REVIEW: ‘Tea Party: A Documentary Film’ Leave You Wanting More
by Seth MitchellAs readers of Big Hollywood well know, 2009 was the year of the Tea Party. The masses of racist, xenophobic, rich, white, astro-turfers screamed and yelled at our helpless political leaders while clinging to their over-sized guns…oh, sorry I was just looking at my talking points from Keith Olbermann. Fortunately, for those who have only heard the liberal media’s version of these events, a group of filmmakers decided to follow some of the individuals who became leaders in the Tea Party movement. Tea Party: The Documentary Film is a tightly written and edited documentary that effectively shows the true nature and inspiration of the Tea Party movement and will inspire any red-blooded American to action.
Director Pritchett Cotten creates an effective narrative that shows the basis of this movement is a desire to return our nation to its core Constitutional values. While these grassroots activists have been accused of many vicious motives, the film answers these charges by simply showing the enthusiasm and work of a broad range of men and woman who were moved to political action last year. In doing so, Cotten avoids getting caught in the all-to-easy trap of mud-slinging, and allows these patriots’ tales to dominate the story and thus inspire the audience.
While watching the film I was struck by the fact that so many inside of the movement had never been politically active previous to last year. Jack, a former Democrat, admitted that he basically sat on his couch and complained about Washington, but had finally realized that it was his responsibility to get involved. As he said, “[I] can either be a part of the problem, or part of the solution.”
Fred Shessel, a doctor, follows suit; getting involved in politics when Obama’s healthcare plan threatened a government takeover of his industry. He organized a group of doctors who visited various members of Congress in the days leading up to the 9/12 march, even having an unexpected debate with a group of experts gathered by Rep. John Conyers that was intelligent and respectful (well, until Conyers pulled the racism card).
It is these stories that make the film so powerful. These individuals understand that is our duty as Americans to be informed about the issues facing our nation and to hold our representatives accountable for their decisions. Any reasonable skeptic of the Tea Party movement or political bystander would have a hard time watching this film, and not, at the very least, applaud their fellow Americans for seeking to change the way Washington works.
As the film finished, it left me wanting more. The events of last year are only the beginning of a Constitutional revolution that our country desperately needs. While this journey back to our core values may seem impossible, Tea Party: The Documentary Film shows that propelling this movement forward is as simple as speaking up.

2009 was the Year of the Tea Party.
2010 is the Year the Tea Party Begins to Govern.
Spectacular.
OH MY! A film I can enjoy! THANK YOU!
Wonder if it will get an award???
Perhaps box office reciepts will bury all the right wing propaganda crap! Wouldn't that be SWEET!!!
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
- Samuel Adams
Finally a Documentary worth seeing! God bless America!
Can't wait to read Ebert's review.
You'll have a long wait.
We know how this is going to play out don't we? It will be said on all the MSM that this documentary is only being viewed by other Tea Partiers and make outrageous claims that it is completely biased etc etc….
It's going to be quite amusing but then again, those who could benefit from watching this film, probably won't.
Thanks for posting this. I went to their site and ordered a copy. $25 w/ shipping… I see it as helping, just like political donations. We have to support conservative-minded documentaries and especially constitutional-friendly projects like this. I am looking forward to watching the DVD.
I wonder if this Documentary will get as much attention as BIG AL'S did? Probably not giving the right message to the Hollywierdo's so I dought it. As a matter of fact this is the first I've heard of it.
He'll probably give himself a hand shandy watching it. LOL
Yipster, that's exactly what I did – went and ordered it to: a) remember and reminisce that day in D.C. and; b) support the cause with my $25.
I wont be holding my breath for an Oscar. Good thing I don't give a cr&p what Hollywood thinks.
It's fairly apparent that the Progressive Movement and the DNC has been given all the rope they need.
And now thanks to William Jefferson Clinton and his fatally misguided attack dog, Carville, attempting to undermine the tea party and suffocate its energy the chair is about to be kicked out from underneath them.
It's always about them. The tea party is just one giant spotlight shining on the truth. And they are about the lie. This final assault vis-a-vis a full throttle lead by Custer errrrrr Bubba and his team of vociferous venom spitting hoaxsters will all been done is the great wide open.
Watching POTUS 42 kick the chair out from underneath POTUS 44 and the underlying malfeasance is a day that will live in infamy. You just can't write this stuff w/o it being true.
Will you take the time to edit yourself. Stop being so sloppy.
The Tea Bag heard 'round the world!
Count me in.
"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power." –Thomas Jefferson to William C. Jarvis, 1820.
Then screw 'em. It's time for boots on the ground. We've seen what happens when we worry about the left insulting us by referring to us as racists, sexists and homophobes. We stay politely quiet, while they move into action, and get results.
Is peace so sweet as to be secured at the cost of slavery?
Not a chance.
I hope the Tea Parties do more than replace Democratic idiots with Republican idiots.
I agree with Dave, Dave. Listen to him, take his advice.
I think Republicans are getting the message. The smarter, more far-sighted amongst them are seeing that the American people will richly reward the party of true fiscal responsibility at the ballot box.
I agree Ed, I was in no was suggesting we all sit on our hands peacefully, I'm only pointing out the sad reality.
Some groups are holding "candidates' nights", where candidates for a given office are up for a townhall-style Q&A session. They're then "rated" for conservative values. Gives voters a good idea about who is worth supporting.
To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
-Thomas Jefferson
Awww, thanks for the pep talk, it's been an awfully long cold miserable winter – could make one lazy!
Logic and reason for sure – and my favorite, we know math! BO and is magic math just gets me everytime ~ number do NOT lie.
I think it's ironic that people call Tea Party participants "crazies". The "crazies" are the people who blindly accept what's going on in our country and laugh at the people who are off their couches and doing something about it.
I know, and I'm giving you the half time pep talk to get back in because this game ain't over.
We have one thing the left will never have. Logic and reason. (I know that's two, but they kind of come under the same heading, so work with me here).
Modern liberalism is based on emotions. They want to appeal to soft, squishy, feel good platitudes. Hard to define, easy to dodge, just makes voters feel good about themselves.
We counter with facts. We use reason to explain why the facts are relevant and we refuse to accept their emotional appeal as a defense.
Climategate is Bunker Hill.
Its started.
Now get out there and win this second half!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much better to own another man, and compel him to work for you for nothing, right? Nothing tyrannical about that!
Wo, wo, wo. What's that black guy doing in this movie? Olby keeps telling me there are no blacks and only whites in the Tea Party movement. This trailer must be fake. Or they used CGI to make that guy black.
All great quotes. Well except for that post by joconde. Those kind of people want to make us believe they really don't hate this country, hate the Founding Fathers or hate the Founding Principles.
But they sure do spend a lot of their time bringing up only the NEGATIVE stuff and ignoring the POSITIVE stuff (or even spinning the POSITIVE stuff into something NEGATIVE).
I'm so tired of that meme.
Got my copy just a week or so ago. Can't wait to watch it!
