‘Nine’ Opens November 25th
by Larry O'ConnorHere at Big Hollywood, the film folks get all the fun by previewing film trailers in their posts. But, since the upcoming “Nine” is a film adaptation of a Broadway musical, I’m claiming this one!
Directed by Rob Marshall, who did a pretty good job adapting a little show called “Chicago” to film, “Nine” is set for a Fall opening which usually means the studio has Oscar hopes. “Nine” was a musical adaptation of Federico Fellini’s masterpiece “8 1/2″ and was staged by Tommy Tune in 1982 starring Raul Julia as Italian film director Guido Contini. For that incredibly demanding role in the film, we get Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis. The cast includes Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Fergie, Judy Dench and none other than Sophia Loren!
Of course, after seeing the trailer you will agree that I could have stopped at Penelope Cruz… I mean… well… you’ll see…

What a disappointing trailer! Could swear I saw a better one on you tube…
Saw the Tommy Tune production with Sergio Franchi (no Raul Julia, bummer) and the incredible Anita Morris—- I can understand why Penelope Cruz was in tears if they even try to re-create Morris's amazing moves.
We know that DDL has cornered the market on tortured; I loved him in Last of the Mohicans, and I hope he delivers in this picture…could do without Kate Hudson impersonating her mom again, but what a cast! Hope a better trailer is forthcoming.
First of all. . .can't wait! Second, Kate Hudson. . .ARGH! She falls into my category of one who needs to have her SAG card revoked. I don't get it.
Ok, Stage. . .why wasn't Antonio considered(or was he and I missed it). His Guido on Broadway was wonderful. He's got world wide box office appeal. I don't even remember his name being thrown around pre-pro.
Tommy "867-5309" Tune?
I miss Raul Julia, he was a great actor. Daniel Day Lewis impresses me much and I have always liked Sophia Loren. I don't know about Fergi or Cruz though. Kidman can be hit or miss. It looks interesting and I will watch for it..
I do have to admit though, that I did not enjoy Chicago the movie. It felt to me like a rip-off of Cabaret.
Andrew, nice to see you got outta that 109 rut;)
LOL!! Yeah, I just couldn't get over that plateau for some reason, but once I did. . . bam 112.
I agree on "Chicago.' It was an inferior version of the original "Roxie Hart" with lame attempts at the musicality of "Cabaret." It didn't work on either level.
Actrually it would be nice if when musicals are made they'd (who is they really?) let the music and set sell it and not "stars". I'm in concurrance regarding Chicago. Who the hell's idea was it to get Renee Zellwigger?
"A Chorus Line" meets "All That Jazz" meets "Mambo Italiano." What's not to like?
I admit it… I couldn't sit through 8 1/2.
But this looks interesting.
And I liked Chicago… I must be younger so I don't have the memories of Cabaret like you guys do
867-5309 was Tommy Tutone. But is now Benjamin Franklin Plumbers.
It used to be a funny to have that number. They looked for it on purpose.
I just find it sad on so many levels. But I digest.
Yeah! The movie was a huge hit and won multiple Oscars! What a terrible call THAT was!
I'm not a fan of Zellwiiggers by any means, but I really liked the movie, and she wasn't full-chipmunk face yet. Certainly not "Cabaret," (and where's the blu ray of that?? The dvd version I have is shockingly bad quality) but for a modern movie musical, I think it's pretty good.
Mrs. Right and I were having that exact conversation last night… What about Antonio? Here are the reasons we came up with:
1. He already had his chance with 'Evita' and that was less than spectacular.
2. Daniel Day Lewis, when all is said and done, is a much finer actor and has two Oscars.
3. They purposely wanted to distinguish the film from the last revival.
4. They didn't want Melanie Griffith hanging around the set
5. Two words: Spy Kids (That one is Mrs. Right's since she had to sit through it with all the little Righties)
Are you listening to the 1982 Raul Julia original? That has Be Italian for sure.
I was no fan of Renee in "Chicago" either. But as far as I am concerned with "Nine"…. Penelope Cruz, in that costume, playing that part, doing that choreography…… Brilliant Casting!
Kit… I disagree… I love "Nine" and I am very loyal to the original. So for me to see that trailer and have an overwhelming need to go out and buy a ticket RIGHT NOW tells me that the trailer is pretty effective. Maybe it's just Penelope's costume though.
Looks pretty good to me. A shame Jane Krakowski couldn't have gotten in. She did win the Tony for it and she' still in great voice and looks great on 30 Rock. SR, hangover all gone now?
maatkare… LOVED Krakowski in "Nine" and "Starlight Express" and REALLY REALLY REALLY loved her in "Grand Hotel…. but given the choice between her and Penelope Cruz….. come on!
Hangover is gone… thanks to Excedrin Migraine by the handful… highly reccomended….
But tonight I'm back to the martini glass… I promised a big one to GG and then we have to negotiate his deal for Fiddler.
For those of you wondering about the aforementioned revival starring Antonio Banderas and Jane Krakowski, please tolerate the intro by Melanie Griffith and watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZDxvSU13vo&fe...
I know, I was just joking around.
Jenny Jenny, who can I turn to…..
Anita Morris in tht mesh jumpsuit . . . mmmm . . . I'm looking forward to seeing Judi Dench in it. They don't call her "dame" for nothing.
I miss Raul Julia, too.
Stage Right, I'd love to hear your opinion of other renditions of plays to movies and whether or not they were successful (loved your discussion of Sound of Music, for instance), if you have the time. Have you written about the Sweeny Todd movie on this site?
That Be Italian song has me intrigued, and I'll see basically anything with Judy Dench in it. The only question is, who will I make go with me?
Jaci: I'm working on a book: "The Husband's Guide to the Broadway Musical" Maybe if you get it for Mr. Jaci he'll come around! Otherwise, I'll let you know when I'm in your neighborhood!
I haven't, but it's an idea I've been working on….
I thought "Chicago" was dismal, darkly lit and the camera stopped to worship whoever was black. Painful.
yeah i figured you were. I just really hate unclever uses of stuff i like.
un clever
ungood
unhappy
i know nothing about the stage play or fellini's movie — in fact, that it's fellini means you'd have to convince me this was worth my time. stageright, you may have loved it on broadway and therefore find the trailer enough, but as a complete outsider to either previous version, i have to say "great sounding cast, i like the be italian song, and i don't see anything here that draws me to see this movie even though i've always loved stage musicals."
hope they do better in trying to appeal to the uninitiated or this is going to flop.
Whoa, something I disagree with you about. Sorry, but I'm just not much of Pene Cruz fan. But I certainly don't think less of ya!!
"Yeah! The movie was a huge hit and won multiple Oscars! What a terrible call THAT was!
"
ASo are you saying that people who make decisions for the Oscars are always right about what is good and what's not? Hmmm.
OK Holly… but… did you see her COSTUME?
The movie looks interesting, but what is it with Hollywood? In the next 5 months we have 9, $9.99, District 9, and 9 coming out (all fairly big releases). Do they just have no coordination when it comes to names of upcoming movies?
Come on B! Penelope seems to have taken the underrated but talented Anita Morris's role, it seems; is Nicole Kidman taking Krakowski's role? Still watching the Youtube spot….
SR–you are closer to the subject, and my memory is dim about the Nine I saw in 1983 (?), but I don't remember the Italiana number—and I guess seeing a woman with a British accent tell a Brit actor to "think Italian" just threw me…after watching the trailer a few more times, I will admit I'm a bit intrigued, now that I have gotten over the "Laugh In" flashback with Goldie Jr. going a go-go….still don't get the Italiana song, but the images are enticing. I'll probably see it on DVD, since I don't get to the theatres much—film or live, anymore.
I'm a girl, Stage, so I was noting how DDL seems to have regained some of his 'Mohicans' era hotness, but I get ya. Still, it's a shame that as usual they passed up the stage star for a movie star.
I hated "Moulin Rouge". (5-second jump-cutting gives me a headache; I guess the transition from music videos to movies can be difficult for directors.) I wasn't fond of the score, either…
But Nicole Kidman's duet of "Something Stupid" with Robbie Williams really made a believer out of me. Her voice is crystal clear, pitch perfect, and pleasant of tone. And if you've ever seen the music video of this song… WOW!
Who is singing the "Be Italian" song? Can it be Fergie? Don't know much about her singing, but it sounds like she has great chops if it is her! I can't imagine who, among the other women stars, it could be.
No, I'm saying the producers of Chicago set out to make a successful, profitable film…and they did. From their standpoint, I'm sure they feel the idea of casting Zellwigger was a hell of a good one.
She had on a costume? Sorry, SR, I'm just being silly, I'll go now.
OK, Ok, I'm backing down. When it comes to musicals, I'm more of a Rogers & Hammerstein kinda gal. Just ask my husband. I tortured him last night by making him watch Oklahoma!
Yup… that was Fergie!
You're a girl? That changes EVERYTHING! All this time I could have been flirting with you!
"Be Italian" was the number the Italian prostitute does with the boys and the tamborines in the 1983 production. The character with the British accent was actually French in the play… Lillian Montevecchi (I doubt I spelled that right) She sings the Follies Bergere' number. She is Guido's producer.
