Richard Dreyfuss Can’t Remember His Anti-American Dialogue
by Larry O'ConnorRichard Dreyfuss and Elizabeth McGovern have travelled across the pond to star in a play about America’s torture of terrorist suspects. That’s right, not “alleged” torture. It’s a fact as far as this play is concerned. And, the funny thing about the Variety review is that the fact that the whole world knows that America is guilty of torture undermines the effect of the play:
The terrible timing is not Kevin Spacey’s fault: He couldn’t have known “Complicit” — U.S. dramatist Joe Sutton’s fictional indictment of his country’s possible condoning of torture and rendition — would premiere after President Obama had taken steps to dismantle that practice.
Clips of a TV interview with real-life BBC senior political commentator Andrew Marr provide details of Ben’s inflammatory publication, none of which can be news to British audiences with even a cursory knowledge of Guantanamo and other widely exposed scandals.
The idea of starring in a play directed by Kevin Spacey at The Old Vic along with the opportunity to slander and indict his country on foreign soil must have been too great a temptation for Dreyfuss to pass up. But, according to Bloomberg, he should have taken a little extra time in trying to learn his lines before taking to the boards:
The U.S. actor has often spoken of his poor memory. In “Complicit,” the director Kevin Spacey takes the unusual step of allowing Dreyfuss to wear an earpiece for word prompts. In Spacey’s minimalist in-the-round production at the Old Vic, the device is fully visible.
Although this was probably a more elegant solution for Dreyfuss’ problem than Val Kilmer’s infamous use of teleprompters in Ten Commandments, The Musical, it’s still pretty embarrassing to stride the same boards as Edmund Kean, John Gielgud and Alec Guiness with a production assistant whispering lines in your ear… Weak call, Mr. Holland.
But a minor detail like learning ones lines for a play shouldn’t stop an actor from seizing the moment and trashing your country with lies and innuendo. I love how the “US tortures prisoners at Gitmo” is just accepted as common knowledge in some circles. I can’t stand up at a cocktail party and gently question the accuracy of such a statement without being inundated with a barrage of ad hominem attacks on my intelligence. If you don’t agree with the premise, you’re just an idiot!
I may be an idiot, but for the chance to play the Old Vic, I could learn my lines in a week… and I’m not even an actor!

Waiting to have factual data before running with it is a novel idea. Imagine if more liberals gave that a try. They would likely be speechless most of the time.
Nicely done.
“I love how the “US tortures prisoners at Gitmo” is just accepted as common knowledge in some circles.”
Just like, no doubt, the acceptance in those same circles of Israel’s “apartheid policy” toward the Palestinians, that “Bush lied, kids died”, and other ludicrous crap like that.
It frankly doesn’t surprise me in the least.
Understandable. His skull is so full of liberal talking points bullcrap that he can’t think straight. Maybe he should reprise the hunchbacked lisping Hamlet role he played in The Goodbye Girl. The Bard must be so proud.
Dreyfuss’ acting skills have just gone straight to hell since he stopped snorting coke and driving into trees.
What is scarry about these Anti-American plays, movies and fake news programs like Jon Stewarts is that younger people and other Ozombies (Obama worshippers) get their “information” from them. They think it is actual truth and use it as their talking points in everyday conversation.

Fair enough; but when the yutes learn the actual facts it’s “blowback” time on the loons, and one of reasons why GOP often earns the Executive office against all media driven odds. Or, when I entered Berkeley in 1976 I soon thereafter voted for Shirley Chisholm – since learning mucho about life I’ve voted for GW twice and have a signed letter from him on wall over my desk.

I hope this helps.
I’m with you, Stage Right. The Old Vic for God’s sake — the Old Vic!!! I hung up the acting part of my theatre/broadcast/film degree long ago, but I’m still nauseous thinking about an alleged actor needing what amounts to cue cards. If nothing else, improvise with all that angry rhetoric too many Hollywood-ites have. Hmmm, on second thought…
Mr. Hollands Old-Puss’s best foot in mouth was a few years back when he was on the Charlie Rose show. The great film actor was railing against the evils of television, – how it corrupts the mind, and sells the soul etc.
His Rockport, (all rubber non-cruelty version) was placed firmly in his mouth by a caller that asked him (paraphrasing here): “He Mr. anti TV, aren’t you the voice over announcer for HONDA and Mc Donalds TV commercials?????”
LOL. What would Bugs Bunny call him?
But remember, Dreyfuss and co. love America … they just side against it at every possible opportunity and never, ever consider that the country’s enemies might be fudging the truth (tales of nonstop torture in Gitmo) to aid their cause.
I’m trying to figure out if there’s any amount of money or any acting job that would be appealing enough to me to take every opportunity to slam my country. …. naa…can’t think of any.
(to say nothing of the FACT that we have been kept safer at least in two instances from having rec’d information through torture) Why’s THAT not okay? ….because “WE are BETTER than THEY ARE?” (=deader than they are….) You’re darned right! Waterboarding vs Daniel Pearl’s end?
We’re much better..
Maybe we do need to get a bill of rights together for the alleged terrorists. Those poor souls have been abused enough and need to go through our legal system – for a different brand of abuse and frustrations.
Even though they are not covered by the Geneva convention we should afford them the right to a fair trial. The problem may be one of national security issues that may pop up as necessary evidence of conviction. Now – whether we hold them in Gitmo or Colorado’s supermax doesn’t matter – does it? Seems to me the bad guys would enjoy the tropical weather better than the rather chilly winters in CO. – I would. I actually spent 2 weeks in Gitmo when I was in the Navy and got the best tan of my life there.
Titov –
Way to sidestep the facts in service to your hate-filled agenda. Would thought it was obvious that it doesn’t matter what one CALLS a war. It matter how those who wish to invoke the Geneva Convention conducted themselves. Did they follow Geneva? If not, the signatories to the Geneva Convention are not bound to follow Geneva.
Let’s play baseball. You get three strikes. I don’t follow the “strike” concept and so get as many pitches as I want until I hit the ball safely (I don’t follow the “out” concept either).
Result according to you: that’s ok because I “call” the game baseball.
Getting through your thick ideology, yet?
Plisskan79 said….Just keep in mind the fact you hate Bush and American use of “torture” will not save you from a terrorist attack. Al Qaeda murders Western liberals and conservatives alike.
I agree with all of your points except this one. Islamic extremists of all groups hate Liberals far more than they hate Conservatives. Homosexuals, women’s rights, freedom of expression, sexual liberation, relaxed drug laws….all the things that Liberals consider their issues land them 100% on the wrong side of radical Islam. They will be the first ones that the terrorists come for (although the terrorists tend to be a tad indiscriminate when they get all worked up).
I listened to a couple interviews recently with people who’ve worked at GITMO (including Major Kyndra Rotunda), and although I’m sure it wouldn’t convince the people with Bush Derangement Syndrome, they made very strong cases that the people remaining at GITMO have had exhaustive hearings to guarantee their rights (as much as they can under the circumstances). It’s funny to hear Liberals rail about trials for the detainees. Although I’m usually on their side on these issues, we’ve never had trials for captured POWs (which is what the Left claim they are when they’re asking for Geneva Convention rights) until after the war, and to my knowledge, no country ever has.
However, our president – the lightworker – has announced that rendition will be kept on as US policy — since it seems to work. Not much noise about that, is there? I guess it’s different if it’s the One doing it.
You gotta love the left. Hugo Chavez shoots down protestors in the street. Sean Penn and Danny Glover cannot wait to shake his hand.
U.N. “Peace keepers” sexually abuse starving children. They insist that the U.S. must go to the U.N., for “moral authority”, before deposing a sadistic tyrannt.
Castro imprisons democracy advocates, librarians and other non-violent dissenters. They’re tripping over themselves to kiss his ass.
Every left-wing, anti-American, violent piece of filth becomes a social icon for them. But let one or two terrorists experience a little discomfort in pursuit of securing civilization, and it’s moral outrage time.
Titov, terrorism is not a crime. It’s an act of war.
An interesting tidbit on good old Richard. Years ago, early 80’s actually, I was an actor who did mainly TV commercials (yeah, I know, a real actor wouldn’t do these) along with other assorted acting jobs. As a side job, I used to do security at major Southern Cal. concerts. At one of the Rolling Stones concerts I worked, in L.A., Dreyfuss showed up on stage with about 5 or 6 groupie females, who were draped all over him as he waved to the huge crowd, evidently seeking the adulation of the 60,000 plus in attendance. When he finally had stoked himself enough to leave, he promptly fell approximately 6-7 steps leading down off the stage, right on his face. He appeared to be unconscious, and lay there in a pitiful heap as people rushed to help him. He was obviously loaded to the gills on stage, and this proved to be a little more than his wobbly legs could handle. This was back when he was portraying family values, so it seemed to backfire a tad, I’d say.
Over-inflated egos. They get so totally smitten with themselves that they really start believing how great they think they are. They know deep inside they are just vaudeville entertainers but need to prove their relevance in other places.
A few years ago I asked Drefuss a question about an issue of the time. Intead of just giving his point of view, he looked like a deer caught in th healights and replied “I’ll have to ask my political advisors for an opinion!!!” I couldn’t stop myself from laughing which really pissed him off.
That’s right, not “alleged” torture. It’s a fact as far as this play is concerned.
It isn’t alleged and it is fact.
That’s right, not “alleged” torture. It’s a fact as far as this play is concerned.
Well, it IS a fact that torture is used. Why did John Yoo try to redefine it if it wasn’t?
I bet Richard is wearing Depends during his beddy bye time and is sportin Obama Under-Roo’s during the day. He’s senile by the sounds of it- give the bleeding heart Liberal a break.
I found it very intersting that the ACLU is all up in arms about the Gitmo scum having to give up their 18 hours of sunshine a day if they are sent to Super Max in Colorado( or any other prison). It seems the ACLU says by sending the Gitmo scum to ANY prison will be more torture for them. WOW. So, I guess Gitmo’s jail is not all that bad. SEND THEM TO THE GALLOWS WITHOUT FOOD OR WATER FOR ALL I CARE. They have NO right’s IMO.
To Ted,
Well, again the facts are a problem for you. Please show me where anyone said, “we know where the weapons are!”
Nice try though!
Nice job Barack. About as smart as your namesake, the first Affirmative Action President of the US.
God help us all.
The big question about RD and his missing brain cells is: Is it because of all the coke he snorted back in the 1980s (”I just couldn’t handle the fame that came with winning the Oscar…”) or because he is going senile? I’m voting for the latetr, because the last time I saw a picture of RD, he looked like he could have played one of the aliens in Close Encoyunters, the Special Edition.”
P.S. Richard, I have echoed your Affirmation Action comment about BO elsewhere, because that was exactly what I was thinking after he was elected. Hope you don’t mind.
I haven’t seen anyone mention this but to try a POW is illegal under the Geneva Conventions except under certain limited circumstances. So giving the detainee a trial, if he is a legitimate POW, most likely would be a violation of the Geneva conventions.
Dear Richard, just about everything take has come out of your mouth has been anti-American. Since you are so happy we did away with water boarding, can we use a cattle prod to the testicles of all those practitioners of the religion of peace?
J it is not just stopping going to the movies and support this leftist propaganda machine, what you and everyone here on this blog has to do is support conservative filmmakers. Not just saying it, but by doing it! That means you have to BUY our DVDs because the leftist machine will never allow a conservative film get out there and have life, they either kill it before the release or while it is out there. Conservatives don’t have the resources right now to run with these people.
You want to help fight the liberals then go to http://www.forgottenheroesthemovie.com and buy this DVD and tell everyone you know to buy it. Every DVD sold is a victory for the conservative movement. The time of talking is ended now we fight with our money, that is how they fight with funding. It can only be done by these very small step, one DVD of a small independent film. I am selling them all over the net. Join me in fighting these bastards or nothing and I mean nothing will change.
“I can’t stand up at a cocktail party and gently question the accuracy of such a statement without being inundated with a barrage of ad hominem attacks on my intelligence. If you don’t agree with the premise, you’re just an idiot!”
Last Labor Day, I was at a party of friends where one small group was loudly discussing the latest round of Sarah Palin smears as if they were facts. Finally having enough, I decided to step in and point out that what they claimed as fact were nothing more than Internet rumors. This eventually led to someone asking if I were a “Republican”. When I answered in the affirmative, you should have seen the shock. All this time I had been associating with them and they never new my dark dirty secret.
Obama is going to keep on with rendition and Matt Damon (okay, yeah, I know) says that we should make torture illegal but expect any decent person to do it anyway, to just break the law, because torturing someone is something that any decent person would do in an emergency. Just don’t make it legal.
It was a quote from that link a few days ago.
I figure that our public face and private face should be as much the same as possible, and if there is a difference then we should be more moral and more honorable in *private*. Not the other way around.
I just laugh and laugh as the douchebag politicians in the already-corrupt Obama adminstration continue to reneg on all of their promises. I think it’s Obama who is wearing an earpiece – figuring out which way the wind blows before uh…. uhh… having his, uh, speechwriter write him new, uh flowery promises to make.
The reason the little idiot can not remember his lines is probably due to his consumption of the hollywood candy, cocaine. It is turds like him and many others that keep me from giving the studios my money. I have seen about five movies since 1985 and was not impressed.
I think the rules of war do apply to the Gitmo detainees. That means military trial followed by firing squad. I can live with that.
TEHSTUPID – pull your head out your a$$ and take a breath.
TEHSTUPID – “WE are running the country now, losers. And WE are the majority opinion. So that means YOU do not run around calling people anti-American.”
Spoken like a true facist.
BTW: apt moniker
Anyone else notice how often TEHSTUPID posts? For one of the people running the country now, he sure has a lot of free time. Hey… that could be a new saying on a T-shirt – Liberal: One who would rather post than work. BTW, TEHSTUPID, 52 percent is not a landslide, and it seems you libs have conveniently forgotten that the Librocrat controlled houses of Congress have had lower approval ratings than Bush for at least a year since they gained both houses. Yeah, that’s something to be proud of,I guess, if you’re a lib.
Have a nice day, tehSTUPID.
Confessor
No worries, I think BO’s success is well, self-evident. BTW-BO has been described by the liberals professor as a “Constitutional Law Professor” at the U of C. Nice try.
The guy was a part time lecturer. Funny how we can spin things when we have the press on our side.
PS-If you have access to a scholarly journal Data Base, try to find an article published by the BO. You can’t. In 8 years, this “scholar” wasn’t published.
Hmmmmmm./
I doesn’t surprise that Kevin Spacey (man, what an appropriate last name) is involved with the play; after all, the man’s stupid enough to hang out with a thug like Hugo Chavez. I was surprised that Elizabeth McGovern was in it, though. She hasn’t been in anything of any consequence for so long I figured she died like every other semi-obscure actress of the past 25 years. I am surprised and disappointed that David Suchet is in it, though.

TEHSTUPID – pull your head out your a$$ and take a breath
John B, the PC term would be, TEHSTUPID-pull your head out of your Clinton and take a breath.
Waterboarding+ Moussaui- gorlecki “wall”= no 9/11
I meant to type “It doesn’t surprise me,” unlike Steven Weber, I do at least try to strive to have good grammar.
cruzin – I stand corrected
I certainly don’t want to get in the middle of an intellectual debate over “TEHSTUPID”’s employment status or which party is best characterized as boot-lickers these days (I dare say you can find many more Republicans with a criticism of Pres. Bush than you can find Democrats who would criticize Pres. Clinton or Pres. Obama). I merely step in at this time to make a very important clarification: Neither I nor the editor’s of this page called ANYONE “Anti-American”. The headline refers to the dialogue in the play and the text of the post suggests that the spirit of the play is used to slander and indict our country. Unlike irresponsible left-wing activists and Bush-haters, I do not suggest to know whether someone is anti-American unless they state it outright.
Example: Hugho Chavez: anti-American.
Richard Dreyfuss: I doubt it.
So, I suggest you do not post a straw man retort like: “Who the F are you calling “Anti-American”?!?” until you take an extra moment to realize the object that is being modified in a simple sentence.
Nothing new about liberals being unAmerican to the point of being antiAmerican in their thoughts and actions – just read tehstupid as he is self explanatory.
oh, I forgot to mention that is totally amazing how the liberals have their boy as ruler and they still live by the LIBERAL VITRIOL AND HATE
and liberals whine about being identified as antiAmerican – they are absolute proof positive of their unAmerican ways.
Maybe if TESTUPID really did get a job he would feel better.
Hey, tehstupid, tell us then, what you think about the fact that you guys won–but Obama’s still gonna torture?
Okay, you won, your policies will be law. So why is Obama still going to use torture?
