Lonewolf Diaries: A Letter to Lorne Michaels (Official Petition)
by Steven CrowderCopied below is the ACTUAL letter that I sent to and was signed for by Lorne Micheals (and assistant) today over at NBC. I know that the writing is a little less snippy than usual, but please take into account that this man could squash my nuts into oblivion. There’s plenty of room for suggestions, so I encourage you to chime in. And bear in mind, Lorne may be stopping by here.
Dear Mr. Michaels
I write this letter not as a disgruntled fan, but as a true admirer of what SNL stands for (and as a fellow Canadian/American). We both know how popular it is to mutter things like “I liked SNL, back when it was good” or “SNL used to be cool, but now their writing sucks etc.” Trust me; I’m as annoyed by those folks as you are. I truly believe that you have one of the most talented casts ever assembled over there at NBC.
I not only love your show, but I love the principal of a weekly program centered around irreverence. You folks are the jesters making fun of the king, and that’s something that a free country desperately needs. The problem is, that I don’t see much jesting anymore. You folks over at Rainbow Studio seem all too eager to get in on the “kissing of the ring” action. What’s up with that?
I would hate to see your show render itself irrelevant due to a completely one-sided cast/writing staff being totally ill-equipped to deal with the most lopsided government in American History. Don’t get me wrong, I know that it’s not entirely your fault. Being in the NBC/TV “Bubble” must make it hard to find a dissenting viewpoint. You’re surrounded by “yes men” who think of many Americans as nothing more than “people from the fly-over states”. Contrary to popular belief in NYC, there are plenty of people out there who are unhappy with this administration. If I had to put a number on it, I’d guess about 46%.
Half of the country tunes in weekly, waiting for you to take the irreverent pot-shots at the current administration that we’ve come to know and love throughout the Bush era, only to be disappointed.
I don’t know whether you find it “unpatriotic” to make fun of the current Administration, or if you honestly feel that you haven’t enough ammo. I would find the latter hard to believe considering that the country’s VP is JOE FREAKING BIDEN. The man is an absolute goldmine of material. He’s the comedic gift that keeps on giving.
However, if you folks don’t have at least one honest to God conservative on your writing staff, who is able to offer an authentically cynical view of the current Presidency, I would like to formally suggest that you do so. The quality of your show may depend on it.
Being a young Comedian who’s toured and written professionally for years, I would like to formally offer my services. Now I’m totally aware that someone over at NBC may pull the “Norm Macdonald card” on me (”You’re just not funny”), and may very well be right in doing so, which is why I have compiled a list of other thought-provoking, right-of-center comedians available upon request.
I hope you take this into consideration and I look forward to hearing from you… Or you could just write me off as some “right wing punk” with an axe to grind. That’s cool too.
God bless!
Sincerely,
Steven Crowder
PS: This letter is being posted tonight on “Big Hollywood” to tens of thousands of readers. Feel free to stop by and view their responses.
There you have it my fellow anti-establishment amigos. If you support this motion, leave a response explaining so. Also, if you feel that I’m a totally unfunny jackass who’s terribly ill-equipped for the job, feel free to suggest people who would be better.
Finally, to those of you who are happy with the status quo and DON’T support this motion… How does it feel to be The Man?

Well said Steven….maybe the SNL team doesn't want to make fun of BO, but Biden is another story all together! There are about 2 years worth of materials already from this guy and it's only 5 weeks into the administration. And for the life of my I can't figure out why they haven't done skits on Michelle's "sleeveless" hoopla! Give me a break. Let's hope Lorne has some real backbone and takes your suggestions to heart!
Steven…"PS: This letter is being posted tonight on “Big Hollywood” to tens of thousands of readers. Feel free to stop by and view their responses." Come on man…hype the machine. Try hundreds of thousands at least. He figure 95% of conservatives are in bed by ten anyway. So that leaves him with what..tens of viewers? Hype Steve…HYPE!!!
Ann Coulter at CPAC did all the Obama jokes which comedians are not doing, and was funny. She had the material to herself.
Good Idea, Let's hope he actually pops in.
Yay, you're back! Ok, you can't tell me that, even if all of the writers are liberals, they can't come up with something to joke about. Can we talk about the ears for a sec? The "omg look at my abs!" photo op in Hawaii? Or even just the msm's crapass reporting like CNN's investigation on how to get Michelle's arms? Hang on, gotta grab my barf bag, back in a sec.
What? SNL give up ragging on the conservatives??? That will be the day. I went to SNL back in the early 1970s when it was funny. Land shark, coneheads, stuff like that. I can't even watch it now and don't want to.
I was just telling my wife about how SNL could score huge laughs with skits about Obama's dependency on teleprompters. In one he could have a Ron Burgandy moment where someone (GW maybe?) sneaks in and starts typing stuff on the prompter while Obama is just reading it in his passionate style, not listening to what he is saying. Imagine the things we could have him say…..
The other is a skit showing Obama in ordinary everyday situations where he cant respond unless he is reading of the prompter…like ordering at starbucks or small talk with his driver. Have everything on the prompter. Could be funny…just imho.
I suspect it will be a cold day in H*ll before the current SNL writers take advantage of that.
I have the first year of SNL on dvd in a box set. Now THAT'S funny! I'm "matyre" enough to have seen these performed for the first time as well. Anyway, this administration is a laugh riot. From the boy president with the big ears to the doddering old senile veep to the tax evading cabinet members to the freaks that now run the congress and the senate, there is a wealth of comedic potential. Go for it!
Steven, I hope you get at least the courtesy of a response. And if you do, don't expect much more than "We won. We will trump you on that." The actual words may be different but that wiil be the underlying sentiment.
LOL man, that first one is so full of win!
Hell yeah. Great idea. Here's the prob, if they even attempt to make funny with ANY lefty, they are doomed with their left/demo audience. You cannot make fun of a Joe Biden ! it wouldn't be good for the nation. I have some very left-wing friends that canceled their LA Times subs, because they hired people like Jonah Goldberg to write a columm ONCE a week. They will not tolerate even a little descent. Forget that the cast and other writers on the show would hate it, their audience would cancel ie (turn the channel). So in the end, I'm not watching, and the people who do watch would stop if they attempt a comedy rebellion.
I'm not sure that show is salvageable. I can't say I watch more than half a dozen airings a year these days, but there's been times I've gone the whole 90 minutes without cracking a smile. usually, it's a couple chuckles and that's it. Long gone are the Eddie Murphy & co. days. There was a renaissance in the early-mid 90's with the Myers-sandler crowd and I could tolerate what followed mainly because Ferrel. But it's just pure crap now.
I think you are wasting your time, Steven. When they hosted Sarah Palin even Michaels admitted that "her politics wasn't our politics", and despite ratings that they hadn't seen in years, do you think they'd change their ways?
I stuck it though until Bill Murray, Jane Curtain, et al left (and I know there were some good times from Edie Murphy), but just telling you when I (and many others) left….
I was attracted to them for their irrelevant humor (humour for you
) – towards issues of the day, regardless of the political direction. They made fun of Ford and Carter.
And I didn't think Chevy Chase was funny even then – the most overrated "comic" I can recall. There's only so many times you can trip over a couch.
Plus I read somewhere that he got most of the cast hooked on heroin or cocaine, including John Belushi (now there was a comic)
I simply have never seen any evidence that anyone at that show has the capability to expend the amount of objectivity it would require to understand what you are suggesting, much less follow your advice. All I have ever seen is cheerleading for leftism and dripping venom for conservatism. On occasion they have given a winking, token tease to their idols, but nothing to believe the next four years will be anything but an Obama pep rally.
I wish you good luck though.
I'll believe it when I see it. SNL poke fun at The Messiah?…not likely.
when i saw "SNL" and "petition" is assumed it was for some sort of legalized assisted suicide thing.
next saturday at midnight, try being drunk in a bar for a change.
Good luck! I can't believe you even had the cajones to take it directly to Lorne. But I think it's a good thing for him to hear from someone other than a lefty sycophant. Not that you don't sound perfectly willing to kiss his boots if he hires you; I think every boss would expect it. Unfortunately, I fear that SNL is too far gone.
I am with you,Steven. I want to love SNL again. When they are on, nothing beats them.
This is what I wrote back in February: Stick to making us laugh SNL. We get how happy you are about the current administration. We get that you'd giddily drop your pants for the man if asked. I'm a big girl, I get it. I can take the hits in the sketches. But only if you make me laugh. You used to understand that. And, as your friend, I have to tell you that you come off as smirky buffoons doing a loud victory dance days after the fact. Know your role and get back to making me laugh or I am gone. Along with the droves before me.
Great letter! I hope that you at least get a response!
Biden is just BEGGING SNL to do another skit about him and he's even giving them material. The entire "I don't remember the name of the website I was here to promote on live television" and my personal favorite "Chuck stand up….oh God bless you" would be hilarious! They are there waiting to be made into a skit…which I sadly doubt will happen.
LOL. I like getting drunk at home myself
Although Michaels dismissed Palin's politics (don't laugh- most mainstream Repubs did as well) he was knocked out by her… and is, from what I can gather, a McCain supporter. Even though they are, and always have been liberal
(it is New York, after all) one guesses that as this disaster movie of a Presidency plays out more and more 'fun' will be poked at them. Joltin' Joe Biden is such a nitwit gasbag that he almost defies parody… it's tough to make fun of somebody who is already a strangeling…
I think the answer is that Conservatives can laugh at them selves and their elected officials, we don't take our selves to seriously on everything. Liberals on the other hand take them selves very seriously and can't laugh at the mistakes made by their elected officials. Unless the elected official has fallen so far out of step with their party or has been caught with his/her hand in the cookie jar. Then they can ridicule through comedy to let all of the other Democrats know where they stand in the pecking order of things. For example Blago, everyone thinks he's crazy suddenly. While I'm certain that he was just using a time honored tradition for all politicians, greed.
SNL's still on the air???? What night?
What you have to understand is that SNL plays to the home crowd — New Yorkers, and specifically those in Manhattan. The vast majority of Manhattan residents are not even vaguely familiar with conservatives or conservative thought. It’s just a political class and philosophy to be demonized. There’s no logic or thought in their coming to the conclusion that Nu Yawkas themselves are liberal. That’s just their default state of being. Of course, that jibes just fine with the entertainment/musician/Broadway/Hollywood way of thinking (or not thinking).
You can see this group go-along in the group acceptance of stupid skits on SNL itself. Where else would so many sheep crowd together and actually guffaw uproariously at frequent bits that are not really funny? Well, “in the know” and “with it” people. People who “get it” as the pre-conversion Dennis Miller said on SNL’s Weekend Update about new Prez Bill Clinton.
I agree. I have found myself not watching Saturday Night Live because the writing and subject matter has declined. Early in the Bush Administration the skits where light hearted and funny, in the last two years they were trite. A few weeks ago I tuned in to see SNL's take on the current administration and current events only to find one skit pertaining to politics. It was a hackneyed and bitter sketch with Dan Aykroid pretending to be republicans who were trying to subvert Obama. Honeslty, it could have been funny but wasn't. It sounded more like a writer getting his political rocks off in sketch form than a comedy sketch. Also, they need to stop bringing out the retreads. I get it Aykroid, Martin, etc were on the show a long time ago. That's great, but none of them have done anything funny in the last 10 years. Showcase the new talent, not the tired old talent.
Also they need to let that Andy Sandberg fellow write a few less skits. I am in my mid twenties and can't smoke pot anymore, so I like every sober person watching the show find his sketches unbearable.
my friend and i think what they need to do is use a comedian like billy krystal and color his facer black to play obama because i thinki it would be really funny. i used to love sat night live but ever since the election and what they did to gov and vice presidnt elect sara palin on their show helped the demooocrats win the election which still makes me mad. i tihink it is time we took the joke back to thiem and a classi comedian like krystal showed them what hapens when you mess with a conservative
George Bush sounds like a Midland-Odessa roustabout and to both coasts that's funny–though not to the rest of us. (Folks, that's how we talk…get over it.) Obama, on the other hand, has the flat speech patterns of Columbia School of Broadcasting grad. Where's the fun in that? Still, I'm betting he will show us plenty of opportunities for some good old fashioned ridicule. I have high hopes for the guy. Let's see if SNL will take the bait AND take off the gloves.
I think you may have hit on the real issue here. If SNL goes after the libs there will be a much larger backlash than going after the conservatives. SNL is probably afraid to take the heat from their own community. They've lost their irreverence and become totally mainstream– which is sad.
Great letter Steve. And trust me as a fellow nonconformist I agree with you. Obama and Biden both in my opinion are gifts that keep on giving. Also…an apology for Tina Fey's unfunny Palin portrayal. The hilarity lasted about a minute and then it became hateful.
And I like W's accent. But I also love cowboys. That is the accent of a manly man. Can't say that about oh Clooney, Penn, etc. You know.
The major problem with SNL this season is Seth Myers still being the head writer. He's let the seriously overrated Adam run wild with the show again this season. More Daryl Hammond please. They've relegated this talented veteran to the backburner for too long.
Literally haven't watched the show since they fired Norman. (probably not a great play bringing that incident up, BTW – not a moment Lorne should be proud of – depending on how you interpret it , he either got steamrolled by Ohlmayer, or he didn't have the guts to fire McDonald himself) Speaking of Norman, he's a staunch Pro-Lifer. You should get him on Big Hollywood. I don't think he's worried about being blacklisted at this point.
Steven, love the letter, completely with you. I know this is nit-picky but my inner grammar Nazi couldn't help but go "oh no!" at your usage of "principal" (should be "principle.") Your fans adore you either way, I just don't want to see Mr. Michaels or anyone in the future dismissing you because of it.
Keep up the great work and God bless!
Lorne is busy fluffing Obama's pillows.
drinking alone in my garage is a more productive use of time.
i am mystified why people treat saturday night live like some sort of institution. it's just another crap tv show that's run past it's useful life span. the beautiful thing about the media is that the sooner you forget it and move on, the sooner it dies.
SNL is a stinking, rotten corpse (has been for 10+ years) that refuses to fall into the grave it is poised over.
Someone give it a push, please !
I can't make it through 10 minutes of SNL. Snide mockery has become the only humor lefties can manage. Cruelty is FUNNY to them (witness the popularity of mean girls Chelsea Handler and that redhead who "loves her gays"!). They don't dare satirize their people – they'd rather make hay out of a minor republican mistep for 7 minutes. These are the same people who think criticizing christianity is "brave" but don't have the balls to niggle radical islam.
Lorne won't read your letter. He doesn't care if no one watches. He'll still get paid, and then, when
SNL is eventually cancelled he'll retire with his unredistributed income.
Don't even watch SNL anymore. Got sick of the Bush Bashing and the Homosexual stuff all the time.
Michaels can't criticize his Liberal pals ! They'll stop inviting him to their clambakes etc. You know, among the Libs, it not just politics and a job — it's PERSONAL all the way…
Besides, SNL is the only shtick Michaels has ever had — he's doesn't know how to grub a buck elsewhere…
For the record: I have always thought that even from the '70's SNL is moronic and base LCD "humor" that would be pitiful if it weren't so stupid. I don't consider any of the luminaries of the show (Akroyd, Belushi et al) to be even second-rate acting material. Have never seen one iota of proof or shred of evidence that Chevy Chase can do anything but mug for the camera, much less act.
Great idea but SNL is incapable of jabbing at BO in any way, on any level. I think all their liberal heads would explode if they heard but a syllable in jest of the Mighty O. They dish it out but they certainly can't take it.
I have to believe that SNL and NBC will never tell the emperor he has no clothes. They will swallow the poison pill the liberal newspapers across the country are taking. Better to go belly up than put anything liberal in a dim light. Better to pass up a large group of viewers than dis the 'Bamster. They will follow the emporer around buck naked reprising the old Bush the buffoon schtick. Even the ardent liberal viewers will grow bored with the next 4 years.
It aint Pillows.
It's not really within the scope of Lorne Michael's direct control, but I found Janeane Garofolo's recent comments on Keith Olbermann's show about Michael Steele to be deeply offensive.
In fact, if I were a liberal, I would be shouting "hate speech" at this point.
But although Lorne Michael's is not directly responsible for comments of former cast members, an entire season (Fall 2008) of SNL when the viewing audience is served up nothing but week after week of Palin-bashing can only serve to embolden the has-been SNL alumni to attempt to garner publicity and popularity for themselves by joining in the chorus.
And so, in this regard I do hold Lorne Michaels partially responsible. If he were to even slightly rein in the [insert conservative public figure here]-bashing, I believe it would go a long way towards delegitimizing or at least toning down the sort of feeding frenzy behavior that we have seen and continue to see, both from those on air and those at home who ape them.
Steven, just saw this on CNN:
"Lorne Michaels is in shock tonight after being accosted, by letter, by an ultra right wing crank. Said Mr. Micheals, 'I could understand the words, but the letter had no meaning to me. All I know for sure is that he asked his diety to strike me down before he signed the letter.'
Mr. Michaels is resting comfortably tonight within the heart of the collective, the SNL Writer's Borg, where they are busy scouring the papers looking for political skits for next week. Said the Writer's Borg, 'We do not understand why the 3% of the American public that voted for the Republican nominee, the evil Sarah Palin, continues to resist. But as long as they do, we will continue to point out the futility of their actions. This week we intend to ridicule their connection to rich, white people.'"
I think they got your letter man!!
Honestly it has been years since I have watched Network television. I saw the Juanita Broderick interview and when I found out that they bought the exclusive rights to the interview and then purposely waited until after the impeachment hearings were over I had had it. It was beyond partisonship and was actually fascist. Especially considering the flagrant unfair attacks they place on any conservative in power.
There are so many good shows on cable channels that are not political and from what I gather the networks are all reality shows and terrible politically laden tripe anyways. Why do we still think we need to worry about the big three mainstream channels.
We give these people more power than they deserve . I could care less if anyone watches SNL. Why should I help them by paying attention to them.
Back in the 1970s, there was some creativity and the humor was not always political—-and the show spawned the Blue Brothers—classic cinema. The only redeeming element of the 80s was Murphy, the 90s Adam Sandler—-21st century SNL gave us Will Ferrell—and they can have him back. Chevy Chase redux…not surprising from a show without a new idea since 1984.
Astute observation — the Liberal MSM print organs such as the SF Chronicle, Rocky Mountain News etc. would rather die than admit their brand of Liberalism has been supplanted by a medium which they only acknowledge in disparaging terms ( the 'net) and brand us amateurs and incompetent to hold forth on the topics that MSM 'reporters' do.
To their detriment, the MSM organs have belatedly discovered there are millions out there who are just as good of writers as they are and many are genuine experts on topics the MSM still applies the 'one size fits all' strategy too. It's easy to see how lacking the average one-size-fits-all MSM 'journalist is — they cobble together their required 300-500 words required to still collect their pay on topics of which they know little. The sure giveaway is the 'reports' laking in context or background because the 'journalist lacks both contextual knowledge and background.
Funny, to the MSM, the most important thing our world is NOT human events, natural events or even the news of the day; the most important thing tin the world to the MSM is…themselves.
But you know that if SNL or anybody else were to dare anything more than the gentlest mocking of Bambi, Al Sharpton and his merry band would be screaming you-know-what.
Heck, if I'm racist by virtue of the simple fact of failing to vote for the guy, how much more so would I or anybody else be for actually poking fun at him? You know, on top of being a coward and all.
Rampant sexism and racism (on the part of SNL and SNL alums) are all fair play though, so long as the target is on the 'other side'. You know, it's the primary liberal rule of, the rules don't apply to us, only to you.
oh, and BTW, Dennis Miller rocks!
Even the show about SNL failed because all they did was kick around Christians and conservatives. They weren't interested in being funny only in bashing the Right.
Who remember Studio 60?
So who were the other names on the attached list? Of course you'd be my first choice. I'd also like to see Brad Stine. And I bet the similarly named Ben Stein could come up with some great stuff too. Maybe you guys could get together and start your own show.
Steven, everyone before me has already said it. I just wanted to say I loved the the Ferris Bueller-Cameron "Squash my nuts into oblivion" reference. Thanks for the funny videos and smart commentary.
The Rocky didn't die because of "liberalism". It died because Denver wasn't big enough to support two papers and the eBay/Craigslist effect on classified advertising revenues (subscriptions only make up a fraction of a paper's overall take)
They would have to start out with something lightweight like – Michelle (Hulk Arms) O's sleeveless White House Workout – and ease into the subject.
Isn't that the truth. If a Republican had said half the thing Biden's said, he would be the new star of SNL!
Steven, dont quit, keep on hammering way. It may not be on SNL, but your day will come. You have a bright future!
I think if Palin hadn't whined so much about Tina Fey, it would have helped her image with undecided voters. Seriously, can Palin NOT whine or complain or feel slighted in every public statement she makes? The chip on her shoulder makes Nixon look like Sammy Hagaar pouring tequila shots in Cabo in comparison.
Location:
The interior of an elegantly decorated New York City penthouse.
Our hero is first seen walking through his front door.
He carefully places his keys atop the custom made antique, 17th century French writing desk in the foyer, and calls out cheerily to his devoted wife, who is contently lounging on the love seat in the next room reading the latest “Ladies Home Journal” with the wonderful cover story, “President’s First Lady, has the Arms of Venus”.
Lorne Michaels: "Honey…I'm home, any mail today?"
Mrs. Lorne Michaels: "Oh hello darling, well I thumbed through it a little while ago dear, nothing important…oh wait, there is this one from that nice young man Steven Crowder, that you might want to take a look at. Do you know he's really a Canadian?” She whispers.
Lorne Michaels: “Crowder?…Steven Crowder?…sorry, neeevvveeerrr heard of him”
Lorne quickly fixes himself a martini, (shaken, not stirred), and with drink in hand, picks up the large stack of mail from the exquisite Italian marble counter top from the bar, and walks out to the lavish balcony overlooking the incredible panorama of the “city that never sleeps” spread out below him.
After gazing out on this twinkling wonderland that is his, for a few moments, he suddenly turns to his bride and excitedly tells her:
Lorne Michaels: “Honey…honey…look, I can see Canada from our house!”
He then turns to the camera, points directly at it and loudly says:
“Ladies and Gentlemen…It’s, Saturday, Night, LIVE!”
Music up.
Cut to commercial.
Good luck with that Steven.
Not Over.
I think I'm the only one that has noticed the real reason why Geithner absolutely HAD to be the Treasury Secretary. Obama needed someone in his cabinet that had bigger ears than he does! Did no one else notice that?
When we were much younger, my wife-to-be and I used to rush home on Saturday nights to watch SNL. Now we don't watch it at all. The show lost it's way in the 90's and it never really recovered. I don't know what happened. Weekend update was pretty well written even when the rest wasn't, but that too lost it's charm. Tina Fey did a pretty good job with it, but still, too little. Can't say that even Steven could save it now.
Dear Lorne,
I'm a rock-ribbed diehard conservative. But I promise to vote for every Democrat on my ballot until the end of time if you set Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey on fire.
Yours truly,
JohnFn
P.S. Is it true Chevy Chase is dead?
Alright, let me give this a shot …
Dear Lorne,

Steven, your posts never cease to entertain. Couldn't have said it better! Jason Sudekis does a pretty funny Joe Biden though! I would love to see some good-natured jabs taken at the President.
@Pete:
The RMN died because of the flight from traditional, Liberal MSM organs to other modalities; i.e. Fox news and web-based non-Liberal news organs.
In a sense, the diminished Denver audience for traditional Liberal MSM print organs was insufficient to support two daily papers — too many people have voted with their mouse clicks…
So, in a narrow sense, you are correct, but not in the manner you hoped and asserted.
The sooner SNL is buried the sooner I get to urinate on the grave site.
That's funny Vaughn. And you are probably right about it happening when H*ll suffers from climate change.
Why not do it ourselves? Forget SNL. There is enough talent in this chat room to overthrow the Kool-aid mustache wearers at SNL.
Just a thought. But I'm guessing conservative entertainers/writers/producers/actors/graphic designers/etc. would be willing to donate time, open a YouTube channel, create the skits, and give SNL some competition. I'm one of them.
It's comforting to hear that there's someone else out there who thinks that both Will Ferrell and Chevy Chase are totally UNfunny. Just for the record- I never thought Dan Ackroyd was particularly amusing either, and the whole "coneheads" shtick was absolutely idiotic (and I don't mean "funny" idiotic- just plain stupid).
The success of that show, IMHO, was entirely due to the considerable suggestive power of HYPE.
http://www.historyofhypnotism.com
The advertisers fled the RMN because the audience and subscribers to view/respond to the ads fled…it's a synergy you fail to acknowledge !
The advertisers took their trade to the web because that's where the former RMN readers went. The readers fled the RMN because of the numerous alternatives to the predictable, droll Liberal slant and jaundiced world-view.
[...] love the humor of Steven Crowder. I love his take on Saturday Night Live.…. will they ever get funny [...]
First off, SNL has NOT had a great cast since the mid to late 90's and that's just the honest truth. I grew up with SNL and it was my favorite show because they WERE equal opportunity offenders. After 9/11 something terrible happened. They all became left-wing lunatics that based 95% of the comedy on anti-Bush rehetoric. Once again, if you're an equal opportunity offender, then it's okay but Tina Fey and her goons were not capable of doing that. During this past election, they went after EVERYONE that was Obama's opposition, including Hilary Clinton. I won't get into Palin because it's like stating the obvious. They trashed her and since then Tina Fey is the comedy queen, as if she hasn't been around for over the past decade! Once the election was over, they no longer knew how to make political jokes, with the exception of Gov. Patterson! Caroline Kennedy made a fool of herself and SNL saw nothing funny about it. She even had an affair scandal brewing and SNL missed the humor in it. Could it be because Sweet Caroline is a memeber of the liberal family royalty? SNL claims to be the voice of the American people but they ignore the anger we all have over this administration by refusing to even poke a laugh out of it. They have proved to me and many that they are a part of the liberal media machine that just may have played a part in Obama's election win and the economic turmoil we are currently in. I think you are being too kind to Loren. He's the boss and he knows what his writers are doing.
P.S. Late night television has yet to make fun of Obama's tax-evading administration and that ridiculous bill. I guess it's not funny unless it's Bush. Aren't they supposed to "entertaining" us?
Obviously we disagree about what is funny. I think SNL has been horribly dull and unfunny for the past five years or so and I stopped watching it on a regular basis two years ago. Each time I've tuned in since then, my decision to stop watching has been confirmed, even when Steve Martin was hosting.
NBC couldn't care less what we, the viewers, think of the show. I know this for a fact because I sent a much more scathing and direct letter to some V.P. tool in charge of late night programming and his charming response summarized the glory days of SNL (you know, when it was funny?) and signed off with "sorry you won't be along for the ride next season." Code for "…and the horse you rode in on."
NBC/SNL made fun of Bush and Palin, but apparently The Messiah is off-limits. Good for them. I'm not watching and apparently neither is much of America.
Steven, Your hired. Report for duty tomorrow.
Lorne
Just kidding. Great letter tho…:)
Steve, the time is now to make your own version of SNL online. Fageddabout, Lorne Michaels et al and get together with the other conservative comedians and make your own show. Perhaps, pjtv could carry it on Saturday nights. Let the old media dinosaur go extinct. You are a funny and courageous guy. Good luck, man.
You'd think Lorne would learn his lesson from that magical night back in September when SNL had its highest ratings in 14 years. Who was the guest that week? Ooooooooooh, Barracuda!
You know, Mr. Crowder, I've watched a few of your videos, and they're very well put-together, and you have good delivery and excellent timing. A lot of your jokes are pretty funny, too. In short, while I'm not particularly in accord with politics, I think you've got talent. Which is why it's kind of a shame that you're pulling a Rupert-Pupkin-like stunt such as this. It's not gonna work. And I'm not sure you, or your audience here, wants it to work. More like you just want to stoke more resentment at those liberal big media scum, etc., etc. A shame, really.
I guess I'm the oddball. Though I watched SNL I was more of a Second City TV guy.
SNL was never funnier than SCTV.
Steve, I don't think you'll get a response . Great letter though.
That was the point I was going to make. Dennis Miller is always complimenting Lorne about being a smart businessman and all, but it should be obvious to anyone with a better than room temperature IQ that alienating 1/2 your potential audience is a bad move. They finally get great ratings for Palin, then write mediocre skits for her (although the Todd dance made me laugh), then go right back to their full-time job (carrying water for the Dems). They loved to go after Clinton (both of them), but wet their pants at the suggestion of calling Obama on the carpet. You can't be funny if you're afraid to upset your hero.
They wouldn't even have to attack Obama directly (although it would be easy for anyone with comedy writing chops). Dennis had a great suggestion for a skit with the loser from the town hall (the one who couldn't find a better job than McDonalds after 4 years). He thought they could do An Officer And A Gentlemen knock-off, with Barack picking up the stoner and carrying him from the town hall (to the strains of the band and cheering onlookers). Even if you're pathetic enough to not be able to find humor in Barack's behavior, how can you not find it in the goofs around him (especially the press corp)?
Lorne, if you're reading this…..fire all your writers and start over. The cast is talented, but the writing is as bad as I've ever seen it.
SNL became another tiny cog in the big liberal media machine a long time ago. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they were subsidized by the Democratic party.
The line was "Those aren't pillows!"
What about having Gov. Paterson come out and help him when the prompter goes out? Wait that won't work; they have only one white guy that they use to portray the two most prominent black politicians in the news.
I don't watch SNL for one reason; it's boring. If there's any reason to watch (certainly not for comedic value), it would be as an observer of liberals in a controlled habitat, kind of like going to the zoo. Now, the real funny part is seeing how deluded they are. These people think they are entertainers when, in fact, they are propagandists masquerading as entertainers. They've sold their souls for politics, hence, the propaganda is the 'art' and THAT is what drives them, not comedy. The agenda is oh so obvious and that is tedious and boring.
And it's true that they can't change because they will absolutely lose their monolithic audience. Their audience is there for the exact same reason and it isn't comedy; it's for reinforcement.
Hey… Norm McDonald was the funniest guy SNL ever had.
Man, people just don't appreciate dry humor anymore.
It's salvageable, they just need a lot of fresh blood. I'd also suggest:
1. Cut the length of the segments dramatically.
2. Drop the recurring characters, that's just a crutch and they're not funny.
3. Get a diversity of political views, religious views, geographic views, and INTERESTS — it feels like the show won't do anything they don't read about in the NY Times.
4. Stop being worried about offending people and take risks again.
Crowder if you get the job I just might start watching SNL again! Haven't tuned in for years.
My favorite late night show is Red Eye! "If comedy were tai chi, Asian women would line up and do HIM in the park!" And they don't even have writers.
LOL!! I'll second that!
This is bull…..What about all the Clinton gags when he was in office? They can't all have come from the conservative camp.
Please put to rest the idea that Liberals cannot laugh at their 'leaders'. Give it time. They'll have to lampoon Obama and Biden eventually.
I'm not sure what night it's on, but you could probably ask 411. Sorry, I don't have the number for them.
And if they do lampoon Obama or Biden there will be a post on here saying that SNL went 'soft' on them and that it 'wasn't funny enough'
i'll bet good money on it.
Have SNL ever claimed to be 'fair and balanced'? Do they claim to be equal? Not really. Then there is no reason for them to bow to ANY pressure to equally attack Obama as they did Bush. From the sounds of it noone here watches it anyway so it's not like they're going to lose any viewers.
They have no obligation to lampoon Obama. The only obligation they have it to write good comedy…which they seem to be failing at.
The Clinton gags were all superficial. The libs tread very carefully with him. The only time they truly unleash on a liberals is when the liberal is completely disgraced and becomes an unperson — and those attacks are viciously personal.
Saturday Night live has been awful for years. All the canned laughter in the world can't make the lame jokes and banal mockeries work.
He doesn't need to stoke anything. Or haven't you been paying attention?
No, he's not dead. But it is a little hard to tell.
Actually, if you want to be technical about it, they don't have any obligation to write good comedy either.
It would also help if, you know, they actually had funny people on the show.
I'm a Bobby Jindal partisan (at least for now). But I could come up with a very funny skit based on his performance responding to the non-State of the Union address. I think it's because we conservatives are capable of doing what the liberals can't do. That is to see the humor in almost anything. Even other conservatives. In fact, I think I'll write a skit right now about Michael Steele, complete with hip-hop music. Of course I could also write a pretty funny skit about Snoop Dog becoming a Muslim. So much material. So little time.
I'm with you!
Let's make a rule. We can NEVER criticize another private comedy source for not doing enough jokes about liberals. ENOUGH. We're conservatives. They have a right to do whatever they want. And worst of all, the couple of articles have been patently wrong. Both SNL and the Onion DESTROY liberals some times. And SNL DOES have a conservative writer (Jim Downey) Also, one of the McCain girls interned there. It's clear they have a bias but it's like 60/40 or 70/30. It's okay to point this bias out some times but we have only course of action as conservatives DO IT OURSELVES. We believe in the right of anyone who pays their own money and runs their own business to do what they damned well please.
They did have one good Clinton gag right after the impeachment– when Clinton got off. I think it was Darryl Hammond that was doing Clinton at the time. Anyway, they showed a press conference and Clinton(Hammond) walked up, used the thumb-up hand gesture that Clinton was known for and simply said "I. Am. Bulletproof." That cracked me up.
Here's the real answer.
Red Eye
South Park
1/2 Hour News Hour
Mind of Mencia
King of the Hill (Ever seen their carbon credits episode?)
The Goode Family (New Mike Judge show – Google it)
Penn & Teller BS
Scrapple Face
The Peoples Cube
Newsbusted
Evan Sayet
Stephen Crowder
Jack Simmons
Move On Already.org
Cheryl Underwood
Yet somehow the Clinton years had some of the best material the show'd had since the early (and mid, Eddie Murphy, Crystal, Short, Guest) years. Of course, having comic genius Phil Hartman (RIP) in the cast helped tremendously.
Also funny, me misspelling Steven Crowder and Sheryl Underwood.
Yeah, Palin whined so much about Tina Fey that she went on the show and, while they were making fun of her, basically said "no hard feelings".
Pete, that has to be one of the least informed Internet posts ever.
Meh. They won't care. They're a bunch of left wing liberal hacks that like brainwashing the country with their political views. God forbid they make the Obama administration look like a joke. Cuz that would be racist!
you sir are right on the money. I commend you.
dear mr michaels,
i agree with this chowder guy! i don't think the angry far right wing that no one cares about is getting a fair shake on your picture show.
everyone loves comedy legends such as rush limbowls, michele mallkin, and anne coulders, right? their hilarious antics keeps america in stitches.
this chowder guy could be the next bill o'really/buck owens/sean manatee/chucks norris/larry the cable guy.
teh 'hee-haw' market has be ignored too long! it's a gold mine i tells ya! a gold miiiiiiiiiiiiine!
The post about my misspelling got moved around from how I posted it. See me misspell those names later…or I'm psychic.
Making jokes about Biden and not BHO is the comedic equivalent of a punt, a copout. It's easy to riff on Biden, from asking a handicapped man to stand up to forgetting the "website number" of a government site. Irreverence and humor will only be valid if they go after Obama himself.
Steven, you might as well have written your letter in pig-Latin or in the ancient language of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Nice try but do you honestly think SNL is going to alter their political agenda? That would require them to make at least half of their skits funny again. Don't hold your breath.
http://the100mostannoyingthings.blogspot.com/
The lack of brainwave activity confuses everyone.
SNL has only remained on the air for the last 10 years because people keep tuning in with the hopes that it will be funny again. As soon as it adopted an overt political agenda it became quite boring. I don't mind my guy being made into a joke but 9 years of "Bush is an idiot" jokes is weak and boring.
Also note that SNL has always portrayed GOP presidents (Ford, Reagan, Bush, Bush II) as morons while Dem presidents are shown as too smart or unable to relate to the masses only because we are idiots who don't know any better (Carter, Dukakis). The only exception was Clinton who brought on the easiest and most varied barbs, not to mention being portrayed by one of SNL's finest performers, the late, great Phil Hartman. Hartman's wife deserves a special place in hell.
Whatever happened to Iraqi Pete?
I stopped watching SNL years ago and have no intention of going back. I have no desire to see hate disguised as comedy and that's what they have become really good at. They mock and ridicule anyone who's not a Leftist. NBC and MSNBC are failing in the markets and they don't seem to understand why: their message is no longer relevant to most Americans.
How about a letter to Leno? I quit watching his and the other late night shows because the jokes used hate and discrimination to be funny. Then my husband turned it on during the writer's strike, it was great! He told jokes that didn't attack 50% of the country for a punchline. When his writers came back, the jokes went back to the same old hate you see on every other late night show – so I don't watch anymore.
Good luck with getting this point across. Don't think you're gonna be able to do it, but nice try. But it does give me a chance to suggest my favorite Biden Boner as a skit.
Before the election last Fall, Biden sat down down with Katie Couric and he was telling her that we needed stronger leadership from the White House regarding the financial crisis, then in its infancy. He proceeded to tell her all about the crash of 1929 and how scared the American people were. And that's when Franklin Roosevelt got on TV and spoke to the people to calm their fears!
Franklin Roosevelt. President. 1929. TV.
And this was right after the infamous edited-for-worst-effect interview with Palin. Hey Lorne, what would your writers have done with Palin if she made that mind bending statement?
Why isn't SNL funny anymore? Parody is funny. Propaganda isn't.
As for some right of center comedians he can think of:
Nick Dipaolo
Jim Norton
Colin Quinn
Louis CK (though barely right of center, but hilarious)
Brian Regan
All hilarious, and all somewhat right of center. Also as honorable mentions:
Patrice O'neil
Bill Burr
They're not even close to "right of center" but their hilarious and at least intellectually honest so I'd be willing to bet they'd take shots at the Admin if they do something stupid.
I think its very ironic how this comedy show takes itself so seriously. A show meant to be funny through insensitivity and mockery now thinks of itself as a legitimate news source. Until the cast and writers learn how to be funny men again, primarily by being equal opportunity offenders, I won't watch.
I think they fear not being to draw liberal actors and actresses to host the show if they are critical of Obama the Chosen One. How horrible would it be if George Clooney and John Cusack never again hosted SNL? What would we do? I can't think of anything worse, even if an asteroid smacked into the earth………….
It's hard to be funny when you're busy kissing a politician's ass (or politicians' asses) and taking orders (whether from the Chairman or out of the "manifesto").
SNL ceased to be relevant when they ceased to be relevant.
What I'd really like to see is Fox TV (not Fox News, but the same network that came on the scene late and kicked the big three's butt(s)) work up competition for SNL (They could call it Saturday Night Comes Alive Again) and do what SNL should be doing, i.e. lampooning WHOEVER is fodder whichever party they are from. They could start with contacting Steve, getting his list of comedians and making a pilot. Given their innovative shows' ratings, I'd bet it would be a smash. There are fully half a country out here — the half that pays its bills, mortgages and 80% of the taxes ergo fodder for advertisers —
WAITING for Saturday night to be resurrected.
I'm with you man.
That would be awesome! They need some of this stuff on SNL.
i have friends thatsay SNL stopped being funny after dan aykrotd left…true. it hasn't been funny for years..in fact..it sucks.! and i turned it on a while ago, and it was so BAD, i shut off my tv dish system for good. anything can be watched fr free now on the web, but why waste your time with such drivel. you made fun of Bush..now make fun of the clown with no birth certificate born in kenya..now there's the jokes.but you people are too cowardly.. Comedy is bravery!..you people suck!
I wouldn't be so proud about Mind of Mencia.
And Dan Aykroyd stopped being funny about seven years after he left SNL. It doesn't look well for SNL that he could get along better without them than they without him.
Fluffers don't fluff pillows
Steven, I hope you get the job, but just in case, I hope your house is paid for. I see a fine future in fast food for you if you piss-off the wrong schmuck.
I did not say that.
SNL is just not funny anymore, especially when it comes to policitcal humor..Sorry
Lorne – listen to Steven.
dcase, I've gathered that's the Michaels support of McCain was simply a "rumour" that was an attempt to play into the Palin appearance?
But one would only hope Stephen that Mr. Michaels would take your letter to heart… Personally, Des has it right.. fire the writers and start fresh!
Well, Michelle is obviously on streroids. Got them from Barry Bonds I hear. Then, there is BO;s remarkable resemblence to Curious George, the great children's storybook character. Then there are the ears. There is a rumor about a tail to, but I digress.
Pull that ear piece from Patterson and he is so toast.
Agreed. They stopped being funny when Eddie Murphy left.
I miss Buckwheat.
How hard is it to joke up O? I'm already doing an imitation. Simply start every (and I mean EVERY sentence) with “uh” or “um” (the fabled eloquence). Also throw in plenty of “and so” segues. And one of those halos kids where in Christmas plays.
Remember folks, fire your newspapers. They can’t lie without money.
Lorne Micheals knows the left can't take a joke. He said so himself. But I think he could build a new audience of loyal fans who can take a joke. He could be the '24' of comedy.
Am I the only one who'd pay big money for a Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn DVD set? My politics are pretty middle of the road but I thought this show was hilarious and it's a shame it's been neglected by Comedy Central (couldn't they put the episodes online?).
Let them. If a guy is too big to be mocked, he's dangerous. I don't know where I read it, or if it's true, but there was something about Roman emperors having a guy whose sole job was to say, "Remember, you are mortal" to the emperor. Kept them grounded, or at least that was the idea. I think Nero ate him.
The Onion has started doing stuff like that. "Obama daughters see Creepy Bush Twins in hallways at night."
I dare someone to make an "Obama or Chimp" website. You'd get more hits than google once Rev Al found out. You could retire off the ad revenue.
Can Snoop still smoke now? Muslims take a dim view on alcohol, I wondered if that tranlated to other stuff…
Tina Fey wins awards over the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke because she mocked a female candidate that has real potential and made her look like a rambling boob in time for the election. That's fine. That got Fey invited to all the liberal parties in Hollywood. MSNBC ran her skit several times rather than the actual interviews. Yet Palin made Biden look like an idiot (not hard) in real life without a team of SNL writers and was the only member of either choice who wasn't a multimillionaire. She never cried like Hillary did. She only voiced her complaints AFTER the election was over and they were legit complaints. This GOVERNOR just had so much less experience than our Community Organizer in-chief, THE ONE who voted "present", yet how is he working out for us? Ted Kennedy in a coma could do better than Obama has done. But no, we are still running skits about Palin and her family.
Good job Steve, I agree 100%. I have been waiting to see someone bring up Biden's "internet number" blunder. If Bush had said that, he would have been crucified on SNL.
Lorne respect your viewers man…steven crowder is dead funny and Obama needs some needle pricks to deflate that GINORMOUS ego of his…Joe too is a goldmine of foot in his mouth moments!
One word about Michelle…Linebacker
If there is to be "equality" in all things, this would be the SNL version of the fairness doctrine…. it's only fair. But we have to remember that Hollywood is the most unequal bunch of people I have ever worked with.
Amen
And my husband heard that Akroyd didn't even know who Boener was, but he was playing him. That's just sloppy. You'd think they'd do some minimal research at least.
SNL wasn't even ON in the early '70s (first show was in Oct. 1975), and didn't really get great until now-looks-like Cheney Chase thankfully left to be a complete tool…
Since when has Tina Fey "competed" against the likes of the way-cool RDJ and Rourke? Usually she's in categories w/the likes of America Ferrera (like SHE'S a great talent? Don't be fooled by her name) and Christina Applegate (like her, not so much her show); now if she ends up winning awards over Amy Poehler, then we'll have a legit beef…
There's ALWAYS OxyCotin, not to mention "prescribed" Viagra!
How about just getting, oh I don't know, a BLACK comedian (or a half-black one if you're that much of a stickler for details) , since they got about 26 white guys on the show already…and some spell-check for you would aslo be helpful
HOMOSEXUAL stuff? C'mon. Terry Sweeney wasn't THAT bad!
My husband and I used to set aside time to watch Tough Crowd. That show was awesome.
He looks like Dick Cheney at this point; I'll leave it up to you to decide whether or not he's better off..
There are plenty of things they could make fun of with BO: he walked into a window thinking it was a door, he's sensitive about his big ears, he got the cover of a fitness magazine as a smoker, he hit his head on the door of Marine 1, if he has no teleprompter he can barely string two words together through the "uhs" and "ums," the embarrassing tendencies his townhall meetings have to break down into handout sessions like a bad Jerry Springer episode , and so on a so forth …
For the record, John Cusack has NEVER hosted SNL; that is not a complaint BTW, just something that needed to be put out…
Yeah, that really worked well w/MadTV, didn't it?
P.S. Please excuse my grammar. I was diving for a Styrofoam cup Barack Obama had graced with his lips during the campaign, and the sheer Messiah-ness of his presence gave me brain damage. By the way, I think Jimmy Fallon is a consummate professional.
Love,
Revhatchell
If Mind(less) of Menstealia is the "answer", the question must be beyond defective!
All kidding aside, the real problem with SNL is the lack of writers and performers with real world experience. The humor is all based off stuff they saw on TV, not what they saw in everyday life. It's the same pop-culture oriented garbage you get from this entire generation. They went to the same colleges, had the same upbringing, and have the same sense of humor, hence, as one other commenter noted, it appears they get their inspiration from whatever is in the New York Times that day.
Seriously, how does anyone who doesn't pay attention to politics or works for a living supposed to relate to anything on SNL? Other than the need to set Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon on fire.
Steve Crowder would be great on SNL. I also think SNL should hire Iowahawk too. Both are producing hilarious comedy and satire.
The funniest Clinton skit was the take-off on "Cops" when John Goodman as a law officeer got a domestic situation call to the White House. Phil Hartman was Clinton in a wife-beater T-shirt and Jan Hooks was Hillary ,who was obviously the one doing the "abusing." Brilliant!
I'm laughing at just your description of it, so there you go!
I'm with you on that one, Bill. I am a night time radio listener because I don't sleep well. It got to a point before the election that I dreaded my normal 5 a.m. sleeplessness Sunday mornings because the radio station I listened to actually did a review of the SNL skit parodying Sarah. It was mildly amusing the first time they did it, but a few weeks into it, I started to get mad. It was literally an in depth analysis of the hilarity of the skit, complete with a panel discussing it. If it made ME that mad, I can't imagine how it felt to be one of the Palin family!
It was funny exactly once, but quickly crossed the line.
Mencia, like Chris Rock, made his name by being very un-PC about race and other issues. But the more famous they've become, the more they've toed the line.
Chris Rock, for example, would never tell his cryptonite/books joke today, but he did at one time.
SNL will never do it. Lorne Michaels has too many "Yes" men surrounding him telling him how great he is and how good SNL is(was). Like George Lucas he will continue to put out a shadow of his shows former self till he either dies or they cancel it for ratings.
SNL funny? Only to liberals. Lorne is just another sold out Jew to parrot the liberal ideologue or lose his job or Jew status.
Good call Steven. I agree 100%. Heck SNL, even if you are in bed with Obama, what kind of relationship is it if you don't turn the screws a little. He who doesn't laugh at the follies of life is due for a massive heart attack. But then again, I guess if you slobber over the "messiah" you would consider it sacrilege to poke fun at the "holy one."
Come on, SNL, get funny again.
I thought I was the only one that thought SNL is in a rut. I dont think its the political sketches that makes it bad it is the writing, the constant Sketches that dont know when or how to end, and the pandering to tweens really? JONAS BROTHERS? really? really? I try to watch I do and I want to laugh I really do but I can't . Where is the funny SHOW ME THE FUNNY! The cast while not the best but is very capable of being funny just give them something funny and not from the front page of tiger beat. I dont know everything not even close this is just my opinion but I'll leave with one example The Cougar Den 2 weeks ago was horrible not that 40 something women on the prowl isnt funny it is can be but rather than making it a "talk show" just do a sketch about cougars. stop making every character you have into "shows" and to the writers its OK to say YES to insanity.(improv 101)
I think that's you also added a key in there Steve that's been kind of overlooked.
There were certain SNL actors who were "untouchable" (very few, but some). Phil Hartman.. IMO, was an 'untouchable" guy. He and probably Farley were the two that SNL wouldn't have done a thing too, regardless of what they did on air. Hartman could have lambasted anyone on air and NBC wouldn't have touched him (unlike what Norm got).
Nobody on the current SNL roster is that 'protected' in anyway whatsoever, so with the weak writing, nobody's going to even take the chance.
Very funny…. Steven probably hasn't a prayer. But he's right. Obama worship has killed mainstream political humor.
Just so you know, here in Michigan, a little town named Hell did freeze over this winter, so here's to hoping!
Yes…Yes you are..
Haha…just kidding, I'd love to have a tough crowd DVD set. Interestingly enough about Tough Crowd, it wasn't just neglected it was canceled. I don't remember the story exactly but the reason it was canceled was because comedy central didn't feel that liberals were well represented on the show and wanted to force Colin to have a more liberal viewpoint on issues and he wouldn't go for it. Quinn is on Opie & Anthony a decent amount and that's where I heard the story.
It was a great show but Comedy Central just like just about every other network out there is run by liberals who would rather have their agenda pushed than to have quality programming.
I agree. I can't remember the last time i watched SNL. I have the golden oldies on dvd and every once in a while you hear about a funny bit to watch on youtube, but a whole episode? Nope. I think it may be time to take the gloves off and actually make some jokes about our CURRENT administration. Someone let us know if this ever happens, because i won't be watching to find out.
Lorne simply is not funny anymore. Or maybe SNL was only funny when I was unemployed and stoned?
One or the other. Don't expect liberals to ever bite their master's hand though.
Maybe we WERE liberals back when we thought SNL was funny. I grew up. But SNL is still for children. You can only be politically naive once, but that does not prohibit people from staying permanently "naive".
Saw a bunch of magazine covers in the grocery store with Michelle Obama on the cover wearing sleeve outfits in the middle of the winter, and no comparisons to Larry the Cable Guy? Come on, get with it!
I like it… could go with the parody on the parody "Michelle Obama – White House Linebacker"… and she could go around the country tackling guys like Rick Santelli… that would be great… and it would play on the stronghold this White House has on the media
I really think SNL botched it when they didn't make fun of Baghdad Bob. Such an easy skt, and their Bush derangement syndrome wouldn't let them do it, just 18 months after their wonderful Rumsfeld press conference.
Also think they should have run The Autobahn Diaries, but that might have gone over most people's heads.
Dawn,
Personally, I can't look at Turbo Timmay w/o thinking of Spock. Same eyebrows, same ears.
The only thing I ever laughed out loud about on Mencia was the skit he did parodying Kanye West. That was too funny. Other than that, uh, not so much.
Who's surprised? These people are totally out of touch with real America. Just watch the show intro–All sitting around a some shallow urban party sipping martinis & laughing. (duh) Oh yes, that is what most REAL people are doing right now. They're nearly as clueless as the morons in D.C.!
This Obama administration has already demonstrated such a thin-skin–they can't take constructive random criticism without getting all bristled. (Hmmm, what about legitimate dissenting voices that were supposed to be welcomed? I think I heard something about that in some inauguration speech recently….) People are usually most defensive when they're CLUELESS and/or LYING.
So nobody wants to risk upsetting 'The Chosen One," not even in the name of humor. So just let SNL fade away–they've outlived their usefulness.
The fact that they haven't taken on the Kennedys over the years (esp. Driver Ted) is distressing, just for the lost opportunities; to Jon Stewart's credit, he has taken on the tax evaders…
Well, he tends not to repeat his bits year after year; it's called writing new material…and Mencia should NEVER be mentioned in the same breath as Larry the Cable Guy, let alone Chris Rock!
Hi, I have worked in Hollywood for many years and I am not an easily offended person. After many years of enjoying SNL, beginning with the original cast, I had to call it quits after the Fey – Palin skits. Personally, with all that's going on in the US and the world, and the potential to go on… I take the future of my family and my country very serious. A few wrong moves and the way of life we enjoy can be gone forever. As such, I did not find those skits particularly funny, even though I personally liked Fey. They just came across as political propaganda and not mere comedy. NBC,, had again become agents of influence / political operatives. Perhaps if the comedy had been more even handed, I would have taken it in good fun, but it was not. And to date is still not. This is disgusting. If the US fails, thanks to Obama's re-ordering, people like Mr. Michaels are going to curse the day they so flippantly handled matters. Trust me Mr. Michaels, the country goes down thanks to your boy, it's gonna come back at you in unimaginable ways. The people who truly love this country are not going to just roll over.
The Clinton skit where he was campaigning in the fast food joint was a classic.
At least they put on/still have South Park, give them that much…
The problem with the Left is that they are the most intellectually insular group, refusing to engage in honest debate — which is why, more and more over time they resemble a cult. For example, we have abundant evidence that Obama probably never took (or if he did take, never got a passing grade) in Econ 101. Why should he bother to learn about those silly unimportant kapitalist concepts like price-to-earnings ratios? He has a world to villagize, class war to wage, and letters to write to Russia. (Plus, swag to grab and share with his cronies.)
Anyhow, my point was that SNL and the Left doesn't hesitate to be viciously racist/sexist when going after their targets (conservatives).
[...] Crowder wrote a letter to Lorne Michaels offering his services to help SNL make fun of Obama and thus appealing to huge [...]
How about Obama's punchline "Yes We Can." Not original. It was already famous to millions of kids and parents as "Bob the Builders" theme song.
How about Barack and Bob do the song as a duet? (Okay, Bob is an animated character, but that's what costumes and makeup are for.)
Or Bob and Barack – with autocues – debate who deserves bragging rights to that phrase.
Might get a laugh. Just trying to help.
I agree 100%.
Having worked at a comedy club for over 20 years. I know many WHO wont do SNL. They rather do Comedy Central. More are tuning into CC then SNL. Plus they don't fear the Network telling them what they can and can't say or use. A comedy friend, once told me that he was the middle act for Kathy Griffin (?), he had a lot of gay jokes that poked (pardonthe pun) of things gays do, not put downs of them. She told him before they went on stage, NOT to do any Gay Jokes. So he and the first comdiean out, did 75% gay jokes. Well you can sit back and hear her yelling at these two. It was a " I'm a bigger comedian then you so DON'T do Gay jokes Ever!:. Both were on the road with her for about 3 other shows and left.
If any one want to catch really good upcoming comedians, go to Comedy Central. Guys like Greg Warren, Bob Zany, Mike Lukas, Al Katz, Charlie Murphy-Eddies Brother- will do CC. Many staying away from SNL. Lets face it, I can tell you who will win any of the Last Comic Standing before the season end. I know most of the comedians that make this show. OH yeah NBC owns that show, Hmm SNL-Last Comic Standing.hmmm
Otay BuckWheat.. Yeah that was the good years for SNL.Now they just redoing stuff they have done before with a different person doing it. Change the name, but redo's. Man I miss NRFPT guys..
Basball ben berry berry god to me.. When Basball berry berry good to me, my wife berry berry go to me. Yeah those days.
It's not funny and the TV show 30 Rock. Sorry not funny. Rather watch Lost or Scrubs or Jennifer Love on Ghost. OK I know they are not on when 30 Rock is. Shows how much I watch NBC.
they did. It was Called MAD TV! It had some of the funniest young comedians on it. I mean Frank C is one of the best. His Madden just kills me. His Bush was on mark. Each and everything he did was on . So if we want to see some funny. We have Frank TV. Sad that Fox took Mad Tv off.
SNL lost it's edge a long time ago. Even Jon Stewart's show is failing because he can't take on Obama. The Colbert Report is the new reality. He makes fun of liberals and conservatives both. The difference is that conservatives can take the joke and laugh at themselves (just look at Palin's appearance on SNL), while liberals are thin-skinned and simply lack any self-depreciation abilities. They take themselves much too serious, which is why the above SNL ideas – while great – would never fly.
p.p.s. whew! that was scary. the styrofoam cup is okay. i'll just put it next to my "gw koozie".
p.p.p.s. why don't you ever do any hilarious sketches about water boarding, renditions and black prisons? don't you care about american values?

Lorne Micheals was pretty good on Gunsmoke. Or was it that show where they burned a map at the beginning?
Bravo! Go for it!
That's true, except they whispered, "All glory is fleeting" — sic transit gloria mundi.
Why not do a skit where they change it to "Sure why not?" That could be pretty funny.
My comment above was in reference to the SNL skit of an Obama and Hillary debate during the Democrat Primary. That skit actually started Obama's slide in the polls and primaries, as it put the media on the spot. Hillary almost caught up to, and would have surpassed Obama, but the Democrat Party Big Shots stepped in and saved Obama. The skit is available here… http://www.alternet.org/blogs/video/77752/
Don't do it, Crowder! You leave us for SNL and where will we go for our YouTube hillarity?! You know those punks are going to dumb you down, force you to censor yourself, refuse to let you talk about the REAL mockability in this administration!
and… and… we'll MISS you and stuff! ::sniffles::
Is the latest SNL fat guy dead yet?
What SNL needs most is to pull their collective nose out of the Obamessiah's buttcrack. I'd also like to see them stop beating the same tired old ideas to death. Once something gets a laugh, like Debbie Downer for example, they just use it and use it and use it until it's a.) as predictable as the sunrise, and b.) NOT FUNNY.
I thought his bit about Mexicans naming their kids Jesus was pretty funny, and how he suggested getting all the illegal aliens on the other side of the wall they'd just built. He's had a couple of good bits. But his latest piece was really angry and leftwing.
No, he starred in 'Have Pun Will Travel' (but not very far). LOL.
Barack Hussein Obama has responded to all the complaints about Michelles fashion sense. He said, "What's all this fuss about Michelle's sleeveless dresses? Doesn't the Constitution guarantee us the right to bare arms?"
Meanwhile, SNL is STILL taking shots at George W. Bush. Stupid Liberals!
It is simply un-cool for SNL to make fun of Liberals. Being that SNL was recently dubbed (by Liberals) as being COOL AGAIN for poking fun at Sarah Palin, I highly doubt they will risk that title being revoked.
Liberals control the media; the media controls the thoughts of the masses. Lorne understands this and fears them as much as he benefits from them.
A personal note to Lorne: Dude; grow a pair!
Kathy Griffin is a horrid, whiny, surgery-addicted troll who has NO business telling other people how to do or what to say in their act (isn't that…CENSORSHIP?); she's long overdue for a Celbutard of the Week (although she's really more of a Celebridouche) citation!
Great article, all except for that "squash my nuts into oblivion" line. If you have a real job, or any intestinal fortitude, as Gorilla Monsoon used to say, then Lorne has no such power over you or your nuts. I say, "just try to squash my nuts, Lorne, and you'll wish I was Chuck Norris, because as bad-ass as he is, the beating you'll get from me will be double!"
Man their is more I can say on her, but wont waste my time. From all I have seen and heard from many comedians, she is not easy to work around. OH their will be a few that will for the PR vaule they can get from it. You know the " I open for Kathy Griffin" kinds, but many don't care one way or the other. Bob Newhart was on Leno the other night. He said it is always better to be kind to those below you, since you will see them on your way down. So far he has not had that problem, but she is in the boat of being still caught in the middle. She was in my home town not long ago for a show. I didn't go, but did hear from a few budys that did. They thought she is HOT. Well they left way before the show was over. Couldn't put up with her comedy crap.
My one comedian friend who tour with her, laughed at how she stayed away from him and the opther comic after the first night. I don't care if she is friends with Gays or not, she has to learn that many of us don't want her type of humor and that soon she will not have anyone to pay to see her. Thus her Being on the D LIST!
In all fairness, Affirmative Action demands that SNL start making some Obama jokes
Gig on both of 'em. Same show. Same time. …different locations, of course. We wouldn't want fake Pelosi to become master of the house if something *ahem* "bad" happened during a skit.
As heard on the Hugh Hewitt Show today – How about a bit where everyone in the Obama family used teleprompters to speak around the house because they are otherwise inept to speak any other way.

SNL hasn't been funny since the days of my youth… Belushi, Aykroyd, Curtain. Well, there was Eddie Murphy in the 80's… but not since.
Didn't A/G Holder say we are a "nation of cowards", because we don't openly talk about race. What a perfect opportunity to open the lines of communication.
Politicians should have a thick skin to absorb a little kidding around. It's part of the job. The ability, not to take yourself so seriously. But lately, thats been a stretch for him. Way too self important.
Unless all that white guilt prevents people from being funny. Comedy is color blind anyway, funny is funny, however you color it.
Steven Crowder you are a comic genius. Love your videos. Good luck to you, in all your future endeavors.
I had this same thought. It would also be funny to have Biden or Hillary or Michelle sneak in and type stuff on the prompter (instead of GW).
Kleiner, That is way too funny! Good Job . Heck BO does a worst job of speaking in public then GWB did. Heck at least Bush laughed at his misspeaks. Is that not what he used? Misspeaks.
OK, right away—the second thing you said was, "…this man could crush my nuts into oblivion".
No, he can't.
WHY DO YOU GIVE HIM THAT POWER?
That's why conservatives can't get, and don't deserve, respect in the industry. Hollywood sees right through this. You don't want to topple the beast; you don't want to slay the dragon; you want to suckle at its teat.
(That's a collective "you", not directed at Mr. Crowder, who is certainly talented enough to be a part of the cast).
This is coming from a conservative who is sick to death of the half-assed malaise embodied by Roger Simon et al. You–we—could build our own castle better than anything Uglywood ever built, but I doubt we can respect our own efforts, simply because they are ours. We don't think of ourselves as worthy, and once that stops, we can quit CRYING about the other side and build our own.
The problem, for our side, isn't content; it's capital, marketing, and distribution. But nobody wants to get involved in those things because……?
……????
Steven, you would be the only reason I'd tune into SNL. Honestly.
I disagree with one point in your letter, the cast is not good nor talented. They are people attempting to imitate past successful casts of the show and failing miserably for being unoriginal. This cast is reminiscent of the R. Downey Jr. Anthony Michael Hall era (or errr blip).
NBC are cowards to the left and to democrats if there is one thing you can not be in comedy it is a coward.
Good job. Great letter! not snippy at all. Too bad SNL is hardly aware of how liberal they really are.
Oh! AND, I forgot to add one more skit possibility…
Remember all these recent international, diplomatic gaffs…?
Holy cow! There's a gold mine of ideas.
(True: Obama snubbed PM Brown; Hillary tells Israel to help rebuild Hamas infrastructure; Hillary's token to the Russians has a misspelling on it.)
Yowzers, my friends! How about a Three-Stooges-esque romp by the STate Dept? Slaps, and two-by-fours to the head, pies in the face, seltzer bottles, trips, giving some Premier a wedgie, telling coarse jokes at a black-tie affair. (I'm sure you guys at SNL know some coarse jokes.) Hillary getting drunk and hitting on some sheik.
It just freakin' writes itself.
But, ya gotta be a gutsy professional to take that step.
(ACK! I just experienced my first "over-writing" of my postings!)
Ya know, I already have the image in my head of an as-yet-unmade SNL-esque skit wherein a peon is trailing Pres. Obama while carrying his teleprompter. To top-secret meetings, to cabinet meetings, through the halls of the White House while hobnobbing with tourists, into the kitchen for a snack… all the while being dogged by his teleprompter-toting-intern. Cramming into a limo, reading to his kids, trash-talking on the basketball court, singing in the shower, pillow-talking with his wife.
C'mon… I'm just a computer guy, and even I can come up with a baseline for a great skit here!
Then… what about a "gift exchange" skit?
France gave us the Statue of Liberty; we gave them a toy horsie, carved from a piece of wood. China gives us a priceless 3,000-year old vase; we give them a vacuum cleaner with a pet-hair attachment. Germany gives us a jewel-encrusted sword used in some ceremony from some by-gone dynasty; we give them a complete set of Slim Whitman albums… AUTOGRAPHED!
It is just too easy. But, I suppose you gotta be willing to mock The Chosen One. Hard to do in those upper-echelons of Tolerance.
