Eva Marie Saint.
She didn't make very many pictures, but at least three of them were classic: "On the Waterfront", "North By Northwest", "Exodus".
A Jersey girl.
Cardinals clinched a spot in the playoffs after beating the Rockies in Denver last night. Hooray!! I love to see a Cardinal/Yankee World Series. Go Cards.
On a somewhat related topic, I quit watching baseball shortly after Curt Flood sued for free agency. I can't argue with the legal principle, but it kind of ruined the game. For me, anyway. Wasn't he a Cardinal?
Don't forget Superman Returns
Baseball schmaceball- strikes, steroids, imports, egos, criminal enterprises etc… It's football season-ha ha
The Yanks are working it on their end — 1 more win to clinch the division and best record in the AL. Personally, I'd like to see the Dodgers, but I wouldn't mind the Bombers beating the Cards!
"Exodus" never gets old. She was excellent in the other two films, but "Exodus" should be shown in every classroom to show the truth (fictionalized, using three dimenstional characters the students can care about). then see if they buy into the current propagandists take on the Israeli-Palestine conflict.
In addition to it being Open Thread Sunday … it's #Jesus Sunday at Tweeter … at least for some of us! @OutreachNuMedia on Twitter.
Old Tom: Yes, he was a Cardinal. One Hell of an outfielder. He did not want to go to the Phillies(in those days, who did!!) so he sued because he thought he had the right to his own career. I don't disagree with that philosophy. Let's be real here, before free agency, players were treated like chattel.
Jasontheradiogod: I know you're semi-joking but your point is made. College and the NFL is ripe with performance drugs yet it's treated with kid gloves. Why is that? Egos? Lord have mercy!! Some football players are the most egotistical people on the planet this side of actors in Hollywood. I enjoy football but I think the whole football thing is getting too big for their britches.
Bennett: Cardinals are a distance second to the Yankees with 11 World Series wins. I think the Yanks have 26. I'm old school and I would hope someday that MLB reduces the regular season schedule back to 154 games and that the World Series ends by Oct.10 every year and that at least ONE day game is played.
Started watching old movies as I am so sick of the Hollywood preachy leftists. Also the movies they are making now SUCK. Last few days I have watched Treasure Of The Sierra Madre, On The Beach and Lawrence Of Arabia. They just don't make them like that now. And the acting is far superior to the numnuts in Hollywood now.
Amen, Harley. I would rather watch an Ed Wood Marathon than one flick from Oliver Stoned. Come to think of it, who would be able to tell the difference?
Well, Ed Wood did have more talent…

Agree 100% on 154-game schedule and daytime WS games!
Besides the expansion Diamondbacks and Marlins, the Cards (BTW, 10, not 11 WS wins) are the only team with a head-to-head advantage vs. the Yankees in the World Series. The Cardinals won in '26, '42 and '64 — the Yanks beat them in '43.
Since I have been blessed with a big red icon, I have the privilege of being spotted easier and read more frequently than a message posted by a “non-red” member. Therefore I would like to use my unfair advantage to express a political view that I feel is important.
Please Support the US Military. They risk their lives every day for Our Freedom!
Harley, "On the Beach' was made by a preachy leftist.
Eva Marie Saint is truly wonderful. Got a chance to speak with her in person a few years back. They don't make em like that anymore — and theyh made precious fw of 'em back then.
Tom. Way to go. I grew up thinking of baseball as something more than a "sport" it was the American pasttime. I will always think of Bob Gibson V. Denny McClain in the World Series when I think of the Cardinals.
The players went on strike in 1994 and the World Series was cancelled. Cancelling the World Series? I quit watching baseball after that. I could care less now. The steroid cheating freaks who stole all the home run records only reinforced my disinterest.
Hard to tell if its patriotism or patronizing.
At IMDB website
On today's movie stars: "America is now obsessed by stars in an unhealthy way. They don't actually deserve this kind of attention. They`re only actors – not scientists who are triumphing over cancer or doing some other wonderful thing."
I am moderately annoyed that the headlines have been:
"Award winning Filmmaker Roman Polanski has been arrested"
and not
"The child rapist Roman Polanski has been arrested. Finally."
For the record is your ddaichiro name meant to imply you are an D-Day hero?
Any Given Sunday is still a pretty damn good movie.
But I want to forget Superman Returns
Either way, it's freakin' awesome. But there's a long way to go, and he likely won't get time for the rape (I hate to say it, but the HBO doc did point up a lot of misconduct by the original prosecution, most of whom are long dead), but a few months of discomfort for the fleeing the country rap…priceless.
Wow…looks like William Safire just passed away.
His novel "Freedom" is a somewhat pedestrian novel but it is chock full of fascinating historical research. It focuses on Lincoln's Presidency from his election to the issuance of The Emancipation Proclamation. It contains very little about the Civil War battles but much about the coalition cabinet politics and Lincoln's political genius in holding the cabinet and Federal war effort together. I would bet a lot that Doris Kearns Goodwin read it as part of her research on her masterpiece "A Team of Rivals – The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln." William Safire's devotion to using The King's English properly will be sadly missed. We need someone to pick up his torch and carry on that effort.
I also enjoyed Eva Marie Saint's films. She is not difficult to look at either.
No. My initials are DD and I just love my country.
It's weird that they got this voting system that identifies dissenters as though they have the plague and it does seem to attract one's eye when scrolling through a list of posts.
If those damn scientists want some attention, they better come up with those jetpacks and flying cars!!
They'll never be able to fix the mess they've made of the all-time record book, but going forward, the game seems to have turned the corner on the steroid issue — stolen bases are up and home runs are down this year.
Hey, I'm being very real…like I said, I can't argue with the legal principle. But before free agency you had teams; now you have a collection of grossly overpaid individuals who will hop from the Dodgers to the Giants at the drop of a hat, if somebody tosses them a couple more bucks. If they aren't loyal to me ("the fan"), why should I be loyal to them?
As to their being treated like chattel, nobody was ever forced to play the game against his will.

I grew up with Walter Alston's Dodgers: Koufax and Drysdale. Picture Don Drysdale pitching in the All-Star game and quitting and calling it a "draw" because his arm got tired…
While we're on the subject we could also talk about the 'designated hitter'. Or about Sosa using a corked bat, lying that he didn't know he had it, and getting away with a seven game suspension. They owe Pete Rose an apology.
I loved the game once upon a time, but they've ruined it. Too much money and too little personal integrity.
Well, sleazebag Roman Polanski, for sure. But as I recall the charge was statutory, for having consensual sex with a minor. I'm not saying it was OK, but there is a difference…
This day in 1938 – bandleader Glenn Miller does his first recording session in NYC for RCA's Bluebird record label.
Same day, same place – bandleader Artie Shaw records his eerie theme song, NIGHTMARE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W59FzOwYIs
This day – 9/27/1942 – bandleader Glenn Miller plays his last civilian band gig at the Central Theater in Passaic, NJ, a portion of which was broadcast by the Coca Cola company live that evening. No film footage and, surprisingly, no photographs have surfaced. Next stop for Miller – service in WW2 in the AAF.
A commenter over at the site said this——-
"This video should be sent to the IOC so they can see what they will be subjecting the Olympic Games attendees to should they choose Chicago for 2016!!!"
Another commenter added this—————
"Arnie Duncan presided over this abortion of a school system and now the genious Obama has him presiding over the entire nation's schools."
**Two very good observations and a lot of Food for Thought!
Sadly, that film would probably never be made by today's Hollywood.
You must have missed the part where he drugged her drink, and raped her anally while she was begging him to stop. Well, either that or you have the same concept of "consensual sex" U.N. peacekeepers have.
LOTS of guys have used corked bats — only one got caught betting on baseball and lying about.
Nobody owes Pete Rose anything.

Dale Rathke, 'ACORN bigwig' and brother of Wade, the founder of ACORN, embezzled $948,607 from the company to spend on such things as Gucci, Neiman Marcus, limos in New York, a $2000 stay at the Waldorf-Astoria and a $700 'gourmet dinner at La Cote Basque'. This happened in 2000 – and all of the money was paid back. Which is interesting since Rathke only makes $46,000 a year. (BTW, Dale was also head of the 'financial arm' of ACORN.)

"Capitalism: A Love Story" is a truly lazy piece of filmmaking. From the title you would expect a thesis of some sort or other. All that he does is deal with a bunch of injustices and claim that the entire capitalist system is responsible for truly. Truly inane. You don't have to be an ardent capitalist to knock over this house of cards. Because the businesses he cites have behaved horribly doesn't in any way shape or form negate capitalism itself.
Moore is a weak-kneeded populist. Capra in a basseball cap, without a quarter of Capra's talent. Over and over again he returns to the fact that when he was a kid his and everybody else's family in Flint worked for GM and life was perfect. The things changed. GM started to produce lousey cars expecting that people would buy new ones every couple of years as they always had. Instead they bought better made cars from Japan, that lasted longer. But that's just one story.
How and why we've come to this economic crisis is complex and multifacted story that I doubt any film could adequately summarize. Moore doesn't even come close to dealing with it.
Interestingly for all his leftist accoutrements Moore never mentions Marx and Engels. Afraid of being called a commie? Or maybe just not intellectually equipped to deal with their critique. And you don't have adopt a Marxist position to read or utilize Marx in order to criticize capitalism. Paul Krugman does it every day — and he's a capitalist.
A gifted actor and yes, underrated. She is an icon. "On the Waterfront" is one of my top favorite movies.
I don't think it can be–the Godfather novel came out in 1969, Polanski did his deed in 1977.
Not to mention a 162 game season…and then playoffs?
And Kobe Bryant!

The Democratic party took control of Congress in '06 and initiated a three year 40% increase in the minimum wage. Is there any reporting anywhere that makes the connection?
It's called voting.
From the petition: "…any party suspected of corrupt activities be immediately suspended". Now that would never backfire, would it?
Only here brother only here.
They are now reporting, you may already know, because he is a French citizen
that throws a wench er..sorry a wrench into the process. Something to do with french
law agreements with the USofA.
You must have missed the part where the child's parents accepted an out of court cash settlement from Polanski.
This whole thing was disgusting filth from the start. But I believe the legal charge was statutory. Correct me if I'm wrong on that point.
And the Angels are still the only team with a winning record against the Yankees.
I think the producer in the Godfather was based on Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia.
Thank you, I heard the writer or director had someone in mind when it was written.
Apparently it was not unheard of to have very young starlets visit and be taken advantage
of by those in power.
I think DD deserves his red badge of progressive cowardice. When they need guards at the re education camps I am certain that you will forget all about your red badge of warning.
I think there were plenty of people who worshiped actors and actresses in an unhealthy manor way back when as well
"Let the punishment fit the crime" — you said Sosa should get a lifetime ban for using a corked bat. Sosa got a multi-game suspension — the usual penalty for using a corked bat — or for a pitcher scuffing, cutting or putting a foreign substance on the ball.
If you knew anything about baseball history, you'd know that there's a very good reason that betting on baseball (for or against your team — doesn't matter) carries the "death penalty" — gambling almost destroyed the game.
Re-education camps. Wow. I wonder when we will start seeing people lynched with the words LIB scrawled on their chest.
Which .500 went to the World Series? The '73 Mets had the worst record for a pennant winner: 82-79.

I heard rumored somewhere, or is the practice so prevalent it could have been anyone
or no one is that perverse? That may be somewhat naively phrased.
P.S. Eva Maria Saint very underrated actress.
I Guess I was, unknowingly, going under the assumption he was well known
for this particular indescretion. Hey, what do I know, I just found out it was
generally known Gary Grant was bisexual. I still think of him as one of the
all time greats but it is disappointing, not particular surprising but still disappointing.
Not that there is anything wrong that.
The '81 Royals went to the playoffs with a 50-53 record. The season was shortened due to a player strike.
But my use of the .500 threshhold was intended as hyperbole. If you knew anything about effective writing you'd understand that.
OK, that was a little snarky. But really… "If I knew anything about baseball history"?
Oh yeah…I hate the playoffs. Just an artificial device to keep more mediocre teams "in it" to stimulate fan interest. Finish the season at .500 and you too can go to the Series.
"LOTS of guys have used corked bats…"
Well, there's an effective argument. Makes me want to run out and buy a season ticket. Lots of guys use steroids, too. It must be OK.
As to Pete Rose, let the punishment fit the crime. Nobody even alleged that he ever threw a game. He bet on OTHER TEAMS, because he had a gambling problem. Do I think that was OK? No. Do I think it deserved a ban for life and exclusion from the Hall of Fame? No.
Treasure of the Sierra Madre brings back memories of an excellent movie. Reminds me not of wall street nor capitalism but of Otard and Peeelosi and their mutual lust for political power. Or reminds me of the deranged progressives and their unhinged fits of envy and jealousy.
I never said "everybody does it.." I pointed out that players have been caught doctoring bats (and balls), and that the disciplinary precedent is that they receive multi-game suspensions — NOT the "immediate ban for life, with no appeal" that you suggested for Sosa.
No, Rose didn't beat against team, but he knowingly violated the no-betting-on-baseball rule, punishable by a lifetime ban. Suppose a manager got in over his head with bookies and ran up a tab that he couldn't possibly pay. The bookies could threaten to report him to MLB (resulting in a lifetime ban) or have their "associates" make — and carry out — threats of a more direct nature. It's only a short step from that stituation to "you can get right with us if you lie down against the Mets on Sunday."
That's why betting on baseball is prohibited.
Are you referring to the "Black Sox"?
They threw the World Series; that was a little different than "gambling".
As to your corked bat argument – it's called "cheating". Your defense is basically that "everyone does it". Is that how you teach your kids morality? As far as I know, Charlie Hustle never cheated a game in his life. Also, he didn't bet on his team. How is betting on the Cards vs. the Giants equivalent to participation in the black sox scandal?
You are correct about the precedent for using a corked bat. I guess what ticked me off about Sosa was the obvious lie. Tiger Woods can tell a weight difference of the equivalence of a single cotton ball between his drivers, just by swinging one. But a major league ballplayer of Sosa's caliber can't tell a four-ounce weight difference in his own custom made bat? Right, Sammy. Pull the other one.
As to Pete Rose, although what you describe is a very real danger, in his case it amounts to "prior restraint". I do not believe the decision was just.
Again, "it don't make it right," but Sosa wasn't the first one to lie when he got caught. When Graig Nettles (one of my favorites) broke his bat and six superballs popped out on to the field, he claimed a mysterious fan had given him the bat before the game.
Re: Pete, we'll just have to disagree. He'll never work in baseball again, but he might have kept alive some slim hope for the Hall of Fame (which is not controlled by MLB), if he had owned up right away. Given his stature in the game, the voting writers might have cut him some slack (although not for a long time) if not for the denials.
BTW, I think the current steroid policy is still too lenient — there should be a "one and done" rule (I think it's currently 50 games, a full season, then a lifetime ban for each successive positive test). That would make it a total of two things that will get you banned from baseball — using steroids and betting on the game.
