Obama’s ‘Arts Agenda’
by Larry O'ConnorDuring the 2008 campaign many of my earnest and passionate friends on the left kept bludgeoning me with the same mantra: ”Obama is the first Presidential candidate to have an ARTS AGENDA!” This fact seemed to make him immune from any other criticism with regard to minor issues like the economy or the war on terror. Whether the “Arts Agenda” was actually significant or effective or even a good idea seemed beside the point. Obama cared about artists and my friends in the theatre had spent way too long feeling neglected by their president.
To be sure, Candidate Obama did put forth an “Arts Agenda” which mostly consisted of increased funding for the NEA and health care for independent artists who work from project to project outside of a normal, W-2 type of job. At the moment, the all-important “Art Agenda” is no longer found on the still-active campaign website, but it did exist at one time, and you hear reference to this President’s “Arts Agenda” cropping up in all discussions in the artistic community including the infamous NEA conference calls from last month.
But now, with proper perspective, perhaps my artistic friends can see that the true “Arts Agenda” of this President is an agenda to USE artists to continue to promote HIS agenda.
Take a quick look over at the White House’s web page where the President lays out his issues. When you highlight the “Issues” menu item at the top of the main page, you see a list of 22 issues highlighted by this President, but nowhere are the Arts listed. On the last menu item, “Additional Issues” you finally find a reference to the Arts:
Our nation’s creativity has filled the world’s libraries, museums, recital halls, movie houses, and marketplaces with works of genius. The arts embody the American spirit of self-definition. As the author of two best-selling books — Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope — President Obama uniquely appreciates the role and value of creative expression.
That’s right, my friends. The clearly articulated “Arts Agenda” detailed on the White House’s website is really nothing more than a plug for Obama’s two books! I’m surprised he didn’t include hyper-links to Amazon.
When I first brought up the subject of the NEA Conference Calls to my group of friends in the theatre who lean to the left end of the spectrum, a lighting designer friend of mine commented to me that it is nothing new for an administration to use all of the tools at their disposal to push their agenda, and there was nothing wrong with it.
Reading the transcripts of the NEA Conference Calls and seeing the President’s “Arts Agenda” I can see now that my friend has used an apt description for artists who blindly follow this President and don’t question his use of artists in pushing his policies: Tools. Yes, tools, each and every one of them.

The "Arts Agenda" is a plug for his two books??? What's the title of the next Obama biography? "Affirmative Action EXTREME"???
I bet a dollar to a donut (and I like Shipley's) that these same-styled artists would have had aneurisms if George W. Bush had even DARED to ask them to push his agenda.
Tools, indeed.
I have several friends in the arts community who lean left. What makes me sad is that many of them have no idea that they are being used as tools to promote some crazy left-wing agenda. However, I think the tragedy of this situation is that today, many in the arts community know that they are being used as tools and they simply don't care. These creative thinkers don't realize they are giving up one of their most precious assets, their creative thinking.
So true, Stage. Thanks for another great article
The title of his next book? Mein Kampf Redux…………
"These creative thinkers don't realize they are giving up one of their most precious assets, their creative thinking. "
Not to mention their freedoms.
Sign them up for "Tool Academy"
Sure thing they'd go nuclear, but then these were all left wing tools all along.
Ugh… they are even putting that "art" into new shows… I was watching CBS's "The Good Wife" and the daughters room was covered in Obama "hope" posters… :/
Say what you like, Obama knows how to pay back his constituencies. This is just one more manifestation of the effects of allowing your culture and schools to fall into the hands of your opponents. Advocates of freedom are now paying the price for that.
The could all appear on "Tool Time".
Ugh… they are even putting that "art" into new shows… I was watching CBS's "The Good Wife" (it was a series premier with NCIS: LA and NCIS as a lead in so I thought what the hell) and the daughters room was covered in Obama "hope" posters… :/
It's TOOL TIME!!!!!
Sorry, just could NOT resist…..
…"Tool Time" with Barry Obama – "arrgh, arrgh, arggh, arggh…"
Leni Riefenstahl is laughing from her ring in hell, Joe McCarthy is spinning in his grave, and Joe Wilson is sticking to his guns.
Which is what we should be doing, too
art for arts sake…
Money for God's sake! As the 10cc song goes. And so, it is also true for the Obambots. Raise the art, comrade!
Fill the coffers of the state! Indoctrinate the masses!
Punish the petite bourgeoise. Take from them that which is rightfully ours. Let them know just who is boss.
But do it with pretty colors. Preferably Red.
MORE POWER!!!!!!!
Yes, BO the tool man doesn't like the country as it is, so "Let's re-wire it!"
no he's speaking my language!
now he's speaking my language!

It looks more like Peyton Manning than BO.
Yeah, I thought about watching that show but ended up watching something else we had recorded. Now I don't think I will bother watching it.
if by being their "moment" they mean to try and bend us over, well, they have a surprise waiting for them, now don't they…
Indeed. Complete with the mantra "More power."
Hmmmmm.

I tried watching that Leni Reifenstahl film "The Triumph of will"
that is really boring. I got though about 30 minutes of it.
I though that was supposed to make us want to join up or something
Obama has an arts agenda? I thought his agenda was himself.

Hope.
Change.
2010.
…and Buffy Wicks could be the lead "Tool Time" girl!
History gives us ample examples of what ultimately comes to the "useful idiots" once the agenda is achieved.

…Yeah, what the hell – we're already "in the red" (financially and politically).

I actually believe the President deserves credit where credit is due. I'm sorry, but my belief is that this kind of activity was conceived and put in place when the president hit the ground running.
The first leg of this far reaching agenda was put in place by passing the emergency Stimulus Bill partially written by the Apollo Alliance not our congress. In the Stimulus Bill organizations like the NEA were given money which was never intended to stimulate the economy but put in place to fund the presidential projects just like this. We the people, were not watching the ball. The
President now has the money to keep doing nefarious activities like this.
KEEP VIGILANT, PEOPLE.
The essence of artistic expression is to be able to address a deeper level of consciousness and bring it to light. What the NEA and Obama et all are asking artists to do is create commercials for his agenda. Any artist who does not know the difference does not deserve to be called an artist and critically speaking, their work will be dismissed as propaganda. Since Obama's books have been used so frequently by the Obama campaign as advertising for the politician, clearly they are simply "commercials" for him. Obama's "Arts Agenda" is obviously nothing more than a blatant attempt to buy up the NEA and co-opt artists to his personal agenda. The NEA is going along with it but artists should have the integrity to decline.
So nice to see that someone has studied their Cold War history. I love McCarthy.
Since when is one long continuous infomercial considered art?
Stage Right hit the nail on the head too. The only art Obama is interested in is that which glorifies him or as a means to hawk his ghost written books for some more chedda.
He has an "arts agenda" alright…
…every totalitarian does.

The One has a plan for everything…including cool posters and bumper-stickers, of course.
but we need not remain there. Viva la revolucian!
but we need not remain there. Viva la revolucion!
How about -Glorious Leader doing the perp-walk.,or Glorious Leader the subject of a grand jury investigation or Glorious Leader in a giant vat of tinkle? Now that's Art!
Yeah well we're all artists now – right?! I need money so I'll just go whip up a poster to get my check. brb
Those Glorious pieces will have to await a Ron Paul presidency and would have to be privately funded, but we won't need to worry about it if a tool like the squirrel in the popcorn popper Hucksterbee manages to grease the skids with his snake oil.
Then we get NEA funded Glorious Leader Takes Rightful Place as Head of UN. Huckabee is just lame enough to push for it.
Let's just hope the fraud ends when this guy gets tossed or impeached. The wrong guy gets in next time and we are done as a first world nation.
Here's my poster for the NEA…how long do you think it will take before I get my check?

Who are you to say it's not, hmmmmmmmm? See, we're just not used to thinking of infomercials as art, like we once didn't think of bicycles and urinals as art. But now we're more enlightened.

Stage Right: The agenda is located here, save it before it disappears: http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/issues/additional/...
I wonder if the lightning designer would have approved of Bush using the arts to promote the removal of Saddam Hussein? Or personal health accounts? Or personal retirement accounts instead of Social Security?
well, Obama DOES NEED a propaganda wing of his Obamanation…
His next book could titled "The Audacity of My Father, He Knocked Up a White Chick and Split Back To Africa"
it's wordy, but *descriptive*
This is Our Moment?
Leni Reifenshtal had similar ideas.
Where is Joe McCarthy when we need him?
Joe Wilson is still right………………………………………………….
The NEA is making general purpose art of Glorious Leader:
Glorious Leader Scolds
Glorious Leader Smiling Benevolently @ Unwashed Masses
Glorious Leader Shaking Head Sadly With Disdain as World Realizes The Emeror Has No Clothes.
We already have plenty of Glorious Leader Looking Superior With Nose in Air.
That just about covers our Teleprompter in Chief's range and depth and could be flashed on screen as appropriate during speeches & plastered all over the globe depending on the country you live in.
Chavez gets to take home the "Glorious Leader Smiles Benevolently @ Unwashed Masses" posters to plaster beside his own images.
Do the math on what the other countries get.
Hopefully the NEA has plenty of the "Glorious Leader Scolds" to go around…we are going to be needing a lot of them here at home too…
So leftwing artists now think it is OK for the government to use them as their Tools………
Oh my how the high and mighty have fallen
I am not sure but I here the IRS will be making a visit next Tuesday………….
Stage Right
I hear Nero was a big supporter of the arts.
Even did not let a little thing like the burning of the city stop his violin virtuoso……..
Hmm…..this is troubling

Oh damn, I have plans that day. I'm going to be engaging in evil capitalist behaviors. I guess they'll have to come another day.
Thank you! I remember seeing it as a PDF, but I couldn't find it the other day! I hope I characterized it properly…
Evil Capilalist Behaviors — tsk tsk did you not hear Obama won. All evil behaviours belong to Socialists now. Gotta spread the wealth you know
I am spreading the wealth. I'm spreading it to Border's, Kohl's, and then I'm gonna spread a little to the Atlanta Bread Company. I'm doin' my part!
you got the "high" part right in any case.
