‘Equalizer’ Star Woodward Played Exemplary Heroes
by S.T. KarnickEdward Woodward, star of the iconic 1980s U.S. TV series The Equalizer and acclaimed films such as The Wicker Man and Breaker Morant, has died at the age of 79 after a long illness.
Woodward was best known for portraying stolid, highly principled characters who stood up for the defenseless and needy. His most prominent role for U.S. viewers was certainly that of former CIA agent Robert McCall in The Equalizer.

Living a simple and seemingly joyless life in New York City, McCall helped people in trouble who answered his ambiguous newspaper classified ads offering assistance. Every week the middle-aged former CIA agent would confront powerful, villainous individuals and gangs who were menacing and exploiting people unable to defend themselves. McCall’s shadowy past and evident contempt for corrupt authorities put him in continual jeopardy from his former government masters, yet his immense personal integrity and moral rectitude always saw him through–aided greatly, of course, by his CIA training and natural ingenuity.
McCall dressed impeccably, spoke clearly, stood straight and looked people in the eye when talking to them, and displayed exemplary manners. And then he overcame the most formidable criminals.
A memorable part of the show’s formula was the employment of a personal confrontation, at the episode’s climax, between McCall and the main villain or villains. McCall would stand firmly and tell the enemy precisely what was morally wrong with what they had been doing, and tell them what the consequences were going to be, and that McCall was going to make sure they paid the price. It was always a stirring moment, as McCall’s personal integrity matched his moral standards and his stolidity and skills were there to support them.
That connection was both morally satisfying and realistic. Criminals, after all, essentially take to crime because they want a short cut to the wealth regular people accumulate over time through hard work. Thus, instead of working at things, a criminal’s habit is to use force or stealth to take what they want. And since it’s easier to prey upon the weak than on the strong, the criminal life doesn’t encourage excellence in pursuit of one’s goals.
The bourgeois mentality, on the other hand, involves working at things to earn what one wants. Hence a hero such as McCall is much more likely to be well-trained and in top form than someone who expects to prey upon weaker people. Thus the dramatic convention of the hero typically overcoming the villain accords with both reality and common sense.
Woodward’s roles in films such as The Wicker Man and Breaker Morant added nuances to the type of character he played as the protagonist of the late 1960s UK TV spy drama series Callan. In addition, he was acknowledged as a master at acting in more explicitly serious dramatic roles, and his skills as as a singer were admired by Lawrence Olivier and Noel Coward, among others, and made him a sought-after performer in stage musicals. His final movie role was in the superb comedy Hot Fuzz.
Woodward was a brilliant, talented performer who consistently chose to invest his talents in service of worthy projects. He will be remembered fondly for The Equalizer, The Wicker Man, Breaker Morant, and the rest of his admirable body of work.

I'm sorry to say I knew him only from his "Equalizer" role.
He gave my late wife and I many a pleasant evening together.
A great show, a comic book hero ala Batman, but set in real life (and without the tights). Great theme, too.

Anyone who has not viewed the movie Breaker Morant should make it the higherst priority. There is a lot going on in that film that we can relate to today. Woodward, as "the breaker" is extraordinary.
Do yourself a favor HPJr and give yourself a treat rent Breaker Morant. From the posts of yours that I've read. A guy like you will eat it up. Just a friendly suggestion. Sorry about the wife. Be Well.
"Every week the middle-aged former CIA agent would confront powerful, villainous individuals and gangs who were menacing and exploiting people unable to defend themselves. "
Since when have you repubutards ever cared about defending those unable to defend themselves? Aren't ya'll about "personal responsibility" and not relying on other people for help?
You people are confusing.
Thank you for the kind words. She was one of a kind and we loved each other until the last.
I'll rent this movie ASAP — the clip from "Breaker Morant" (embedded in the other Woodward post) was intriguing. You please be well, also. Your comments show a lot of heart, a lot of passion for the Conservative cause. I hope we turn this thing around. I fear for our great country, and for my unborn great-grandchildren.
Your wife will love it. It has the most wonderful collection of handsome blue eyed aussie men you will ever see in one place.
Edward Woodward, Himself ! Thanks for the great picture.
He was a joy to watch on the large and small screen. I wish McCall were here, today, to foil the really bad guys in the present administration, and clean out the duplicitous ,dead wood in both parties .
I hope a boxed set of 'The Equalizer' is available for purchase.
I loved the Equalizer series and would tune in every week to see how McCall used his brains more than his ex government skills to get out of difficult situations. The best episode was when the Arab Terrorists crashed a wedding to kill a rival who was marked for death since he worked for peace. Andreas Katsulas played the person they wanted to kill. McCall bided his time and waited for the right moment to strike while lulling the terrorist into thinking he was not capable of resisting them. It reminds me today to be nice and polite up until the time you have to take action, that will throw off an opponent every time.

When I was in law school, we watched "Breaker Morant" as part of our Trial Advocacy class. Our professor said that it was a terrific illustration of Chief Justice Marshall's warning, "Power is stronger than the law." That film had a profound effect on me, and Edward Woodward's performance was stunning.
Later, "The Equalizer" was my favorite TV show in the Eighties. Woodward personified what a hero should be. Rest in peace, sir.
He was a wonderful actor, he will be missed!
I remember him also as The Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott.
Ah, another Liberal who has missed the point.
We Conservatives really do care about and help those less fortunate. We do it with our own money and not with money confiscated from others. We do it on or own time and with our own efforts and don’t wait around for the government do it for us. This actually shows the benefits of personal responsibility to those who are helped.
The point is that McCall took it upon HIMSELF to help others. That's a defining principle of conservativism.
Liberals, on the other hand, express their compassion for those in need with a lot of melodrama and demagoguery, but in the end they just demand someone else do something about it. A liberal version of McCall would find out that an innocent young girl was being victimized by street gangs, and after accusing the girl of being a racist he'd blame the gun companies. He'd write a piece on HuffPo calling for a nationwide boycott of Jell-O Brand Gelatin for supporting the NRA. He'd get 30 or 40 of his buddies to camp out at the office of a local Republican politician shouting "No Blood for Jello". The TV News would report that 30,000 attended the event. Democrat senators would demand a 10% tax on all desserts with 1% of the revenue going to help victims of gang violence get free condoms. The bill would be named after the original victim, who had just turned up dead in a ditch, thanks to those evil Repubutards and their Big Jello buddies. Robert McCall would then go back to his luxury Manhattan condo with his Nobel Prize and write a best-selling book about his "ordeal".
Breaker Morant-One of the greatest movies of all time. Edward Woodwards performance was brilliant. He will be missed.
You forgot the very same liberals mentioned wouldn't pay anything if they could help it…but they sure as solar radiation would insure YOU paid it…
Woodward was also superb as the Ghost of Christmas Present in George C. Scott's A Christmas Carol for TV. My favorite scene with Woodward and Scott is the one in which Woodward introduces Scott's Scrooge to the cowering orphans Ignorance and Want. After watching the Equalizer (also a favorite at our house), one could almost imagine the scene thus:
"Mr Scrooge, these are my friends…Ignorance.. and Want…hurt them, and you will have to deal with me."
Tu quoque argument…
Who said we don't?
We just don't want to use the government to steal money, take a hefty cut out for employing simpletons to administrate a unworkable plan, and give the defenseless pennies out of every inadequate dollar…all the while avoiding paying there "share"…
God, liberals are SO stupid…
Nice UZI!
The Wicker Man is all about an upright man who suffers for his moral clarity, persecuted by the heathens around him. He refuses to back down out of his concern for a kidnapped girl, and he is even dismayed at the chaining of a bug by a child.
We will turn it around Brother. Because We Must. Enjoy the Movie. AA
USA Network's "Burn Notice" is a mix between the "A Team" and the "Equalizer" without all the corniness of the former. The main characters operate on a strong moral code of personal honor and protecting the weak from the predators. As of yet the series has not degenerated into a PC mouthpiece where all the bad guys are conservative, white male businessmen. In fact most of the bad guys are genuine thugs, mafia types and international criminals. Not a bad watch.
Areyouserious?,
Please read the posts of the first two individuals who replied to your post. You get it now? I don't think they could have been anymore clear, especially RobertB. RobertB, wonderful post by the way. You summed it up beautifully.
Does anypne else remember The Equalizer being on Sunday Night? Apparently it was on Wednesdays but I would of swore I remember Pat Sumerall saying during football games "Tonight on CBS, it's 60 Minutes, Murder She Wrote, and The Equalizer." Am I going crazy?
A few weeks ago, my wife asked me if she could buy Season 1 of THE EQUALIZER on DVD; she could get it at a discount where she worked. I never watched the show and we generally don't watch much TV, so I told her to go ahead. We have been watching a few episodes a week and enjoying ourselves. We put a disk in and watched a few episodes in memory of Mr. Woodward…who is hopefully now off "equalizing" things in a different plain of existence.
I have seen his son , Peter Woodward, speak at a local science fiction convention. Very intelligent; very charming; very informative. What a wonderful family. Mr. Woodward will be missed, but he did us all a great favor by being the father to another wonderful performer.
And THAT is my favorite version of A Christmas Carol.
and let us not forget his pivotal role as the UK police commander in the superb but horribly underrated action film
'The Final Option'. Based on the rescue of the hostages at the Iranian Embassy in London. 'Option' is a meticulously researched and highly accurate portrayal of the SAS.
Woodward is fine in an excellent cast. By the way, liberal critics HATED the film- yet another reason to see it…
That version scares me, especially the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. But I guess that's part of the point.
The Equalizer was great with the cool Stewart Copeland score. It was one of the only shows my dad and I would watch together. Woodward was great in it and I was always a fan afterwards. He will be missed.
I second what ALLAMERICAN posted. Breaker Morant is one of the best movies I ever saw, or at least one of my favorites. Regarding "The Equalizer," my late grandmother, and myself, enjoyed that as well.

LOVED that movie! LOVED Edward. Now I will have to see 'Breaker'
You can pick up the last two seasons of "Callan" on DVD, and they're well worth the investment. It's low budget drama, but it's all in the characters and dialogue. Woodward is excellent as the conflicted protagonist doing dirty jobs for a system that detests him. I only wish the earlier episodes had survived.
you will enjoy that as well…
BREAKER MORANT is great; THE WICKER MAN is fantastic and shows what a consumate actor Edwards was.
Breaker Morant is easily the best military court-martial movie ever made.

Sad news. We will miss him too.
I haven't seen "The Wicker Man," but will check it out when I get the chance.
Can't really argue with that, however, "The Caine Mutiny" is superb as well.

I completely agree with you. It also shows you the unvarnished face of war. It's moral ambiguities and venomous political expediency in action . What can you say it's a great movie. That's all.
Thank you, Janee. I'm sure she would've, although she was pretty sensitive when it came to conflict, even in movies. She died recently (November 4th), from a sudden and untreatable brain hemorrhage.
He didn't just play a hero. He was one. And he will be greatly missed.
I think that you'll enjoy it and Mr.Woodward plays a very different kind of role in it.
My wife and I were great fans, but I couldn't resist teasing her from time to time, making fun of the show. I remember I used to call the star "Eddie Woodie," and imitate him in a very bad faux British accent.
As I said, those were the days. Thanks all, for recommending Breaker Morant.
I watched my first episode of The Equilizer" because I heard the great Stewart Copeland them song from another room and came into to see what it was.
I liked the series until it turned virulently anti-gun towards the end.
RIP …..great scene: "Shoot straight you bastards and dont make a mess of it" http://aso.gov.au/titles/features/breaker-morant/...

and these older shows and older actors prove what total CRAP is on TV these days……
I remember seeing Breaker Morant when I was in high school and loving it. I recently saw it again one afternoonon on WGN when I probably should have been doing something else. But what a treat! What an extraordinarily powerful film. Woodward's performance is both bold and nuanced. His craft and his presence will be missed. Requiescat in pace.
Equalizer was one of our top favorites of the time. It was a time when acting could carry the show. It was 'cutting edge' without being trendy, and more like 1 hour movies than a TV show.
Great tribute to The Equalizer, one of my favorite shows.
The great thing about McCall was that he was a cultured, intelligent British gentleman who could kick your ass at the drop of a hat. A truly unique hero among the buff young P.I.s on TV during that time.
I loved how McCall would always be one step ahead of the bad guys, picking away at thier weak points, then bringing the hammer down on them at the end.
And most of the time his services were free. Great stuff.
Here's an interesting bit of trivia from the Internet Movie Database:
"During the height of the show's popularity, actor Edward Woodward was often approached on the street by people in need, with situations similar to those depicted in the show. He began carrying flyers with the phone numbers of social services organizations and legal clinics for them to contact."
Edward Woodward was one classy man. There are not many of his kind around anymore !
Good show. And gotta love Bruce Campbell!
I watched the Equalizer several times years ago, and I found it much more interesting and suspenseful to watch than say, Miami Vice, and better acted too. Whenever I tried to watch Miami Vice, it just left me feeling underwhelmed and cold. The Equalizer was done much better.
It's a shame Woodward is gone. He was one of the best performers of his standing.
One story about Woodward's being above and beyond the usual selfish Hollywood lout was when he had his heart attack during the second season of "TheEqualizer."
I read that he personally hand wrote over 190 thank you cards to fans who had written him get well cards.
Class act.
You people are confusing.
That's because you have no idea what "we people" actually believe… and have no real interest in learning.
One of my very favorite actors (and there are so few). So sad to read of his passing.
RobertB
Excellent comment. 5 thumbs up!
I had the distinct honor to meet this gentleman while I was a young technician in the NY Film industry during the run of The Equalizer. I will always remember those times fondly as he brought an air of professionalism to his work rarely seen since.
As Mr. Miller so perfectly exclaims; "help the helpless, not the clueless".
I always loved 'The Equalizer", but the gangbangers in those old shows were always dressed like they came out of 'The Warriors' or the 'Beat It' video. Like a bunch of pansies.
He was terrific in Breaker Morant.
I had a serious crush on him during the run of "The Equalizer" — and he was 30 years my senior. So sad to hear of his passing. A real man's man.
Love the film. Purchased the PAL version, because ,at the time, that was the only version available. Fortunately, I have a Phillips all-region DVD player so it make it possible to watch PAL as well as NTSC (sp?) versions. 'The Final Option' was amazingly prescient regarding the terrorist presence.
good for you. There are NTSC vhs floating around- and they are fetching big bucks… as said, the US film community loathed the film and it was always hard to find.
Just be careful and don't get the remake which is truly awful, it's one of those movies that is really unintentional funny that was trying to be serious. Nicholas Cage should be shot for that movie.
And I'll second (for the second time) the wraps on Breaker Morant, along with Gallipoli and The Light Horsemen it is one of the top 3 best Aussie War movies and top ten best movie over all. The funny thing all three movies are from early Australian, the Boer War and the other 2 being from WWI. We don't make many good (or average) movies now.
