Lonewolf Diaries: A Letter to Lorne Michaels (Official Petition)
by Steven CrowderCopied below is the ACTUAL letter that I sent to and was signed for by Lorne Micheals (and assistant) today over at NBC. I know that the writing is a little less snippy than usual, but please take into account that this man could squash my nuts into oblivion. There’s plenty of room for suggestions, so I encourage you to chime in. And bear in mind, Lorne may be stopping by here.
Dear Mr. Michaels
I write this letter not as a disgruntled fan, but as a true admirer of what SNL stands for (and as a fellow Canadian/American). We both know how popular it is to mutter things like “I liked SNL, back when it was good” or “SNL used to be cool, but now their writing sucks etc.” Trust me; I’m as annoyed by those folks as you are. I truly believe that you have one of the most talented casts ever assembled over there at NBC.
I not only love your show, but I love the principal of a weekly program centered around irreverence. You folks are the jesters making fun of the king, and that’s something that a free country desperately needs. The problem is, that I don’t see much jesting anymore. You folks over at Rainbow Studio seem all too eager to get in on the “kissing of the ring” action. What’s up with that?
I would hate to see your show render itself irrelevant due to a completely one-sided cast/writing staff being totally ill-equipped to deal with the most lopsided government in American History. Don’t get me wrong, I know that it’s not entirely your fault. Being in the NBC/TV “Bubble” must make it hard to find a dissenting viewpoint. You’re surrounded by “yes men” who think of many Americans as nothing more than “people from the fly-over states”. Contrary to popular belief in NYC, there are plenty of people out there who are unhappy with this administration. If I had to put a number on it, I’d guess about 46%.
Half of the country tunes in weekly, waiting for you to take the irreverent pot-shots at the current administration that we’ve come to know and love throughout the Bush era, only to be disappointed.
I don’t know whether you find it “unpatriotic” to make fun of the current Administration, or if you honestly feel that you haven’t enough ammo. I would find the latter hard to believe considering that the country’s VP is JOE FREAKING BIDEN. The man is an absolute goldmine of material. He’s the comedic gift that keeps on giving.
However, if you folks don’t have at least one honest to God conservative on your writing staff, who is able to offer an authentically cynical view of the current Presidency, I would like to formally suggest that you do so. The quality of your show may depend on it.
Being a young Comedian who’s toured and written professionally for years, I would like to formally offer my services. Now I’m totally aware that someone over at NBC may pull the “Norm Macdonald card” on me (“You’re just not funny”), and may very well be right in doing so, which is why I have compiled a list of other thought-provoking, right-of-center comedians available upon request.
I hope you take this into consideration and I look forward to hearing from you… Or you could just write me off as some “right wing punk” with an axe to grind. That’s cool too.
God bless!
Sincerely,
Steven Crowder
PS: This letter is being posted tonight on “Big Hollywood” to tens of thousands of readers. Feel free to stop by and view their responses.
There you have it my fellow anti-establishment amigos. If you support this motion, leave a response explaining so. Also, if you feel that I’m a totally unfunny jackass who’s terribly ill-equipped for the job, feel free to suggest people who would be better.
Finally, to those of you who are happy with the status quo and DON’T support this motion… How does it feel to be The Man?

Well said Steven….maybe the SNL team doesn't want to make fun of BO, but Biden is another story all together! There are about 2 years worth of materials already from this guy and it's only 5 weeks into the administration. And for the life of my I can't figure out why they haven't done skits on Michelle's "sleeveless" hoopla! Give me a break. Let's hope Lorne has some real backbone and takes your suggestions to heart!
Steven…"PS: This letter is being posted tonight on “Big Hollywood” to tens of thousands of readers. Feel free to stop by and view their responses." Come on man…hype the machine. Try hundreds of thousands at least. He figure 95% of conservatives are in bed by ten anyway. So that leaves him with what..tens of viewers? Hype Steve…HYPE!!!
Ann Coulter at CPAC did all the Obama jokes which comedians are not doing, and was funny. She had the material to herself.
Good Idea, Let's hope he actually pops in.
Yay, you're back! Ok, you can't tell me that, even if all of the writers are liberals, they can't come up with something to joke about. Can we talk about the ears for a sec? The "omg look at my abs!" photo op in Hawaii? Or even just the msm's crapass reporting like CNN's investigation on how to get Michelle's arms? Hang on, gotta grab my barf bag, back in a sec.
What? SNL give up ragging on the conservatives??? That will be the day. I went to SNL back in the early 1970s when it was funny. Land shark, coneheads, stuff like that. I can't even watch it now and don't want to.
I was just telling my wife about how SNL could score huge laughs with skits about Obama's dependency on teleprompters. In one he could have a Ron Burgandy moment where someone (GW maybe?) sneaks in and starts typing stuff on the prompter while Obama is just reading it in his passionate style, not listening to what he is saying. Imagine the things we could have him say…..
The other is a skit showing Obama in ordinary everyday situations where he cant respond unless he is reading of the prompter…like ordering at starbucks or small talk with his driver. Have everything on the prompter. Could be funny…just imho.
I suspect it will be a cold day in H*ll before the current SNL writers take advantage of that.
I have the first year of SNL on dvd in a box set. Now THAT'S funny! I'm "matyre" enough to have seen these performed for the first time as well. Anyway, this administration is a laugh riot. From the boy president with the big ears to the doddering old senile veep to the tax evading cabinet members to the freaks that now run the congress and the senate, there is a wealth of comedic potential. Go for it!
Steven, I hope you get at least the courtesy of a response. And if you do, don't expect much more than "We won. We will trump you on that." The actual words may be different but that wiil be the underlying sentiment.
LOL man, that first one is so full of win!
Hell yeah. Great idea. Here's the prob, if they even attempt to make funny with ANY lefty, they are doomed with their left/demo audience. You cannot make fun of a Joe Biden ! it wouldn't be good for the nation. I have some very left-wing friends that canceled their LA Times subs, because they hired people like Jonah Goldberg to write a columm ONCE a week. They will not tolerate even a little descent. Forget that the cast and other writers on the show would hate it, their audience would cancel ie (turn the channel). So in the end, I'm not watching, and the people who do watch would stop if they attempt a comedy rebellion.
I'm not sure that show is salvageable. I can't say I watch more than half a dozen airings a year these days, but there's been times I've gone the whole 90 minutes without cracking a smile. usually, it's a couple chuckles and that's it. Long gone are the Eddie Murphy & co. days. There was a renaissance in the early-mid 90's with the Myers-sandler crowd and I could tolerate what followed mainly because Ferrel. But it's just pure crap now.
I think you are wasting your time, Steven. When they hosted Sarah Palin even Michaels admitted that "her politics wasn't our politics", and despite ratings that they hadn't seen in years, do you think they'd change their ways?
I stuck it though until Bill Murray, Jane Curtain, et al left (and I know there were some good times from Edie Murphy), but just telling you when I (and many others) left….
I was attracted to them for their irrelevant humor (humour for you
) – towards issues of the day, regardless of the political direction. They made fun of Ford and Carter.
And I didn't think Chevy Chase was funny even then – the most overrated "comic" I can recall. There's only so many times you can trip over a couch.
Plus I read somewhere that he got most of the cast hooked on heroin or cocaine, including John Belushi (now there was a comic)
I simply have never seen any evidence that anyone at that show has the capability to expend the amount of objectivity it would require to understand what you are suggesting, much less follow your advice. All I have ever seen is cheerleading for leftism and dripping venom for conservatism. On occasion they have given a winking, token tease to their idols, but nothing to believe the next four years will be anything but an Obama pep rally.
I wish you good luck though.
I'll believe it when I see it. SNL poke fun at The Messiah?…not likely.
when i saw "SNL" and "petition" is assumed it was for some sort of legalized assisted suicide thing.
next saturday at midnight, try being drunk in a bar for a change.
Good luck! I can't believe you even had the cajones to take it directly to Lorne. But I think it's a good thing for him to hear from someone other than a lefty sycophant. Not that you don't sound perfectly willing to kiss his boots if he hires you; I think every boss would expect it. Unfortunately, I fear that SNL is too far gone.
I am with you,Steven. I want to love SNL again. When they are on, nothing beats them.
This is what I wrote back in February: Stick to making us laugh SNL. We get how happy you are about the current administration. We get that you'd giddily drop your pants for the man if asked. I'm a big girl, I get it. I can take the hits in the sketches. But only if you make me laugh. You used to understand that. And, as your friend, I have to tell you that you come off as smirky buffoons doing a loud victory dance days after the fact. Know your role and get back to making me laugh or I am gone. Along with the droves before me.
Great letter! I hope that you at least get a response!
Biden is just BEGGING SNL to do another skit about him and he's even giving them material. The entire "I don't remember the name of the website I was here to promote on live television" and my personal favorite "Chuck stand up….oh God bless you" would be hilarious! They are there waiting to be made into a skit…which I sadly doubt will happen.
LOL. I like getting drunk at home myself
Although Michaels dismissed Palin's politics (don't laugh- most mainstream Repubs did as well) he was knocked out by her… and is, from what I can gather, a McCain supporter. Even though they are, and always have been liberal
(it is New York, after all) one guesses that as this disaster movie of a Presidency plays out more and more 'fun' will be poked at them. Joltin' Joe Biden is such a nitwit gasbag that he almost defies parody… it's tough to make fun of somebody who is already a strangeling…
I think the answer is that Conservatives can laugh at them selves and their elected officials, we don't take our selves to seriously on everything. Liberals on the other hand take them selves very seriously and can't laugh at the mistakes made by their elected officials. Unless the elected official has fallen so far out of step with their party or has been caught with his/her hand in the cookie jar. Then they can ridicule through comedy to let all of the other Democrats know where they stand in the pecking order of things. For example Blago, everyone thinks he's crazy suddenly. While I'm certain that he was just using a time honored tradition for all politicians, greed.
SNL's still on the air???? What night?
What you have to understand is that SNL plays to the home crowd — New Yorkers, and specifically those in Manhattan. The vast majority of Manhattan residents are not even vaguely familiar with conservatives or conservative thought. It’s just a political class and philosophy to be demonized. There’s no logic or thought in their coming to the conclusion that Nu Yawkas themselves are liberal. That’s just their default state of being. Of course, that jibes just fine with the entertainment/musician/Broadway/Hollywood way of thinking (or not thinking).
You can see this group go-along in the group acceptance of stupid skits on SNL itself. Where else would so many sheep crowd together and actually guffaw uproariously at frequent bits that are not really funny? Well, “in the know” and “with it” people. People who “get it” as the pre-conversion Dennis Miller said on SNL’s Weekend Update about new Prez Bill Clinton.
I agree. I have found myself not watching Saturday Night Live because the writing and subject matter has declined. Early in the Bush Administration the skits where light hearted and funny, in the last two years they were trite. A few weeks ago I tuned in to see SNL's take on the current administration and current events only to find one skit pertaining to politics. It was a hackneyed and bitter sketch with Dan Aykroid pretending to be republicans who were trying to subvert Obama. Honeslty, it could have been funny but wasn't. It sounded more like a writer getting his political rocks off in sketch form than a comedy sketch. Also, they need to stop bringing out the retreads. I get it Aykroid, Martin, etc were on the show a long time ago. That's great, but none of them have done anything funny in the last 10 years. Showcase the new talent, not the tired old talent.
Also they need to let that Andy Sandberg fellow write a few less skits. I am in my mid twenties and can't smoke pot anymore, so I like every sober person watching the show find his sketches unbearable.
my friend and i think what they need to do is use a comedian like billy krystal and color his facer black to play obama because i thinki it would be really funny. i used to love sat night live but ever since the election and what they did to gov and vice presidnt elect sara palin on their show helped the demooocrats win the election which still makes me mad. i tihink it is time we took the joke back to thiem and a classi comedian like krystal showed them what hapens when you mess with a conservative
George Bush sounds like a Midland-Odessa roustabout and to both coasts that's funny–though not to the rest of us. (Folks, that's how we talk…get over it.) Obama, on the other hand, has the flat speech patterns of Columbia School of Broadcasting grad. Where's the fun in that? Still, I'm betting he will show us plenty of opportunities for some good old fashioned ridicule. I have high hopes for the guy. Let's see if SNL will take the bait AND take off the gloves.
I think you may have hit on the real issue here. If SNL goes after the libs there will be a much larger backlash than going after the conservatives. SNL is probably afraid to take the heat from their own community. They've lost their irreverence and become totally mainstream– which is sad.
Great letter Steve. And trust me as a fellow nonconformist I agree with you. Obama and Biden both in my opinion are gifts that keep on giving. Also…an apology for Tina Fey's unfunny Palin portrayal. The hilarity lasted about a minute and then it became hateful.
And I like W's accent. But I also love cowboys. That is the accent of a manly man. Can't say that about oh Clooney, Penn, etc. You know.
The major problem with SNL this season is Seth Myers still being the head writer. He's let the seriously overrated Adam run wild with the show again this season. More Daryl Hammond please. They've relegated this talented veteran to the backburner for too long.
Literally haven't watched the show since they fired Norman. (probably not a great play bringing that incident up, BTW – not a moment Lorne should be proud of – depending on how you interpret it , he either got steamrolled by Ohlmayer, or he didn't have the guts to fire McDonald himself) Speaking of Norman, he's a staunch Pro-Lifer. You should get him on Big Hollywood. I don't think he's worried about being blacklisted at this point.
Steven, love the letter, completely with you. I know this is nit-picky but my inner grammar Nazi couldn't help but go "oh no!" at your usage of "principal" (should be "principle.") Your fans adore you either way, I just don't want to see Mr. Michaels or anyone in the future dismissing you because of it.
Keep up the great work and God bless!
Lorne is busy fluffing Obama's pillows.
drinking alone in my garage is a more productive use of time.
i am mystified why people treat saturday night live like some sort of institution. it's just another crap tv show that's run past it's useful life span. the beautiful thing about the media is that the sooner you forget it and move on, the sooner it dies.
SNL is a stinking, rotten corpse (has been for 10+ years) that refuses to fall into the grave it is poised over.
Someone give it a push, please !
I can't make it through 10 minutes of SNL. Snide mockery has become the only humor lefties can manage. Cruelty is FUNNY to them (witness the popularity of mean girls Chelsea Handler and that redhead who "loves her gays"!). They don't dare satirize their people – they'd rather make hay out of a minor republican mistep for 7 minutes. These are the same people who think criticizing christianity is "brave" but don't have the balls to niggle radical islam.
Lorne won't read your letter. He doesn't care if no one watches. He'll still get paid, and then, when
SNL is eventually cancelled he'll retire with his unredistributed income.
Don't even watch SNL anymore. Got sick of the Bush Bashing and the Homosexual stuff all the time.
Michaels can't criticize his Liberal pals ! They'll stop inviting him to their clambakes etc. You know, among the Libs, it not just politics and a job — it's PERSONAL all the way…
Besides, SNL is the only shtick Michaels has ever had — he's doesn't know how to grub a buck elsewhere…
For the record: I have always thought that even from the '70's SNL is moronic and base LCD "humor" that would be pitiful if it weren't so stupid. I don't consider any of the luminaries of the show (Akroyd, Belushi et al) to be even second-rate acting material. Have never seen one iota of proof or shred of evidence that Chevy Chase can do anything but mug for the camera, much less act.
Great idea but SNL is incapable of jabbing at BO in any way, on any level. I think all their liberal heads would explode if they heard but a syllable in jest of the Mighty O. They dish it out but they certainly can't take it.
I have to believe that SNL and NBC will never tell the emperor he has no clothes. They will swallow the poison pill the liberal newspapers across the country are taking. Better to go belly up than put anything liberal in a dim light. Better to pass up a large group of viewers than dis the 'Bamster. They will follow the emporer around buck naked reprising the old Bush the buffoon schtick. Even the ardent liberal viewers will grow bored with the next 4 years.
It aint Pillows.
It's not really within the scope of Lorne Michael's direct control, but I found Janeane Garofolo's recent comments on Keith Olbermann's show about Michael Steele to be deeply offensive.
In fact, if I were a liberal, I would be shouting "hate speech" at this point.
But although Lorne Michael's is not directly responsible for comments of former cast members, an entire season (Fall 2008) of SNL when the viewing audience is served up nothing but week after week of Palin-bashing can only serve to embolden the has-been SNL alumni to attempt to garner publicity and popularity for themselves by joining in the chorus.
And so, in this regard I do hold Lorne Michaels partially responsible. If he were to even slightly rein in the [insert conservative public figure here]-bashing, I believe it would go a long way towards delegitimizing or at least toning down the sort of feeding frenzy behavior that we have seen and continue to see, both from those on air and those at home who ape them.
Steven, just saw this on CNN:
"Lorne Michaels is in shock tonight after being accosted, by letter, by an ultra right wing crank. Said Mr. Micheals, 'I could understand the words, but the letter had no meaning to me. All I know for sure is that he asked his diety to strike me down before he signed the letter.'
Mr. Michaels is resting comfortably tonight within the heart of the collective, the SNL Writer's Borg, where they are busy scouring the papers looking for political skits for next week. Said the Writer's Borg, 'We do not understand why the 3% of the American public that voted for the Republican nominee, the evil Sarah Palin, continues to resist. But as long as they do, we will continue to point out the futility of their actions. This week we intend to ridicule their connection to rich, white people.'"
I think they got your letter man!!
Honestly it has been years since I have watched Network television. I saw the Juanita Broderick interview and when I found out that they bought the exclusive rights to the interview and then purposely waited until after the impeachment hearings were over I had had it. It was beyond partisonship and was actually fascist. Especially considering the flagrant unfair attacks they place on any conservative in power.
There are so many good shows on cable channels that are not political and from what I gather the networks are all reality shows and terrible politically laden tripe anyways. Why do we still think we need to worry about the big three mainstream channels.
We give these people more power than they deserve . I could care less if anyone watches SNL. Why should I help them by paying attention to them.
Back in the 1970s, there was some creativity and the humor was not always political—-and the show spawned the Blue Brothers—classic cinema. The only redeeming element of the 80s was Murphy, the 90s Adam Sandler—-21st century SNL gave us Will Ferrell—and they can have him back. Chevy Chase redux…not surprising from a show without a new idea since 1984.
Astute observation — the Liberal MSM print organs such as the SF Chronicle, Rocky Mountain News etc. would rather die than admit their brand of Liberalism has been supplanted by a medium which they only acknowledge in disparaging terms ( the 'net) and brand us amateurs and incompetent to hold forth on the topics that MSM 'reporters' do.
To their detriment, the MSM organs have belatedly discovered there are millions out there who are just as good of writers as they are and many are genuine experts on topics the MSM still applies the 'one size fits all' strategy too. It's easy to see how lacking the average one-size-fits-all MSM 'journalist is — they cobble together their required 300-500 words required to still collect their pay on topics of which they know little. The sure giveaway is the 'reports' laking in context or background because the 'journalist lacks both contextual knowledge and background.
Funny, to the MSM, the most important thing our world is NOT human events, natural events or even the news of the day; the most important thing tin the world to the MSM is…themselves.
But you know that if SNL or anybody else were to dare anything more than the gentlest mocking of Bambi, Al Sharpton and his merry band would be screaming you-know-what.
Heck, if I'm racist by virtue of the simple fact of failing to vote for the guy, how much more so would I or anybody else be for actually poking fun at him? You know, on top of being a coward and all.
Rampant sexism and racism (on the part of SNL and SNL alums) are all fair play though, so long as the target is on the 'other side'. You know, it's the primary liberal rule of, the rules don't apply to us, only to you.
oh, and BTW, Dennis Miller rocks!
Even the show about SNL failed because all they did was kick around Christians and conservatives. They weren't interested in being funny only in bashing the Right.
Who remember Studio 60?
So who were the other names on the attached list? Of course you'd be my first choice. I'd also like to see Brad Stine. And I bet the similarly named Ben Stein could come up with some great stuff too. Maybe you guys could get together and start your own show.
Steven, everyone before me has already said it. I just wanted to say I loved the the Ferris Bueller-Cameron "Squash my nuts into oblivion" reference. Thanks for the funny videos and smart commentary.
The Rocky didn't die because of "liberalism". It died because Denver wasn't big enough to support two papers and the eBay/Craigslist effect on classified advertising revenues (subscriptions only make up a fraction of a paper's overall take)
They would have to start out with something lightweight like – Michelle (Hulk Arms) O's sleeveless White House Workout – and ease into the subject.
Isn't that the truth. If a Republican had said half the thing Biden's said, he would be the new star of SNL!
Steven, dont quit, keep on hammering way. It may not be on SNL, but your day will come. You have a bright future!
I think if Palin hadn't whined so much about Tina Fey, it would have helped her image with undecided voters. Seriously, can Palin NOT whine or complain or feel slighted in every public statement she makes? The chip on her shoulder makes Nixon look like Sammy Hagaar pouring tequila shots in Cabo in comparison.
Location:
The interior of an elegantly decorated New York City penthouse.
Our hero is first seen walking through his front door.
He carefully places his keys atop the custom made antique, 17th century French writing desk in the foyer, and calls out cheerily to his devoted wife, who is contently lounging on the love seat in the next room reading the latest “Ladies Home Journal” with the wonderful cover story, “President’s First Lady, has the Arms of Venus”.
Lorne Michaels: "Honey…I'm home, any mail today?"
Mrs. Lorne Michaels: "Oh hello darling, well I thumbed through it a little while ago dear, nothing important…oh wait, there is this one from that nice young man Steven Crowder, that you might want to take a look at. Do you know he's really a Canadian?” She whispers.
Lorne Michaels: “Crowder?…Steven Crowder?…sorry, neeevvveeerrr heard of him”
Lorne quickly fixes himself a martini, (shaken, not stirred), and with drink in hand, picks up the large stack of mail from the exquisite Italian marble counter top from the bar, and walks out to the lavish balcony overlooking the incredible panorama of the “city that never sleeps” spread out below him.
After gazing out on this twinkling wonderland that is his, for a few moments, he suddenly turns to his bride and excitedly tells her:
Lorne Michaels: “Honey…honey…look, I can see Canada from our house!”
He then turns to the camera, points directly at it and loudly says:
“Ladies and Gentlemen…It’s, Saturday, Night, LIVE!”
Music up.
Cut to commercial.
Good luck with that Steven.
Not Over.
I think I'm the only one that has noticed the real reason why Geithner absolutely HAD to be the Treasury Secretary. Obama needed someone in his cabinet that had bigger ears than he does! Did no one else notice that?
When we were much younger, my wife-to-be and I used to rush home on Saturday nights to watch SNL. Now we don't watch it at all. The show lost it's way in the 90's and it never really recovered. I don't know what happened. Weekend update was pretty well written even when the rest wasn't, but that too lost it's charm. Tina Fey did a pretty good job with it, but still, too little. Can't say that even Steven could save it now.
Dear Lorne,
I'm a rock-ribbed diehard conservative. But I promise to vote for every Democrat on my ballot until the end of time if you set Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey on fire.
Yours truly,
JohnFn
P.S. Is it true Chevy Chase is dead?
Alright, let me give this a shot …
Dear Lorne,

Steven, your posts never cease to entertain. Couldn't have said it better! Jason Sudekis does a pretty funny Joe Biden though! I would love to see some good-natured jabs taken at the President.
@Pete:
The RMN died because of the flight from traditional, Liberal MSM organs to other modalities; i.e. Fox news and web-based non-Liberal news organs.
In a sense, the diminished Denver audience for traditional Liberal MSM print organs was insufficient to support two daily papers — too many people have voted with their mouse clicks…
So, in a narrow sense, you are correct, but not in the manner you hoped and asserted.
The sooner SNL is buried the sooner I get to urinate on the grave site.
That's funny Vaughn. And you are probably right about it happening when H*ll suffers from climate change.
Why not do it ourselves? Forget SNL. There is enough talent in this chat room to overthrow the Kool-aid mustache wearers at SNL.
Just a thought. But I'm guessing conservative entertainers/writers/producers/actors/graphic designers/etc. would be willing to donate time, open a YouTube channel, create the skits, and give SNL some competition. I'm one of them.
It's comforting to hear that there's someone else out there who thinks that both Will Ferrell and Chevy Chase are totally UNfunny. Just for the record- I never thought Dan Ackroyd was particularly amusing either, and the whole "coneheads" shtick was absolutely idiotic (and I don't mean "funny" idiotic- just plain stupid).
The success of that show, IMHO, was entirely due to the considerable suggestive power of HYPE.
http://www.historyofhypnotism.com
The advertisers fled the RMN because the audience and subscribers to view/respond to the ads fled…it's a synergy you fail to acknowledge !
The advertisers took their trade to the web because that's where the former RMN readers went. The readers fled the RMN because of the numerous alternatives to the predictable, droll Liberal slant and jaundiced world-view.
[...] love the humor of Steven Crowder. I love his take on Saturday Night Live.…. will they ever get funny [...]
First off, SNL has NOT had a great cast since the mid to late 90's and that's just the honest truth. I grew up with SNL and it was my favorite show because they WERE equal opportunity offenders. After 9/11 something terrible happened. They all became left-wing lunatics that based 95% of the comedy on anti-Bush rehetoric. Once again, if you're an equal opportunity offender, then it's okay but Tina Fey and her goons were not capable of doing that. During this past election, they went after EVERYONE that was Obama's opposition, including Hilary Clinton. I won't get into Palin because it's like stating the obvious. They trashed her and since then Tina Fey is the comedy queen, as if she hasn't been around for over the past decade! Once the election was over, they no longer knew how to make political jokes, with the exception of Gov. Patterson! Caroline Kennedy made a fool of herself and SNL saw nothing funny about it. She even had an affair scandal brewing and SNL missed the humor in it. Could it be because Sweet Caroline is a memeber of the liberal family royalty? SNL claims to be the voice of the American people but they ignore the anger we all have over this administration by refusing to even poke a laugh out of it. They have proved to me and many that they are a part of the liberal media machine that just may have played a part in Obama's election win and the economic turmoil we are currently in. I think you are being too kind to Loren. He's the boss and he knows what his writers are doing.
P.S. Late night television has yet to make fun of Obama's tax-evading administration and that ridiculous bill. I guess it's not funny unless it's Bush. Aren't they supposed to "entertaining" us?
Obviously we disagree about what is funny. I think SNL has been horribly dull and unfunny for the past five years or so and I stopped watching it on a regular basis two years ago. Each time I've tuned in since then, my decision to stop watching has been confirmed, even when Steve Martin was hosting.
NBC couldn't care less what we, the viewers, think of the show. I know this for a fact because I sent a much more scathing and direct letter to some V.P. tool in charge of late night programming and his charming response summarized the glory days of SNL (you know, when it was funny?) and signed off with "sorry you won't be along for the ride next season." Code for "…and the horse you rode in on."
NBC/SNL made fun of Bush and Palin, but apparently The Messiah is off-limits. Good for them. I'm not watching and apparently neither is much of America.
Steven, Your hired. Report for duty tomorrow.
Lorne
Just kidding. Great letter tho…:)
Steve, the time is now to make your own version of SNL online. Fageddabout, Lorne Michaels et al and get together with the other conservative comedians and make your own show. Perhaps, pjtv could carry it on Saturday nights. Let the old media dinosaur go extinct. You are a funny and courageous guy. Good luck, man.
You'd think Lorne would learn his lesson from that magical night back in September when SNL had its highest ratings in 14 years. Who was the guest that week? Ooooooooooh, Barracuda!
You know, Mr. Crowder, I've watched a few of your videos, and they're very well put-together, and you have good delivery and excellent timing. A lot of your jokes are pretty funny, too. In short, while I'm not particularly in accord with politics, I think you've got talent. Which is why it's kind of a shame that you're pulling a Rupert-Pupkin-like stunt such as this. It's not gonna work. And I'm not sure you, or your audience here, wants it to work. More like you just want to stoke more resentment at those liberal big media scum, etc., etc. A shame, really.
I guess I'm the oddball. Though I watched SNL I was more of a Second City TV guy.
SNL was never funnier than SCTV.
Steve, I don't think you'll get a response . Great letter though.
That was the point I was going to make. Dennis Miller is always complimenting Lorne about being a smart businessman and all, but it should be obvious to anyone with a better than room temperature IQ that alienating 1/2 your potential audience is a bad move. They finally get great ratings for Palin, then write mediocre skits for her (although the Todd dance made me laugh), then go right back to their full-time job (carrying water for the Dems). They loved to go after Clinton (both of them), but wet their pants at the suggestion of calling Obama on the carpet. You can't be funny if you're afraid to upset your hero.
They wouldn't even have to attack Obama directly (although it would be easy for anyone with comedy writing chops). Dennis had a great suggestion for a skit with the loser from the town hall (the one who couldn't find a better job than McDonalds after 4 years). He thought they could do An Officer And A Gentlemen knock-off, with Barack picking up the stoner and carrying him from the town hall (to the strains of the band and cheering onlookers). Even if you're pathetic enough to not be able to find humor in Barack's behavior, how can you not find it in the goofs around him (especially the press corp)?
Lorne, if you're reading this…..fire all your writers and start over. The cast is talented, but the writing is as bad as I've ever seen it.
SNL became another tiny cog in the big liberal media machine a long time ago. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they were subsidized by the Democratic party.
The line was "Those aren't pillows!"
What about having Gov. Paterson come out and help him when the prompter goes out? Wait that won't work; they have only one white guy that they use to portray the two most prominent black politicians in the news.
I don't watch SNL for one reason; it's boring. If there's any reason to watch (certainly not for comedic value), it would be as an observer of liberals in a controlled habitat, kind of like going to the zoo. Now, the real funny part is seeing how deluded they are. These people think they are entertainers when, in fact, they are propagandists masquerading as entertainers. They've sold their souls for politics, hence, the propaganda is the 'art' and THAT is what drives them, not comedy. The agenda is oh so obvious and that is tedious and boring.
And it's true that they can't change because they will absolutely lose their monolithic audience. Their audience is there for the exact same reason and it isn't comedy; it's for reinforcement.
Hey… Norm McDonald was the funniest guy SNL ever had.
Man, people just don't appreciate dry humor anymore.
It's salvageable, they just need a lot of fresh blood. I'd also suggest:
1. Cut the length of the segments dramatically.
2. Drop the recurring characters, that's just a crutch and they're not funny.
3. Get a diversity of political views, religious views, geographic views, and INTERESTS — it feels like the show won't do anything they don't read about in the NY Times.
4. Stop being worried about offending people and take risks again.
Crowder if you get the job I just might start watching SNL again! Haven't tuned in for years.
My favorite late night show is Red Eye! "If comedy were tai chi, Asian women would line up and do HIM in the park!" And they don't even have writers.
LOL!! I'll second that!
This is bull…..What about all the Clinton gags when he was in office? They can't all have come from the conservative camp.
Please put to rest the idea that Liberals cannot laugh at their 'leaders'. Give it time. They'll have to lampoon Obama and Biden eventually.
I'm not sure what night it's on, but you could probably ask 411. Sorry, I don't have the number for them.
And if they do lampoon Obama or Biden there will be a post on here saying that SNL went 'soft' on them and that it 'wasn't funny enough'
i'll bet good money on it.
Have SNL ever claimed to be 'fair and balanced'? Do they claim to be equal? Not really. Then there is no reason for them to bow to ANY pressure to equally attack Obama as they did Bush. From the sounds of it noone here watches it anyway so it's not like they're going to lose any viewers.
They have no obligation to lampoon Obama. The only obligation they have it to write good comedy…which they seem to be failing at.
The Clinton gags were all superficial. The libs tread very carefully with him. The only time they truly unleash on a liberals is when the liberal is completely disgraced and becomes an unperson — and those attacks are viciously personal.
Saturday Night live has been awful for years. All the canned laughter in the world can't make the lame jokes and banal mockeries work.
He doesn't need to stoke anything. Or haven't you been paying attention?
No, he's not dead. But it is a little hard to tell.
Actually, if you want to be technical about it, they don't have any obligation to write good comedy either.
It would also help if, you know, they actually had funny people on the show.
I'm a Bobby Jindal partisan (at least for now). But I could come up with a very funny skit based on his performance responding to the non-State of the Union address. I think it's because we conservatives are capable of doing what the liberals can't do. That is to see the humor in almost anything. Even other conservatives. In fact, I think I'll write a skit right now about Michael Steele, complete with hip-hop music. Of course I could also write a pretty funny skit about Snoop Dog becoming a Muslim. So much material. So little time.
I'm with you!
Let's make a rule. We can NEVER criticize another private comedy source for not doing enough jokes about liberals. ENOUGH. We're conservatives. They have a right to do whatever they want. And worst of all, the couple of articles have been patently wrong. Both SNL and the Onion DESTROY liberals some times. And SNL DOES have a conservative writer (Jim Downey) Also, one of the McCain girls interned there. It's clear they have a bias but it's like 60/40 or 70/30. It's okay to point this bias out some times but we have only course of action as conservatives DO IT OURSELVES. We believe in the right of anyone who pays their own money and runs their own business to do what they damned well please.
They did have one good Clinton gag right after the impeachment– when Clinton got off. I think it was Darryl Hammond that was doing Clinton at the time. Anyway, they showed a press conference and Clinton(Hammond) walked up, used the thumb-up hand gesture that Clinton was known for and simply said "I. Am. Bulletproof." That cracked me up.
Here's the real answer.
Red Eye
South Park
1/2 Hour News Hour
Mind of Mencia
King of the Hill (Ever seen their carbon credits episode?)
The Goode Family (New Mike Judge show – Google it)
Penn & Teller BS
Scrapple Face
The Peoples Cube
Newsbusted
Evan Sayet
Stephen Crowder
Jack Simmons
Move On Already.org
Cheryl Underwood
Yet somehow the Clinton years had some of the best material the show'd had since the early (and mid, Eddie Murphy, Crystal, Short, Guest) years. Of course, having comic genius Phil Hartman (RIP) in the cast helped tremendously.
Also funny, me misspelling Steven Crowder and Sheryl Underwood.
