Lonewolf Diaries: Europe Sucks. There, I Said It.
by Steven CrowderYes, you heard me. “Screw Europe,” I say to you. With all of this “repairing of international relations” going on, the press (along with every “Green Day Liberal” in the Western hemisphere) seem to be getting quite giddy. Finally we’ll be more like the Europeans and maybe, just maybe, that will allow us to be on better footing with them. To all of you I ask… Why?
Why on EARTH would the United States ever want to be more like Europe? Correct me if I’m wrong, but we left, did we not? Not only did we leave that older, lesser world behind, but we left skid-marks along the way with an entire continent eating our proverbial dust. Those were good times… Not to mention the asskickery that followed suit.
The truth is we’ve been doing things far better than Europe for centuries. We’ve built a stronger military and a much more dynamic economy than any of our European counterparts… And we’ve done it in record time. We left the world’s greatest superpowers one century only to blaze past them the next.
To be fair, times have changed and some European nations have been tremendous allies to the U.S.A. For that, they should be thanked and praised. That still doesn’t change the fact, however, that I don’t see a single country out there to which I could point and say “We need to be more like that!”
One could even argue that the United States is facing its current hardships because we’ve become more and more like old Europe. Even under “Republican” administrations we have continued to relinquish an unreasonable amount of control to the federal government. If there has ever been a bigger power grab reminiscent of old royalty than the one we’ve had in recent months (or years), I’ve never seen it… How’s that been working out for us?
If appeasing other nations means that we need to begin acting like them, you can count me out. Not only will I never be “culturally sensitive” to a people who use their left hand like a roll of Charmin, but I will never adopt a national ideology as my own that includes taking control of private enterprise or removing personal liberties.
For people who seem so hell-bent on multiculturalism, why can’t liberals understand that free enterprise/freedom is a part of the American Culture? I guess as far as leftists are concerned, the United States can’t qualify as a “cultured society” simply because we’ve actually created a society that works. If a civilization fails, it becomes a study of the human condition. If it succeeds (as the United States has), it becomes a culture-less society of capitalist pigs.
This whole “give unto us a king” mentality is really getting old. As for me, I don’t care what Green Day, the tiny Sean Penn, or the rest of the liberal elitists say; I’m proud of everything that has made this country great and I don’t think that we need to distance ourselves from it. But enough about me, what about you? Do you see any redeeming value in “going the way of Europe”? Is the destruction of a distinctively American culture worth the “love” that we’ll supposedly garner from across the globe?

The are a handful of things about Europe that I like:
1. England's tradition of having tea and scones around 4pm.
2. Spain's tradition of getting started kind of later in the morning, of lunch/siesta for 3 hours every day and of eating dinner late and partying 'til the wee hours (hence the late start in the morning); it appeals to the night owl in me.
3. The penchant for everyone in Europe to drive very, very fast; it appeals to the road rage monster that lurks in my soul.
Other than that, there is absolutely nothing in Europe to which I think we should aspire.
Europe's swinging right Steven, and we just elected God. . . so Penn et al. will soon be damning Europe instead of us. Do you really want to be on Penn's side?
I have a sneaking hunch that just like here, it's the media in Europe that makes it appear more left than it actually is.
"the tiny sean penn" works on a multitude of levels.
Europe's traditions are not something that we here in the US should try to emulate. The reason why our forefathers fought the revolution was to GET AWAY from everything that Europe stood for and to blaze our own path here in America. They didn't go through all of that crap just so we could devolve and revert back to our roots.
tiny, tiny levels
Wait a minute. . . weren't you SgtTank just yesterday?
P.S. I concur with your point wholeheartedly.
Ugh, you heard that bit about the newsweek editor too 'eh andrew? Pretty creepy if you ask me..Are people really that stupid or is it all a script that the left feels they NEED to adhere to save face?
You people have dirty. . . dirty. . . probably accurate minds.
How could I miss it?!! Talk about INSANE. I can't wait for the press corp to start asking for miracles: "Please my Lord, can you stimulate my ipod? It seems to have died."
lol..Yes I was Andrew but I figured out that one can change their posting name if they so desire. So I changed mine to my real name.
I should switch to my real name. . . Lord Obama Master of the Universe and Destroyer of Donuts. Oh wait, that's somebody else.
And now ginsburg has let the sale of Chrysler go through. We are so freakin' screwed here in this country. I am in awe everyday about all of the obama apologists that are still out there. Un flipping believeable.
lol..Down with doughnut destroyers!
As someone who has lived in Europe and has a German Daughter in-law and Granddaughter, I can assure you I see nothing worth copying. Beer, wurst and cheese exempted.
I know, it's stunning. At least the Supreme Court tried to slow down FDR's progress, but nobody is standing in this jerk's way except reality. And when reality snaps back hard, we're going to pay the price. . . not him.
By the way, Lawhawk told me that Brown even re-named Omaha beach Obama beach. Nice huh? I wonder what next week will bring? Perhaps he shall ascend us all to the Heavens?
Oh, that angry little face screams compensating! whether he opens his mouth or not.
I think you have indeed outlined everything worth copying in your post!
spot on- Europe is moving right while we dive off the left wing cliff- they instinctively know that the US needs to be the big kid on the block- if not trouble (for them) ensues… they are weenies but we still think them cute. And there are some wonderful customs, proper chocolate and what have you.
Hate them? Absolutely not. Love them? That's another thing altogether.
The best thing about Europe, it's on the other side of the Alantic.
I have heard that same thing. Brit's in particular appear to be completely fed up with the Labour Party which is,and correct me if I am wrong on this, left of our current rulers.
I know a couple a people from Britian (on there way to American citizenship) who are absolutely thrilled about this………………
Nothing dirty here…Cleanliness is next to Godliness — err, Obaminess, ahh…
I agree wholeheartedly with #2. I think we should just shift our schedules about 3 hours later and add naps and the world would be a perfect place.
Well, some countries in Scandinavia absolutely rock, but I might be biased. Strangely enough, looking at Europe 25 years ago vs today, they have emulated the West in almost every manner possible. It's really strange to walk through Copenhagen in late October and see the stores selling Hallowe'en gear, just because it's American. Even the EU could be seen as an atttempt to mimic our Federal framework.
It's classical Star-Belly Sneetches…the Europeans are jealous of what America offers, and Americans romanticize, with good reason, the history and traditions of older cultures. I like being in other cultures…it's fun to be a stranger at times. The real problem arises when some people (many liberal Americans in this context) think that association with other cultures gives them a patina of class and sophistication. The real uncouth Americans are the elite Eurosnobs. I wonder if Sean Penn braids his armpit hair? Err..no, I don't really….
I'm thinking of adding pomme frits? They fry'em in butter.
My goal for this month: Researching the exact nature of the threat from humans to doughnutkind by practical self-experimentation.
No!
Dammit! Now there are two Kits!
POTUS is really LOMUDD?
Now wait, that is a GOOD thing!
I am not alone!
I have no problem with that! I'd make "yummy sounds" but I don't know how to write that. I do love me some German beer. . . and wurst. . . and buns. . .
Darn. Now I'm hungry.
LOL! Yeeeeees!!!!
LOL but I'm LEGAL..read: Logged in.
It's cleanly at the top.
" pomme frits"
~~~~~~~~ That's me drooling..However I don't think McDonalds makes them.
lol..
You have to understand that Europe has not transcended its time when there were kings, lords, dukes, and serfs.
Hence, the understand their place and this is why the US upsets them. We don't understand our place, at the foot of an authority figure.
Obama, take note.
The left just got savaged in the European elections. It was so bad for Brown that he's had to put down a rebellion in his own party. Several countries are talking about no-confidence votes in their socialist governments.
Sounds good to me. Time for us to follow their lead for a change!
Agreed. They have been able to coast for years, knowing that we would be the responsible partner. Now we've elected a negligent fool. Time for them to step up.
Well I did see that video where PM Brown "slipped up" BUT it had to have been in the back of his mind in order for his lips to say it.
A great Author once wrote "when man is no longer a slave to the dollar he becomes a slave to other men".
Who is following who's lead? They just like going wherever we are not. Nest time we swing right again… Well, let us hope by then they will have realized just how badly in debt their socialist union-friendly ways have left them.
Their massive unions will shut entire countries down if any government barely hints at cutting any sort of benefits or other concessions. An entire economy can be on the verge of being utterly crushed and still they will complain. That is a bit too far into "empowering the people" to be considered anything but significantly left.
Someone send that email to Bill Gates, see if he notices.
Points 1 and 2 make you sound like a Democrat. 3's okay though.
Nor has China, actually about all of Asia, the Middle East and Africa yet normally at a tribal level… I have doubts about large chunks of Central and South America…
Why does it seem practically all of the logical countries are former English colonies? The "transcend" part still applies since beyond the US the former colonies may give lip service to the monarchy and that is about it.
I particularly like shooting up in the parks and leaving needles strewn about in beautiful Amsterdam.
Deep fried hamburgers! Ummm…delish. I did like the pomme frits.
I am waiting for the earliest US schedules to shift just one hour so we can get rid of Daylight Saving Time. Who do we think we are kidding anyway?
I think you hit the nail on the head. There's that thing on the foot of the statue, you know, the big green one in the harbor, about huddled masses. See, we have this habit of taking other countries' human refuse and letting those people grow and thrive as Americans, turning this into one of the greatest nations on earth. Of course, that's changed somewhat now that they don't grow and thrive as Americans – we have to let them revel in their old country cultures, see … and then there's that thing about it being cruel to let them experience the hardships that drive a person to achieve greatness …
At any rate, the rest of us are a nation of mutts that kick thebutts of Europe's old country elite.
Generally speaking, Europe has better food and art, and they've managed to get rid of a great deal of tiresome sexual hangups we're still, er.. hung-up on.
If we can get there WITHOUT tanking the economy to do it, we ought to.
Yup! Gotta have someplace to keep your collectibles and antiques…………….
and the occasional "Thermonuclear Warhead"………..
You know, I love Europe. I love to vacation there. I love their beer. I love the food. I love the castles. I love the Med. But daggone it, their economy and politics suck. Plus, it we end up trying to be more like Europe, what's the point of going there for vacation? Seriously.
Just a little tongue and cheek tonight…
iwantmypartyback.org
You too?!! Small world.
You should apply for a Grant. . . or a fistful of Lincolns.
Point 3 is irrelevant anymore……..Speed Camera's nailed to everything that isn't moving!
"Health and Safety Nazi's" don't ya know!
Green statue in the harbor? The Hulk?
I am so with you on the naps. Naps are AWESOME!
I can't think of anything European that I like that we can't get here. Other than time off for naps. Naps are the best.
Damn, now I'm craving paella. Thanks.
How many times have we had to pull Europe's ass out of the fire?
And not just in wars. Economically too!
I hear pissin' in the fountains is pretty popular too…………..
I've been to Europe twice. I met more people than I anticipated who were big supporters of George W. They don't get the attention that raving leftists do.
Thank you for saying what I've been thinking for many a day. We were blessed to live in Singapore for a couple of years which was a great experience and travel throughout Asia where we met and got to know many a European who were hell bent and determined to remain in Singapore rather than returning home due to weather, taxes, crime, poor schools, corruption etc. Asia at least isn't holier than thou about its greatness and love the US rather than disdain us.
The Brit's say they want out of socialized medicine and assinine tax's. If that's true they are going to have a conservative goverment for a very very long time…….They've got about a 30 year of socialist crap piled up in the loo to clean out……………..Good luck with that!
Someone once said America should be allowed to retain its capitalist system for diversity's sake. The world doesn't need another mediocre socialist nation.
I like everything you said. But I have a question? Please explain to me what's up with their teeth?
Apparently Dentistry wasn't on the list of things to emulate………………Too harsh? Nah……
"Give us a king" Since the beginning of time.. thats what the people wanted. They never remember the outcome.
Wow. Not to be a "yes man (or yes woman)," but I feel the same way. I have since before I took high school history with my liberal teachers, even more so after. I don't feel the need for America to be loved by other nations, just respected and not attacked. If the other nations don't attack us and we keep our strong military, that's fine with me. If we lose everything our founding fathers worked for by letting someone come in and lead us back to medieval times, under one person's thumb, I don't want to follow.
People used to immigrate from other nations a hundred years ago and work to become like the "average American citizen." My Irish, Polish, German, and American great-grandfathers worked and fought wars alongside each other to make this nation what it had become in its greatness. America was once referred to as a "melting pot." When things honestly melt in pots, sugar, brown sugar, and water for example makes a caramel syrup, the result is something relatively homogeneous. People should not be coming into America and speaking their native tongue and expecting us to learn it to appease them, they should learn our language and use it. America is looking less like a "melting pot" and more like a pot of stew with huge chunks of one flavor here and another flavor there, each fighting to give the most pungent flavor. Welfare here, Legalization of illegals there, "impoverished" here, "privileged" there. They can be proud of where they came from, but I'd prefer that they be even more proud to be American citizens. Living here is a "privilege." You don't have to live here and if you don't want to, who am I to stop you?
In my grandparents case, bad teeth was a result of diet. Can't blame diet anymore, and socialized medicine is a basic part of the EU. Maybe that is the culprit. Dare I verbalize the notion that Obama's health plan might result in the same downgraded care for Americans? Nothing like a set of stained, twisted, rotten gnashers to really make you want to emulate Europe!
Failure is a great teacher, and also something that we seem to be trying to do away with here. Europe seems to be finally growing discontent with the safety net and its exhorbitant costs, while we're rushing towards the cradle-to-grave caretakership here.
Steyn likened it to a perpetual adolescence; not allowed to be responsible, not allowed to fail, not allowed to be independent, and not pressured to do much for oneself. No wonder they have trouble fighting it. They've forgotten how.
I just hope we remember.
Some people just HAVE to piss on the electric fence…
Everything that is great about Europe is in her past.
True. But I'd add that if we can get there without becoming a bunch of godless, big government addicted nihilists, then we might be on to something.
Oh man, I wish I would've known this was on your calendar to write about today because I would've given you some material…
Paris, London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Comedy GOLD, brotha.
I have been to multiple countries within the EU and witnessed the machinations of European society firsthand. I do not quibble with the majority of Mr. Crowder's article and have also asked his "Why does America have to be like Europe–didn't we leave Europe to come here in the first place?" rhetorical question.
Mr. Crowder does travel, he can read, and the guy knows how to listen to other people and learn from their experiences. Not everything must be experienced to be understood. For example, you don't have to experience colon cancer to understand that it's more than mildly unpleasant.
Europe has some good food?
One of the great things about America is that if you want to live in a place like Europe, you are free to move there.
Emulating Europe, so that’s the future? All of my economic and political science instructors in college were Europhiles. My question then and now is: Wasn’t it Europe that nearly annihilated Western Civilization twice in the last century, once over a misunderstanding and again just twenty odd years later, murdering each other in the millions, to determine what form of totalitarian socialism was the better killing machine? Europe reminds me of the broken and demoralized Western Roman Empire in the 5th century. Power had long ago shifted to Byzantium and Rome itself was inhabited by barbarians living in the shadow of a culture and civilization they would never truly comprehend. Eurabia is a demographic inevitability.
The need of elitists within our own country to emulate Europe is driven by cultural insecurity. They see the history, architecture, literature, governments, etc. as superior because it is dominated by European elitists. Our economy is meritocratic and our culture is chaotic. Our elitists wish for us to become more like Europe because it concentrates more power in their hands, which is, in their minds, where it belongs.
"Our elitists wish for us to become more like Europe because it concentrates more power in their hands, which is, in their minds, where it belongs."
That's absolutely right. In their Post Modernism they've lost sight of and faith in the founding principles of the Republic. They've been insidiously persuaded (most likely in college) against the moral arguments for Capitalism and meritocracy. They believe that (in Alynski fashion) they are morally charged to create their utopian vision of social justice whether we Plebs want it or not. Its all very frightening.
Not exactly right in the sense of American conservatism or classical liberalism, but some countries seem to have found a kind of balance for the moment. In the countries I know, at least they don´t glorify government power. They far too often look to government for solutions, but the relationship is more like that of sulking teenagers to their parents: make lots of demands but hold politicians in contempt. French farmers may strike for higher subsidies, but you would never expect the same creepy hero-worship we are seeing with Obama. Barry is a minor celebrity in Europe, but the relationship would be much more adversarial if he actually had power.
"they've managed to get rid of a great deal of tiresome sexual hangups"
Bollocks. They do what everyone else does. Except reproduction.
As for the food, it is good. But it also depends where you are and who you are. I have seen what an average french family eats at home and it didn´t exactly blow me away. And greek food is even more boring than mexican. Southern Germany, Austria and Italy are bliss. I can´t live anymore without the full range of breads and cheeses. Harder to get quality meat though.
Some people seem to think that American can emulate Europe by copying its political mistakes. Look: Big government and socialism is not responsible for the art and food in Europe. Emulate Europe and you will get the socialism and unemployment, but none of the rest.
(Yes, I know much of the art was historically sponsored by the aristocracy. But they still spent their own money, and that was a long time ago. Today European governments sponsor the arts and the result is crap that nobody likes even though they pay for it through taxes)
The French government did not invent their cheeses. The German government did not invent their beers. Medieval monks and 18th century farmers did.
You want to emulate Europe, you will end up with the socialism and socialism only.
You want food and art, import it and market it.
Corrections:
1) Some parts of Europe have better food
2) Europe has *older* art, and that is better. Modern European art sucks goat balls just as much as ours.
3) You obviously believe that Europe getting rid of their "sexual hangups" has no connection to their general malaise. You are mistaken.
Europe is of course full of truly remarkable architecture and art, but Americans have no need to feel insecure.
First, many Europeans take it for granted and don´t know that much about it.
Second, no need to list America´s cultural achievements here; they are plentiful and recent while modern Europe for decades has given us very little.
You meet many Europeans who say that America has no history or culture. Having lived in Europe for many years, I could not disagree more. I find American history much more interesting and inspiring, perhaps because it does not deal with the ups and downs of feudal aristocracies.
Heh. An apt analogy.
I'm an American who has lived in Europe the last 3+ years (Denmark, to be exact). In the beginning the little kingdom felt like my personal utopia. Rich culture, art, good food, nice fashion & beer. Over time, it’s become my own dystopic journey. How anyone could think socialism is all wine and roses boggles my mind. To be honest, the socialist Scandinavian welfare-state is bloody awful. Danes are great people, but very much all the same. In my entire time here, I’ve met ONE person who questions whether the socialist-welfare model is the best way (he was a rare, pro-American banker). There’s no plurality of thought to be found. Socialism in a tiny country of 5 million all-white people works fine for a set period of time, but it’s buckling under the weight of its changing demographic and the Islamo-fascism creeping into its borders. There are many more Muslims in DK (per capita) than in the U.S., and this tiny country isn’t equipped to handle the change. Denmark is the most secular, anti-religious place you could find, so you could imagine how well Sharia-law-following Muslims integrate. With socialism, you have to be able to predict the behaviors of the population, like who will always work, who will always free-load, etc, to set the budget and allocate lavish benefits for all. This is done using models based on culture, race, ethnicity, religion…and it is dependent on people sharing those things and being relatively homogeneous. As Denmark enters the global world, and tries to (pretends to?) accept newcomers and immigrants, this disrupts the socialist model. I’m proud of Denmark for being an ally to the U.S. in the war in Iraq, but they also now feel a responsibility to accept Iraqi refugees to Denmark, and in such a small country, a small up-tick in any group is something all can feel.
Andrew Klavan nails it in his On the Culture piece called “Shut Up” where he describes the way socialism has sucked the life and vibrancy out of European countries (he cites examples in the Netherlands where politicians are now pushing back).
I pray that America does not become more like Europe. It will be the beginning of our end.
I'm pleased to see some response to all the negative talk about my country. I refuse to apologize for this to be the most free, most prosperous, most generous country in history.
1. Tea is for sissies and gives you bad breath. I travel the world and will drink a lot of awful coffee before I'll drink tea (and I can't wait to get back to the best coffee in the world in the Pacific NW).
2. What a waste of a day.
3. Typical euro self-centeredness & self-absorption.
There's great history and art in Europe (but you have to put up with all the downers associated with the cities), and still a lot of wonderful little villages with gracious caring folks.
I dunno. It's an eyesore though. I hear they'll soon be replacing it with "The Won."
Europe has better art thanks in large part to Christianity, something they ditched long ago. Bye-bye art. As someone poitned out, the beer and cheese are also thanks to Christianity. Bye-bye new beer and cheese. And the rest was invented to cover up rotted meat, ringing endorsement.
You're a'peein? No thanks.
Yesterday, I spoke to an 86 year old elderly gentleman who served in Japan after WWII. He told me that the Obama worship by the left and the media bothers him. He says he has never seen anything like it in this country, but that he did see it in Nazi Germany. He thinks Obama could become a dictator and that he thinks, YES, it can happen here.
Wasn't beer the result of the Little Ice Age?
BRILLIANT!
Now, if they can throw off that farcical entity known as the EU, they may come back to sanity. Then, as soon as they do that, we can demolish the UN and send it to …..hell, I don't know, Bulgaria for all I care.
I lived in Dublin, Ireland for a while, and I absolutely loved it. It's my second home, and I'd go back in a heartbeat. That said, I don't think for one minute that it's better than this country. It's not worse either, but it is different. I was there during the height of the anti-Bush/anti-Iraq sentiment (2007), when we were getting all kinds of verbal attacks from people all over the world, and you know what? The Irish people couldn't have been nicer to me. Everybody that I met while I was over there was perfectly friendly, very open and happy and funny and charming, and most importantly, respectful of others and of their opinion, even if they disagreed with that opinion.
There is much about this country that I wouldn't trade for anything, but that? Yeah, I could go for more of that out here. No vicious name-calling. Just a fair, easy discussion where, if we can't come to a compromise, we just respectuflly agree to disagree, and politely walk away. It would be amazing if we could be more like that.
Sad, but true. European labor unions can paralyze almost the entire continent.
I had brief a taste of europe in London, but I certainly had a mouthful of Russia back when that Iron Curtain was still splitting a country in two.
Despite the guides, I managed in two seperate occasions to split from the herd of teenagers and have a look-about. They where brief, but highly illuminating. Thru hook or crook, I was the only kid of the pack. Everyone else where seventeen while I was around fourteen years of age and on both occasions it was late into the evening. The first happened when the teens where at a Bar getting smashed and the other was late one sleepless night near the hotel. Both happened at Leningrad -Saint Petersburg now..- and to my eyes very chilling.
For the bar I traveled around the block and down into the subway because the lighting outside was sparse. Street lights where for the most part somewhat random. The subway had a few listing about and most looked at me way too often in suspicious eyes, I guess I stood out a little bit with my western clothes. Fear I felt from myself as well as the possible ones projected emanating around me felt real. I didn't stay long and left the oppressing feelings behind. The life was only hidden in the bar since liquor was in abundance.
The second was my stroll along the shoreline walking from one rusted out artillery emplacement to another where I saw an forty looking woman with her mutt. I greeted her with the stock Russia hello and was responded by a nervous yank on the leash and retreat. Anyway, those military guards where rusted beyond any use and reminded me at everyday how dilapidated the country looked.
Is this our future that the teleprez desired?
A funny aside, under the eyes of the guide we where allowed to walk around a block to purchase anything. I went into a bookstore of nervous eyes and noted that outside of the freshly minted English fiction, everything else where yellowed to many degrees Russian. I bought myself one book and later a clock.
The clock broke the third time I winded it up.
I should change mine to Lord High Knuckledragger, Devourer Of Donuts
Bulgaria is actually a pretty country, well…kind of. I say we send it to the Congo, I bet the UN crowd would rethink that whole DDT ban thing then most riki-tik if they had to live there.
Southern Germany, Austria and Italy are bliss.
Seconded, along with some parts of Spain. The rest of European cuisine I think is not only overrated, but based on dares between a couple goatherds in the early 1600s.
Well hey Obama wants the stimulus to be worldwide, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before he brings over some former Soviet statue makers. I mean they gotta eat too right?
Don't look now, but I wish we WOULD be more like Europe; they've actually voted Conservatism back into the European Union, standing up against islamists….they've actually seen socialism and have just voted against it. I wish we could say the same.
I've lived in paris for 4 years and munich for 1 and I agree with you. as I just said in another comment here, the Europeans are finally waking up (probably too late, but setting an example for us, which we will NOT take, I assure you);; They've voted against islamists FINALLY, and they're voting against the kind of bail outs we've been doing ; they've LIVED SOcialism and don't want it. Not us, we're running toward a brick wall and slamming Europe on the way.
For much of 2005 & 2007, our family lived in a little town in eastern Germany. When we were there in 2005, my son lamented that there weren't any children around to play with. I thought this was odd until I looked up the town on wikipedia and found that it "boasted" the lowest birthrate in the world. When we returned in 2007, there were baby carriages everywhere. When we went to the park, there would be at least a dozen strollers parked on the edges (with babies/toddlers still inside) while the parents (mom & dad! – high unemployment) would be congregated in little groups smoking. There was never any pushing Jr. on the swings. According to my husband's co-workers the government had began paying people to have babies. I understand why, but I'm still not sure it is a good idea to pay people to have babies who weren't willing to procreate on their own. I treasure the memories of the wonderful food, architecture, and friends we made there. But what I also remember is the utter sense of doom and gloom that seemed to permeate the entire town – the giant bust of Marx in the center of town is a perfect representation of the mood of the town.
I agree. Screw Europe!
I'm half American and half European. I grew up both in the States and in Europe. I choose to make the United States my home because, much as I love Switzerland (my other home), it just doesn't have what the U.S. has to offer. It's a beautiful place, the people are friendly, the food is decent but it's lacking something. It lacks the vitality and spirit that makes the States an exciting and wonderful place to live.
I will say that the European emphasis on polyglottism is just about the only thing they have on us. But, then again, there's a running joke in my family about how in reality the continent is The United States of Europe. Travelling from country to country is about the equivalent of going state to state. It's a bit easier to pick up languages when they're so omnipresent.
Women go topless on European beaches if they want and nobudy cares. That's about all I can think of.
Absolutely and pray hard that global warming never change that !
ROTFLMAO. I have three brothers, two are physicians, the other and myself are lawyers. I can only imagine the level of sophistication we would enjoy as Irish Catholics if our grandparents had opted to stay in Belfast. This is the greatest country in the world.
Yeah, no Americans ever stormed the Winter Palace, elected Hitler to power, or introduced the word "gulag" to our lexicon.
Gitmo.
Works for me, your Lordship.
Fact: 20% of Americans now own 85% of our country's wealth. This is not due to big government. This due to American style capitalism–socialism for the rich and social Darwinism for everyone else.
You forgot about cheese, excellent cheeses!
I get so sick and tired of reading ignorant jingoist harangues about how the good old U.S.A. is so much better than Europe (and the rest of the world as well). With the exception of a relatively few aristocrats, the vast majority of immigrants to the Americas were the losers of Europe. My own revered ancestor came as an indentured servant. Yes, we were fortunate enough to do well, but look at our advantages: a basically untouched continent of farmable land and great mineral resources, none of which were due to any moral superiority on our part. Yes, we developed these assets with a lot of work and ingenuity, though as we are now finally admitting, also with a steady history of cruelty and dishonor toward those who were here before us; but we were also assisted in that development by our geographical separation from the European powers during oujr early years. European nations have spent generations learning hard lessons about how people of different cultures must learn to live together. They also are the birthplaces of all of the Western culture of which we are so prod here. Is the Sistine Chapel in the U.S.? Is Saint Peter's? Did the Christian Church develop here? Further, anyone who thinks the U.S.A. has a monopoly on natural beauty has never seen the Alps, or Norway. To see the towns and even cities tucked into mountainous slopes above the Mediterranean Sea is to realize how much we have to learn about building habitats that compliment rather than scar the environment around them. To visit European countries is to be overwhelmed with the efficiency of their transportation systems. And, frankly, to become ill in Europe will lead you to be greatly impressed with their medical facilities as well, negative propaganda of the AMA and our greedy medical insurance companies notwithstanding. If you think we have nothing to learn from Europe, you are blindly partriotically prejudiced , or jsut stupid.
iof herr onama likes europe so much and hates america why does he not move his black liberal ass and that whore of his and tthose two chimps over there waht a pitful excuse and waste of skin again born of a white trash whore and balck ape daddy is the prickadent of waht liberal homo lovers and piss ant baby killers and traitors. god will deal with him in due tiume when the son of satan and evil anti christ will be caste in to the firey pits of hell.
Europe is a museum. Great art & architecture but the people and culture are dying and/or dead already.
Dude, even their BAD ART is better than ours. The French – I repeat THE FRENCH – are kicking our arses at action films and horror movies right now. What else do we still do better than anyone!?
You are probably right, but then which hangups are that anyway? Most regular people, be they Germans, Frenchmen or American liberals, are utterly conservative when it comes to their own family, their own marriage, their own children. They just cannot translate it into a coherent wordview. And as for "tolerance", I heard plenty of gay jokes over there. They didn´t mean to hurt anyone in particular but it wasn´t pleasant for a gay German colleague of mine.
Sauerkraut started out as a conservation method – but I love it. That´s right I said it. On a cold day with bratwurst and mashed potatos and beer and lots of mustard. I´m drooling over my keyboard right now.
You have a point, Hollywood sucks at what they are supposed to do best, pure kinetic entertainment.
But how many good French action/horror movies are there? If you count them, there are maybe 2 per year, tops. Or am I forgetting some?
They do and it´s hell. Because it is all you can think of when all you wanted was a slow day at the beach spent reading and sucking up rays.
Try to lose your job in France or Germany at the age of 50. Good luck finding anything. Especially with your spelling ability.
Hi Terry. I have to point out a flaw in one of your points. As an American who has lived the last 3 years in Denmark – a welfare-state nation with free university, free health care, etc. – I have a first-hand experience of receiving free emergency care in such a system. Becoming more Danish, I don't have a car here, so I ride my bike everywhere. I had a bad bike crash almost 2 years ago, ended up in the emergency room, with excrutiating shoulder pain. The doctors looked at me — spoke very little Danish or English — and told me it was just a scrape, sent me home wth 2 ibuprofen. No x-rays, were necessary, he said. No follow up appointments, nothing. Two weeks, a month later, I visited my appointed doctor with a bright purple, swollen upper arm, who told me to exercise it and keep it moving. It wasn't until nearly 2.5 months later when I flew back to the U.S. where I saw a proper facility did I learn my shoulder was broken in 2 places, and that bone chips from my shoulder had calcified and caused horribly painful tendonitis. I was properly treated for the break in the U.S., but the delay in my care and the wrong "diagnosis" has caused pain and damage that lasts to this day. I could read on the Danish "doctors" faces and the person handling my paperwork that their decision to send me home was based on cost/benefit analysis, nothing more. Its a game of numbers here, purely. I was a competitive triathlete who can now barely swim because of this accident. I would have gladly paid a large deductible – or worked a second job to foot the entire bill of a visit to an American hospital — if I had had the chance to see a talented, trained and responsive physician in the United States at a time when I needed reliable care. In Denmark, medical tests like pap smears that most American healthcare plans and the AMA recommend for women to have EVERY year, are only covered by the Danish healthcare system every 3 to 5 years. You can imagine how many times higher the incidences of death by cervical cancer is in Denmark compared to in the U.S. The brilliant European health care system you tout is a complete fable and an utter failure to citizens
Europe's "right" is not like our "right". Righties in Europe don't believe in the right to self defense (no guns), nor are they socially conservative. Quote from France's Sarkozy:
"I would like to say one thing, in what is my conception of the Republic, security is the responsibility of the State, I am against militias, I am against the private ownership of firearms, and I’m trying to make you think about that. If you are assaulted by an armed burglar, he’ll use his weapon more effectively than you anyway so you’re risking your life. If the criminal is not armed and you are and you shoot, your life will be ruined, because killing someone over a theft is not in line with the republican values that are mine. The private ownership of firearms is dangerous. I understand your exasperation for having been burglarized two times, I understand the fear that your wife and daughter may have but the answer is in the efficiency of the police and the efficiency of the judiciary process, the answer is not in having guns at home."
Ugh.
Britain's Conservative party is not a lot different than the Labour Party. Maybe a bit more fiscally conservative, but if you actually go and read both parties' manifestos, you'll see that even the Conservatives are quite left.
Terry, the only reason why Europe is able to "afford" socialist medicine is because they don't have to spend a lot of money on a military budget – they've got the good ole' USA covering their backs, which is, in essence, the American taxpayer's courtesy. Right now, that health system is falling apart because Europeans are not reproducing, and their tax base is shrinking, with a growing aging population that needs more health care.
No, the losers were not those Europeans who left and became Americans. The losers stayed behind in Europe and gave you the mess that is Europe now. They just can't help themselves, can they?
Europe followed our lead in installing democracy– one man, one vote– a move emphasizing the equality of persons. Since then, though, Europe has galloped miles ahead in terms of social equality, while we have shuffled our feet.
Like it or not, 'more social equality' is the way our future has been heading since the middle ages.
Europe is dying. I've lived in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Switzerland. There is a lot about it that is very pleasant and nice. That said, they are noticeably less well off than Americans. I mean average Americans and average Europeans-not just elites-and the gap between Europe and America is growing wider. It will grow a lot wider still in the future as Europe's demographic death spiral accelerates. They simply do not have the kids to man the workforce and pay the taxes to support the retirement of the massive baby boom generation even if the system worked financially-which it doesn't. Their muslim immigrants do not want to integrate, but are happy to take generous welfare benefits and keep having more kids. Things will get ugly in Europe within a generation. I sincerely hope America is out of Nato and has brought the boys home by then. We do not need to be spending our people's blood and treasure to rescue the Europeans for a 3rd time in little over a century. Enough is enough.
