Sarah Silverman, Obama’s Great Jewish ‘Schlepper,’ Tweets from ‘Palestinian Territories’

by Joel B. Pollak

Sarah Silverman, who helped Barack Obama campaign for the Jewish vote in 2008, has changed her Twitter location to “Palestinian territories,” in a possible attempt to reach out across the Jewish-Arab divide–or, just as likely, in an effort to tweak pro-Israel sensibilities.

Silverman certainly catches her share of flak from the anti-Israel left; she was recently criticized simply because a pro-Israel group happened to buy a bloc of tickets to one of her shows.

But to the extent that she is trying to strike a critical pose–as she did in a recent tweet lampooning Newt Gingrich’s staunch pro-Israel views–there is no better illustration of why Obama risks losing pro-Israel support in the 2012 election.

On the one hand, Obama is attempting to claim he has not just been pro-Israel, but more pro-Israel than any president in American history.

On the other, his penchant for confrontation with the Israeli government, and the anti-Israel passions of his core left-wing supporters, tend to undermine his pitch. Democrats are trying to redefine what it means to be pro-Israel–and it’s not quite working.

Silverman’s posture is an example of that contradiction–not because it’s axiomatically “anti-Israel” to be pro-Palestinian, but because those on the pro-Israel side who support a two-state solution have become increasingly aware that their empathy is not reciprocated. It is hard to imagine a Palestinian actor provocatively setting her location to “State of Israel,” for example.

In 2008, Silverman led “The Great Schlep,” an effort to bring pro-Obama Jews to Florida to convince their allegedly racist grandparents to give the black candidate their swing-state vote. Part of that effort included reassuring Jews about Obama’s support for Israel: “Barack Obama’s foreign policy is much more stabilizing than John McCain’s, and much better for Israel,” Silverman claimed.

It’s harder to make that case today, when Obama–and, now, Silverman–seem to be at pains to show solidarity with the Palestinian cause (and when the Middle East is more unstable today than in 2008). (more…)

Patch Adams and Code Pink ‘Moon’ AIPAC Crowds

by Dave Reaboi

How precious. It’s been several years now since I lived in San Francisco; forget about their irrational and childish politics– it’s almost possible to forget how thoroughly insane so-called ‘peace’ activists are.

From Philip Klein at the Washington Examiner we get a bizarre video clip from the proceedings of Move Over AIPAC– a production of the Israel-hating hags at Code Pink and several pro-jihad groups. What makes this particular event different from many of the Bay Area craziness I saw firsthand (cataloged brilliantly by the indefatigable Zombie at Zombietime) is the participation of two professors with intellectual pretensions, Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, authors of The Israel Lobby. That book claims that US foreign policy is manipulated in Israel’s favor by a shadowy and sinister group of Jews. This thesis should sound familiar to you if (a) you’re an aficionado of Tzarist anti-Semetic fiction and well-known forgeries, like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, (b) are a subscriber to any number of Arab newspapers, here or in the Middle East, (c) are a member of the House Progressive Caucus, or (d) attended with any regularly the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

From Klein at The Examiner:

The event, called Move Over AIPAC, features a faux brick wall to simulate the humilating checkpoints endured by Palestinians, and has a schedule that includes “nonviolence training,” “outdoor learning circles,” and a “justice festival.”

Below, you can watch video I shot of clown Patch Adams leading a rendition of the “underwear song” as seven people gather in what he calls the “world’s largest underwear.” When you’re watching, keep in mind two things. One, that I was compassionate enough to our readers to clip the earlier part of the video, in which Adams and several other protesters “mooned for peace.”

I’m certainly glad for one thing: that Helen Thomas– a scheduled keynote speaker at Move Over AIPAC– did not participate in the “mooning for peace.”

My Secret Life as a Conservative Republican

by John T. Simpson

I’m tired of hiding it. Everybody knows anyway. So it’s time to come clean, just like the Klan hoods I’ve got spinning in the dryer as we speak. It’s time for the Neanderthal knuckle-dragging, open mouth-breathing, racist, sexist, Klan and Timothy McVeigh-loving Montana militia member gun nut conservative Republican religious zealot in me to be set free. Repression is a bitch, and so am I.

I go to bed full of hate and wake up the same.  I hate blacks, Hispanics, gays, women, abortion doctors, liberals, Lefties, Democrats, you name ‘em, I hate ‘em if they’re not like me. I especially hate President Obama for being black. Just ask Janeane Garofalo, although being a Stalinist Socialist doesn’t help Obama’s cause any with me. Fact is, Obama could be a GOP Michael Steele Uncle Tom, and I’d still hate him even more than liberals hate Steele. Skin color trumps all. Thank God I was born the right color, or I’d probably kill myself. Wait, the hoods are dry! Be right back. (more…)
