Steve from ‘Blue’s Clues’ Teaches Kids to Hate Sarah Palin
by Larry O'ConnorFor the uninitiated, Steve was the original host of the children’s show “Blue’s Clues.” I have sat through many repeated episodes of Steve hunting down that little puppy’s paw-print clues, and Steve’s performance and interaction with the camera made most of those sittings not only tolerable, but at times quite entertaining. Unfortunately, I just discovered that during last year’s campaign, he used his incredible talents for a piece of fact-challenged propaganda targeting Sarah Palin and done in the same style he used to educate so many of America’s children about more mundane things like counting and sharing.

Despite an alarming number of urban legends pertaining to Steve, it turns out he did NOT overdose on heroin and his arms are NOT all covered with tattoos (many thought this to be the explanation as to why he was ALWAYS seen in long-sleeves). The truth is, Steve spent a few years writing and performing alternative rock with his friend Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips. Although his music never made it really big, it did receive some pretty high praise from critics and fans.
But, clearly Steve’s great talent is working with a camera and communicating in an effective, coherent and entertaining way with children. He briefly returned to morning television with this highly entertaining video (with Drozd) about Groundhogs. I admire this video not only as a fine piece of music, but it is a wonderful way to introduce children to guitar-heavy rock music. Kids love it, parents love it, it’s a homerun.
I guess considering what we know about the majority of television stars, rock musicians and the people associated with educational programming, it is not a real surprise (or even a disappointment) to learn that Steve leans to the left politically. What did come as an enormous disappointment was to discover that he used his incredible communicative talents to gear his political message toward children. In the video posted above, which he narrates, he joins the ranks of the disingenuous liars who are downright vicious in slamming Sarah Palin and Senator McCain. And to me, what makes it unforgiveable is that it is presented in the same spirit as his loveable character from “Blue’s Clues.”
Steve, I can enjoy your talent and watch your shows and continue to contribute to your royalty checks despite your politics which border on Palin Derangement Syndrome. But, you make it very hard for me to continue doing that knowing that you are actively trying to teach my kids more than just the colors and seasons. Leave my kids out of it.

It should come as little surprise that so many artists, be they musicians, thespians, graphic artists, et al are leftists. Artistic types, and posers even more so, exhibit some sort of social dysfunction, if not outright mental illness. History is replete with artistic geniuses who were misfits.
It's important to separate their work from their opinions. I wouldn't take tonsorial tips from Vincent Van Gogh, for example.

Hey, let them attack Sarah. She's proven she can both take it and dish it right back to the wussy men and catty women who tear into her and her family. All that poisonous slander helped her get voted the second "Most Admired" woman, just short of Bill's Hill, and made her book a bestseller. That is disappointing. I've never really seen a whole Blue's Clues show, but it looks like fun. At the tender age of 44, I've come to realize (as a friend said to me the other day) you can't boycott everything. And I've stopped trying. I'm not going to let a bunch of liberal pinheads (still my favorite derogatory phrase for "them") dictate my entertainment. Plus, I vote. So, there ya go. LOL
I disliked the video for the most part, but the last part was pretty dead on, I am worried about all of those things,,,NOW! It seems that their predictions came true, unfortunately for the party they were so ardently hyping.
Did anyone notice that all the things Steve bashed Palin for his golden boy has done his first year in office and more. Appointing friends to political office, ear marking money in the stimulus bill for all the people who rounded up votes for him, he WASN"T vetted and when things get bad where is PEBO, golfing and unwilling to deal with the situation.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a Middle school teacher over the holidays. She stated that the kids today have no values and that they needed to be taught in the class room.
I had to ask her how was she going to do that, sense values are taught through religion and you have thrown religion under the bus? That was a short conversation.

By the way, I just finished reading Sarah Palin's book and I keep it on my coffee table. It is a fabulous book. What a life story and what a wonderful individual. Her depth of character makes this guy look a drop of water on a desert rock….ie, as shallow as they come. When someone comes in and says something nasty about Sarah, I ask them why they don't like her…..and they spout lie after lie……so I pull out the book, open it the section that addresses that particular lie and have them read it. One women became very upset when I repeatedly and successfully countered her lie with factual info…..she storm out of the house. Later, she called me and apologized after she went out and bought her own copy, read it and realized that Sarah Palin is "the real deal"……and she IS!

If you don't think this isn't an attempt to influence kids, you aren't taking the left seriously. Trust me I know. I used to be one. We targeted those deemed most easily convincable. And kids make up a large segment of them.

I really don't think Mr Clues was trying to aim this at children. It was just a stupid propaganda piece done in the flavor of a Dr. Suess cartoon. Like those Obama pieces done to the tune of "The Night Before Christmas".

Unfortunately, they can't leave children alone. Their plans hinge on being able to teach children their propoganda, and having children do what children do…believe without asking about the basis for what their being taught. Children are fertile ground for sowing the seeds of lies and misinformation. I'm not fond of liberal clients; they change their minds too much, and get offended if you charge them for the many times they change their minds. They often 'forget' to pay, and when you send a second bill, they call and say they are 'offended' at you think they are trying to weasel out of paying.
Steve would've have done his personal business better by aligning himself with more trustworthy clients.
I just finished Mrs. Palin's book, too. I have bookmarks all over the place so I can go back and type out excerpts (properly credited, of course) as a note on my Facebook page. There are so many issues on which I agree with Mrs. Palin, and I really identified with her at times (her friend's description of true feminism and not what "liberals" deem as feminism, for example). If I can get the hubby home from the hospital, I may have time to get this accomplished!

Agreed. The not so hidden "hidden agenda" pushing is everywhere you look. The saddest part of this is that its been there, and our awareness is just now catching up with how insideous this is. Personally I've made a commitment to respond everytime I see it by sending an email, call, letter…whatever it takes. Just calling them out, as our President Obama himself declared, right before he was called out himself. It might be a one person revolution, but I'm OK with that. My revolution has started.

Steve's performance on a simple television show was really something to watch–if you have kids, or even if you don't. He somehow made the cheesiness of every other actor talking to kids melt away. Shame he is using his talent for propaganda.

Thanks KelsG… I have to say, I truly was so disappointed when I found this. I have great admiration for his natural talent… and remember, this is less about his politics (I expect a left-tilt at this point) it is the LIES and character assassination along with the children's program style that I think were really crossing the line.
My oldest is ten. She grew up with Steve Burns. I let her go to YouTube sometimes. I can always hear what she is looking at because I am in the room when she is on the computer. If I hear something I don't like, I get over there and call a halt. She knows better, by know, than to hunt for things she shouldn't. She knows who Steve Burns is, and she could easily have searched for him on YouTube and found this. He may not be targeting kids, but, by using his familiar style in the piece, it blurs the line… and the guy has serious credibility with children. I'm disappointed that he did not have the presence of mind to say "You know, this is a little too close to home as far as the kids go."

A search on YouTube for "Steve Burns" returns a lot of objectionable stuff (other posters making fake videos) but none of them involving Sarah Palin. Even a search for "Steve Burns Palin" and "Steve Burns Vet" don't return this video. It would be really hard to make the leap from Steve Bruns to this video on YouTube.
The video itself does not make mention of the name "Steve Burns" at all – there's no credits in the video itself. A search on Google for Steve Burns and Palin returns mostly conservative blogs (this BH post being number 2) commentating on this video itself.
To me, this is just background noise. This one ain't worth the fight.

Pretty funny actually, though contrary to the headline of this post, it obviously isn't aimed at children.
Ok, as there needs to be a voice of reason, I just want to point out that his video was obviously not directed at children. First of all, children can't vote, so it would have been a waste of time and money. Second, a child in the target age group of Blue's Clues (ie 2-6) do not understand most of the words used in that video. This leads someone using logic (OMG LOGIC OH NOES!) to recognize that this was more likely directed at voters and meant to be a way to capture their attention. I can say it would have grabbed my attention had I seen it because, as the parent of a small child who watches BC, I recognize Steve's voice. I may, in fact, have been the target audience for the video. This doesn't mean it would have changed my mind, but it would have grabbed my attention.
More often than not, the real crazies are the once attributing the crazy to others.

Are you completely nuts. Values have NOTHING to do with religion. Religion is detrimental to the human race and breads hatred and intolerance. Values are taught by a family who is honest with each other, raises their children to respect others as they are respected. Teaches them there is nothing wrong with who they are and to like others for who they are. Religion teaches you to hate someone because they don't share the same sexual preference as you, or the same skin color, or read from the same mythological book as you do.

Bleeped out, sure (Was it bleeped in the original?), but I can't see a man who started a beloved children's show targeting children with that language. Kids also wouldn't understand at least half of the points he was making against Palin.
As for jumping on the "hating Palin bandwagon," this video is clearly a Pro-Obama campaign video, even if done independently. The Obama logo at the end of the vid, and the fact that it was posted to YouTube in October 2008. Why would an Obama promo be aimed at kids? THEY CAN'T VOTE.
I also am not aware how much of that video was accurate or not, but I know some of it is. Palin was a publicity stunt. Who in history was as inexperienced as Palin and became vice president? Has she even been anything but governor?
