A Nation of Star-F%*#ers: Why We Embrace ‘The People Speak’
by Larry O'ConnorIn a publicity event for the new History Channel film “The People Speak” held at UCLA last week, actor/producer Josh Brolin was charming, self-effacing, funny, and down-right likeable. And, that was the whole reason he was there. We live in a culture obsessed with celebrity and in full adoration of movie stars in particular. In short, we are a nation of Star-F%*#ers. And people like Howard Zinn know it.

Part of the discussion at Friday’s Q & A event centered on the appearance of hypocrisy by the filmmakers for using big-name stars in their film, considering the overall thesis of Zinn’s world view is that REAL history is made by the individual struggling against the elite in power. Producers Chris Moore and Brolin agreed with the criticism but lamented that the only way to get the History Channel to air this movie would be if stars were connected to it. Understandable. But, the inclusion of big name, likable Hollywood stars like Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman, Marisa Tomei and Brolin serve a greater purpose than just aiding the pitch meeting at the network.
Being a nation of Star-F%*#ers, we are inclined to sycophantically agree with whatever our idols say. Or, at the very least, we hold our tongues while in their presence for fear that contradicting them might put us out of their good graces. We are all yes-men to these stars. We let them go off on their wild tangents and incoherent rants about America so that when they are done we can ask them what it’s like to work with George Clooney, or whether you call Barbara Streisand “Mom” or “Babs” when you are visiting for the holidays.
That is why when Josh Brolin referred to the Pat Tillman tragedy in Afghanistan as “fratricide,” no one in the audience at UCLA gasped or challenged that characterization. When his co-producer, Chris Moore, relayed a conversation with a History Channel executive who allegedly said, “We’ve got five hundred hours of World War II programming while we have two hours of anti-World War II programming. So, the balance is still pretty off,” no one thought to ask him “What does being ‘anti-World War II’ even MEAN?” or, “Are YOU anti-World War II?”
This is also why our host for the event, History Professor Ellen DuBois, spent her time on stage (in front of many of her history students) gushing and giggling with Brolin and Moore, lobbing softballs in the spirit of James Lipton (she jokingly said “Welcome to ‘Inside the Actor’s Studio’” at the beginning of the Q & A portion) but then held her true opinion about Zinn’s People’s History of the United States from the audience. In a candid conversation after the event, I heard her admit that she was never really a fan of the book and that she had some real problems with it. It would have been nice for her to offer those gripes during the presentation. It could have been “a teachable moment.”
It is also why, when promoting the film, Chris Moore said on the “Today Show” about the troops in Afghanistan, “And I’m sure every person there in Afghanistan is thinking about their family back here, thinking about the holidays, and I guarantee you all of them are thinking, ‘Why am I here? What am I doing here?’” To that, co-host Meredith Vieira could only muster up this response: “Well, the point I think of the documentary is for people to think, think for themselves, and to speak out.” That’s some real hard-hitting journalism there, Meredith.
But Meredith and Prof. DuBois and the giggling 20-something UCLA students are all suffering from the same affliction. They lose all powers of critical thought when in the presence of a movie star or a movie producer who is good friends with movie stars. And that is why the event at UCLA was a sad example of superficial thought wrapped in a cloak of intellectual importance.
Andrew Breitbart was two feet from the open microphone, patiently waiting his turn to ask a question, when Professor DuBois cut short the Q & A session. It would have been nice to hear his question. I bet it would have been more interesting than, “As an actor, what was your process for this film?” or, “Could some of your movie-star friends come on my leftist radio station?”
Finally, the most revealing answer came from Mr. Moore when he was asked what criteria was used to select the actors for the film. He informed us that they used three criteria. 1) If they would serve the material well. 2) If they were prominent enough to help sell the program and attract an audience. 3) If they had shown themselves to be activists. He went on to explain that as word spread about the project, the buzz grew and it became a cool thing to be associated with. He would field calls from actors who wanted to get in and he would respond to them: Go out and DO something. Get involved, be an activist for a cause. I wonder if Patricia Heaton’s activism on behalf of the un-born qualifies? Or, Jon Voight’s activism on behalf of our Founding Father’s original vision for our country? Or the late Charlton Heston’s activism on behalf of individual gun-ownership rights? Was that the type of activism you were talking about, Mr. Moore?
That’s right. A Hollywood producer told all of us at UCLA that day that he would not cast an actor if they were merely a big name who could serve the material. No, the actor had to go out and perform political activism. Does anyone out there still doubt that Big Hollywood puts pressure on people to embrace leftist politics? Anyone? Class?

This is the reason I gave up TV years ago.
Personally, I feel the obsession with "celebrety" is an embarrassment and is an indication of how cut off from reality many people are. It's'also dangerous in that it allows people to be led like sheep. Sadly this obsession with the cult of personality framed the 08 election and gave us an ineffective and unqualified POTUS.
Does anyone know why a person's point value would suddenly go down to 1 after being a 60? I've lost my history on Big Hollywood.
Excerpt: "It is also why, when promoting the film, Chris Moore said on the “Today Show” about the troops in Afghanistan, “And I’m sure every person there in Afghanistan is thinking about their family back here, thinking about the holidays, and I guarantee you all of them are thinking, ‘Why am I here? What am I doing here?’” >>>
Why am I here….What am I doing here….questions the troops may be asking more these days under Obama's political pivoting. Assuming the media actively tries to locate troubled soldiers, I'm struck by how often I hear those who serve offer up clear reasons for being there. They seem to understand more clearly than our politicians.
Intensedeate has been acting squirrelly for a week now, your score may or may not come back. I have know others who have lost everything, including myself. Some returned, some did not, mine included. Good luck.
Is that James Brolin standing next to Josh? He's looking old………………well, he looks pretty good for being married to
Barbra Streisand
(satire)
Yes Big Hollywood does apply the pressure unfortunately, the only effective influence is economic pain.
Starve Kingdom Hollywood out of business and the MFers won't have economic power to Command and Control the masses.
Regrettably, there are still far too many Americans consuming Kingdom Hollywood's crap; ask yourself this, are a few hours of brain-dead entertainment really worth the lifetime of living in a sewer?
As long as Americans continue to water the evil flower then the wicked garden will continue to grow; kill the evil flower so that something better can grow.
We need to start a new Fight Club…………….we'll call it,……………………Star-Puncher's.
Amen, I would love to meet some lefty HW idiot and tear them apart. And I would be proud to say that so and so thinks I'M the idiot! LOL Of course all my retorts would begin with, "Well, out here in the REAL world…"
Your not alone shel I can't get access to my comment pages and my points haven't moved in a while and I have quite a few thumbs up behind me. So we'll see. Here's hoping for both of us.
I completely disagree with the notion that it could only be produced if stars were involved. Does anyone else remember watching Ken Burnes' Civil War documentary? It was full of had ordinary-looking and unflashy historians talking about people who lived 150 yrs ago, including correspondence and journal entries from ordinary soldiers- and we were absolutely riveted. I immediately purchased all of Shelby Foote's books, and within a year had made a 3-day trip to Gettysburg. If the material is good, it speaks for itself without all of the fancy window-dressing.
I thought it was just me
I like to call him "Imadojihad"
but yeah i'd never even heard of "anti-WWII" except for some Nazis maybe
The dems believe that in order to be successful one must be ugly, inside and out. Just look at 99% of the lefts politicians.
I for one have ZERO hero's especially in Hollywood. I detest the lot of them and if CA should ever slide into the sea well that's quite alright with me. Sorry to the good people who still live there.
And for the bad poetry.
I find it hysterically funny for Chris Moore, or any of them that haven't served, to say they know what our soldiers are thinking. Has he actually talked to any soldier? Just another self-aggrandizing moment of a celebrity in sheep's clothing acting like they speak for those of us that they would never associate with publicly. Those soldiers know why they are there and what they are fighting for. They may have doubts about their commander-in-chief, tho. Yes, we are a nation of starf*ckers and have been for decades. As an artist, I don't understand the affliction. I look at them as the entertainers they are, not gods. They still do the same thing in the bathroom that I do.
Now, I like the sound of that! Making a list right now.
*shakes head* Why do we let stupid rule the world….
I usually go with AquaVelvaJad…..
[...] Zinn hypocrisy: Hollywood Marxoph… Howard Zinn hypocrisy: Hollywood Marxophiles defend promoting communism through capitalism. [...]
Looks aren't everything, but in a world of HD television, we may as well cede the shallow ground while seeking out more solid footing underneath.
The producers of this tripe know that this is all anti-American and would be rejected by the masses. So they have to fake everyone out with celebrities to make it more palatable. Who knows or cares if they actually buy this crap, they're just fancy packaging.
You can put sprinkles on a turd, but it's still a turd….
wasn't old bootlegger joe kennedy a anti ww2 guy, i thought he loved the other side, and got in trouble for saying so, also wasn't lindberg also a fan of the other side?
I wonder if they recognized Andrew Breitbart, thought to themselves "We can't let him speak", and cut the Q & A short. Just a thought.
Instead of "kick a ginger day" we can call it "kick a pansy day"
"Looks aren't everything" Try telling that to all of the superficial sheep out there though.
Yeah, there were a few anti-WW2 people, who eventually became anti-Cold War people which had children who became anti-American people.
As for the stars themselves, it's all about population control, though not in the common sense. They have to, repeat have to, control the population that gains access to them. Not only would it be potentially uncomfortable to mingle with the non-elite, it would be wholly inconvenient if they asked a question that challenged their beliefs. Sycophants and suck-ups in every avenue of the media.
I'm sooo jealous of your eloquence Hank..
"You can put sprinkles on a turd, but it's still a turd"
I'd settle for kicking our pansy in chief out of office.
that's not James.. it's Babs
It's Bush's fault.
Well I'm no Howard Zinn……
Thank the lucky stars for that!
I agree with you. The majority of celebrities deserve little more than pity or contempt. A few are actually worthy of respect. If an actor or musician is a fine artist but a crappy human being and a poor American, they don't get my respect or ttention.
If that's the case then they were smart. Andrew Breitbart would've dismantled their entire operation with one question.
…and that's why this project has all these empty-headed pseudointellectuals shilling for it. As noted in the article, it's highly ironic that the Zinn project, supposedly about "REAL history being made by the individual struggling against the elite in power" is being pumped by elites in Hollywood.
lol.@ tread.
I don't have a clue Shel but Intense Debate has been rather screwy this entire week. At least with my account anyway, they're probably obama lovers and are messing with his haters.
She only married him so that SHE would look good.
Maybe this is what Obama meant when he spoke of transparency. You can see right through this not-too-cleverly disguised play at revisionism.
HA! Even better "satire"
You just gave me an awesome idea for an April Fools' prank…
I'm sure it was no coincidence. Had it been Sean Penn or Janeane Garofalo or Chris Matthews "on deck", the session would've been extended.
Sorry Joshie, but you are being used as a tool. Yes. yes you are.
Lost all my points today as well. Guess I've got to start building it back up again.
The problem is that most Americans don't care. They want their entertainment – worrying about a star's political activities distracts from that. It's compartmental thinking.
I will predict that it will end badly……LOL
What a drag this is. It's like you spend all this time building a reputation and then BANG a war breaks out and you lose everything. It's like they burn your mental house down on Big Hollywood or something.
These people are cowards. If they really believed that Zinn is right then they'd welcome open debate about his admitted biased account of history.
I triple dog dare them to spend 20 minutes with Andrew Breitbart….
I agree – Tread is funny. Where did you get that crying obama kid you got as a avatar? That's hilarious..
I have to believe these celebs are so attracted to Zinn's history because they haven't studied any REAL history. They seem to think mainstream history is all "Columbus sailed the ocean blue" and "George Washington crossing the Delaware" mythology. Well, it was – for kindergarten students back in the 1950s. Today – not so much.
I think Zinn and Damon and their ilk are rebelling against something they don't really know anything about. Zinn spends all his time looking at history from the radical left so he has no idea what it looks like from any other perspective. He peremptorily rejects anything other than the class struggle narrative. And Damon doesn't know anything about history at all. His intellectual vacuum just happened to suck up A People's History and that was that, game over, all questions answered, no need for further discussion. And there are probably millions of Americans out there just as vacuuous as Damon. That's a scary thought.
Zinn – the Parson Weems of the New Left.
I've been noticing a creeping anti-ANY war attitude with the left, including WWII. Did we really have to fight that war? What would be wrong with speaking German in New York or Japanese in Los Angeles? And wasn't Japan all about oil anyway?* Can't we all be brothers (and sisters and transgenders)?
*note: it always is. When we bombed the oil fields at Plosesti we had to make sure the Chevron reserves were hit or else it would look like we were playing favorites.
lol..I stole the avatar from someone at facebook.
I think Damon actually believes he's Good Will Hunting….
and the funny thing is, I know REAL janitors with 5 times more intelligence and 100 times more wisdom than Mat DAAAAAAYMON.
That's true DW, I wonder who she could get next, Brad Pitt and George Clooney combined maybe?
i only have one thing to say, how DARE that piece of crap even say the the name of pat tillman. these celebrities are not the 'people', tillman and his fellow soldiers and the rest of us that work and build this country and raise our families that are THE PEOPLE.
As a historian it really offends me when professors like DuBois prostrate themselves and their academic integrity at the feet of the elites – i.e. the rich and powerful spoiled Hollywood leftist activist. A historian is defined by two things – objectivity and a reliance on reliable sources. Zinn rejects both and is therefore a mere propagandist. He is creating a liberal myth to sell liberal policies. He is no better than the Nazi propagandists who created the German myths that sold the National Socialist programs. DuBois knows this and yet she acts like a giddy school girl. Feminism and acadamia have really served us well as a nation. (Note sacasim in last remark.)

It a little disappointing to hear Morgan Freeman is attached to the project. I was just telling me wife yesterday that I thought Freeman is a class act because, if he is a liberal, he's not obnoxious about it. I still think he has a lot of class, but it's sad to see him involved in something leftie clowns like Damon and Josh Str, uh, Brolin, are involved in, like "The Celebrities Speak."
The question I'm wondering is how much their benefactors know. Does the Target Foundation know they are funding anti-American indoctrination? Do they know the center of this whirlwind of filth is a 9/11 Truther? Beyond the producers there are many groups funding this project. They need to be boycotted yesterday.
I triple-dog-dare them to spend 20 minutes with Elizabeth Cheney. Oh, I would pay so much money to see that. LOL.
Thank you StlDan !
Truthers have to be the biggest fools walking….
Ooooh even better…..
The Obama hard-sell can never succeed while the majority of Americans stubbornly cling to the notion that ours is an exceptional national history. Prepare to be lectured by our self-annointed "Betters" like Brolin, Tomei, and Damon that we are guilty, guilty, guilty of all of the world's ills.
The reply from the American people will be "pound sand."
It is no coincidence that movie attendance is down another 7% this year. The American public continues to vote with its feet.
Howard Zinn…….Did his Momma not give him enough attention? Or is this another classic example of the mentally ill in our country!
What the hell does "anti-WWII mean??" There should have been peace rallies to firmly demonstrate our opposition to Japan's brutal (and thoroughly racist) expansion into Asia? How many Nankings would the people of Asia have to suffer in the name of peace and social justice?
Should we have resorted to harsh editorials strongly condemning Germany's invasion of Europe and their Final Solution ("Let me be perfectly clear, we will bear witness…")? Armed resistance should have been replaced by limp-di*k negotiating ("Well, take the Czechs, but leave the Poles. Well, take the Poles, but leave the Dutch…)? Do these "liberals" not realize that in addition to Jews they were exterminating gays and handicapped wholesale? What is wrong with these idiots?
Where's Tom Hanks? Where's Spielberg to counter all this moronic pre-K simple-minded idiocy, spewed by these wealthy, privileged and utterly disconnected marionettes?
I've often thought about variations of similar activism conducted at celebrity appearances. One idea I had would be to attend a celebrity apparance or autograph signing and await the throng of screaming sheeple with a fully loaded firehose and just absolutlely let loose. Other ideas involve organizing a flash mob style attacks. My line of reasoning is that if an organization like PETA can climb up on a runway and attack models, than why can't it work the other way too?
"Does anyone out there still doubt that Big Hollywood puts pressure on people to embrace leftist politics?"
I certainly don't doubt it. I applaud it.
Whatever became of Morgan Freeman's alleged sex scandal? Not saying it's true, but if it was confirmed, it would kind of put a dent in your "class act" theory. Further reading on it – http://thesuperficial.com/2009/06/morgan_freeman_...
Great article as always Stage.
I think that most Hollywood types that are actors are ,as is thier job, trying to tap into emotion. They want to HELP People. To make them FEEL better about the world around them. So they are so passionate that it clouds their ability to think rationally. They FEEL it so deeply, then it must be true. but most of the time it is only a well intentioned problem for those that actually think to clean up…..
I hate these people, they are all just a bunch of elitist hypocrits that think they should be in charge of the universe
We are the quasi-minority.
I can't say for sure, but I have a hunch it has something to do with the missing climate gate data sets.
Married to Babs.
Well there goes my appetite for the day. So much for my ham and cheese on rye.
Because, sad to say, there's a lot more stupid people in the world than reasonable people.
Correct on both parts. Joe Kennedy was the US ambassador to Britain, and tried to convince them that Germany was really okay.
To be fair, there were a lot of Brits who honestly thought they should join Germany in taking out Russia. I believe Lindbergh was a eugenicists.
Perhaps the actors have a clause in their contracts, no public humiliation.
Yep…old joe didn't care much for Jews either…which explains his "confusion" as to Hitler.
Liz Cheney has come out as one of the more articulate voices on the right. I hope to see more of her.

Interesting and useless trivia: Japan did not want a war with America. They were pretty sure how it would turn out, and they were right on that part.
Japan's goal was to sucker punch America, knock us on our asses, and hope we'd negotiate for peace.
To paraphrase Borat 'not so much.'
Could not agree more.

My guess is Zinn is getting stinking, filthy rich over all of this.
There is a good chance, in my opinion, this could very well simply be a rouse to rob leftists idiots blind.
Forget it. Modern liberals never disagree with each other in public. They simply pretend it never happened.
That's why big labor who wants ANWR open for drilling (and big union jobs) can play nice with the leftists eco-nuts who want to destroy capitalism and put them all out of business.
They simply pretend none it is going on, and then Blame Bush.
I think it goes deeper than that. In my opinion, having been surrounded by people like this my whole life, its fear.
They can't handle the concept that some one or some thing is not in control of everything, making sure every one is taken care of, and it terrifies them.
One of the side affects of little or no faith. Being atheists may make them feel mentally superior, but it does nothing about human nature and our instincts to constantly be on the watch for danger.

Stage! Where the hell's your review of Mamet's "Race??"
They're bent over waiting to be lubed up.
Do you also applaud earthquakes? Hurricanes? Ethnic cleansing? Deathcamps? The Gulag? Nancy Pelosi?
Funny, my points didn't disappear, but for about an hour last night I couldn't access my comment history.
The reply from the American people will be "pound sand."
Essentially: "Go f_ck yourself, I haven't oppressed anybody."
Spielberg? You mean the asshole who directed Munich?
I think the most salient point, and it was made in the article, is that the mention of a lack of "anti WW11" programming wasn't even challenged. I'm used to liberals saying irresponsible, stupid things. The the thing I will never be used to is letting these stupid comments go un-checked.
Too many Americans lack the courage to stand up to these asinine comments or the brains to understand that they are indeed asinine.
