‘Eleventh Hour’ Ends Season on High Note
by S.T. KarnickAs noted in my previous articles on the CBS TV mystery-drama series Eleventh Hour (here, here and here), the show consistently presents interesting, intelligent, and fair-minded discussions of science issues in a dramatic (if often far-fetched) context. In addition, the show doesn’t portray business as the catch-all villain, giving a much more balanced range of motives and miscreants.
Thursday night’s episode, “Medea,” ended the program’s first season on a high note in terms of the ideas and attitudes it expressed. FBI science consultant Jacob Hood (Rufus Sewell) investigates the case of a woman who appears to be suffering from delusions caused by schizophrenia.
Naturally, given that this is a drama, there’s a good deal more to the story than that. The woman (Melissa Sagemiller) has had an affair with a very powerful married man who wants to keep it secret. She claims to have had a baby recently, fathered by him, but he denies it, and at his instigation she is institutionalized and put on an anti-schizophrenia drug regimen.
Two interesting angles arise. One is that the powerful man tried to talk her into having an abortion, but she refused. In the course of the drama we see a powerful depiction of the natural bond between a mother and her child, and the show refuses to make any obeisance to feminist notions that if men don’t show strong attachment to the children they father, women shouldn’t either.
On the contrary, the episode makes a strong case for individual self-sacrifice for other people’s good, regardless of whether others are willing to fulfill their obligations. That certainly accords with religiously based moral codes and resonates strongly with Christian teachings in particular.
The second laudable aspect of the story is the fact that the villain is, as in some other episodes of the series, a government employee, and in fact a very powerful one. This person uses his power in government corruptly, employing it to personal ends in trying to keep his extramarital affair from being revealed.
This vivid depiction of the powerful temptation for people to abuse government power is a welcome cautionary tale noting, as many wise thinkers have pointed out over the years, that a government powerful enough to do you much good is a government powerful enough to do you much evil. And as this episode points out, governments, being run by human beings, naturally manifest all the sins to which the flesh is heir.

I watched the show again after leaving it for awhile. Well done, both the show and the review. Diverging from the drugging of the woman, which was at least one woman and one government abuser, when will they deal with the drugging of our children? Mostly, our boys. One author called it the war on boys. First, we declare boys acting like boys to be a problem. Then we create a syndrome to match it. Then we get the psychological voodoo artists to diagnose it in every boy who doesn't want to play with dolls. Then we get the press to report a huge rise in ADD and autism, particularly among boys. Then we get the spinmeisters to discover that every third boy suffers from ADD and autism. And finally, to save us all from those diseased, psychologically damaged, out-of-control boys, we (guess what) require mandatory drugging. Now the boys and the girls are exactly the same, except the boys seem to be having trouble walking, talking and forming coherent thought.

My husband loves this show. (I'll have to give it more of a chance.)
I wish that CBS posted more full length videos on their website. Eleventh Hour just has clips.
I've never seen the show, but based upon your description, this has to have been inspired by the John Edwards saga.
I've never seen the show, but based upon your description, this _has_ to have been inspired by the John Edwards saga.
TV Shack has a handful of episodes but not all of them.
Even though CBS has the strongest commitment to dramas of all the networks, I was very concerned this show might not get renewed, particularly when I saw how early the season finale was taking place. It was an excellent episode and I'm glad it will be back. It is a better show than a lot of folks realize.
I'm a fan of "The Eleventh Hour". I first noticed Rufus Sewell in "The Knight's Tale" when, it turned out, he, the villain, was a much more interesting actor than Heath Ledger (who was an excellent actor). He again played the villain in "The Illusionist" and was more interesting than Edward Norton (another excellent actor, though a little bit of an airhead). So when I saw "The Eleventh Hour" starred Sewell, I tivo'd it. I have not been disappointed. It's become one of my favorite shows.
The makeup is distracting. They put too much lipstick on Sewell, and it's the wrong color. If the producers are reading this — FIRE THE MAKEUP ARTIST! The actress, female actor, actor (whatever is the PC term of the day)
is the weak link and the recent addition of the black agent is a sap to always having to have a minority prominently in the cast, but the actor is excellent and adds exponentially to the series.
GREAT SHOW
Another very good movie with Sewell is called "Dark City" and I highly recommend it. very cool movie.

That's one way of looking at it, I guess. My take on it was that the villain was, again, the powerful white executive.
"That's one way of looking at it, I guess. My take on it was that the villain was, again, the powerful white executive"
He was FBI, I believe.
1. Unfortunately, the types of crimes committed against the victim usually are done by powerful government executives. Bill Clinton sicced the IRS on those who made trouble for him. Had Monica Lewinsky not kept the "blue dress", she'd have been in a very similar (though not as dire) situation as the victim in this show, i.e. she was already being "spun" as a "stalker".
2. In our politically correct society, we are being indoctrinated to believe blacks and gays and other "minorities" cannot commit crimes ergo this show, had the villain been black, would have never seen the light of day. When is the last time you've seen a bona fide Islamic criminal? A black murderer? An illegal who wasn't sympathetic and put upon? "The Eleventh Hour" does better than most with the cultural censorship it has to adhere to.
Solid show, Hope it is comes back.
You really really need to watch the 4/1 episode of NBC's LIFE staring Damian Lewis. A gun control referendum is motive for murder. There is a hand gun manufacturer involved in a political battle with gun control group. Now watch the thing and get surprised.
I forgot to add an important thing when I made a not to happy comment about using junk Science in the last article on this show. I really DO love this show. Do they bend some politics sometimes, yes. Are they PC, yes. But Growing up as the first TV generation kid you can overlook that stuff as BS. TV writers nowadays must have to walk a crazy line that offends their creativity or risk pissing people off and loosing advertisers. You guys and gals are great and regardless of whatever anybody tells you, TV has never been better. I fricken hate unions but would join a picket for you.
