Obama Tax Cut Plan Is Genius
by Rodney Lee ConoverRemember the first time Barack Obama went on TV and said he was going to cut taxes for 95% of all Americans and we all kind of snickered – even Democrats? I thought to myself, ‘boy, he’s done now — nobody’s that stupid.’ Then 52% Americans went out and proved how much I know, right?
Stay with me on this: On one of the TV shows the other night, the guy on the left repeats the claim that Obama is going to cut taxes for 95% of all Americans, and the conservative guest says, (the obvious); “That’s ridiculous – 40% of Americans don’t even pay taxes, so if Obama sends them a check, that’s not a tax cut – that’s welfare!”
The guy on the left says; “It’s not welfare. They may not pay federal income tax, but they pay sales tax, local taxes, gas tax, and property taxes. You didn’t complain when George W. Bush cut taxes for the rich, but now you don’t want Obama to cut taxes for everyone else?” Silence. Everybody on the show stammered and rolled their eyes; but for a minute there, they were kind of stifled by that one. They were staring like they had seen an alien. And it wasn’t just Colmes’ hair this time.
So this morning, I’m watching another TV show and a different guy repeats it: “Just because poor people don’t pay taxes to the IRS, doesn’t mean they don’t pay taxes, and they deserve a tax cut too. It’s not welfare. It’s a tax cut.”
Wait a minute… So Obama sends you a check and as long as you buy a pack of smokes, (which is taxed), it’s not welfare, it’s a tax cut?” And when you think about it, all welfare or any free money you get from the government, as long as you’re paying sales tax on a 40-ounce, putting five bucks of gas in your Olds, or even a two-dollar fee to get into any one of our beautiful National Parks, you’re not getting welfare, you’re getting a tax cut, baby!
Wow – Food Stamps, disability, college loans, heating oil from Venezuela, farm subsidies – they aren’t government assistance or types of welfare – they’re tax cuts. Barack Obama is not even in office yet and he’s already eliminated all welfare!
And you all thought Obama was going to govern from the left…

Instead of cutting taxes, why don't we just get rid of the IRS and the FED , then lets cut every democrat out of power forever so we don't have to listen to their illogical ramblings. These people are insane. Alll Obama is doing is spreading the wealth as he said he was going to do. He has to pay off all the people that voted for him and the democrats. He has to pay the moochers and tax the achievers. As soon as 2010 comes around all the Bush tax cuts end and all go back to the Clinton era tax level before W cut them. We need to end this extortion racket the Democrats have perfected in separating us from our money.
If Obama is so generous with our income, why doesn't he and the rest of the elected bums that control our lives give themselves an 70% pay cut. After all isn't that the range we are paying in taxes if you add them all up? We are in this so called recession, brought on by the Democratic congress and these bums sneaked in a pay raise.
The best part of all this, we are paying these people and all their perks, kickbacks back room deals isn't it nice to know we are getting so much for the money we pay these legalized extortion racket. I wonder if the Founding Fathers would put up with these crooks in congress?
Folks should just accept it. Come Wed January 21st – all of our problems will vanish!
Instead of sending the checks, which costs more money, why not actually cut the tax itself? The federal govt does not collect sales tax, property tax, etc. so it is not a federal tax cut. It is a handout. Start by lowering the gas tax if you really want to help. What are they discussing now? They want to raise the the gas tax by 10 cents because the cost of gas went down. That is a tax cut.
It’s all sleight of hand, anyway. He’ll cut taxes, then raise the gas tax as he’s suggested. There’s not a more regressive tax. Poor folks use just as much gas as rich folks, so they’ll bear the burden of the tax with fewer resources to use to pay it. Sadly, they’ll probably be convinced that Obama is helping them by taking their money.
I always liked Mark Steyn’s description of the first draft of Obama’s tax cut: “Supposedly, under the Obama tax plan, 95 per cent of the American people will get a tax cut. You’d think that at this point the natural skepticism of any sentient being other than six-week-old puppies might kick in, but apparently not. If you’re wondering why Obama didn’t simply announce that under his plan 112 per cent of the American people will get a tax cut, well, they ran it past the focus groups who said that that was all very generous but they’d really like it if he could find a way to stick it to Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove and whatnot. So 95 per cent it is.”
OK just when I thought I had put this idiocy behind me, the fools repeat it. Its so obviously a lie and a fraud perpetuated to make people think one thing and when people stand back and think about it, they know it is total unadulterated BS however these leftists who repeat it over and over again like human tape loops, believe it? Come on. No one is that stupid, are they? I mean…..
Oh and watch what happens to the other half of the “Bailout” money. I mean since the idiots don’t know what happened to the first part.
If the government really wanted to give us tax cuts, they would simply just lower the percentages of the taxes that we pay. Everyone is going to have to pay more taxes. Take for instance these checks they are going to send everyone-the government will find a way to get that back from us through taxes. To anyone that believes they will not pay more taxes in one way or the other, I have some desert in Nevada and swamp land in Florida I’d like to sell you.
A little of topic: I’m watching the pre-show of what will be the cake walk confirmation hearing for (Sir Edmund)Hillary Clinton, and call me weird, but I think Chelsea is pretty hot. Maybe I just have a think for redheads.
“So Obama sends you a check and as long as you buy a pack of smokes, (which is taxed), it’s not welfare, it’s a tax cut?”
So a rising tide of BS is supposed to lift all boats too?
This might be something we can flip in the future. One proposal for the flat tax or national sales tax had a one-size-fits-all check going out to every American and then flat rate taxation. The poor do not get driven under that way. Obama’s successor (and a reform minded Congress) could add the missing 5% (billed as “universal income insurance?”) and then flatten and possibly even enlarge the checks as the sweetener for flattening taxes – voila! We go from a majority on the federal dole to a shared burden that gives everyone a stake in keeping taxes down.
What an effin’ joke. But what do you expect? These are the same dishonest creeps who endlessly employ the rhetoric and imagery of CEOs, the idle rich and the like when discussing tax increases when anyone with an infant’s grasp of economics knows full well that it amounts to a meaningless revenue source and the sweet spot in the income curve is hardly rich by comparison. The clearest sign that they are a bunch of craven liars is the fact that they never push tax increases which match their rhetoric. You want to raise the rate 5% or so on people who earn a million or even half a million you’ll meet far less resistance, but when these jerks tell me I’m rich making 200K in Manhattan they can blow me.
You may call me a dreamer
But I’m not the only one …
He will do what Bill Clinton did with taxes which is raise them after saying that he would cut them. It’s the whole Clinton cabinet so why would they do anything else?
I always thought Chelsea was hot but her mother shrivels my pod.
This is amazing! I guess if you repeat a Ponzi Scheme long enough, it not only becomes truth, it becomes policy.
This isn’t ruling from the left … it’s ruling from Never Never Land.
This is getting pretty interesting. Obama wants nothing more but to be a popular President. To be honest, who can blame him. However, to be a good President means making tough, sometimes unpopular decisions. “W” was all about tough unpopular decisions, although I’m not saying he was a good President. As Americans, we have only two choices when it comes to electing politicians. We can pick idiots on the left, or morons on the right. As a country, we should start pushing and voting for third party candidates. Of course the MSM would never give them any air time what so ever.
OMG you are so right: IT IS A PONZI SCHEME! Dang!
The tax “system” is designed to confuse and hide.
This allows politicians to say all sorts of innane things and it is very hard to “prove” them wrong.
Musical chairs and the number of chairs keeps dwindling.
We are now in an insipid parallel universe where up is down, and 95% of people will get a tax cut. Dare not question the Bamster for his motives are pure, and through the power of his words, a certain enlightenment will now consume us all. “Boulder dash, these roving bands of liberal malcontents will turn on their, “vacuous horde master, the minute they don’t get their way. We are talking about people with the attention span of a petulant 3year old who’s being forced to stop sucking it’s thumb. One thing is certain, gravity, and um… um… Barry Obama will fall faster than Jimmy Carter publicly servicing the most recent third world, America hating, douche bag dictator.
You know, this reminds me of that create xx number of jobs on one day, then save xx number of jobs on another, then the combo of saving AND creating xx number of jobs. You are never quite sure exactly what the story is on any given day. It’s almost like a trial balloon. Which ever one seems to get the most positive response, is the one to go with. I personally will take the last President, myself. I always knew he was going to say exactly what he was thinking, he came in a compassionate conservative, saying he was going to do things the way he felt best, and he leaves exactly the same. I agree with him, this isn’t American Idol, who gives a rip what a bunch of polls say? He wasn’t trying for sweetest pres., or cutest, or some other silly sort.
Obama has NO CONTROl over local taxes, sales tax and property tax…. they are all contolled at the local level….
It’s nothing but a shell game. They raise taxes on everything (Democrat’s raised the sales tax in Cook County to the highest in the country last summer) and then give you a ‘tax cut’ somewhere else.
In actuality, you’ll only be getting a tax cut if you never use any form of transportation other than your feet, live in a cardboard box, and don’t buy food or ANYTHING else. Make sure you use the woods to do your thing too because they tax the water going into the toilet and again going out.
Only a dupe believes their taxes have been cut.
As a conservative I’m all for tax cuts even if those tax cuts are in a roundabout way as Obama is doing. I pay many hidden taxes such as the phone tax, milk tax, and the gasoline tax. All these funds go to the federal government, so why can’t I get a refund on these taxes?
I have another great suggestion for Obama…why don’t we just print more money? He can just throw it out into the crowds like candy at his inauguration, and everyone will be in awe of his messiah-like powers!
All snarkiness aside,
The one aspect of Obama/Biden progressive tax scheme which has been revealed (taxing individuals making more than $200k at a higher RATE) actually converted my best buddy from center-left to full on conservative.
You see, he just finished his final medical rotations in the fall of 2008, and got a job making a little more than 200k — for the first time in his life. But, he also has over HALF A MILLION dollars in student loans from med school.
When he did the math on Obama’s plan (to impose a different income tax % on people making $199k vs. those making $200k), he figured out that, even by maintaining a thrifty lifestyle (compared with his colleagues), it will take him 3-4 years longer to fully pay off his debts — and the interest is now turned “on” for those student loans.
Your reasoning makes no sense. Obama’s “tax cut” basically takes money from the achievers (or the rich as you like to call them) and give it to the lazy whiners. And you call that tax cut? My oh my! What planet are you from?
Granted, everyone pays local sales tax and payroll tax. But Obama has no control over those local sales tax and payroll tax. If he can, he should cut sales tax and payroll tax for the low income folks.
Liberals like you can’t reason logically.
Neither Bush nor Bush Lite have a clue, if you want to get the economy rolling again you have to get the people going again. Spending money to make more government or sending it to Wall Street won’t cut it. If they are dead set on spending 1.5 trillion, then send a check to each of the 138,314,700 people who are listed as taxpayers in 2008. That’s approx $11,000 each, it should be sent as taxable income and the tax with held before it is sent, leaving a net cost of less than the 1.5T, and giving people money to pay bills, spend (wisely), invest in their future, and yes, some will blow it. In any case, that’s what will get things going.
Dr. Kent Knogh – your highbrow attempt at a joke is not for this forum. This is a discussion of the utmost. The Office Of The President-Elect has been in full gear ever since the historic election.
Hey Alexander – you owe me $12 and your soul.
The dossier.
Say nothing. Stop it at once.
Enough you two or I will ban you from the internet forever. (File case: 1Z258.001)
Now see what you have done Alexander? They’re watching.
But who is watching them??
A person making over $200K/yr. pays the same income tax rate as those who don’t up to that amount. The higher rate is charged only to income above $200K/yr. Taxpayers typically say, for example, “I’m in the 28% bracket” even if only the last few dollars they made that year were taxed at that rate, and most of their income was only taxed at 10%. Therefore, SPIRO, your friend will not take longer to pay off his debts, but a slightly less amount of time than someone with identical debts/payment plan making $199K/yr.
By the way, everyone, I voted for Bob Barr, the Libertarian Candidate and obvious best choice. None of these bailouts would be occurring (after inauguration). It’s likely his agenda would have been to eliminate the income tax and the Federal Reserve Bank’s control of our money supply, returning this once great nation to the gold standard, allowing Americans a solid store of value for their savings instead of the fiat currency we can soon use as confetti. Good luck to all Americans..
Remember what got us here. It was not money. It was not government. It was not safety. It was not a surveillance society. What got us here were a few rebels who said enough. They declared their independence. And brought forth the largest bastion of freedom, both personal and economic, than has ever existed on Earth. Now all of you want to throw it away for a pittance? Not me, not now, not ever. . . anyone who thinks otherwise can hang.
Brilliant. Ah (I stole this) it’s like filling a bucket full of water from a large lake, then walking around to the other side of the lake – in an effort to raise the level of the lake. Just like the dot.com bubble of the late 90’s, the dollar bubble, this low interest rate and HUD fed real estate bubble which crashed and left the mortgage/credit crisis behind, the tax cut fed bubble – they are all temporary – and operate on borrowed money. ya go to pay the piper back. All this stimulus will do, will be to give folks a bit (jobs, cash, whatever) during the time when it is being paid for by the money from the other side of the lake. When it stops, it stops – and more money will be owed.
People please, you must WAKE UP! There is no “Bush” this, or “Obama” that. There is a ruling elite BEHIND the president who make the decisions. Obama is their puppet, just as Bush was before him.
This tactic is used to get you to love or hate one man, so you will not look behind the curtain at the real power!
WAKE UP now by going to infowars.com where you will get real news and information, unfiltered by the ruling elite of America.
I am the ruling elite, Bob. I have infinite power right now. I have so much power I have to hide how much power I have or else you’d find out how much power I have and try to take it from me and then I’d have to use my power which would mean I’d have less than infinite power. That is true power.
Since I assume there will be multiple rounds of stimulus payments/refunds, and there were complaints that people saved or paid down debt with the last round instead of spending it. I suspect there will soon be a proposal to send out reloadable debit cards. Then when they want a stimulus shot, just load up the cards.
I love it! (NOT) Taxing the rich. Aren’t those the people who are creating the jobs? (Branjoliina not included)
The new doctor will work in his practice, or a hospital, and he will need nurses, attendants, clerks, that will all get paid because he made some money. Isn’t that sharing the wealth? When business is down, he has to worry about making enough for payroll. The others still get their same paycheck. He worries about making enough to pay all his bills. HE WORKED HIS A#$ OFF AND DESERVES TO REAP THE REWARDS!
My grandmother always used to say, “No one on welfare ever gave someone else a job”!
Great post Rodney.
If you are working, keep working.
Millions of Obamabots are counting on you.
As my father used to say all the time,
The fastest way to get back on your feet is to get up off your A$$.
Oh my lord, it’s purely semantics! I feel like I’m in a bad twilight zone episode. Indeed a lot of people are just that stupid. And to quote of my favorite producers of fine truth filled documentaries, Michael Moore. “They are possibly the dumbest people on the planet”!
“My grandmother always used to say, “No one on welfare ever gave someone else a job”!”
Christopher, unfortunately that is simply not true. The majority of the non-profit sector essentially “live of the poor” as do the multitudes of federal, state, and local employees who earn decent pay and great benefits.
I work for a large non-profit organization in a large metropolitan area and recently stated to my boss: Do you think that we have a conflict of interest in our fight against poverty? How many people will lose their jobs if we eliminate poverty tomorrow?
My brilliant comment was lost on my supervisor and I am currently looking for a job in the for-profit sector.
Moral Hazard – My apologies. For the last 30 years, I have dedicated my life to help serve the public, and have helped saved many lies. I have seen poverty that is real, in our own communities, plus for years I have donated my time to helping at an Alzheimer’s patient center, and various other non-profit organizations. I feel passionately for these groups and people.
On the other side of that equation, I have seen people who make some of our politicians seem honest, through their manipulation of the system. These were the people to which I was referring. The ones who wouldn’t help another person unless the pay off was really big and they didn’t have to do anything. I have seen it. It still amazes me, and able-bodied they just sit back and wait for their next hand out, taking it away from someone who really needs it.
Thank You for allowing me my opinion and for bringing another side to it without condemning me or personally attacking. That seems to be the unique beauty of this forum. Hearing/discussing different ideas or views on the same subject makes us all better people.
The gravity of the situation. The aura of spectre.
Alexander – enough!! They are everywhere!!
Since you owe everything to the state, everything the state gives to you is a tax cut. And so is everything you get to keep. Your paycheck? That´s called a tax cut now. Next time you tip someone, don´t forget to say “Here´s a little tax cut for you!”.
Before 1982 the upper marginal tax rate was 70% yet the wealthiest 1% paid maybe a tenth to a third in taxes, legally. How did they do it – Loopholes, Foreign Investments, delaying income.
In 1986 Reagan cut the tax rate to 28% and the wealthiest paid roughly 28%. Why!! Because Reagan aso eliminated tax loopholes. Reagan got rid of the at risk exclusion to real estate, he got rid of the passive losses, h even got rid of the capital gains tax cut. Why because if the government was going to charge 28% they needed to collect it.
In the debate Obama stated Warren Buffet complained its not fair that his Secretary paid a higher percentage in tax that he did so he supported raising the upper marginal rate. HMMM…..
The tax rate for the wealthy under Bush is 36% of all income – the deductions and exemptions taken away.
What does it matter to the top 1% if Obama raises their tax rates if they go offshore to Bahamian Foreign Service corporations or if the rich start investing in losers that make no money.
Trust me on this if you make more than 1,000,000 a year in investment income you do not need to pay taxes to the American government unless you want to. Obama is powerless as long as the money does not hit American Soil.
Given the state of our ecomony with manufacturing leaving our shore this could only get worse. I believe there is a limit to how much you can actually tax the wealthy. The truly wealthy will always have options to opt out, someone somewhere in the world will want their money.
So when the bill for the trillion dollar bailouts come through who do you think is going to pay it. That’s right Joe Six Pack Middle Class only he may no longer have a job.
Keep working ,great job!
