<p><strong>6.  “Being exploited is different from being empowered ” &#8211; </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083929/"><em><strong>Fast Times at Ridgemont High</strong></em></a><strong> (1982) </strong></p>
<p>Often too-easily dismissed as a raunchy teen sex comedy, <em>Fast Time </em>was<em> </em>a tremendously influential and important mirror on young America in the early 1980s.  The fact that it is gut-bustlingly funny – Sean Penn’s turn as surfer/stoner Jeff Spicoli remains his only role where he doesn’t annoy me – seems to overshadow the serious undercurrents, as does the ample nudity culminating in the unforgettable swimming pool scene starring the glorious Phoebe Cates.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">&#8212;&#8211;</p>
<p>However, there is a very, very dark undercurrent to this movie that provides a serious lesson to young people.  Jennifer Jason-Leigh’s Stacy is a pretty but not-so-bright 15/16 year old who does not understand the difference between love and sex.  In a world of absolutely no parents (not a single one is ever seen), she tries to find love (or at least attention) by basically trying to have tacky sex with every guy she meets – and it’s heartbreaking.  She’s not “empowered” – she’s used.  The ugly scene where she loses her virginity to a guy in his 20s in a Little League dug-out staring at graffiti reading “Surf Nazis Must Die” is a better repudiation of the “hook-up” culture than a hundred lectures.</p>
<p>After scaring off the one guy who actually likes her for herself by trying to bed him too, she seeks comfort underneath his skanky pal.  A grim, humiliating encounter in a pool house leaves her pregnant and she immediately seeks an abortion.  Regardless of one’s stand on the life issue, one cannot be anything other than horrified at how the fact she sees herself as literally nothing but a mere receptacle leads her to feel nothing at all about her decision.<span id="more-432940"></span></p>
<p>But there is hope.  The film ends with her finally back with the boy who actually loves her, and a final title card assures us that they remain together and “still haven’t gone all the way yet.”</p>
<p><strong>7.   “You make your destiny” &#8212; </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454921/"><em><strong>The Pursuit of Happyness</strong></em></a><strong> (2006) </strong></p>
<p>Liberal filmmakers would have you believe that you are nothing but a victim of forces you cannot control, and that without their help you have no future.  That is especially true for minorities, who liberal ideology requires be told again and again that without the help of their liberal masters they can never succeed.  But, of course, liberalism never leads to success, only to a few more scraps in the form of entitlements offered in exchange for perpetual ballot box fealty to the elite overlords.</p>

<p><em>The Pursuit of Happyness</em> drives a Mac truck through that loser paradigm.  Will Smith is the lead in the true story of a man who hits bottom but simply will not quit.  Believing in himself, working his butt off, taking risks and – shock! – out-performing the competition, he goes from homeless to capitalist success story.</p>
<p>He doesn’t look for handouts.  He doesn’t sit back waiting for his the liberal overlords to decide what he gets.  He embraces the challenge of the free market and through sheer dedication makes himself a winner.  He makes his own destiny; he doesn’t wait to be told what it can or will be.</p>
<p>As such, <em>Pursuit</em> may well be the one of the most subversive films of the last decade.</p>
<p><strong>8.  “Character is what you do when the stakes are the highest” – </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397892/"><em><strong>Bolt</strong></em></a><strong><em> </em>(2008) </strong></p>
<p>This terrific Disney cartoon about a TV star dog who thought he was the superhero he plays on television then finds himself separated from the little girl who owns him makes a huge point about character.  It comes up most clearly at the end, where his little girl is trapped on a burning soundstage.  The dog who had replaced Bolt runs away, leaving her in the fire.  But Bolt, though he now knows he is just a normal hound, goes back in anyway.</p>

<p>Character isn’t something that you wear like a medal.  It’s what you <em>do</em> when the chips are down, when all hell is breaking lose, when everyone else is running away.</p>
<p>The message of <em>Bolt</em> is a powerful statement that is especially applicable to young people.  My little girl saw Bolt as a good dog who would not leave his girl behind and understood why that mattered; her dad thought of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lT6tCQioI9E&amp;feature=related">his own heroes</a> who would not leave those they swore to protect no matter what the cost.</p>
<p>And when young people are a little older, they’ll be ready for the similar messages of <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/">Black Hawk Down</a></em> – “It’s what you do right now that makes a difference” and “Leave no man behind.”  (<em>BHD</em> also teaches the vital lesson that there is no substitute for the firepower of heavy armor and artillery.)  But <em>Bolt</em> is a great foundation  for learning about character – as well as a great movie.</p>
<p><strong>9.  “The west is worth defending” – </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416449/"><em><strong>300</strong></em></a><strong> (2006) </strong></p>
<p>If you enjoy lame liberal flicks that spend most of their time apologizing for our Western culture, you’ll probably want to miss <em>300</em>.  I’m sure there will be plenty of seats available for the revival of <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0891527/">Lions for Lambs</a> </em>down at the Nuart.</p>
<p>But if you unapologetically support the victory of the West in our current war against <em>jihadi</em> barbarism and its related pathologies, you might dig <em>300</em>.  It makes no excuses about the superiority of our culture and our freedoms, which is why liberals <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2007/mar/19/thereleaseofthebox">hate</a> <a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2161450/">it</a>.</p>

<p><em>300</em> is the highly stylized story of the small Spartan contingent that fought a legendary delaying action at a narrow pass called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae">Thermopylae</a> in northern Greece that allowed the rest of the Greeks to prepare to meet the Persian horde and their self-styled demigod king. They were slaughtered to a man, but succeeded in their mission.</p>
<p>The beauty of <em>300</em> is the fearlessness with which the filmmakers tell the truth – though <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-giltz/is-300-a-vile-racist-diat_b_58638.html">it is unclear if they intended to make that statement</a>, make it they do.  While imperfect, the Greeks as portrayed in the film embody the Western values of individual freedom while the Persian hordes are mere faceless slaves.  The Greeks stand and fight because they are free men who choose to do so; the Persian soldiers fight with whips at their backs, mere cannon fodder for a tyrant’s ambition.</p>
<p>Nothing has changed in the last couple thousand years.</p>
<p>It’s almost shocking to see a major Hollywood film make clear that our way of life is unequivocally worth defending, and death in battle against tyranny is infinitely preferable to “life” as a slave.  When folks get all wrapped up about “creeping sharia” I usually mention that it doesn’t worry us American soldiers because we would never be alive to see it happen; we’d all be lying dead surrounded by empty magazines, spent shell casings, and the bodies of our enemies.  If you don’t understand that perspective, you might want to skip <em>300</em>.  You might also want try and see if your doctor can help you out with a spine transplant.</p>
<p><strong>10.  “Your personal happiness is not the most important thing in the world” – </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/"><em><strong>Casablanca</strong></em></a><strong> (1942) </strong></p>
<p>Besides being arguably the greatest movie ever made, <em>Casablanca</em> also teaches one of conservatism&#8217;s most important lessons.  The usual Hollywood pap tells you that your personal short term desires are your only guide; just look at the unspeakable moral disaster that is <em><a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jjmnolte/2010/12/14/top-25-left-wing-films-24-the-english-patient-1996/">The English Patient</a></em>.  While conservatism is about individual liberty, with liberty comes the responsibility to occasionally put your own needs aside when duty calls.</p>
<p>Hollywood’s moral compass was not always broken.  In <em>Casablanca</em>, Rick throws away his chance for happiness with Ilsa in order to help defeat the Nazis.  Watch this classic scene – probably Hollywood’s finest hour both artistically and morally:</p>

<p>Here’s the key quote.  Try imagining it coming out of the word processor of one of the pampered, over-paid Ivy League twerps churning out scripts today:<strong> </strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Rick:  We&#8217;ll always have Paris. We didn&#8217;t have, we, we lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night.<br />
Ilsa:  When I said I would never leave you.<br />
Rick:  And you never will. But I&#8217;ve got a job to do, too. Where I&#8217;m going, you can&#8217;t follow. What I&#8217;ve got to do, you can&#8217;t be any part of. Ilsa, I&#8217;m no good at being noble, but it doesn&#8217;t take much to see that the problems of three little people don&#8217;t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you&#8217;ll understand that.</p></blockquote>
<p>Let’s assume there is still a director out there who would allow that many lines of dialogue in a row without a shaky camera jump cut.  Even then, we’d still get Victor Laszlo as an uptight, probably Christian, creep with the unreasonable expectation that his wife not start banging another man just because she finds him sexy.  Instead of sending her away, Rick would probably tell off Mr. Jesus J. Stickuphisrear, then he and Ilsa would jump on the plane together.  Let other people deal with the Nazis – inconveniences like honor and duty just get in the way of validating one’s own feelings!  Plus, they’d probably cast Ashton Kutcher as Rick and Katherine Heigl as Ilsa.  And switch the location to Vegas.  And change the Nazis into CIA agents.  And make Sam into a streetwise hustler played by 50 Cent, who could also do a hip-hop version of <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vThuwa5RZU">As Time Goes By</a></em> that somehow incorporates the phrase “my bitches.”</p>
<p>No, the fact is that sometimes your problems don’t amount to a hill of beans, that you have to make hard choices and do the right thing even where – gasp! – it might make you feel bad.  <em>Casablanca</em> is easy to take because of great actors, a great script, and a great story, but its message is strong medicine.  And, as we enter a second decade of (open) warfare for our civilization’s survival, it could not be timelier.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-</p>
<p>Again, this list is by no means complete, but it is evidence that within our popular culture there is the capacity for art to make powerful conservative statements.  After all, that is the whole point of <em>Big Hollywood</em>.  We cannot just leave our culture to the left – we know where that leads.  Instead, we need to identify and support positive popular culture, to demand it instead of accepting whatever crap the Hollywood elite tries to force down our throats.  And we need to fight back by calling out and mocking mercilessly the lefty nonsense offered to us by the Hollywoodoids, so coming soon:  “The Top 10 Idiotic Leftist Movie Messages.”</p>
<p>And it turns out that, try as I might, I cannot present a list of vital movies messages without citing <em>Heat</em>.  So here’s on key one that’s helped guide me in my daily life:  “<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7hTvLfifb4">It always helps to use intensive, controlled automatic weapons fire, along with rapid maneuver, to defeat your enemies</a>.”  That’s truly a message we can all relate to.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We conservatives spend a lot of time criticizing Hollywood’s failings, calling out its errors and pointing to its hypocrisies – and this is entirely appropriate since so much of the crap spewing out of the Tinseltown cookie cutter is borderline commie nitwittery masquerading as profundity.  But if nothing good ever came out of Hollywood – if everything it produced hewed to the same lame party-line pinkoism rejected everywhere except in Westside L.A., university faculty lounges, and Washington, D.C. – we all would have stopped paying attention long ago.</p>

<p>And many conservatives have.  Many of us have thrown our hands in the air and opted out of popular culture completely, exhausted from enduring <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jjmnolte/2010/04/05/anncouncment-the-era-of-the-leftist-hollywood-sucker-punch-is-over/">liberal sucker punches</a> buried within crummy flicks about magic robots battling Dick Cheney vampire clones that we pay $12.50 to see in theaters maintained at the hygiene level of your average bus station men&#8217;s room.  You can hardly blame them for giving up.</p>
<p>But as tempting as it is to withdraw from the battlefield, to dig in and hope it somehow changes, surrender was never an option.  This is our culture, not theirs.  And they don’t get to control it. </p>
<p>The fact is that among the detritus of American popular culture, there are voices of sanity.  Sure, they are nearly drowned out by over-praised hacks like <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jjmnolte/2010/12/08/hollywood-screenwriter-famous-for-enjoying-drugs-angry-at-palin-for-enjoying-moose-killing/">Aaron Sorkin</a> and over-indulged clowns like <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/author/kschlichter/">Oliver Stone</a>.  Yet, occasionally, Hollywood has allowed positive, conservative messages to slip through.<span id="more-432496"></span></p>
<p>Sure, some of them are from long ago, but we have never forgotten them.  In fact, we have embraced them and treasured them, a powerful demonstration of the fact that good commonsense messages can also be commercially viable.  Some of them are more recent as well, teachers of vital lessons that somehow the guard dogs of liberal culture missed.</p>
<p>The following list is by no means complete – the commenters will no doubt offer hordes of other worthies between their observations about how I am insane and/or stupid.  It is simply these ten solid conservative messages that I have found particularly meaningful – however, please note that <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/kschlichter/2010/10/17/movies-we-love-heat-the-action-is-the-juice/"><em>Heat</em></a> has earned <em>emeritus</em> status and is not found on the list.</p>
<p>So, in no particular order:</p>
<p><strong>1.  “Evil must be confronted and defeated” &#8211; </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120737/"><em><strong>Lord</strong></em></a><em><strong> of the </strong></em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167261/"><em><strong>Rings</strong></em></a><em><strong> </strong></em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167260/"><em><strong>Trilogy</strong></em></a><strong><em> (2001-2003)</em> </strong></p>
<p>This magnificent three-part epic illustrates several great conservative lessons through the tale of Frodo, a gentle hobbit who finds himself the only hope for the world of free peoples as a wicked tyranny arises.  The various nations and races of free creatures are disorganized and confused, with some thinking they can simply hide or wait out the terror.  But J.R.R. Tolkien, who fought in the miserable trenches of the First World War and later watched the rise of Hitler, understood that there is no sanctuary from aggressive evil.  His characters, at a terrible cost, choose to march out and meet the enemy.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pki6jbSbXIY"><img src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/Pki6jbSbXIY/default.jpg"/></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Of particular note is the frivolous, care-free land from which Frodo hails, the Shire, a green and pleasant realm that considers itself far from danger and immune to evil.  But, as blogger Kellie Jane Adan recently <a href="http://j.mp/eEoxK9">discussed</a>, Frodo had the wisdom to see what his happy countrymen could not or would not – that the enemies of freedom will not just go away if you ignore them.  Even those who get eaten last still get eaten in the end.  The peril of freedom is that it can lead a people to forget that it comes with a price tag, and that the price is sometimes payable in blood.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It does not take a genius to see the parallels between <em>The Lord of the Rings</em> and the real world of Tolkien’s time, nor the parallels to our world of today.  The <em>jihadi</em> movement and the rogue crime syndicates masquerading as nations such as Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela make no secret of their intentions.  Still, the Western elites remain willfully blind, looking inward and caring only about their own petty personal interests.  <em>The Lord of the Rings</em> is a powerful rejoinder to that foolishness, and one every parent should ensure their children see and understand.</p>
<p><strong>2.   “Leaders lead by example” &#8212; </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0277434/"><em><strong>We Were Soldiers</strong></em></a><strong> (2002) </strong></p>
<p>America’s bookstores are filled with tedious management tomes written by college professors and CEOs, but while many of their books’ titles contain the word “Leadership,” comparing their tepid version of management to true leadership is like comparing Justin Bieber to AC/DC in terms of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bomv-6CJSfM">rocking</a>.  If you want to learn something about what leaders do – and can put aside Mel Gibson’s personal character failures – pop in a DVD of <em>We Were Soldiers</em>.</p>
<p>A bloody and harrowing account of the ferocious 1965 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_la_Drang">Battle of Ia Drang</a>, Gibson’s (then) Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore is the quintessential United States Army officer, the first off the chopper during the air assault and always in the thick of the fight.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfImiqpf6eo"><img src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/dfImiqpf6eo/default.jpg"/></a></p>
<p>Watch as Gibson surveys and assesses the situation, makes his tough decision to call in dangerous close-in air support, and then joins in the fight alongside his troopers.  Playing a cavalry battalion commander – a job I held, though not while deployed – Gibson is everywhere on the battlefield, encouraging his men, controlling the fight and most importantly (when all hell breaks loose) staying calm.</p>
<p>And it’s an accurate portrayal, not only because the battle tracks the fight depicted in Lieutenant General (Retired) Moore’s superb <a href="http://www.amazon.com/were-Soldiers-Once-Young-Drang/dp/0679411585">book</a>.  I actually saw LTG Moore speak at Fort Benning during my Infantry Officer Advanced Course in 1994.  Gibson may be a creep in his personal life, but he did LTG Moore right in the film.  And do not forget Sam Elliot’s awesome portrayal of Command Sergeant Major Basil Plumley – <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/kschlichter/2009/05/11/sergeants-rock/">a commander is only as good as his NCOs</a>.</p>
<p><em>We Were Soldiers </em>demonstrates that a leader isn’t some guy at a desk at the other end of a phone line filling out paperwork.  Leaders lead.  Period.</p>
<p><strong>3.  “The only colors that matter in America are red, white, and blue” – </strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rawwMraLLl4"><em><strong>Glory</strong></em></a><strong> (1989) </strong></p>
<p>Liberals talk a good game about diversity.  But more than any other institution in America, the military lives it.  Once again, <em>We Were Soldiers</em> sums that up:</p>

<p>But that was not always true.  During the Civil War, freed blacks had to fight for their right to fight.  <em>Glory</em> tells the story of those incredible America soldiers and the white officers appointed to lead them.  The conservative lesson is clear – nonsense like color makes no difference; character is everything.  The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/54th_Massachusetts_Volunteer_Infantry">54<sup>th</sup> Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry</a> proved its bravery in battle, not thanks to some quota or by some special dispensation by liberals who deep down think no one else can prosper without their help.  They did it themselves:</p>

<p>Colonel Shaw, the white commander of the 54<sup>th</sup> was killed during the storming of Fort Wagner.  According to legend, the Confederates refused to return his body, instead burying him with his black troops.  They thought it was an insult.  In fact, there could be no higher honor for an American officer.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uzr-tgTQA7Q"><img src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/Uzr-tgTQA7Q/default.jpg"/></a></p>
<p><em>Glory</em> teaches the essential conservative truth that honor, courage, and patriotism are not the province of any one race.  Now, it’s entirely possible that the makers of <em>Glory</em>, like the makers of some of these other films, did not think they were sending a conservative message at all.  If so, they are wrong.  Race means nothing to conservatives, but it means everything to liberals.</p>
<p>Keep in mind that liberals customarily assign any wrongdoing in the past to “conservatives,” as if today’s Tea Party would re-impose child labor and slavery if it had its Neanderthal druthers.  Don’t buy that nonsense.  The next time some liberal starts yapping about racism, just ask him which party, in 2010, hailed as an “<a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2010/0702/Obama-eulogizes-Sen.-Robert-Byrd-under-West-Virginia-skies">icon</a>” a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Byrd">KKK Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops</a>, one who incidentally wrote these hideous words:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side&#8230;Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Hint:  Senator Icon was <em>not</em> a Republican (or a soldier, for that matter).</p>
<p><strong>4.  “You are the check on the power of the state” &#8212; </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050083/"><em><strong>Twelve Angry Men</strong></em></a><strong><em> </em>(1957) </strong></p>
<p>Set inside a jury room during a murder deliberation, a dozen jurors (played by a who’s who of great old-time stars and character actors) start off eager to convict the young defendant and go home.  However, Henry Fonda refuses to be railroaded and forces the others to confront their apathy, personal issues, and racial prejudices.</p>

<p>Another movie that probably thinks it is liberal, <em>Twelve Angry Men</em> appears to believe it is an indictment of pure prejudice.  However, what it really is is a conservative critique of the power of the state and what happens when citizens allow their own interests and biases to cause them to abdicate their responsibility to doubt their government and challenge it.</p>
<p>If the defendant is convicted, he will be executed – there is no greater example of the power of the state.  But as these citizens pick at the government’s case they find flaws and inconsistencies.  The government is not perfect or omniscient – far from it.  The state is as flawed as human beings themselves, and the answer is not to meekly submit to its power but to stand up to it, to limit its powers and to make it justify every exercise of authority.  That’s not anarchy or “hatred of government,” as liberals label any attempt by conservatives to rein in the leviathan – rather, that is the conservative notion that a government of men will be as imperfect as man itself.  Every citizen has an absolute duty to ensure it never slips out of control – even where he’s outnumbered by 11-1 by those who find it easier to conform.</p>
<p><strong>5.  “True capitalists make America great” &#8211; </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038650/"><em><strong>It&#8217;s a Wonderful Life</strong></em></a><strong> (1946) </strong></p>
<p>Brought to the screen just a few years after the Depression ended, <em>IAWL</em> is not an indictment of free enterprise but, rather, a celebration of it.  Some quarter-wit progressives – yeah, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703909904576052011797066654.html?mod=WSJ_hp_MIDDLENexttoWhatsNewsTop">I’m looking at you again Aaron Sorkin</a> – think this classic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Capra">Frank Capra</a> slice of Americana makes Old Man Potter into a capitalist poster child.  More nonsense.  The track record of the policies progressives espouse being unblemished with anything like success, their opinions about this and everything else should be summarily disregarded.</p>
<p>In fact, Potter is only a “capitalist” in the way that Chrysler, General Motors, and AIG are “capitalist” enterprises – he’s the face of a conglomerate tied in with the government (remember how he offers to send the police over to “help” during the panic?) and with other big businesses (remember how he takes over the town bank?).  He <em>is</em> the power structure; the form he takes is “capitalist” only when it suits him.</p>
<p>Potter is not merely about money but about control over others and their lives – and like the liberals we deal with today (including the ones who make most movies), he has <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4ne13Zft9Q">nothing but contempt for regular people</a>. Throw in the word “transfats” or “guns” and Potter might as well be zillionaire Michael Bloomberg decrying the refusal of the masses to conform to his personal vision of how they ought to live their lives.</p>
<p>If alive today, Potter would find himself <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-04-21/democratic-party-helped-by-wall-street-outraising-republicans.html">welcomed to the table</a> with his liberal Democratic co-believers, pausing from making more mischief only to welcome their newest lobbyist, former Senator Chris Dodd.</p>

<p>Jimmy Stewart’s George Bailey is the true capitalist, working hard at the Building &amp; Loan his father started not only to support himself and his family but to help his community.  He doesn’t ask for (or give) handouts.  His pride comes not from making money (though he apparently does okay, which is cool) but by being the guy responsible for helping so many hardworking Americans earn homes. That’s not unusual – when I talk about my business, I talk not about my AGI but about how many people I employ.  In fact, the whole point of the movie is that Bedford Falls is a better place because of George Bailey – and, by extension, the country is better because of similar true capitalists.</p>
<p><em>IAWL </em>is a warning about how self-styled elitists will use every lever of power at their disposal – big business, big government, or whatever – in order to control the lives of others.  Old Man Potter no more represents capitalism than Aaron Sorkin represents sobriety.  As <em>IAWL</em> teaches, we need to be on our guard and in the faces of these creepy petty fascists every single minute of every day.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNWx7_tZRcI"></a>But America’s abundance does not apply to movies about Thanksgiving.  Certainly some exist, but if you review a <a href="http://www.springfieldlibrary.org/reading/thanksgivingmovies.html">list of movies <em>about</em> Thanksgiving</a>, the sad fact is that there are very few good ones.  Many are PC retellings of the original Thanksgiving story – one guess as to who the villains are (Hint:  It’s the dudes with buckles on their hats).  Others are tiresome melodramas about “quirky” families that reaffirm their bonds over plates of turkey, with “quirky” &#8212; meaning &#8220;annoying.&#8221; <span id="more-268190"></span></p>
<p>There simply is not a worthy list of Top Movies <em>about</em> Thanksgiving to be made, but there is a solid list of Eight Great Movies <em>for</em> Thanksgiving.  These are films that embody, in some way, what Thanksgiving really means.  You are free to disagree with the choices – as some <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/kschlichter/2009/11/10/semper-films-the-top-ten-marine-corps-movies/">Marines</a> recently did regarding another list – but the freedom to think for yourself is but one of many things to be thankful for.  Maybe these movies don’t all feature turkey and trimmings – though a couple of them do – but you can’t go wrong with them this Thanksgiving Day:</p>

<p><strong>1.   </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068359/"><strong>A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving</strong></a><strong>:</strong>  No, this is not a movie.  So sue me.  Anyone who grew up in the 70’s or 80’s remembers this classic cartoon version of Charlie Brown and the <em>Peanuts </em>gang’s turkey day.  But this is not just for kids.  One of the interesting things about Charles Schultz’s kid characters is how utterly mercenary and oblivious they can be, latching onto the crassest materialism and taking what they have completely for granted.  Their behavior is really awful – much like the behavior of many adults.  But leave it to good ole Charlie Brown and his quietly intelligent pal Linus to get them to focus on what’s important.  There is a reason that, even today, every kid my kids have a play date with has a DVD of this treasure on the shelf between the Dora the Explorer and the Robo-transmorphatron adventures.</p>

<p><strong>2.  </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397892/"><strong>Bolt</strong></a><strong>:</strong>  You know, Disney sure comes in for a lot of grief – some of it deserved – but this animated story of a little girl and her loyal dog is fantastic on every level.  It’s a technical marvel – the visuals are stunning.  But it’s more than that.  The ending is a powerful evocation of a family learning to appreciate what is important.  Throughout, it’s sad, funny, and stirring, plus it carries a powerful message about bravery and sacrifice.  When Bolt refuses to leave his little girl as a building burns around them, all I could think of is how great it was to finally see a movie that honors courage without turning it into some sort of ironic joke.</p>

<p><strong>3.  </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032138/"><strong>The Wizard of Oz</strong></a><strong>:</strong>  This is a Thanksgiving perennial on those non-communist Ted Turner networks.  This vivid fantasy is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and still kicks butt over just about everything that’s been released since.  You can even see its cultural impact in the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRdxXPV9GNQ"><em>Avatar</em> trailer</a>, where the grizzled Marine commander announces to his troops: “You’re not in Kansas anymore.”  There are flying monkeys, melting witches, dwarfs and/or midgets – plus a wonderful lesson about being thankful for what you have been given.   What more could you want?</p>

<p><strong>4.  </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/"><strong>The Shawshank Redemption</strong></a><strong>:</strong>  This grim prison drama is included for one reason – the scene where the clever Tim Robbins makes a deal with the guards to do a hot, dirty job for them and ends up enjoying a bucket of cold Cokes on the roof with Morgan Freeman and their pals.  That scene provides some useful perspective about the meaning and value of material goods, enjoying the fruits of one’s labors, and the importance of freedom.</p>

<p><strong>5.  </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059742/"><strong>The Sound of Music</strong></a><strong>:</strong>  Yeah, it’s a little on the sugary side.  And yeah, I have a beef with it because it gave my mother the bright idea to inflict the first name of one of the lederhosen-clad yodelers upon me.  But this is a true family film in every sense of the word – it both celebrates family and you can safely watch it with your family without having to worry that you’ll end up having to explain some manner of perversion to your five-year old.  The widower Baron von Trapp falls for the beautiful governess he hires to wrangle his Teutonic task force during the first two thirds of the film.  The last act focuses on their attempt to flee Austria after the Nazis decide to “invite” the Baron to take a commission in the German navy.  Christopher Plummer’s righteous anger as he tears down a swastika flag will thrill anyone with a love of freedom, and his composure as he faces down the young brownshirt is awesome.  The von Trapps do, of course, escape (though not necessarily to “Climb Every Mountain”) and in reality they ended up in America.  We can all be thankful that we are lucky enough to live in the place where the world’s oppressed want to be.</p>

<p><strong>7.  </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/"><strong>Blackhawk Down</strong></a><strong>:</strong>  Why list a war movie on a list of Thanksgiving films?  Because we should all be damn thankful that we have men (and women) out there like the Americans who fought it out against overwhelming odds in Mogadishu in October 1993.  The fierce loyalty those troops showed, braving incredible odds to rescue their comrades from the Somali militia hordes, should give us pause to reflect on the price of the great material and spiritual bounty our nation enjoys.  America didn’t just happen – it was earned.  Today, tens of thousands of Americans are overseas continuing to earn it this Thanksgiving.  And if you are so inclined, you might want to say “Thanks” with a donation to <a href="http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/">The Wounded Warrior Project</a>.</p>

<p><strong>8.  </strong><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093748/"><strong>Planes, Trains and Automobiles</strong></a><strong>:</strong>  The best John Hughes “adult” movie, and possibly his best movie overall.  Steve Martin is the uptight businessman trapped in a hilarious odyssey of misfortunes with John Candy’s lovable slob as he desperately tries to make it home to his family for Thanksgiving.  It’s funny.  It’s really, really funny, as literally everything that can go wrong goes astonishingly wrong.  Cars catch fire, wallets are stolen, deer are resurrected and buns are mistaken for pillows.  But beneath it all is the kind of heart missing from so much of the soulless, cookie-cutter dreck that passes for comedy today.  The ending truly sums up the spirit of Thanksgiving and highlights the kind of generosity of spirit that comes naturally to most Americans.  And there is another thing to be thankful for – the joy that John Candy brought to all of us during his far too short life.</p>
<p>This year, I’m particularly thankful to be in the USA for Thanksgiving.  Whether you are home with your loved ones, or serving our country overseas, Happy Thanksgiving.</p>

<p>J.J. Abrams is officially the Lazarus of movie directors as his all-new <em>Star Trek</em> has gone “Boldly Gone Where No <em>Star Trek</em> Movie has Gone Before.” With a cast of relative unknowns, the 42-year-old has resurrected a franchise that had been killed by insular “nerdyness” and timid imagination. The Gene Rodenberry creation didn’t so much bomb as it died slowly over a period of years. First, the 2002 movie <em>Star Trek: Nemesis</em> starring the <em>Next Generation</em> cast disappointed with a meager $43.3M domestic. Then, the final TV series <em>Enterprise</em>, which starred Scott Bakula, was not embraced by core fans or broader audiences and was canceled after four seasons, ending May 13, 2005.</p>

<p>With the ringing endorsement of tough-to-please critics, <em>Star Trek</em> hit warp speed at the box office last night with lightly-promoted preview screenings starting at 7pm. The impeccably-reviewed feature film seized an estimated $7M or so in Thursday night ticket sales. The idea may have been to get some of the hardcore Trekkies and Trekkers out of the way, clearing multiplexes for mainstream movie audiences today, and they have showed up in massive numbers.</p>

<p>With Chris Pine (<em>Bottle Shock</em>) in the legendary role of Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto (NBC’s <em>Heroes</em>) wearing the pointy ears made famous by Leonard Nimoy, <em>Star Trek</em> has soared to a history-making $26M on its official opening day according to multiple studio execs, double the previous-best opening day for any movie in the franchise. That means in the first 29 hours of general release, the re-imagined sci-fi blockbuster has delivered an estimated $33M.</p>

<p>How will the weekend play out? The Thursday night preview screenings will probably make<em> Star Trek</em> a bit less front-loaded. In fact, I’m guessing that, based on word-of-mouth and its family-friendly PG-13 rating, my sources believe that the movie could get a 5% boost on Saturday to a possible $27.3M, followed by an aggressive Mother&#8217;s Day drop of 40% on Sunday. That would mean a 4-day gross of almost $77M or so.</p>

<p>The great news for Paramount and Abrams and Pine and Quinto and the rest of the cast is that <em>Star Trek</em> will almost certainly have the best legs of any of this summer’s major tent-pole movies. Rank-and-file moviegoers are likely to discover <em>Star Trek</em> for the first time in coming weeks or, now that <em>Trek</em> is cool again, it may rekindle interest with core fans who rejected the most recent incarnations.</p>

<p>It will not be a surprise to see <em>Star Trek</em> sail past $200M. After all, 2005’s <em>Batman Begins</em> performed that way. The Christopher Nolan Batman reboot opened on a Wednesday with $15M and had banked $72.9M in 5 days. Based on that movie’s Friday-thru-Sunday of $48.7M, the first Batman movie in 8 years reached its $205M domestic total at a 4.2 multiple (4.2 X $48.7 got Nolan&#8217;s original to $205M). Anticipating a 4.2 multiple for <em>Star Trek</em> is probably overreaching, but a 3.4-3.5 multiple is possible. That would propel Abrams and company to well past $200M.</p>

<p>Competing studio execs  tell me that<em> X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em> (Fox) took a big tumble as expected. The Hugh Jackman X-Men spin-off only mustered $9.15M or so on its second Friday, but it will still likely top $27.95M for the weekend, down about 67%. Meanwhile, <em>Ghosts of Girlfriends Past</em> (Warner Bros) coaxed about $3M to start the frame, and it will likely be helped by Mother&#8217;s Day, grabbing a possible $10M, down a mere 35% from last weekend.</p>

<p><em>Obsessed</em>, the low budget sizzler from Sony Screen Gems, continues to outperform its low expectations with $2M on Friday, which pushes the Beyonce catfight flick past $50M. The thriller should finish the 3-day with about $6.25M and a spectacular $55.89M by Monday.</p>

Abrams&#8217; all-new reboot of Star Trek (Paramount), which debuted last night at 7pm at many of its 3,849 locations, may have grossed as much as $6.5M-$7.5M. Studio honchos are &#8220;locked down tight&#8221; about actual numbers, but that is in the same ballpark as Transformers (Dreamworks/Paramount), which grabbed $8.8M in its previews starting at 8pm on Monday, July 2 during the summer of 2007. (What portion of ticket sales fall into Thursday and what percentage fall into Friday will likely be an open question even after final numbers are in.)</p>

<p>Keep in mind that Paramount never changed its Star Trek marketing to promote the 7pm Thursday start, so the opening night audience was likely heavy on Trekkers or Trekkies (not sure which term is &#8220;politically correct&#8221; anymore). So this was a &#8220;soft&#8221; opening and what amounts to a night of word-of-mouth screenings. Keep in mind that Transformers premiered during the summer when kids are more available while Star Trek has made its premiere during the school year.</p>

If the movie does $20M today, the 4-day should be $63M-$65M. $22M or better should send this spectacularly-reviewed blockbuster past $70M. If the day is $25M or better, the number for the opening 4 days could start with an 8.</p>

Abrams reboot of <em>Star Trek</em> (Paramount) will win the second weekend of the Hollywood Summer Box Office season by at least a couple of light years over Fox’s fast-fading <em>X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em>, but some of the astronomical numbers I’ve seen floating around in the blogosphere are very over-heated. Make no mistake, this movie will open extraordinarily well, but it’s not going to play out as a typical front-loaded blockbuster. Moviegoers need time to shake off the disappointment of the final TV series <em>Enterprise</em> (starring Scott Bakula and canceled after four seasons) and the disastrous 2002 final film <em>Star Trek: Nemesis</em> ($43.3M domestic). It will take time for a new generation of fans to discover the magic of Gene Rodenberry’s vision of the future through Abrams’ magical lens.</p>

<p>Let’s be honest. Prior to what, by all accounts, is Abrams’ full-on Lazarus-style resurrection of Kirk, Spock and The Enterprise, <em>Star Trek</em> was dead. Worse than dead, it has been considered “uncool.” That’s what Paramount is fighting in the marketplace, and realistically, even in its peak as a movie franchise, it wasn’t a powerhouse.</p>

<p>The biggest opening weekend for a <em>Star Trek</em> movie was 1996’s <em>Star Trek: First Contact</em> with $30.7M and the top grossing title ever was <em>Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home</em> (with that ridiculous humpback whale storyline), which surpassed $109M. Consider this. Here are the top five opening days for movies in the <em>Star Trek </em>franchise.</p>

<p>When journeyman actor Robert Pine, best known for playing Sgt. Joe Getraer on the late 70’s TV hit <em>ChiPs</em>, appeared as an Akritirian Ambassador named Liria on the series <em>Star Trek Voyager</em> (the TV series with Kate Mulgrew as Captain), he could have never imagined that his son Chris would someday play Captain Kirk, but the 28-year-old is now in the <em>Trek</em>’s most pivotal role. He was excellent in a little movie called <em>Bottle Shock</em> last year, but aside from that, and roles in <em>The Princess Diaries 2</em> and <em>Smokin’ Aces</em>, he is basically an unknown.</p>

<p>In fact, the new <em>Star Trek</em> is filled with actors who are more-or-less unknown. Simon Pegg, the brilliant UK star of <em>Shaun of the Dead</em> and <em>Hot Fuzz</em> and cast as the colorful Scotty here, is probably the biggest name in the cast along with John Cho from the <em>Harold &amp; Kumar</em> movies, playing Sulu. But these are all talented actors who will wear well as the franchise turns into a steady hit machine for Paramount. Fans of NBC&#8217;s <em>Heroes</em> already know Zachary Quinto who gets to don Spock’s pointy ears and Chekov is being portrayed by one of my favorite young actors, 20-year-old Anton Yelchin, who was heartbreaking in the gritty <em>Alpha Dog</em> and showed a lighter touch in <em>Charlie Bartlett</em>. Trekkers are also likely to take to the sexy Zoe Saldana (<em>Drumline, Guess Who?</em>) who steps into Nichelle Nichols’ shoes as Uhura and will appear in James Cameron’s long-awaited <em>Avatar</em> at the end of the year.</p>

<p>The appropriate movie to look to for box office guidance is 2005’s <em>Batman Begins</em>. Great filmmaker (Christopher Nolan), spectacular reviews, but the franchise was dead and uncool after 1997’s ridiculous <em>Batman &amp; Robin</em>. The reboot 8 years later opened on a Wednesday with $15M and had banked $72.9M in 5 days (the Friday-thru-Sunday was $48.7M). That lays the groundwork for an accurate prediction for <em>Star Trek</em>.</p>

<p>My bet is on a possible $65M for 4 days. With Thursday preview screenings starting at 7pm, <em>Star Trek</em> could snag as much as $8M on Thursday night (the Trekkers will be out in full force). Then Friday could be something in the $20.5M range with a slight uptick of 5% on Saturday to a possible $21.6M followed by a standard 30% Sunday drop to about $15M.</p>

<p>Once audiences realize that <em>Star Trek</em> is light year better than previous movies in the franchise (and last weekend’s <em>Wolverine</em>), the picture will play and play and play. I think that, of all of the major studio releases this summer, <em>Star Trek</em> may have the “longest legs.” If the movie opens within 5% of my number or bigger, the multiple (the number by which you multiply the opening weekend in order to arrive at the final domestic gross) could be 3.4-3.5, which would push J.J. Abrams reinvented Rodenberry opus to something in the $220M-$230M range.</p>

<p>I am anticipating a steep drop of 65%-70% for<em> X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em>, and producer/star Hugh Jackman will be forced to settle for a second weekend of $27M-$30M. That would still be a nifty 10-day gross of $130M or so.</p>

<p>Finally, <em>Next Day Air</em> (Summit), a low budget, R-rated urban comedy starring Donald Faison (<em>Scrubs</em>), Mike Epps (<em>Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins</em>), Wood Harris (<em>The Wire</em>) and Mos Def (<em>Cadillac Records</em>), will open in the shadow of the retooled U.S.S. Enterprise and is unlikely to wrap up the weekend with any more than $6M.</p>

<p>The<em> X-Men</em> spin-off, which has been made for substantially less than the $210M budget ponied up for to produce 2006’s <em>X-Men: The Last Stand</em>, becomes the all-time fourth-best first-weekend-of-May opening, trailing only <em>Spider-Man 3</em> ($151.1M), the original 2002 <em>Spider-Man</em> ($114.8M) and last May’s <em>Iron Man</em> ($98.6M). <em>Wolverine</em> has also posted one of the top seven opening days ever for a comic book adaptation.</p>

<p>Jackman himself is getting lots of positive feedback on his <a href="http://twitter.com/RealHughJackman" target="_blank">personal Twitter page</a>, but there is some real negative feedback in the Twitterverse. So, it appears that fans are as tepid about this movie as film critics. <em>X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em> will likely be very front-loaded both for the weekend and the long haul. I’m guessing that the weekend could play out like this. <em>Wolverine</em> did $5M Thursday at midnight and has added another $29.75M Friday (for a $34.75M opening day). Then Saturday, the movie may drop 9% to $31.6M or so, followed by a Sunday dip of 36% to just over $20M.</p>

<p>After speaking with a number of competing studios, the consensus is that <em>Wolverine</em> will have a multiple of less than two. (The multiple is the number by which you multiply the opening weekend to arrive at the ultimate domestic gross.) With a multiple in the 1.8-1.9 range, the summer’s first movie spectacle will finish at $156-$165M. That’s a good, but not great number. Meanwhile, <em>Star Trek</em> (Paramount) has a chance to be this year’s <em>Iron Man</em>, an early May release that plays deep into the summer at a high multiple in the 3.2-3.3 range.</p>

<p>The other wide release in the marketplace this weekend is the poorly-reviewed <em>Ghosts of Girlfriends Past</em> (Warner Bros). With Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner as the romantic leads and an assist from Oscar winner Michael Douglas, <em>Ghosts</em> has performed decently, especially with Females 25 Plus. The Mark Waters-directed rom-com coaxed an estimated $6M in opening day sales and will likely reach about $16.5M for the weekend. That’s would be 12% stronger than last year’s first-weekend-of-May chick-flick counter programming, <em>Made of Honor</em>, which finished second to <em>Iron Man</em> with $14.7M.</p>

<p>Last weekend&#8217;s box office champ <em>Obsessed</em> (Sony) &#8211; the one where Beyonce &#8220;tromps a tramp&#8221; (played by Ali Larter from <em>Heroes</em>) &#8211; took a nosedive with just $4.2M or so on Friday. It seems headed for an estimated 3-day of $12.39M, down 57% from its opening, but the genre pic with a budget of only $20M will still have $47M in the bank by Monday. That&#8217;s a very profitable little movie.</p>

<p>The Warner Bros comedy <em>17 Again</em>, starring tween dream Zac Efron, continues to perform well with about $2.22M to start the weekend and a possible $6.62M for the frame. Zac&#8217;s high-concept comedy will have topped $48.7M domestic in its first 17 days of release.</p>

<p>Disney&#8217;s <em>Earth</em>, a 90-minute version of the BBC&#8217;s 11-hour 2006 miniseries <em>Planet Earth</em>, will round out the top five for the first official weekend of summer. The nature doc grabbed $1.45M on its second Friday and is targeting $5.81M and a new 12-day cume of $23.47M by Monday.</p>

<p>The other wide release is the 3-D pic <em>Battle For Terra</em> (Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions). It is on just over 1,100 screens, but has managed only about $300,000 on opening day. I did see a commercial for <em>Terra</em> during <em>American Idol</em> this week, so there was some money spent, but it couldn&#8217;t have been much. Despite respectable reviews, this cg animated flick is destined for no more than $1M. That&#8217;s a full-on disaster.</p>

<p>It’s pretty clear that, with no cost-containment on budget (especially the big cast), the <em>X-Men</em> franchise had reached the point of diminishing returns. So, <em>X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em> (Fox), debuting Friday, is a sequel, but, technically, a spin-off, without costing as much as a true sequel would.</p>

<p>I’m guessing that Hugh Jackman is working for a great price, also serving as a producer with a healthy backend participation. The rest of the name cast is essentially limited to Liev Schrieber (<em>The Manchurian Candidate, The Omen</em>), Dominic Monaghan (<em>The Lord of the Rings Trilogy</em>, ABC’s <em>Lost</em>) and Ryan Reynolds (<em>Blade: Trinity, The Amityville Horror</em>), and there is no Bryan Singer (<em>X-Men, X-2</em>) or Brett Ratner (<em>X-Men 3</em>) to direct. Instead, Fox and Jackman settled on the much less expensive, but still Academy Award-winning director Gavin Hood (<em>Tsotsi</em>). Now with a scaled-back story and cast, the movie comes in at a much more studio-friendly price while, hopefully, still packing an <em>X-Men</em>-style box office punch.</p>

<p>Fox has smartly positioned <em>Wolverine</em> as the first movie into the summer fray, and that is important because this is the one May huge release that may not have long legs (I believe that J.J. Abrams’ <em>Star Trek</em> will squash it like a bug on the all-new Enterprise windshield next week). I am told that pre-release industry tracking is in the stratosphere for this <em>X-Men</em> spin-off – Un-Aided Awareness, Total Awareness, Definite Interest and First Choice are all through the roof. When the tracking data gets this heated, predictions are dicey at best, but I am calling for $92M domestic. That would be just a tick lower than last year’s first-weekend-of-May starter <em>Iron Man</em>, which was $98.6M.</p>

<p>For those of you who may be reading my column for the first time, that $92M figure is my “prediction.” That means that based on my experience, conversations with sources at competing studios and interpretation of pre-release industry tracking, I am making a well-educated guess as to how <em>X-Men Origins: Wolverine</em> will deliver in opening weekend US sales. (The road is littered with other well-educated guessers, and I have missed substantially on a few predictions in the past.)</p>
<p>When I start writing on Friday, it will be based on early ticket sales. That will make my numbers “projections” instead of “predictions.” My Early Friday and 3-Day “projections” are historically off by no more than 5%-8%.</p>
<p>For the record, I believe that Mr. Jackman and the folks at Fox will be quite happy with anything north of $80M, but they are definitely working to keep expectations lower. In the end, I think they’ll be in the $90M-$95M range for 3-days.</p>

<p>Ultimately, <em>Iron Man</em> performed like a monster deep into the summer. It was followed by the box office misfire <em>Speed Racer</em> on the following Friday, giving the Jon Favreau-directed comic book adaptation basically 17 days alone in the marketplace. <em>Wolverine</em> doesn’t have that luxury with the aforementioned <em>Star Trek</em>, arriving next Thursday starting at 7pm.</p>
<p>Additionally, Iron Man was jet-powered by spectacular reviews (<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/iron_man/" target="_blank">93% Fresh</a> on Rotten Tomatoes)<br />
and excellent word-of-mouth. It’ll be more of a mixed bag for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, standing at <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wolverine/" target="_blank">41% Fresh</a> on RT as of Wednesday night. The multiplier for <em>Iron Man</em> was 3.22 (the number by which you multiply the opening weekend figure by to arrive at the ultimate domestic gross). <em>Wolverine</em> is more likely to finish with a multiplier of 1.8-1.9. If the picture hits my opening weekend number, that multiplier will put the final US total at something in the $165M-$175M range.</p>

<p>In addition to my final weekend prediction, I also believe that <em>Wolverine</em> may scratch and claw its way to one of the top five or six opening days ever for a comic book movie. That could make it the 2nd-biggest opening day ever for a film from the <em>X-Men</em> franchise, trailing only the first day for <em>X-Men 3</em>.</p>

<p>There is always room for an inspired piece of counter-programming, and Warner Bros is apparently executing just that. The Matthew McConaughey-Jennifer Garner-Michael Douglas rom-com <em>Ghosts of Girlfriends Past</em> could reach a very solid $18M by appealing to Females 25 Plus.</p>

<p>The only other wide release is <em>Battle For Terra</em> (Lionsgate/Roadside Atttractions), a sci-fi 3-D release unluckily sandwiched between <em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em> (Dreamworks/Paramount) and Pixar’s <em>Up</em> (Disney) on the 3-D release schedule. Despite essentially decent early reviews (<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10009859-terra/" target="_blank">70% Fresh</a> on Rotten Tomatoes), <em>Terra</em> will not be putting up much of a <em>Battle</em>. The 3-D screen count will be low, and there has been no real marketing money spent on getting this one launched. I’m predicting about $3.4M, which might be enough to “sneak it” into the top twelve for the frame.</p>

<p>The problem with the Oscars is that voters are nominating films that relatively few people have seen. The five movies nominated for Best Picture this week – <em>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, The Reader</em> and <em>Frost/Nixon</em> – have combined to gross just $186.7M. The Dark Knight passed that box office total early in its fifth day of release. <span id="more-28397"></span></p>

<p>How many average moviegoers and potential Oscar viewers have “skin in the game?” Based on the current average US ticket price ($7.15), only about 26 million Americans have seen Hollywood’s big five so far.</p>

<p>Yes, I think <em>The Dark Knight</em> should be a Best Picture nominee. It is absolutely one of my five favorite movies of 2008, and I believe it to be a masterpiece. Artistic excellence and blockbuster status are not mutually exclusive. I believe that one of the reasons Christopher Nolan’s comic book sequel soared past $500M US is that it struck a very real cultural chord with audiences.</p>
<p>There was talk that this comic book adaptation was too dark, but it is actually a relentlessly optimistic movie. What Heath Ledger’s Joker character demonstrates is that, even when the world is in shambles and people are faced with impossibly difficult choices, they do the right thing. The message of <em>TDK</em> is that regular people, at their core, are good. We need more movies like that right now.</p>

<p>I also believe that Clint Eastwood’s <em>Gran Torino</em>, although not a perfect movie, should not have been snubbed entirely. No Best Actor for Eastwood&#8217;s turn as the irascible Walt Kowalski, and not even a Best Original Song nomination for co-writing the heartfelt theme song with his son Kyle and jazz vocalist Jamie Cullum. <em>Gran Torino</em>, by the way, with a to-date cume of $79.8M, has grossed more than all of the Best Picture nominees except <em>Benjamin Button</em>.</p>
<p>Other snubs that will depress the viewing audience include Best Original Song contenders, Bruce Springsteen (<em>The Wrestler</em>), Miley Cyrus (<em>Bolt</em>), Beyonce (<em>Cadillac Records</em>) and Alicia Keyes (<em>Quantum of Solace</em>). I have yet to get a good answer about why the Academy narrowed the category to just three nominees. If Bruce Springsteen is big enough for the halftime show at Super Bowl 43, he must be big enough for Hollywood’s biggest night, and if there were the usual five nominations here, Springsteen would have certainly been among them.</p>
<p>A disastrously low 31.76M viewers watched last year’s Oscar show for an all-time worst 18.6 Nielsen rating. Last year’s Best Picture nominees combined to gross $357.9M. This year, the five nominees will be lucky to combine for more than $300M domestic. How much lower can the TV ratings get?</p>
<p>There is a growing divide between what Academy voters view as film excellence and what audiences actually want to see. That’s not to say that all Best Picture nominees should be blockbusters, but they should include some true, crowd-pleasing hits. If you look at this list, it’s pretty clear where the Oscars came off the rails.</p>

<p>In 1997, there were three $100M grossing movies including Titanic ($600.7M cume). Over the next seven awards cycles, there were at least two $100M grossers in each Best Picture field, and in 2000 there were four hits of that magnitude.</p>

<p>The disconnect between the Oscars and rank-and-file movie fans started in 2005. This is where the Academy Awards &#8220;came off the rails.&#8221; Only 38.9M viewers watched that telecast, and the Academy has continued marching to the beat of that noncommercial drummer ever since. In the final analysis, 17 of the last 20 Best Picture nominees (including the just announced group) have failed to break the $100M threshold. Unless the Academy figures out a way to give more rank-and-file moviegoers “skin in the game,” the ratings slide will continue. My hunch is that the 2009 Oscar telecast will be the lowest rated in history.</p>

<p>Bad weather with several major storms, including one in the Northeast, are making this a challenging weekend to project. I have revised my the 3-day estimates I released last night to allow for films to enjoy slightly stronger Saturdays, but the general story is the same. Jim Carrey and <em>Yes Man</em> (Warner Bros) at #1, Will Smith and <em>Seven Pounds</em> (Sony) at #2 and <em>Tale of Despereaux</em> (Universal) at #3.</p>
<p>My major analysis piece <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/smason/2008/12/20/estimates/" target="_blank">I published Friday night still stands</a> with the headlines being that Warner Bros now seems destined to cinch the all-time best one year domestic sales figure in studio history and Will Smith’s streak of consecutive $100M grossing movies will almost certainly end at 8 with his Gabriele Muccino-directed drama.</p>
<p>One major change is that <em>Slumdog Millionaire</em> (Fox Searchlight) hasn’t expanded nearly as well as I originally projected. The almost certain Best Picture nominee increased to 589 locations this weekend and the result will be a likely 8th-place finish with about $2.94M and a PTA of $4,999 or so.</p>

<p>On the specialty front, Mickey Rourke is a box office attraction again. The one-time movie star was at his peak in the 1980’s with movie like <em>Diner</em> ($14M cume), <em>The Pope of Greenwich Village</em> ($6.8M cume), <em>9 1/2 Weeks</em> ($6.7M cume) and <em>Angel Heart</em> ($17.1M cume) is riding the crest of an enormous comeback wave. His role in Darren Aronofsky’s <em>The Wrestler</em> (Fox Searchlight) has already earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Drama and Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead and a SAG Award nomination for Best Male Actor, and now the film has scored a huge opening weekend Per Theatre Average.</p>
<p><em>The Wrestler</em> opened on Wednesday at 4 locations managing an outstanding $11,732 PTA. The extraordinarily well-reviewed movie is headed for a 3-day of $210,900, which will translate to an estimated $53,438 per location. That marks the second-best PTA of the year, trailing only the $60,236 debut of <em>Frost/Nixon</em> (Universal) two weeks ago.</p>
<p>At #2 on the weekend PTA scoreboard is Clint Eastwood’s <em>Gran Torino</em> (Warner Bros), which is a bit of a disappointment registering an average of approximately $23,400 at each of its 19 playdates. As Eastwood has admitted, this may be his final on-screen performance, but when the Hollywood Foreign Press ignored him in its annual Golden Globe nominations and then the SAG Awards bypassed the screen legend as well in the Best Male Actor category, it likely damaged the movie’s ability to compete on a limited basis with other pictures with stronger awards resumes.</p>
<p>In my Friday Night Estimates story, I wrote that <a href="http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/smason/2008/12/20/estimates/" target="_blank">Gran Torino may be able to bank $5.4M</a> by the end of the year. Even with an expansion to 70 locations on Christmas Day, the softer-than-expected Friday probably means that Clint’s “swan song” is more likely to be at $3.1M or so at the end of business of December 31. Regardless, I am still projecting that Warner Bros will likely break the all-time one-year record for domestic sales for a studio.</p>
<p>John Patrick Shanley’s <em>Doubt</em>, a film adaptation of his Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning play, will bank about $703,000 or so this weekend at 39 locations for a PTA of just over $18,000. That compares favorably to recent movies like <em>Rachel Getting Married</em> (Sony Classics), which managed $16,500 per screen in its first expansion (27 playdates) and <em>Frost/Nixon</em>, which generated just over $16,000 per screen in week #2 (39 playdates). With Golden Globe and SAG Awards nominations for Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis, Doubt should continue to play well through the awards season.</p>
<p>Weinstein has elected to hold expansion for <em>The Reader</em> until Christmas Day, so the picture remains on 4 screens and appears headed for about $114,000 by Monday, down about 35% from its opening weekend at the same locations. That would give Stephen Daldry’s Oscar contender the fourth-best weekend PTA at a possible $14,240.</p>
<p>Ron Howard’s amazing <em>Frost/Nixon</em> picked up just 2 new locations this weekend as Universal prepares for a major Christmas Day expansion. Powered by SAG Awards nominations this week for Best Ensemble and Best Male Actor: Frank Langella, the film will add about $361,000 this weekend, down about 42%. That equates to an $8,805 PTA, #5 for the frame.</p>
