Anyone who has watched the game-show “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader” can see how little of the content knowledge covered in school actually gets learned in any meaningful way. So what were we learning that whole time? What were we doing squandering our youth in stuffy classrooms, when we could have been enjoying our short and precious youth?

Einstein once said: “Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school.” So what is school for? That is for each person to answer for themselves. At worst it has taught us to be dependent on schools to learn. It has placed an invisible monopoly on learning. Without school there is no meaningful learning. Academia is sacred, anything else is marginal. It has driven this notion so deep that it is difficult for most people to learn without a proper context.

#1) Private school teachers are not licensed teachers.
#2) Private schools do better because A) they have smaller class sizes, B) students with behavior issues can be asked to leave the school or kicked out and C) requires a tuition from the parent, thus a commitment to education.
#3) Private schools are also allowed to teach religion and any dogma that fits their agenda.
#4) If you give everyone a voucher to go to a private school you will do the following: A) Require some sort of licensing of teachers in Private schools since government money can't pay for a teacher that hasn't passed some sort of rigorous training program. B) You won't be allowed to remove students with undesirable behaviors C) you won't be allowed to teach religion or other dogmas D) and there will STILL be students going to public schools.

It is amazing that this argument continues to this day - giving vouchers won't solve the problems. In fact it creates a whole new host of problems. You all think there is some sort of magic wand and people on the left are stopping you from using it.

If everyone get's vouchers - what makes it different than the system we have now? Has anyone asked Private Schools if they WANT the dregs of society sending their kids into the schools?

The system is broken indeed, but it goes far deeper than bashing teachers and administrators. The problems start at home. Teachers don't turn your kid stupid - they come that way. Teachers attempt to make them smart you fools. And if they can't? maybe your kids is just stupid.

Wow. As a public school teacher I can only say that I am glad you left the profession. There is very little in your post, except insight into why you possibly didn't make a good teacher to begin with.

There is nothing here except emotional vitriol. Facts? Show me them. Opinions are like......well you know the rest and everyone certainly has one.

ED:

Your statistics are scary because they are bogus. BHS doesn't have 1600 in the entire 9-12 grades.

"Spending has increased while graduation rates are the same" Did you account for inflation?

The reason students aren't achieving is because they're not being worked with at home. Curling up with mom and a glass of milk? Ha. More like the remote and box of Kraft Ready Mac.

Most parents I know would be happy with a lengthened school day simply because it would reduce their after school childcare costs.

i disagree that private schools are better than public schools. Working at a private schools myself, i know. Private schools sees the whole thing as a business, and they are very limited in resources that can help the child. For instance, a child was held back because of her inability to communicate in english. but will the school provide an esl teacher for her that will cost nothing to the parents? no, they advised the parents of the girl to either send her to a public school or get their own english tutor. not only do private schools not provide esl programs, but programs for those with special needs. this school, which is a mix of elementary and middle schoolers, i'm working at doesn't even have a proper library or COUNSELOR!! btw, the text books are hand me downs from public schools because it's too damn expensive to buy new ones, seeing as they have no funding from the government to help them. one coworker of mine talked to one of the 3rd grade teachers to see if her public school child was up to par with them, and found that her child was ahead of what the private school kids were learning! and don't get me started on how disgustingly lenient they are on discipline. money hungry bosses who care more about the numbers than the quality, the prinicipal at this school would rather have kids behaving like shitheads than give them suspensions and detentions. it seems to me that parents are paying for nothing more than added security and spoiling their kids... and then they have to pay for the clothes, the lunches, the sports clubs, etc... i don't know if all private schools are like this, but the one i work at sucks ass. hint, the school rhymes with fairy pills.
