Name this movie: An ace CIA operative, condemned as a rogue and now hunted by the Company, bashes and crashes his way through colorful foreign settings, pursued by heavily armed hit men, while back at Langley headquarters an inscrutable deputy director and one of his top lieutenants are arousing the...

Since this an open thread. I found a paper that discusses the cherry picked data that created the famous 'hockey stick' graph that the global warming crowd keeps point to to show that we are all doomed:
http://motorcitytimes.com/mct/the-sordid-tale-of-...
I had a boss that would wave that thing around every time the topic of global warming came up. Funny, he doesn't anymore (well he is gone and I am in his place) but even on the phone or the occasional lunch the hockeystick graph never comes up and global warming period rarely comes up.
I thought the debate was over, what happened?
Oh, we got trouble right here in River City and it starts with "O" and it rhymes with go….. Great movie, The Music Man.
I find it absolutely fitting that Robert Preston be on the open thread today. The similarities between Obama and Preston's flim flam artist in the Music Man are irresistable.
Wait until we have perfectly normal stretch of hot days in July or August and the global warming crowd (your former boss) will start the 'get used to this because were all doomed' nonsense.
That's funny! I didn't know who that actor was.
The Flim Flam ObaMan
Beat me to it, perfect!

Oddly, I liked him best in The Last Starfighter, pure escapist camp sci-fi at it's best. The thing about Mr. Preston, was he didn't come across as a bad man, a conman sure, but one that you couldn't help but like, and one that,
'
in the end,..
would do the right thing because he just couldn't hurt anybody.
How could you not like him?
.
The Music Man as Obama? How apt.
They both use The Think Method. With similar results.
.
Oh, man – you beat me to the punch of "Starfighter." I STILL love that film. On the "making of" featurette, they talked about wanted to get Preston and said something to the effect of "The Music Man in outer space." Which if you look at the two characters, is pretty accurate.
He was awesome and perfect in The Last Starfighter. He was a perfect ham in Music Man, his broad style and presence just overwhelmed the screen and the viewer, and like Marian, you had to fall under his spell.
I can wait the 10 years. Nice and cool here in Los Angeles this morning after a relatively mild summer (just a few 100+ days).
Great score, too. Craig Safan.
Except Preston had rhythm.
Loved Robert Preston in S.O.B., where he had some of the movie's best lines, but also as McQueen's dad in Junior Bonner and in the WWII flick Wake Island.
"Greetings, Starfighter…"
Bye. Gotta go watch a DVD…
Just saw this at The Conservative Underground and wanted to share.
Top 10 Reasons why Obama couldn't get the Olympics in Chicago:
10. Dead people can't vote at IOC meetings
9. Obama distracted by 25 min meeting with Gen. McChrystal,
8. Who cares if Obama couldn't talk the IOC into Chicago? He'll be able to talk Iran out of nukes.
7. The impediment is Israel still building settlements.
6. Obviously no president would have been able to accomplish it.
5. We've been quite clear and said all along that we didn't want the Olympics.
4. This isn't about the number of Olympics "lost", it's about the number of Olympics "saved" or "created".
3. Clearly not enough wise Latina judges on the committee.
2. Because the IOC is racist.
1. It's George Bush's fault.
Michigan has been (weather wise) picture perfect. I'm not sure but I think we had only a few days in the 90's over the summer.
We investigated the American Police Force, they are a scam
http://mywhitehouse.org/2009/10/04/american-polic...
Also please leave a comment thanking Parabear for his investigative work.
Ha! Too funny. I would add number 11:
11. This is not the IOC I used to know.
One of my very favorite bits from The Simpsons' "Golden Age" was the "Music Man"-inspired monorail salesman.
There are many parallels to Harold Hill and Zerobama; however, I would argue that Harold Hill had something good at his core that was brought out by Marian….the prez has nothing at the core. It's rotten.
I also loved Robert Preston in Victor/Victoria…another lovable "con man" role…
4. This isn't about the number of Olympics "lost", it's about the number of Olympics "saved" or "created".
very clever I'll give you that one…. R
Next place for President Harold Hill to work his magic – Iran:
He'd better do his research. Especially about Ahmadinejad's secret Jewish past:

Robert Preston was a real professional; smart, funny, self-deprecating and versatile. When his film career dried up he headed for Broadway and hit the jackpot when he auditioned for "The Music Man." Meredith Willson had tried just about every leading man he could find to play Harold Hill and was despairing of ever finding the right guy. Preston showed up, grabbed the part by the throat and made it his own. Matthew Broderick, a genuine Broadway talent, was good enough in the revival but didn't come close to Preston's effortless charm, energy and self-confidence. He was also perfect as the boozy doctor in Blake Edward's underrated "S.O.B." Just a great performer.
Did anyone else notice that when Daley started his pitch to the IOC, the first card out of his hand was the Race card? The whole thing was so absurd – no acknowledgement of the Olympians or their hard work and dedicated goals, just a clear picture of what how the games are important to the Obamas. I feel sorry for those in Chicago who thought that bringing home the Olympics was the answer to their problems…hopefully they're now seeing that they've been spared yet another huge public debt and another layer of Chicagoland Corruption.
Great pic – great film – is that a sportcoat or a tux?? wow!
Ah, Michael Moores new movie (I will not debase the word "documentary" by using it in this context), has flopped.
I blame capitalism.
Why was my comment not posted?
Between 'The Music Man' and 'The Last Starfighter,' I've grown up absolutely adoring Robert Preston. He always brought a smile to my face. Great actor, very likeable. I wish we had more of those types around today.
oh brother – get this from the Chicago Sun-Times:
"Some Chicago officials say anti-American resentment likely played a role in Chicago's Olympic bid dying in the first round Friday.
President Obama could not undo in one year the resentment against America that President Bush and others built up for years, they said."
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/olympics/1804170,C...
I'm still waiting for someone to tell me when the climate was "ideal" and what constitutes the "right" temps. When you tell the environ-wacko's there weren't any redwood trees in N. California 10,000 years ago, just ice/snow, they'll tell you that's just right wing propaganda.
I am so looking forward to 2012! Obama has proven himself a blundering idiot and even the other "news" agencies are starting to criticize him. He's only been in office for how long and look at all the mistakes he's made!
Well, not to belabor the parallel, but Marian as a Liberal Leftist is "the sadder but wiser girl" who's been victimized by men. That she would fall for a con artist is just self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course she imagines something good in his core, but that doesn't mean it's there.
All we're allowed to see is that they're happy they've found a co-dependent relationship together.
Oh, feh. Now I've ruined the damn movie for myself, beyond any further enjoyment!
I think they will say the climate is 'ideal' when we are all sustenance farming and walking everywhere…
http://www.sacgardens.org/
Check out his role in My Father's House with Cliff Robertson. And how started out in Beau Geste.
Being such a great gay in VV- to bad he never got a // part in the Best Man or Advice/Consent.
The American people can pull an IOC or Honduras on him.
Or we could play Survivor on him
…"Hussein Obama, the tribe has spoken, you have been voted out"
Time to leave
/Hahahaha
How prophetic, tho relatively easy to predict as ConservativeMomBot below has given us the article
stating just that, " Its all Bush's fault." Most of the other top 10 items have a ring of truth if not outright
true. Dems are so easy to read if you pay attention, I guess a major portion of the electorate has an attention
problem.

How about this for a t-shirt:
"WELCOME TO CHICAGO
I SEE DEAD PEOPLE!
AND THEY'RE VOTING!"
Just a thought..
Just drink a little joy juice, the enjoyment will come back!
ROFL. …beans, no frank, huh?
Whattaya expect from any rag that has the word Times in its name?
I actually saw Rowdy Gaines (Chicago point guy, apparently a former Olympic swimmer and gold medal winner, uh, ok) say on ESPN word to the effect "Well I hope politics DIDN'T play a role (in Chicago's defeat) I'd hate to think that the last EIGHT YEARS affected the voting (they got 18 votes, pathetic) so he WAS blaming BUSH!
did it go to moderation? some times the filter chews up comments. watch the *buzz* words like Jew for example(which has been *de-buzzed*) and such.
and it's ALWAYS for "DEMOCRAT" all the time…
The Day By Day cartoon today will have a link to a breast cancer "Boobie-Thon" with items for bid etc. The Muir prints are ummmmmm hugely deserving of a peek
but the actual art work may not show up here so be sure to find the link.
Sorry, pop-up said connection had timed out.
Love Robert Preston . . . "The Music Man" & all his other roles.
Re: the reference above to the "think method" . . . wow — just like "Hope & Change" and "Yes, We Can" and all the other vacant charms & spells that were cast over the people of our land.
Funny, though, the people who fall for his lines generally are from sophisticated cities, not real-town America.
You think the hockey stick was a scam you ought to check out what the IPCC really is.
A committee of politicians, activists, and bureaucrats who go through hundreds of scientific studies. They cherry pick what fits their political agenda, they even take snippets from studies that refute global warming, by only grabbing portions. Then they put it all together so it spins like a top, release it, and expect every one to buy it because they're from the UN.
I thought he was great in Victor/Victoria.
Lady after his manly ways "I can't believe you're gay! Why I bet the right women could turn you around."
Preston "I was thinking the same thing for you Madam."
If find it funny as hell, to be honest. The left actually thought the world hates America because of George Bush. They really believed it.
They hate America because where other nations have failed time and time again, the US succeeds. We prove their assumptions and processes and procedures, and traditions, are abject failures every day. And pisses them off to no end.
There's a reason people are proud to hate the NY Yankees. And it ain't because they don't like pin stripes.
Yep, just like every crook in Cook County jail is really innocent. Honest. Just ask them, they'll tell you.
NFL update, looks like the Giants are going to be 4 – 0.
Please say a prayer for the Jets against the Saints, they're both 3 – 0. It's not easy being a Jets fan.

Thats all we need for a Sunday. A nice raft of fresh bullsh&t
All of my comments get lonely just sitting around waiting for "moderation" that never comes. So now they've started hijacking yours. They aren't BAD comments; they just want some company.
You didn't write the word "an@lysis", by any chance? That's a huge no-no around here, in more ways than just the one.
The IPCC is as corrupt as they come.
Robert Preston anecdote:
A family friend served with Preston during World War II and said Preston was famous for his late-night liaisons with the local ladies. He'd crawl in the window after lights out many a night.
Our friend howled to see Preston play an old queen in Victor/Victoria…talk about casting against type!
Some scientists expect sun spots which are dormant right now to pick up near 2012 to 2014. When this happens, the earth might continue with its natural warming cycle that it has been experiencing since about 1680.
During the last iterations of a 1,500 year cycle (and there are others of varying lengths) both the Southwest and California were deserts – probably why the Anastasias Indians had to abandon their cliff dwellings on Mesa Verde in Colorado.
We could save ourselves a lot of cap and tax hurt by preparing the public with the truth of what is likely sometime between now and the next 400 years.
What we and the world need is desalination science and technologies, not to make Emperor’s Gore, Strong and Soros rich.

I agree that we need science, not politics. Right now the 'global warming' crowd is literally cherry picking data to fit their agenda.
The long term problem is that the environmental movement is hurting our economy and, long term, will slow real scientific research.
The Music Man. I can't put into words how much I really, really hate this movie.
.
Further to the parallel, he woos a spinster elitist librarian single mother who earns her living off of the legacy of an old coot who left her a bunch of scandalous books, while she is dreamily awaiting a Knight in shining armor to rescue her.
Man, this stuff just writes itself. . .
.
Not looking too good for them right now, but it's not over yet!! Sanchez has been great so far! The kid's got a future!
Heh. It is one of the more cloying of the classic musicals. When it's on, I dvr it pretty much just for the opening and "Ya Got Trouble," which is still one of the best musical numbers, EVAH! Speaking of musicals…I just dove into the new Wizard of Oz blu-ray. I though the restoration for the last dvd release was gorgeous, but they've really outdone themselves. It's absolutely crystal clear and stunning, and comes with a ton of new extras and a 6-hour doc on MGM.
Don't forget the biggest reason of all. The IOC didn't owe anyone in chicago any favors.
yea, how does that work anyway?
Frankin in Minn may have an idea. Just a guess.
This is wonderful, Robert Preston was a joy in The Music Man. I was Amaryllis in our community theatre back in my day (heh heh) My mom was so proud of me when I was twelve!! The Last Starfighter was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid and I thought Finnegan Begin Again was excellent.
Speaking of the Music Man, Harold Hill trying to lead the band in handcuffs was classic!!
I always thought the character of Amaryllis needed a stern talking-to because of how she treated Winthrop. She obviously liked him, and she knew he was ashamed of his lisp…so she laughs when he lisps around her name. Not a very nice thing to do to someone you supposedly like.
Maybe as the story went on Harold married Marian and gave Amaryllis that talking-to. I dunno.
Shirley Jones and now Robert Preston. Two Hollywood class acts to counter-act what's out there now.
I'd tell you but I've applied (disguised as a leftist college student) for a $17 Billion tax $$$$$ research grant to *investigate* the reasons that happens. And, as a ~person of science~, I MUST pay myself extremely well, spend lavishly, fly 1st class, ride in limos and dine and hotel 5stars, so I can "simulate the actual enviroment of the study subject" the modern day professional politician. After all, like all tax money, it's FREE, right?
On a more serious note– the media has its marching orders to blame the U.S.O.C., saying its members are TOO ARROGANT. Unbelievable!
Apparently the theme of "It's All About the Obamas" was the thematic message of Michelle Obama's speech to the IOC. Paraphrasing: "I want my children to be able to step out their front door and go to the Olympics…. Even though my father was sick, he worked hard… blah, blah, blah…." It wasn't well received.
"mockumentary"
eh . . . How you say? . . . BS? . . . to Chicago officials . . .
It may be free, James, but it's also a sacrifice for these politicians…. Just ask Michelle Obama about her 'sacrificial' trip to Europe, courtesy of the US taxpayers. I was moved to tears over her 'sacrifice'.
It looks like the USOC will take the heat for the failed bid in Copenhagen (according to the leftwing media). Does anyone really believe that, had Chicago won the bid, they would've been given the credit??
ya *free* in the parlance of a Democrat. A reduction of an increase of tax funding is a "cut" and tax money is produced when unicorns eat plastic Easter basket grass and poop $50 bills. That's what a Democrat imagines when they consider the source of tax money, not the confiscation of your hard earned salary. I'm so ~glad~ Michelle sacrificed to fly "Taxpayer Airlines" in super luxury surroundings to help the garner Chicago 18 lousy votes and immediate ELIMINATION from consideration. I wonder how many tax $$$$ per VOTE that works out to?
so…(deep breath), ya I *admire* Michelle's sacrifice.
…and how she gushed when introducing him – I actually need to go back and watch this again, because there was one line that fell Flat with the crowd.
Is she expecting? She looked really 'odd' crossing the stage, and then headed out for their anniversary dinner in something like a tent dress.
I don't understand the comparison to Jackie Kennedy – I was a little girl then, and grew up playing with Jackie Kennedy paper dolls. I well remember how we loved her – and we believed she loved us, just like her own kids. She knew When to talk, and what (or what not) to say. Sometimes deference is a lovely thing in a woman. Most of the time, now that I think of it
It's an unexpected spin – I figured they'd go for the "he's better off without it, considering all he's juggling on his plate" plan (stupid mixed metaphor intended =)…or that it was just a cover to meet with military on AF1
Don't forget to vote yourself a raise also James.
HAHAHAHAHA – they tested it with "some Chicago Officials", but they got Burris to take the bait and claim it – from Big Gov:
Senator Rowland Burris of Illinois, the Senator who was appointed to fill President Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat, blames George Bush for Chicago not getting the Olympics in 2016. Burris stated in an interview, shortly after the announcement, that the image of the U. S. has been so tarnished in the last 8 years that, even Barack Obama making an unprecedented pitch for the games could not overcome the hatred the world has for us as a result of George Bush.
What a smile can do…the man was plain talented and intelligent.
I loved him in SOB and The Last Starfighter.
Glad to here it. I can't wait to see the restored Wizard of Oz.
I wouldn't debase that word either.
A Marine colonel on his way home from work at the Pentagon came to a dead halt in traffic and thought to himself, "Wow, this traffic seems worse than usual. Nothing's even moving."
He notices a police officer walking back and forth between the lines of cars so he rolls down his window and asks, "Excuse me, Officer, what's the hold up?"
The Officer replies, "Mr. Obama is just so depressed about his rejection in Copenhagen that he stopped his motorcade in the middle of the highway and he's threatening to douse himself in gasoline and set himself on fire. He says the country hates him and he doesn’t have the $2.5 million to repay Chicago’s taxpayers for the humiliating trip. I'm walking round taking up a collection for him."
"Oh really? How much have you collected so far?"
"So far only about three hundred gallons but I've got a lot of folks still siphoning."
A young Black honor student is beaten to death on video in Chicago and Obama has no outrage. Chicago's Olympic bid to the I.O.C.has been denied,Maybe now he can be outraged.Despicable.
There was another one like this about 10 years ago. I think someone was collecting for Bill and Hillary's defense fund, and they had about 5 gallons. (5 gallons by the way is more than enough…) Just can't find that original.
Well you know dead people and their entitlement mentality. Always thinking they're owed something from the living. Forcing a living person to buy their coffin. Having someone attend to their every need. Whining about how this country was built from the sweat of dead people. Et cetera.
That's why they always vote democrat…the mooches.
It's time they started carrying their own weight…
I will, because …darn it, I’m good enough, I’m schmart enough, and dog-gone it, the government people and dead and fictious voters like me!
ah, they're just lazy. Voting takes it alll out of them for years! or until the next election that benefits perpeptual government power or a labor union, then they ~find the energy~ to get OUT and vote.
I bet Chicago looks like "Land of Living Dead" on election days…that would make a funny short film, zombies getting off aa ACORN school bus to vote, moss and stuff hanging off them, in burial shrouds, all generations of dead people, like from the 1800's and early 1900's.
I think you may be on to something here. Perhaps we should call the NEA and SAG to see if they can't give us a hand.
They seem to have no problems with helping out in political arenas….
Heh – I did MM also in community theater. I was sixteen, but because I looked young and was short I was cast as one of the little kids (let's not talk about what I had to do to my chest every night). I still can't hear "76 Trombones" without getting hives, but love "Iowa Stubborn", "Rock Island" and, of course, "Trouble."
Funny stuff!
I'd imagine most adjectives you could inject to describe a MMoore film would get your comment thrown out by the site moderator.
Here's a dialogue sample "Hello…(cough) are you—agh, ugh—re gister ed to vote? Wanna sigh, I mean sign up? Sup port Obama… ergh…"
(spoken like "Jim" from "Taxi") and then a worm crawls out the undead ACORN employee's eyeball socket…
