Lonewolf Diaries: Appreciate My Indifference to Your Sexuality
by Steven CrowderThere, I said it. I can appreciate one’s creativity, I can appreciate one’s work ethic, I can appreciate one’s mental fortitude, but I cannot (and shouldn’t be required to) appreciate someone’s sexuality. Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t believe that somebody’s sexual preferences should define them. The fact that I like women, doesn’t determine who I am as a man… My principles do. Am I so wrong as to think that the same litmus test should apply across the board?
So we all know about the “Perez Hilton/Miss U.S.A” fiasco. Perez carried out a low-down, dirty trick by asking a political question (a practice from which the judges are strictly forbidden) in regards to Proposition 8. He did so in an attempt to demonize a Christian contestant knowing full well that she held the institution of marriage as being exclusive to “a man and a woman.”
Now Perez could have chosen from a multitude of more appropriate questions to ask, yet (as always), it comes back to some sort of question about sexuality.
Why? Why does the “gay lifestyle” always have to be about sexual preferences, at least according to self-deemed “gay ambassadors” such as Hilton?
If the goal is to normalize the gay lifestyle, shouldn’t your attraction to members of the same sex simply be incidental? Couldn’t you be a gay carpenter, a gay surfer or gay log-home enthusiast? Why does being gay in the public eye have to start and end with sexuality?
To be honest, I think that the gay community’s been hijacked by people like Perez Hilton for far too long. Most people (gay or straight) would be disgusted by his website, YouTube videos (one of which involves him covering himself in peanut butter with sexual overtones) or his size XXXL T-shirts riddled with vulgar slogans.
Gay or straight, things like that (along with his recent treatment of Miss California) go against common decency, and we should be able to recognize that regardless of his sexuality.
Perez Hilton sets a terrible example for the gay community and I would think that gay folks should be even more outraged than the rest of us. A guy like him can set progress back 20 years.
Do people understand, that conservatives aren’t rejecting the right to personal choice, but we’re rejecting the incentive to push a hyper-sexually charged message to the public? Yet if we state the obvious, we have the “homophobe” card thrown at us faster than a duck on a junebug.
Wrong is wrong, despite whatever is currently on the politically correct menu. What Perez Hilton did (which has nothing to do with gay marriage in itself) was wrong. His comments afterward were wrong.
I don’t judge people based on race, gender or sexual orientation, and I will no longer hear liberals accuse conservatives of doing so every time they rightfully make a moral judgment based on careless (or in this case, pre-meditated and mean-spirited) actions.
“By the content of his character,” I say.
“Oh, but you need to appreciate me for who I am!” – Okay, Perez Hilton. You’re a jack-ass. Consider it done.

What other people do with their significant others is none of my buisness. I wish that people would let it stay none of my business.
Well said, Mr. Crowder!! Whatever happened to judging by the content of one's character? Has society degraded to the point that character is no longer worthy of being considered a virtue???
Again, one liners from the left don't tell the whole story. Miss California was only agreeing with what the rest of the state voted for… she was truly representing her state. This is just a stupid tactic from the guy who can't seem to keep his mouth closed from every photo op taken. (you notice that)
Must still be mad he didn't get to participate in teabagging.
yes
If a complete tool like Perez Hilton is really an "ambassador" for gay people, gay people are in trouble….
My partner and I agree completely. Perez Hilton and most of the rest of the people that claim to represent the "gay community" disgust us.
Good for Miss California for being honest, whether we agree with her or not.
Here's a notice Mr./Mrs. Hilton: If you might not like the answer, don't ask the question.
He was obviously baiting and interjecting his own politics in what should be an apolitical event. Why Miss California, whom 52-percent of her neighbors agree with, is being taken down by the directors is obscene. Hilton should be getting the brunt of this, no one else. His slander on her should dismiss him from the public eye, but it won't. The correct parties will see him as some sort of hero when in fact he's pure villain. Take away the gay overtones, he's no different than the thought police.
Is this the best celebrity culture can create? Some rabble rousing deviant placing a magnifying glass over himself? This is what we award now? Makes me pine for the days of the other Hilton, at least she was semi-nice to look at in a "needs-an-IV-stat" kind of way.
Miss USA is soft-porn for guys whose wives won't let them download the real-deal on the internet. Perez Hilton chooses winners by deciding which one he would most like to look like. The whole stupid "pageant" is about absolutely nothing. Oh, except–world peace (thank you, Miss Congeniality). I think I'll make my decision on who is a beautiful woman without guidance from the flitting Hilton (either one, come to think of it). I saw the quick clip on Red Eye last night, and it seems the crowd was fairly happy with Miss California's comments. They mustn't have read the fanboy's script.
That idiot is more like a bag of lice-covered hairclippings: totally useless but fascinating in an "eeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww" kind of way…
I still don't get the issue of gay marriage. My gay friends are proud of their alternative lifestyles. And if that's the case for most gays (which I think it is) then why go after such a mundane, conforming idea as marriage. Seems like conflicting convictions to me.
Wow, that's hot.
oops.. wrong P. Hilton
Well said, Crowder. Thanks for articulating what I've believed for so long.
So a person is gay. No problem. If that is how one wants to define himself, that's a little strange, but OK too.
But geez, to force society to accept in-your-face sexual identity* is ridiculous. There is an old cliche, "I have no problem with God, but I'm against organized religion." Well I have no problem with gays, but I'm against organized homosexuality.
Politically, not physically, pervs!
As a gay woman, I'm sooooo bored with the gay marriage debate. It's a bunch of people arguing over who gets to join the taxpayer funded country club, without examining the underlying social structures. I wouldn't even mind, except the pro gay marriage camp are so convinced of their own righteousness. They don't even realise how reactionary they are. At least those who are against it admit to themselves and others that they are conservative.
Hilton is a talentless, misogynistic a-hole. He doesn't speak for all of us and the fact that no one has him by the short and curlies (banging his head off a – no, wait, concentrate) right now for his comments is, in fact, deeply homophobic. It's based on the idea that homosexuals can't be held to the same standards of decency as heterosexuals.
Unless you display it, one's gayness is invisible.
I worked with a guy who to this day i am not 100% sure he's gay. I've even met his roommate.
He chose his behavior. He did not feel compelled to flaunt it.
The really funny thing to me is Obama has the EXACT SAME view on gay marriage as the contestant, and somehow gets absolutely no flack from the left for it. Basically "do what you want, but i believe marriage is b/w a man and a woman"
Until this flap blew up I was mercifully and blissfully unaware of who "Perez Hilton" was. The fact that he is now somebody who is taking up valuable memory space is, by itself, a pretty good reason for dismantling the internet and going back to communication via cunieform tablets.
There appears to be a strong need to exhibit in this strata of the gay/entertainment community. Perhaps being gay is their only "talent?"
I voted for Prop 8 but was indifferent in the end. Now, I am happy I did. Such enterainment, such nonsense. Where would we be without guys? like Perez Hilton?
Just take a few shots of Everclear (or Drano, whichever is handy), and rinse your retinas with bleach. You should be fine by morning
Of all the people that could have been called upon to judge this beauty contest, why did the powers that be pick this clown? They had to know that this kind of thing would occur. I guess it all goes back to the idea that attention – even negative attention – is better than being ignored. Well, they seem to have gotten the attention that they craved.
As long as individuals "believe" that their subjective personal opinions are upheld over another individual's, we continue to have lack of development toward personal responsibility.
Any person can subjectively define ANYTHING for self. It's the, "I'm right, you're wrong" attitude of entitlement that keeps the discourse running. The only thing "right" is a turn or an answer to a math problem, little else. People "agree", but so what? People agreed on lots of things that are stupid – like the earth was flat; blacks were less than human, jews were inferior, women ought not vote – doesn't make it "right"
Question to ask yourself: why do you need to be "right"?
An American cannot claim to love freedom & liberty and then act/speak in ways which limit the freedom of others simply because you THINK they're wrong, you disagree, you have distaste, you have dislike. Simple observation will tell you that you likely have a behavior SOMEONE else dislikes, has distaste for, disagrees or thinks you're wrong. Knock down laws which protect such freedom of choices and to what do you turn toward to protect your own rights of choices.
I'll say this every time gay marriage is brought up: It is schizophrenic for leftards – who as a group are anti-religious if not outright atheistic – to seek for themselves the blessings of marriage at all, as marriage is a religious sacrament. Beyond that, Judeo-Christian religious writings specifically mention homosexuality as being abominable, so heaping one on the other is morally insane. I have no problem with social contracts for all, homosexual and heterosexual, as our legal system ought to provide for the orderly inheritance of wealth and other things, but marriage ought to be left to Churches and Synagogues, and the government ought to be forced out of it entirely.
That's because liberals know Obama doesn't believe much of anything and simply says what he has to in order to win the current popularity contest. Just like that guy in New York, he would federalize gay marriage in a heartbeat if his polls slipped. And I didn't mean that as a pun!
Hilton likes being the center of attention. Does anyone remember much about the pageant? Perhaps not much. But everyone is somehow acquainted with Hilton and Miss California. That, and knowing that Hilton is the 'blond' of the lifestyle as shown by his politicizing of the pageant and his diatribe of name calling afterwards.
EXACTLY! AND the gay community continues to support him!!!!
I wrote an article last year about how the community continues to throw their support behind dems who have done NOTHING for them. Clinton signed the DOMA – DEM; Obama opposes gay marriage – DEM, and when you see the House/Senate majorities for the past 40 years, who dominates? DEMS
They have NO support yet, like the abused victim who enjoys the abuse, keeps going back for more, cause "this time it'll change".
If they love the idea of 'gay marriage', then they'll love 'gay divorce', 'gay child support', 'gay restraining orders', 'gay alimony', etc.
Wonder why so many lawyers are fighting to get 'gay marriage' passed? Billable Hours…loads and loads of billable hours.
I think I'd rather have my husband gawk at real porn than lust after Paris Hilton. She's just….ick.
Very well said! I completely agree!
Wasn't it Martin Luther King Jr. that stated he couldn't wait for the day that people would not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character? I would also think the same thing applies to a person's sexuality…it shouldn't define their character, their actions should
I think Perez thought he was at the Oscars ceremony rather than the Miss U.S.A pageant where the opinion did reflect the beliefs of the majority of Americans. He needs to get over himself and whatever he thinks he's "entitled" to as a gay male. All men (women included) are created equal but sadly extreme homosexuals like Perez feels that because of their lifestyle they should be treated differently than everyone else.
As an American who upholds the Republic & our charter, the Constitution – I don't even CARE about marriage – get gov't out of it & it all goes away – legal contracts, secular cermonies, religious cermonies – everyone's happy. Those that aren't happy? the ones who don't get to impose their SUBJECITIVE definition which is at a cost to other Americans.
While they're at it, out of education, abortion, entitlements, social security, medicare, just cross 'em off the list….
No kidding. I think one could get an STD just by looking too long.
Hilton, as with many who are in your face as they are, are the anti-conjoined fetus lady of South Park. Instead of having people just ridicule (as would be easy with this freak) or treat them as we do everyone else, they want everyone to focus on their sexuality. Who cares what or who you have sex with behind closed doors. It gives me the heebies to think of anyone doing anything with this guy anyway. If Miss Cali has her feelings, who is Miss Hilton to berate her? The militant anti prop 8 types aren't doing themselves any service by insulting or having a hissy towards those who don't agree with them. I know many gay people who you wouldn't know unless they told you. So I hope P can go to a spa, buy himself something pretty and have a day of reflection.
Remember back when all the "Gay Community" wanted was a little "tolerance"? Well, tolerance isn't good enough anymore. If you don't strongly support their lifestyles, you're a bigot. Eventually, anything less than marching in their pride parades will mean you're a homophobe.
Thank you Mr. Crowder for your intelligent commentary.
[...] Homophobe! [...]
For my partner and I, it's about the rights, privileges and responsibilities that come with marriage. We've been together ten years and have built a life together; we'd like to get the same recognition that other marriages do.
She was recently hospitalized and I took our marriage certificate with us (we're in California) everywhere and sadly had to use it more than once to get access to see her.
Most of the GLBT people I know, like me, have downright boring lives. We work, we pay taxes, we complain about the economy, we do the dishes. I'm not sure how "alternative" that is.
Apparently democracy stops when the other side doesn't vote your way.
But if your hubby is lusting after Paris Hilton, you have the advantage of not having to worry about outsmarting either one of them.
Exactly (to both posts) get the government out. And at the very least, change the nomenclature to reflect that marriage has sacramental role for many branches of the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam.)
I can assure you Perez Hilton does not speak for me.
Speech instructor to Paris Hilton: "There are two words I never want to hear you use in conversation. One is 'swell,' and the other is 'lousy.' " Hilton says "OK, what are they?"
Can anybody out there identify the source I stole that from? I will give you three attaboys if you can (and I do know the answer).
No attaboys for me. Drawing a blank. True story or a joke?
and since no one "owns" marriage all religions and all secular people can define it for themselves in order to support their particular bible, religions, their version of the bible, etc. nobody gets discriminated against and everyone can act in their own free self-interest
"nomenclature" – nice
I've got some friends who you wouldn't know they were gay if someone didn't tell you. They don't flaunt it and probably live boring lives like Stefanie says. They're not activists and have better things to do with their lives than feel miserable and full of hate for those who believe a certain way.
It was Stalin to Trostsky right?
Democracy is too important to be left to the voters.
My gay friends are a whole lot more vicious about Perez Hilton than I could ever be. And they're a lot funnier, too.
PH is a disgusting bottom feeder. Ugly, foul-mouthed, obese, angry, greasy, unattractive, gross, despicable …
Oh … and he ain't got no class.
Well, it is a beauty pageant. If they were looking for beautiful minds, Russell Crowe would win.
Close enough, but you only get two attaboys for slightly missing the mark.
Joke. The clock has three minutes remaining.
Well-it's a bit more than "slightly" but the brethren have to stick together, right?
"Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t believe that somebody’s sexual preferences should define them."
I agree with this wholeheartedly (minus the grammatical error). It is the single most important but most undiscussed aspect of the gay marriage question.
Time is up, and we don't have a winner.
Professor Percy Livermore to Lucy in "I Love Lucy," "Lucy Hires an English Tutor." 1952. The great Hans Conried played the professor, Paris Hilton was Lucy. And I saw it in syndication, years later, thank you very much.
Perez Hilton appears to be Susan Boyle's son, so much for her being a virgin. I can't imagine either one of them ever being kissed though. IF THAT IS THEIR REAL NAME !!!
I was soooo close. Dang it.
And the answer is—-below.
If we don't stick together, we shall surely stick separately.
Perez Hilton-Janeane Garafolo = "skank ho"
Isn't that the new Democrat slogan? It's up there with "Take the bus and leave the drinking to us!"
Does anyone understand that those questions have to be approved by the Pageant Committee before they were even dropped in the box? Or that another Judge on that panel asked the winner, Miss North Carolina, her opinion of the Bailout? If you really think Perez HIlton is capable of sabotage during a Donald Trump Production, like the MISS AMERICA PAGEANT, then you shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. Ever.
Although I am a straight individual, and I am frequently offended by stuff Perez Hilton says and posts on his website. He was by no means "out of line" for asking the question he asked. In fact, he was no different than the Judge that asked the very political question about the Bailouts. YOU all are making it worse by making it into this whole war on gay marriage opinions and flamboyantly gay entertainment bloggers.
She lost because she said "Gay Marriage, and uh, opposite marriage" which-personally-made me cringe. Not because Perez Hilton hijacked her crown. She sounded dumb when she answered, "My America, and my family and the way I was raised". How about, "My experience in this world and my education have lead me to believe that responsibility belongs to the individual states and the voters."
Or maybe we should stop letting 22 year olds with no life experience besides trying on bathing suits and dancing across the stage since they were 4 become the voice for the "I'm not a bigot I just want to treat homosexuals differently" cause.

You okay out there Hawk, the “skank ho,” and the Jackoffalope had you fairly exercised last evening. Oh, did you see your fearless mayor is going to run for Governor of CA.
Nice Steven.Couldn't agree more.
Bingo.
I had the privilege of marrying two lesbian friends . It was a beautiful thing.
Now they're living a "normal" domestic life.
Keep coming back , Stef
I voted no on 8 because I want Obama to fail
Beautiful. I concur
Good Lord Steve! Don't you know "Sexuality = Race"! That the fight for "Gay Marriage" is the same as the fight for Interracial marriage! Why are you such a HATER!
Sorry, I was listening to my young cousin.
She "Feels " rather that think too deeply
Sorry, I'm old but not quite old enough to know those black-and-white "talkies" you folks refer to.
Now if you said "Airplane!"…
Great article, Crowder. Caught ya on Gallhager's radio show this morning, driving my daughter to school. Nice job. Makes me seem 'cool' in the eyes of my 16-yr-old kid to have someone on the radio mention Big Hollywood. (Don't anybody tell…I'm not that cool. Shhh!)
but don't ever stop the videos…they're da bomb.
Other than the anal sex, what else is there about the 'lifestyle'?? Hedonism is the actual 'lifestyle' and the only thing they avoid is sex with women.
To prove how retarded a concept this 'lifestyle' is, imagine if horn-dog hetero guys with hairy chests, unbuttoned shirts and lots of gold chains announced that they had 'a lifestyle' and that slurring words, farting, banging teenage girls at the Newark Mall was part of that lifestyle. The obvious response from 'society' and the media would be to declare these guys douchebags, perverts and undesirable – ie, the people your mother warned you about.
But because some guys want to have other guys balls in their mouths, we are supposed to tolerate parades in their honor. We are supposed to pretend that guys dressing up like chicks, nuns or flamboyant tropical animals is just normal and that anal warts is a common condition which is completely unpredictable and could happen to anybody who uses public bathrooms (oh, and that public bathrooms are designed for strangers to blow each other as a means of community organizing).
There is no 'lifestyle'. There is only hedonism and a lot of confusion by some people about which gender they actually were born.
Frankly I've been busy, so I missed the dang pageant. For a million $$$ I wouldn't have been able to name the winner (besides Miss Texas NOT winning is a travesty!) so this should be a HUGE CAREER BOOST for Miss California. The runner-up is out pressing the winner…and Perez Hilton is giving the two of them a run for the money.
The "male model mimbo" from San Fran? Or the "which way to next HOT reporterette" from L.A.? Both are clowns without floppy shoes and big red noses.
I hear ya. I've been considering getting the whole "I Love Lucy" collection on DVD. Sure, some of the routines are corny and dated, but many of them are fall on the floor, I can't catch my breath hilarious. The candy factory bit with Ethel, and Lucy's drunken Vitameatavegamin commercial are all-time classics. "Ya got some 'splainin' to do, Lucy."
Sorry, another unintentional double-post.
Thank you. As a straight man with at least one gay friend, I don't care if someone is gay, straight or asexual. Nor do I judge a man or woman by their race, creed, or religion. People's actions and deeds are the judge or a person's character. Perez has given amble proof that he has no character and is an obnoxious bully. Memo to "The Donald", let's do a better job vetting the judges before mainstream American tunes out. Perez HIlton is less than irrelevant.
Dude,
There's only one way you could know so much about gay people…
Okay, wait, you're saying that gay people are just like everybody else, and yet they don't deserve any special treatment? BIGOT!!
Perez Hilton asking Miss California about gay marriage is like a hog asking a princess about slop. Except smellier.
Thank you. No sexual orientation, race, creed, or religion (or lack of), holds a monopoly on jerks.
Gay log-home enthusiast? An unfortunate choice of words, but still, in a sophomoric way, very funny.
I apologize if I came across as dissing your classic comedy. Just being goofy and trying to find my place in the middle-age demographic.
I find it appalling that we as a society are being "Bullied" 2 position ourselves in FEAR of saying the wrong thing that will make a "group" pissed off! I'm quite sick of it myself! I live in the Hollywood area and have many gay friends. I have lost a few because I did vote YES on PROP 8. I have nothing against civil unions and equal rights for everybody, but I will be DAMNED if I am going 2 be pressured into this one!
Roxanne in Hollywood ( and we are not ALL crazy here!)
http://www.DearRoxanne.com
Well Said Mr. Crowder. I love it. It is about time we all started to tell it like it is instead of tolerating these vicious and vile bullies on the public scene. If it is that you are not allowed as a judge to ask the kind of question Hilton asked, why was he not stopped mid-sentence and required to ask a more appropriate question? And, he furthers his abuse on video later. We are all aware of 'free speech' in this country and also aware of the consequences of one's actions. In Hilton's case it shoudl result in his removal from the public airwaves. WHO hires people like this in the first place?
That's exactly how I took it, and found no offense whatsoever. I've made more than one joke about my particular age demographic (as have a few of the trolls). Even my crack about seeing the episode in syndication is only half-true, I saw the original when I was in kindergarten, but I barely remembered it. I just thought Hans Conried talked funny.
I think I will print that up on my business cards. Name, phone number, "Heterosexual male". Who in the world defines themselves by the way they choose to have sex? Ms. Prejean had a different opinion. She spoke honestly. Why would anyone of sane mind berate her for answering the "sneaky, dishonest" question ole PH asked her as straightforward and unapologetically as he brazenly asked it? He should be removed from ever judging a contest such as this again and the G/L community ought to openly chastise him. I will never watch a Miss USA pageant again as a result of this fiasco. I will tell all my friends that the hetero-phobes are out discriminating again.
Yes, why on EARTH would anyone assume that a gay gossip columnist would be down for judging what amounts to a fashion show…
Bumper sticker:
Share the misery
Gay marriage now!
As a man, ok a gay man, I find Perez Hilton repulsive. He has no morals, no dignity and is disrepectful of all period. How this sham ever got any attention in the first place just amplifies the fact that medocrity rules. Believe it or not there are gay men out there that are normal in every way, shape and form except that they are attracted to other gay men. We don't dress up, put make up on, or get catty. We do love our country, love sports, love our parents and love apple pie. The rest is a bunch of crap by people who want their 15 seconds of fame–and it is shameful. Get lost Perez Hilton, you trashy piece on no talent crap.
And the worst part is that he's the most conservative politician in town. I was all refreshed, restored and ready to go again today and my recovery was going well. Then, the first thing I see I see on today's Big Hollywood is, wait for it, Janeane Garafolo. I'm beginning to think this is personal.
"Perez carried out a low-down, dirty trick by asking a political question (a practice from which the judges are strictly forbidden) in regards to Proposition 8."
I could be wrong about this, but I'm fairly certain that the questions have to be cleared by the pageant bosses ahead of time, yes? In any case, she was NOT the only contestant to get a political question, one of the others got a "bailout, yes or no?" query.
I really, REALLY hate to be in the position of defending Perez Hilton; but his reaction has been that he voted her down for the dumb-as-a-stump manner in which she answered rather than the answer itself. Given that I've got no real reason to assume he's a liar (I don't know the guy) I kinda have to take him at his word on that because… yeah, she sounded like a mumbling idiot – and not even in the "oh dear! I'm so naive and pixie-ish it's adorable!" mumbling-idiot way you WANT a beauty queen to sound like, either.
Some of Hilton's post event commentary, ". . .dumb bit*h. . ."
Some of Miss California's post event commentary [on Cavuto], ". . .I love him. . .I will pray for him. . ."
One need look no further to determine which of the two is led by compassion and grace and which by hate and mongering.
In my experience, the people like the former are constructive while the latter destructive. Perez will indeed set the movement back 20 years if he hasn't already. . .nothing like galvanizing the silent and amiable majority.
Jim Treacher, if I was a gay male, I'd ask you to marry me.
You wanna see hyper-sexuality pushed at children? Look at any Disney movie. It's always about the power of a male to overcome obstacles in order to get to his mate.
All gays want is to exist WITHOUT the constant focus on our sexuality.
This whole article is just stirring the pot in order to be a douchbag. You really support us? Then let us get on with our lives and stop making comments behind our backs at work when we never have a girlfriend and quit writing articles about how you don't want to hear about gays anymore. We get pretty sick of hearing about your ******* families sometimes, especially when you want to ignore and sometimes kill ours.
Well, he certainly qualifies as part of ambASSador.
Whose bright idea was it to have a male homosexual as a judge of a beauty contest for beautiful,
all-American girls?
It is as impossible for people of the same sex to be actually married as it is for water to become fire.
Bravo Mr. Crowder!!
Perez Hilton's manners leave alot to be desired, he should really take the penis out of his mouth when he talks to a lady.
