my wife and i (btw, we're white- it matters later in the story, trust me) were having dinner at the home of some friends (he's of Chinese descent and she came from Vietnam when she was 4) and she's telling about going thru the checkout at the local supermarket with her son, who was about 2 at the time. the cashier asked if she had a "WIC card"? (for those who don't know, WIC stands for Women, Infants & Children- it's another welfare program.) she has no idea what that means and he explains it to her, helpfully adding that he could give her an application form. she was basically shocked into silence, tersely tells him 'no thanks' and leaves.

I can only imagine. I don't imagine people who lived in California, Oregon, or Washington would recognize their states governments or the behavior of a lot the people living there now. I live in northern Michigan and while we would be considered backward by California standards but our property and lives are safe; and for the most part the local governments leave us alone.
