8pm PST Sunday: Live Blogging the Tonys — Well, Sort Of
by Larry O'ConnorPop some popcorn, tune in to CBS, and fire up the laptop… We’ll be live-blogging the Tony Awards during the West Coast tape delay starting at 8:00 PM Pacific Time, tomorrow night!
Come and join me, Stage Right and a whole host of Big Hollywood contributors as we keep a running tally of all the same-sex marriage references, rate the pretentious hyperbole on a scale of 1-to-10 and hold our collective breath when Jane Fonda is given an open microphone!

Since the Tony’s will be on live in New York three hours ahead of our blogging session, I have a suggestion for those of you in the Eastern zone: TiVo the Tonys and watch the Laker game! Then, when the game is over, start your playback at 11:00 PM Eastern and jump on to Big Hollywood for all the live-blogging hilarity! Otherwise, don’t jump in and spoil it for the rest of us!

Stage Right, I like you and all but there's no way I'm staying up late for the Tonys. I hope people don't leave you hanging, but I'm afraid that will be a lonely thread.
Write out a lot of jokes ahead of time, set up some sort of "autopost" to throw them out every five minutes, and get some sleep!
Ha! I hear ya Kriskey…. but we have plenty of readers on the West Coast… it IS Big HOLLYWOOD after all….
Don't worry about me… we theatre folk are night owls… I have my last cup of coffee right after intermission! Also, I have a bunch of little kids.. no rest for the WICKED!
Oooh, everyone can be jealous of me now. I'm going to the final rehearsal for the Tonys tomorrow morning.
I think we should take a shot each time a movie/tv star presenter takes the stage who has no connection to the theater, but was hired by CBS in a desperate attempt to boost ratings.
"Now presenting the Tony Award for Lighting Design, Miley Cyrus!"
If we did that, I'm afraid we'd all pass out before the show was half over.
If the cast of "High School Musical" is in any way represented…well, when you hear about the shooting spree, it, er…wasn't me!
Too bad BevfromNYC you're just going to final rehearsal. Id love to see you race down the aisle, (beautifully coiffed, elegantly gowned, tastefully bejeweled of course),to leap the stairs (or grand jete" in ballet terminology) and sweep across the stage to whisk the microphone away from whichever righteous wind bag happens to be up there at the time. If it were Jane Fonda as Stage Right offers I would hope it be recorded for posterity. And yes, if not jealous, totally envious….enjoy!
Bev enjoy it! My favorite part of the DR is when the stand-ins pace through the musical numbers because the actual performers are doing a Sunday mat and can't make it. Always good for laughs.
Hey Stage Right,
Don't forget to remind Gary Graham he was going to help you out.
See you here tomorrow night, I'm looking forward to it.
What's a Tony?
Triish: Gary is all set. You can count on him bringing a little testosterone to the party!
There's word online that Disney-Pixar's title character from the 2008 CGI movie of the same name, WALL-E, will be a part of the tribute to Jerry Herman. Herman wrote/composed "Hello, Dolly!" which featured prominently in the film of last year "WALL-E".

Shrek…"Let your freak fly" what is this about? It felt like a gay pride parade.
Ooooo, I just saw where you are on tape delay. Sorry.
Oh, I forgot you guys would be live-blogging this! Awesome. It's lonely on the Broadway message boards when you know 99.99 percent of them would hate your guts if they knew who you were.
Stage Right, for some reason I can't send a reply to other's post, so here is my response about Gary "You can count on him bringing a little testosterone to the party!".
Bring it on! After dealing with 8 teams of adult lacrosse players last night, Gary will be a delight to the party!
The actual live blog will be starting on the tape delay for the West Coast guys…. it will start at 8PM Pacific…. Meantime… if you East Coasters want to chime in now… use the comment section here! How awesome is Liza?????
Oh, right, I forgot about the tape delay too.
Sorry. (You've only explained it, what, 15 times?)
Are we allowed to talk spoilers? Well, I'll just say that I've been very pleased with at least a couple of the winners!
Only two white knots sighted so far, by the way. Why does Anne Hathaway always make her date wear one and not wear one herself?
Also, the "Billy Elliott" kid is an amazing dancer. (I wonder how they picked the one to do the Tony broadcast, drawing straws?) Although "Aah! Aah! Aah!" doesn't make for much of a lyric.
I had to mute it. That really got annoying.
Spoilers are fine here… I think if anyone is refreshing this screen they already know…. We are less than an hour away for the West Coast feed!
Sadly, these days, it IS a good lyric.
My favorite bad lyric is from Joseph:
"Greatest man since Noah,
Only goes to show-a!"
Good ole Tim Rice.
Don't miss the guy who walked face-first into the scenery. (He was fine.) Apparently he's some well-known rocker, but I wouldn't know. I don't know one rocker from another — that's partly why I'm a Broadway fan.
I take it back — Anne had her white knot dutifully pinned on when she trotted out to introduce the number from "Hair" with a spiel all about hope and social change and blahdidy blah blah blah.
And now the "Hair" people are practically giving the audience lap dances. Ew.
I think I've partied with a few of those folks…
Ripley's performance in the number from "Next to Normal" was great, but her speech was a little . . . weird.
Sorry for the, what, quadruple post? Guess I'm the self-appointed keeper of the thread till the West Coast starts.

Thank you StageRight. I will post my comments I was gathering for the rebroadcast blog. It was rather a bore of a show so I wont be following along with you all but enjoy and thank you:
– Shrek…"Let your freak fly" what is this about? It felt like a gay pride parade.
– Doesn't NPHarris play the ladies man on How I Met Your Mother? Believable, no?
– I didn't know Lord Farqua was flaming. Never got that from the Shrek movie.
– Sour notes from the Dancing Queen singers. Ouch. No thanks.
– You cut off Tom Kit winner and let presenter come out and intro a WSStory scene and inform me some of the play is in Spanish?! Um…those family members and hard workers in the field wont hear their name ring out across the stage in appreciation and I wouldn't understand the play. *fail all around* Are they advertising for a Mexican audience? Have we come to a point in America where culture elites want to establish themselves in Spanish? *sad*
– Blah blah. I changed the channel to Ice Road Truckers.
P.S. I do drive and take the train into NYC. I could be buying tickets to your shows.
Brett Michaels lead singer from Poison, sex tape with Pam Anderson, show on VH1 called Rock of Love to find him a ho, and other various things to celetrate. I think this was the best part of the whole show. Funny now that I know it wasn't a joke. It was hard to tell since the camera was pulling back and cut away.
I really think he was lip singing. Anyone?
These awards are a yearly three hour commercial to encourage people to see a live show on Broadway. Given the picks this year, I don't see people running to buy tickets for half the stuff presented. More lowlights then highlights
On a positive note
Liza Minelli – did a good job with her performance – but the show closed in December
Alice Ripley – gave a great performance to a show that at best has a cult following. But her speech sounded a like she was auditioning for Eva Peron. Stop yelling.
The lead three boys from Billy Elliott – gave the best and most genuine speech of the evening. But the production number from the show was not a good pick. These were much better numbers in that show.
Angela Lansbury – gave a classy and dignified speech.
The actress who won for West Side Story – seemed in a state of shock but gave a nice speech.
Neil Patrick Harris – tried to keep the show light but it moved like an elephant through a Hall of Mirrors. I kept thinking it could be worse (Rosie O'Donnell or Whoopi Goldberg)
The Jersey Boys montage was good but only reinforced how weak the selections were this year and it won three years ago and is probably still the best musical now running along with South Pacific.
The lowlights
For a three hour production couldn't they have devoted a little more time to seeing a scene from the plays? Instead of a few lines.
Jane Fonda being nominated in a performance that got mediocre reviews, while Kristin Scott Thomas (The Seagull) was acclaimed by the critics wasn't even nominated. What a short memory for the nominators the show closed in December. So don't nominate the best nominate the stuff still running. (Sidebar – The Jane Fnda play was always at half capacity before it closed a month early. And it was a half capacity with most ticketss sold for 1/2 off. The house was often papered)
Trotting out the same old people year in year out, many who occasionally will do a Broadway show (Edie Falco, Jessica Lange).
Other observations:
As for the presenters, Jessica Lange looked like her dress was three times smaller then when she last wore it and moved into the Kathleen Turner league of Was Hot Once. She needed a mirror or someone to dress her better. Most actresses choose to look better by camouflaging their body flaws – she seemed to showcase them, by wearing a dress that showed how lumpy and out of shape she is. Underpants and a bra might have helped. As much as I hate her politics, Susan Sarandon proved an older woman can look good when attired well. Even Jane Fonda looked better, but at 70-something she needs to cut back on showing what little cleavage she has. Carrie Fisher proved that an more ample woman can dress more appropriately. Hopefully, George Lucas is done tinkering with Star Wars or I feel bad for Mark Hamill if they need to reshoot the swinging across the Death Star Scene.
Is it me or is it God's joke that Kristin Chenoweth has an extraordinary singing voice but her speaking voice is like Lina Lamont in Singin' in the Rain.
The revivals Guys and Dolls, West Side Story and Hair had a why revive look to them. Guys and Dolls looked charmless, West Side Story looked the same as it always has (although I'm not not sure but both Tony and Maria seemed to be "pitchy" and if he wasn't body miked – you would not hear him) and Hair seems very dated.
This show needs to be streamlined and moved to Bravo
