<p>This is good news for Netflix, which<strong> </strong>needed some, and bad news for cable television and outlets like HBO. Streaming is the future and <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/26/us-netflix-idUSTRE78P0IW20110926?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=entertainmentNews&amp;rpc=22&amp;sp=true">Dreamworks knows it</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Netflix Inc has won a <a title="Full coverage of deal" href="http://www.reuters.com/finance/deals">deal</a> to pipe Dreamworks Animation movies starting in 2013, the first time a major Hollywood studio has chosen Internet streaming over traditional pay TV, The New York Times reported on Sunday.</p>
<p>Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told the newspaper the deal, worth $30 million per picture to Dreamworks over a number of years, was &#8220;game-changing&#8221; and represented a bet that viewers would soon no longer make distinctions between content streamed on the Internet or through cable.</p>
<p>The Netflix deal means Dreamworks &#8212; the studio behind family friendly fare from &#8220;Shrek&#8221; to &#8220;Kung Fu Panda&#8221; &#8212; is eschewing premium pay-TV operator HBO in favor of online streaming, the Times reported. HBO is a unit of Time Warner Inc. &#8220;We are really starting to see a long-term road map of where the industry is headed,&#8221; Katzenberg was cited as saying to the newspaper in an interview.</p></blockquote>
<p><span id="more-518264"></span></p>
<blockquote><p>The content agreement comes days after Netflix, which has seen its share price decline sharply after a series of missteps, sealed an agreement to broadcast TV shows from Discovery Communications Inc.</p>
<p>Netflix needs to add more content to its streaming service to keep drawing in new customers and fend off competition from the likes of Amazon.com, Google Inc and Apple Inc.</p></blockquote>
<p>Other streaming providers are going to jump in the race and the losers will be anyone who still believes in appointment television.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Barack Obama’s approval rating is presently a <a href="http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2012/election_2012_presidential_election/election_2012_barack_obama_42_ron_paul_41">rousing 42%.</a> That means the largest portion of the sane American public would love to see the first family pack up their Samsonites® and head back to the <a href="http://www.theroot.com/buzz/oprah-winfrey-way-awaits-chicago-approval-and-more">Winfrey City</a>, famous for deep-dish pizza, Mayor Rahm, and the type of thuggish politics the head of the house is obviously comfortable with.</p>
<p>However, President Barack Obama’s latest fundraising report cites an “A-list of Hollywood stars, with donations from some of the top celebrities in the entertainment industry.” Apparently, left-coast liberals want to see to it that the best script reader since Martin Sheen has another shot at practicing lines on set while acting the part of President.</p>

<p>It’s not surprising that Hollywood is smitten with the “Yes We Can” man’s refusal to admit he can’t.  Those in the acting profession are impressed by amateurs like Barry Soetoro (stage name Barack Obama), who has proven to have a professional-level ability to make believe he’s something he is not. Heck, for a season, even Paul Giamatti was convinced he was <a href="http://www.hbo.com/john-adams/index.html">John Adams</a>.</p>
<p>What could be better for Hollywood than a President who swims around in a policy cesspool similar to the one they refuse to empty in Tinsel Town, overflowing with the squalid water of loose morals, abortion rights, angry feminists, racial indignation, class warfare, and overall elitist hypocrisy?<span id="more-494984"></span></p>
<p>By and large, actors, comedians and entertainers pride themselves on being pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, <a href="http://www.freemumia.com/">pro-free Mumia</a>, pro-promiscuity, and pro-anything non-traditional. Hollywood is full of left-wingers whose “Hope [is to] Change” America into a nation where the likes of Bill Maher and Jane Fonda are symbols of <a href="http://www.mediaite.com/tv/bill-maher-panel-hits-new-low-with-talk-of-hard-fking-michele-bachmann-and-rick-santorum/">empathy</a> and truth.</p>
<p>The fact that <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0711/59184.html#ixzz1SNpchA1w">big name stars</a> contribute to Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection bid proves once again that ideological liberals lack intelligence and common sense.  Little do they know that if Obama gets another four years, it’s certain he’ll drive a stake through the heart of the nation that has bestowed fame and fortune on ignorant people who like to play pretend.</p>
<p>It doesn’t take <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/">Will Hunting</a> to figure out that people who can’t afford gas and groceries aren’t likely to drop $10 on a movie ticket to watch Julia Roberts fake-giggling while riding on the back of a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS155D2HlwY">moped</a> driven by a middle-aged Tom Hanks in a leather jacket.</p>
<p>Yet, despite the inevitable looming catastrophe if Obama is reelected, according to the latest Federal Election Commission report the list of Who’s Who of Obama aficionados includes usual suspects such as Darfur defender George Clooney, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Gump, and cancer survivor <a href="http://www.webmd.com/cancer/news/20110111/michael-douglas-throat-cancer-survivor">Michael Douglas</a> – a man who would have already succumbed to throat cancer had Obamacare already kicked in.</p>
<p>Campaign contributors also include <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W74jGQ-CDTE">Schindler’s List</a></em> director Steven Spielberg and wife Kate Capshaw. The Spielbergs, despite their supposed brilliance, fail to realize they’re supporting a president whose feelings for Israel are at best <a href="http://www.observer.com/2011/opinion/barack-obama-no-friend-israel">questionable</a> and whose lack of action could result in the need for another list if an unrestrained Iran eventually has its way.</p>
<p>Another contradictory campaign contributor is newly discovered country singer and proud part-time Londoner, the multifaceted Mrs. Chris &#8220;Coldplay&#8221; Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow.  Gwyneth likes living in England better than the US, which may be why she decided to punish the colonies by contributing to Obama’s “We Bent the Air Hose in 2008 &#8211; Let’s Pull the Plug in 2012” campaign.</p>
<p>Also in the mix is political scene newcomer Jennifer Garner, wife to one of JLo’s many former fiancés, Ben Affleck. When not speaking before Congress on behalf of <a href="http://www.popsugar.com/Pictures-Jennifer-Garner-Speaking-Out-Senate-Behalf-Save-Children-12118308">Save the Children</a>, Garner supports the reelection of a radically pro-choice threat to the lives of millions of unborn children who, thanks to Barack Obama, truly need saving.</p>
<p>Other Obama star contributors include: <em>Monk</em> star Tony Shalhoub, <em>Glee’s </em>Jane Lynch, <em>24’s </em>president Dennis Haysbert (a man who knows firsthand how to pretend to be a president), and sci-fi star Scott Bakula.  The eclectic group joins cantankerous political wannabe (who should also be in the sci-fi category), <em>30 Rock</em> actor/über-liberal aspiring NYC mayor Alec Baldwin, who prides himself on being diversified in every area except liberalism.</p>
<p>The July quarterly report for the President’s reelection campaign touts $47 million in donations, while the Democratic National Committee raised $38 million through Obama’s joint committee. According to Barack Obama’s campaign, about 40% of the President’s record-breaking take came from “big-money bundlers” and <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0711/59184.html#ixzz1SOHZNsoC">top Hollywood</a> heavy hitters like Rahm’s sibling Ari Emanuel and Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.</p>
<p>Obama continues to practice governing the nation with the finesse of a jackhammer operator doing a kidney transplant. Yet, never once have Fruit of the Loom <a href="http://www.shootonline.com/go/thumbnails/A_297_143de57a249256.jpg">grape man</a> Wayne Wilderson or <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.buddytv.com/articles/desperate-housewives/images/brenda-strong-5.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http://www.buddytv.com/articles/desperate-housewives/profile/brenda-strong.aspx&amp;h=400&amp;w=319&amp;sz=70&amp;tbnid=70XJsC8zCXYBsM:&amp;tbnh=94&amp;tbnw=75&amp;prev=/search%3Fq%3DBrenda%2BStrong%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&amp;zoom=1&amp;q=Brenda+Strong&amp;usg=__eMviX5GphuRXUlznunMkC8uXKAI=&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=FjIjTu6WAcXa0QHM6cy8Aw&amp;ved=0CD0Q9QEwAw&amp;dur=215">Brenda Strong</a> of “Desperate Housewives,” colleague of esteemed “<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwaV7r5gcAY">brainstorming</a>” border security adviser Eva Longoria, questioned the craven cynicism of demonizing the rich while stuffing Hollywood capital into his campaign coffers.</p>
<p>Seems that even after chastising Americans for failing to “share the wealth,” a selectively philanthropic Barack Obama is more than willing to accept the “<a href="http://www.commentarymagazine.com/2011/07/12/obama-unneeded-income-belongs-to-the-government/#ixzz1S0IKbqtM">additional income</a>” of well-to-do Hollywood supporters, if doing so finances his glitzy billion-dollar bid for reelection that should be coined: Take two.</p>
<p>So once again, America is witnessing the unbridled ignorance of affluent individuals who choose to support a President who decries prosperity but has little trouble siphoning off the wealth of a community too clueless to understand who they’re really supporting and too committed to liberal ideology to really care.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Recap: Radical funder George Soros’s $1 million gift to Media Matters, a left-wing character assassination machine, underwrites its campaign to stigmatize conservative ideas. For weeks Eric Boehlert of Media Matters attacked Glenn Beck because a disturbed viewer plotted to shoot up the offices of the left-wing Tides Foundation. The shooter, Byron Williams, failed, but in December when a fan of Media Matters, the late Florida school board shooter Clay Duke, wreaked havoc, Boehlert and Media Matters remained silent.</em></p>
<p>Soros is also bankrolling a documentary that celebrates left-wing terrorists who plotted to napalm Republicans at the 2008 GOP convention in Minnesota. Even worse, you too are bankrolling the film through your taxes.</p>

<p>A trailer for the left-wing film <em>Better This World</em> suggests that it depicts David Guy McKay and Bradley Neil Crowder as idealistic activists who, according to the official blurb, “set out to prove the strength of their political convictions to themselves and their mentor.” In fact McKay and Crowder are convicted domestic terrorists who manufactured instruments of death calculated to inflict maximum pain and bodily harm on people whose political views they disagreed with.</p>
<p>You can be sure that if it was right-wing terrorists who were plotting to attack the Democratic National Convention, whoever foiled the conspiracy would be immortalized in film, literature and song as a savior of democracy.</p>
<p>“If you flip the equation around and it had been a group of conservatives threatening to use force to prevent those on the Left from meeting, everyone would expect the government to infiltrate them and they would also expect the FBI to stop them and charge them with crimes,” said Brandon Darby, who helped the FBI thwart the planned attack. <p>The movie, which is expected to be released this year, attacks Darby, a true American hero who undermined the conspiracy by alerting the FBI. Filmmakers Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega twist the facts to argue that Darby, a former revolutionary activist, manipulated McKay and Crowder into becoming would-be mass murderers.</p>
<p>It’s an easily disproved lie. During sentencing, U.S. District Judge Michael Davis went out of his way to make a specific legal finding that McKay obstructed justice by falsely accusing Darby of inducing him to manufacture the incendiary devices.</p>
<p>McKay and Crowder had made homemade riot shields and were ready to use them in St. Paul to help demonstrators block streets near the Xcel Energy Center. The goal was to shut down the democratic process by preventing GOP delegates from participating in the convention. The shields were discovered and confiscated.</p>
<p>During a search of a residence, police found gas masks, slingshots, helmets, knee pads and eight Molotov cocktails consisting of bottles filled with gasoline with attached wicks made from tampons. “They mixed gasoline with oil so it would stick to clothing and skin and burn longer,” Darby said.</p>

<p>Thanks to Darby’s cooperation with the FBI, the two aspiring bomb throwers are now languishing in prison. McKay entered a “guilty” plea and was sentenced in May 2009 to 48 months in prison plus three years of supervised release for possession of an unregistered “firearm,” illegal manufacture of a firearm and possession of a firearm with no serial number. A week before, Crowder cut a deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to 24 months in prison for possession of an unregistered firearm. McKay received the stiffer sentence in part because he fabricated the tall tale about Darby’s involvement in the plot.</p>
<p>Of course, it should surprise no one that Hollywood loves this kind of story with its anti-American overtones. HBO gave a grant to the filmmakers to produce their pro-terrorist propaganda. So did the Soros-funded Sundance Institute. After Soros’s foundation, the Open Society Institute (OSI), gave Sundance’s Documentary Film Program $4.6 million in 2002, it gave the institute another $5 million in 2009.</p>
<p>Taxpayers also underwrite Sundance’s adventures in social justice indoctrination. According to nonprofit tax returns (known as IRS Form 990s), the Sundance Institute has taken in $11,240,081 in government grants since 1997. It is unclear which governments made the grants because the 990 forms lump all the grant-making governments together.</p>
<p>The federal government has given $1,350,000 to the institute since 2000, according to USAspending.gov. All but $5,000 of the money was from the National Endowment for the Arts. (The $5,000 grant was from the State Department.) It’s not clear if the $1,350,000 is part of the $11 million-plus figure for all government grants.</p>
<p>Upon receiving the most recent OSI grant, Sundance founder Robert Redford obediently genuflected before Soros. “Sundance Institute has supported documentary storytellers since its beginning,” said Redford. “The recognition of that history by George Soros and the Open Society Institute, and the continuation of our relationship over time, speaks to our shared belief that culture—in this case documentary film—is having a profound impact in shaping progressive change.”</p>
<p>Soros himself has acknowledged he is interested in the movies because “[d]ocumentary films raise awareness and inspire action.” He hails cinema for its power to manipulate audiences. OSI has been underwriting “social justice” documentaries since 1996. In 2001 Soros let Redford’s Sundance Institute take over management of his Soros Documentary Fund, which has since rechristened the Soros/Sundance Documentary Fund. (See <em>Foundation Watch</em>, March 2008).</p>
<p>In 2005 Soros acquired 2.6 million shares of the huge diversified media company Time Warner. In 2006 his companies, Soros Strategic Partners and Dune Capital Management, paid $900 million to buy the DreamWorks SKG film library from Viacom, a move that gave Soros the DVD and rebroadcasting rights to films such as Saving Private Ryan (1998), Gladiator (2000), and American Beauty (1999). As James Hirsen noted, the transaction gives Soros “some highly desirable film rights at a time when the marketing and distribution model is changing to video on demand, video iPods and other forms of digital distribution.” But more importantly, it gives Soros “a presence in Hollywood where likeminded libs are ready, willing and able to collaborate in cinematic social engineering.”</p>
<p>Soros is also venturing into media overseas. In 2008 Soros Fund Management plunked down $100 million for 3% of India’s Reliance Entertainment, a $3 billion conglomerate that aims to provide Internet-based TV programs in India. Reliance also churns out movies and owns movie houses, radio stations and social networking websites in the country with one of the fastest growing economies in the world. When in the 1980s Soros set up offices in Eastern Europe for OSI, he helped to finance publishers, independent TV and radio outlets, and political parties.</p>
<p>As writer Rondi Adamson observed, “most of the documentaries that receive Sundance funding are highly critical of some aspect of American life, capitalism or Western culture. The projects generally share Soros’s worldview that America is a troubling if not sinister influence in the world, that the War on Terror is a fraud and terrorists are misunderstood freedom fighters, and that markets are fundamentally unjust.”</p>
<p>The 2009 Sundance Film Festival screened the documentary Disturbing the Universe. The recently deceased Communist historian Howard Zinn described the movie about radical anti-American lawyer William Kunstler as “a wonderful, inspiring film.”</p>
<p><strong>Putting America in its Place</strong></p>
<p>Undermining America and promoting radicalism is what Soros is all about.</p>
<p>Soros seems to want Communist China to become a superpower, throwing its weight around on the world stage. Weeks before President Obama’s visit to China a year ago the Financial Times asked Soros, “What sort of a financial deal should Obama be seeking to strike when he travels to China next month?” He replied:</p>
<p>I think this would be time because you really need to bring China into the creation of a new world order, a financial world order. They are kind of reluctant members of the IMF. They play along, but they don’t make much of a contribution because it’s not their institution. Their share is not commensurate, their voting rights are not commensurate to their weight, so I think you need a new world order that China has to be part of the process of creating it and they have to buy in. [emphasis added]</p>
<p>In November 2010 Soros praised China effusively. “Today China has not only a more vigorous economy, but actually a better functioning government than the United States,” he said.</p>
<p>It’s all in a day’s work for George Soros. And now he’s trying to control the media in America.</p>

<p><span>LOS  ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) &#8211; When President Obama took to the stage at  a Beverly Hilton ballroom on May 27, 2009, to raise money for the  Democratic National Committee, it was a victory lap of sorts for the 250  studio executives, directors and stars who had paid $15,200 apiece to  dine on kabachi ravioli as they listened to their newly elected leader.</span></p>
<p>&#8220;If it weren&#8217;t for you, we  would not be in the White House,&#8221; the president told DreamWorks  Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg, going on to recognize the deep  pockets of other showbiz contributors who had put millions into his  campaign coffers.</p>
<p>Tonight, a little  more than a year later, Obama arrives in Hollywood again to meet and  greet industry heavy hitters. This time, the feelings of many in the  crowd are more complicated. Obama has faced criticism from the left  about unfulfilled campaign promises ranging from the closure of Gitmo to  the repeal of Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell.<span id="more-385153"></span></p>
<p>This  evening&#8217;s fundraiser featuring Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi takes  place at the Hancock Park home of &#8220;ER&#8221; and &#8220;The West Wing&#8221; executive  producer John Wells and benefits the Democratic Congressional Campaign  Committee. The usual gang of Hollywood A-listers will be in attendance:  the host committee includes J.J. Abrams and wife Katie McGrath, Alan and  Cindy Horn, Barbra Streisand, the Katzenbergs, and Kate Capshaw and  Steven Spielberg.</p>
<p>With rising  &#8220;wrong track&#8221; poll numbers and mounting criticism by donors and  supporters over the administration&#8217;s Afghanistan policy, compromises in  the health-care bill and lackluster Wall Street reform, it&#8217;s painfully  obvious that many Hollywood natives are getting restless.</p>
<p>Obama has not cozied up to the industry and,  indeed, has told insiders he feels uncomfortable schmoozing with show  business bigwigs &#8212; a big departure from Bill Clinton.</p>

<p>In addition, dragons are a formidable, if not the ultimate, opponent. They are intelligent creatures that can sometimes talk—see “The Hobbit”—and have armor for skin and a flame-thrower for a mouth. No one wants to fight a dragon unless they are incredibly brave or stupid, or both.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-325394 aligncenter" title="alg_movie_dragon" src="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/files/2010/03/alg_movie_dragon.jpg" alt="alg_movie_dragon" width="413" height="310" /></p>
<p>Enter <a href="http://www.dreamworksstudios.com/">Dreamworks</a>’ Vikings of Berk who star in what is sure to be an instant classic, “<a href="http://www.howtotrainyourdragon.com/">How to Train Your Dragon</a>.” This film has a fighting spirit, a huge heart and comedy that transcends age and gender.</p>
<p>Inspired by British author <a href="http://www.hachettebookgroup.com/kids_authors_Cressida-Cowell-(1010821).htm">Cressida Cowell</a>’s book by the same title, but really more like a prequel, “How to Train Your Dragon” chronicles the life of young Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0059431/">Jay Baruchel</a>), a Viking boy with a lot of brains, but lacking brawn, who is determined to slay a dragon and gain the respect of his father, Viking chief Stoick the Vast (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0124930/">Gerard Butler</a>). But his ambitions change when an encounter with a dragon leads to a relationship that defies everything the Vikings know about dragons, and, through the course of an adventure packed with fast flight, epic battles and a little bit of love, changes village life forever. <span id="more-325206"></span></p>
<p>It is everything that a 3D high-flying adventure should be, and it beats the crap out of “Avatar.”</p>
<p>First off, the film’s script is basically perfect (congrats to writer-director duo <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0213450/">Dean DeBlois</a> and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0761498/">Chris Sanders</a>), virtually devoid of needless dialogue or stupid bathroom jokes that tend to pilfer cartoons these days. It is an intelligent, fun film, filled with unique characters set in a captivating situation.</p>
<p>The vocal cast is excellent, from Hiccup’s slight sarcasm and ease, Butler’s perfect Viking voice and a hilarious <a href="http://www.cbs.com/late_night/late_late_show/">Craig Ferguson</a> as blacksmith and trainer Gobber, to the star-studded cast of supporting characters. While the supporting cast voiced cliché characters, they made them unique in surprising and rewarding ways—especially <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2395586/">Christopher Mintz-Plasse</a> as Fishlegs, a chubby youth with a high voice who has given each dragon type—and there are a lot—a ranking based on speed, size and ability. He’s the Viking version of a World of Warcraft gamer.</p>
<p>Astrid (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1065229/">America Ferrera</a>), Hiccup’s love interest, is a feisty, adorable addition to Cowell’s cast of Viking characters. Complete with a Hot Topic interpretation of a plaid skirt, this young Viking is the animated, Viking version of Hermione from the Potter series. She’s the Viking student-athlete, with a hidden feminine side that makes her real. On her first dragon ride, Astrid experiences fear, anger and awe on a high-flying ride that blows Aladdin’s magic carpet out of the air. The scene is a tribute to the film’s creators on every level, who all shine through its simple, touching beauty.</p>
<p>At its core, the film is an action-adventure, and warring Vikings and dragons are the focus. As such, fight scenes feature wheeling acrobatics and lots of physical humor, and the final battle between joint Viking and dragon forces against a truly terrible beast is a visual stunner.</p>
<p>Animated films have heart, and “How to Train Your Dragon” has a big one. Hiccup’s binding friendship with his dragon was beautifully illustrated, reminiscent of all those sappy dog movies from childhood, but much more fun since this pet has personality and wings. In addition, the changing relationship between Hiccup and Stoick, and the blossoming one between Hiccup and Astrid, cement the film’s lessons in applicable reality. </p>
<p>As does its final battle. While dragons are by the end portrayed essentially as big, misunderstood puppies, there is a villain that must be defeated. In a culture of moral relativity, where no one is good or bad, kids need to see that battles between good and evil exist, and it’s up to each and every one of us to fight them. On that Dreamworks delivers.</p>
<p>One interesting choice that somehow worked for the film is that the adult characters had Scottish accents while the kids all had American accents. </p>
<p>To sum it up, see this movie this year. It’s the best that’s come out so far, and it’s a refreshing, exciting alternative to “Avatar” and “Green Zone” that everyone will enjoy.</p>

NASCAR has an estimated 75 million fans, and it is second only to the National Football League in terms of television ratings, so where are all the good racing movies?</p>

<p>Universal seems to have answered that question by getting its successful street racing franchise back into the fast lane this weekend with <em>Fast &amp; Furious</em>. The movie, which reunites Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez for the first time since 2001’s original surprise blockbuster, has exploded to a high octane $30.11M or so on Friday and that could mean a $70M opening weekend. That would make it the all-time #1 opening for a car racing movie.</p>

<p>The Fast franchise has an odd history. 2001’s <em>The Fast &amp; The Furious</em> scored a blistering $40M opening weekend and reached $144.5M domestic and over $200M worldwide. Then the enigmatic Diesel decided that he didn’t like the script for the proposed sequel. <em>Boyz n the Hood</em>’s John Singleton took the reigns from Rob Cohen and Walker returned for <em>2 Fast 2 Furious</em>, which still scorted an impressive $127M in the US sans Diesel. Then in 2006, Universal rebooted without Diesel or Walker with <em>The Fast &amp; The Furious: Tokyo Drift</em>, and the fan base eroded considerably as the poorly-received movie generated only $62.5M after a sluggish $23.9M 3-day start.</p>

<p>Now, the original cast returns with <em>Tokyo Drift</em> director Justin Lin at the helm, and those Under 25 Males are showing up (dragging their girlfriends no doubt), and the reaction across the social networking platform Twitter is very telling. The first thing I noticed. Lots of sellouts and long lines.</p>

<p>For Vin Diesel, this weekend&#8217;s opening is an all-time best, and you&#8217;ve got to wonder who gives him career advice. He walked away from the both <em>2 Fast 2 Furious</em> and the sequel to the highly lucrative <em>XXX</em> (<em>XXX:State of the Union</em> was ultimately made with Ice Cube as the lead grossing just $26.8M domestic, but it would have certainly performed much better as a Diesel project).</p>

<p><em>Monsters Vs. Aliens</em> (Dreamworks/Paramount) continues to be a box office juggernaut as it begins its second weekend. The animated send-up of B-movie sci-fi from the 1950&#8217;s continues to be fueled by its 2,075 or so standard Digital 3-D engagements and the added 143 Digital IMAX runs scoring an exceedingly strong $8.9M on Friday, which will likely translate to an estimated $35.6M for the frame and a 10-day cume of almost $108M. That will represent an approximate weekend drop of just 40%, which is impressive given that the opening 3-day was $59.3M.</p>

<p>The Lionsgate genre pic <em>The Haunting in Connecticut</em> sold another $3.67M in tickets on its second Friday, and it should reach about $10.65M by Monday for a new cume of $38.47M. That would mean a drop of only 54%, very good for a horror flick.</p>

<p>Meanwhile <em>Knowing</em> (Summit) and <em>I Love You, Man</em> (Dreamworks/Paramount) will both spend another week in the top five. The Alex Proyas-directed Nicolas Cage vehicle managed $2.67M to start the 3-day, and <em>Knowing</em> may reach $8.69M by Monday. With a new cume of $58.76M, the gang at Summit has a shot to push this one just past $70M in the US. John Hamburg&#8217;s Apatow-style comedy with the inspired pairing of Paul Rudd and Jason Segal is also holding strong with an estimated $2.73M in tickets sold on Friday and a weekend target of $8.69M. <em>I Love You, Man</em> could reach $65M domestic before it wraps its theatrical engagements.</p>

<p>The news is not good for the well-reviewed Miramax release <em>Adventureland</em>. Despite a score of <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/adventureland/" target="_blank">89% Fresh</a> on Rotten Tomatoes, Greg Mottola&#8217;s much-anticipated follow-up to Superbad has stumbled out of the gates with just $2.17M from 1,862 playdates. The weekend gross will likely be in the $6.05M range for a Per Theatre Average of just $3,249.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Universal’s <em>Fast &amp; Furious</em> will be “burning rubber” this weekend at America’s multiplexes as the original street-racing cast reunites after some sub-par chapters of the franchise.</p>

The original <em>The Fast &amp; The Furious</em> hit theatres in 2001 under the direction of Rob Cohen who had shown a knack for action with <em>Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story</em> ($35M US cume) and Sly Stallone’s <em>Daylight</em> ($33M US cume) and a savvy feel for bigger-than-life characters in his Golden Globe winning biopic <em>The Rat Pack</em> (which, if you’ve never seen you should put in your Netflix cue and prepare to be amazed by Don Cheadle’s turn as Sammy Davis, Jr.). In tow, he had a 34-year-old Vin Diesel in only his second starring role following the surprise low budget hit <em>Pitch Black</em> ($39M cume) and 28-year-old Paul Walker, who had just starred in Cohen’s forgettable <em>The Skulls</em>. Also in the cast was Jordana Brewster (<em>As the World Turns</em>) and a pre-<em>Lost </em>Michelle Rodriguez, whose most notable credit was a gritty little indie called <em>Girlfight</em>.</p>

<p>The result was box office jet fuel. Seemingly out of nowhere, <em>The Fast &amp; The Furious</em> scored a scalding $40M opening weekend and reached $144.5M domestic and over $200M worldwide. But Diesel, whose signature line in the original movie is “I live my life one quarter of a mile at a time,” didn’t like the script for the sequel (or they wouldn’t pay his asking price depending on who you ask). That led to the 2003 sequel <em>2 Fast 2 Furious</em> directed by Academy Award nominee John Singleton (<em>Boyz n the Hood</em>) starring Walker along with rapper Tyrese Gibson and Eva Mendes. Despite Diesel’s conspicuous absence, <em>2 Fast</em> still delivered $127M in the US.<span id="more-96130"></span></p>

No Diesel. No Walker. The movie featured Zachery Ty Bryan from TV’s<em> Home Improvement</em> and the very solid Lucas Black, who had just played quarterback Mike Winchell in the film version of <em>Friday Night Lights</em> and as a kid co-starred with Billy Bob Thornton in<em> Sling Blade</em>. The third movie in the franchise “drifted” toward irrelevancy with a very soft $23.9M opening and only $62.5M domestic.</p>
<p>Now, as The Blues Brothers once famously said, “We’re getting the band back together!” Diesel. Walker. The still beautiful Brewster. And, the edgy Rodriguez, who, ironically, has one of the worst driving records in history (a hit-and-run, 2 DUIs and at least 3 speeding tickets including one for 90mph in a 35mph zone). This time, they are under the direction of <em>Tokyo Drift</em> director Justin Lin, and the reviews are less than sparkling (<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/fast_and_furious/" target="_blank">18% Fresh</a> on Rotten Tomatoes), but there are some credible positive notices, including Kirk Honeycutt from the Hollywood Reporter who says, “All four films feature terrific stunts. But <em>Fast &amp; Furious</em> is the first film since the original to be smart about how far to stretch logic without sacrificing the desired macho swagger and revved-up emotions.”</p>

<p>The average street racing fan is unlikely to be a Hollywood Reporter reader, and the PG-13 rating will allow for a flood of teen boys, who have grown up playing video games like <em>Grand Theft Auto</em>, to pour into theatres for some high octane fun. The tracking, especially Males Under 25, looks very strong, and my prediction is for $48M, but I won’t be surprised to see it speed past $50M.</p>

<p><em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em> (Dreamworks/Paramount) has been performing very well during the week, especially in those communities where kids are off for spring break. I’ll be surprised if <em>MVA</em> dips much more than 40% from its $59.3M opening frame. I’m predicting a $35.4M second weekend, which would mean a spectacular 10-day cume of about $106.7M.</p>
<p>With only two new, wide releases, <em>The Haunting in Connecticut</em> (Lionsgate) should hold up better-than-the-average horror movie. I am anticipating about $11.7M, which would mark only a 49% drop. With a new cume of about $40M by Monday, this low budget special will have made back its budget twice over before its done (not to mention ancillary rights).</p>

<p>The latest from Nicolas Cage and directed by Alex Proyas (<em>Dark City, I Robot</em>), is nearing profitability as well. <em>Knowing</em> (Summit), with a reported budget of $50M, is likely to bank another $8.7M over the weekend for a new cume of almost $59M. It is opening decently in foreign markets including $5M+ in Russia.</p>

<p>Director Greg Mottola’s long-awaited follow-up to mega-hit <em>Superbad</em> ($121M US) is the much lower profile <em>Adventureland</em> from Miramax. The reviews are through the roof with an <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/adventureland/" target="_blank">85% Fresh</a> rating from Rotten Tomatoes, and especially noteworthy is Kenneth Turan of the LA Times who writes, “With a cast that believed in one another and a writer-director who believed he didn&#8217;t have to follow up<em> Superbad</em> with <em>SuperEvenBadder</em>, <em>Adventureland</em> is the kind of adventure we could all use more of.”</p>
<p>This is the kind of movie that could surprise because of positive buzz, but with only 1,862 screens, it’s hard to generate an eye-popping number. I’m penciling <em>Adventureland</em> in for $8.1M, which would still be an impressive $4,350 Per Theatre Average.</p>
<p>Also continuing to perform well will be <em>I Love You, Man</em> (Dreamworks/Paramount), adding another $7.9M or so (a small drop in the 35%-40% range). It is possible that the John Hamburg buddy comedy could top $50M by Monday.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I took my five-year-old son (Ed) and seven-year-old daughter (Ahmi) to see &#8220;Monsters vs. Aliens.&#8221; We got our Elvis Costello 3D glasses and wore them at all the wrong times during the television commercials that come on before the movie trailers. My kids didn&#8217;t know but I was mostly interested in their response to the 3D imagery. That&#8217;s right, I went to &#8220;Monsters vs. Aliens&#8221; primarily for human experimentation. They reached out to grab objects that appeared to float in front of them, but the greatest of all expressions came to their faces every time I looked over at them: smiles.</p>

<p>Reese Witherspoon voices Ginormica, a 49-foot-tall woman with an awesome figure. More to love. But her fiance is a sleazy weatherman from Modesto, as if there&#8217;s any other kind. Ginormica is the straight person in the adventure; she carries the hero&#8217;s burden of bringing any kind of depth or drama to a 90 minute farce. Her comedy relief side-kicks are fish man, cockroach man, a big Mothra maggot and the show stealing gelatinous B.O.B. voiced by Seth Rogen.<span id="more-91350"></span></p>
<p>I can&#8217;t say my take on the movie is unbiased, in that I know half of the animators on the project and am a huge fan of Dreamworks animation.  I&#8217;ve met director Conrad Vernon and am a huge fan of Katzenberg.</p>
<p>Folks might make the mistake of comparing Dreamworks&#8217; features to Pixar works. These are completely different companies and they appeal to different aspects of the broadest audience. Like the classic Disney animation model, Pixar&#8217;s works are richer, subtler, and more technically accomplished. But Dreamworks Animation calls to mind classic Warner Brothers&#8217; cartoons that were low-brow, sarcastic, and populist. &#8220;Monsters vs. Aliens&#8221; is blue collar entertainment and as I looked around at the audience of happy families, I was very thankful that these kinds of movies are still being made. With most of Dreamworks animated features selling north of $250 million at the box office, they help keep family entertainment profitable and viable.</p>
<p>As a fan of monster movies, &#8217;50s sci-fi, and Godzilla flicks, &#8220;Monsters vs. Aliens&#8221; offers layers of jokes on top of tributes on top of some unashamed clunkers. I always admire a guy who can tell a joke he knows is stupid but isn&#8217;t trying to impress with his I.Q. when he&#8217;s trying to share a laugh.</p>
<p>The 3D movie experience felt like an unnecessary gimmick&#8211;usually I found myself thinking about the layered effects instead of the story.  The movie trailers for a bunch of other 3D movies coming out didn&#8217;t show any real promise either.</p>
<p>Finally, on the way home I turned around to Edward and Ahmi and asked, &#8220;Thumbs up or thumbs down?&#8221; They both smiled and put their thumbs up. They already requested the DVD when it comes out.</p>

<p>But this is more than a conventional 35MM movie. This kind of number sends a message to theatre owners, credit markets and other studios that the all-new Digital 3-D is here to stay. With 40+ major 3-D movies on the way to the marketplace, it was important for <em>MVA</em> to demonstrate the potential of this new technology.</p>

<p>Yes, Dreamworks Animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted more 3-D screens to be ready (he was hoping for at least 1,000 more), but this is a triumph.</p>
<p>As always, I am monitoring the Twitter-verse for instant reactions from movie-goers who have seen the film on opening day. It is very hard to find anyone with a negative reaction.</p>

<p>The 3-D version of <em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em> is presented in modern Digital 3-D. The original 3-D movies of the 1950’s like <em>Bwana Devil</em>, starring Robert Stack, were primitive, but became a sensation. That movie’s tagline was “A Lion in Your Lap, A Lover in Your Arms,” and it was presented using polarized images by Arch Oboler’s production company.</p>

<p>Then Oboler and a former US military 3-D mapmaker developed trioptiscope that allowed images to float off of the screen. They dubbed this Space-Vision, and it required the use of those infamous cardboard glasses with the red and green cellophane lenses. Oboler released a movie called <em>The Bubble</em> in the late 1960&#8217;s, which failed to catch on, and then it was renamed and re-released in 1976 as <em>The Fantastic Invasion of Planet Earth</em>. The modest success of the latter version of the movie led to a new generation of filmmakers trying their hand at 3-D. Along came<em> Friday the Thirteenth: Part 3-D </em>(1982),<em> Jaws 3-D</em> (1983) and <em>Amityville Horror 3-D</em> (1983). Same Space-Vision technology with cardboard glasses and loads of cheap gimmickry.</p>

<p>Based on an opening weekend of this magnitude, <em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em> will chart a course for $190M-$200M in the US. It is possible that it will exceed the $215M scored by last summer’s <em>Kung Fu Panda</em>, also from Dreamworks. The worldwide box office number may top $525M.</p>

<p>Lionsgate is proving that there is always room for a genre pic with a surprising upside surprise for <em>The Haunting in Connecticut</em>. With Oscar nominee Virginia Madsen (<em>Sideways</em>) as the only real name on the marquee, the low budget PG-13 scarefest scored a far-above-expectations $9.6M on opening day to kick off what should be a possible $22.9M weekend. (I would argue that the incredibly creepy poster is responsible for the surprisingly strong debut.)</p>

<p>Summit&#8217;s <em>Knowing</em>, directed by Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, has held up far better-than-expected. Last weekend&#8217;s champ added $4.6M on its second Friday, and its 3-day target is $14.4M, enough for third place. That would give the film a 10-day cume of $45.91M.</p>

<p>The hilarious <em>I Love You, Man</em> (Dreamworks/Paramount) will probably dip only 30% or so from its opening. The John Hamburg comedy delivered another $4M in ticket sales, and it is #4 and cruising toward a possible $12.2M by Monday morning for a new cume of $36.6M.</p>

<p>Bad news for Tony Gilroy&#8217;s <em>Duplicity</em> (Universal), starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. The adult comedy/mystery slumped to just $2.3M to start the frame, and it will manage only a fifth-place finish with $7.5M or so. That is a 47% drop and a new domestic take of just over $25M.</p>

The action flick managed only a disastrous $1.8M on Friday and is headed for an underwhelming $5M opening.</p>

Many of those playdates are multiple screen engagements. In fact, MVA will be on over 7,000 screens. Screen counts are generally treated as “state secrets” at studios. Sony was able to secure a reported 10,000 screens for <em>Spider-Man 3</em> with its 4,252 playdates back in May of 2007 (that’s an average of 2.35 screens per playdate). The all-time playdate record still belongs to <em>The Dark Knight</em> last July with 4,366, but <em>TDK</em>&#8217;s screen count was just over 9,200 (2.1 screens per location). Based on that calculation, Dreamworks/Paramount has on average 1.7 screens at each of its playdates.</p>

<p style="text-align: left">This is a big, broad 93 minute family film, not a long, dark comic book opus (<em>Spider-Man 3</em> was 139 minutes long and <em>The Dark Knight</em> was 152 minutes). The main reason for <em>MVA</em>&#8217;s high screen count is 3-D. Athough when Katzenberg announced <em>Monsters Vs. Aliens</em>, he envisioned as many as 4,000 3-D screens, the economy has not cooperated, slowing digital conversion and limiting the number of 3-D runs. The final count of actual 3-D engagements is an estimated 2,218 (that includes 143 IMAX 3-D runs).</p>

If you have not seen one of the all-new digital 3-D releases, you must first forget about past experiences with 3-D.  Hollywood’s first flirtation was in the 1950’s with movies like <em>House of Wax</em> and <em>Bwana Devil</em>. Then during my high school years, the early 1980’s, 3-D made a brief resurgence with <em>Friday the Thirteenth: Part 3-D</em> (1982), <em>Jaws 3-D</em> (1983) and <em>Amityville Horror 3-D</em> (1983). The technology hadn’t changed. It was  still cardboard glasses with colored cellophane lenses and loads of cheap gimmickry.</p>

<p>This new 3-D technology is very different. It is made possible by digital presentation along with Real-D 3-D added. The cost of converting an individual theatre to 3-D is about $100,000 per screen. That includes digital projection, the most expensive piece at $75,000, the Real-D system, the special screen required and all installation. When Jeffrey Katzenberg planted his 3-D blockbuster <em>Monsters Vs. Aliens</em> on the release calendar two years ago, he could not have anticipated the worldwide economic meltdown.</p>

<p style="text-align: left">Instead of exhibitors frantically ramping up digital conversion to show <em>Monsters Vs. Aliens</em> on as many 3-D screens as possible, the frozen credit markets stifled progress. Theatre chains and independent theatres have had trouble securing the financing to undertake conversions, and it is very uphill, even with distributors offering to pay a “virtiual print fee” to help cover the costs.</p>

<p style="text-align: left">Dreamworks isn’t the only studio with a lot riding on the success of <em>Monsters Vs. Aliens</em>. Disney/Pixar’s next film <em>Up</em> is in 3-D, then there’s the Robert Zemeckis 3-D version of <em>A Christmas Carol</em> for the holidays, and in December, James Cameron’s <em>Avatar</em>, his first major wide release since <em>Titanic</em>. There are over 40 major 3-D movies in the pipeline right now. If <em>Monsters Vs. Aliens</em> scores big, it will be a strong incentive for theatre-owners to convert more theatres to digital.</p>

<p style="text-align: left">If you are taking the kids to see <em>MVA</em> this weekend, be prepared for a $2-$3.50 upcharge. It may seem outrageous, but soon after you settle into your seat, you will realize that it is worth the extra couple of bucks. Digital 3-D is truly spectacular, and not in a gimmicky way. You just feel like you are in a different world. You’ll forget you’re wearing the stylish new 3-D glasses, and you can take part in what I think is a major innovation for the industry.</p>
<p>Reviews for <em>Monsters Vs. Aliens</em> are outstanding (<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/monsters_vs_aliens/" target="_blank">73% Fresh</a> on Rotten Tomatoes), and the pre-opening tracking is now sizzling. Given that there is an upcharge on 3-D and a bigger upcharge on 3-D IMAX, I think <em>MVA</em> will beat the $50M-$55M industry expectation. I believe this one will get past $60M by Monday, and, with Easter in two weeks and spring break taking place around the country for school kids, this picture has a real shot at $200M domestic and could surpass <em>Kung Fu Panda</em>’s $215M. Worldwide, the cutting edge animated movie will likely exceed $600M.</p>
<p style="text-align: left"><a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/files/2009/03/the_haunting_in_connecticut_poster2.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-89938" src="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/files/2009/03/the_haunting_in_connecticut_poster2-194x300.jpg" alt="" width="194" height="300" /></a>The new Lionsgate genre pic <em>The Haunting in Connecticut</em> seems destined for mid-teens and a distant second, although word-of-mouth for <em>I Love You Man</em> is very good, and Dreamworks has an outside shot to finish 1-2. The Nic Cage sci-fi thriller <em>Knowing</em> (Summit) is likely to dip more than 50%, while the entertaining Julia Roberts-Clive Owen comedy/mystery <em>Duplicity</em> (Universal) seems as though it will hold more strongly, possibly down just 30%-35% from opening weekend for a second top five finish.</p>
