Karl Rove: Shining a Light in the Wilderness
by Seth MitchellLast Tuesday evening I was privileged to attend a dinner at which Karl Rove was the keynote speaker. The event was put on by the Heritage Foundation, the premiere conservative think tank of Washington, DC, of which I am proud to be a supporting member. While Mr. Rove’s speech covered numerous topics, one point that he made has stuck with me and, I believe, should serve as a light for conservatives as we travel through the political wilderness.
While Mr. Rove has been defined by the media and Hollywood elite as a partisan attack dog and nicknamed forebodingly as “The Architect,” he came off as anything but and emphasized that conservatives should be careful to work with our current president in a respectful manner. When he mentioned President Obama’s name, a few overzealous members of the audience shouted out their less than positive feelings about the man; and Mr. Rove quickly and gently reminded them that our president has made some decisions that conservatives should applaud. From the surge in Afghanistan to military tribunals, Mr. Rove explained that President Obama has taken the right steps in regards to some very important issues that face our nation.
As Mr. Rove stated, “We have to love our country enough that when [President Obama] is right, we are his best and strongest defenders.” After eight years of BDS, conservatives should know better than to reflexively disagree with our current President on every issues just because he has a (D) in front of his name. This does not mean that we must ignore the President when he is wrong, which is his tendency, but rather that we must also, as Rove explained, “disagree with him thoughtfully and carefully.”
The point is that whether or not we agree with those on the other side of the aisle, we must respect our nation enough to treat every issue that we face with careful reasoning, and intelligent discourse. Too often, we forget that these debates are not about political victories but instead, are about finding the best way forward for our nation. As Mr. Rove said, “our country exists and prospers because of values…that have meaning.” By tearing a man down solely because of his political affiliations, win or lose the battle, we are degrading these values and thus our nation. We should honor our past and the fact that the United States was founded by men who put “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” before ego and power.
Americans are exhausted by the continual battles between Republicans and Democrats; as these two parties continue to sling mud back and forth. This is not to say that Americans are looking for bi-partisanship, which usually results in wishy-washy legislation that only panders to voters’ short term happiness. Instead, I believe, that Americans are desperately seeking leaders who will remind them of what makes our country great: the audacity of the human spirit to accomplish great things when released from the grip of oppressive government; the need to sacrifice in order to protect our great tradition of liberty, and the duty we have to help our neighbor instead of relying on our government to do so. If we, as conservatives, base our message on these values, we will give Americans a true message of hope that is based in the values of our past, but that will also lead us to our future.

Playa Wannabee!!!!
No, your utter idiocy makes you a lower life form. I am also sure that you don't get the same message we higher life forms do, only it's because you are so "LIBERAL"(close-minded) that your feeble gray matter is incapable of unraveling the secret code from a box of Cracker Jacks(yummy). If you consider yourself a "regular" person there are alot of people out there who would rather consider theirselves to be "lunatics". Good luck with your glorious comeback, libtard.
George Bush and Karl Rove were in it just for themselves. They pretty much destroyed the Republican party in eight short years and they know it. Have they lost any sleep over it? Doubtful. Yet, there's always talk that we're going to get Jeb shoved down our throat during the next campaign cycle. Please! Enough with the clans.
Rove should twaddle off to some ranch just like W did. We'd all be better off for it. Mind numbing that a man whose policies laid all the mastic for the tile workers of Obama's Socialist Workers of America to just waltz in and take over industries while we are sleeping is STILL seen by many supposed "conservatives" as some sort of beacon of hope. It's all about Karl and trying to restore cred to W's legacy.
The Republicans need a ball-bustin', mean- as-shit Howard Dean type to weed out the weak-kneed.
We don't have one and that's why all we can do these days is pray that we get a blue-dog Democrat to vote for our side every now and then.
I love Karl Rove and subscribe to his articles, but I don't think Americans are sick of debate. I'm spoiling for it. Yay when Obama does something right, but more often than not he doesn't. I'm all for agitation and keeping the issues up front and center until we can vote this guy out. I'm soooo not ready to make nice.
Thats' why I say we fight back _when necessary_… Yes, he's right <1% of the time… but that's 1% we don't have to fight… yes, it leaves 99% to fight, but if we can win the llttle wars.
Note that I never said we should compromise with him… make him compromise with those of us on the conservative side of the spectrum.
Karl's speech should 'serve as a light for conservatives as we travel through the political wilderness.' Really? The 'political wilderness' that you speak of is actually a master planned political community called an oligarchy. These radicals in power are howling at Karl's softspoken, take the high-road, non-confrontational dialogues. Every time I read articles like these, I just keep thinking that McPain took this same path in his 'debates' against Barry, and I believe a whole bunch of conservatives like myself were screaming at the tv to fight the heck back at the egomaniacal Senator (origin unknown) bankrolled by the Chicago machine, and George Soros. And lookie who won the election? Conservatives don't need lectures from Karl, they need leaders who articulate strongly this country's sovereignty, and the truth about the marxists' agenda being rammed down our throats and deep into our pocketbooks! Bush dropped the ball in so many ways (did NOT close the borders in 8!!! years, NEVER defended himself..), should we thank Karl?
You are all insane kool aid drinkers. Rove's advice lead to the biggest policy disasters in a generation. I hope all of you idiots heaping praise on Rove and his ilk realize you are only trying to convince yourselves you weren't used by Karl and his cronies. Its a great thing idiots like you were exposed for what you are and will not see another president of your choosing for 2 or 3 more decades.
My dislike for the Bush administration and it's policies is without bound, but I'll always like Karl Rove.
It strikes me that he IS every bit the scheming, amoral manipulator he's painted as, but in his background and in the mischevious gleam of his eyes I sense a profound undercurrent of "revenge of the nerd" powering his formidable psyche – an undercurrent I can both relate to and respect.
RIGHT ON WOMAN!!!!!! You sure no the way to a REAL man's heart!!!!
You touched me…..SPOT ON!!!
*This comment is not necessarily directed solely to Mark S.
For me, Obama has been either partially right, (because he listened to a former Bush aid), or right with conditions. Todays example would be, he wanted to send more troops to Afghanistan, but tells our forces via Jones that we do not have their backs if they need more troops, or help to fulfill the mission. "Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot" was what Jones said. The message sent was I am going to drop a bunch of you off in Afghanistan, and after that screw you!
When someone figures out what Obama's foreign policy is would you please get back to me because so far all I have seen is love dictators, hate our allies. I shudder to think what is going to come out of the meetings with Putin. Which just as an added FYI, it has been reported Russia is wanting back in force in Africa. Swell. Just when our CIA the weakest, and Israel has been alienated. Everyone wave good-bye to the Mossad intelligence we needed. Please God let Obama leave the Africa Command intact, or expand it!
Uh, as for the economy, 10% unemployment, (really closer to 13%), is the highest in 26 years. In my best Sgt. Shultz voice, "I see nothing!" which inspires me to have confidence in this Administration other than doom.
Death Star Care! Now there is something for you if you are 21! Because at 50 they plan on shooting you! Yeah! I have 7 more years to live! Whoopie!
When in the past 10 years have we seen Democrats compromise? When? Their version of bi-partisanship is when WE compromise OUR ideals, and go over to THEIR side of the aisle. When we had control of Congress and Newt was hammering Clinton; that my friends was compromise. What part of compromise does Obama get? Hmmmm? He has shut out the Republicans, and has repeated this mantra, "I WON!" Insert Obama giving us a raspberry here!
I get what Karl was saying, and I have tremendous respect for him. I think he is an asset to the GOP, and I listen to every word he says. BUTT MONKEY ALERT- Not in this. Not in the sense that we are currently at milk toast stage in American politics. We are at Def Con 8. We have an entire university system which has produced snot nosed kids who could not tell you what the first 5 lines in the Declaration of Independence was. Heck for that matter, you have a woman named Bass in CA who wonders why talk radio is allowed to exist because SHE thinks free speech is a form of terrorism. And SHE is definitely closer to 50. My own sister asked me what the Federal Reserve was. Face palm moment. Child was a product of public eduction in the 70's.
The nation is not at "compromise" status. Karl thinks because there is such a loud cry from Conservatives over Obama that it is a version of BDS. Most Conservatives are far too intelligent to remotely resemble the muck from the Left who have BDS. We are screaming at the top of our lungs at Obama, and his Administration because there are 25 czars, the Constitution is being shredded, contract law has been burned, and innocent citizens and military members have been labeled as "terrorist". Yeah, the word which we cannot call those people who want to kill all of us.
One ringah-dingy, two ringah-dingy to the "compromise" crowd, the smokey smell you are smelling is you, everything you own, and your country. Would you please get out of my way because I need to take back the country in the name of the Founding Fathers. Thanks!
But yal keep that compromise avenue open. Wink, wink!
Michelle's response to the hungry, let them bask in my glow! She would not even offer cake.
Senator DeMint- he is awesome.
Sharpton/McKinney a.k.a Cpt. Crazy hair now in Israeli prison. Just so they could claim a minority and a minority sex. Double whammy. Joey B could still write the speeches!
Now, I'm touched! Thank you!
Tell it like it is!
I thank you sir…
Oh, advice from a Marxist myrmidon hmmm… no thanks! I guess you didn’t read the responses to the post, but not anymore comrade, we're in the mood for a fight. You had better get your parasites up for it in 2010 because the people that pay the freight are pissed like I’ve never seen in fifty years, and just like 64, 80 and 94 we’re going to set things straight for keeps. You enjoy your “hope and change” while you can comrade, you may yet have to get a job.
I love Rove. A true Patriot.
Hey Idiot, that's led, not lead, D'uh.
a saying every current and former military member knows:
Lead, Follow, or get out of the way!
cool! I'll stock up on stickin needles.
