‘Hope: The Obama Musical’ Hits…Germany?
by Larry O'ConnorThe same country that brought us Leni Riefenstahl is now set to deliver Hope: The Obama Musical. I’m serious, they are really doing this. The musical is set to open in Frankfurt on Jan. 17th and, in all fairness, it would be wrong for me to give any kind of opinion on the quality of this show before John Nolte flies me out to Germany to see it (John? I’m waiting…hello? Is this thing on?) [Ed. Note: Absolutely! Just bring back all your receipts and, uhm, I'll get to them when I can.]
Luckily, the press office for this soon-to-be classic has assembled a slick little YouTube video highlighting all of the big moments of the show. Believe it or not, this video is meant to inspire you to buy a ticket.
Great, terrific, perfect… um… a couple things.
First of all, Does Shepard Fairey know you’ve stolen his logo for your set design? (I guess it’s ok since he stole it from someone else.)
Also, did I really just see an opening number framing America under Bush in 2008 as “Chaos”? Chaos?? Are you sure that isn’t meant as clever foreshadowing?
And how about those lyrics for “Chaos”:

In no way does HOPE show Obama as a saint, but it grants us a view behind the scenes of his cometlike rise and also tells from the personal ups and downs of a man who has worked his way up from a social worker in Chicago to the most powerful man in the world, simply by using his power of persuasion.
In a stirring and modern musical production, HOPE shows the amazing history of the development of a new societal movement to a new generation.
The HOPE production team and its performers do not take up any political stance. We do not express a political opinion in our own name. The presentation of the public opinions and feelings in the musical follows the general interpretation of the current events like they prevail in the media and the society.
As easy as it would be to slam them on this, I actually pity their lack of self awareness. Remember: this is the same nation who convinced themselves that the Third Reich was just a natural response to the Treaty of Versailles and not an atrocious attempt at world domination fueled by hateful paranoia… If they can rationalize that, they can pretend their play is not political hagiography.
I also noticed an interesting bit of casting. The roles of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin are played by the same woman (only major characters in the piece double-cast in this fashion). Is this a subtle bit of subtext from the director? Maybe the message is, “All those white women who stood in the way of Obama being President look alike to me.”
So, it appears that producers in Germany think there is a market for hip-hop hagiography. Maybe there is, for now. But, as President Obama’s policies continue to drag down the world’s economy and send mixed messages to our international partners regarding the Islamic terrorist threat, the next big Obama musical might be a lot less “Jesus Christ Superstar” and a lot more “Wicked.”

Losing World War Two- and being a chess pawn between US and USSR forces in the Fulda Gap has taken it's toll on the German Republic. Still fiercely proud- and independent- they have have embraced the cocoon of Political Correctness with a near fanatical (there's THAT word again) fervor.
And so it was with Barry at the Brandenberg Gate. As Dennis Miller said, 'there's something oddly perturbing about a man addressing tens of thousands of cheering Germans from a balcony'. They think by acting like
Obambots they can wash away their sins.

To be fair, the producer/director is one Roberto Emmanuele and the composer is one Randall Hutchins – not exactly German names. So perhaps it is unnecessary to drag the Third Reich into it. I´ll have to give it to them – one thing the Germans learned from the past is to be sceptical about saviors. They do not glorify or idealize politicians; they tend to elect unattractive boring types. Most Germans I know don´t give a damn about Obama. Which is why this musical is likely to be a commercial failure. There is also the question of anti-Americanism. Sure, they were specifically told to hate Bush (with plenty of support from the US media). But anti-Americanism existed long before Bush and it´s not going anywhere.
Wait a minute. I thought those Germans had no sense of humor?
They are also behind the times. To put it in boomer terms: The Obama campaign was "Woodstock" but the Obama administration is "Altamont".
I think they are out of their freakin minds….

Wow! I honestly thought no nation in Europe could be suckier than France. Today I stand corrected.
But in all seriousness. REALLY!?! The GERMAN'S!?! For God sakes this is a man who decided that the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall was so important that he had a speech recorded and played at the ceremony instead of coming there himself. Why doesn't he just flip them the bird while he's at it. Yet the Germans shower him with praise!

I just saw this page. Great place, with some skilled critics.
I've some good advices for you conservatives. First of all, remember to stick together, you should organize yourselves a lot better. Rate liberal videos down, and remember to rate conservative videos up. At least 20% of all young "liberals" are only on the Left, because it's expected of them. Both from society and from the entertainment industry who set the standards, ad populum.
Another thing. Avoid mainstream and regressivity in terms of music, films and books. Go underground, explore experimental music and movies from indie labels. Conservatives have a sad tendency to be 25 years behind, or cling themselves to mainstream rock trends.
From from a self-declared center-left guy who still is open to different opinions and ways of thinking. Good lock with the site man.

I have to say I am a little disappointed with some of the comments in this thread. I don’t know what the rest of you people saw in that trailer, but to me it doesn’t look like it will be half as disappointing as the real thing has turned out to be.
Thanks for the advice John, but I generally avoid the advice of people who practice hypocrisy as though it were a religion. Is working in complete "lock-step" what they taught you to do on the left? Thanks, but we on the right can make up our own minds how to operate our affairs. And furthermore, an Obama supporter giving political advice is kind of akin to a Jim Jones follower giving advice on the best Kool-Aid recipe. But all kidding aside, thanks for sharing your views with us, even though it may take me 25 years to understand them.

If they shipped this to me free (Tax payer expense), I still wouldn't watch it in it's entirety, unless it was with a critical eye upon it! Evening all. Every 50 or 60 years or so the Germans go a little funny in the head and invade Europe. Since they're are about due I'd rather have them concentrating all that nervous energy on some half assed musical then on panzers. I say let rise the curtain and let them sing and sing rather then lock and load.

All of Europe cannot let go of the sins of World War II. The aftermath of the war completely enervated them, to the point where their economies are stagnant, their people are not having children and their countries being forced to import cheap labor from the Muslim world to keep the population young enough to work (though most of the "youths" don't work at all, just burn cars).
Europe needs a muscular rebirth, a returning to its Christian roots and a rebuilding of its nations sovereignty against the statist European Union, with is only further enervating the continent.

With the "Chaos" lyrics they are paying tribute to Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" on his radio show, in which he tried to get people to sign up to be Democrats to vote for Sen. Hilary Clinton in the primaries to keep her candidacy alive vs. Obama. Maybe.

Sounds like good advice to me. Half the libs are under the age of 30 and still engage in childish "group think." I was there at one time, too. Whatever is "cool" is followed.
Example: my kids think a song is "good" because it has more popularity bars in iTunes. We aren't talking rocket science here.
The media has done such a great job of painting conservatives as 'uncool" and stuck on the "status quo" that most young libs would rather gouge their eyes out than be called 'conservative." These guys have been worked on for nearly their entire lives by the left using every tactic available including rigging what is "cool."
The bright side is that Obama was soooooo 2008. The libs are looking for their next "cool" and the Conservatives should be there to fill the void.

And I wonder what music they would have put this part of Mr. McCain's acceptance speech to:
