Honoring September 11th: I’m Just Pissed
by Stage RightI’m not sad today. I’m not melancholy. I’m not remembering the first time I saw a sunset reflected off the west-facing side of the towers. Today doesn’t elicit any of those feelings in me.
This day makes me pissed off.
And I’m not just pissed at the terrorists. I’m pissed at the panty-waist theatre community I am a member of.
Case in point: ”One of the first plays about Muslim life in the United States debuts in a time and place fraught with symbolism: Sept. 11th, in New York City.”
The two-act play which the playwright likens to a Muslim-American “Death of a Salesman” opens tonight at the Nuyorkian Poets Cafe, about 2 miles from ground zero.
I have a thought: Could we maybe have one or two plays written about our heroic soldiers or the brave first-responders, or a human drama about the devestation the families of victims of 9/11 have had to endure BEFORE we have a play about the struggles of Muslim life in the United States?
The play is called “The Domestic Crusaders” and its web page describes the play in this way:
With a background of 9-11 and the scapegoating of Muslim Americans, the tensions and sparks fly among the three generations, culminating in an intense family battle as each “crusader” struggles to assert and impose their respective voices and opinions, while still attempting to maintain and understand that unifying thread that makes them part of the same family.
According to the MSNBC article, playwright Wajahat Ali was heavily influenced by the 9/11 attacks:
When the World Trade Center towers fell, Ali was the head of the Muslim Student Association at the University of California, Berkeley. As the son of a Pakistani immigrant family who “never hid my Muslim identity,” Ali says the tragedy came to define his college years.
He devoted 70-80 percent of his time to activism — organizing Jumaa prayers outdoors on campus, distributing flyers, inviting students to discussion panels — in a relentless effort to fight what he considered misinformation about Islam.
Apparently, Ali has had trouble getting his play produced. The reason?
“I think it was because the hysteria, the fear, that kind of represented the voice of the Bush administration were still lingering,” Ali says. “Even Dixie Chicks, the whitest women in America, who loved Jesus and the Apocalypse, were branded as traitors…. here I am, with a multi-syllabic Arabic name. I am sure people freaked out.”
But now Ali’s play will premiere tonight, on 9/11, in New York City. Ali says: “Right now, it’s 2009. It’s kind of a different atmosphere.”
Yeah, it sure is. And that’s another reason why I’m pissed off.

Ali is, any way you cut it, a cheeser of the worst degree. I distinctly remember a brilliant speech Bush delivered at national cathedral where he specifically went out of his way to defend muslum Americans. Yet he babbles on about Natalie Mains ("I know what is going on. I read newspapers. I'm so ashamed he's from my state.")
I'm angry that US tax dollars flow to the terrorists in the foreign state of Israel – a nation that murdered many fine servicemen in their attack on the UNARMED ship, the USS Liberty! Lo and behold who do we find cheering while filming the WTC collapse…as if they knew the attack was going down…but 5 Israelis. Well, if this person thinks his play is going to smooth anything over with me, he's dead wrong. Why not a play about the fanatical side of Islam, you know, the side that's creating terror around the world?
If the over billion Muslims in the world (or whatever the number is) won't stand and denounce the fanatics (as apposed to the relatively VERY minor who do, I'll take their silence as indifference. Their indifference is deafening.
I feel sorry for the rational people in the 'arts' community; to be surrounded by a majority who are idiots must be dispiriting.
Finally, someone else comes forward with their real feelings. I had to avoid the news all day because I get furious watching the events on 9/11. And I'm talking the kind of rage that makes me want to smash my OWN STUFF. I couldn't even participate in any of the threads here today because I didn't want my anger to sour all the beautiful tributes everyone else had posted.
I think what pisses me off the most is the Disneyland "It's a Small World Afterall" approach our Dear Leader and his administration now takes when confronting this menace. I'm also pissed at the lack of anger/action taken by the muslim community here and everywhere else around the world. My God if the so called good muslims could muster the same degree of passion against radical jihadists that they did about some stupid cartoons that no one ever saw or cared about, then I might have some more respect for Islam.

The USS Liberty was a spy ship that was mistaken for an Egyptian warship during the Six Day War. Israel asked the US to keep all its ships 100 miles from the warzone but for whatever reason the USS Liberty got within 14 miles of Israel’s coast and the confusion began. There have been more than a dozen govt investigations into the matter and all of them concluded it was a tragic mistake; you could call it a case of friendly fire during the fog of war. Several books have been written on the matter and they all reached the same conclusion.
As far as these phantom photographers it’s the same type of libel as the claim that 4,000 Jews stayed home that day. It’s all bullshyt peddled by raging Jew haters; Snopes debunked the nonsense.

No, they have not reached the same conclusion and the ones who were actually THERE knew it was no mistake. They took pictures of low flying Israeli recon planes before the attack.
The ones jumping for joy while filming the WTC collapse were not only arrested by the FBI but later SUED the FBI for it (because even if they are Mossad agents they are, after all, prone to sue as you know) and later boasted about it on Israeli tv. You can find the video on youtube.

Okay I spent most of this day with a wet face but now…I'm pissed. I am a blood born New Yorker. 9/11 was my second day in college. There I was, nervous about college, friends and buying $100 books and then my city was blown apart. I grew up in the Towers. Many memebers of my family worked there for most of my life. 8 years later I wonder…what happened to my city and who the hell are these people in it. These liberal rats that populate Union Square and the Village, degrading our soldiers and celebrating the poor misunderstood muslims. It's like they care more about outsiders than they do their own.

Actually, there IS a play about the first responders. It's called "The Guys," by Anne Nelson, a former journalist, who found herself in the position of helping a fire captain write eulogies for some men in his company, men lost on 9/11. She wrote an excellent script based on her experiences with the fire captain.

Today (or rather, yesterday) is/was a day to remember that Islamic militants slaughtered nearly 3,000 civilians on American soil, in accordance with what their ideology teaches.

"The Guys" was also adapted into an excellent film of the same name, with Sigourney Weaver as Anne Nelson and Anthony LaPaglia as the fire chief. I never got to see the play, but the film moved me deeply. I'm surprised it didn't get more attention.
