The current economic crisis is not a failure of capitalism, but a failure of culture. Citizens United Productions’ film Generation Zero explores the cultural roots of the global financial meltdown – beginning with the narcissism of the 1960s which spread like a virus through the self-indulgent ’90s and exploded across the world in the present economic cataclysm.

Brought to you by award-winning writer and director Stephen Bannon, Generation Zero is the first film in the “Tea Party Trilogy,” which also includes Fire from the Heartland and Battle for America. Featuring financial and cultural experts, authors, and pundits, including Lou Dobbs, Lawrence Kudlow, Tobin Smith, Victor Davis Hanson, Shelby Steele, Charles Krauthammer, Dick Morris, and Newt Gingrich, Generation Zero exposes the untold story of how the mindset of the Baby Boomers sowed the seeds of economic disaster that will be reaped by coming generations. Sean Hannity did an exclusive one hour special on Generation Zero, and the documentary has received extensive media acclaim.

This month, the Obama Administration will be making decisions that will have a major impact on the future of our country and economy. From the upcoming debt ceiling fight to a possible government shutdown, March 2011 will be a big test to see if we can restore America’s fiscal sanity. Generation Zero will give you the perspective needed to see how we got into this financial mess in the first place and what we can do about it. Our leaders have a chance this month to address it before the next crisis occurs, if only they will listen.

Last week at CPAC I ran into liberal Hollywood icon Richard Dreyfuss. The rumor around CPAC was that Dreyfuss had seen that shining city on the hill and was “turning conservative.” I wondered if I would see him because I have enjoyed some of his movies.

The opportunity arose when we both finished interviews on radio row. I approached Dreyfuss, put out my hand, and said “Hi, I am David Bossie, President of Citizens United.” Dreyfuss’ eyes lit up like he just saw Jaws and he said, “You’re going to have a hard time getting into heaven if you believe in that sort of stuff.” I was taken aback and asked, “Why?” Dreyfuss then went on a diatribe equating the Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision to the Khmer Rouge. He compared me to Pol Pot “stacking skulls” back at my office. He actually used his hands to seemingly act out the stacking of skulls. I replied by saying, “I thought you would have been supportive of my First Amendment Supreme Court case because you are in the business of supporting the First Amendment.” He did not have a clear response and looked like a frustrated, institution-bound Dr. Leo Marvin from his Oscar-worthy performance in What About Bob?

For someone who was at CPAC to promote a civics and civility campaign, calling me one of the worst mass murderers in history strikes me as awfully hypocritical. But this is not the first time Dreyfuss has used extreme and offensive language to make a political point. He once compared former Vice President Dick Cheney to Adolf Hitler and agreed with comments that wished Cheney dead (though later apologized).

Citizens United and our United States Supreme Court case has struck a nerve with the crazy Left. We won a victory for free speech and the Left will stop at nothing to demonize it with false claims. I consider it a badge of honor to be the subject of vitriolic rhetoric from the likes of Richard Dreyfuss. Dreyfuss lives in a Hollywood cocoon filled with out-of-touch liberal elitists, and does not understand how most of America works or what the First Amendment actually states.

To complete this Hollywood ending, I ran into Dreyfuss the next day and said, “I know we disagree on the First Amendment, but Citizens United Productions is working on a children’s film about American history.” His eyes lit up again, but this time he invited me to his house in San Diego to talk about the project. I wonder if I should bring my stack of skulls to the meeting. Only in Hollywood.

James P. Pinkerton at Fox News Online:

“Generation Zero” will do for the tea party movement–and the larger cause of controlling government spending–what Al Gore’s 2006 movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” did for the global warming debate.

If I told you that “Generation Zero” is the best movie about deficit spending and national debt that you will ever see, would you think I was making a joke? As in, how much competition can there be in such a category? OK, there’s not much competition in the “fiscal film” category. But “Generation Zero” would win, because it’s a brilliant movie; in reality, it’s a work of art that happens to be about red-ink spending.

—

“Generation Zero” is going to do for the tea party movement–and the larger cause of controlling government spending–what Al Gore’s 2006 movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” did for the global warming debate. There are some differences, however. As we now know, “Truth” was based on a deep fallacy, the idea that “global warming” is happening, even as the earth indeed is cooling. By contrast, “Zero” deals with one of the great struggles of our time; the trillions being spent and overspent are real. Down this wastrel road lies the chaotic fate of a banana republic–or maybe today’s Greece or Zimbabwe.

And of course, whereas “Truth” won an Oscar and helped propel Gore to a Nobel Peace Prize, “Zero” is unlikely to win a single prize from left-leaning Hollywood or from even lefter-leaning international organizations such as the Nobel Institute. But, unlike “Truth,” which caused no real change in American politics, “Zero” is certain to have a huge political impact here at home.

Written and directed by Stephen K. Bannon and produced by David Bossie, founder and president of Citizens United, the right-leaning activist group, “Zero” is undeniably a work of advocacy, featuing on-air appearances by everyone from Newt Gingrich to Lou Dobbs to Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) But the film should persuade any fair-minded observer that we have a problem.

We’ve all noticed that coverage of the war in Iraq has dropped off over the last year or so. Ever since it became an incontrovertible truth that the Bush Surge worked, The New York Times and MSNBC seem to have decided that there wasn’t much worth covering anymore. Clearly, editors sitting in glass towers in New York City believe that “stories” like Korans being flushed down a toilet sell far more magazines than non-fiction accounts of hope and change in Iraq stemming from the hard work of our armed forces. Now that things are going better in Iraq and controversies are more difficult to create, it doesn’t merit the “coverage” it once did.

This phenomenon, while unfortunate, is not the most egregious failure of the mainstream media in covering the war in Iraq. Focused as they were for the last five years on finding (or inventing from whole cloth) reasons to blast President Bush for anything that happened in Iraq, the reporters tasked with covering the conflict missed some of the most incredible acts of courage and sacrifice that have ever been performed. Four soldiers, sailors, and marines have posthumously been awarded the Medal of Honor for acts of courage performed in Iraq, but few of us could name one of them.

Sadly, the trend in Hollywood has mirrored the mainstream media. In a sad contrast to the epic films from fifty years ago showing the heroic GI vanquishing the evil Nazi, those in control of Hollywood today seem to revel when Americans face setbacks and dismiss any sign of progress. Major studio film projects have been almost uniformly shrill in their anti-war message, reflecting the usual Hollywood liberal fallacy that their views are representative of what the rest of the country believes.

The failure of such thinly-veiled polemics like Lions for Lambs and Rendition belies the fact that, while Hollywood liberals are convinced that they speak for the rest of us, most Americans cannot stomach their brand of defeatism. While I never expected either of those films to succeed, it wasn’t until I made a trip out to Los Angeles early last year that I realized what needed to be done and what we, as conservative filmmakers, could do.

Last spring, I was in Los Angeles where I had the privilege of seeing a trailer for a documentary entitled Brothers At War. Brothers At War was written and directed by Jake Rademacher, a filmmaker who followed two of his brothers as they deployed to Iraq. He embedded with four different combat units to give the audience a perspective on the war that doesn’t come through in the mainstream media. Subsequently, Brothers At War would win the Best Documentary award at the 2008 GI Film Festival.

After screening the Brothers At War trailer, I was struck with the idea that I needed to make a war film. It occurred to me that for all the ink that has been spilled about the causes and conduct of the war in Iraq, up until that point there had not been a documentary film that really captured the essence of what it is like to be a combat soldier in Iraq. A film had not yet been made to show something that your average Hollywood liberal doesn’t understand: while there is plenty of disagreement over the war itself, it is close to impossible to find an American citizen who is not proud of the men and women in the military and their service to this country.

I realized that there were thousands of stories of honor, sacrifice, and courage from the war in Iraq that were just waiting to be captured on film for the country to see. Clearly, Hollywood wasn’t leaping at the opportunity and so it fell to us, we few conservative filmmakers, to seek out these soldiers to make sure that their sacrifices are remembered.

Almost exactly one year after I first saw that trailer for Brothers At War last spring, I am proud to say that Citizens United Productions’ latest documentary, Perfect Valor, will make its world debut at the 2009 GI Film Festival. Perfect Valor tells the stories of soldiers and marines who fought in the 2004 battle for the city of Fallujah. This is not a pro-war or anti-war film. Instead, it is our attempt to honor the men and women who serve though giving audiences a small glimpse of what it was like to fight house to house and street to street in the most dangerous city in the world.

Narrated by actor, radio host and former Senator Fred Thompson, Perfect Valor introduces the audience to a Navy Cross recipient recognized for extraordinary gallantry under fire during the assault on Fallujah. A true American hero still haunted by his experience in Iraq. We listen to the family of a fallen Marine as they tell the story of their sacrifice. We hear the harrowing tale of a battalion surgeon who risked his own life to move an aid station forward, into the middle of the fight – a decision that saved thirty lives.

Hearing first-hand accounts of these incredible acts from the people who were there in Fallujah is an intense experience, and it is all too easy to forget that each of their comrades has a similar story to tell. While I’m not holding my breath for all of Hollywood to come around and realize that there is more of an audience for films that rightly glorify the sacrifices and heroism of American troops rather than harshly political tantrums by left-wing actors and directors, we do have some hope. HBO’s recent original production, Taking Chance, is one of those stories and by no coincidence was HBO’s best rated original production in five years.

I encourage conservatives to take a moment to visit the GI Film Festival and look at the amazing work being done by filmmakers around the country to capture the incredible stories that the men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan have to tell. The mainstream media and Hollywood have abdicated their responsibility to tell these stories, so it is put to us as patriotic Americans to seek them out. There is no better place than the GI Film Festival, where Perfect Valor will be just one of hundreds of films that deserve to be seen. The men and women featured in these works have fought and died for our sake. Now it is our duty to remember their sacrifice.

Hosted and narrated by Newt and Callista Gingrich, “Ronald Reagan: Rendezvous With Destiny” looks at the life and varied careers of America’s 40th President and would make an excellent primer for anyone interested in what made the great man tick and the incredible legacy he left behind. Well paced and insightful, the 90 minute documentary presents a number of brand new interviews with, to name a few, Bill Kristol, Fred Barnes, James Baker, Linda Chavez, Bill Bennett, P.J. O’Rourke, Michael Reagan and Edwin Meese, along with ABC newsman Sam Donaldson, who had the White House beat during Reagan’s two terms, biographer’s Douglas Brinkley and Lou Cannon, and Poland’s Lech Walesa.

While Reagan’s childhood, Hollywood career, and two terms as California Governor are covered, the meat of the focus is on Reagan’s handling of the Cold War. Through the interviews and Reagan’s own handwritten diaries, we’re given an insider’s look at the beat by beat history in what proved to be, much to everyone’s surprise, including many of Reagan’s allies, an astonishingly successful quest to put the Soviet Union on “the ash heap of history.”

There are many Reagan documentaries currently available, including some very good ones, but what makes “Rendezvous With Destiny” unique is its focus on how the President’s mind worked. While the main story covers the intriguing high-stakes chess moves of the Cold War, the overall theme is a fascinating examination of Reagan’s psychology and mindset as he made those moves. It’s easy to forget just how controversial and out-of-the-box Reagan’s thinking was at the time, but having those who were there frame the historical and political context for us is a reminder that Ronald Reagan was a true visionary.

Planned by the filmmakers or not, the time spent on Reagan’s successful economic policies comes with a rich irony. Reagan came into office facing a very troubled economy, much worse than what we’re going through today. The result of the tax cutting and deregulation known as Reaganomics not only lifted America out of economic crisis but started us down the path of an unprecedented quarter-century of growth broken only by a couple of short, shallow recessions. Reliving this while at the same time realizing our current President is meeting today’s economic troubles doing the complete opposite of what Reagan proved works is — well, I guess by “irony,” I meant “scary.”

Written and directed by Kevin Knoblock, “Rendezvous” is professionally produced, well shot and great looking in widescreen. All the production values are across the board superb and Anthony Marinelli’s score made enough of an impression that I took a note so as not to forget to mention it. You may already be familiar with the historical beats of Reagan’s life and career, but “Rendezvous” stands out because it allows you to better understand (and appreciate) a great but elusive man.

NOTE: For those of you in the area, the Reagan Presidential Library will host a “Rendezvous with Destiny” premiere in Simi Valley California on Sunday, March 15th. Newt Gingrich will be there and here’s where you can get the specifics.

I’ve been in Los Angeles six years and have already visited the library four times. There’s no place like it.
