Lonewolf Diaries: Leftists Hate Your Right to Free Speech
by Steven Crowder
I know, I know, at first glance, the title may seem like I’m blowing things out of proportion. After all, Fox News is an isolated incident, right? Wrong. This is just another leg in a multi-pronged approach from the Obama administration to stifle dissent. (I just used some big words — which is out of character, I know — but go with me on this one.) Am I the only one who sees this as a wind of attacks looking to ultimately culminate into a “Fairness Doctrine” storm?
- “Those forwarding falsehoods against the health care bill” must be reported.
- “’Racists’ must be silenced.”
- “Opinion journalism masquerading as news” must not be given legitimacy, or equal access.
- David Axelrod: “We won’t treat Fox News that way, and you ought not treat them that way.”
This was the administration’s equivalent to the schoolyard bully’s call for a “PILE ON!!”
Now when observed on their own, these incidents would seem inconsequential. When combined, however, one can see a pattern of attack coming from the left that I believe (hopefully, without sounding all crazy and conspiracy theorist-like) will result in the Fairness Doctrine rearing its ugly head again. I spoke about it on “Hannity” a while back, and my opinion has only been reinforced by the most recent relentless (albeit pathetic) attack on the press.
The truth is that this White House does not want to hear ANY voices other than the echo of their own timber. It’s why Obama hasn’t met with Republicans as promised, why they’ve tried to marginalize the Tea Party movement and why they’re attacking Fox News.
This White House, is creating a villain. If they don’t pass their health-care bill, they want to be able to point to the “liars” who spread the “misinformation” that ultimately led to its downfall. Right now, the villain is Fox News. Ultimately however, YOU will be the one who is targeted. Yes folks, in all reality it is “you” who are the “liars.”
Sure, we all know that this administration is systematically attempting to target and silence voices of opposition, but we have to ask ourselves, why?
As approval ratings come in, a realization is becoming painfully clear: Leftists are diametrically opposed to the views of mainstream America. But they can’t change who they are … however, they can change how you perceive them. This is why leftists run as centrists and hide their true identity while conservatives proudly shine a light on what they stand for.
Remember folks, “net neutrality” is just around the corner and the Fairness Doctrine will most likely soon follow. We’ve all got to be aware of what’s being played here. There is some good to come of this: All this fear coming from Washington D.C. means one thing… It means that we’re doing something right. Our voices have become too loud to ignore, and so they’re snapping back. History, however, has taught us that snapping back at the American people…? Not the smartest route.
I genuinely want to know what you folks think. Do you think the backfiring of the White House’s attack on Fox News is a sign of things to come? Do you think they’re going to overplay their hand here and dig their own grave? Did Sean Penn really deserve the Oscar for “Mystic River,” or was it a consolation prize for getting snubbed with “I Am Sam”?
As always, I want to hear from you, because the more we talk, the angrier they get.
Dissent… It’s a good thing.

After all, Fox News is an isolated incident, right?
What has Fox been prevented from doing?
Right on Steven – as usual you nail it. Your clarity of thought is fantastic for such a young pup. Since the male brain is not fully developed until age 25, always question a young person's age. I digress. You are SPOT ON! The Obama Admin is saying, "Look up here," while the try to pull the rug out from under the American people. I'm not buying ANY of it. They are thieves and thugs. The more people know, the better chance we have. I call Barack Obama, "Jimmy Carter on steroids."
An Oscar for "I Am Sam"?! Are you kidding me? Everyone knows, you never go full-on retard.
Fox News has been prevented from doing nothing except losing ratings. That is not the point.
The point is the PATTERN:
1. The SnitchOnYurNeighbor Web Site.
2. The NEA artist recruitments.
3. The slamming of Fox News.
4. The Humana gag order.
There is more. Ask yourself what types of governments try to control media and thought?
Fox News has been CALLED out by the White House. The White House even tried to exclude them from the W.H. Press Pool interview with one of the EXALTED czars! They almost got away with it until the Pool staged a coup; the W.H. backed down and let Fox News in.
Communist / Fascist / Marxist (no, not Groucho)
I think Repubs are going to RACE to the polls in 2010. BO and company get creepier every day. I think it will backfire them but since BO and company are incapable of self reflection there is a lot more to come.
Fascism: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.
Remove race and nation from the definition, ultimately it is inconsequential, and what you have is the political ideology of the left/democrats. Obama’s behavior thus far has been that of intimidation, legislative retaliation and an unconstitutional deconstruction of our free market capitalist system. In its place we have ever increasing centralized control from the federal govt, the key component to fascism, with an assault on dissent and opposition, which is required in fascist states to maintain a systematic propagandizing of the populace. This of course is being carried out by the obama's lapdogs in the leftwing media: cnn, msnbc, cbs, abc, nbc.
If the Founding Fathers were alive today they would overthrow this govt. Jefferson himself would’ve hanged Obama for treason and illegitimately usurping power.
"There is some good to come of this: All this fear coming from Washington D.C. means one thing… It means that we’re doing something right."
Your column is on target, and the lifted quote exudes genuine American hope.
And now "net neutrality." I wonder how long all y'all will be able to post?
It has been hindered in going about the lawful business of shining lights into dark corners of no-longer smoke filled rooms, being forced to respond to declarations from the Administration of "Opinion journalism masquerading as news” must not be given legitimacy", an impediment with which the New York Times, for instance, has never had to trouble itself, although staffed with exactly the same kind of polemicists and bloviators.
Um, SubGrav, there was that "banned from the White House press pool" moment, remember? But I'm sure you would have stuck up for them, LOL! Hey, SubGrav, while you're here, maybe you could explain why Chicago LibDems are asking residents to rat out their neighbors on tax cheats, and why HuffPo Lefties are now asking their readers to dig up any dirt they can find on the Chamber of Commerce?
Throw in that flag@whitehouse.gov thing, and it begs a question: are all you Lefties just a bunch of squealing Stalinist Kommissar rats at heart? Don't answer, it's a rhetorical question. Of course you are
I'm not sure if that answers all your questions, Steve C, but I'm sure it explains a lot!
Don't worry, the White House is monitoring us. Can't wait until they show up to arrest me.
The White House even tried to exclude them from the W.H. Press Pool interview with one of the EXALTED czars! They almost got away with it until the Pool staged a coup; the W.H. backed down and let Fox News in.
That's false.
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/10/wh-wer...
dissent will not be tolerated…
That is the coda for this bunch. Disagreement- with The One is apostasy. And the militant tyke, the foul mouthed former ballet dancer rahm Emanuel will engineer a smackdown of all who cross them.
Like Sean Connery's Jimmy Malone said- "It's the Chicago way"…
As residents of the aforementioned metropolis we apologize deeply for what we have wrought upon an unsuspecting public…
This administrations conduct has been childish and petty.
Prepare to deploy the ATOMIC WEDGIE!!
Hey Steven, I heard Sean Hannity mention your name today.
of course the left hates your right to free speech. what can't be converted, must be controlled.
the fairness doctrine, will be a step to control what can't be converted.
the people will rise, as they are rising now to take back what is theirs.
when something is outlawed, people will find a way to get it, and a new black market will arise. which will be capitalism at it's best, providing what people want, without the interference of the government. America at it's best.
the spineless sheep will be led to their slaughter, becoming ever more dependent on the government teat. whatever will they do when the milk dries up?
Negative, Ghostrider. Try: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/10/24/fox-ex...
Oh, wait. Fox MUST be lying. Yeah, that's it. They are lying. Wait, all of their noses look bigger. I have some swamp land for sale; looks good on paper… Send me your money; I know JUST the investment. Under Bernie Madoff's name; don't worry, he's not running the place any more.
the "thumbs down troll" must be back..I put them back though.
You kind of have to feel sorry for people who get a "secret" pleasure out of something so petty as thumbing someone down on a blog.
No worries — they can think what they want. Just don't EVER try to make me think differently. I have a brain, and I'm not afraid to use it.
"This is why leftists run as centrists "
While this is true, a lot of Republicans also run as conservatives and move to the left once elected. Imagine how much better off we'd be if the Democrats remained centrists and the Republicans remained conservatives.
but one branch of government has sat back and let the other two go wrecklesly out of control. when is the judicial branch going to wake up, and slap down the other two? come on walter williams always points out all of the unconstitutional spending, now we see the overbearing attempts from the executive. when are they going to reinforce the constitution?
He was acting in that movie?
Oh, wait. Fox MUST be lying.
Guy, they've had their lawyers argue in court that FCC guidelines on accuracy in news are non-binding.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Akre
Left: "Of course we support the First Amendment and the right to free speech. Except, of course, hate speech."
Right: "What is hate speech?"
Left: "Whatever we say it is."
Guyette, if you have evidence that suggests that Fox News is NOT being truthful, by all means, produce it. Until then, you go ahead and watch MSNBC. I, on the other hand, will watch Fox every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Don't try to serve me Cool Aid; I ain't drinking and never will.
How about: http://www.examiner.com/x-22564-Des-Moines-Conser...
"The Obama administration has used its heaviest hitters to attack Fox News. The President's top two advisors tried to bully ABC and CNN into not following up on stories first reported by Fox. The networks pushed back when the White House tried to exclude Fox from network pool coverage. Then, when the Obama administration lied and claimed they did not try to block FNC, CBS News exposed their fraud."
How about: http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/zon...
They ALL must be lying. NOT!!!
Guyette, if you have evidence that suggests that Fox News is NOT being truthful, by all means, produce it.
I did that. You want more?
Finally, even liberal CBS went with this: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/23/evening...
"And the White House has gone beyond words, reports CBS News senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield. Last Sept. 20, the president went on every Sunday news show – except Chris Wallace's show on FOX. And on Thursday, the Treasury Department tried to exclude FOX News from pool coverage of interviews with a key official. It backed down after strong protests from the press."
You did nothing of the kind. CBS, Fox, the Examiner, all reported that what you claim is BS.
Feel free to explain why I should pay attention to the Des Moines Conservative. Did he phone anybody about it?
Are you seriously citing Wikipedia as a reliable source when you're getting into a debate over accuracy? Oh, the irony.

Of course they're not lying – they work with the information they get, which may be from Fox. But Fox certainly lies. It's what they're there for.
I think this coming Tuesday will foretell a lot about the 2010 Elections, NJ & VA Govenors, along with the NY 23rd all going to Conservatives. Should be a good evening.
Ok, how about Fox News, CBS, and the Baltimore Sun. Want more?
More; the left-wing LA Times: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-f...
"On Thursday, the Washington bureau chiefs of the networks balked when the Treasury Department sought to exclude Fox from a series of interviews with executive pay czar Kenneth Feinberg that was being filmed with a pool camera. The bureau chiefs insisted that Fox be included because it was part of the five-network pool, said CBS bureau chief Christopher Isham. "There was no debate," he said."
They reported Fox's claims, which were BS. A few phone calls from real reporters cleared it all up: Fox hadn't requested the interview, guys in the pool crew said they should be included, so they were added to something they'd forgotten to sign up for.
And then they lied about it.
I'm gonna have to come out and say that net neutrality, at least, is a good thing. It's the only way we can keep the internet as we know it–otherwise your ISP might decide to do something like charge you extra for going to sites like Fox News or PJTV, while streaming CNN for free. Keep in mind that Time-Warner OWNS CNN and MSNBC, then guess whose views would be easiest to access if they control all the pipes.
I'm right with you on everything else, though.
I'm not citing Wikipedia as a source, I'm giving you the means to source it. Should I have written "New World Communs. of Tampa, Inc. v. Akre" and told you to go Google it? Because, you know, you can do that if you're able.
You're exactly right — it's getting creepy.
Clincher for me was in June: Obama went out of his way to give total support for the Honduras Marxist dictator wannabe, and Hugo Chavez protege Zelaya, over the constitutional government that threw Zelaya out.
This is the Latin America model… tell the gullible what they want to hear while you confiscate private property and silence critics. It's Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Argentina all over again.
How now Mao?
Yup, even this article is lying, NOT: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/tipping-point-white-ho...
Source for the phone calls you claim? I want verification not someone speculation. Fox News verifies it reporting.
Gee, like your sourcing Fox news about Fox not lying, this article sourcing Fox news is unconvincing.
And of course with the Government involved, nothing could go wrong….right? I've heard this argument eviscerated and can't imagine this Congress passing anything that didn't have some built in bias to the Left. The single most partisan Congress in my lifetime.
"Substance", huh? Please. I can find an article that says anything I want it to on Wikipedia. Let the guy play his ping-pong, Drew; no point arguing on the Internet. At the end of the day we're all still watching Fox, so he loses.
I gave it out as my first link. Enjoy!
One of my problems with net neutrality is who would be controlling it. The FCC has already expressed an interest in the Fairness Doctrine and we've seen what the government think free speech is. These are the people who would be in charge of determining 'neutrality" and I don't for one second believe they wouldn't manipulate the system to shut out people like us. At least the actual ISP's have to consider some level of economic impact in marginalizing certain portions of the internet. The government has no such concern.
Agreed. I'll watch Fox News. I know they are working to get at the truth. The other "news" organizations are Cool Aid drinkers. I have no time for them anymore. Well, maybe CBS; they had the balls to skirt the truth about the Fox press pool fiasco.
Substance Abuser McCheese,
Sir or Ma'am, or being? Whatever… You can also source serious people, who make calls and send reports who will tell you (1) the Earth is flat (2) Al Gore invented the internet (3) 9/11 was all special effects and coverup to trump up a war… But I suspect you already know that, and are a firm believer in all of these "Truths" a on sweet annocent Islamists, and nothing will besmirch your faith in the accuracy of these reports. I'm not going to even try to change your minds.
I think the wornderfulness of America is that you are free to believe all that crap and whatever the voices in your head tell you to believe. And I support that right!
Have a great day!
Again, go back and read the link. It's just false. We've certainly seen news organizations run with that. Find any Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq?
So you're quoting a 4 day old report (that just quotes the White House without question) to debunk all the stories from Fox, CBS, and dozens of other sources? You're also ignoring the obvious problem that if it hadn't happened, it would have been the headline story on MSNBC and CNN on every opinion program.
Maybe you should stick to Wikipedia for your "facts."
hey, cutie crowder–
i think the white house is doing magic tricks along the lines of: look here, i am making a coin disappear! (while the other hand is pulling a scarf out of a hat.) in other words: misdirection of the highest order IN ORDER to distract us from noticing while president o and congress try to enact massive, expensive and radical agenda items. health care, cap and trade, etc, etc. when fox publicly exposed wh whack-job associations (ACORN) and radical wh appointees (van jones, dunn, et al) something had to give. enter the great scapegoat: fox news, the only network that shows any real dissent to the president and his agenda. no secret what's going on there…
Im not going silently into tyranny. They can drag me kicking and screaming into that gulag…i mean re-education camp…i mean "volunteer center"…yeaa…
"Talking Points Memo"?? Man, that's your daily affirmations resource so you don't have to overburden your brain with original thought. "Substance"? More like cotton candy.
Drew…his/her link is Talking Points Memo for cripe's sake…substance is a parrot.
There's nothing controversial in this column, Steven. The Dems have already demonized the people who attended Tea Party rallies and town halls. They've called them everything from racists to angry mobs to Nazis (and Nancy Pelosi even cried about how mean everyone was being). Anyone who thinks that they've already gone as far as they are willing to go is just flat out gullible. They are going to try to make people embarrassed to be associated with any group who criticizes this administration. That's why so many on the Left use a derogatory sexual reference to describe them. They're hoping people are so gutless they'll walk away rather than be called names.
“’Racists’ must be silenced.” First of all is this an actual quote from someone, or are you just making it up and putting quotes around it? Secondly, I guess you are defending racists, well, ok at least that's straightforward of you.
“Opinion journalism masquerading as news” must not be given legitimacy.
That seems like a defensible statement to me, are you saying that it is ok to blur the line between opinion and news?
the attack on conservative talk radio happened before the attack on Fox. hell, my young kids were called racists because our family supported McCain, so this sh** has been going on since before the election — and it's personal — I DARE them to try to silence us. The gloves are ALREADY OFF as far as I'm concerned and if my kids are going to be attacked in an Obama-world, then I have nothing to lose personally. And I'm just one citizen who happens to believe that Fox and conservative talk and tea partiers and townhallers can't be wrong about everything — so bring I say bring it on! It only hurts Obama, his creepy web of lefties, and the evil lefty democrats. They are out in 2010 and 2012. OUT!!!!!!!! END OF AN ERROR!! they will forced back to the slimy fringe where they belong. and it will be a LONG time before they fool America again — in fact, I see this as the death of 60s style social justice corruption, the end of the two party system, and definately the end of Marxism in America.
Bravo, Des. Could not have said it any better.
Am I the only one wondering if he actually works for them and is trying to get traffic to the lame web site? There are reasons why I never click on web links from a message board.
Hey, Substance. Why has NOT all the other news agencies (MSNBC, CBS, ABC, CNN) called Fox News out for the "fabrication" and "lie" about how they were excluded from the press pool?
Good observation, Des!
So you're quoting a 4 day old report (that just quotes the White House without question)
You obviously haven't read it. I'm impressed at your faith in the MSM, but you know, sometimes they get it wrong.
OK, so there is one newspaper source listed on that page. However, in this conversation, you have discounted at least 3 of Drew's media sources becuase they could be lying. Why is that one source so reliable? The other two sources on that Wikipedia page are bogus. Jane Akre works at one of the groups linked to while the other is a wiki-style (unreliable) website. Anyway, I fail to see how that fact effects the veracity of the story of Fox being locked out.
CBS is part of the press pool is it not? And they are being beaten miserably in many rating by FOX. Not only does CBS have a vested interest in calling out FOX lies, they would have been in a position to know the truth. If you're saying all of these news organizations are too stupid to do their own reporting, then it seems like you've circled around to the reason FOX is being criticized in the first place. For being independent.
SWAAAUUUK! Read my link! SWAAUUUK! Read my link!
Drew, you're getting into it with the guy from the Monty Python argument sketch. All clear now?
Mystic River was a damn good read…a number of decent actors could have scored the oscar playing Jimmy Markum. Penn just lucked out.
we will need to drag all of them toward the right to restore balance — the current moderate dems should be the extreme left, the middle should be occupied by right leaning dems and left leaning repubs, and the moderate right should be the bulk of the Repubs (center right). and the conservatives should make the true right while "no government" extremists should occupy the fringe right and kooky socialist dems like Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and friends should be the fringe left (and commies like Sean Penn and half of hollywood and most of Obama's advisors should be bannished as traitors and anti-government anarchists from the extreme right should be kept in check as well)
Righto! I want to have an argument. Reply: No you don't!
NoSubNoGrav, Obama is tanking, LibDems are tanking, FOX and Rush's ratings are all up, conservatism is on the rise, and three LibDem candidates are about to get their asses handed to them like hats. Oh, and LibDems are a bunch of crybabies who could dish it out during Bush's term but can't take it now. Oh, and you're all a bunch of squealing Stalinist rats. That's about it
I saw it was four days old and quoted a White House source (along with an "unnamed source" on the inside). The amount of news that has contradicted this since then makes your believing a four day old story a joke. I also noticed you haven't tried to explain why no one on CNN, MSNBC or any other network has claimed they didn't defend Fox in the situation. Funny how the only on the record comment comes from CBS, who backs up Fox's story. Must be some kind of Right-wing conspiracy, I suppose. {sigh}
Whether Fox has or has not been prevented form doing something is beside the point. The point is that this administration KEEPS TRYING to stop people from speaking out.
Fox is the most public example but you have the Fairness Doctrine groupies in the FCC, dissent = racism losers on MSNBC, "people need to quit listening to Rush Limbaugh", the thousands of Tea Partiers who "weren't representative of the American people", and the list goes on.
The active interference in free speech is the problem. I don't care if Obama doesn't want to come on Fox's shows. He, like every other president, has the right to make those decisions, however immature I might think them. However, telling other people that they shouldn't listen to FOX, or Rush, or Humana, or anyone else is the problem. Especially coming as these denouncements did on the heels of several painful blows to Democratic and White House credibility.
Everybody get a short-wave radio. Learn to operate it. We may not have until 2010
Everytime I see "Talking Points…" in a posted web link, yellow post it notes on a run down harvest gold refrigerator in a drafty, roach infested, walk up comes to mind…what's that I hear? Vintage Band Aid greatest hits from a boom box featuring a dual cassette player?
I can see potential for abuse when you put it that way. But as a pure concept, net neutrality is a win for everyone.
It would be interesting if they required everyone to link to a competing viewpoint on their blogs, though. I'd like to see the White House have to link to Al Qaeda so we can consider their opinions more carefully before deciding.
So, yeah, the concept of net neutrality is great. I wouldn't put it past Obama to try to screw it up, though.
They don't need anyone to drive traffic for them. They do news. This site has Victoria Jackson wondering if Obama is Hitler.
Johhny Depp should have won the Oscar for his portrayal of Jack Sparrow. Everybody knows that.
Term Limits —
One term in Office; One term in Jail
Shouting obscenities his neighbors hear as garbled rantings through their paper thin walls, he frantically types in Moveon.org, only to find his CPU is frozen as his cursor spirals round and round, occasionally slowing down as if to taunt him. Damnit, he growls, as spittle lands on his monitor…if only he come up with a retort all his own….
A HAM radio, you mean, right?
Down boy! I have finally admitted to myself that this last year has felt like domestic terrorism — middle America/ middle class have lost our property values… why? because of social engineering like the community reinvestment act which Obama endorsed 100% and perpetuated with his entire being — they bullied banks into making bad loans and that set off the sub-prime and gov't backed mortgage trend. Barney Frank blocked Republican attempts to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — that regulation could have stopped the housing crisis, but now, Barney jokes about it and actually is EXPANDING the very same gov't-back housing program.
I would like heads to roll, but those very heads are in control. They have lined their pockets with money from the corruption and now conveniently blame wall street — it's all a sham. just like Obama. Middle America has lost their jobs on top of the housing crisis and I personally can't take much more of the terror this administration is practicing on the American people. If we can't stop them through elections in 2010 and 2012, I hate to think of what they will do next. I like to think 2010 and 2012 will be the beginning of the end for outdated and corrupt social justice entitlement scams, communism and Marxism, and weak Republicans, maybe even the end of the two-party system in America. Hope and Change we can believe in!!!!
Anyway, I fail to see how that fact effects the veracity of the story of Fox being locked out.
I salute you, for this is indeed correct. The case does, however, establish that Fox will fight for the right to distort news. Yeah, I checked Wikipedia's sourcing and it sucked, but the case is a real one and Jane Akre was fired for not distorting the news.
Independence I have no problem with. But yeah, I'm pretty sure Jeff Greenfield didn't do his homework. Not everybody does. And the site I linked to has played a pretty important role in the last few years in bringing a lot of things to the attention of the press. Because they follow up.
Simpson's just mad because he hasn't gotten to say HITLER enough lately. He called for his readers to visit my site and give me what for – for which I thank him! – and oddly enough there was no difference whatsoever in my traffic.
Last declassified report and news I heard on it (about 2 years ago) we had found over 500 WMD devices, though no new program stuff. Most were too degraded to use, some were usable in a limitied capacity, and some were still usable at full capacity.
Whether Fox has or has not been prevented form doing something is beside the point. The point is that this administration KEEPS TRYING to stop people from speaking out.
I don't see an example of this. The pool feed issue was one of Fox's own making – and if they ran with it good for them, that's what they do – but again I don't see anyone trying to keep people silent. Even the dreaded Fairness Doctrine – a real long shot – doesn't prevent free speech. Neither does saying that people need to quit listening to this or that.

Yeah, I remember that. What WMD there was was accounted for by UN agencies in advance of the conflict.
Incidentally, here's a somewhat unclear account of Jane Akre losing her lawsuit because FCC guidelines about not distorting the news weren't interpreted as law.
