Before 1982 the upper marginal tax rate was 70% yet the wealthiest 1% paid maybe a tenth to a third in taxes, legally. How did they do it - Loopholes, Foreign Investments, delaying income.

In 1986 Reagan cut the tax rate to 28% and the wealthiest paid roughly 28%. Why!! Because Reagan aso eliminated tax loopholes. Reagan got rid of the at risk exclusion to real estate, he got rid of the passive losses, h even got rid of the capital gains tax cut. Why because if the government was going to charge 28% they needed to collect it.

In the debate Obama stated Warren Buffet complained its not fair that his Secretary paid a higher percentage in tax that he did so he supported raising the upper marginal rate. HMMM.....

The tax rate for the wealthy under Bush is 36% of all income - the deductions and exemptions taken away.

What does it matter to the top 1% if Obama raises their tax rates if they go offshore to Bahamian Foreign Service corporations or if the rich start investing in losers that make no money.

Trust me on this if you make more than 1,000,000 a year in investment income you do not need to pay taxes to the American government unless you want to. Obama is powerless as long as the money does not hit American Soil.

Given the state of our ecomony with manufacturing leaving our shore this could only get worse. I believe there is a limit to how much you can actually tax the wealthy. The truly wealthy will always have options to opt out, someone somewhere in the world will want their money.

So when the bill for the trillion dollar bailouts come through who do you think is going to pay it. That's right Joe Six Pack Middle Class only he may no longer have a job.

Since you owe everything to the state, everything the state gives to you is a tax cut. And so is everything you get to keep. Your paycheck? That´s called a tax cut now. Next time you tip someone, don´t forget to say "Here´s a little tax cut for you!".

Moral Hazard - My apologies. For the last 30 years, I have dedicated my life to help serve the public, and have helped saved many lies. I have seen poverty that is real, in our own communities, plus for years I have donated my time to helping at an Alzheimer's patient center, and various other non-profit organizations. I feel passionately for these groups and people.

On the other side of that equation, I have seen people who make some of our politicians seem honest, through their manipulation of the system. These were the people to which I was referring. The ones who wouldn't help another person unless the pay off was really big and they didn't have to do anything. I have seen it. It still amazes me, and able-bodied they just sit back and wait for their next hand out, taking it away from someone who really needs it.

Thank You for allowing me my opinion and for bringing another side to it without condemning me or personally attacking. That seems to be the unique beauty of this forum. Hearing/discussing different ideas or views on the same subject makes us all better people.

"My grandmother always used to say, “No one on welfare ever gave someone else a job”!"

Christopher, unfortunately that is simply not true. The majority of the non-profit sector essentially "live of the poor" as do the multitudes of federal, state, and local employees who earn decent pay and great benefits.

I work for a large non-profit organization in a large metropolitan area and recently stated to my boss: Do you think that we have a conflict of interest in our fight against poverty? How many people will lose their jobs if we eliminate poverty tomorrow?

My brilliant comment was lost on my supervisor and I am currently looking for a job in the for-profit sector.

Oh my lord, it's purely semantics! I feel like I'm in a bad twilight zone episode. Indeed a lot of people are just that stupid. And to quote of my favorite producers of fine truth filled documentaries, Michael Moore. "They are possibly the dumbest people on the planet"!

Great post Rodney.

If you are working, keep working.
Millions of Obamabots are counting on you.

As my father used to say all the time,

The fastest way to get back on your feet is to get up off your A$$.

I love it! (NOT) Taxing the rich. Aren't those the people who are creating the jobs? (Branjoliina not included)

The new doctor will work in his practice, or a hospital, and he will need nurses, attendants, clerks, that will all get paid because he made some money. Isn't that sharing the wealth? When business is down, he has to worry about making enough for payroll. The others still get their same paycheck. He worries about making enough to pay all his bills. HE WORKED HIS A#$ OFF AND DESERVES TO REAP THE REWARDS!
