North by Northwest might be my favorite Hitchcock film (the Blu-Ray which comes out in November will probably melt my TV!). I also enjoyed Notorious, His Girl Friday, and Charade.
In college, we watched Bringing Up Baby and, sadly, I did not like it at all – a little too broad for my tastes. However, a couple years ago I watched Arsenic and Old Lace and afterwards I thought, "Now that's more like it!"
Let's see… that last movie I watched was John Frankenheimer's The Train with Burt Lancaster. What a cool movie! It's considered one of the last great black and white action films. Interestingly enough, all the train crashes are real – no rear projection or models. And Burt Lancaster did all his own stunts (the limp was real too).
I had a conversation with a Chinese acquaintance about China. Anticipating that I would criticize the "one-child policy," he began explaining why he does not mind China's government despite its authoritarian nature: You can't eat freedom (indeed, he likens it to chaos), democracies such as America do not guarantee basic needs such as food and shelter, and if a government cannot or will not provide those things, what good is it? Political freedom, he asserted, only works in America because America is rich and powerful and doesn't have a population on the scale of China's. (He also mentions that Americans are 5% of the population, but use 60% of the world's resources, and that India — the other billion-person country — is doing well only because of good relations with America. To be fair, though, he has nothing against America or Americans.)
You can see similar arguments made with respect to healthcare: what good is being able to choose your provider if you can't afford it?
How do you answer reasoning like this?

This photo and your comment brings up a college memory. When I was in college (graduated 25 years ago), a buddy of mine was a pretty talented impersonator. He would change his answering phone greeting to a different voice every week or two. His best was Jimmy Stewart, but he also did a pretty convincing Cary Grant, John Wayne, and Don Rickles.
He went to a couple of open mike night's at the local comedy club and got good receptions. Alot of us tried to encourage him to move to LA. or NYC and taken a shot, but he was madly in love and wanted to get married. He decided to be responsible and become a corporate suit instead. I lost touch with him, and now I wonder if the marriage worked out and if he ever regretted not trying to take a shot at the brass ring.
He is one of those stars that you would prefer not to really know. I read long ago that he had a violent temper. Sort of cuts thru the fetching debonair persona.

On the North by Northwest making-of documentary on the DVD, someone says that he was charging people for autographs when they were on location – not tons, just a buck or so. Some thought he was donating the money to charity but the general consensus was that he was keeping it for himself!
So Obama has asked Paterson not to run for the full term next year.
I think he realizes all that racist ranting works against him.
To be fair, he hasn't done the racist ranting. His most rabid supporters are his biggest problem, as I and many others expected. (Worse than we, the enemies of his socialist dreams.)
It comes down to the basic view of the purpose of government. Those raised in Communist or Socialist societies will view the government as a provider of things. I think the purpose of government is to provide for the internal and external security of the society. That is, to do what CANNOT be done by the individual. For example, a person may not be able to protect the homeland from invasion by a foreign power, but a strong military might. However, anyone can grow corn, or rice or some grain, and hunt or fish to provide their own food. Provision of these "necessities" is not properly governmental, because it not necessarily governmental.
Now, it may be true that one cannot eat freedom, but that fails to recognize that "Freedom" does provide the incentive to develop more and more food. If all of one's "needs" are provided for, whence comes the drive to innovate or improve? And America has not always been "rich and powerful". We were once a poor, largely agrarian nation. Our wealth and power is largely to result of the freedom your friend dismisses.
My reply would be that his reasoning is bassackwards:
-FREEDOM made America "rich and powerful", not vice versa
-DEMOCRACY is not an entity external to the people and overseeing it, it IS the people and as such We The People are our own guarators and providers
-India is not particularly cozy with America but is wise enough to emulate its successes
-America doesn't use "60% of the world's resources" but simply 60% of those resources currently being used; any country wishing to enter the game may do so and get its share
-True choice in healthcare would bring costs down, making it affordable for more
"You can't eat freedom"? Tell that to the kulaks who were Stalinized.
Karl Marx got a lot of things wrong, but one thing he did get right, the seeds for every movement's demise are sown in their creation.
I've run a few blogs of my own over the years, eventually got bored with them. The lack of feedback from readers was my pet peeve. No way to tell if I was reaching people other than with hit counters. Got very few comments left.
The best advice I could offer would be, separate yourself from the pack, be different, unique. For example, when the ACORN scandal broke, every blog I read was all covering the same thing, and how many times can you read the same dozen facts over and over? There's a huge difference between breaking the news, and analyzing existing news. Most blogs seem to concentrate on analyzing existing news.
Secondly, be yourself. When I was writing, did I want to be critically, thoroughly analytical like Bill Whittle? Did I want to be provocatively overboard let Greg Gutfield? Did I want to be aloof and above it, like Charles Johnson?
What I learned was I needed to be myself, with my own opinions, and my own reasons for those opinions. Be yourself.
I would respond "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, and they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among them Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."
And "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!"

I think I agree with Rush on this subject. Publicly he's playing it cool, but I believe all of the racist attacks are coming directly from the White House in general, Axlerod and Emanuel in particular.
Obama was elected thanks to the slickest PR campaign in the history of presidential politics, and they're playing the game the same way. Its appearance, not substance they're after. I don't believe for a second, that if the president wanted it to end, he couldn't make a few phone calls to a few key players. Do you think if he asked Carter to shut the hell up, Carter wouldn't? Of course he would. The president and his henchmen are green lighting this entire game.
Remember, with these guys its about where you end up, not how you got there.

I was wondering how Bringing Up Baby missed the first list, but you might be right. As much as I enjoy "old movies" — I just LOVE the houses, the scenery, in those. Like Philadelphia story and Bringing Up Baby, just looking at the set was always fun. Arsenic and Old Lace — just to listen to was wonderful.
Cary Grant was just wonderful, no matter what. Sigh. Be still my heart.

Cary grant has a huge amount to say to men today. He was manly and respected women, was able to treat them as mature adults without being weak and new-agey. He defined style and manners for the modern age and we really have not caught up with him yet. His performances were pitch-perfect. I think this was because he is actually listening to his co-players, there's an integrity about the lines and action that most actors simply do not have. John Wayne had it (to a lesser degree) and Jimmy Stewart had it in spades. He is the personification of manly style. Just stumbled upon something "funny". In looking for some of the cases where President Obama represented ACORN, Google directed me to a site named "The Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse." Seems this is a site affiliated with Washington University in St. Louis, particularly the School of Law. Actually looks fairly comprehensive. But at the bottom of the page it states
"The Clearinghouse has been generously supported by the National Science Foundation."
National Science Foundation? What does, or should, the National Science Foundation have to do with a law school website? This strike anyone else as "interesting"?

America has endured a massive invasion of millions of illegal immigrants. The southern border is a bleeding sore. Hospitals are overwhelmed, forced to provide free medical care to illegals. School systems must absorb the unnecessary costs of educating the illegal immigrants' children. Welfare rolls are swelling with illegal immigrants taking advantage of public assistance. Nearly one-third of the federal prison population is composed of illegal immigrants. Mexican cartels import drugs, crime and human trafficking. Washington has lost control of the nation's borders — and with it, our national sovereignty.

How could anyone forget Cary Grant in "The Bishop's Wife" as Dudley the Angel. One of the best Holiday films of all time.
George Hamilton told a really funny story about how there's a group of old-time Hollywood celebs who all do Cary Grant impersonations. They used to do conference calls, and carry the entire conversation using their own versions. Of course that's nothing compared to the one he told about meeting Ava Gardner and his mom coming out of a Moroccan brothel in the middle of nowhere at 1:00 AM on a weeknight…..gotta love the old Hollywood.
Back then the studios actively cultivated their own stars to appear as refined mature adults. Nowadays we have free agents that get managed as spoiled brats. We might get some decent people, but nothing of that class.

In my humble opinion… yes and no.
Yes, because talent is talent and we all like to believe that good talent rises to the top (of course, that's not always the case).
No, because of changes in society in general.
It has nothing to do with politics. I know people talk about how the Golden Age actors lived through sometimes hellish conditions (war, the Great Depression, etc.) but today's actors can't be blamed for living through relatively peaceful and stable times. Maybe some of our troops will pursue acting after they're discharged. Maybe some kid growing up today in Detroit whose parents are out of work because of the economy will grow up and become an actor, using those childhood memories to inform his work.
And the entertainment media is much worse. If Cary Grant were alive and working today, people wouldn't be talking about his movies – they'd be talking about the "gay rumors" they heard on Access Hollywood. Sad but probably true. And people wouldn't be asking him for autographs, they'd be asking, "Are you on Twitter?!"
And the film industry today only seems to care about movies with "franchise potential" so, for the most part, the kind of movies Cary Grant did wouldn't even get made.

I had planned on offering some insight into the film career of Cary Grant, but I didn't want to write it and then have my post vanish, so I went to the beach instead.
When George Clooney became 'serious', a lot of Hollywood, well, Liberal Hollywood called him 'our Cary Grant'. Bette Midler even voiced it exactly that way at one of the many honors he's received.
George is many things, but he's no Cary Grant.
As many here probably know, Cary Grant was a patriot in the true sense. He also believed in fighting for his country and its allies by working for the American government and His Majesty's clandestine service to help win the war.
I really cannot imagine George, or for that matter any of the very popular 'beautiful people' that make up today's fanatically Liberal Hollywood doing anything like that, doing a single thing that does not serve their careers in some way or hurt those of different political slant.
It wasn't always this way. During World War II, Hollywood rose to the cause, picked up the banner and ran with it. The vast majority of performers and technicians signed up or served their country in some way.
They were truly beautiful.
Yes, Hollywood used to be filled to the brim with the real beautiful people.
And Cary was one of the best.
I think for me, North by Northwest, Gunga Din, The Awful Truth, My Favorite Wife, Bringing Up Baby rank among my favorites of his, and of movies of all time.

I am working (slowly) on my Master's in Psychology. I had to do a paper on a celebrity/famous person from a particular "approach". I chose Cary Grant – Archibald Leach according to Adler. Adler was big on choices, and Cary Grant chose to be who he was to a large extent. He had serious women issues (disregarding all homosexual rumors since they were hard to substantiate and were refuted by several) that seemed to get mostly resoved in his last marriage late in life. He was rather amazing to get where he got!
