops and a reasonable shot at winning. After a point in the elimination rounds all of the people on the show are already show business professionals who are acting out a charade for your entertainment.</p>
<p>I have noticed an embarrassing trend on the show this year. A few times this season if the “star” guest singer had been in the competition they would have been voted off of the show! Several of the guests were, as Randy Jackson might put it, a little pitchy.</p>
<p>Enjoy the final results tonight &#8220;American Idol&#8221; fans, and rest easy because no matter who comes out on top they are both going to have great careers. Besides the real winner has already been determined, the producers of &#8220;American Idol&#8221; and Fox who are raking in billions.</p>
<p>Hey Congress, how about a windfall profits tax?</p>

<p>Or, by its Hollywood acronym, RATS. Funny. I actually found that startling contraction fitting, not for Roxana (<a href="http://www.persiancultures.com/Politics/Roxana_saberi/Roxana_saberi.jpg">not</a> <a href="http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00Mg6vK5319RX/610x.jpg">hardly</a>), but for all of the major black hats and clueless morons who populated this nerve-wracking Thugocracy Studios production, which had civilized people everywhere both riveted and outraged in its most <a href="http://www.poligazette.com/2009/04/27/roxan-saberi-very-weak-vows-to-continue-hunger-strike/">grueling</a> and suspenseful moments.</p>

<p>Not to mention for Roxana and her parents. But before we get to heroes and villains, let us look at the story to date with all its dramatic twists and underpinnings, many with significant international implications. Just like a good Hitchcock drama should. And I caught &#8216;em all!</p>
<p>By pure happenstance, Your Most Humble Critic and Boy Reporter was already hot on the job <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/user/210829/news?p=2">covering</a> Iran (unlike <a href="http://worldblog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/03/17/92947.aspx">some</a> people) and <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/268391">hammering</a> AMPAS for their tea and finger-cookie soirees <a href="http://www.tehrantimes.com/Index_view.asp?code=190354">with</a> <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jtsimpson/2009/03/11/the-true-state-of-film-culture-in-todays-iran/">these</a> <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/268629">guys</a>, when I saw what Iran was pulling with Roxana and <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/269106">called</a> it for what it was: a hostage crisis. And on the same day HRW called it the same in a <a href="http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2009/03/13/iran-illegal-detention-iranian-american-journalist">press release</a> on March 13th, which I didn&#8217;t find out until the 19th thanks to our <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;q=media+teabagging+jokes&amp;btnG=Search">on-the-ball</a> Vein Stream Media.<span id="more-132142"></span></p>
<p>Even then I had to <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/269454">look</a>. But HRW called it on the 13th based on international law. I called it the same day from knowing Iran <a href="http://www.hrw.org/en/reports/2008/01/06/you-can-detain-anyone-anything-0">too</a> goddamn <a href="http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.org/documents/hostages.phtml">well</a>. Why not test Obama? See what he&#8217;s made of? They&#8217;ve tested every other US president since Carter, and let&#8217;s face it. Obama <a href="http://www.google.com/#hl=en&amp;q=iran+responds+death+to+america+Obama+video&amp;fp=ICVP5FShbzg">ain&#8217;t</a> scarin&#8217; <a href="http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/gerald_warner/blog/2009/04/06/barack_obama_the_rabbit_in_north_koreas_headlights_is_jimmy_carter_ii">nobody</a> right now.</p>
<p>Fortunately, this particular but not totally <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebanon_hostage_crisis">unexpected</a> production of Iranian political theater has now ended with Iran&#8217;s magnanimous &#8216;gift&#8217; of Roxana Saberi&#8217;s freedom. You know. Like the British getting their Easter <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17944210/">&#8216;gift&#8217;</a> of their own sailors back. My heroes. The Easter Bunny&#8217;s got nothin&#8217; on them, huh?</p>
<p>Though President Obama called Iran&#8217;s merciful end to this sordid and cruel international affront &#8216;a humanitarian gesture&#8217;, it has been anything but from the beginning. If anything, this tormenting episode of international injustice and flouting of the law should prove just how unworthy a diplomatic partner Iran is. See, diplomacy requires both sides to be civilized to work, and the backstory on Iran&#8217;s regime, as with Roxana&#8217;s story there, is as uncivilized as it gets.</p>
<p>And let&#8217;s be clear here. I am not advocating war with Iran, though what they&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/khobar.htm">done</a> and <a href="http://gaycitynews.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=18383191&amp;BRD=2729&amp;PAG=461&amp;dept_id=568864&amp;rfi=8">continue</a> <a href="http://www.google.com/#hl=en&amp;q=iran+girl+stoning&amp;fp=ry0_Tod3DXA">to do</a> makes me <a href="http://www.google.com/#hl=en&amp;q=children+on+death+row+Iran&amp;fp=ry0_Tod3DXA">feel</a> very warlike. But I am advocating that the ugly truths about Islamist extremist Iran be put on display for all to see. Nobody else seems to be interested in covering Iran&#8217;s abominable human rights situation. Is that too much to ask from Your Most Humble and Obedient Critic? Despite the nightmare we, Roxana and her parents had to endure, Roxana&#8217;s one of the lucky ones.</p>
<p>In order to understand RATS in toto, we must look at the whole backstory of Islamist Iran since 1979 to put Roxana Saberi&#8217;s ordeal into its proper context today. I&#8217;ve been following Islamist extremist Iran for thirty long years, starting with the US Embassy Hostage Crisis on November 4th, 1979.  See, I knew that date because I was due by legal contract to head for boot camp on November 13th, which I did. You remember things like that. You know. Heading for boot camp, heading for war.</p>
<p>Especially when it was peacetime when you signed up.</p>
<p>It sure looked like war at the time. Yet strangely, war didn&#8217;t happen. President Carter was too busy gnawing his nails down to the knuckles for 444 days, with one <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Eagle_Claw">abortive</a> rescue mission in between gnawings. If I were President back then, I would have at least started taking out Iran&#8217;s military facilities with B-52s if we didn&#8217;t get the hostages back. Ronnie got &#8216;em back right away after he became President on January 20th, 1981. I think they knew The Gipper would have bombed them to Hell to free our hostage citizens. He was that kinda <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFves5XqBJU">guy</a>.</p>
<p>A smart move on Iran&#8217;s part. But even Reagan suffered greatly from the Iranian thugocracy&#8217;s proxy terror attacks from Hezbollah, like the Marine Barracks bombing in Lebanon that killed 241 US servicemen on an international peacekeeping mission there. See, Iran just moved their terrorization of Americans and others into the shadows, letting their Brownshirt Hamas and Hezbollah goons do all the dirty work outside Iran. You know. Like Hitler&#8217;s <a href="http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?ModuleId=10005130">used to do</a>.</p>
<p>In fact, every president since Carter has been <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/268854">tormented</a> by Iran, <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=Iran+burn+Obama">Obama</a> <a href="http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.2b0b8bd405048e19f36fa896834ca058.9b1&amp;show_article=1">no</a> <a href="http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/03/iran_responds_death_to_america.asp">less</a>. Clinton had the Khobar Tower bombings in 1995. For W, it was Iran-paid and trained militias and <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;q=Iran+EFP+Iraq&amp;btnG=Search">EFP IEDs</a> in Iraq, <a href="http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1588135,00.html">killing</a> and wounding <a href="http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/how-iran-is-killing-us-troops-in-iraq/">hundreds</a> of American soldiers. No Hope For Change with Obama on that score <a href="http://www.speroforum.com/a/18871/Iran-escalates-proxy-war-in-Iraq">either</a>, it would seem. Or with Iran&#8217;s <a href="http://www.captainsjournal.com/2009/04/30/iran-and-taliban-missiles/">supplying</a> the Taliban with <a href="http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=91795&amp;sectionid=351020101">weapons</a>.</p>

Iran&#8217;s thugocracy is currently being held accountable for the worst <a href="http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Terrorism/argentina.html">terror attacks</a> in Argentina&#8217;s history, including one former Iranian &#8216;diplomat&#8217; now running for high office and <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/world/sns-ap-ml-iran-elections,0,5873286.story">wanted</a> by Interpol for his involvement in the bombing. See, that&#8217;s the reform candidate for president in Iran. <a href="http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2005/06/ahmadinejad-from-hostage-taker-to.html"><br />

<p>Welcome to <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=88148974">Extreme</a> <a href="http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2007/11/picture-proof-hostage-taker-ahmadinejad.html">Politics</a> in Islamist Iran. Al Capone and The Joker would fit right in.</p>
<p>But why Argentina? I can understand the whole Great Satan thing, but what did Argentina ever do to Iran? Was the Iranian thugocracy pissed about Argentina no longer supplying WMD components and nuclear supplies, which Argentina <a href="http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/HK15Ak03.html">cut off</a> in 1992, the year the terror attacks began?</p>
<p>Or was it because of Argentine-born Jews? And all Jews everywhere <a href="http://www.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=3117">deserve</a> to die, and in the greatest numbers possible? Maybe it was a twofer. You know. Like Death To America and Death To Israel. They <a href="http://www.strategypage.com/militaryforums/30-98967.aspx">love</a> that stuff, at least enough to <a href="http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/986890/posts">paint</a> it on all their missiles.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s right up there with <a href="http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/1/28/102708.shtml">&#8220;Death To The Jews!</a>&#8221; Or <a href="http://www.svherald.com/articles/2009/03/07/news/politics/doc49b22460f1ff6570154487.txt">partying</a> with their BFF O-Bash.</p>
<p>Then again, do terrorists REALLY need a reason? I think they&#8217;re more than content to watch the world burn. Look what Iran&#8217;s Islamist Nazi thugs do to their own <a href="http://difficultimages.blogspot.com/2006/04/cruel-islam-and-iran-is-worst.html">people</a>! Seventeen-year-old <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/268854">Nazanin Fatehi</a>, sentenced to death for stabbing and killing her and her niece&#8217;s would-be rapist in a park in Tehran. One thirteen-year-old girl stoned to death for being <a href="http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/10-26g-04.asp">raped</a>! Gays hunted down and exterminated. As bad as we, Israel, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and the rest of the world have had it from Iran&#8217;s terror-loving regime and its proxies, we&#8217;re the lucky ones.</p>
<p>Ahmadinejad was <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/269797">right</a> about gays in Iran, you know. Just like Hitler was right when he said there were no Jews in Germany. The discussion&#8217;s pretty much <a href="http://skeptically.org/hhor/id10.html">moot</a>. And Iran has now successfully <a href="http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/2659/iran_exports_anti_gay_pogrom_to_iraq/">exported</a> their own Gay Holocaust <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;as_qdr=m&amp;num=100&amp;ei=vOwISv7PLMqEtwfmnejdCw&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=spell&amp;resnum=0&amp;ct=result&amp;cd=1&amp;q=Iraqi+clerics+crackdown+gays&amp;spell=1">to Iraq</a>, which Bush should have stopped and Obama must.</p>
<p>Thus ends the prequel, and leads us straight to Roxana Saberi and today. Hell, Team Oscar was IN Iran when Clinton demanded Roxana&#8217;s release! You hear a peep out of any of them?</p>
<p>Roxana was BBC and NPR, not FOX! Wait, Mr. Snerdley tells me Roxana DID work for FOX on occasion. Okay, got it. The Hollywood blackout on Roxana all makes sense now. But Roxana is free, and that is all that matters. The rest, lessons learned. And that brings us to a few loose story ends.</p>
<p>What are we and the world now to think of the Iranian thugocracy&#8217;s brilliant facade of justice, showing us how merciful they can really be, and that they are truly nice guys after all if only we will be nice to them? Were Roxana the only story here? Maybe. But she isn&#8217;t. Not by a damn sight.</p>
<p>Iranian-American filmmaker <a href="http://for-esha.blogspot.com/">Esha Momeni</a> still faces her own kangaroo court tribunal for celluloid slanders, for her a women&#8217;s rights documentary. And former FBI agent Robert Levinson is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Levinson">nowhere</a> to be found after two years The Iranian government even <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Levinson">blocked</a> efforts by the Swiss to track him down at our request. Wouldn&#8217;t even let them go to Kish Island to investigate. Hmm. Curious.</p>
<p>Most important of all, Islamist extremist Iran was, is and remains a human rights horrorshow, one of the worst in the world. Even bloggers pay for the <a href="http://www.blogherald.com/2009/03/20/iranian-blogger-dies-in-prison/">wrong words</a> with their lives, like Omid Reza Mir Sayaf, who died in Evin during Roxana&#8217;s unlawful detention there. And they seem just a bit <a href="http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/iran/nuke2.htm">too</a> <a href="http://www.iran-press-service.com/articles_2001/dec_2001/rafsanjani_nuke_threats_141201.htm">antsy</a> to get nukes. That bothers me greatly. It&#8217;s one thing for Israel to have an arsenal. Would you want Hamas or Al Qaeda with a warhead? See, when it comes to nukes, Sanity Matters, okay?</p>
<p>My fear is, the world will look at the merciful end of this obscene miscarriage of justice, and cat-and-mouse toying with Roxana Saberi and us by Iran&#8217;s thugocracy, as the light at the end of a dark tunnel, whereas I see a freight train coming at us at full speed. Yet I have no power over those events. I can only report on them to the best of my abilities with what information I have.</p>
<p>Am I biased against Iran? You bet!</p>
<p>But not Iran&#8217;s freedom-loving people, who are suffering the most of anyone. The freedom-crushing and terror-sponsoring Shiite Islamist thugocracy is the real problem here. Just as it was with Hitler and his thugocracy of terror.</p>
<p>People need not to lose sight of what Iran&#8217;s Islamist thugocracy is really all <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/268520">about</a>. And if you doubt my stern and brutal accusations, go look up the truth yourself. One Google search and you&#8217;ll be <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=Iran+human+rights+abuse">neck-deep</a> in it. Then think of where this story is really going.</p>
<p>Now, on to the Heroes and Villains.</p>
<p>First up, the Good Guys and Roxana&#8217;s true BFF. Freeroxana.net, the North Dakota Legislature with their Free Roxana bill, the CPJ, The BBC, NPR and ABC with their 10,000-plus signature petition and strong words, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, <a href="http://www.iranian.com/main/news">Iranian.com</a> and too many others around the world to mention here. Roxana had, and has, no shortage of friends. I will even include the UK Guardian and Huffington Post, both of whom I&#8217;ve warred with, but which have long been on the Free Roxana Bandwagon with their peerless <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/iran">reporting</a> on Iran and full support of Roxana.</p>
<p>I know, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/">I know</a>. But credit where credit is due.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, there was also no shortage of villains either, the greatest being the Iranian thugocracy itself, which unlawfully detained Roxana from the start, lied about Roxana&#8217;s release to SOS Clinton on March 6th, sent signals to Roxana&#8217;s parents as they left for Iran that Roxana&#8217;s release was being speeded up, only to land and see Roxana sentenced falsely to eight years for espionage, in closed session and without even a lawyer present. Broke everyone&#8217;s hearts.</p>
<p>Hitler had rigged <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266203,00.html">courts</a> like Iran&#8217;s that imprisoned and <a href="http://scenews.blog.com/4921360/">executed</a> the <a href="http://www.stopchildexecutions.com/">innocent</a>, and freed <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266203,00.html">serial killers</a>. How much further behind the curtain do you have to look to know the wizards are evil?</p>
<p>Yet I fully expect the Iranian thugocracy to use this &#8216;peace-seeking&#8217; correction of an abomination of justice as a political and diplomatic club, or proof of their divine benevolence. Most likely both. And far too many will fall to their knees in gratitude over Roxana and agree. They don&#8217;t fool me. Then again, I&#8217;m not a fool when it comes to Iran. I&#8217;ve been watching their Islamist horrorshow for thirty long years. I&#8217;ll go by what history and my eyes and ears tell me, and not some clueless morons.</p>
<p>Speaking of which, Congress, The President, State, and the <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/269319">Invisible Press</a> all pulled major disappearing acts on Roxana, when she should have stayed front and center after SOS Clinton&#8217;s demand for her release. Look at these unbelievable <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/269510">search results</a> from March 20th, two weeks after Iran promised to release Roxana &#8217;soon&#8217;. It&#8217;s like she was bad press the Obamamedia and government wanted swept under the rug.</p>
<p>No bill submitted to Congress in all that time in support of Roxana that I can find, only statements by Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Roxana&#8217;s home state. Too busy cleaning our pockets, I guess. Or calling us racist redneck teabaggers. Roxana who?</p>
<p>This whole sordid production also revealed to me how mile-wide and micron-deep Hollywood&#8217;s support for human rights really is. And I don&#8217;t mean Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey, George Clooney and the dozens of other <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,509034,00.html">real</a> human rights and troop-supporting <a href="http://www.uso.org/whatwedo/entertainment/celebritytouring/moviepremieres/">heroes</a> of Hollywood.</p>
<p>I specifically mean the <a href="http://actdcmetro.wordpress.com/2009/03/01/hollywoods-useful-stooges-in-iran-on-cultural-exchange/">left-wing</a> <a href="http://en.rian.ru/world/20070829/75544326.html">Looney</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH3jgEEDGbo">Tunes</a> Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which fancies itself as human rights champs. Name me one mention of Roxana Saberi from any prominent Academy member to date, even when Team Hollywood was in Tehran. Won&#8217;t find her anywhere in Team Oscar member William Horberg&#8217;s Iran <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jtsimpson/2009/04/01/hollywood-as-willie-horton-plus-team-oscars-iran-blog/">blogging</a>. No press releases. Yawn.</p>
<p>How about filmmaker Esha Momeni? Nope, no Esha. Or any mention of the Iranian regime&#8217;s <a href="http://www.atlanticfreepress.com/news/1/2998-iran-iraq-and-that-gay-hunt-the-left-keeps-ignoring.html">hunting</a>, party-<a href="http://gaycitynews.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=18383191&amp;BRD=2729&amp;PAG=461&amp;dept_id=568864&amp;rfi=8">raiding</a>, <a href="http://www.petertatchell.net/international/sparedexecution.htm">online</a> entrapping, torturing and slaughtering of gays that should have outraged them beyond measure but which they seem to have curiously overlooked, and not a week removed from their four-hour gay rights infomercial called the Oscars. They&#8217;re still silent about it!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not like you really have to <a href="http://www.google.com/#hl=en&amp;q=Iran+executes+gays&amp;btnG=Google+Search&amp;aq=f&amp;oq=Iran+executes+gays&amp;fp=ICVP5FShbzg">look</a> for this stuff. And I know they know. I&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.oscars.org/contact/">told</a> them. Repeatedly.</p>
<p>Wait a minute! Was Team Oscar on some super-secret Mission Impossible Thing for <a href="http://fineartamerica.com/images-medium/barack-obama-superman-byron-furgol.jpg">ObamaMan</a> ? You know. &#8220;Should any member of Team Oscar be caught or killed, the President will disavow all knowledge.&#8221; Are they remaining silent and staying nice so they can infiltrate Iran again? If so, I apologize, guys. My only regret is that you all escaped unharmed. Maybe I should file an <a href="http://www.state.gov/m/a/ips/">FOIA</a> on that one. Why not? Shouldn&#8217;t be a problem. They seem to be just giving away secrets these days.</p>
<p>In summary, &#8216;Roxana: A True Story&#8217; was a riveting, very uncomfortable and all too real life-and-death drama with plenty of ordinary citizen superheroes, Blofeld-like villains, Dr. Smith-like cowards and even a few Judases. Zeroes were Stars, and Stars were Zeroes. Yet this production should never have been staged in the first place. It should have ended after SOS Clinton&#8217;s demand. And Roxana&#8217;s happy ending is only one of far too few in today&#8217;s Iran. Too many play out like &#8216;Schindler&#8217;s List&#8217;.</p>
<p>On that note, how about we all start calling cruel, oppressive and violent nations for what they are, instead of what we wish them to be? It ain&#8217;t helping <a href="http://www.irqr.net/">those</a> who really need help. But a lot of people speaking up for Roxana helped save her. How about &#8216;Artists United Against Insanity&#8217;? <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKCJWjqjQww">Little Stevie&#8217;s</a> still out there!</p>
<p>As to what the future brings, who can say? But Roxana is free now, so today I&#8217;m gonna have that symbolic piece of overdue <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103490676">birthday</a> cake, and set aside my reporting for other endeavors. As to Iran, I will say <a href="http://www.answers.com/topic/caveat-emptor">Caveat Emptor</a> to all. But I will spare you, in parting, one inevitable coming attraction to Thugocracy Studios already <a href="http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/270421">in production</a>. It&#8217;s a <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/june/7/newsid_3014000/3014623.stm">sequel</a>, actually. Or is it the <a href="http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/bstephens/?id=110010619">third</a> in a trilogy?</p>

<p>J.J. Abrams is officially the Lazarus of movie directors as his all-new <em>Star Trek</em> has gone “Boldly Gone Where No <em>Star Trek</em> Movie has Gone Before.” With a cast of relative unknowns, the 42-year-old has resurrected a franchise that had been killed by insular “nerdyness” and timid imagination. The Gene Rodenberry creation didn’t so much bomb as it died slowly over a period of years. First, the 2002 movie <em>Star Trek: Nemesis</em> starring the <em>Next Generation</em> cast disappointed with a meager $43.3M domestic. Then, the final TV series <em>Enterprise</em>, which starred Scott Bakula, was not embraced by core fans or broader audiences and was canceled after four seasons, ending May 13, 2005.</p>

<p>With the ringing endorsement of tough-to-please critics, <em>Star Trek</em> hit warp speed at the box office last night with lightly-promoted preview screenings starting at 7pm. The impeccably-reviewed feature film seized an estimated $7M or so in Thursday night ticket sales. The idea may have been to get some of the hardcore Trekkies and Trekkers out of the way, clearing multiplexes for mainstream movie audiences today, and they have showed up in massive numbers.</p>

5. <em>Star Trek: Nemesis</em> (2002) &#8211; $7.7M</p>
<p>How will the weekend play out? The Thursday night preview screenings will probably make<em> Star Trek</em> a bit less front-loaded. In fact, I’m guessing that, based on word-of-mouth and its family-friendly PG-13 rating, my sources believe that the movie could get a 5% boost on Saturday to a possible $27.3M, followed by an aggressive Mother&#8217;s Day drop of 40% on Sunday. That would mean a 4-day gross of almost $77M or so.</p>

<p>The great news for Paramount and Abrams and Pine and Quinto and the rest of the cast is that <em>Star Trek</em> will almost certainly have the best legs of any of this summer’s major tent-pole movies. Rank-and-file moviegoers are likely to discover <em>Star Trek</em> for the first time in coming weeks or, now that <em>Trek</em> is cool again, it may rekindle interest with core fans who rejected the most recent incarnations.</p>

<p>It will not be a surprise to see <em>Star Trek</em> sail past $200M. After all, 2005’s <em>Batman Begins</em> performed that way. The Christopher Nolan Batman reboot opened on a Wednesday with $15M and had banked $72.9M in 5 days. Based on that movie’s Friday-thru-Sunday of $48.7M, the first Batman movie in 8 years reached its $205M domestic total at a 4.2 multiple (4.2 X $48.7 got Nolan&#8217;s original to $205M). Anticipating a 4.2 multiple for <em>Star Trek</em> is probably overreaching, but a 3.4-3.5 multiple is possible. That would propel Abrams and company to well past $200M.</p>

<p>Competing studio execs  tell me that<em> X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em> (Fox) took a big tumble as expected. The Hugh Jackman X-Men spin-off only mustered $9.15M or so on its second Friday, but it will still likely top $27.95M for the weekend, down about 67%. Meanwhile, <em>Ghosts of Girlfriends Past</em> (Warner Bros) coaxed about $3M to start the frame, and it will likely be helped by Mother&#8217;s Day, grabbing a possible $10M, down a mere 35% from last weekend.</p>

<p><em>Obsessed</em>, the low budget sizzler from Sony Screen Gems, continues to outperform its low expectations with $2M on Friday, which pushes the Beyonce catfight flick past $50M. The thriller should finish the 3-day with about $6.25M and a spectacular $55.89M by Monday.</p>

Abrams&#8217; all-new reboot of Star Trek (Paramount), which debuted last night at 7pm at many of its 3,849 locations, may have grossed as much as $6.5M-$7.5M. Studio honchos are &#8220;locked down tight&#8221; about actual numbers, but that is in the same ballpark as Transformers (Dreamworks/Paramount), which grabbed $8.8M in its previews starting at 8pm on Monday, July 2 during the summer of 2007. (What portion of ticket sales fall into Thursday and what percentage fall into Friday will likely be an open question even after final numbers are in.)</p>

<p>Keep in mind that Paramount never changed its Star Trek marketing to promote the 7pm Thursday start, so the opening night audience was likely heavy on Trekkers or Trekkies (not sure which term is &#8220;politically correct&#8221; anymore). So this was a &#8220;soft&#8221; opening and what amounts to a night of word-of-mouth screenings. Keep in mind that Transformers premiered during the summer when kids are more available while Star Trek has made its premiere during the school year.</p>

If the movie does $20M today, the 4-day should be $63M-$65M. $22M or better should send this spectacularly-reviewed blockbuster past $70M. If the day is $25M or better, the number for the opening 4 days could start with an 8.</p>

Abrams reboot of <em>Star Trek</em> (Paramount) will win the second weekend of the Hollywood Summer Box Office season by at least a couple of light years over Fox’s fast-fading <em>X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em>, but some of the astronomical numbers I’ve seen floating around in the blogosphere are very over-heated. Make no mistake, this movie will open extraordinarily well, but it’s not going to play out as a typical front-loaded blockbuster. Moviegoers need time to shake off the disappointment of the final TV series <em>Enterprise</em> (starring Scott Bakula and canceled after four seasons) and the disastrous 2002 final film <em>Star Trek: Nemesis</em> ($43.3M domestic). It will take time for a new generation of fans to discover the magic of Gene Rodenberry’s vision of the future through Abrams’ magical lens.</p>

<p>Let’s be honest. Prior to what, by all accounts, is Abrams’ full-on Lazarus-style resurrection of Kirk, Spock and The Enterprise, <em>Star Trek</em> was dead. Worse than dead, it has been considered “uncool.” That’s what Paramount is fighting in the marketplace, and realistically, even in its peak as a movie franchise, it wasn’t a powerhouse.</p>

<p>The biggest opening weekend for a <em>Star Trek</em> movie was 1996’s <em>Star Trek: First Contact</em> with $30.7M and the top grossing title ever was <em>Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home</em> (with that ridiculous humpback whale storyline), which surpassed $109M. Consider this. Here are the top five opening days for movies in the <em>Star Trek </em>franchise.</p>

<p>When journeyman actor Robert Pine, best known for playing Sgt. Joe Getraer on the late 70’s TV hit <em>ChiPs</em>, appeared as an Akritirian Ambassador named Liria on the series <em>Star Trek Voyager</em> (the TV series with Kate Mulgrew as Captain), he could have never imagined that his son Chris would someday play Captain Kirk, but the 28-year-old is now in the <em>Trek</em>’s most pivotal role. He was excellent in a little movie called <em>Bottle Shock</em> last year, but aside from that, and roles in <em>The Princess Diaries 2</em> and <em>Smokin’ Aces</em>, he is basically an unknown.</p>

<p>In fact, the new <em>Star Trek</em> is filled with actors who are more-or-less unknown. Simon Pegg, the brilliant UK star of <em>Shaun of the Dead</em> and <em>Hot Fuzz</em> and cast as the colorful Scotty here, is probably the biggest name in the cast along with John Cho from the <em>Harold &amp; Kumar</em> movies, playing Sulu. But these are all talented actors who will wear well as the franchise turns into a steady hit machine for Paramount. Fans of NBC&#8217;s <em>Heroes</em> already know Zachary Quinto who gets to don Spock’s pointy ears and Chekov is being portrayed by one of my favorite young actors, 20-year-old Anton Yelchin, who was heartbreaking in the gritty <em>Alpha Dog</em> and showed a lighter touch in <em>Charlie Bartlett</em>. Trekkers are also likely to take to the sexy Zoe Saldana (<em>Drumline, Guess Who?</em>) who steps into Nichelle Nichols’ shoes as Uhura and will appear in James Cameron’s long-awaited <em>Avatar</em> at the end of the year.</p>

<p>The appropriate movie to look to for box office guidance is 2005’s <em>Batman Begins</em>. Great filmmaker (Christopher Nolan), spectacular reviews, but the franchise was dead and uncool after 1997’s ridiculous <em>Batman &amp; Robin</em>. The reboot 8 years later opened on a Wednesday with $15M and had banked $72.9M in 5 days (the Friday-thru-Sunday was $48.7M). That lays the groundwork for an accurate prediction for <em>Star Trek</em>.</p>

<p>My bet is on a possible $65M for 4 days. With Thursday preview screenings starting at 7pm, <em>Star Trek</em> could snag as much as $8M on Thursday night (the Trekkers will be out in full force). Then Friday could be something in the $20.5M range with a slight uptick of 5% on Saturday to a possible $21.6M followed by a standard 30% Sunday drop to about $15M.</p>

<p>Once audiences realize that <em>Star Trek</em> is light year better than previous movies in the franchise (and last weekend’s <em>Wolverine</em>), the picture will play and play and play. I think that, of all of the major studio releases this summer, <em>Star Trek</em> may have the “longest legs.” If the movie opens within 5% of my number or bigger, the multiple (the number by which you multiply the opening weekend in order to arrive at the final domestic gross) could be 3.4-3.5, which would push J.J. Abrams reinvented Rodenberry opus to something in the $220M-$230M range.</p>

<p>I am anticipating a steep drop of 65%-70% for<em> X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em>, and producer/star Hugh Jackman will be forced to settle for a second weekend of $27M-$30M. That would still be a nifty 10-day gross of $130M or so.</p>

<p>Finally, <em>Next Day Air</em> (Summit), a low budget, R-rated urban comedy starring Donald Faison (<em>Scrubs</em>), Mike Epps (<em>Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins</em>), Wood Harris (<em>The Wire</em>) and Mos Def (<em>Cadillac Records</em>), will open in the shadow of the retooled U.S.S. Enterprise and is unlikely to wrap up the weekend with any more than $6M.</p>
