What grates on me is how whenever an innocent black person is stopped or questioned, they blame it on 'racial profiling'. Usually it's just good police work. If the cops were told to look for an overweight short white fat guy who just committed multiple murders, I doubt Kevin James would claim he were 'profiled' if he were in the area and were briefly detained for questioning.

It sucks being bothered by the cops. And we all get mad about it. But you don't have a greater right to not be stopped or to get more mad than usual just because you imagine some racial insult in normal police procedure.

I've been stopped by the police numerous…three times for speeding, once for running a red light, and three times for expired tags. I drove away from each without a single citation.

Maybe it's because I'm the right color. Or maybe it's also because I show respect and take responsibility for my actions. Another thing I do is keep both hands on the wheel in plain sight and let the officer know what I'm doing–"My license? It's in my back pocket…I'm going to reach for that now, sir." I have a feeling most of them like that.

There was only one time I was stopped for nothing and that was when a buddy and I were out on a late night video store run. We got pulled by a couple of state troopers who wanted to search the vehicle. Sure thing. Heck, we even sat there and chatted it up with them for the duration. After less than five minutes, they realized we were cool and left. A slight pain in the butt, but overall no big deal. Looking back, I can understand why they pulled us over–my buddy's car was loaded with college fraternity bumper stickers. They probably though it was the second coming of Animal House.

Oh the irony of Obama and his ilk screaming RACISM while they push for more and more abortions, which are disproportionately performed on blacks. So black genocide is A.O.K. with them, but whitey doing his job isn't…

How about teaching young people not commit crime then there won't be 'racial profiling'. Ever wonder why Asians are not 'racially profiled' in police situations? Because the majority of their parents teach them to be respectful and not do crime. They teach them to get an education. The 'teachable moment' would be to Black men to raise their children and not abandon them. To teach them that crime only makes your community look bad and causes problems for others of your community. Instead Gates and Obama want to punish those who have to deal with the responsibility that leaders in the Black community have not dealt with, and that is high number of Black males committing crime for their numbers.

Before people try to scream racism I will tell you this. I am a person of color myself and live in a place with high crime and see it first hand. The absence of a responsible male or even female influence will determine if a child will do crime or not. If there is no strong influence or a BAD influence then that is when you have a high degree of criminal behavior.

The person who said "this is about being poor not about color". Many Asians and a lot of Latinos come here and are broke as heck, without a pot to pee in, yet they don't commit crimes.

The majority of the world is poor. I have gone to places where there is poverty you could not find in the U.S., but there are no bars on the windows, they don't lock their doors and don't have to worry of being robbed.

It is what is being taught that causes crime in poor communities that being a "Gangsta" is cool. That being a criminal is OK and that it is cool to be a "thug". If you haven't seen that you must be blind.

Obama and Gates should come out and instead of attacking those who have to deal with this, the police and the courts, but address those who are creating the "Gangsta" chic that is out there. That is the music industry and, yes Hollywood who make those movies and hire Thug Rappers to be stars.

Two indisputable points: Some of the absolutely worst minority school districts spend the most money per pupil. Point two: I've been in districts that have a fraction of the money to spend, but do just fine. The difference is not money or colour. The difference is two married parents. Before the great society made black male head of households redundant, black and white illegitmacy rates were very similar.
That being said how shall we proceed to save the poor minority children, forced sterilization to prevent more of the same or taking the children away and raising them in clean, efficient, state run orphanages away from the ghetto?

Then to the person who wrote "whites created segregated ghettos". That might have been the situation many years ago. Today many people move to neighborhoods they can afford so that is not true anymore.

Take Asians for example. Decades ago Asians were segregated to their own communities like many people of color, yet with hard work and by following the rules they moved up quickly and now live anywhere they want BECAUSE THEY CAN AFFORD IT.

You will find many affluent Latinos and Blacks living in wealthy white neighborhoods so that argument is moot. But crime travels. Prof. Gates lived in a middle class neighborhood but Gates admits himself that his home had been broken into before. So the neighbor and a person on her way to work was acting like a "neighborhood watch" when she someone trying to force their way into a house. That is why the police were called because of previous break ins.

Then when the police arrived Prof. Gates put on his "victim" tin foil hat and cried and screamed racism instead of thanking the officer and the neighbor for being good citizens and watching out for the neighborhood.

Saying "it's about MONEY" is both redundant and stupid. Poverty is not caused by lack of money–that's the outcome of making stupid choices in a system that rewards and enables stupid behavior.

The numbers don't lie: Black-on-white assaults are 9:1 over white-on black assaults. And the disproportionate number of black assault victims are black. Poor neighborhoods are poor because of the hgh crime which keeps out businesses and drives away anyone with the assets to pick up and get out.

I live in one the Liberalests cities in one of the Bluest states.

Africaqn-Americans make up only 13 percent of the population, but has a population of 17 percent Asian and 24 percent Latino. Whites in my city are the most liberal around and Obama won overwhelmingly in our city and county.

We have a black mayor and were voted one of the most integrated cities in the United States.

Over the weekend there were 4 robberies and a shooting in my city in different locations by different criminals.

In each robbery and shooting the description was:

age 18-24

If an innocent man is questioned by the police it's good police work? I'd think questioning or stopping the guilty one — even if he's not black — would be good police work.

And what was Gates' crime? Being in his own home? Being uppity to a white man? Or being a black man who has achieved financial success and respect?

Cops question innocent people all the time. Usually they are the ones who turn in the bad guys.

Shortly after highschool, I was with a friend at a softball tournament, out of state. His girlfriend was in the same city so I made myself scarce for about an hour. While I was out walking, about 11 pm, I was stopped by two police officers. At first, I didn't think much of it, then I noticed one of the police officers was holding both hands in front of him and behind the car door. I realized he had his gun drawn! I had been quite polite to that point and I was the model of cooperation after that!

Turned out there had been an armed robbery in the area and they called in my description, which did not match the witness's description. I wasn't upset about them stopping me, they were just doing their job. I wasn't really upset about the drawn gun, I thought that if I was polite and cooperative there would be no problem. I just wanted to convince them that I was of no interest so they resume looking for the real criminal. I just cannot see any circumstance where antagonizing a police officer is ever a good idea.

Politicians and the Teachers Unions run the district, and it shows. It is the poster child for what not to do when running a school district or teaching children. I didn't see my dad calling the media and whining. Nope. Calling the cops wouldn't have done any good then, either. The cop claimed that our "Discover Kids" booklights were blinking in S.O.S. pattern. We were like 7 and 8 years old. Ok, we were the nerd kids that knew S.O.S. patterning Morse, but really? I think what you're saying is intuitively correct. To prove it, what are the crime rate statistics among middle and upper-middle class blacks? I'd bet they're almost exactly the same as whites of the same socio-economic strata. Ditto out-of-wedlock births, drug abuse, high school dropout rates and other social blights.

Basically, crime breeds crime, poverty breeds poverty, ignorance breeds ignorance. There's no elaborate conspiracy by "The Man" to keep the black man down; the black man does a fine job of that on his own without any help from us.

But it really doesn't have much to do with race, other than the obvious fact that a disproportionate number of racial minorities start out with those kinds of disadvantages.

Hey, cops have to deal w/crap I would never deal with, and especially at that pay! I make more in a month than some do all yr. Jiminy cricket is that horrible! Also, my experience with cops, mouthing off and handcuffs is this. My ex, the wife abuser, was doing his thing, I called the cops. They came, but the cop that was talking to us, decided for some reason that I had "encited" the event. Uhm, yeah. Anyway, he refused to arrest wife beater, and so I told him where he could shove it. And some other not nice things. So, he decided that a pair of handcuffs and me and all of my 5'2, 115 llbs self needed to be faceplanted into said cop car. I was po'd, sure, but realized later it wasn't a big deal, and I should have just kept my mouth shut. I wasn't arrested, but I am positive if I had of kept it up I would have been, so whatever your color, age, or sex, STFU when the cops are talking to you!

I've been stopped three times as well by different police departments. It wasn't for speeding, expired tags, or any law breaking. I followed your exact procedure. Once I was let go with a "thanks, have a nice evening"; another time my car was impounded; and another time I was taken in for questioning.

The cop who let me go was Hispanic, the other two were white. I'm black. I've never been accused of any crime. I'm educated and from a two-parent family. I work hard and none of the statistics that you people love to staple to all blacks as a stupid stereotype apply to me.

So if I did the same things that you did, why did I get the business from the white cop, but the Hispanic cop let me go?

I myself am a short, white girl, who's been stopped and questioned by police during walks at night in my own neighborhood. I never took it to be an insult. I figured they were doing their jobs, rather. Maybe that's me, though. I'm a woman who's father served in law enforcement for 20 years and ended up married to a military policeman. Funny, I went to school with plenty of young Black people. When I graduated, I attended college with even more Black people. Then I joined the military and served aside many more Black people. Currently, my next-door neighbors are Black. So…please…continue demonstrating the incredibly slow perception of change and difference you are right now. It's illuminating, to see how some people just can't seem to pull themselves out of the 60's long enough to observe where we really are.

It is a crying shame is that it is being perpetuated within the black community. It is almost taught as a subject to them by themselves that the white man is holding them back and that all whites are racist.

My two oldest grand sons (one now in the Navy and the other in the Air Force) have told me that the blacks in their units are amazed that they have been lied to and bamboozled all of their lives by the black community.

I 100% support the police in the Gates case. But your initial statistic (Black people 7X more likely to commit crime) is very troubling and misleading:
I was glad to see such a clearly defined number and so I followed the link for additional details, and was quite stunned at what I found. The numbers were created by a group (or person) called The New Century Foundation. Which appears to be a hard-core, white liberation society that is anti-immigrant, anti-minority, and especially anti-black.

Numbers are supposed to be incontrovertible, but these are clearly outdated and skewed. I'm sure the true statistics are bad and unfavorable to blacks (and hispanics), but the figure you site is based on statistics going back to 1980 even, before the huge influx of hispanics.
I'd like to accept the group's figures but it's clear that they went looking for certain conclusions and then found them.
Going to a group like this for figures on race is like going to Hugo Chavez for an assessment of the U.S..

actually, i'm in favor of replicating the system used by colleges and universities vis-a-vis part-time faculty. i won't go into the teacher's union issue, but will only suggest that if we were able to utilize the specific skills of certain teachers who could come in and specialize in certain areas, we would save money, have high-quality, real-world qualified teachers who were able to focus on narrowly-defined areas, and would not be as susceptible to the kinds of professional burnout that we see rampant among today's public school teachers.

Actually you are PRESUMED innocent until proven guilty, which can be an important legal distinction. Note also this applies to legal proceedings, not investigative work. The investigator must assume someone has done something then proceeds to remove possible suspects from consideration by essentially finding them innocent. Likewise a prosecutor must assume someone is guilty before asking the court for proceedings to legally establish the guilt. If presumption of innocence truly was the law of the land throughout the system, then our system of justice would cease to exist.

Personally, I think "hate crime" is just a reason to cry more please. A crime is a crime. Tacking the monicker of "hate" onto it is just an excuse to try to elevate the victim and somehow make them more special than other victims of the same crime.

An assault is still an assault motive aside. The victim of one assault suffered the same crime as the victim of another, and the idea that one victim suffered any worse because their attacker yelled things that hurt their feelings is no excuse to try to make that assault two crimes – a hate crime and an assault – rather than one.

In fact, I invented new slang for it: Lo-X. In other words, people who accepted and lived by low expectations of them. Hey man, I'm black, I dig being black, and I LOVE black people and I don't apologize for it. But part of loving your own ethnic group ('race' is an unscientific term) is to believe that they can achieve the very best.

As much as I enjoy hip hop (in fact, I'm blasting Dead Prez right now), I know that it's just entertainment. I don't internalize it, the way many black youth have been taught to do. Perhaps poverty plays a role in that, for young people living in the 'hood, there isn't any other progressive culture outside of hip hop.

So I argue with the racists on these boards because while they think blacks are inferior, I feel we're just as good as anyone else. The problem is in convincing blacks of that same thing. Does that mean I'm on a crusade against Jesse and Al? No, but I don't agree with them on everything, either. And contrary to what people on Breitbart will tell you, they don't have some magical spell over black folk, directing them to plot against white dudes.

Yeah, the racism is out there, institutionalized and otherwise. I know because I've experienced it. It's as overt as a cop shooting an innocent man in the back as he lay face down on the ground in a San Francisco train station, and as subtle as citizens diverting funds and resources from schools in poor black neighborhoods in Brooklyn to be used in wealthy white neighborhoods in Queens.

But even though it's there, we've got to face it and take responsibility for conquering it through our own successes, rather than waiting for white people to fix it, which is about as likely as us getting our 40 Acres and a Mule.

So if you want a prescription for black people, here it is:

1) Quit listening to haters. The whole purpose of them even opening their mouths is to make you believe you're less than you really are.

2) At the end of the day, where you wind up is up to YOU. Nobody can judge that better than YOU.

3) Three things are yours and no one else has the right to them: your body, your mind, and your money…use them wisely.

4) If you're going to hold your nuts with your left hand, at least hold your degree with your right hand.

5) No matter how much the white man hates you, it's more important that you love yourself (actually words of wisdom from my uncle).

Yeah, I can see how you "play the game." Keep looking for prejudice until you find it, even if you have to make it yourself.

It is a simple matter of logic. You do not investigate someone whom you know is innocent, that you know did nothing wrong. You investigate someone whom you think might not be innocent, that you think may have done something wrong. If you presume everyone is innocent then you assume no one has committed a crime.

So how do you proceed with an investigation? There is a dead body with bullet wounds, you know they died from them, but you must assume that no one has committed a crime. What is left? You investigate if a weapon was accidentally discharged when someone dropped it? If someone was doing careless target shooting a mile away? Only after eliminating every other possibility is the officer then finally allowed to come to the conclusion that yes, someone did commit a crime?

No! Law enforcement must presume someone is guilty, during the investigation they rule out other possible reasons, then they investigate until finding whomever it is they assume is guilty. The prosecutor then acts from the position the person is guilty and goes to show that in a court of law. "Presumption of innocence" then takes effect. Rather than the accused having to prove they are innocent, it is presumed they are and the prosecutor has to convince the court otherwise.

"Presumption of innocence" is a legal construct to shift the burden of proof to the prosecution, it is not a blanket statement that directs law enforcement nor a description of reality. Crowley arrived because it was presumed someone was guilty of breaking and entering, he had to assume Gates could be guilty of it until shown otherwise. So, why did not Crowley just shoot Gates to death?

Well, that's the thing…if you can ignore racism, then it puts you in a position where you see things differently than blacks. But I remember days where there were certain parts of town where I couldn't go as a kid, because I was risking violent attack…with precedent as proof.

As a black kid, that was my reality. If you're white, you don't even have to think about that because nothing will happen to you. This is why blacks are so apprehensive about race, because of living with a history like that. no- it increased poverty by huge amounts- in the late 50's the income disparity between balcks and whites was much closer- most blacks were married with jobs and homes, albeit very modest. The trend towards 'ghettoization' was started by Johnson and cost the taxpayer over 3 trillion dollars… and to what extent? In the 90's most of the high rise tenemnets were destroyed and many others were converted to buyer owned- and crime went down. By rewarding people for having babies out of wedlock and not working so you can keep them 'bunched up' for a reliable voter base is the most racist thing that ever happened.

I wish conservatives would wake up to the second way government robs us blind: enacting ridiculous laws that don't make us anymore safer and bankrupting those found "guilty" of these ridiculous laws. I know it looks good to be for apple pie and men in uniform, but when are we going to address the second barrier to productive citizenship- an over punitive legal system.

In January, as the Obamas sent their girls off to Sidwell Friends Academy to join the pampered offspring of other Beltway insiders, the $790 billion Swidulous Bill stripped from the DC budget the paltry expenditures which allowed hundreds of low-income children the opportunity to escape the failing public school system which, despite the highest expenditure per pupil in the nation, has a majority of its students drop out short of graduation.

Obviously for the Obama's and the Kennedy's and the Pelosi's of this world, "Public education is for thee, but not for me." The idea of allowing people to have an actual choice in the education of their children is anathema for those who beleive that those children are really the property of the state.
