Apparently, instead of just wallowing in the misery that must have attended getting canned by MSNBC back in January, Olbermann has spent part of his hiatus from the public eye rubbing elbows with “top progressive…voices” like Richard Lewis, Ken Burns, and the always adorable Michael Moore (yes, the same Moore who helped raise $50,000 for the ground zero mosque and who still believes universal healthcare will work in America regardless of its miserable showing in Europe and Canada).

Moreover, Olbermann recently announced that Lewis, Burns, and Moore, will all be part of his new show, set to premier on Al Gore’s Current TV on June 20, 2011.

As it concerns Moore, this announcement is very timely because it comes on the heels of Moore’s incredibly ignorant op-ed scribbling – incredibly ignorant even for him – about our actions against the recently deceased Osama bin Laden. It appears that Moore believes our country’s image would have been better served had we captured Osama and brought him back for trial instead of just killing him on the spot.

Yet Moore’s thoughts are so incongruous that in the same op-ed in which he makes his case for a trial, he also wrote that he’s against the death penalty. By extrapolation, this can only mean that if we had in fact brought Osama back for trial, even upon finding him guilty, the most Moore would have wanted us to do for punishment would have been to sentence him to life in prison.

When MSNBC’s Ed Schultz pointed to the inherent foolishness of Moore’s words, referring to them as just so much “intellectual liberal handwringing,” ex-MSNBC employee Olbermann came to Moore’s defense: “For him to…be accused of ‘intellectual liberal handwringing’ by a supposedly liberal commentator on a supposedly liberal television network is outrageous.”f

I say kudos to Schultz for doing something a lot of liberals can’t do: namely, looking beyond political labels long enough to know that Osama’s death was a great thing for America (whether it made Moore happy or not).

As for Olbermann’s defense of Moore, what else should we expect? The guy is so washed up that his new show is going to be carried on the same exciting channel that brought us Al Gore’s 24/7 climate-disaster programming.

If I were that washed up, I might even hang out with Michael Moore.

I’ve been so hard on Jon Stewart lately that it felt dishonest not to post what is objectively a truly clever and very funny skewering of MSNBC. And I post this well aware that everyone’s going to accuse me of only liking Stewart when he attacks the other side, which happens to be mostly true. In my mind, Stewart is no different from a Lawrence O’Donnell or Chris Matthews and so if he unfairly attacks one of our own, I’m going to fight back. But if he goes after one of his own you can bet that I’m going to sit back and savor every moment.

Feel free to sue me, but be sure to enjoy the video first.

And if Stewart isn’t enough fun for you, Keith Olbermann’s obviously wounded feelings might help to fill that gap:

Over the past two years, Academy Award-winner Richard Dreyfuss has undertaken a campaign for civility in political discourse. To aide in achieving this civility, he launched the Dreyfuss Initiative in 2010, the proximate of goal of which was to promote “a…diverse variety of websites representing disparate political opinions… to foster a discussion related to the future of America.” (His stated goals for a revival of civility even reach into K-12 classrooms, for which he is personally designing a curriculum to ignite students’ interest in Civics once more.)

Oh yes, and I almost forgot to mention that he sees nothing uncivil about the fact that MSNBC’s Ed Schultz wishes that former Vice President Dick Cheney would die.

That’s right: When recently asked about comments Schultz made in March 2009, wherein Schultz called Cheney an “enemy of the country” and prayed that God would soon whisk him away to “the Promised Land,” Dreyfus said the words were “beautifully phrased.” (Moreover, Hollywood’s self-proclaimed crusader for civility is on record saying that when he prepared to play Cheney in the movie “W.,” he did so by searching his own heart to find “villainy in the world.”)

It’s kind of discombobulating isn’t it? First, Dreyfuss bemoans lacks of civility in political discourse so he founds the Dreyfuss Initiative to help foster civility in our discourse again. Secondly, he bemoans the diminished study of Civics, which he views as a basis for civility, thus he forges a curriculum to restore the study of Civics (and therefore promote civility). Finally, he then calls Cheney a villain and says that Schultz’s prayers for Cheney’s death were “beautifully phrased.”

In all these things, Dreyfuss perfectly demonstrates why salt-of-the-earth Americans look at Hollywood as out of touch with the real world. His personal lack of civility has undermined any efforts he might exert to better political discourse and turned his otherwise admirable endeavors into little more than a bad joke.

And for civility’s sake, let me add one more thing: God Bless Dick Cheney.

The more I watch clips like Janeane Garofalo’s appearance on the Olbermann show, the more I’m convinced that its not real. That’s right. Allow me to introduce to the world a new form of “trutherism.” I have discovered a new conspiracy. I think leftist talking heads are faking it.

In the late 1970s the brilliant Andy Kaufman created an alter ego, Tony Clifton. Kaufman demanded that his “friend” Tony get a role on the show Taxi. He then proceeded to cause such a disturbance on set (including hiring hookers to accompany him) that his co-stars walked off the production. Not once did Kaufman admit or acknowledge that he and Clifton were the same person. He never broke character. It was a brilliant, immersive piece of performance art.

Kaufman’s legacy of blending performance art, comedy, and audacious behavior continues today. Witness Jon Stewart, Garofalo, Ed Shultz, Olbermann, Susan Roesgen, Michael Moore, Rosie O’Donnell and countless other performers. How else can you explain such over the top examples of derangement? What better way to distance yourself from the pack by espousing views and analysis that fly in the face of history and common sense? When Olbermann looks at the camera with a straight face and talks about Dick Cheney’s secret assassination squads, you have to admire his ability to not loose composure like Horatio Sanz in the middle of an SNL sketch.

How could anyone consider the philosophies of Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman, witness the awesome display of grassroots demonstration that is the Tea Party movement, and hear the pleas of average citizens to stop government spending and boil it all down to “racism”? You can’t. It’s a joke. An elaborate hoax. It’s funnier than Gallagher smashing a watermelon and more intricate than the Punk’d episode where Ashton Kutcher totally set up Frankie Muniz.

Actors also view never breaking character as a challenge of their thespian skills. A few years back, I had the opportunity to hang out and drink with Sean Penn. It was a blast. He was great.

I was dismayed when I read his New York Times op-ed about the Iraq war and downright disappointed when he took trips to Iraq and Venezuela. He really was “palling around with terrorists.” How, I thought, could such a fun, talented, rational guy do such a thing?

Then, I figured it out. Spicoli isn’t a terrorist appeaser, violator of human rights, and all around puppet for evil; he’s a SPY. What better way for Bush and Cheney to gather sensitive intel than have an inside man? My head filled with visions of Penn pretending to listen to Saddam’s boring tour while he placed tiny GPS targeting devices all over the royal palace. I mean, come on, he’s one of the greatest actors of our generation. He made me believe that he was the gay “mayor” of San Francisco, he could easily convince a Commie blowhard like Hugo Chavez that he was down with closing television stations and killing a few pesky protestors.

Just look at the new character that Jamie Foxx created for himself when he lambasted Miley Cyrus. Was it a coincidence that his remarks happened right before the release of his new film and right as her film topped the box office? I mean really, who pays attention to press kit interviews and behind the scenes clips when we can watch Jamie unveil a new personality who can pack enough insulting and hateful comments into one sentence to ruin Don Imus, Al Campanis and Michael Richards combined.

Making liberal comments like “Rush Limbaugh is a fascist” simply doesn’t generate the headlines that would revitalize a stagnant career. If Keith Olbermann simply reported facts and thought logically about what he was saying, his ratings would be a third of what Fox News gets. Wait. What? His ratings are a third of Fox News. Hmmm. Maybe he should channel Kaufman and bring some hookers to set. Oh, wait, Bill Maher already patented that routine.

Maybe it is just wishful thinking that some of the most charismatic personalities in entertainment are just trying to “Punk” the nation with outlandish comments. Maybe Janeane Garofalo really does think that Libertarian thought is a code word for racism. Maybe Rosie O’Donnell really doesn’t think that heat can melt steel. Maybe Danny Glover really likes Fidel Castro and wasn’t helping Dick Cheney make a 3-D digital map of Cuban military bases.

But isn’t it more fun, and a bit reassuring, to think that these people are uber talented and dedicated to their craft instead of intellectually lazy?

As a talk radio pro who defends and cherishes free speech, it’s time for me to weigh in on why Air America sucks. It’s not that I want them to fail – they already have once. As a free speech advocate, I cheer for their success – unlike what many liberals hope for conservative talk which I helped establish in America. But, since its inception, Air America has been a failure. After its first financial disaster, it is attempting to make a comeback and has new and credible leadership in industry veterans Bennett Zier and Bill Hess. But, it’s a long climb out of a deep hole.

Air America’s newest ace is none other than former TV huckster Montel Williams. He follows Jerry Springer who followed none other than…..Al Franken. Now, there is some name value in all three, but the first two failed in radio. Franken was an absolute disaster. As I wrote in my upcoming book “Censorship: The Threat to Silence Talk Radio,” Franken didn’t know he had to have something between the ears to do a three-hour radio talk show each day. And, that’s what so many of these non-radio personalities don’t get. Doing a three-hour radio talk show takes hours of prep time. Most hosts spend about three hours of prep time for each hour of on-air time. These guys just walked into the studio and thought it would happen automatically. Listeners would flock to them….they were superstars…NOT! There are no teleprompters in radio!

I once watched Franken accept an award in New York before a gathering of radio executives a few years ago and I almost puked. We were ready for a 5-10 minute acceptance speech, but what we got was a 30-40 minute rant against Bush. Nothing but whining. And this was at a cocktail party gathering. We all walked out.

Those liberals who have made it in talk radio don’t have an association with Air America. Some stations have a liberal lean and work in markets like San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz and Thom Hartmann have gained success independent of Air America. But ratings nationwide are next to nothing for Air America stations.

There are many reasons why Air America has so far failed to gain traction with listeners. One is because most of the media is already liberal and it’s questionable whether there’s more room for more liberalism in the media today. Look at NPR as one example: it’s ratings are at an all-time high, so why many liberals are calling for a return of “fairness” regulations is beyond any normal logic. But we’re not talking about logical people.

When Air America first began, it was comprised of a bunch of non-professional whiners. They put ideology ahead of entertainment value. None were a match for Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Mark Levin, Lars Larson, and any number of radio professionals who were entertaining as well as informative. Air America was not entertaining–it was “acid reflux” in our speakers. They had nothing positive to say about anything. Meantime, conservative talkers have always been more positive, happy, and genuine and this resonates with America. It’s at the core value of what conservatives believe. Traditionally, we are an optimistic group of people and believe in the goodness of the individual. Air America sounded the complete opposite and so American ears turned away.

Air America also fails to resonate in the heartland. Most decent people still believe in an old fashioned handshake as their bond. There was no handshake coming from Air America. There was from Rush and always will be. Air America is also having trouble generating revenue because entrepreneurs and hard-working business people who tend to buy radio advertising believe in spending their money conservatively – and with conservatives. They support their core values with their core dollars. Air America doesn’t have as many sources of revenue due to socioeconomic values in America. As an example, conservative radio in Portland, Oregon does four times as much revenue as the liberal station, according to my long time sales sources in the market. The reason is as mentioned above.

When the Fairness Doctrine was lifted in 1987, conservatives could come out and voice an opinion on the radio without fear of government retribution. There was so much pent up demand that it took off like wildfire. There just isn’t that same pent up demand for liberal talk because it is everywhere to begin with. It’s the law of supply and demand. And, of course liberals don’t understand that.

So, back to Montel Williams. Good luck.
