Mainstream Media: All Bias No Thunder
by Spike SpencerPresident Barack Obama paid a surprise visit to the troops recently in Baghdad. For that I applaud him. The troops were buoyed up by a visit by their Commander and Chief. And that is a good thing. He also praised them for their service and commitment. Also a good thing. Then he went on to say that they had done a remarkable job in giving Iraq a great gift; the chance to govern themselves in a Democratic fashion. A free people now able to seek their own path thanks to the efforts of the U.S MILITARY!
Uh, come again?
President Barack Obama just praised the troops for winning the war that he voted against. The war that, up until his election, we were told we were losing and never should have been there in the first place. Am I wrong in seeing this as a inadvertent stealth justification of Pres. Bush’s Iraq policies? Doesn’t this seem like big news? Shouldn’t this be striking like a lightning bolt across the screens of every television and newspaper across the globe? So where’s the thunder?
Isn’t this the President from the party that has called our servicemen and women murderers, rapists, and torturers? Didn’t Senator John Kerry (D-MA) say that our soldiers were smashing down doors in the dark of the night terrorizing innocent Iraqi citizens? Didn’t Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) call the Iraq war a failure and that the surge didn’t work at all? Didn’t Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D-NY) recently say that her vote to go to Iraq was a mistake and she shouldn’t have made it? Didn’t Congressman Jack Murtha (D-PA) call them murderers and say that we can’t win? Didn’t President Obama call it a dumb and rash war?
So, after what the President said to our soldiers in Baghdad, um, wouldn’t that make those on the left, uh, how do I put this gently,,, WRONG!?
If this were the other way around; we would never hear the end of it. How many times during George Bush’s term did the press try to get him to say he made a mistake? They were relentless. Now that it is blatantly obvious that all the critics were wrong and their leader just stood up and more or less stated exactly that, where are the journalists? Where are the pretty bobble head TV news teleprompter readers? Where’s the outrage? Where’s the pride in a job well done? Where’s the mea culpa from the left? Where is the thunder after Obama’’s lightning bolt?
As usual, what do we hear? Crickets.
Now I’m not saying there’s an obvious bias here. No, that would just be silly right wing conspiracy talk. The sad truth is, it’s no conspiracy at all. It’s blatant, in your face, and completely tolerated by a populous that is spoon fed left wing pablum daily from every media outlet. We are watching the unraveling of what our country stands for right before our eyes and being told we are not seeing it. Our representatives voted in a huge budget-busting “stimulus” plan that is no stimulus, chock full of pork projects, and none of them even knew what was in the bill. Chris Dodd (D-CT) votes to give the CEO’s their bonuses, then tells us the next day, he didn’t. Pres. Obama subserviently bows to the leader of another country and we’re told he didn’t. All of these are proven lies with an abundance of evidence.
So again I ask… WHERE’S THE THUNDER!?
I’ve heard it said that we used to roar like lions for liberty, but now we blather like sheep for security. I think Benjamin Franklin said it best when he stated “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.’ We sit and watch as our liberties are taken away with lies and deceit from the left and we say nothing. Well, I say, enough. Take action. Speak out. Call your Senators and Congressmen. Remind them who they work for! I pray it’s not too late. I pray that we can turn this big ship around and head in the right direction. For if we can not; where else can we go?

Obama only apologizes to our enemies. You'll be old and toothless before you hear an apology to our armed forces.
Oh, and Spike: Use a different photo. At first I thought it was a picture of Steven Weber and I almost set fire to my video screen. Use one with a smile so we can tell the difference. Weber hasn't smiled since his career went on the skids.
Don't forget Sen. Harry "The war is lost" Reid! Don't forget to mention that Obama hung a large part of his campaign on the fact that he was against the war from the beginning, unlike Hillary, and promised that the troops would all be withdrawn from Iraq within 16 months after being elected.
I wonder how those who voted for him because of his assessment of the war (it's hopeless/lost/worthless, etc.) and his promises to end it feel about his new assessment?
Don't get me wrong, I think he did the right thing by dropping in and visiting the troops as well. Definitely a surprising, but classy move on his part. And I think you have a very valid point about how this will likely be ignored.
The only left wing group I see protesting Obama as much as Bush is Code Pink. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't agree with Code Pink but at least they are sticking by their anti-war message and not playing favorites.
I definitely agree there is a double standard and it doesn't surprise me because this is how the libs operate. The drive by media supports Obama so he can do no wrong and his Obamabots follow like sheep to the slaughter.
I long for the days of logic and reason in thinking………..
When the Dems were the minority, it was a bad war. Now that they're in the majority it's a noble and just war. It's more Newspeak from the novel 1984. It's what this administration is specializing in.
Obama also said this when he was running for President regarding his opinion that Iraq was not where it's at:
“We’ve got to get the job done there (in Afghanistan). And that requires us to have enough troops so that we’re not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there.”
That was his opinion of our military; air-raiding villages and killing civilians. Pathetic.
What happened to change his opinion and why hasn't he apologized to our military like he apologizes to everyone else? As you say "crickets"
To the Left, the most unforgivable thing G.W. Bush did was win the war in Iraq.
President Barack Obama just praised the troops for winning the war that he voted against. Keep in mind where he was when he said that.
He did not say that in London or Paris or anywhere else where his life was not in the hands of the Military.
Instead of bowing to the Saudi King, he sould have bowed to all of the people there in uniform.
That has become par for the course with the left. Kill a few million people in the name of communism, you're a heroic freedom fighter. Give a rug burn to anyone in the name of capitalism or protecting the middle class and you're an evil monster.
I agree. Did Weber have a career? I remember him as the dopey (how art imitates life) brother of Joe Hackett. Then a couple of small parts where I was wondering to myself if that was Brian Hackett.
And the ladies of Code Pink are lovely. Okay, that's a lie. There is one very attractive member that was on with Stewart Varney, but she was dumber than a box of rocks. From what I've seen of the rest of them, I can see why she was their talking head.
"I’ve heard it said that we used to roar like lions for liberty, but now we blather like sheep for security. Every "left-wing" blogger active from 2001 to 2008 called, they'd like their schtick back
And the MSM is already praising his decisive action in the piracy rescue. A four day ordeal that should have lasted no longer than the time it took for the navy to reach the scene. And the MSM has even defended Obama's lack of action, in advance, from any reality-check from the real world.
Wise up people. He didn't say it was a "Just" war .. he just said that they did a good thing. He doesn't believe that 6000 lives were worth giving Iraquis Freedom .. do you?
Rug burns hurt.
He's done a couple of "we're tragicomically gay" pieces, a couple of stints on "Without a Trace" and now has a permanent position as the HuffPo resident Hollywood hater of all things to the right of Obama.
Get on the Internet and trash Republicans, that's the way out-of-work actors get their names in front of lefty producers and directors. It may not be a sure fire way to revive a floundering career, but it's easy and you don't have to say anything you don't believe.
Yes. I think its a sad commentary about humanity that loss of life was necessary, but yes, I think it was worth it.
It's not easy being pink.
AP, I am so glad you qualified your statements re: rug burns. Next time I find myself getting one I'll yell "Oh capitalism!" instead of invoking the deity. Hopefully she won't think me evil!
The stop in Iraq was one gigantic photo op and nothing else. He can say whatever he wants to to our troops, but I don't believe a word of it. He has shown his true feelings by all the comments he's made about the war and his voting record speaks for itself.
Weber had more of a career than any of the Hollywood "insiders" posting on this blog. Check IMDB.
I think this country has a long history of giving up the lives of its citizens for freedom and it has not always been just for us. I believe most honest people in virtually any country we have ever helped to liberate would say they are glad we saw fit to help with the treasure and lives of American citizens. So yes, it was worth it to give freedom to the Iraguis.
Not really. His most notable stint was Brian Hackett on "Wings". I remember him vaguely on "Single White Female" as the non-descript boyfriend who got beat up by a girl. He was also on a remake of "The Shining" that I'm not sure anyone watched. Now he's a hater. Sorry to hit a sore spot in the Stephen Weber fan club.
Asking people who were there, they think it's worth it. The can see the change in the country and the people. If our troops on the ground are proud of their accomplishments, I can say it's worth it.
Careful Todd, Ben is the president of the Stephen Weber fan club. He's hard core. He even has actual discarded tissues from the set of Wings and he knows how to use them!!
I wouldn't unless you want Code Pink outside your house!
I just don't want to come home and see a car sitting under a street light with the driver racing the engine, due to my diss of Mr. Weber. He shouldn't have treated Alex so bad on the show.
Your ire at not getting an apology is your own fault. It's perfectly balanced to the trust you once put in the press to tell you the truth. Hurts doesn't it ?
Well, get over it, get mad, and figure out how to get even. Blow some dry air into the swamp, put some light on the rats hiding in the dark corners, get the truth out to the others that are just finding out that the press is a tool for whoever grabs it. Better yet, start blog for some friends and let em in on the real news.
looking at chris mathews smug face, oily hair, and it hits you ! he plans on having some serious power. this sycophancy he has learned long and well. watch it, coming to more screens near you……..
Todd, I'm not a member of the Stephen Weber fan club, (I may be a Democrat, but I much prefer the works of Clint Eastwood), but being a regular on an NBC show that lasted 7 seasons is more impressive than any of the other folks on this site. He was also on "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" a couple years ago. Yeah, the show bombed, but it was a lot more high-profile than "Alien Nation."
Would love to see higher profile Republican celebs write on here. Vincent Gallo? John Milius? Tom Selleck?
So would I. Maybe in time. Even with the jabs you get here, they'll pale in comparison of what I've red on the Kos, Democrat Underground, etc. I did like Wings. Didn't like Brian so much because he was a slacker. Kinda like the ones who voted Obama in.
I see that the drool on "Legs" Mathews chin was photoshopped out.
Todd, if it makes you feel any better I think most of the folks who post on the lefty sites are just as loony. And Andrew, I was nominated to be Sgt. at Arms for the Stephen Weber fan club, but I was not elected since I though Jack Nicholson gave a better performance as Jack Torrance.

Definitely a staged photo op.
Notice that the makeup of the crowd of adoring soldiers rallying around The One. Seriously every single black female soldier in the region must have been flown in to make for the right shade of PC backdrop.
'I’ve heard it said that we used to roar like lions for liberty, but now we blather like sheep for security. '
And the shepard of that flock is Barack Obama. There's nothing wrong with wanting security. It's just I'd rather earn mine than get it through the kindness of strangers. Now-a-days, kindness frequently comes with strings.
Which is exactly how Carter's Iranian rescue mission would have been received in the media had it not been so hopelessly bungled… If the hostage rescue had succeeded, 1980 would have been full of praise for Uncle Jimmy's "decisive action", no matter how long it took him to get around to actually deciding on it.
I love Pia Varma. She had a nice line in there about 'want.'
I can't believe code pink or ANSWER coalition didn't try to disrupt her tea party.
Pia gives me goosebumps.
Well, at least you have a sense of humor, which is highly unusual for most of the new or occasional posters on this site. Keep this up, and we may come to consider you part of the gang. Nothing wrong with a loyal opposition, it's the vicious trolls we object to. Please feel free to continue posting here, but expect us to take a couple of jabs from time to time.
He was actually in "Hamburger Hill" back in what, 90? Can't remember the year. Fairly good flick.
They just rented her out.
Oh please don't mention the Shining. I loved the book, really liked the movie, HATED the remake. I even went in with an open mind, but it was just aweful. I don't blame Weber for that one, I blame King. If you're going to remake a classic, don't go cheesy.
I used to be a fan of King, but he's really shooting blanks these days. Plus, he's suddenly become self-important. Maybe he always was, I don't know, but recently he's become quite an ass.
Sorry you didn't get the vote.
Hey now, it just so happens that I am old (well, 59 1/2- does that qualify?) and (at least partly) toothless, and I STILL don't hear him apologizing to our armed forces…
A facial rug burn would do some of them a world of good. Hell, call 'em up and I'll provide the rug.
first you have to delete every occurance of the word "left" and insert "right".
Coverage of the tea party in socal was made out to be about prop 1a. it's all about barry.
http://www.popmodal.com/video/2330/Local-News-Cov...
Indeed. I understand the proper use of plausible deniability. It would just be nice if there were also a countervaling concept of implausible credit-taking.
Helping people toward freedom is ALWAYS worth it.
Droll, me bucko, very droll.
Yeah, Spike! Funny how short memories are in Washington. Oh, but then he gets a pass…for he is African-American and this is a historical moment. Nice column…and welcome aboard, newbie. lol
====Would love to see higher profile Republican celebs write on here. Vincent Gallo? John Milius? Tom Selleck?====
Of course you would, you're all about style and not substance, which is why you're a liberal idiot [redundancy].
ttend a Tea Party on the 15th!
Mathews is a twerp and Bo is a bigger, more dangerous twerp.
Now, back to sleep.
Spike, great article, thanks, look forward to more. Several weeks ago while filling up at the gas station the "lady" next to me had a bumper sticker which read "Dissent is Patriotic." When I ask her if she still believed that, she suggested I commit an impossible sex act upon myself…I'll take that as a "no."
Ever notice that people who have "Question Authority" on their bumper stickers get shirty when you question theirs?
Expecting a fair reporting of the Obamanation from our fearless 4th estate, not likely. It’s a relationship much like Goebbell’s and Hitler, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” There’s more to the quote but you get the gist. We’re being spoon fed horse squeeze, political theater by some of the best prevaricators in Washington, (at least in their own minds) the Democrat party. The good news is more and more people are beginning to question His Majesty and the façade is dissolving, stay vigilant, hassle our representatives, and perhaps we will prevail. Carter gave us Reagan!
When I was kid we gave each other "Indian burns" on the forearm. Now I guess it's "Native American burns".
I've noticed the British press has lost their fascination with the Reader of the Free World. Perusing the Times of London and the Sun you'll find all kinds of interesting little tidbits about the foibles of the current administration. It's interesting and definitely worth a read.

MovieBob's right. As much as I agree with the content of this piece, that paragraph is right out of the Lefty playbook.
"Weber had more of a career than any of the Hollywood "insiders" posting on this blog. Check IMDB."
Excellent point!
The only Hollywood opinions that count are the ones from people who recite someone else's words for a living!

"He doesn't believe that 6000 lives were worth giving Iraquis Freedom .. do you?"
To you, 6,000 American lives are worth more than 30 million Iraqi lives. Fair enough.
I have always thought this was the secret bias that the Left wouldn't dare to say publicly. I appreciate your honesty.
Also, I (and the majority of those 6,000) strongly disagree with you.
You're missing something, Spike.
You've also probably noticed that Obama will still be using warrantless wiretaps, he won't be closing Gitmo, etc.
You people still don't get it.
The Democrats aren't 'changing their tune'.
THEY. LIED.
They told the American people and the world that George w. Bush was a warmonger, a maniac, a buffoon, a liar, etc.
They told us ANYTHING to get their power back.
They destroyed the reputation of a good man who watched 3,000 of his citizens murdered in an hour and a half, and vowed to do whatever it took to never let another attack happen on this country again.
He removed the two biggest nation-states that supported terrorism and put electoral democracies in their place, liberating over 50 million Muslims. He refused to leave them at the mercy of the roaming Islamic paramilitary death squads the MSM told us to call 'insurgents'.
And the Democrats knowingly LIED about HIM, the war, and our troops, the entire War on Terror, in order to get back where they are now: in control of Congress and the White House.
It depends on what happens over there from this point forward. If he supports the country and doesn't abandon it to the terrorists (or whatever they're calling them these days – I can't keep track), and the country continues on the track to stability and the ability to self-govern, then its worth it. If he abandons them to the heathens and barbarians (OK, terrorists and Iranians) then it would be a pointless waste.
There's your next Gitmo scandal; "A recently leaked CIA memo signed by former president Bush authorized the use of berber on inmates at the facility."
Ah, The Great Satan, thanks for the personal attack. If I'd said something like that I'd be accused of making an ad hominem attack, no?
berbergate
The same thing happened with Viet Nam. When it was LBJ's war, Kennedy et al were fine with it. When it became Nixon's war, they turned to peace mongers.
You won't hear a peep from the left or the MSM about how wrong they were on Iraq and the US Military.
Not a peep.
The modern liberal left is not interested in the least about the substance of arguments. All they care about is the style of the delivery. Substance is, like, hard, man, facts, figures, abstract thought, logic and reason. What a buzz kill.
Obama or any other big time democratic politician on the left could stand in front of a camera and a mic and say "My I Mumbo dog face to the banana patch?"* And they would be hailed as the second coming of Aristotle.
The left doesn't make any sense because they couldn't care less about making sense. They know there's a significant portion of the American electorate who don't have the attention span to comprehend anything more complicated than microwaving a Hot Pocket. But they care about style, presentation, effects, schmooze, etc.
And guess what? Their votes count just as much as any individual who's done the heavy mental lifting of actually reading the Communist Manifesto, or Dr. Thomas Sowell's excellent book on economics.
And that's why the left makes no sense to the right and the right makes no sense to the left. One side looks at a car and thinks about all the scientific, engineering, physics, manufacturing and economic expertise required to create such a marvelous and useful device. The other looks and wonders how the color will go with their new shoes.
We need new tactics.
