I have to laugh at the poster fretting that Clint was going to be working with Matt Damon who is "so Hollywood with his liberal bantering" or some such.

You haved noted that Clint has directed films with such BigHollywood Disapproved Actors as:

John Cusack - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Sean Penn - Mystic River
Tim Robbins - Mystic River
Charlie Sheen - The Rookie

Or do you guys pretend that those movies don't exist, so you won't have to "boycott" Clint as well.

I have to agree that John Wayne was a "Big" man. Once in Pensacola, Fl. when I was 12 years old my two older sisters and I slipped into the motel where John and Maureen O'Harah and the main cast of "Wings of Eagles" were staying. My sisters were too embarrassed to confront any of the stars for an autograph so I was chosen. I went into the private dinning room where they were all eating by way of the kitchen and as I walked out through the swinging doors of the kitchen I stood looking at John Wayne sitting at the head of a very long table. He turned towards me and said "Come here little fellow". He put me on his left knee facing Maureen and signed a matchbook cover for me. The table had Chill Wills, Dan Dailey and so many others. He could have yelled at me, deservedly so, but instead acted like the true gentleman he was.

I'm not sure of his last picture or broadway performance, but I would like to mention, Yul Brynner. I've always liked him, and he was great in "The King and I".

Slight correction to Willik, who wrote: "Please forgive my picking the fly dung out of the pepper but In “The Shootist” (with Opie and Lauren Bacall BTW) Mr. Wayne’s character was named “Books” not Brooks as reported. Also, the Lemmon role in “…Morrie” was “Mitch Albom” and not “Album” as written. Otherwise an enjoyable read. Thanks."

Jack Lemmon played Professor Morrie Schwartz in "Tuesdays"; Hank Azaria played Mitch.

Nice catch on the "Album" error (or errur). Incidentally, one of Mitch's first books was called "The White Albom."

Peter Sellars in Being There. His second-last film, I think -- should of been his last.

I would also add Randolph Scott in Ride The High Country. That was an excellent final appearance for a vastly underappreciated western movie icon.

Great post. I only take exception to your diss of Sinatra's turn in the Magnum PI show. It was classic tough guy Frank, committed to a higher calling as Sgt. Doheny, who sought justice for the horrible murder of his grandaughter. That character did it his way, and Tom Selleck and Don Bellisario clearly gave him all the time and space necessary, to craft one last take.

I do admit that he was scheduled for an appearance in the next and final season of Magnum, but this one was just fine as it was.
